The objective of this research was to conduct field-scale experiments at an operating surface coal mine in order to determine the impact of the bucket fill factor on dragline production rate and energy consumption. Data collected from a dragline monitoring system were recorded in a specifically designed software tool and the relationship among these parameters was established. an algorithm for the determination of the ?best? fill factor was developed and integrated in the software. It was determined for the analyzed dragline in the mine that energy consumption in the digging phase can be reduced by 36% and production rate can be increased by 1.4% for a bucket fill factor of about 80%, a fill distance of 19.8 m (65 ft) (i.e., 3.1 bucket lengths) and a bucket fill time of 15 sec. the method developed and applied in this study may help dragline operators to determine the fill factor that will increase production rates and reduce energy consumption in specific surface coal mines. The Musaimeer pump station and outfall project located in Doha Qatar, was designed to collect and manage ground and stormwater and then discharge the treated waters offshore. The project constructed a long outfall tunnel using an EPB TBM with segmental lining, each tunnel ring being 1.35 m in length with an internal diameter of 3.7 m.. The diffuser structure was a 6-arm structure, measuring 294m by 40 m connected to a central manifold in turn connected to the TBM constructed tunnel via a riser shaft drilled from an off-shore barge. This technical paper will discuss the planning, methodology and construction practices employed to connect the TBM tunnel to the diffuser structure 10.2 km offshore.

This study aimed to identify a way to reduce the use of bentonite in the pelletization of magnetite. With this goal, different combinations of binders were compared to bentonite by examining the quality of pellets obtained by balling drum agglomeration. Pellets were subjected to routine tests that included simple compression of the wet and dry 105°C pellets, dropping wet pellets to determine their ability to survive handling and submitting pellets to thermal shock to determine how they tolerate drying and preheating. The best results use sodium silicate (1.5%) as a binder and show that it is possible to pelletize iron ore without using bentonite.

This paper describes uses of sodium sulfide in the flotation of oxide and sulfide minerals of copper, lead, and zinc. The activation and depression effects of sodium sulfide are of particular importance because of their applications with oxidized lead and copper ores. In spite of its industrial importance; however, the nature of the heterogenious reactions between sulfide ions in solution and the surface of oxidized minerals has not been fully understood. Hence, proposed mechanisms of the sulfide action in flotation, methods of measuring and monitoring of sodium sulfide in flotation pulps, and variables influencing the sulfide addition are analyzed. A review of recent studies shows that sodium sulfide addition to flotation pulps can be monitored and hence the optimum dosage controlled using the platinum and/or sulfide specific ion electrodes. The use of these electrodes for improved reproducibility of bench-scale experimental data and plant implementation of laboratory results is described.

Knowledge of the behaviour of flotation machines had developed and increased considerably over the last few years. Although much work remains to be done on the study of the fundamental processes that influence the collection of hydrophobic particles at an air-water interface, there is enough information to permit the building of realistic models of the gross flotation behaviour of various ores. These models serve as an ideal base for the development of simulation techniques for the steady-state behaviour of entire flotation plants that consist of a large number of individual flotation machines. Simulation techniques have a very real role to play in assisting with the design of new plants and in improving the operation of exisiting plants. Recently, highly efficient data-logging systems have been introduced on flotation plants. These systems are based on the on-line measurement of volumetric flowrate, pulp densities, and metal contents, and they generate enormous quantities of information regarding the operation of the plant. Unfortunately, this information is largely wasted at the present time because efficient data-reduction techniques, although available10 are not in common use. Simulation techniques play a central role in such data reduction because they form the essential link between the fundamental kinetic flotation processes on the one hand and the plant data on the other.

Bauxite residue (red mud) is an alkaline waste derived from the industrial process for extraction of alumina from bauxite ore. Some bauxite residues contain considerable concentrations of critical metals, for example, rare earth elements. Lithium in red mud was also reported as a potential resource. In the current study, a Li-rich red mud was leached using acetic acid to investigate the leaching behavior of lithium followed by neutralizing with hydrochloric or oxalic acid. By neutralizing red mud using diluted hydrochloric acid (0.01 mol/L), 58.04–60.27% of lithium was leached using 25% acetic acid at 95 °C for 60 min. In the meantime, more than 95% of sodium and 85% of calcium were also dissolved in the leachate solution. While oxalic acid (0.5 mol/L) was used to neutralize red mud prior to acetic acid leaching, lithium performed lower leaching efficiencies (42.41–46.88%) in comparison of using of hydrochloric acid–neutralized red mud. Nevertheless, these leaching efficiencies of lithium were close to that of calcium and much higher than those of sodium under the condition. In this study, 25% (v/v) of acetic acid, at 85 °C for 60 min, was demonstrated as optimum conditions for lithium extraction from oxalic acid–neutralized red mud using acetic acid. The results would be useful and of interest for lithium recovery and purification from red mud.

The Alligator Ridge Mine is located 70 miles northwest of Ely in White Pine County, Nevada. Development of the mine began in the late 1970's as a joint venture between Amselco Minerals, Inc. and Occidental Minerals Corporation, with Amselco as the operating partner. Early in 1983 Nerco Minerals Company acquired Occidental's share of the property. The mine and ore processing facility have operated at capacity since 1981 producing 680,000 tonnes of ore and 1,900 kg of gold per year. The gold ore deposits at Alligator Ridge consist of disseminated micron-size gold particles in a silicified siltstone matrix. The deposit comprises three separate but adjacent areas of mineralization that are designated as Vantage 1, Vantage 2, and Vantage 3 after the name of the basin in which the deposits lie.

In opening, I want to thank the program committee and members of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME for the opportunity to speak to you. Various chapters of AIME this past year have expressed interest in the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act. We want to see that interest continue, because the reason for the legislation was the safety and health of the industry's workforce. The Department of the Interior was directed by the Congress to administer the provisions of the Act and is therefore held directly accountable for the success or failure of its intent. We intend to see it succeed. Among other things, the Act does provide for education and training under Section 15. This provision has been implemented and is expanding. However, the responsibility of my office is inspection and enforcement and that is my subject today.

Deep Well turbine pumps receive constantly increasing application to the problem of mining water and other fluids from great depths. Many installations of medium settings are presently operating successfully and it is felt that mach greater depths are immediately within reach. Settings and lifts in excess of 2000 feet: are not at all out of reason with present knowledge experience, and materiels; however, conditions of individual applications will govern in each case and dictate methods and possibilities to the designer. Design and operating problems of deep set -turbine pumps ire discussed together with a description of various types of equipment falling within this category. Although the deep well turbine pump has been produced In the vertical turbine pump industry for many years, the connotation of the word "deep" still remains questionable. Among the manufacturers of this type of machinery, answers to the question implying the practical limitation of setting for a deep well pump will vary to an extreme. Most pump designers are in accord that this type of equipment has not yet been exploited to its fullest degree; however, the subject is admittedly fraught with unsolved problems and un¬tried solutions so that such a discussion must necessarily derive from personal opinion and, belief., even though based on substantial experience and background. For this reason, it will be stipulated that the present writing will deal with what may be termed euphemistically ?a highly controversial subject.? During the nineteenth century, a paper was published under proper authority proving beyond question that the human body could not withstand speeds exceeding 20 miles per hour. As a limitation, this looks ' pretty ridiculous to us today. At the beginning of the twentieth century, there was not a single machine in operation that could be described as mullti-stage deep well centrifugal pump. As a matter of fact, very few centrifugal pumps of any type wire operating against heads in excess of 50 feet, since such applications were considered impractical. In the

It has been reported in the literature that there is a substantial economic incentive for removing sulfur from coal. Therefore, U. s. Steel initiated an investigation to determine the feasibility of lowering the sulfur content of its Pittsburgh-seam coal. Preliminary crushing and washability studies on a representa-tive sample indicated that substantial sulfur reductions could be attained. Figure 1 shows the effect of the top size of a given coal sample on the sulfur content of the float-l.45 specific-gravity fraction of coal. At a top size of 3 inches, the raw-coal sulfur content of 2.32 percent was reduced to 1.64 percent. Crushing to a top size of 20 mesh reduced the raw-coal sulfur to 1.25 percent. Below a top size of one inch, the sulfur content decreased rapidly as top size was decreased. Figure 2 shows the effect of specific gravity of separation on pyritic sulfur. Normally this coal has an organic-sulfur content of approximately 1 percent. As expected, pyritic sulfur was reduced as the separating gravity was lowered for all the various size fractions shown. The rate of decrease in pyritic sulfur was gradual above 1.45 specific gravity, but great below 1.45. Greater sulfur reductions were attained on the coarser sizes with decreasing

As the demand for most industrial minerals on the world market continues to climb, educational institutions maintain traditional policy in emphasizing chiefly metallic ore deposits and energy resources in addition to the general disciplines. In spite of their increasing importance, few universities exhibit great depth with respect to industrial minerals courses due to the shortage of specialized faculty in a category this broad. As new ideas are formulated and technological advances are developed in the field of industrial minerals, the classroom still exists as a student's primary source of information. This opportunity to give today's students the benefit of modern developements has not been utilized to its utmost potential.

Loss of visibility due to the occurrence of atmospheric fogging in underground mine airways can lead to a reduction in travel times and loss of production efficiency, an increase in the frequency of vehicular and foot traffic accidents and difficulty in checking rock surfaces for instability and loose material. Where hot and humid surface air meets colder underground air, conditions for fog formation nay be present. Further, suspended particulate matter from diesel exhausts or stoping operations together with slow movement of air along passageways nay contribute to formation. The study describes an investigation being undertaken with the cooperation of Kennecott's Ozark Lead Company to identify causes of the problem.

Large surface mining projects in sparsely populated regions of the West have the potential to create disruptions in an area's social and economic character with potential effects on man that can far outweigh the physical and ecological effects on man's environment. The data and analyses involved in addressing the socioeconomic issues are additional to those traditionally associated with surface coal mining, such as those concerning land reclamation and water quality. Appropriate socioeconomic studies in conjunction with mine-planning can identify the potential problem areas in order that project measures can be taken to maximize the beneficial impacts and minimize the adverse effects of surface coal mining. The information required to conduct such socioeconomic analyses, available data sources, and the applicable analyses are described. Overall impacts of some proposed Western surface mines are summarized and potential mitigating steps discussed.

"Twin Creeks is a gold mining complex that is part of Newmont’s Nevada operations. The mining complex is composed of two openpits, Mega and Vista, external ore sources and a set of existing stockpiles, all of which provide ore for an autoclave, an oxide mill and a heap leach. Mega pit provides sulfide ore for the autoclave, whereas Vista pit provides oxide ore for the oxide mill and the heap leach. Both pits operate the same mining equipment and their extraction sequence must, therefore, be optimized simultaneously. Stringent blending requirements are associated with the operation of the autoclave for the sulfide ore. Strategic blending optimization on a large scale has brought significant value to the operation by increasing synergies. This paper presents the implementation of a stochastic optimization framework for the long-term production planning at Twin Creeks that simultaneously optimizes mining, stockpiling, blending and processing decision variables. The uncertainty and variability associated with the different sources of material are incorporated in the optimization model by means of stochastic simulations. The stochastic solution generated shows substantial benefits by increasing forecasted recoverable gold, leading to increased cash flows, while reducing the risk of not achieving forecasts by increasing the probabilities of meeting production and blending targets.IntroductionMine operations consist of multiple components such as mineral deposits, stockpiles, external sources, mills and autoclaves. These components represent a mineral value chain, also known in the literature as a mining complex (Montiel and Dimitrakopoulos 2015; Goodfellow and Dimitrakopoulos 2016). The material extracted from the mines flows through the different components and is transformed into sellable products. This flow of material in a mineral value chain involves complex, nonlinear transformations that render the use of industry-standard optimizers difficult. Furthermore, the optimization of a mining complex can be formulated as a mixed-integer, nonlinear optimization program with millions of integer variables representing mining, blending, stockpiling and processing decisions, prohibiting the use of conventional nonlinear optimization approaches. Previous methods that consider the joint optimization of multiple components of the mineral value chain are available (Hoerger, Seymour and Hoffman, 1999; Chanda, 2005; Stone et al., 2005; Wooller, 2005; Whittle, 2007, 2010; Bodon et al., 2010). Although these methods add value by increasing the synergy between the different components of the mining complex, they rely on simplifying assumptions that constrain their efficacy, while ignoring a most critical aspect. The latter aspect includes the geological uncertainty and actual variability of the materials in the mineral deposits mined and are supplied to the related mineral value chain, similarly to conventional life-of-mine planning methods used for individual mines (Dimitrakopoulos, Farrelly and Godoy, 2002; Godoy and Dimitrakopoulos, 2011; Spleit and Dimitrakopoulos, 2017). Additional simplifying assumptions may include: the consideration of a limited number of components, the combination of different methods, the aggregation of variables, fixed production schedules the definition of policies prior to optimization, such as cutoff- grade definition or destination of mining blocks, the linearization of nonlinear transformation functions and/or the disregard for the uncertainty of several critical parameters (Whittle, 2007). The simultaneous optimization of multiple components of a mining complex was introduced by Newmont. Hoerger, Seymour and Hoffman (1999) implemented a mixed-integer programming formulation to optimize Newmont’s Nevada operations. The model is based on the work of Urbaez and Dagdelen (1999) and simultaneously optimizes the extraction of materials from multiple deposits and the delivery of ore to multiple plants, as well as as"

ABOUT BENTONITE TUNNELLING Much has been written and many learned papers given on this subject whose generic term is Slurry Tunnelling. This paper is about the particular form of slurry tunnelling known as the Bentonite Tunnelling System. This method. of tunnelling was invented by J.V. Bartlett of consulting engineers, Mott Hay and Anderson in 1964. The general principles are incorporated in British Patent No. 1083322. It was not until the early 1970's that serious experimental work was started to prove the technical feasibility of the process. In the U.K. in 1971 Edmund Nuttall Limited started on an experimental length of 3.8m diameter tunnel at New Cross in London. In Germany at about the same time Wayss and Freytag were starting on a 3.7m diameter collector sewer tunnel in Hamburg. In Japan early slurry tunnelling work was carried out in the 1960's. In the early 1970's a large number of slurry tunnels of various diameters were carried out in that country. This paper is being presented at a time when this system of tunnelling has become an accepted method throughout the developed world. As a result of the work carried out so far there is now a large amount of data existing regarding the effects on the ground in the immediate area of the tunnel, settlement at the surface and the ability of the system to cope with ground varying from clays to coarse gravels and containing large erratics such as granite boulders. When a new tunnelling project starts, it has been a vital tradition for decades to cast and erect master rings horizontally on a flat surface to demonstrate the compliance with dimensional tolerances. Some tenders ask for the erection of two or even three rings upon each other or repeated master ring erections at intervals throughout the project. Especially for large diameters, this is a challenging and risky task for the workforce in the segment factory. A truck-mounted crane is often necessary, and in some cases it can take up to a week to complete a master ring. The concept of virtual rings has the potential to replace this tradition by assembling master rings digitally instead of physically. This is based on a best-fit approach, considering the 3D coordinates from laser tracker measurements of segments or segment moulds. Building a virtual ring, a sub-millimeter accuracy can be achieved, the alignment of neighboring circumferential and ring joints observed, and the fit of bolt holes checked. The traditional method, on the other hand, is discussed controversially despite the significant amount of work and risks—particularly as the horizontal position of the ring and absence of gaskets do not simulate the reality in the excavated tunnel. This paper will highlight the technical aspects of virtual rings, as well as their pros and cons, illustrated by a case study from London Thames Tideway where a total of 30 physical master rings could be replaced by virtual rings.

Introduction Ontario's diverse industrial mineral resource base includes structural minerals such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, building stone, clay, shale, limestone, and dolostone. These resources are used to produce aggregates, brick, metallurgical stone, fillers, cement, lime, and other construction materials. The majority of the operations are in deposits of Palezoic and Quaternary age in southern Ontario, close to the major markets. Province-wide, there were more than 140 Mt (154 million st) of aggregates produced in 1985. About 115 Mt (128 million st) of that was produced in southern Ontario with the rest being largely from Crown land in northern Ontario. Structural industrial minerals account for more than 80% of the value of total industrial mineral production. The remaining 20% is accounted for by the nonstructural minerals, such as salt, which is produced in the southwestern part of the province. A host of other nonstructural industrial minerals are known. Production, though, is currently restricted to calcite, gypsum, quartz, talc, nepheline syenite, and byproduct metallurgical sulfur products (Fig. 1). Major production is close to the large markets of urbanized southern Ontario and the northeastern and northcentral US. With an abundant variety of industrial mineral resources and the large population within 650 km (400 miles) of most deposits, the market offers great potential. Ontario's nine million people accounted for about 35% of Canada's entire $476.3 billion gross domestic product in 1985. This equates to about one-third of the nation's buying power being within a 200-km (125-mile) radius of Toronto. This major concentration of industrial and economic activity has resulted in a well-developed industrial minerals industry that fulfills most of the structural industrial minerals demand in Ontario. Nonstructural industrial minerals are similarly well placed to compete in this high demand area. Although Ontario manufacturers still import some of these materials, Ontario products are achieving significant market share. And, they serve the needs of neighboring provinces and states. Present production and trends Ontario has traditionally produced significant amounts of industrial minerals. This produc¬tion had a value of $956 million in 1984 (Table 1). Structural materials production in 1985 and 1986 approached or exceeded levels not seen since the early 1970s. Many new products have been developed using these raw materials. From mine to mill, the 3D characterization of particles ranging in size from meters to micrometers is now possible. A brief review of X-ray tomography for mineral processing is given with recent advances considered, such as high-speed scanning and image analysis procedures to describe important particle properties, including size, shape and composition. Considering these new 3D characterization tools, applications in mineral processing are discussed for high-resolution X-ray microtomography (HRXMT) laboratory analysis of particles ranging from 20 mm to 5 μm, with a voxel resolution of about 1 μm, including (1) multiphase particle characterization by HRXMT and comparison with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), (2) particle damage state as a result of blasting/comminution, (3) liberation characterization to describe expected separation efficiency, (4) exposed grain surface area analysis to explain the flotation of locked particles, and (5) floc size, shape and water content for polymer-induced flocculation. Finally, applications in mineral processing for plant-site analysis using high-speed X-ray computed tomography (HSXCT) are examined, including, for example, coal washability analysis, the analysis of crusher plant products, and the analysis of pebble phosphate products from central Florida. Scanning rates on the order of 1 kg/min for particle sizes ranging from 150 mm to 1 mm are possible, with a voxel resolution of about 100 μm. For coarse particles smaller than 5 to 10 mm, high scanning rates of more than 300 t/h may be possible at a voxel resolution of about 1 mm.

The influence of selective chemical dispersants on the hydrocycloning of a copper ore slurry is illustrated. In the % solids and slurry feed rate ranges associated with industrial practice, desirable changes in both d50 and Sharpness Index values of classification were measured with the use of chemical as compared to tests with no chemical usage.
