"As an extension of the work on the effect of OH- on various cations in hydrometallurgical systems, the effect of Cl-, Br-, I- and CN- on cations such as Ag+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Cu+, Cu2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Pb2+ and Sn2+ has been examined in detail. The Newton-Raphson technique has been used to determine the amounts of various metal species as a function of the concentration of anions. Some practical implications of various metal complexes in metal separation and removal from solutions have been examined and discussed.IntroductionUnderstanding the role of anions in hydrometallurgical processes often determines the success of an operation. The successful choice of concentration and type of anions not only leads to an effective extraction and removal of metals (Esmaeili et al., 2005; Brbooti et al., 2011; Wei et al., 2005; Jeppesen et al., 2009; Al-Tarazi et al., 2004), but also to assisting effective separation of various metals, whether it is a solvent extraction, ion exchange operation or even a simple precipitation (Farha et al., 2011; Sevenich and Fritz, 1983; Rashid, 1974).This paper continues the discussion of the role of anions in hydrometallurgical systems beyond the role of OH-, which was the topic of a previous paper (Kim et al., 2014). Table 1 lists various anions that are frequently used in conjunction with metal ions to be selectively separated or precipitated. As seen in the table, many anions are used frequently in hydrometallurgical practices. Some of the more frequently used anions include OH-, SO4 2- and CO3 2-. The halogen elements, Cl-, Br- and I- , as well as CN-, are also used in hydrometallurgical applications, especially in relation to noble metal recoveries (Meng and Han, 1994; Zhang et al., 1996; Sun et al., 1996; Starovoytov et al., 2007)."

Unfortunately from 1991 through 1995, 44 miners were fatally injured in the stone industry. Of these 12 occurred at underground mines from a total work force of less than 2,000 miners. Nine of these 12 miners were fatally injured in falls of roof or rib. A safer environment for the miners can be achieved by evaluating the nature of the hazardous ground and by developing more efficient and effective ground control strategies. Roof and rib conditions in the underground stone industry were observed and assessed at 33 mines in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia (Figure 1). Hazard assessment indicated that those ground failures occurring under moderate to substantial overburden ( > 30 m [100 ft]) were caused by stress concentrations and geologic structures. Ground failures near the surface are caused by solution (water) processes. Selection of the mining horizon and mine layout decisions tremendously influence ground stability.

The paper will provide a brief review of the latest alternatives to SAG mills. Included in this review will be a discussion of the comparable benefits of each technology. Commonly accepted disadvantages will also be presented.

Uranium is a very mobile element geochemically and is widely dispersed in the lithosphere and hydrosphere. Under oxidizing conditions, it is particularly widespread and appears in all parts of the surface hydrologic system. As a result, this system is a leading candidate in uranium-resource assessments as a new base from which total resources might be estimated. No other sampling system provides the large volume geochemical capture as the continental hydrosphere and is as pervasive and non-selective regardless of rock type. However, the water system as a uranium metal sampler is not without drawbacks as the development of a National sampling program based on it has shown, In spring 1973, the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) was announced by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). The program was conceived to provide an evaluation of the domestic uranium resources and to identify areas favorable for uranium exploration. The specific NURE objectives are as follows (Bowyer, 1974): 1. To provide a preliminary evaluation of domestic resources and favorable exploration areas by early 1976, based on existing data. 2. To conduct a comprehensive evaluation of domestic resources and favorable areas by 1980, based on advanced state-of-the-art information. 3. To conduct an R&D program into new and improved procedures, equipment, and technology for uranium exploration and assessment. 4. To disseminate information on new exploration concepts and technology.

Passive seismic monitoring is a useful tool for measuring wave propagation in rock mass in deep underground mining. About 20000 mining ? induced seismic events of a hard rock mine, are identified and investigated. The travel times of source-receiver pairs allow us to demonstrate temporal change in velocity. It was found that the average P wave velocity is about 6000 m/s in the mining regions. Velocity investigations on the data during about three months around the main shocks show a significant decrease of the average seismic wave velocity after the main shocks. The sudden drop of average velocity change after the main shocks implies the creation of new fractures in the rock mass due to the main shocks. Afterward, the average velocity increased to a normal level after a time duration of several days. A reasonable explanation for the post seismic velocity increase is that opened cracks begin to close due to crack healing.

For the past several years, inflation has placed increasing pressure on our economic system. The total effect of inflation is complex when combined with other factors which affect the economics of equipment. A mathematical model is described herein which can be programmed on a computer to determine the effect of inflation on economic life and profits after taxes. The computer output results in graphic plots which clearly show the relation of various percentages of inflation to life and profits. Inflation has become a common topic of conversation in the recent past. What is it and how can it be measured? What effect does increased inflation have on equipment policy? Research now in progress at the Construction Institute at Stanford University is beginning to unravel some of the mystery of inflation. As a start, let us answer the first question by defining the word inflation. The dictionary says that inflation is "an increase in the volume of money and credit relative to available goods resulting in a substantial and continuing rise in the general price level. It appears, in fact, that we are in an inflationary spiral which is "a continuous rise in prices that is sustained by the tendency of wage increases and cost increases to act on each other." 3 Inflation behaves just like compound interest. It takes more dollars of future years to buy an equal amount of a given commodity, be it a material or a service. Let us assume an annual inflation rate of 5 percent. As part of a larger study to identify factors influencing the practical operating life of wire rope used on large draglines in surface coal mining, field trips to operating surface coal mines were made during late 1975. Wire rope performance information was obtained from personnel at thirteen mine sites west of the Appalachians. Seventeen pieces of equipment, utilizing buckets ranging from 30-to 220-cubic-yard capacity, were documented. We have judged that U.S. surface coal mining draglines, 30 yards and larger, can be represented as 120 machines having 60-cubic-yard buckets, moving 1.8 x 10 yards of overburden during 6,650 hours of productive availability per year. Based on our limited field study, we have calculated that downtime resulting from rope-related causes averages 105.6 hours per year for each (typical 60-yard) dragline. The total lost production from this source alone is thereby estimated at about 25 x 10 yards annually. Although study findings did not reveal anything about dragline rope life that wasn't known or practiced by one operator or another, most operators could expect improved rope life by periodic review of their practices and by adopting or adapting one or more life-improvement measures employed at other sites. Since rope productivity was found to vary by about five to one, among the sites studied, we believe considerably improved average performance is possible. As little as ten percent overall improvement would mean increased national productivity exceeding two million yards of solid overburden removal, and associated savings in rope costs alone of some two million dollars annually, not to mention any reduction of labor-related expenses. This report outlines preliminary findings which may prove useful to many operators in extending wire rope life, thereby lowering expenses and increasing surface coal mining productivity. Minerals beneficiation commonly requires initial crushing and grinding so that the mineral phase we seek to concentrate is adequately liberated to obtain a product of specified grade at optimum recovery. To some degree this also is true for coal preparation. In the comminution process we liberate not only the product but also the tailings phase. The true objective is, therefor, to eliminate from the comminution circuit whatever particulate matter has reached specified liberation, regardless of whether the particle is product or tailings material. Overgrinding either of the two phases ties up mill capacity and usually also burdens the downstream processing steps by increasing costs or decreasing recovery, or both. In view of this situation, one would expect concentration steps to be commonly incorporated into the cominution circuit. The reasons this is not done may vary, but probably include the desire to utilize large scale unit operations, e.g., large mills, in conjunction with very simple processes. Hydrocyclones have satisfied this desire but may not always be employed for the right reasons. Hydrocyclones are indeed simple. They also are rugged and forgiving. Unfortunately, these virtues are frequently misused. The direct results are inefficient classification and overgrinding. The indirect results are added costs through recovery losses, unnecessary recirculation, and so on,

Money... not many subjects are as personal or as emotional. Hessiod said it well in 700 B.C. "Money is life to us wretched mortals". Are you getting paid enough? Does your company reward its top people? Does coal or copper pay more? Production or engineering? How is the synfuels industry going to influence mining salaries? Do high salaries attract and retain the best people? Do modern compensation systems ensure fairness or destroy entrepreneurial spirit? With our tax system and high standard of living why are we so salary conscious? Salary is not only important for what it can purchase but it is also a yardstick, measuring how well we are doing. We all need money to pay the bills and maintain our standard-of-living, but once we reach a certain point the psychological ramifications become more important than the purely practical side. Even necessary payments like the mortgage and the car are a function of our egos. Are our choices of cars and homes based on simple transportation and shelter?

In situ recovery (ISR) of uranium alters the baseline groundwater geochemistry in order to mobilize and complex uranium to extract and concentrate it. ISR wellfield restoration is often challenging, and primarily relies on groundwater sweep, reinjection of treated permeate, and/or injection of reductants. Greater focus should be placed on injection-based approaches (using existing infrastructure) based on established engineering concepts used for in situ remediation of groundwater plumes. Such injection-based approaches could shorten restoration timeframes consequently reducing long-term operational costs. This paper addresses various types of injection-based approaches to wellfield restoration based on in-situ remediation success with other constituents that require similar treatment. This paper describes necessary design practices for injecting reactive chemicals (e.g., reductants or biostimulants), operations and maintenance (O&M) strategies to prevent fouling of the chemical delivery system and well network, and natural constraints to restoration. Best practices for successful biostimulation strategies that minimize residual uranium, radium, oxoanions, and other trace elements are as described. Advantages of such injection-based approaches could include significant reductions in restoration times, and consequently, lower restoration costs.

The Companhia Vale do Rio Doce in Brazil operates one of the most extensive systems in the world for the mining, transportation, processing, pelletizing and shipping of high grade hematite iron ore and pellets. Current shipping of unbeneficiated, sized, high grade ore from its ports at Tubarão and Vitória is now at the rate of 17,500,000 metric tons annually. An increase in this annual rate is now under study. Using the technology and facilities of Lurgi (1) and Arthur G. McKee company CVRD undertook a program to process and pelletize two types of fines - "Blue Dust" and ?Itabira Fines?. Blue Dust is a high grade fine ore which was bypassed while mining the direct shipping ores and which, also, exists as a very large ore body called the Conceição Mine. Itabira Fines is a lower grade of fine ore which is comprised of in-situ fines and, also fines which are generated in sizing the direct shipping ores for a rigid specification market.

This paper will describe the development, testing, performance evaluation, and in particular, the utilization for a mining application of revolutionary new mini-disc cutters for use in micro-tunneling and small-and medium-diameter tunneling or mining. It will begin by describing the engineering, testing, and development of rock cutting technology in conjunction with the Rock Boring Laboratories of the Colorado School of Mines. During initial tests, the five-inch cutters were able to penetrate limestone and welded tuff with compressive strengths of 9,000 psi to 24,000 psi. High excavation rates at low thrust and power were achieved with considerably less cutter wear than all previously available conventional discs. Eventually, the discs-with their modified carbide-insert cutting rings, high-load capacity bearings and cantilevered mountings-were able to facilitate the rapid and cost-effective installation of micro-and small-diameter pipes and tunnels in large cobbles and even solid rock, with compressive strengths exceeding 30,000 psi. This paper will also discuss the further development of the machine's cutter head and discs to full-scale site use on a range of tunnel machine sizes and soil conditions, including rock, boulders, and soft ground. Potential mining applications include the installation of tunnels to pro-vide ventilation, emergency escape routes, water drainage, compressed air, electricity, and sand-fill.

"1. INTRODUCTIONTunnel face stability is one of the most important consideration in New Austrian Tunneling Method. In general, if all of the material properties of ground can be obtained through the field investigations, the tunnel face behavior can be predicted using numerical simulation prior to tunnel construction. However, estimating the safety of a tunnel face is difficult, especially in cases where the ground is very weak such as in an urban area.In this study, numerical analyses of tunnel excavation in very weak ground conditions, such as a low cohesion and low internal friction angle, were carried out. The relationship between the average shear strain distribution on the tunnel face and the overburden was analyzed. This relationship estimates the shear strain of the tunnel face relative to the critical shear strain obtained by the ground properties. The critical shear strain was defined as an allowable value for the maximum shear strain. We proposed the allowable overburden as tunnel face stability index (TFI) that satisfies the critical shear strain criterion of ground. Finally, a design chart of the allowable overburden for various cohesion values and friction angles of ground was created. This chart is useful in the preliminary tunnel design stage to judge the necessity of additional counter measures against normal tunnel support design.2. WEAK GROUND MODELING AND ANALYSIS PROCEDURE2.1 Setting material propertiesWith reference to a past study1), the material properties were adopted on the basis of material properties in the standard worst rock classification case called “DII”2) for standard support pattern of weak ground in Japan. The typical material properties for “DII” are listed in Table 1. In addition, Fig.1 shows the distribution of the representative weak ground according to cohesion and internal friction angle. When the internal friction angle is relatively high and the cohesion is weak, the ground is categorized as sandy ground. Furthermore, when the internal friction angle is low and the cohesion is strong, the ground is categorized as clayey ground."

The La Perla Mine, owned by Altos Hornos de Mexico, S.A., is located approximately 100 miles east of the City of Chihuahua in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico. The mine began operations in 1958. Existing ore beneficiating facilities, consisting of heavy media and jig plants, upgrade the ore prior to shipment by rail to the Altos Hornos steelmaking complex in Monclova. Sizable reserves of two distinct ore types, which were not amenable to treatment in the existing beneficiating plant, or usable in the blast furnaces, have been mined and stockpiled in order to uncover the treatable ores. One of these ore types has been labeled "Diseminado" ore, and is low grade containing approximately 42% Fe with sulphurs ranging from 1 to 2%. The other ore type has been labeled "Pulverulento" ore, and is high grade containing approximately 65% Fe and 0.1% S, but at 80% minus 325 mesh, is too fine grained for efficient sintering. Late in 1968, Arthur G. McKee & Company became involved with the problem of improving the above ores for their efficient and economical use in Altos Hornos' blast furnaces. Early in 1969 representative samples of Diseminado ore were obtained for laboratory bench-scale testing at the University of Minnesota, Mineral Resources Research Center. Concentration tests incorporating magnetic roasting, wet magnetic separation, high intensity separation, high tension magnetic separation, anionic flotation of apatite, cationic flotation of silica and oleic acid flotation of iron were performed. Laboratory testing was concurrently carried on at La Perla Laboratory, which resulted in plans to construct a 10 TPD pilot plant. The pilot plant was operational in September, 1969. Analyzing laboratory results as well as pilot plant results, Altos Hornos and Arthur G. McKee & Company metallurgists agreed that the most promising flowsheet for the low grade Diseminado ores entailed wet magnetic cobbing, desliming, and oleic acid flotation of the non-magnetic fraction. The authors investigate the influence of the basicity index CaO / Si02 on the sintering properties of hematite ore mixtures. The experimentation was performed with three different mixtures of ores from Tazadit, Nimba, Mano-River, Itabira, Marcona, Goa, Mapawa and Cassinga. Increasing the basicity index CaO / Si02 between 0.1 and 3, chiefly through limestone admixture makes possible to reduce the thermal consumption of sintering and to improve the physical and chemical properties of the sinter. In the case of a plant using hematite ores, it seems interesting to produce an hyperbasic sinter and to complete the blast furnace burden with calibrated ore or acid pellets.

To address the U.S. Department of Energy’s critical minerals strategies regarding rare earth elements (REE) in the U.S.A. This study evaluated apatite-rich mine tailing from the historic Pea Ridge Iron Mine (PR) for possible enrichment of REE by the froth flotation process. Comprehensive characterization studies were performed on the tailing samples to quantify the REE content, identify the REEbearing minerals and their liberation behavior. The aforementioned characterization studies were: x-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and TESCAN’s Integrated Mineral Analysis (TIMA). The ICP-MS analysis showed that the concentrations of heavy-REE and light-REE were 8000 ppm and 3000 ppm, respectively. TIMA showed that monazite was the major REE-bearing mineral. Additionally, it was shown that monazite and other REE-bearing minerals were strongly locked within larger apatite grains. Findings from the characterization studies suggested that REE could be enriched using phosphate minerals’ direct froth flotation process. Flotation feasibility tests were performed using selected organic and inorganic iron oxides’ depressants, including polyacrylamide (PAM), in-house synthesized hybrid polyacrylamide (HyPAM), chitosan, sodium silicates, and corn starch. Results showed that the depressant’s efficiency at pH 9 was in the following order: HyPAM > chitosan > PAM > sodium metasilicate > corn starch. Zeta potential studies on the selected depressants indicated that chitosan had the highest adsorption on magnetite’s surface at pH 7. Therefore, additional batch flotation experiments using chitosan as an iron oxides depressant were conducted as a function of chitosan dosage. Results indicated that the highest P2O5 recovery of 55% and grade of 28 wt.% were obtained at 150g/t of chitosan. However, the concentrate’s highest total REE enrichment of 1.07% was achieved at a 200 g/t dosage of chitosan. The low enrichment of REE highlighted the complex mineralogy of the PR tailings and the need to implement additional beneficiation strategies before and after the froth flotation process.

In this study, recovery of copper from solid material (obtained by leaching of chalcopyrite with oxalic acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide) with a copper oxalate structure was carried out selectively using HCl. The chemical composition of the solid was as 29.3%, 9.7%, and 13.3% for Cu, Fe, and S, respectively. Selective recovery of copper by degrading the copper oxalate structure with a low-solubility product (Ksp = 4.43 × 10−10) was performed by conventional leaching in the presence of HCl. The optimum leaching conditions were determined as 5 M of HCl concentration, 318 K of leaching temperature, 120 min of leaching time, 25 ml/g of liquid–solid ratio and 400 rpm of stirring speed. Under these conditions, approximately 77% of copper and 3% of iron were taken into the solution. According to the characterization of the leach residue that was obtained, the oxalate structure was degraded. Moreover, the results of XRD analysis showed that the sulfur (S) and cubanite (CuFe2S3) phases were mostly observed in leaching residues, and this was supported by the SEM-EDX data. Based on the results, it may be stated that selective copper extraction can be obtained from a chalcopyrite concentrate by a two-step leaching method using a conventional hydrometallurgical technique.

This paper does not deal with the typical start-up issues of equipment, production capacity or work force. This is a description of the challenges faced and the changes made by the project team to bring to fruition the reconstruction of Port Inland. Many honored traditions and norms had to be overturned to find the winning combination that provided the productivity, flexibility and cost necessary to survive in today's competitive minerals environment. This paper covers the innovation in terms of machinery, operations, and management philosophy that permitted the renovation and reopening of Port Inland as a commercial limestone producer in the spring of 1992. Port Inland, constructed by Inland Steel in 1930, operated as a captive source of metallurgical grade limestone for the steel industry until its closure in 1989. Located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the north edge of Lake Michigan, the operations consist of a deep water port facility with crushing, screening and stockpile storage for 500,000 tons of finished product at the port. Ninety-nine percent of the stone is shipped via lake boat to ports within the Great Lakes. The operation is unique in that both metallurgical Dolomite and Limestone are produced on site. In 1930, Port Inland was at the fore front of technological advancement. It was the first major mining operation to use roller bearings and other equipment innovations. Over the 60 years of operation, Inland Steel placed emphasis on steel making technology and iron ore mining at the detriment of the limestone operation. By the early 80's, Port Inland was no longer a leading competitor. Inland Steel, unable or unwilling to spend the capital to modernize, closed the facility in the fall of 1989.
