In this work, the possibility of intensifying the cementation process in stirred vessels was studied by using the perforated baffles as turbulence promoters; the cementation reaction of Cu+2 on Zn was selected as a model. Zn was used in the form of a sheet lining the inner wall of an agitated vessel. Parameters considered are initial concentration of Cu+2, solution temperature, impeller rotation speed, and impeller geometry. Within the present range of parameters studied, the rate of cementation was found to increase with increasing initial concentration of Cu+2, solution temperature, and impeller rotation speed. At the same rotational speed, a flat turbine gave a higher rate of cementation than a 45° pitched turbine. The present suggested that baffles’ geometry gave superior performance in terms of mass transfer of copper cementation compared to the conventional baffle geometry. All parameters that affect the rate of cementation were correlated in the form of dimensionless equations suitable for the design and performance prediction of the agitated vessel. Potential applications of the obtained results in the field of hydrometallurgical processes and wastewater treatment were discussed.

Minimizing the effects of corrosion improves the long-term performance of the rock anchors and ground control systems in underground mines, which is fundamental for safe operation over the design period. The primary objective of this study is to explain the problems due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), strain-induced corrosion cracking (SICC) and other forms of corrosion, and why the mining industry’s ground control professionals should take this into serious consideration. It is important to clearly determine the kind of SCC mechanisms that causes roof bolt failures in order to suggest the necessary action plan to mitigate or eliminate the possibility of the cause. Pertinent literature and studies around the globe on this complicated subject are reviewed. The secondary objective is to encourage the use of corrosion-resistant ground control products in the underground mining industry in areas of high corrosion potential. Characteristics of SCC on high strength steel are also reviewed. The literature and preliminary studies to date indicate that research work is necessary in United States.

The technology employed in the processing of nickel- and cobalt¬bearing ores is a continually developing process for utilizing the natu¬ral resources available at a given time. Most of the nickel-bearing ores of commercial importance fall under the category of sulfide or lateritic ores. While the occurrences of both types of ore have been known for over a century, until 1960 sulfide ores largely from Cana¬dian mines have constituted the chief source of production for com¬mercial nickel in the Free World. Sulfide ores are readily amenable to some physical means of concentration, but the lateritic ores are not readily concentrated, and to compete economically with the sulfide ores only the high-grade garnierite ores (a type of lateritic ore) found in New Caledonia were processed to any great extent up to the time of World War II. Around 1960, a gradual shift in emphasis towards latetitic ores as a commercial source of nickel became evident. See Fig. 1. New discoveries of sulfide ores, usually located underground, had not kept pace with the steadily increasing demand for nickel. The lateritic ores, found near the surface of the earth, could be readily surveyed and mined. Lower cost processes were being developed for the extrac¬tion of nickel from lateritic ores and for a time it appeared that, based on pre-OPEC economics, the lower grade lateritic ores-down to 1.2% nickel-could satisfy an increasing share of the world demand for nickel. The sharp increase in the price of crude oil in the 1970s, however, slapped an economic damper on the lateritic ores. Processes for treat¬ing lateritic ores consume large amounts of energy; as the nickel industry entered its deep recessionary period in 1981-83, nickel pro¬duction from lateritic ores became less and less profitable than from sulfide ores. At the same time, new sulfide ores were discovered and brought into production, notably in Australia and South Africa. The chapters in Section 17 were prepared in 1973. Recent improvements in mineral dressing techniques since then include Inco's pyrrhotite separation process which can remove additional pyrrhotite from nickel concentrates, resulting in reduced sulfur dioxide emission from the Sudbury smelter, by some 25%. The chapters in this section dealing with nickel are grouped in line with the two broad categories of nickel ores. Starting with the description of nickel and cobalt ores in Chapter 2, Chapter 3 deals with the processing of sulfide ores, and Chapter 4 deals largely with lateritic ores. The intermediate steps to produce a suitable feed for extraction plants and refineries are similar in principle within the same categories, although dissimilar between sulfide and lateritic ores. Thus Inco in Canada employs flotation and so does Western Mining Corp. in Australia, although Inco's plants were started before World War II, and that of Western Mining only recently in the late 1960s. Treatment subsequent to the ore dressing step, however, shows some interesting differences. Subsidence is a surface manifestation of the underground development and exploitation of minerals, and its impact on the environment is becoming of increased concern, particularly in the face of an accelerating demand for energy and minerals. In the United States, the state-of-the-art in subsidence prediction, control, and prevention and in subsidence-related damage abatement has not progressed to the level achieved in other countries. To bridge this gap, the Bureau of Mines, through its Mining Environmental Research program, is pursuing a comprehensive subsidence investigation, specifically designed to address major problems on the local, regional, and national level.

The presence of high-grade massive sulphides near York Harbour, Newfoundland has been known since the turn of the century. In the early 1900's a small, massive-sulphide deposit was worked by conventional hand methods and yielded about 100, 000 tons of high grade copper-zinc ore. Since that time, a number of mining companies have held options on the property and an exploration adit was driven along the fourth level of the original mine. Underground drilling revealed several additional massive sulphide lenses in the range of 10, 000 to 60, 000 tons (Fig. 1). The problem facing Long Lac Mineral Exploration Ltd. when they undertook an option on the property in 1969, was to outline any possible extensions to the known sulphide lenses which were outside the reach of underground drills and to search for new ore deposits which might double the known reserves into a feasible project for development. GEOLOGY AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES: The geology is typical of many massive sulphide deposits within volcanic rocks in the Canadian Shield. The sulphide pods appear to occur along a complex andesite-basalt contact. Identification of the two volcanic types is difficult since they are almost the same colour. The most direct means of identification is by the slight difference in their magnetic susceptibilities. Pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite are the main minerals in the sul¬phide lenses. The ore is massive, differing in density from the host rock by at least 1.0 gm/cc. There is little pyrrhotite or magnetite associated with the sulphides, so there is no appreciable difference in magnetic susceptibility between the sulphides and the basalt. An algorithm is presented for optimizing the classification of surface mine material subject to excavating constraints. High-resolution, expected-profit models are optimized to classification maps subject to site-specific excavating constraints. This optimization problem defies traditional closed-form analytical solutions. A practical heuristic algorithm quickly determines the optimum final destination for material subject to realistic selectivity constraints. The expected profit could be calculated from an estimated model if the value calculations are all linear; otherwise, simulation could be used. In both cases, a single expected profit for all destinations on a high-resolution grid is the starting point for dig limits optimization. Maximizing expected profit in a risk-neutral manner is correct given the repeated nature of grade-control decisions over relatively short timeframes.

Frothers play a crucial role in sulphide and PGM ore flotation recovery, and AECI Mining Chemicals studies on PGM ores have shown significant flotation kinetic increases with the optimal frother-collector combinations. Using Senfroth 200 as the industry baseline, remarkable kinetic increases were observed with AECI Mining Chemicals developed frothers in the first concentrate. Even in the worst-case scenarios, 4E PGM recovery increased by 5% at a slightly higher concentrate grade. It is important not to limit frother dosage to a fixed value. Instead, enough frother should be added to maintain a stable bench float, measuring the dosages by frother volume before and after tests. Frothers can be specialized blends and their importance should not be underestimated. The results produced by formulating and innovating frothers to address specific industry challenges have been encouraging. Testing a frother on a plant scale does not have to be as daunting as with collectors, enabling the identification of the best frother-collector combinations at an industrial scale. AECI Mining Chemicals bench scale testwork has motivated plant-scale trials that have successfully transitioned to commercialization. This paper compares the results from metallurgical and froth stability tests and shows that occasionally frothers that have a less stable froth can have improved valuable mineral recoveries, while still exhibiting better drainage for reduced entrainment and mass pull. It was shown that caution should be used when relying only on simplified froth stability tests in the evaluation of new frothers.

"The Northgate Link Extension project is the third phase of the Sound Transit master plan to extend light rail throughout the greater Seattle metropolitan area. When completed, the Northgate Link Extension will extend the existing light rail system north by about 7 km (4.3 miles) from the University of Washington to the Northgate neighborhood. A general overview of the project alignment is provided as Fig. 1. The project was funded by a combination of federal grants and allocations from local taxes. The general contractor on the project was JCM Northlink LLC (JCM), a joint venture between Jay Dee Contractors, Frank Coluccio Construction Company and Michels Corp. SoilFreeze, Inc. was retained as a subcontractor to provide ground freezing design and construction services.The project involved the construction of two parallel 5.5-m, 25-cm (18-ft, 10-in.) (inside) diameter tunnels using earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) and precast segmental concrete tunnel liners. The two tunnels maintained roughly the same elevation along the alignment and were spaced roughly 12 m (40 ft) apart (centerline to centerline). A total of 23 cross-passages connecting the two tunnels were included at approximate 244-m (800-ft) intervals. Cross passage excavations were elliptical in shape with dimensions of approximately 5.6 m (18.5 ft) in height and 5.3 m (17 ft) in width. The cross-passages were 5.8 to 6.1 m (19 to 20 ft) long as measured between the exterior of the tunnels at springline elevation. Cross passages were intentionally located directly beneath public right-of-ways thus avoiding buildings. Many of the cross passages were located beneath narrow roads in residential neighborhoods with mature vegetation, existing utility structures and piping and limited parking areas. Excavation and support for each cross passage was completed using the sequential excavation method (SEM).The subsurface soil and ground water conditions at the cross-passage locations were described in the Northgate Link Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) prepared by Jacobs Associates and the Northgate Link Geotechnical Data Report (GDR) prepared by Shannon and Wilson, Inc. Soils along the project alignment were glacially overridden and characterized as very dense or hard. Subsurface soils consisted of cohesionless sand and gravel (CSG), cohesionless silt and fine sand (CSF), cohesive clay and silt (CCS) and till and till-like deposits (TLD)."

Fossil resin types occurring in the Hiawatha seam of the Wasatch Plateau coal field, Utah, have been separated according to color and their physical and chemical properties evaluated. These resin types were separated into four color fractions, yellow, amber, light brown, and dark brown. Each resin type has then been subjected to comprehensive spectroscopic examination and other physical methods of characterization. Included among the spectroscopic methods of characterization are FTIR and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Physical properties that have been measured include density, optical, and magnetic properties. These analyses reveal that the resins are distinct from other macerals, predominantly nonaromatic in nature with small amounts of oxygen functionalities and a low degree of unsaturation. The four resin types show distinct differences in certain physical and chemical properties such as density, hexane solubility, magnetic susceptibility, and aromaticity.

Flotation of rutile with N-benzoyl-N-phenyl-hydroxylamine (N-BPHA) has been investigated. Initially, floatability tests were performed in a Hallimond tube. The results indicated that rutile was floatable in the pH range from 2 to 4 at N-BPHA concentration between 2x10-3 M and 2x10-2 M. Selectivity against hematite was recognized when operating at pH values below 2. Following the hypothesis of the formation of a surface chelate between N-BPHA and titanium ion, this compound was precipitated from a solution of Ti(SO4) to which N-BPHA was added. I.R. spectrometry oft the rutile before and after treatment with N-BPHA solution confirmed the presence on the rutile surface of the same compound. The absorption isotherm and kinetics were determined by analyzing N-BPHA in solution with an U.V. technique. A hypothesis for the mechanism of adsorption of N-BPHA on rutile is suggested.

Mine planners are under pressure to evaluate the impact of changing economic times and newly acquired data on the mine plan. Incorporating change, such as commodity prices, customer sales, changing cost assumptions, and newly acquired geologic data into the mine plans requires quick turn-around for model building and planning to keep the mine plan on pace with changes as they are occurring. Because of the length of time required to perform some of the geologic modeling and mine planning tasks, planning frequency may not be keeping pace with the frequency of change. This paper discusses how one company has increased the frequency rate and accuracy of mine plans to keep current with incoming data, ensuring mine plans reflect the latest information, thereby minimizing or eliminating production cost variance.

While there have always been mining activities on the outcrops of the copper deposits around Tsumeb, large scale mining activities in Namibia only started in colonial times. Originally focusing on the known deposits, the then German Geological Survey and independent geologists soon discovered significant deposits all over the country. This eventually lead to intensive mining operations all over the country on copper, gold, diamonds, fluorspar and finally uranium. Ever since those days, mining has been one of the major economical factors of Namibia?s development, as shown in picture 1. In the Central Namib Desert mining on base metals started in 1901, and first uranium deposits were discovered as soon as 1910, later followed by others, this did, however, not lead to any mining activities on those uranium deposits in the following decades. [ ] The upswing in the use of nuclear energy in the 1960s and early 1970s triggered some extensive uranium exploration worldwide and also in Namibia. Several airborne radiometric overviews were conducted by the Geological Survey at this stage and eventually the first uranium mine was commissioned in 1976. In the following three decades, the focus of prospecting activities in Namibia shifted away from uranium again. However, since 2000 the forecast for a developing and growing global economy and its even stronger growing energy demand have triggered a large number of nuclear energy projects worldwide, thus increasing the installed nuclear energy generation capacity from 387 GW today to more than 490 GW in 2025.

Characterizing the abrasiveness of soil/rock and the allowable wear of hard-facing products in various conditions is a critical factor in selection of the best material for certain applications related to drilling and excavation in mining and construction industries. The Soil Abrasion Index test machine at Colorado School of Mines (CSM) is one of the recently developed unique systems capable of testing soil/crushed rock abrasion under various conditions, such as dry, wet, and saturated settings. It is also capable of testing the performance of various types of hard-facing materials in a given geo-material. This paper studies the wear properties of different hard-facing materials in various crushed rocks from a surface mining operation in the iron range region of the USA. The hard-facing materials include regular and hardened steels and six different specialized hard facings, based on chromium carbide. The soil/rock include a standard sand and two rock samples from the surface mine. Fourteen abrasion tests were conducted, where the weight loss of each hard-facing material was measured over timespans up to 1 h of testing. The results show the distinct performance differences between the steels with 17 HRC and 43 HRC hardness and the hard-facing products for this application. The results show the possibility to evaluate the abrasiveness of different rocks at a mine or construction site and the performance of various hard facings in similar working conditions. This is a practical solution for selection of the cutting tool or reinforcement of bucket lips and truck beds for comparison of relative wear life between different wear-resistant materials.

The warm southwestern desert of Arizona is an ideal location for ASARCO's new Sacaton Unit. The climate of this arid region played a major role in the design considerations of the Unit's crushing and concentrating facilities. Low yearly rainfall and relatively high yearly temperatures are a combination that was taken advantage of when designing the surface facilities. The plantsite, located due west of the mine pit, is in an area originally covered with sparse desert vegetation, underlain to an average depth of 125 feet by desert alluvium. The entire plantsite area slopes gently to the southwest at approximately 1%. Ground conditions at the plantsite area were not acceptable for construction due to the collapsability of the wetted soil when under loaded conditions, Overburden from the pit area was used to form the foundation for the entire plantsite. This waste material, entirely devoid of rock, was placed and compacted to an elevation approximately 20 feet above the desert floor. Elevating the plantsite by filling with waste material not only provided an adequate construction foundation but also eliminated the possibility of flooding from run-off in the surrounding desert areas.

Numerical simulations have been used to investigate roof fall in the past decades. Comparing to the continuum based methods, the discrete element method has been well recognized for its excellent performance in simulating large strain problems and fracturing processes in the rock mass. However, the discrete element method has its limitations. When simulating a large-scale problem, a large number of particles are required, which consumes significant computational resources. In the present study, a 3D numerical model coupled with the finite-difference method (FDM) and the discreteelement method (DEM) was created to simulate the laminated roof failure in an eastern coal mine in the US. In the FDM-DEM coupled model, the laminated roof of the entry is represented by an assembly of bonded particles using PFC3D. The laminated roof is simulated by adding parallel discontinuities. The discontinuities are given certain stiffness and strength in the model. The ribs, floor, and far-field surrounding rock are represented by continuum zones using FLAC3D. The strength of the discontinuities is varied sequentially and the fracturing of the laminated roof was analyzed with respect to entry advance. The results showed that the laminated roof fractures along the discontinuities while an intact roof fractures in a dome shape. Increasing the strength of discontinuity could enlarge the tensile zone inside the laminated roof and hence change the crack distribution. In addition, the crack quantity in the laminated roof behind the advancing face decreases with the increment of discontinuity strength while this trend is not occurring ahead of the advancing face. The simulation demonstrated that coupled method using PFC3D/FLAC3D can reproduce the laminated roof failure in underground coal mines.

In flotation practices, as particles become finer, such as smaller than 20 μm, process efficiency declines markedly. Selective agglomeration of fine particles is a technique to enhance the recovery of fine valuable minerals in flotation circuits. Different agglomerating methods have been introduced and tested. One method that has recently received much attention is to make use of magnetic force to aggregate fine particles. A selective aggregation of fine paramagnetic particles, such as sulfide minerals, can be achieved in the high-intensity magnetic field prior to or during flotation. The method is simple, selective and effective for fine particles and has low operational cost, though a minimum magnetic susceptibility for fine grains is required to promote the process. In this paper, the implementation of the ProFlote magnetic conditioning device in Boliden’s Garpenberg old concentrator in Sweden, where a complex massive sulfide ore is treated, is presented and discussed based on Boliden’s Garpenberg plant. The results showed an increase in the flotation recovery of fine valuable minerals. Zinc (Zn) production was increased by between 1,100 and 1,500 t/a, while salable yearly silver (Ag) production was increased by 1,500 kg. The copper (Cu) grade in the final concentrate was increased by 1 percent, while reductions in its Zn and lead (Pb) grades were obtained. The North Singhbhum Mobile Belt (NSMB) lies between two crustal-scale shear zones, the South Purulia Shear Zone (SPSZ) at the north, and the Singhbhum Shear Zone (SSZ) at the south. The Babaikundi-Birgaon Axis (BBA) is an east-west trending secondary shear zone in the NSMB lying south of SPSZ, which is known for the occurrence of gold along with other sulfide minerals within the quartz reefs. The present study has been carried out at north of Ichadih village, which lies on the BBA. The present study attempts combined electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and self-potential methods along a profile of 470-m length in the Ichadih area to map the potential mineralized zones. Initially, ERT sections generated by Wenner, Wenner- Schlumberger, dipole-dipole, and joint inversion of the combined array have been analyzed, and results are validated through the analysis of model resolution. A prominent low resistivity (10–100 Ωm) associated with quartz reef/limonitic quartz reef at a depth of approximately 30–85 m, encircled by a high resistive (more than 10,000 Ωm) formation associated with metasedimentary rock, has been delineated using joint inversion of the combined array. Further, analysis of self-potential (SP) anomaly using particle swarm optimization inversion also confirms the prominent low SP anomaly at a depth of 77.3 m, which is analogous to the low resistivity anomaly identified in the joint inversion of the combined geo-electric array. Subsequent analysis of a complex synthetic geo-electrical model analogous to the present field situation proves the efficacy of the joint inversion of combined arrays. As a whole, joint inversion of multi-array data is established as an efficient technique for better subsurface imaging in case of the complex subsurface structure. In-depth analyses confirm the possibility of sulfide mineral-rich deposit (quartz reef/limonitic quartz reef) which requires further geological drilling and lithogeochemical sample analysis, for possible future exploration.

Calcite has found many applications in the industrialized countries recently, such as filler for paper, paint, plastics, rubber and food. Furthermore, calcite separates many toxic elements, and thus it is used in water treatment, and it is also used to raise the pH of drinking water. Due to its special features, calcite has been characterized as a useful coating and reinforcement filler for applications. Finer particle size of calcite has been determined to provide improved features for all of these applications. For submicron particle production, wet milling is selected over dry milling to produce finer particle sizes. Wet stirred media mills are also used in many industries. For that reason, this study investigated the effects of operating parameters on particle size reduction in the wet grinding process. The knowledge acquired by this study will allow the finding of optimal operating parameters for a stirred media mill to optimize specific energy consumption and reduce particle size.

The sulphur shortage that has occurred in the past two years has directed attention more and more toward sour natural gas reserves, Wellhead values of sour gas vary widely depending upon the acid gas composition, location, market conditions, and necessary processing charges. Preparation of a saleable residue gas is considerably more involved and expensive than that normally encountered in treating a sweet gas. Recent revisions in sales gas specifications have increased capital costs and processing charges. The presence of hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide in a natural gas contributes to shrinkage factors that may approach 50%. Fuel required by the gas sweetening process and sulphur slant tail gas incineration also contributes to a further reduction in the volume of residue gas available for sale. The additional processing facilities involving gas sweetening, mercaptan removal, expanded utilities, sulphur recovery and sulphur handling, all demand additional operating and maintenance staff. A favorable sulphur market under certain conditions may justify the processing of sour gas whereby sulphur is either a by-product or a co-product, Five typical cases involving different compositions of sour gas are presented for evaluation.
