"It is now possible to use 3D X-ray tomography analysis for plant-site characterization of coarse particles at a sampling rate of about 3 kg/min for particles which range in size from 150 mm to 1 mm at a voxel resolution of about 150 microns. This is quite a significant advance in X-ray tomography technology and should be useful for plant-site coarse particle characterization (size, shape, composition, density, texture, grain exposure, mineral liberation) with a response time of minutes after receiving the sample. Applications in the mineral industries are discussed including the coal industry, aggregate industry, metal mining and the processing of industrial minerals. INTRODUCTION Plant-site characterization of coarse particles at coal preparation plants, crushed stone/aggregate plants, and mineral processing plants is needed to improve plant capacity, product quality, and/or process efficiency. Not much on-line coarse particle characterization is done at these plants. Some limited information regarding particle size is obtained on-line from reflected light images using systems such as the OPSA, Split, and WipFrag analyzers. Even laboratory analysis of coarse particles has been difficult because of the large amount of sample required to insure statistical significance of the results. During the past decades laboratory 3D characterization of particles from energy and mineral resources by X-ray tomography has been demonstrated and used to good advantage [1, 2]. 3D X-ray tomographic analysis had its origin in the medical services industry; it is used to provide internal images of the human body and now has also been developed for non-medical applications [3]. Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram for the cone-beam geometry micro-CT system. In our case X-rays from a microfocus X-ray generator are partially attenuated by the sample (a packed bed of particles) that is made to rotate in equal steps in a full circle about a single axis of the particle sample. At each rotational position, the surviving X-ray photons are detected by a planar two-dimensional array (image intensifier) large enough to contain the shadow of the specimen. These two dimensional projection images are collected using conventional video technology. The video signal for each projection is then converted to a two-dimensional digital array by an image processing system. Finally, a three-dimensional image is reconstructed from the collected set of projection images. With the availability of automated high speed X-ray tomography [4] it now seems possible to do plant-site particle characterization at a sampling rate of about 3 kg/min for particles which range in size from 150 mm to 1 mm at a voxel resolution of about 150 microns. National income originating compared to physical production for an enterprise or an industry reflects its ability to strengthen the national economy. For a single industrial sector or for an industry this comparison can be useful to reflect changes that may occur in this ability to contribute because of changing supply-demand-income-investment equilibria. A favorable relationship can be postulated by specified economic incentive, and the accompanying technologic input required can be shown. The new index proposes the use of the Federal Reserve Board indexes of production divided by the constant dollar income originating in the petroleum industry which reflects increases or decreases in performance. When compared with other mineral industries and with, total industry, an approximation of relative strength is evident. By constructing three different hypothetical conditions for future petroleum imports, assuming a constant excess capacity requirement for domestic production, and providing an estimate for future domestic demand for petroleum, the impact on the performance index can be shown. Thus, a strong position for the petroleum and natural gas industry can be stated. If this is done, it becomes evident that because of restrictions on cost-price relationships, a drilling program that would provide enough domestic oil to meet demand may not be practicable. By difference, the amount of improvement in methods of production and processing through technologic advancements can be stated explicitly.

We are in the midst of a transportation revolution. From the Wright Brothers to the SST. From the Toonerville Trolly to the 120-mile-an-hour Northeast Corridor train. From Christopher Columbus to Neil Armstrong. There is another side to this revolution and it is going on every day at our mines and factories. We call it bulk distribution. Perhaps ordinary sounding, but every bit as exciting as those other transportation innovations. Basically, we have gone from bag to bulk, and in the process reached that Last Frontier in manufacturing cost savings. By revitalization of our distribution system, we have made it possible for our mines and factories to realize fully the vast economies of spage-age manufacturing techniques and accomplishments. The pacesetters in this distribution revolution have been you gentlemen, the producers and shippers of dry mineral products. In this area bulk distribution grew up. And here most of the current innovations are being introduced. Management of your industry was early to realize the economic advantages of bulk distribution. Distribution costs of your products comprises a sizeable, portion of the selling price and management is sensitive of any developments which may even slightly reduce the cost of transportation, marketing or the exploration of new frontiers.

It is widely recognized that Semiautogenous Grinding (SAG) circuits require the use of effective process control techniques to achieve their full processing potential and to protect them from the harmful effects of overloads and grind-outs. This requirement is even more essential as the variability of the ore being processed increases. The new Chino Mines Company concentrator located near Santa Rita, New Mexico started operation in June of 1982. At least eight major rock types are mined and milled. Ore hardness, feed size, and specific gravity are quite variable. Typical feed rates per grinding line are 850-900 tph but extremes of 260-1200 tph have been encountered. Normal feed rate variations of between 400 and 1100 tph are encountered on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. Feed size varies with rock type from a maximum of eight inches for the harder ores to two inches for the softer ores. One somewhat unique characteristic of the Santa Rita ore body among major copper mines is the wide variation in ore specific gravity. Specific gravities of the major rock types range between 2.7 and 3.6. The specific gravity variations are due to large changes in magnetite concentration throughout the pit. The result of this is large variations in SAG mill throughput which can have a harmful effect on downstream ball milling and flotation performance. Due to these wide fluctuations in ore characteristics, it was recognized soon after startup that successful operation of the grinding circuit and the plant at large was dependent upon the development of an effective automatic grinding control strategy. Research at the University of Utah has suggested that control based upon critical but difficult or costly to measure variables would improve automatic control performance. A project team made up of the Chino process control staff, Kennecott's Process Control department and the University of Utah Metallurgy Department was established to assess these concepts at Chino. This paper describes the development and on-line plant implementation of an Extended Kalman Filter that uses simple models of the SAG milling process, to predict the volumetric loading, the rock mass, the water mass, and the ball mass within the SAG mills at Chino. The on-line estimation of these parameters is the first step in the development of an integrated SAG mill/ball mill control strategy which is hoped to L eventually maintain the grinding circuit at its maximum capacity, while balancing the grinding load between the SAG and ball mills. Examples of long term estimation with the models and filter are shown for typical operating conditions as well as a SAG mill overload and grind-out.

Geostatistical literature has been dealing with recoverable reserve estimation techniques for the last 30 years. There have been well established support correction techniques (Le. affine correction, indirect log-normal correction, etc.) to deal with volume -variance relationship globally in determining what will be the reserves above a cutoff grade during mining. Kriging has become the accepted technique in the mining industry for ore reserve estimation. Many large companies are using this method for gold and copper deposit modeling. In general, the estimates coming from kriging are smooth. The variances of the block grades estimated by kriging are often lower than the material that will be mined selectively. As a result, kriging tends to under estimate reserves at high cutoff grades and overestimates them in low cutoff grades. It is necessary to perform additional steps after kriging if the goal is to determine recoverable reserves at some cutoff and not the in situ resources. In the mining industry, it is becoming more and more common for the low grade heap leach projects to consider whether the higher grade portion of a deposit may be processed by a mill at higher profits. Similarly, a concentrator -refinery operations are implementing heap leach -SX-EW option for the lower grade portion of their deposit. These options are making it very critical to estimate the low and high end of the grade distributions more accurately. Ore reserve estimation is normally done by using widely spaced exploration data which has very small size support (Le. core samples). Selective mining is carried out on ore control that is based on closely spaced blasthole data normally averaged into larger polygons based on some cutoff grade. Estimated grades from exploration data need to reflect the variability of the grades of the selectively mined units if they are used without further adjustments to predict recoverable reserves.

Repairing and replacing equipment damaged by corrosion and abrasion is a major cost throughout industry, especially in the coal mining industry. Careful study of corrosion and abrasion, and their causes and effects, often leads to the selection of alternative materials which can provide economies. What, actually, are corrosion and abrasion and how do they contribute to the cost of operating a coal-preparation plant? Furthermore, what can be done to alleviate corrosion and abrasion problems and thereby reduce operating costs? These questions will be answered in the following discussion, which will describe the destructive action of corrosion and abrasion and give several methods for controlling corrosion and abrasion losses, These methods include the substitution of stainless steel for carbon steel, the use of corrosion inhibitors, and the use of design to eliminate corrosion and abrasion. Examples will be given illustrating the benefits that have resulted in plant tests when these methods of controlling corrosion and abrasion were used.

To better understand the load shedding and the stress transfer on coal pillars due to room-and- pillar retreat mining in deep cover panels, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a monitoring field study. Two sites, at overburden depths of 1,000 ft (304.8 m) and 1,500 ft (457.3 m), were selected in a room-and-pillar mine operating in Southern West Virginia. The deformation and stress changes in the roof and two adjacent pillars at each site were monitored during the retreat mining process. The monitoring results and field observations were used to calibrate large-scale FLAC3D models for each site. The calibrated models were used to assess different sizes of roof bolts installed in deep cover areas. INTRODUCTION Deep cover room-and-pillar retreat mining is an important emerging issue that will intensify in the future as shallower reserves are depleted (Mark, 2009; Chase et al., 2002). During pillar retreat mining, the likelihood of local and/or global instabilities increases due to elevated stress levels near the pillar line because of the abutment loading. In the last decade, approximately 31% of the room-and-pillar mining groundfall fatalities in the United States occurred during pillar retreat mining. Between 2013 and 2017, this proportion increased to 55%, of which 50% of these fatalities were due to falls of roof and rib that occurred during pillar recovery (MSHA, 2018). One interesting piece of information about pillar recovery fatalities was that the victim was nearly always under bolted roof. Sheared and broken #5 (5/8-in), fully grouted rebar bolt failure contributed to three of four fatal roof fall incidents that have occurred in deep cover retreat mines (NIOSH, 2010). This claim raised the following question at the study mine: Is it safe to use a 4-ft long #5 (5/8-in) rebar bolt grade 60 at a depth of cover more than 1,000 ft (304.8 m)? There was some concern about shear failure of the #5 (5/8-in) rebar bolt at a depth of cover over 1,000 ft (304.8 m). To answer the question and to reduce accidents and fatalities caused by ground falls due to room-and-pillar retreat mining in deep cover panels, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) monitored the roof and rib deformation and the change in vertical pressure within two adjacent pillars during pillar recovery. The study was conducted at two deep cover sites in a room-and-pillar mine located in Southern West Virginia that operates in the Lower War Eagle (LWE) seam. The monitored sites were selected at 1,000 ft (304.8 m) and 1,500 ft (457.3 m) depths of cover. In this paper, site-1 represents the monitored site at 1,000 ft (304.8 m) of cover, while site-2 represents the monitored site at 1,500 ft (457.3 m) of cover. For this study, large-scale FLAC3D numerical models were calibrated based on both field observations and instrumentation results. The calibrated models were then used to compare the ground response and the induced stresses of two pillars at instrumented sites 1 and 2. The maximum lateral displacement (roof shift) obtained from the calibrated large-scale FLAC3D models was applied to a small-scale FLAC3D bolted models, the safety factor for axial stresses of the simulated roof bolts was calculated at the deep cover sites.

Recent investigations by Mannesmann Research have shown that disintegration of sinter with widely varying quality levels is subject to a much more complex set of influences than was previously assumed. It was confirmed that disintegration at temperatures between 300° and 600°C (570° and 1,110°F) is triggered by the degradation of hematite. The specific tendency of hematite to disintegrate is, however, not constant: sinters containing the same amount of hematite can show widely differing disintegration tendencies, depending on structural homogeneity, porosity, and gangue quantity. Sinters with heterogeneous structures transmit stress to the hematite phase and this favors disintegration. Another factor is the brittleness of the glassy silicate phase, which can be influenced even by small modifications of minor gangue constituents.

Asbestos is a broad term embracing a number of fibrous silicate minerals. These minerals look extremely fragile, yet their fibers have a tensile strength equal to that of piano wire. Chrysotile asbestos is the only mineral that can be woven into cloth, and its fibrous structure is, if anything, even more amazing than its remarkable ability to withstand heat. Because of its unique physical properties asbestos has achieved great industrial importance, and more than 3,000 current uses are known, ranging from use in the kitchen to use in space missiles. Because their minuscule fibers are eminently respirable, asbestos minerals have also found their way into the lungs of humans, where they apparently produce serious biological effects such as asbestosis and lung cancers. 1, 2,3 Because of both their usefulness and their hazardous properties, these minerals have attracted a good deal of attention from research workers during recent years. For example, the surface properties of asbestos minerals have been studied by many investigators. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 However, even for the important mineral chrysotile, the literature data are more or less conflicting. Pundsack4 measured a PZC (point of zero charge) of 10.1; Martinez and Zucker5 measured 11.8; Chwastiak reports 10.8-11.0; and Raddick measured three sepa-rate apparent PZCls at about pH 8.3, 10.0 and 10.9. More recently Trivedi8 reports 10.11. Naumann and Dresher9 have studied surface charge enhancement of chrysotile by metal ions, and describe how the mineral reacts with contaminantions. In the present paper, the mode of dissolution of magnesium and hydroxyl ion from asbestos minerals placed in water was studied by kinetic experiments involving rate at which these items leave the minerals. Also, some study was made of interaction between dissolved species.

The unique application of a large walking dragline in the mountains of southern West Virginia was developed and implemented by Hobet Mining, Inc. Hobet is an independent operating subsidiary of Ashland Coal and is headquartered at the No. 21 Mine in Boone County, West Virginia, near Danville. Hobet also operates the 07 Mine located in Logan County, West Virginia, near Holden. Both mines are similar in equipment and manpower used; both produce over 2,000,000 tons of clean coal annually. Each site encompasses large, contiguous properties with access to rail service. The larger of the two is the Boone County property; it totals nearly 40,000 acres and has ample reserves. In 1977, Hobet was in the process of constructing a preparation plant (Beth Station) at its 21 Mine site with a capacity for two million tons. One of the first orders of business was to design a mine plan that would provide production for the capacity of the plant. Coal production would come from a more than adequate reserve base using the most economical mining methods available. Hobet looked at different deep and surface mining methods to use in order to develop the property; ultimately, it was determined that the mountaintop removal method with the use of a large dragline was the most economical way to develop reserve. Prior to this time surface mining in mountainous Southern West Virginia was generally done by contour mining and/or augering techniques.

"Carbon dioxide (CO2) injection in deep unmineable coal seams can enhance coalbed methane (CBM) recovery as well as effectively and permanently store the CO2. Enhanced coalbed methane (ECBM) recovery and CO2 storage capacity can be improved by altering injection parameters including the injection well locations, number of injection wells, and the time and rate of the injection. A sensitivity study was performed with sixteen different injection scenarios on a coalbed methane field in Buchanan County, Virginia to understand the influence of the injection parameters on methane production, CO2 storage and the extent of the CO2 plume. History matching was done for the gas and water production period prior to injection based on field data from an active US Department of Energy funded pilot project. INTRODUCTION The coal structure is a combination of the coal matrix and cleats. In a CBM reservoir, the methane (CH4) is stored in the matrix under adsorption properties, not as a free gas. During CH4 production, the reservoir pressure is reduced and gas is released from the surface of the coal, diffuses through the matrix and transmits to fractures (man-made or natural) via the cleat network. Fractures and cleats are the major parameters that influence gas flow capacity because deliverability of the CH4 to the production well is controlled by the cleat permeability. As gas production continues over time, CH4 desorbs from coal, and coal matrix volume starts to decrease. This volume decrease in the matrix opens up the cleats, matrix shrinkage, which leads to a permeability increase. Several emprical (Harpalani and Schraufnagel 1990a, 1990b; Harpalani and Chen 1995, 1997; Harpalani and Mitra 2010; Pan et al. 2010; Liu et al. 2012; Mitra et al. 2012) and analytical (Palmer 2009; Liu and Harpalani 2013) studies have reported this relationship between pressure and permeability. Those studies showed that permeability is an important parameter in CH4 production performance. Furthermore, during gas production, water is produced through the cleat system as well, therefore gas-water relative permeability must be also considered in evaluating production performance (Gash et al., 1991). In the CO2 injection scenario the opposite occurs because CO2 has a higher adsorption affinity than CH4. CO2 replaces CH4 in the matrix of the coal and increases the volume of the coal matrix, matrix swelling, and results in a permeability decrease. Harpalani and Mitra (2010) concluded in their experimental study that swelling of the coal matrix due to the CO2 injection is two to three times more than the sorption of CH4, resulting in large permeability changes during CO2 injection."

Scope of the Courier 300 System The fact that reliable on-stream analysis is a prerequisite for effective flotation control is hardly disputed today. Nevertheless, up to now no system has been available that includes all the equipment necessary for successful analysis. However essential an on-stream analyser is in itself, reliable and accurate assaying can only be assured after techniques for sampling, handling the slurries and computing the X-ray data have been developed for the purpose. The Outokumpu Company's Courier 300 System is a complete package that can be installed and handed over with the key. It includes the equipment needed for sampling and handling the slurries. It has been developed from the start to meet industrial demands. Obviously an on-line system must comply with far stricter standards than one designed for a laboratory. Assays are computed by an Outokumpu 316 digital data processor, which is an integral part of the system and controls its entire performance. The computer software is programmed as a standard package, including a highly advanced new model for assay computation. Analysis output is available for a process computer, report typewriter:, and recorders. The package also includes calibration for slurry assays at our pilot installation before delivery. A complete Courier System can analyse up to 4Z slurries and six elements in each slurry. Thanks to its modular design, it can be dimensioned initially to the customer's requirements and is easy to expand later at low cost. Being a mining company itself, Outokumpu has been able to utilize its own long experience in non-ferrous metallurgy - an important factor contributing to the success of the Courier system. INTRODUCTION In 2010, Montana Tech was gifted 65 acres of land immediately west of the campus. The parcel of land included an old silver mine called the Orphan Boy Mine. The Orphan Boy and its sister, Orphan Girl, were developed about1895 and operated until 1956. In addition to the gift of land, a significant industry gift was obtained to develop a first class training facility, which we call the Underground Mine Education Center (UMEC). The UMEC has been funded primarily by industry through donations of dollars, equipment, and supplies. The UMEC is a unique hands-on, educational environment for today’s students who are being trained to find, develop and process the worlds' natural resources. The center complements courses in mining engineering, geological engineering, environmental engineering, metallurgical engineering and occupational safety and health. It also serves as a as research facility utilized by students and faculty, and other organizations interested in doing research a hard rock underground mine. LOCATION The Orphan Boy and Orphan Girl Mine are located approximately 700 feet (ft.) apart and the Orphan Girl Mine is part of the World Museum of Mining. Underground they are connected on various levels and all levels below the 100 ft. level are currently flooded. The Orphan Boy mine was 804 ft. deep and Orphan Girl was 3200 ft. deep. The surface locations of the two mines and some of the underground workings on the 100 ft. level are shown on Figure 1 (2015). CONSTRUCTION Land ownership was gifted from BP/ARCO in 2010 and planning started immediately. In June of 2011, site development for the decline to the 100 ft. Level of the Orphan Boy began with a satisfactory portal site developed (Figure 2). We hoped to be able to start driving the decline in July. However, the portal was sited approximately 125 ft. away from a natural gas line that bisected the Montana Tech campus. While outside the right of way for the line, Northwestern Energy requested that no blasting be performed near the gas line until such time as the gas line was abandoned in the fall so decline development was put on hold. The gas line was officially abandoned in January of 2012.

Willowstick has successfully employed a new Seismic Acoustic Resonance (SAR) method to improve seepage characterization through, beneath, and around dams. SAR is a passive seismic method that detects zones of higher permeability in the foundation and fill materials of a dam. Just as the ocean has tides, the earth’s crust experiences daily “Earth Tides” and is constantly in motion. Continual motion produces resonance signals that can be measured, interpreted, and modeled to identify zones of higher permeability within a dam and its foundation. The SAR results are analyzed in conjunction with the traditional Willowstick Method to better characterize seepage flow paths and patterns trough, beneath, or around a dam in three dimensions. When both methodologies, which use entirely different scientific principles, identify the same anomalous feature, a higher degree of confidence is gained in the results of the investigation. Willowstick has effectively utilized the SAR method on many successful dam seepage investigations. The two geophysical techniques when used in parallel have yielded complimentary results, with both methods providing beneficial information about seepage locations. This paper will detail seepage flow paths identified using both Willowstick and SAR methods for two case study tailings dams in Canada and the United States.

An AFM has been applied to study in situ the adsorption of oleic acid on fluorite in aqueous solutions. The AFM images show that fluorite surface becomes smoother with the adsorption of 7 × 10-5 M oleic acid solution at pH 9. Force measurement shows that fluorite is strongly positively charged in water at pH 6, suggesting a neglectable surface carbonation of fluorite. The adsorption of oleic acid at pH 9 renders fluorite more and more negatively charged. The surface morphology change of fluorite as shown by the AFM images suggests that oleic acid chemisorbs on fluorite at pH 9. Increasing temperature can help increase the adsorption of oleic acid on fluorite. It may also improve the lateral polymerization of unsaturated oleic acid on fluorite as suggested by the smoother mineral surface in oleic acid solutions at an elevated temperature.

The lacustrine Green River Formation of Eocene age in the Green River Basin, southwest Wyoming, contains the world's large resource of natural sodium carbonate in bedded trona (Na2CO3? NaHCO3? 2H2O). In this study, 126 billion tons are estimated to be present in 22 beds, ranging from 4 to 36 feet in thickness. These 22 beds underlie areas of about 50 to more than 775 square miles at depths ranging from about 650 to more than 3,000 feet below the surface. The total resource of trona ore in the basin for which drilling information is available is estimated to be about 149 billion short tons. The undeveloped deeper trona beds in the southern part of the basin may be exploitable by solution mining. Additional unevaluated sodium carbonate resources are present in disseminated shortite in strata interbedded with the trona and in shallow sodium carbonate brines in the northeast part of the basin.

The research presented here was initiated to investigate the role of atmospheric oxygen in the leaching of copper waste dumps. The problem of increasing the recovery rate of copper from these dumps is or great importance considering there are by conservative estimate in excess of fifteen billion pounds of copper located in dumps in the western United States. At this time, there is an increased interest in recovering copper from these dumps on a large scale. Large tonnages of low-grade material are being placed on the waste dumps of most copper mining operations in the western United States each day. The size of these dumps ranges from 5.5 million tons at Mineral Park, Arizona, to 4 billion tons at Kennecott's Utah operation (1). Leach solutions are recycled and contain ferrous and ferric sulfates. Large quantities of dissolved aluminum, magnesium and calcium salts may also be present. To this solution make up water is added to maintain the solution inventory and sulfuric acid is added for pH adjustment. Iron is introduced into the leach solution by the dissolution of the iron-containing sulfide and oxidized minerals present in the ore deposit. In addition to the iron from dump leaching, iron is also introduced during the precipitation process when the pregnant solution is passed over metallic scrap iron if cementation is used to reduce the copper in solution.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the use of geophysical methods to determine rock mass characteristics, particularly rock quality, lithology, and fracture parameters that are important for determining the feasibility of in situ leaching operations. As part of this research, two Bureau-developed crosshole geophysical systems are described that can be used for site investigation and rock mass characterization. Results are given for performance tests at field sites in Arizona and Texas and for correlations between the crosshole seismic data with fracture frequency, rock quality, and lithologic variation. Recommendations are made for using elastic waveform propagation characteristics and dynamic elastic properties for improving rock mass characterization in the geomechanical assessment of in situ leaching deposits.

Ilmenite concentrates prepared from beach and dune sands of Florida, India, Australia, and other localities deviate to varying degrees from the theoretical composition of pure ilmenite, and generally contain more Ti02 than the formula FeTiO3 would indicate, and some Fe203. This variation in composition is due to different amounts of altered ilmenite in the concentrates.(l) The alteration has been shown to take place by oxidation and leaching of the iron in ilmenite, to yield residual products consisting of amorphous or very finely crystalline titanium dioxide and ferric oxide, Other studies (2) have stressed that ilmenite may alter first to an amorphous titanium-iron oxide, or to an amorphous mixture of titanium and iron oxides, with later alteration to crystalline titanium dioxide. There has been some speculation as to whether alteration of ilmenite is usually caused by weathering or by hydrothermal processes,(3, 4, 5) Three main methods of approach were used to study the mechanism and rate of ilmenite weathering, (1) Etch tests were used to learn the relationship between crystallographic orientation and the rate of chemical attack on ilmenite. (2) Altered ilmenites in New Jersey sands were compared with ilmenite in rocks of the area from which the sands were probably derived, (3) Experiments were carried out to determine at what rate, and by what agents, originally fresh ilmenite could be altered in the laboratory under simulated weathering conditions.
