The MineTracer System developed by a Liberty Lake Washington company is a broad capability wireless sensor network based on a new breed of technologies known as wireless mesh systems. In this paper, R&D Manager Jim Barrett summarizes the balance of engineering tradeoffs that result in a system that (1) performs well, (2) is survivable against many types of mine accidents, (3) operates for many hours post-accident on battery power, (4) meets stringent MSHA requirements for intrinsic safety, and (5) is economically affordable for the mines.

Throughout Mexican history, mining has been an important, traditional activity. Before the "Discovery of America," native miners worked a variety of deposits throughout the country, including Mixtec gold and gem mines in Oaxaca State and Aztec gold, silver and copper from mines in Michoacán. The 500th anniversary of Mining in Mexico after the "Discovery of America" was initiated by the Mexican mining sector on April 15, 1991. As early as 1548, when the Guanajuato mining district was discovered, Mexico had become a leading world producer of precious metals. Since then, Mexican mineral production has developed in cycles, responding to changing technological, economic and political conditions. During the 20th century, Mexican mine output reached its peak in the decades of the 1930s and 1940s, when it was producing about 40% of the world's silver, 15% of its lead, 10% of its zinc, 4% of its copper and 3.5% of its gold. In 1990, by way of contrast, these percentages of world output stood at 13.5% for silver, 4.7% for lead, 4.1% for zinc, 3.2% for copper, and 0.43% for gold. The lowest production levels were recorded during the 1960s and 1970s, when Mexicanization of the industry and increasing state controls weakened mineral economics to a point that mineral exploration budgets were sharply reduced or eliminated, along with the industry's future. Only the noble old mining districts continued to supply production, with occasional eruptions of "bonanzas" and new extensions in established mining districts.

Ground-engaging tools are used to prevent damage to the main components of earth-moving equipment. These tools consist of everything from shovel teeth to replaceable drill bits to dozer wear plates. The costs of these "consumable" items are increasing with the costs of raw materials. This project developed a tool to be used by Newmont Mining Corp. to predict the consumption of excavator teeth at a particular mine site. This paper presents the results of the Montana Tech research project in which an equation was developed to predict excavator teeth consumption based on production rates and rock properties.

Outburst of gas, coal and rock can be defined as sudden release of coal and rock accompanied by large quantities of gas into the working face or other mine workings. The outburst events appeared rarely in some metal mines has generally occurred in salt and coal mines especially bituminous coal mining. The most important factors that influence the occurrence of outbursts are gassiness of the coal seam, tectonics, properties of the coal and rock and vertical and lateral stresses occurring in the seam and or rock or part of the coal seam. This paper describes the problem of gas and coal outbursts in underground coal mines. The outburst events occurred in Zonguldak Coal Basin located on the Black Sea coast was investigated since 1969. Geological and gas conditions of Zonguldak Coal Basin are described. The incidents are analyzed statistically with the criteria such as amount of coal and gas outburst, depth of workings, effect of tectonism, thickness and inclination of coal seams.

In its 2001 diesel particulate matter (DPM) rule for metal and nonmetal underground mines, MSHA established an interim concentration limit of 400 micrograms of total carbon (TC) per cubic meter of air (400TCµg/m3), and a final concentration limit of 160TCµg/m3, to be phased in over five years. Following a court challenge to the 2001 rule, MSHA, industry and organized labor reached a partial settlement of the litigation under which the agency agreed to issue a proposal to amend the 2001 rule by, among other things, changing the surrogate from TC to elemental carbon (EC), applying MSHA's traditional hierarchy of controls, and revising requirements for one-year special extensions for complying with the final DPM exposure limit. MSHA issued a final rule in 2005 converting the interim concentration limit from 400TCµg/m3 to 308 micrograms of EC per cubic meter of air (308ECµg/m3) based on a miner?s personal exposure. Pending further rulemaking, MSHA retained the final concentration limit of 160TCµg/m3. In May 2006, MSHA issued a final rule that clarified that the final limit of 160TCµg/m3 would be based on a miner?s personal exposure rather than as a concentration limit. The 2006 rule also phased in the final DPM limit in three steps over two years, beginning in May 2006 at 308ECµg/m3, followed eight months later in January 2007 with a limit of 350TCµg/m3, and finally reaching 160TCµg/m3 in May 2008. Also in the 2006 rule, MSHA committed to converting the 160TCµg/m3 limit to an EC limit in future rulemaking. This paper reviews the DPM exposure limits in the context of the MSHA rulemakings and discusses the DPM engineering controls that were utilized by mine operators to attain compliance with each progressively lower limit.

Lack of understanding of useful applications of explosives on construction work stem primarily from the fact that explosion is commonly associated with destruction. On rock excavation and other construction works a certain quantity of explosive is harnessed to perform useful work at the source e.g. blasts to disintegrate rock. Development in rock blasting techniques, including the use of multiple-row blasting with short delay ignition, have made it impossible to excavate rocks close to or below buildings even in closely built-up areas. To permit the use of explosives on construction projects, in ways that will not damage existing structures, guidelines have been developed from careful measurements of intensity of ground vibrations. Accurate electronic instruments are now available for doing this. PLANNING AND CONTROL Blasting operations must be carefully planned and carried out to avoid discomfort to persons or damage to property. This increase in the use of rock blasting in city areas alone has led to a number of problems due to ground vibrations, air shock waves, and the psychological effect of noise. While the latter seldom if ever causes damage, it does create irritation and discomfort to persons living or working near the blasting sites. A result of this is a steady increase in the number of complaints in respect of damage to houses and other premises. Many such complaints are genuine and damage may undoubtedly be caused when incorrect blasting techniques are used.

The objective of the experiment was to investigate the efficiency of hindered-settling column in recovering carbon from anthracite. Two types of Korean anthracites were prepared for feed materials. Each sample was crushed and classified by size, and washability analyses were performed. Separation efficiency was evaluated under various operating conditions using a laboratory scale hindered settling column. Results showed that the carbon recovery was higher for the smaller sizes, but the purity of the product was better for the larger sizes. In, overall, 2-0.21mm particles of 40-45 % ash could be processed into about 20 % ash products.

All underground operations have limiting factors that influence overall profitability. Hoisting, hauling, available headings, labor, milling capacity and other factors limit how much material can be removed from an underground mine. Consequently, when mines use limited labor to handle the additional rock from overbreak and to perform extra ground support tasks, productive activity is replaced by non-productive work. Mining economics are further penalized when overbreak causes dilution of ore grades. This paper reviews organizational systems that mines have used to create environments which foster the creation of successful overbreak control programs. Actual case histories document the various quality improvement techniques, worker incentives, and practical project management systems used by these mines. A brief review of controlled blasting technology sources and overbreak measurement tools is also included.

Komatsu America has introduced its 2-MW (2,700-hp), 930E-3 ac electric drive truck with a 290-t(320-st) capacity. The truck is designed to provide increased productivity, lower cost per ton hauled and improved speed and control. The 930E-3 is powered by a Komatsu SSDA16Vl6016-cylinder engine. It is capable of speeds up to 65 km/h(40 mph) and is a 15-percent to 20-percent more productive unit than 218-t (240-st) trucks, at a lower operating cost per ton. The 930E-3 also provides enough torque and speed to get up and off ramps easier than mechanically driven trucks. And it can climb at altitudes up to 3,650 m(12,000 ft) without any fuel deration.

Gold Fields acquired an option to purchase the Cerro Corona project, located in Hualgayoc, Cajamarca Department, Peru, in December 2003. In January 2006, the option was taken up and the transaction closed. During the intervening months, project development occurred against the backdrop of a presidential election, increasing national social activism and environmental regulation, rapidly escalating operating and capital costs, as well as an unprecedented demand for engineering and technical skills. Project “Lessons Learned” are discussed in the context of an evolving strategy. The Cerro Corona project forms part of a porphyry copper-gold deposit situated within the Hualgayoc Mining District in northern Peru. It is located in the highest part of the Western Cordillera of the Andes, close to the headwaters of the Atlantic Continental Basin. It lies approximately 90 km (56 miles) by road north of the Department of Cajamarca’s capital city and near the village of Hualgayoc. Access to the Cerro Corona project from Cajamarca is by two roads, one from Cajamarca to the Yanacocha Mine 45 km (28 miles), and then from Yanacocha to the village of Hualgayoc and the town of Bambamarca 45 km (28 miles).

Australia’s Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) has achieved several successes during its first three years of operation. This initiative was developed through the Minerals Council of Australia, in conjunction with three partner universities involved in mining engineering education. The partner universities are the University of New South Wales (UNSW); Curtin University, the West Australian School of Mines (WASM); and the University of Queensland (UQ). The collaboration between these partner universities and industry has led to the development of shared course material, cross-institutional teaching arrangements, and the development of a number of flexible, distance-based delivery programs. This article then discusses future initiatives. Importantly, the challenge is the future initiative planned to cement this collaboration by the formation of a “virtual” national school of mining engineering: Mining Education Australia (MEA). This will provide a common third and fourth year program to all three universities beginning in 2007. The common program will involve innovative teaching and learning arrangements, greater student exchange potential and a more significant input by industry into the education process.

This study provides an effective determination process of the interface microstructural parameters in the numerical modelling of the mechanical interaction between two different geomaterials involved with frictional-bonded interfaces, such as the interaction between backfill columns and the surrounding rocks, or the soil-structure interaction, by using the coupled finite-difference and discrete-element (FD-DE) method. Three-dimensional numerical direct shear tests were conducted on the coupled FD-DE model of the combined rock-cemented rockfill (R-CRF) specimens with the frictional-bonded interface. With the microstructural parameters determined, the macro-mechanical properties of the interface of the coupled model were calibrated to well fit with the theoretical values of the combined specimen under the direct shear condition assumed according to the Mohr–Coulomb strength criterion. Evident elastoplastic shear behaviour was observed on the interfaces, and excellent agreement was attained between the shapes of the theoretical and simulated shear stress-displacement curves of the coupled models at different servo-controlled normal stresses. Particulate-scale force chains inside the DE model of the CRF specimen were highly consistent with the force contour on the FD model of the rock specimen, demonstrating the shear stress evolution of the coupled model at different shear displacements. Parametric studies verified the effects of the deformation properties of the interface parallel bonds on the shape of shear stress-displacement curves of the coupled models. The test results validated the feasibility and rationality of the coupled FD-DE method for modelling the combined specimens with frictional-bonded interfaces or joints. Furthermore, this study provides valuable numerical modelling experience for investigating the shear behaviour at the interface between cemented backfill columns and surrounding walls by using the coupled FD-DE method.

A tower-like magnetic system comprising eight permanent magnets was installed at the center of a flotation column to separate chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite minerals. A cyclonic flotation was installed within the underpart of the column to separate the pyrrhotite from the gangues. A three-product magnetic flotation column was fabricated to create a magnetic field and a cyclonic zone. The products were Cu concentrates, pyrrhotite concentrates and tailings. The theoretical magnetic field strengths and the magnetic forces were calculated. The results of the flotation experiments showed that the Cu grade increased from 14.20% without the magnetic field to 26.40% in the presence of the magnetic field and that the S grade in the pyrrhotite concentrates increased in the presence of cyclonic flotation. The separation efficiency of this magnetic flotation column was evident. Therefore, this three-product magnetic flotation column may have a potential application, due to its high separation efficiency.

Underground construction often requires working within a very congested urban environment, including excavating shafts adjacent to highly sensitive and multistoried structures, sometimes even within such structures. Shafts adjacent to heavily loaded column footings are often required due to space constraints. Invariably, footing surcharges must be considered during the design of shaft rock reinforcement. Rockwedge stability evaluation reveals that column surcharges can greatly impact the ability to meet the desired factor of safety. Design methodologies and examples to deal with these special circumstances are presented.

As development in underground coal mines progresses away from the critical components of the ventilation system, including the main fans and ventilation shafts, resistance is markedly increased. This results in higher pressure and flow requirements from the main fan(s) to maintain adequate face ventilation, which often requires that the primary ventilation system is upgraded with additional shafts and surface fans. The use of booster fans underground is a potentially practical alternative. This study presents simulations of the use of booster fans in two underground ventilation scenarios, one longwall and one room and pillar. The booster fan effects on the power requirements of the ventilation systems are evaluated.

INTRODUCTION The Bunker Hill mine, located at Kellogg, ID, in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, has been a major pro¬ducer of lead-zinc-silver ore since 1887. Since its dis¬covery, it has produced over 25 401 171 t (28 million st) of ore from 20 to 25 veins and ore zones. The mine now covers an area of approximately 1.609 km (1 mile) in length and 0.8 km (1/2 mile) in width and extends from 1097 m (3600 ft) above sea level to 488 m (1600 ft) below sea level. Production is presently at a rate of 1542 t/d (1700 stpd). During 1965, a new stoping method, the Bunker Hill pillar system, was developed to enable the profitable mining of large, low-grade zinc ore bodies. The system was specifically designed to in¬corporate the Atlas Copco T26GH rubber-tired loaders. High productivities were achieved, and the method was adapted for mining the higher grade stopes where large timber square sets are utilized. This results in nearly 100% extraction. GEOLOGY The area encompassing the Bunker Hill mine lies immediately south of the Osburn fault, a major east-west striking, deep-seated strike slip fault which is the dominant structural feature in the Coeur d'Alene district. The Bunker Hill forms a series of veins and mineralized zones which occur as link structures, tension fractures, and breccia zones in folded, interbedded argillaceous quartzites of the Revett and St. Regis formations of the Precambrian belt series. The Rosco ore body is predominantly a zinc ore body above the Cate fault, which is presently known to occur from the 13 level. [elevation 488 m (1600 ft)] to the 1600 level [elevation 304 m (1000 ft) ]. These ore bodies are stringer zones with at least one dominant 1.8 to 4.5 m (6 to 15 ft) wide band of ore. They dip 0.09 to 0.26 rad (5° to 15°) steeper than the local 0.61 rad (35°) dip of the Cate fault, and also deviate 0.26 to 0.52 rad (15° to 30°) in strike from the Cate. Because of the flat dip and fractured weak hanging wall, normal cut-and-fill mining has not proven practical in this ore body. The mechanized timber methods described in the next section and the Bunker Hill pillar system are the mining methods successfully used. Banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) and banded hematite jasper (BHJ) ores represent a promising potential iron ore resource in the near future. The hematite and quartz in BHQ and the hematite and jasper in BHJ are closely related and require fine grinding for the liberation of hematite phases. The present study investigates the mineralogical features and comminution properties of BHQ and BHJ ores. In the BHQ ore, it is observed that thick bands of hematite have fine inclusions of silicate minerals, whereas silica bands have few grains of iron-bearing minerals. The hematite and quartz minerals in the iron and silicate bands of the BHJ ore appear to be more intricately associated and complex in nature, presenting difficulties for liberation. Bond work index studies were carried out for the BHQ and BHJ ores with different product fineness in order to evaluate the energy requirements in fine grinding. A higher Bond work index value was found for the BHJ ore (15.4 kWh/ton) than for the BHQ ore (12.4 kWh/ton). A decrease in the product particle size was associated with an increase in the work index value. Single-particle breakage experiments were designed by varying feed particle size and input energy. The specific energy consumption for the BHJ ore was higher than that for the BHQ ore. The comminution parameters showed that the BHJ ore is harder to grind than the BHQ ore, which may be due to the mineral composition and association of hematite phases with the silicates.

S. Budirsky J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point 0 travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex'85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73-83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4500 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (1a in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the aforementioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf-Forschungshefte, 1984, No. 5, pp. 219-223. The National Mining Hall of Fame will hold its 13thAnnual Induction Banquet during MINExpo International 2000 in Las Vegas, NV. The gala black-tie (optional) event will honor eight legendary leaders of the mining industry. The event will take place at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel on Sunday, Oct. 8. The induction ceremonies will salute mining greats elected by the board of governors from a list of nominees submitted by mining industry partners and the public. The members of the Class of 2000 will join 151 other inductees enshrined in the Mining Hall of Fame in Leadville, CO. The evening will begin at 6 pm with a cash bar reception followed by the banquet and program at 7 pm. Keynoting the banquet program will be Harrison (Jack) Schmitt. He was the geologist/astronaut of the Apollo 17 mission to the moon in 1972 (see related story on page 26). And he is the only scientist to “kick rocks on the moon.” Schmitt is also a member of the Mining Hall’s board of governors. Schmitt was also the keynote speaker at the First Annual Induction Banquet in Denver, CO in 1988.

The theoretical analysis of tumbling mill energetics and performance has largely neglected mill dimensionality, and, in particular, the importance of the length/diameter ratio. This is in spite of the fact that practice varies substantially in this area: geographically, for semi-autogenous and autogenous mills, as between North America and South Africa/Scandinavia; historically, for overflow ball mills, for which the L/D ratio has increased significantly from the earliest small mills to/the largest mills currently. The present study is concerned primarily with the influence of the L/D ratio on the design and operation of overflow ball mills; on the occurrence of the overload phenomenon; and on the limits, if any, it may impose on mill capacities because of critical pulp axial velocity limits. It will be shown that the shape face or is of major importance in this area; and that its adjustment to the extent that this is practical should remove the diameter limitations previously postulated for this mill type.
