A thermistor probe has been developed to measure in situ temperature profiles underground. A full description of the probe is given. Data collected from the probe has been used to compare the actual profiles with those predicted from a finite element analysis using laboratory measured thermal properties of the different rock types. This comparison indicates the applicability of laboratory measured parameters in modeling the real conditions. Factors such as applied pressure, moisture content and anisotropy on laboratory measurements is discussed.

Mill drums are essential equipment in various industries for the comminution of materials. To optimize their design and operation for efficient and cost-effective processing, it is necessary to understand the behavior of the mill drum under various operating conditions. This study investigates the behavior of a mill drum using a combination of experimental and numerical methods. The factors that can influence the behavior of the mill drum, such as the size and shape of the mill, grinding media, rotational speed, filling level, and material properties, are discussed. Experimental methods can be limited in obtaining measurements of internal processes, so numerical methods such as the Discrete Element Method (DEM) are also used to simulate the behavior of the mill drum. In this study, the experimental measurements of the motion of the grinding media are obtained using computer vision methods, and the numerical simulations are calibrated using the experimental results. A designed experiment approach is used to evaluate the performance of the mill drum under various operating conditions. The results of this study can be useful for the design and optimization of mill drums to achieve better performance and energy efficiency.

Refractory copper ores (CROs) in central Africa contain copper minerals that are locked up in a micacious solid matrix or associated with carbonate, sulfide and phosphate minerals. Several researchers have reported that the recovery of copper from CRO material by an acid-leaching process is not economically feasible, due to the presence of excess gangue-acid-consuming minerals such as calcites, dolomite, asbolane and iron oxides. Since the proportion of acid-insoluble copper (CuS) is about 28% of total copper and total free sulfur is extremely small, sulfide flotation was considered unfavorable. Consequently, hundreds of millions of tons of CRO material have been stockpiled specifically at the Nchanga Mine of Zambia. In terms of copper distribution in CRO material, a significant portion of total copper exists as carbonates (39%) and oxides (17%), while 28% of the copper is acidinsoluble (CuS). The rest of the copper is in the form of carbonates (16%) and (hydr) oxides (17%). This means that only about 72% of total copper is recoverable through the non-oxidative acid-leaching process. In this study, batch leach tests were performed on CRO solids (d95 = 95%) to establish the gangue acid consumption values at different feed pH values and to evaluate the leaching characteristics of copper, manganese and iron within the CRO material. Subsequently, continuous leach tests were performed on CRO solids (106 um, 80% passing) using optimum leach conditions derived from batch tests. This paper aims to show that sustainable copper recovery can be achieved by selecting leaching conditions whereby gangue acid consumption (GAC) values become significantly small and the final concentration of manganese and iron in the leach solution are appreciably low.

El Abra has the world's largest leach, solvent extraction and electrowinning facility, The crushing plant capacity is 120,000 metric tonnes per day and the cathode production capacity is 225,000 metric tonnes per year. The El Abra mine and plant are located in the Province of El Loa, in Region I1 of Chile, 55 km. north of the city of Calama. The ore deposit outcrops on the southern slope of Cerro Pajonal at an altitude of 3,900 to 4,100 meters above sea level. The processing plant and camp facilities are located at a lower 3,300 meter elevation on an alluvial slope, 15 km southeast of the deposit. The operating company, Sociedad Contractual Minera El Abra, is 51% owned by Cyprus Arnax Minerals Company through the Cyprus Climax Metals Company subsidiary and 49% owned by Corporaci6n Nacional del Cobre de Chile (Codelco). The present paper describes the ore reserves, mine operations, crushing, leaching, solvent extraction, electrowinning and infrastructure facilities.

The separation of minerals such as apatite and scheelite by flotation from other salt-type minerals such as calcite is extremely complex owing to the close similarity between their physicochemical properties. In this paper, properties relevant to flotation such as crystal structure, solubility, surface charge and adsorption behavior of important salt-type minerals are examined along with the role of inorganic modifying agents such as silicates and polyphosphates and organic modifying agents such as starch and tannin. Flotation characteristics of these minerals are then reviewed and selected separation problems involving salt-type minerals are discussed.

The mushroom-shaped Minghu power cavern located in central Taiwan is 21.2 m (W) by 40.5 m (H) by 127.2 m (L) and is designed to house 4 units of power generating-pumping equipment with a total capacity of 1,000 MW. This paper presents an introduction to the geological conditions at the cavern site; the rock mechanical tests undertaken; the design approach adopted; the construction method and sequence followed; and the instrumentation provided in the roof arch to monitor the behavior of the surrounding rocks. The measured data collected from the embedded instruments will be compared with those obtained from theoretical analyses and presented in this paper. Several technical problems encountered during the construction stage are covered and the solutions of these problems are also described therein.

Most lead and zinc secondaries are recycled pyrometallurgically. However, many problems encountered in secondary smelters have been solved by addition of physical concentration and/or hydrometallurgical processing steps, with resulting important environmental benefits. U.S. secondary lead and zinc operations are described, covering conventional smelters, EAF-dust treaters, and zinc sulfate/fertilizer producers, including plant capacities, technologies, and outputs. During the past two decades, remarkable advances have been achieved by recycling spent lead-acid battery components. Interaction between primary and secondary zinc producers, the fertilizer industry, and the zinc chemical industry has substantially decreased waste generation.

Introduction Evidence from blast furnace operations has indicated that using pellets with a higher ISO low temperature reducibility, a lower SiO2 content, and better resistance to low temperature degradation results in considerable coke savings and improved furnace operation. Although these benefits could not be directly related to reducibility differences alone, we believed there was sufficient evidence of the advantages in improved pellet reducibility to warrant laboratory investigation of ways and means to effect such improvements. It is well known that pellet reducibility can be significantly altered by changes in the basicity and the amount of non-iron oxide constituents. Past work (Friel and Erickson, 1980, 1982; Saeki et al., 1977; Thanning, 1974) has shown that with increased MgO contents, and at optimum CaO/S1O2 ratios, significant improvement in low temperature reducibility can be attained. The improved properties of such fluxed pellets have reportedly led to increased blast furnace efficiency and productivity (Saeki et al., 1977; Ilmoni, 1975). Less well known, however, is exactly what factors control reducibility in acid pellets. Because of this gap in knowledge, studies were undertaken of the factors affecting reducibility in acid pellets and to estimate their relative significances in modifying reduction behavior. This paper describes that part of our work done to determine the effect of bentonite on reduction behavior. Our approach was to first examine the effect of bentonite's presence on as pure an iron oxide as possible (i.e., a magnetite "superconcentrate" containing about 0.2% SiO2) so as to eliminate any gangue-binder interaction. The Paso Diablo coal project is located in the Guasare Basin in the northwestern region of Venezuela near the border with Colombia. In 1987, Carbones del Guasare SA, a joint venture comprised of Carbozulia and A.A. Antilles Coal (an Arco and AgipCoal joint venture) was formed to develop the Paso Diablo coal reserves for world markets. Regional drilling has indicated a coal resource of more than 6 Gt (6.6 billion st). Further exploration has delineated the Paso Diablo deposit as an area particularly suited for cost-effective surface mining. The calculated economically minable reserves of this area (200 Mt or 220 million st) and the coal quality characteristics are based on extensive core drilling programs. Initial coal mining operations began in August of 1987 and the mine is presently producing at a rate of 1.5 Mt/a (1.65 million stpy). The coal is hauled about 85 km (53 miles) to a barge loading terminal at Santa Cruz de Mara using highway-type haul trucks. INTRODUCTION Controlled blasting is used at some time during most civil engineering projects where there is rock excavation. Controlled blasting is often necessary because the blasting must take place in the near proximity of adjacent structures. In other instances, the blasting is controlled because a smooth perimeter is desired to minimize rock support and overbreak. The construction of tunnels and shafts for subways, rock excavations for foundations and the excavation of road cuts for interstate highways, sometimes require blasting operations which must be conducted in an urban environment. Unfortunately, blasting operations produce unwanted sounds and vibration along with their beneficial effects. Thus, in the writing of specifications for blasting in an urban environment, potential damage to adjacent structures by ground vibrations must be considered, possible damage to windows from airblasts must be considered, potential damage from fly rock must be considered, and the discomfort to people from ground vibrations, airblast, and noise must be taken into account. The contractor or the owner's engineer is faced with determining the maximum weight of explosives which may be detonated without damage to structures on adjacent property. If the weight of explosive is overestimated, the resulting damage to adjacent structures may result in costly losses. But, if the engineer or contractor is too conservative, and the weight of explosive becomes too restrictive, progress of the project may be curtailed and the cost of excavation will increase accordingly. This paper outlines the MOVIE project, which is dedicated to the development of a digital twin for an underground laboratory at the research and education mine “Forschungs- und Lehrbergwerk Reiche Zeche” in Freiberg (Germany). Data from induced rock deformations and temperature fluctuations is collected using fiber-optic sensors. The objective of the project is to establish a virtual laboratory for real-time analysis of the interactions between geology, geomechanics, geometry and ventilation. This will be achieved by integrating models from these disciplines with artificial intelligence, creating a sophisticated hybrid model. The insights gained will enhance safety and efficiency in mining through improved digital planning options, ultimately contributing to more effective resource management and operational decision-making in different mining environments.

The thermodynamic program is similar to previous mine ventilation programs but has been expanded to consider the compressibility of air. The thermodynamic program does consider: 1) air density variations, 2) humidity changes, 3) intake, exhaust, and underground fans, 4) heat transfer between rock and air, 5) refrigeration of heating plants, both surface and underground, and 6) heat generated by equipment, both diesel and electric. 110st of the compressibility factors are handled in the branch calculations. The field survey necessary to supply-data for this program is quite similar to the basic base and leap-frog pair of stations method used with most incompressible mine ventilation programs. The thermodynamic program is a complete package of ventilation network analysis which can provide mine management with good operational control and planning of mine ventilation systems.

The Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) is currently expanding capacity by extending their Metro system from South of the city to the North East end of the island. The scope of Contract 704 involved excavating a long reach of tunnel which had a complex rock/soil interface comprised of fresh granite overlaid by clayey sand. Two 6.5 m diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM’s were used to bore the tunnels. These machines were designed so that both hard and soft rock could be excavated. The cutter head was equipped with a combination of both rippers and disk cutters. Soil conditioning was achieved by delivering foam through a multiple port injection system. This very irregular profile of the interfaces posed many challenges to the equipment and the people.

One of the Swiss transalpine highways includes two remarkable tunnels: the 16.3 km long Gotthard Road Tunnel and the 9.3 km long twin tube Seelisberg Tunnel, both presently under construction. Large diameter shafts up to 900 m long are required for ventilation. Excavation techniques for rock formations ranging from loose sedimentary rock to granite and very hard siliceous limestone were carefully evaluated. The methods finally applied include excavation of shafts in hard rock, conventional drilling and blasting, excavation by ripper-tooth excavator ("Big John") in marlstone, shield protected heading in loose material and soft rock, and tunnel and shaft lining, both by poured concrete and by prefabricated elements. A critical review of the success of these methods can now be made after a five year construction period.

Martin County Coal Corporation's operations are located on Wolf Creek in Martin County in the eastern part of Kentucky. The mining complex was started in 1971 and has grown to a 2.273 Mt/a steam coal operation. All of the production goes to Duke Power Company's Belews Creek electric generating station in North Carolina. Production comes from four seams that are mined by deep and surface mining methods. Surface mining accounts for 55% of the production and the remainder comes from 2 underground mines. Continuous miners are used exclusively underground. The preparation plant was originally designed to take coal at the rate of 907 Mt/h but that has gradually been increased to 1134 Mt/h. Other cleaning equipment includes Daniels DMS vessels, Model 77 Deister tables, 355.4-mm R. & S. Hydro- cyclones, Krebs 254-m classifying cyclones, Daniels froth cells and in 1980, 3 Krebs 508-mm heavy media cyclones were added to recover some lost and misplaced material. CMI centrifugaldryers and a Hey1 & Patterson size 100 thermal dryer are also part of the coal preparation equipment.

As part of a study aimed at understanding the hydrology of in situ leach mining (ISLM), the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Cyprus Casa Grande Corporation and the University of Arizona, is investigating dynamic transmissivity conditions during ISLM of a copper oxide ore deposit. Spatial and temporal variations in ore zone transmissivity during two years of ISLM operations at the Cyprus Casa Grande mine are evaluated during sixteen intervals of steady-state injection and recovery well operation. Direct inversion of an analytical hydrologic model is used to obtain estimates of transmissivity at 58 well locations during these intervals. Univariate statistical and geostatistical methods are used to describe the temporal and/or spatial relationships that exist between transmissivity and other ISLM parameters, including average well injection pressure, average sulfuric acid concentration in leach solution, and the relative configuration of injection and recovery wells. Average transmissivity during the sixteen steady-state time intervals varies between 6.00 x 10-6 m2/min. (6.46 x 10-5 ft2/min.) and 3.61 x 10-8 m2/ min. (3.89 x 10-7 ft2/min.). A trend toward decreas¬ing transmissivity is evident during two year of ISLM operations. This decreasing trend is found to correlate with a decreasing sulfuric acid concentration in injected leach solution, and suggests increasing geochemical precipitation within the deposit. Geostatistical analyses reveal a dynamic and anisotropic transmissivity structure within the target ore zone, that is dependent upon spatial and temporal changes in injection pressure and well configuration.

In order to predict and minimize detrimental production problems due to the recycling of process water in sulfide ore processing, the influence of major species, calcium and sulfate in process water on sphalerite flotation was investigated through Hallimond tube flotation, zeta potential, diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements using sphalerite mineral sample. Assessment of process water species in flotation was done using deionized water, process water and simulated water containing calcium and sulfate ions in experiments. Hallimond flotation shows increased sphalerite float-ability in process water compared to deionized water, but no significant effect on the presence of calcium and sulfate ions in deionized water using isobutyl xanthate as a collector. The presence of calcium ions reduced the sphalerite?s negative zeta potential, while at higher concentrations, a charge reversal occurred, at about pH 11. FTIR and XPS studies revealed the presence of surface-oxidized sulfoxy and carbonate species on sphalerite at pH 11.5 in deionized water, process water and water containing calcium and sulfate ions. These surface species do not influence xanthate adsorption.

The technical excellence of separation achieved in a mineral concentration process, or any other process where two constituents of any kind are physically separated from each other, is expressed uniquely and quantitatively by the Separation Efficiency: ES = (R ? Rg) where R is the percentage of the valuable constituent and Rg the percentage of the waste appearing in the concentrate. The Separation Efficiency meets all the usual requirements of a true efficiency and is independent of the nature of the process used. It can be visualized as the percentage of the feed material that, in effect, actually undergoes complete separation while the rest of the feed is distributed randomly and unchanged into the two separation products.

The Rapidex continuous drill and blast tunneling concept utilizes a unique spiral blasting pattern that permits efficient performance with relatively small single shots, while at the same time directing major blast fragments at right angles to the tunnel axis. The concept's self-shielding geometry permits the design of a lightly shielded machine that can stay at the tunnel face firing frequent small blasts to provide rapid, virtually continuous advance. This paper describes Phase III of the development program (supported under Bureau of Mines contract H0252047) in which the "front end" of the machine?drilling loading, and shooting components, together with the shield--was fabricated and field tested underground at the White Pine Copper mine, Michigan. One of the major accomplishments of the Phase III effort was to develop a fully remote controlled loading and initiation system in which explosive slurry is pushed, through a hose into the blasthole by a small water-driven piston carrying the blasting cap. The cap is ignited via an induction coil just prior to entry into the borehole, after which a delay permits complete -withdrawal and shielding of the loading hose. The ultimate objective of the present Bureau-sponsored program is to evaluate the feasibility of mechanizing hard rock mining operations, such as development to a point where drilling, loading, shooting, and mucking can proceed simultaneously and result in increased productivity.
