Two coal mine shafts recently completed in Franklin County, Ill., afford experience and accomplishment to warrant review, These shafts provide access to a tract with a potential recovery of one hundred million tons. This work provided the initial sinking by other than a contractor's organization since 1918. Four additional shafts required during the interim were sunk under contract arrangement with others. Supervisory contact and inspection afforded experience to govern planning and conduct of the recent work.

"In this paper, we consider an underground production scheduling problem consisting of determining the proper time interval or intervals in which to complete each mining activity so as to maximize a mine’s discounted value while adhering to precedence, activity durations, and production and processing limits. We present two different integer programming formulations for modeling this optimization problem. Both formulations possess a resource-constrained project scheduling problem structure. The first formulation uses a fine time discretization and is better suited for tactical mine scheduling applications. The second formulation, which uses a coarser time discretization, is better suited for strategic scheduling applications. We illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of each formulation with examples.IntroductionProject scheduling is an important aspect of underground mine planning that consists of determining the start dates for a given set of activities so as to maximize the value of a project while adhering to operational and re-source-availability constraints. Important activities that require scheduling include development, drilling, stoping and other ore-extraction techniques, and backfilling. Precedence relation-ships impose an order in which activities can be carried out based on their location in the mine: for example, the activity a associated with development of an area must be completed before the activity a´ associated with extraction of that same area can begin. Re-sources include attributes of the mining operation, such as the amount of extraction and mill capacity available per time period, and are determined by capital and equipment availability and other factors. In this paper, for our set-ting, resource-availability constraints consider the amounts of material that can be extracted and sent to the mill — that is, processed — per time period."

In room and pillar mining a large number of working points are arranged to follow a mining pattern. Geological and roof control problems can be overcome or their effect minimized by varying this pattern. Longwall mining on the other hand, fixes the mining pattern for anyone panel. This aspect of longwall mining leads to constancy, so that a well-conceived organization, ventilation, dust and roof control systems lead to daily repetition and subsequent simplicity of control. All the same, a fixed mining pattern calls for a very careful consideration and selection of design parameters. (Ref. 1.)

It is well known that the major fractures and lineaments presently recorded in Western North America are preferentially oriented along a general northwest direction (Figure 1). There are other features, however, more subtle, more elusive as a rule and which can only be inferred, occurring at right angle to this broad NW direction. It is intended a) to examine some of these NE or transverse trends, b) to compare these regional NE breaks to similar ones that transversally cut through the eastern part of the European Tethys, more specifically in Iran and Turkey, and c) to study their potential relationship to mineralization in both areas.

Natural sodium sulfate is obtained from both brines and solid deposits. The brines almost always contain other salts with sodium chloride predominating. They may be obtained from surface occurrences, such as Great Salt Lake or from shallow subterranean deposits. Althought many sodium sulfate minerals are known to exist, only three are of commercial significance. These are thenardite, the anhydrous salt; mirabilite, the decahydrate; and glauberite, the double salt of sodium and calcium sulfate. The reader is referred to Weisman (1983) for details on mineralogy and geology of sodium sulfate minerals. Sodium sulfate deposits, either in the form of brine or solid minerals, are found in many parts of the world. Natural sources, by far, provide the primary supply of commercial grades in Canada, Mexico, Spain, and probably in the U.S.S.R., Chile, Argentina, and Turkey. In the United States, production of natural material and synthetic (including by-product) are about equal in volume and have been for many years.

"Money and reputations can be lost in bad projects. Causes of bad mineral processing projects include poor contract definition and purchase of equipment without adequate test work. However, the root cause of many of the problems that can lead to bad projects is not any inanimate object, bad weather or catastrophic natural event but the people working on the projects. Because the people are so critical to the success of a mineral processing project, one must have suitably qualified and experienced people (SQEP) in all key positions. Characteristics that define SQEP include people who have successfully executed projects of similar size before; have undertaken projects treating the same minerals and producing the same valuable products and people who are familiar with designing, operating and implementing the required technologies and unit operations.To minimize the likelihood of future bad mineral processing projects, five recommendations are put forward in relation to the people aspect of a project.1. Attempt to retain SQEP during any down turn in the mining economic cycle so thatthe knowledge and experience can be kept within the industry.2. Increase the effort in attracting young people into the industry and retaining them.3. Set up robust training program to give young professionals a firm foundation of what real life projects and operations are like.4. Provide mentoring and continuous training for people after they have completed their formal graduate training program. Their career progression should be appropriately monitored and controlled.5. People working in projects must be exposed to as many detailed design and other finer issues as possible so that they can comprehend the amount of work required to deliver a project successfully."

Alunite (KAl3(SO4)2(OH)6] is one of the important nonbauxitic resources for aluminum in U.S.A. The major gangue material associated with a unite ore body is quartz. Experimental results indicate that oleic acid flotation of alunite is quite effective in upgrading the ore. The flotation chemistry of the alunite/oleate system has been investigated using various techniques such as: hallimond tube flotation response, measurement of adsorption density using I4C labeled oleated, electrokinetic measurements, infrared spectral studies, contact angle measurements and thermochemical measurements using an isothermal microcalorimeter. Alunite has been found to float readily with oleate in the pH range 4-10.5 and its flotation response is enhanced at higher temperatures. The PZC of alunite has been determined to be at pH 7.2 ± 0.15 which agrees with what would be predicted from solution chemistry and from the flotation response with physically adsorbed collectors. Infrared spectra show a specific peak in the range 1585-1600 cm-1 which has been attributed to the formation of an aluminum oleate surface species. Both adsorption density measurements and infrared spectra indicate that during adsorption multilayers are formed. The heat of adsorption of oleate on alunite has been found to be endothermic and of the order of 4-6 KJ/ mole.

Gold Fields Operating Co.-Chimney Creek has conducted numerous ore reserve modeling studies In order to optimize the estimates of the gold grades and tonnage distributions. Improved models continue to be produced for the major pits which Increase confidence levels required by Gold Fields management and provide the basis for more accurate long and intermediate term mine planning. Various kriging and non-kriging estimation techniques are used at Gold Fields -Chimney Creek Mine. This paper reviews the modeling histories and, current procedures used to construct these models with particular emphasis on the North Pit deposit.

Wet grinding rod mills have been used for 50 years to grind ores and to make specification sand. The application of wet grinding rod mills is well understood. Until recently, there have been very few installations of dry grinding rod mills. The basic principles learned from wet grinding rod mills that were used in the application of dry grinding rod mills are 1. It is possible to extrapolate the performance of 5' and 6' diameter wet grinding rod mills into larger diameter rod mills with the larger mills performing as predicted. Wet grinding rod mills as large as 14' diameter (inside shell) by 20' long using 19.5' long rods are in use operating satisfactorily. 2. Wet grinding rod mills generally grind more efficiently when the fines are left in the mill feed than when the fines are removed from the feed. 3. Wet grinding rod mills produce little tramp oversize and generally can be operated in open circuit except when very close control on the top size in the product is required. When operated in closed circuit, the circulating load is normally less than 100%. 4. The power required for the desired grind can be accurately determined from the work indices obtained from rod mill grindability tests on the material to be ground. Where required it is necessary to, apply inefficiency factors for oversize feed and for larger or smaller than normal- ratios of reduction. Recent applications for rod mills have developed where it is required that dry grinding be used. These recent applications cover the grinding of 1. Lead sinter, lead slag and limestone. 2. Iron ore. 3. Silica for making glass sand. 4. Cement clinker. 5. Coke.

A revised and expanded edition of a previous paper** dealing with reactions of calcium and magnesium oxides and hydroxides with pulverized coal fly ash is presented. Lime-fly ash specimens were cured at constant temperature and subjected to X-ray diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, pozzolanic reactivity tests, and microscopical investigations. Bars of limefly ash were subjected to cycles of wetting and drying, and measurements of length change were recorded. A discussion of variations within and among types of lime and types of fly ash is presented. The nature of the pozzolanic reaction is reviewed, particularly as related to compounds which are used up and formed during the aging process. The relationship between the pozzolanic reaction and the resultant physical properties of the mixtures is examined.

The Quaternary stream sediments of the Diit area, southern Red Sea coast, Egypt, were mineralogically studied for their content of economic heavy minerals. The study area covered approximately 450 km2 and included three main parts: Wadi and Delta Diit, as well as Diit lens. The mineralogical investigation revealed that these sediments contain considerable amounts of placer ilmenite, magnetite, zircon, sphene, apatite, garnet, and rutile. Also present, in minor or trace amounts, are uranothorite, monazite, xenotime, fergusonite, khatyrkite, and gold. The magnetic fractionation tests, supplemented with the XRD and SEM mineral analyses, indicated the presence of Fe-oxide minerals as wuestite, hematite, and maghemite accompanied with magnetite as products for hand magnet separation. Ilmenite separation was carried out using a high intensity magnetic separator at a current of 1 A, while the paramagnetic minerals (e.g., garnet, pyroxene, amphibole, epidote, monazite, xenotime, and fergusonite) were separated as magnetic fraction at a current of 3 A. The non-magnetic minerals (e.g., zircon, apatite and rutile, uranophane, uranothorite, gold, and khatyrkite) were obtained at 3 A current. On a mineralogical and geochemical basis, the present work suggests that Diit stream sediments should be considered as a potential source for Ti, Fe, Zr, Zn, and Cu after the physical upgrading processes for concentrating the minerals carrying the aforementioned economic elements.

Mining on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) administered lands is affected by Federal laws and regulations requiring the mining industry to plan for the environmental consequences of surface disturbance. Regardless of the requirements for obtaining a claim, permit, lease or contract to mine, a notice or a mining and reclamation plan will be submitted and an acceptable environmental document must be prepared prior to mining. A bond may be required based on the results of the environmental evaluation, public interest and the operator's past history of compliance. In several areas, Federal requirements are different from California's requirements under their Surface Mine and Reclamation Act (SMARA). Therefore, the BLM is negotiating with the State in order to work out problem areas of responsibility and duplication of effort.

Research in the field of mining safety and health in the United States plays an important part in protecting the lives of miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program conducts surveillance, studies and developmental work aimed at improving the safety and health of miners. With recent reviews of the Mining Program by the National Academy of Sciences and the Mining Program response (NIOSH, 2008), the importance of setting goals, conducting high quality engineering and scientific research and evaluating the outputs, outcomes, relevance and impacts of these projects has been reemphasized. Surveillance of reported injuries is a first step in deciding on research directions and in designing specific projects. Groups of injuries often share features and attributes that suggest common causes and may respond to similar preventive efforts. Identifying groups of injuries also serves to prioritize intervention efforts. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Accident and Injury database (MSHA, 2008) provides individual case reports of mining injuries, illnesses and certain no-injury accidents (events such as roof falls that stop mine production or miners’ activities for more than one hour). This database is an indispensable resource for researchers and stakeholders needing information on the statistics of these events. From an epidemiological perspective, research projects target groups of miners at risk due to specific patterns of work, equipment, mine settings and the management of safety and health in their mines. Incidence rates are provided by the MSHA data for selected variables, such as surface/underground location, standard industrial classification and state. While incidence rates are the preferred measure for all variables, denominators are not typically available; for example, to more clearly understand the data about injury by occupational type, it would be necessary to conduct demographic surveys. A current survey of the demographics of the mining industry should be complete by 2010, which will allow incidence rates to be developed for a number of variables such as age, occupation and experience. This survey will provide the first update of its kind since the first survey was conducted in 1985. This report describes an alternative method of analyzing and presenting MSHA data for the purpose of identifying high-cost, high-severity injuries and illnesses. Researchers at the NIOSH Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) developed programs to find the top five most frequent accident classes, natures of injury, types of accidents and other selected variables from the MSHA database. Studying these variables gives a cross-sectional snapshot of the most frequent groups of injuries within a commodity, regional group or time period, and allows researchers to quickly understand developing patterns for new research projects. On July 13, 1967 the San Bernardino County Planning Commission approved publicly a request by American Smelting and Refining Company for a zone variance to conduct a silver mining and milling operation in the Calico district, southern California, Coincidentally, on July 14 the U.S. Treasury halted its sales of silver, and the U.S. free market price quoted rose immediately from $1.30 to $1.77 per ounce. In its request to the commission Asarco stated that about 13,500 to 15,000 tons of rock would be moved daily by surface mining, including 7,000 tons of ore. The ore would be crushed to minus three-quarters inches and the silver recovered "by a chemical process." The grade of the ore was not given, but the company said that it might also recover barite as a byproduct, The operation would employ 150-160 people. Additional activity in the district includes exploration programs by Superior Oil Company and Calico Silver Mines, Ltd. History and production: In retrospect, as the price of silver began to rise in 1961 from 91 cents an ounce, and as Asarco began its exploration program in late 1964, a new era for an old bonanza silver district would seem to have begun. The Calico district has been mined for silver only on a very, very small scale since 1882 to 1896, when an estimated $12 to $20 million (perhaps 15 to 20 million troy ounces) of that metal was produced from the 50-odd mines of the district and vicinity. These mines include the Silver King, Oriental, Waterloo, Garfield, Odessa and Waterman (which is about 8 miles west of the district). Much smaller-valued amounts of barite, gold, lead, and copper also have been produced from the ore deposits of the district; and from 1884 to 1907 the region yielded about $9 million worth of borate minerals.

"The field demonstration portion of the Underground Grouting and Ground Improvement (UG&GI) short course offered by the Colorado School of Mines was held on May 18, 2016 at Baski Inc.’s Yard in Denver, CO.Numerous full field scale demonstrations of grouting methods and equipment were conducted under various field conditions. As part of these field tests, permeation grouting testing and demonstrations were also conducted. Various cement grout mixes were injected into 1.5-m (60-in.) tall transparent sand columns under controlled conditions (Fig. 1). The objective of the sand column permeation grouting demonstrations in the study was to show students the effects of ordinary Portland cement versus ultrafine cement on the engineering properties of the grout, and the permeation height through various types of soil stratigraphic layers in the sand columns. Similar previous demonstrations have had a specific focus on various brands of Type I-II Portland cements and ultrafine cements with a range of water cement ratios and injection pressures. More detailed information about these previous studies can be found in published proceedings (e.g. Henn et al., 2009 -2011).Equipment and material usedThe five clear plastic sand columns were 191 mm (7.5 in.) inside diameter and 1,524 mm (60 in.) tall. Each sand column had a 19 mm (0.75 in.) diameter hole drilled at the base (bottom) of the blind flange for injection of the grout. A perforated plate and/or screen at the base of the sand columns helped to prevent sand from plugging injection port. A ChemGrout grout plant was used for the demonstration consisting of 0.36 m3 (97 gal) high shear (colloidal) tank mixer, a 0.36 m3 (97 gal) agitator tank and a progressive helical cavity pump with maximum output capacity of 77 L/min (20 gpm) at a maximum discharge pressure of 265 psi (18 bar) (Fig. 2). A simple grout header arrangement consisting of control valves, pressure gauges, flow meter, grout delivery and return line, and a short injection line was also custom built. Also used were infra-red thermometers to measure the temperatures of the grout mix batches, CRD and marsh funnels to measure viscosity, baroid mud balance to measure specific gravity, and a digital scale to measure weights. The grout materials used were Holkim Portand cement (Type I-II), Nippon Steel Sumikin superfine cement and U.S. grout ultrafine cement."

In situ mining is now considered an alternative mining method for some ore bodies. The in situ operation consists of a well field designed from reservoir properties and geological information; the wells for such a field are then drilled, cased, and cemented, using good designs and practices to eliminate future problems. Injection and production (recovery) systems are required to be corrosion resistant. Hand in hand with the mining operation is the metal extraction plant, the entire operation offering an environmentally acceptable method for metal recovery. Great opportunity exists in this field for mineral engineers; presently, they must borrow knowledge from other fields, since the schools have not yet addressed this specialty.

Paste tailings disposal was successfully implemented at the New Jersey mill in Kellogg, ID with two different types of ore feed, a gold ore and a silver ore. The purpose of this paper is to describe the production of paste tailings, including operational problems during commissioning, and also highlight the environmental and economic benefits that were realized versus conventional tailings disposal such as the recycling of process water, increased shear strength and reduced permeability of the tailings mass, and reduced environmental permitting.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines is developing a process to selectively extract manganese from oxide ores as part of its in situ leach mining research program. The Bureau is conducting site characterization studies of two manganiferous iron-formation deposits which include: drill core, regional stratigraphic relationships from the existing geologic database, ore body geometry, geologic structure, hydrologic conditions, proximity of ore minerals to the leach fluid paths, surface subsidence potential, and data collected from laboratory leaching experiments. This information is being used to evaluate the technical, environmental, and economic feasibility of in situ leach mining of manganese for these two deposits. This paper will focus on the stratigraphy, mineralogy, ore textures, fractures, permeability, and porosity as they relate to in situ leach mining.

The N20 to N25 Tunnel (basic) segment was the second tunnel contract awarded for construction by The PB/MK Team. This project embodied 3.9 km (2.4 miles) of tunnel and was located within the northwest quadrant of the 86.9 km (54 mile) long main collider ring. The contract required the excavation and initial support of a 54.3 m (178 vlf) deep ventilation shaft, a connecting horseshoe shaped Adit and TBM starter tunnel and 3,865 m (12,680 If) long main collider tunnel with a 4.3 m (14 ft) minimum finished diameter. This paper discusses the construction methods, equipment utilized and the production achieved in the construction of the ventilation shaft, connecting adits and the main collider tunnel.
