Non-renewable mineral raw materials are grouped into three categories to investigate ways leading to sustainable use of natural resources: 1.) metallic resources, 2.) non-metallic resources with the exception of the fertilizer minerals, and 3) the fertilizer minerals for the nutrients nitrogen (N), potassium (K), and phosphorous (P). With the exception of minerals in Group 3 which are essential for plant growth, mankind does not need raw materials as such, only the intrinsic property of a material that fulfils a useful function. This is especially true for non-metallic materials. Metallic resources have the best chance to become renewable if one makes optimal use of the resources of the man-made technosphere. For the fertilizer elements K and N there does not exist a problem, because sea water or air respectively provide an inexhaustible source for them. This does not apply to P however. So P is serving as one of our apposite case studies for solving sustainability challenges. For all the challenges along the road from a non-sustainable to a sustainable resource economy technology can be envisioned to come to the rescue provided conditions that are considered to be essential for sustainable use for all natural resources-- affordable renewable energy and human ingenuity to find new solutions for functions, to optimize processes and to minimize losses-- are satisfied.

Large language models (LLMs) have generated a lot of hype since ChatGPT was released in early 2023. In essence, they allow people to interact with computer systems through natural language and have the ability to generate highly complex text, images and videos (Patil and Gudivada, 2024). It is clear that this technology has significant potential, however most mining companies have not yet found practical applications for it within their operations. In this paper, we present a range of such applications along with the tactical considerations associated with developing and implementing them. We have identified use cases across a variety of operational and functional areas within the mining industry and evaluated them based on their potential business value and ease of implementation. Firstly, we provide an overview of how LLMs work and a review of how LLMs are being applied in other industries to provide best practice inspiration for mining. Next, we present a list of possible applications in mining and a critical assessment of each use case. This section also includes a technical deep dive into the different methodologies for developing the technologies as well as an analysis of barriers to adoption within mining organizations. Finally, we share a discussion of the potential path forward for LLMs in mining and the impact they could have on the industry. We analyze the potential differences between early adopters and laggards in the artificial intelligence (AI) space. This research draws on interviews and surveys with artificial intelligence experts as well as mining subject matter experts to connect cutting edge thought leadership with the specific problems faced by our industry.

In February of 1989 the Mission Complex of ASARCO Incorporated completed an expansion of its concentrator, raising the base mining rate from 25,900 TPO (28,500 STPD) to 37,200 TPO (41,000 STPD). The expansion was accomplished by extending the twelve existing Mission ball mills in length, by installing the grinding circuit from Asarco's idled Sacaton Concentrator along with various auxiliary equipment, and by modifications to the flotation circuit and water systems. This paper will give a brief history of the consolidation of the ore body which made the expansion possible and explain the various parts of the expansion.

The existence of resins in some coal deposits in various parts of the world has been known for many years. These resins vary considerably in chemical structure and properties. The resin that is found in Utah coal, however, is rather unique, and has properties particularly attractive for the manufacture of printing ink mastics and adhesives. This resin is a rather dark, very high melting point, low molecular weight hydrocarbon resin. Its typical properties are shown in Table I. Its largest use by far, has been in the printing ink industry. The history of Utah coal resin is interesting, but unfortunately one of disappointment and failure.

This paper will deal with some of the considerations which, were involved in the design and construction of the uranium mills in the Elliot Lake area . These plants, eleven in number, range from 1500 to 6500 tons per day milling capacity. Most references are with respect to the seven plants in the Rio Tinto Group which have a combined milling capacity in excess of 20,000 tons per day. In dealing with such abroad subject as mill design, one has the choice, of covering a few specific problems in great detail, or else attempting to cover many subjects superficially and briefly. In preparing this presentation, an attempt has been made to compromise on these extremes, and to select some interesting illustrations which are of general interest in the field of mill design, and of value to persons concerned with mill design broadly, beyond the field of uranium mills.

"Tell us how you got involved in mining?I was first exposed to mining at a young age, as a consequence of my dad and his passion for the industry and rock collecting. Even though he graduated with a degree in mining engineering from Washington State University, my dad spent most of his career working as a structural engineer for the Boeing Company. At the time, Boeing supported a range of employee activities and clubs, including one devoted to mineral prospecting, small-scale dredging and rock hounding. My dad was extremely active in the Prospectors Club, where as a family, we spent a good part of my youth tramping around the Pacific Northwest digging for mineral specimens and panning for gemstones and gold. On my mother’s side of the family, I had relatives that mined in Dawson City and Fairbanks, AK which left a family legacy of sorts. I loved the stories that my dad and a close buddy of his, who was a geologist, would tell about various operations and towns, as well as the wild times at the annual Northwest Mining Association (NWMA) meeting in Spokane, WA. My first recollection of ever being at a commercial operation was during a tour of the Bunker Hill Mine with my dad when I was 7 or 8 years old; this had to have been shortly before the May 1972 fire at Sunshine. That visit of the mine and processing facilities made a permanent impression on me. While I always knew there was something special about the Silver Valley, I began to understand why. To this day, I still get the same feeling when I visit historic mining districts like Leadville, Morenci, Virginia City, Butte, Silverton and Barkerville. During our summer excursions to Helena, MT to dig sapphires, we would usually make visits to Butte and watch mine operations inside the Berkley Pit and surface activities at the Kelly and Mountain Con. In high school, I did well in math and science and began entertaining thoughts of pursuing a degree in engineering. Above all, I wanted to go to a college in the West that had a good academic reputation, where I could also play football. As a 6-ft, 190-lb nose guard, my options for a Division I scholarship were pretty slim, and there weren’t that many technical schools in the Northwest that were Division II that offered athletic scholarships. As fate would have it, I was unexpectedly contacted by Marv Kay, a legendary coach at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM), and was recruited to play ball. Fortunately, I had a couple of high school friends who were already attending CSM, and I had just secured a summer internship with Asamera Minerals in Wenatchee, WA. It was as if all the stars had aligned, and, with the support of my parents, I made the decision to attend Mines. Despite the stress of getting through CSM during a period when the mining industry was in freefall, it was a great decision to attend Mines, and I’m thankful for all the opportunities, friendships, and faculty mentoring I received as a student"

Canada has been a producer of sulphur in various forms for about 100 years, Pyrites, as a source of sulphur dioxide for the manufacture of sulphuric acid, were being mined in the 1860's. Smelter gas, for the same purpose, has been recovered since 1928. Between 1935 and 1943, and from 1952 to the present, elemental sulphur has been produced in Canada from two raw material sources and by several methods. This paper attempts to present a view of the current status of the elemental sulphur industry in Canada based on the sour gas fields of Alberta and British Columbia. Production from this source has increased rapidly in the past 12 years to make Canada one of the major sulphur producers of the world. The present industry in Canada relies mainly on sour gas sulphur and it is expected that it will continue to grow in the future. However, before describing current activity relating to sour gas it may be of interest to outline briefly the early pyrite activities, the roots of the sulphur industry in Canada.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the former U.S. Bureau ofMines (USBM) have given a significant effort over the past four decades in researching and developing engineering controls and interventions to reduce mine workers’ dust exposures during the bagging and palletizing of industrial minerals. Workers performing manual bagging and palletizing of 50- to 100-pound bags typically have some of the highest dust exposures of all workers at mining and mineral processing operations. This paper will provide an overview of available dust control technologies for bagging operations and present the findings of a recent case study that was conducted at four different industrial sand operations to identify the current types of bagging and palletizing technologies being used and to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing workers’ exposures to respirable crystalline silica dust. An evaluation will also be performed to determine if further reductions in respirable dust levels can be achieved by incorporating additional modifications or improvements into the existing technology.

For the mining industry in general and gold mining in particular the past few years have been difficult. Economic conditions coupled with growing regulatory restrictions have led to increasingly important reasons for managing assets wisely. From a public company perspective this makes sense because it ultimately provides for an increase in shareholder wealth and that's what we're in business to do. Regardless of whether a company is public or not, assets must be managed effectively to remain a player in today's competitive environment. So, as the CEO of a gold mining company, how do we manage our assets to ensure that we are satisfying our obligations to our customer --the Amax: Gold shareholder? Let me tell you. As I said earlier, the gold industry has been under siege. We have just completed our third year of average prices below $400 per ounce. When you add finding and/ or acquisition costs and development costs to operating costs, there isn't much of a profit margin left. What this environment provides, however, is opportunities for growth. In the gold business, you either grow or you die. Today, most North American gold producers have at most a 10 year mine life. We are all scrambling to add reserves so we don't become extinct. As prices remain low, opportunities for increasing diminishing reserves abound. This is the time for the opportunistic company to take advantages of market conditions and that's precisely what we, at Amax: Gold, have done!

In the event of a sudden nuclear attack upon the United States, it is imperative that vital command and control centers have a high probability of survival. One such vital facility is the North American Air Defense Command Combat Operations Center at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Known briefly as NOW, this installation when completed will be housed in large chambers excavated out of granite beneath the eastern slope of Cheyenne Mountain (Figure 1). The NORAD COC, a U. S. Air Force sponsored project, will serve as the primary collection and evaluation center for data concerning unknown aircraft, missiles, or space vehicles, which might bring destruction to North America. The data will be fed into high-speed computers and electronic equipment from outpost sources - radar, ballistic missile early warning stations and picket ships throughout the world. Electronically controlled display boards will make it possible to evaluate the tracking data instantaneously and to take appropriate defensive action1.

Most statistical measures of mineral exploration continued downward in 1986. Prospects in 1987, however, appear to have brightened for exploration as the overall economic health of the mineral industry improved. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) survey of US and Canadian firms documents the marked decline in US mineral exploration since the early 1980's. From 1981 through 1986, the total exploration expenditure by US firms declined by more than 73% (Fig. 1). Exploration expenditures by US firms declined by 66%%. US based professional exploration staffs were slashed by 70% (Fig. 2). Also, many firms have written off some reserves because of weak markets or have not delineated new reserves to replace production. The Canadian government reported that between 1981 and 1986 Canadian molybdenum re¬serves had declined by 30%, lead and zinc reserves by 20%, and nickel and copper reserves by 15%. The SEG survey also shows the immediate impact of the decline in the dollar on US exploration expenditures abroad. Between 1981 and 1986 the share of the exploration dollar spent by US firms outside of the country declined by nearly one-half and exploration acreage abroad declined by 69%. The downward trend of the last six years may finally be near the end as a leaner and more efficient minerals industry starts to gear up for a period of increased activity. An industry survey reported to Mine Development Bimonthly (Metals Economics Group) indicates that mining firms were expected to increase exploration expenditures in 1987 by at least 10% above 1986 levels. Worldwide expenditures for 1987 by companies covered by the report were expected to top $800 million. It is the first time since 1984 that an increase in exploration expenditures was expected. Also, the US Bureau of Land Management reported a 30% increase in new mining claims for fiscal year 1987 over fiscal year 1986. The bulk of the increase in claims was in states having intense gold exploration, particularly Washington and Oregon. Much of the optimism is undoubtedly due to the increases in metal prices that occurred in 1987. Some of these increases include gold, average price up about 20%; copper, average price up 24%; aluminum, average price up 26%; and nickel, average spot price up 20%. The SEG survey shows precious and base metals accounting for 89% of the exploration expenditures in the US in 1986, up 52% from 1981. The US Bureau of Mines estimates that 80% of US exploration activity in 1986 was directed entirely at gold (1986 Minerals Yearbook). Worldwide exploration plans indicate the continued dominance of gold exploration. New programs were announced for Ghana, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Major new exploration programs were also launched for lead-zinc sulfides in Morocco, platinum and palladium in northwest Brazil, rare earth minerals in Greenland, diamonds in Indonesia, and heavy minerals off-shore Australia. The gangue in some magnetite ore bodies contains feldspar; the alkali content of the feldspar reduces the usefulness of these iron ores. One method of decreasing the feldspar content in magnetite concentrate is froth flotation. The amine flotation of feldspar from magnetite concentrate was investigated using zeta potential measurements, Hallimond tube flotation tests and laboratory-scale flotation tests. The zeta potential of various feldspars (microcline, albite, anorthite, oliqoclase and anorthoclase) were determined as a function of pH; the point of zero charge ranged from pH 1.4 to 2.5. Hallimond tube flotation tests using two amine reagents were conducted on the feldspars. Hallimond tube flotation tests using six amine flotation reagents were performed on the cobber tails (quartz, albite and microcline) from a magnetite concentrating plant; in all cases, over 85 percent flotation recovery was obtained at pH 8 and 10-5 to 10-4 [M] collector addition. Laboratory-scale (667 grams) flotation tests were performed on the magnetite concentrate in an attempt to float the feldspar which had reported to the concentrate. The effects of three different collectors, two levels of collector concentration, three pH levels, starch and HF acid were investigated.

"GENERAL PROJECT DATA The Sparvo Tunnel belongs to “Variante di Valico” project, a new 65 km highway link between Bologna and Florence, designed to renew the existing A1 route and to connect in a faster way Bologna and Flor-ence. It is composed of a 2,5 km twin tunnel excavated in a complex geological context, characterized by the presence of a series of surface landslides and methane gas. The gradient is 2.6 % and the minimum radius is 1’400 m. The internal diameter of the precast seg-ment lining, equivalent to the final section of the tunnel, is 13.6 m. MAIN TBM SPECIFICATIONS TBM Earth Pressure Balanced S-574 “Martina”, manufactured by Herrenknecht, has a theoretical excava-tion diameter of 15’615 mm. It is equipped with a conical shield 12.2 m long and four back-up gantries. The total length of the machine is approximately 130 m, weighing approximately 4’500 tons. The total installed power is 16’800 kW. The main drive has a diameter of 8’700 mm and has a triple axis roller type bearing equipped with a labyrinth system including 4 sealing lips. TIME SCHEDULE OF INITIAL TBM DRIVE A time schedule of the initial TBM drive is presented in the following list: •,August 25, 2011: start of the excavation of the 1st drive of the Sparvo tunnel •,October 29,2011: stop of the advance of the TBM for gear oil contamination and clogging •,October 29 to December 20, 2011: repair works on the main drive system and modifications on the conditioning system •,December 20,2011 to July 25, 2012: restart excavation of the 1st drive (north tunnel) and its breakthrough •,July 25 to November 29, 2012: 180° turning of the TBM, detailed check of the main drive seal-ing system and fixing problems on gear boxes, race ring, clamping ring and cutting wheel •,November 29,2012 to July 24, 2013: excavation of the 2nd drive (south tunnel) and its break-through •,August 2013 to July 31, 2014: disassembly of the TBM (first 4 months) and standstill of the jobsite for structural issues on precast concrete lining of the tunnel •,July 31, 2014 to March 10, 2015: inspection, dismantling and packaging of each part of the main drive (flange ring, gear box housing and main bearing). When one's attention moves from the control of a process unit or from the control of a department of similar units, to the control of an entire plant, two things must change. One is the techniques of control, and the other, the goal or purpose of control. The goal is no longer maintaining a certain quality of product or maintaining a particular flow rate through a process unit. The goal becomes economic - how to make the most money out of the plant. The principal control techniques become those of optimizing, rather than regulating. It is quite common to discuss the control of an entire plant in terms of three levels of control l; regulation, supervision, and optimization. Regulation is the control of inputs to a process unit at desired values. This is accomplished by two or three mode analog controllers or DDC loops. The second level of control is the selection of these desired values, e.g., set-points of the regulation controllers. The third level is to make such adjustments or corrections to the supervisory calculations so as to optimize the plant profit. It is immediately evident that supervisory control and optimizing control are intimately related, and a distinct dividing line cannot always be drawn between the two. Some authors prefer to add even more levels such as adaptive control and management information systems, but we believe our point is well made without further division of the functions which are necessary for complete plant control. To accomplish the economic goal, that is, the optimizing (maximizing) of the profit of a mineral processing plant, the plant should ideally be operated as if it were a separate company, buying its raw materials on the open market and selling its products on the open market. While petrochemical plants endeavor to operate in that manner, unfortunately this is not true of a mineral processing plant. The plant manager has to accept the amount and quality of ore the mining department delivers to him, and the products (concentrates) are delivered to another department of the company for further refining. Tunnel approach structures situated in slow moving earth flows are subjected to significant earth pressures. The authors have developed a system, utilizing collapsible concrete columns, that limits such loading. The system uses an array of collapsible concrete columns in front of the structure to absorb downslope movement and limit-imposed loads. This concept has been modelled using 3D FEM analyses and a rudimental lab test. For implementation, the collapsible columns would be prefabricated in strengths to mimic the soil strength profile. This concept has merit, and analytical results demonstrate that collapsible columns are a viable means to limit loading.

This system represents the latest thinking in slurry pipeline design and is one of the main contributors to the viability of the SAMARCO Project. This paper presents the background, description and latest information on the system's operation. Special attention is given to the handling limitations of the slurry and to the unique hardware requirements.

The studies described in this paper have established that flotation conducted in a column cell provided with gas generation by aspiration into surface tension lowered water, may considerably increase the efficiency and particle size range of a flotation process. Operation of a DEISTER FLOTAIRE ® Cell at several Southwest United States flotation plants under continuous rougher, scavenger and cleaner conditions has demonstrated the main positive features to be: (a) higher capacity per unit volume than conventional flotation equipment, (b) improvement of flotation of plus 0.210 m particles, (c) improved flotation of particles minus 0.037 m.

The Monsanto Company's Henry Mine is located 17 miles northeast of Soda Springs, in the southeast corner of Idaho. Ore being mined is phosphate rock which lies in the Permian Phosphoria formation. The ore is the raw material for Monsanto's three furnace elemental "P" plant near Soda Springs. The finished product from the furnaces is elemental phosphorus which is subsequently used in the manufacture of detergents, food preservatives, fire retardants and other consumer items. Mining is by open pit methods using 0-9 crawler tractors to rip and push-load rubber tired scrapers in stripping and mining operations. The equipment spread consists of six D-9G crawler tractors, four Caterpillar 6578 scrapers, eight Euclid S-24 scrapers, one Reich T750 drill and one Caterpillar No. 16 patrol plus various support equipment. Stripping is performed on a 12-month basis, two shifts per day. Mining is performed mainly in the summer months on a one shift basis. The hauling season begins May 15 and ends November 1 due to freezing weather and snow conditions. Annual production is 1,000,000 tons of phosphate rock and 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 yards of stripping. Stripping, mining and hauling is performed for Monsanto by Dravo-Soda Springs, a mining contractor. Dravo-Soda Springs owns, operates and maintains all equipment used in stripping, mining and hauling. The contractor is paid for stripping by the bank yard and for ore mined and hauled on a tonnage basis. The Monsanto elemental phosphorus plant began production in 1952 with ore being trucked to the plant from the Ballard Mine. Haulage was over public roads in 15, 24-ton semitrucks. A private haul road was constructed from the Ballard Mine to the Monsanto Plant in 1958 and 1959 to accommodate trucks with two twenty-yard trailers. This 11/ mile road was first used in the 1959 hauling season. In 1965, five new Kenworth tractors with two, 'forty yard trailers were introduced into the haulage system.
