This study investigates the enrichment of a low-grade colemanite concentrate (-3 mm) using a Knelson centrifugal gravity concentrator. Due to its low boron content, the concentrate is unsaleable and has to be stored under appropriate conditions to avoid potential environmental problems. The low-grade colemanite concentrate was comminuted to size fractions of-1 mm, -0.5 mm, and -0.15 mm before treatment in the Knelson Concentrator. The effects of particle size, fluidizing water velocity, and bowl speed on the enrichment process were examined. The B2O3content of the concentrate was increased from 33.96% to a maximum of 45.52%. B2O3recovery increased with increasing bowl speed and particle size, and decreased with increasing fluidizing water velocity. The enrichment process also rejected arsenic and iron to some extent, with a maximum reduction of arsenic from 1360 g/t to 765 g/t and iron from 0.88% to0.33%.

The performance of microemulsified diesel and conventional diesel collectors in coal flotation was compared by flotation indicators, including combustible recovery, ash content of the clean coal, and the flotation index. An efficient separation with lower dosage was obtained using the microemulsified diesel collector. Under optimum separation conditions, the microemulsion consumption was 100 g/t less compared with diesel. The saving in diesel consumption using the microemulsion reached about 70%, disregarding the consumption of the surfactant and cosurfactant. Frothing tests showed that the frother dosage was decreased by using the microemulsion collector, because of the surfactant and cosurfactant added during preparation. The microemulsified diesel collector is superior to the conventional diesel collector in terms of diesel consumption and separation efficiency, but the selectivity requires further improvement. KCM made a major modification to the Nchanga Tailings Leach Plant (TLP) changing the circuit from feeding post leach thickeners in parallel with leach discharge for solid ?liquid separation to a Counter Current Decantation (CCD) configuration utilising most of the existing equipment. The new circuit is aimed at improving copper recovery from approximately 70% to 79% through enhanced wash efficiency. The re-introduction of CCD circuit at elevated throughput of 46 000-tpd design was made possible due to the EIMCO E-Duc technology design which is an auto-dilution system that enhances solids settling rate. Commissioning (manual operation) which accommodated on-going operational requirements was phased and completed in January 2004. The circuit stabilised in subsequent months and in March alone an all time record copper recovery of 81.8% was achieved which contributed an extra 779 tonnes copper above the plant?s projected production plans. 100% of the project cost was paid back by end of April 2004 This paper discusses the work involved and the challenges faced during the re-commission

During an intense and accurate study of initiation systems used on an AngloGold mine, Mine A, poor drilling practices were revealed. Graphic results of all actual measurements taken are shown below. [ ] Accurate drilling of shot holes will determine whether a mining operation is payable or not and at what pay limit mining can take place. Losing 30 cm of a potential 120 cm-hole length will result in a number of consequences, i.e.: ?Higher stoping costs ?Drilling of one shot hole twice in every five shifts ?Increased explosive cost as a result ?Excess stress on hangingwall and footwall due to bad face shape ?Excessive blast damage before the area is worked out. No wonder we have such a high-risk operation. Drilling accuracy is crucial to the profitability on any mine as profits are directly related to the quality and utilization of the drilled shot holes.

A physical modelling study has been carried out to simulate the slag-metal dispersion induced by a high-strength bottom gas injection. Water and kerosene were utilized to simulate metal and slag respectively. A water model of CLU (Creusot-Loire Uddeholm)vessel was used with three different nozzle orientations, namely, off-centre, triangular off-centre and centre. The gas flow rates changed from 0.00599 m3/s to 0.01081 m3/s. Height of heavy and light phases was kept fixed at 0.23 m and 0.02 m respectively. The dispersed phase hold-up was determined at various axial and radial distances, gas flow rates, and tuyere configurations. The observations revealed that at a fixed gas injection rate, as the vertical distance increased in the centerline, straight off-centre orientation resulted in greater dispersed phase hold-up values than those of the centre configuration and the triangular off-centre orientation. The dispersed phase hold-up was found to increase with gas injection rate and decreased with axial distance. The variation of the dispersed phase hold-up with the dimensionless axial distance and the gas injection rate was correlated by using the modified Froude number. The experimental values of the dispersed phase hold-up were found to be in reasonable agreement with the correlated values obtained from the modelling equations. The findings of the present study may be utilized in the ferroalloy refining vessels in terms of designing tuyere locations for optimum processing conditions.

"Pumpable emulsion explosives have been available to surface and underground massive mining operations for decades, and their unique properties offer significant advantages in terms of improved safety, reliability, and performance. However, the benefits of pumpable emulsions have been unavailable to narrow-reef mining operations due to the lack of technology necessary for their successful implementation in this challenging environment. Despite efforts to promote and enhance the safety and performance of bulk emulsions for narrow-reef stoping, little research has been undertaken to advance the pump technologies required for their implementation. This has resulted in a gap in knowledge and technology, and as a consequence the successful implementation of a pumpable emulsion system has consistently eluded the narrow-reef environment.The purpose of the following investigation was to evaluate the viability of pumpable emulsion explosives for use in South African narrow-reef mining operations. By approaching the problem from multiple perspectives, this research aimed firstly to propose a theoretical framework and suite of equipment suitable for the implementation of pumpable emulsions within the narrow-reef environment. Through the development of this suite of pumpable emulsion technology, tests could be undertaken on the proposed narrow-reef emulsion formulation and pumpable emulsion technology to obtain the necessary understanding of the performance of the system under controlled operating conditions prior to its implementation in the broader mining industry."

A scraper-based block cave method has been successfully applied to extract the Lower orebody at Nchanga since the 1950s. Since inception, scraper drifts and service ways have been supported using steel arch sets fabricated to a specific design from high strength manganese steel To reduce costs and to improve productivity, trials commenced in 2002 using fibre reinforced shotcrete as an alternative support method. One of the areas, the 2420 8E 1C trial drift, was subjected to abutment loading for several months prior to undercutting and cave mining. Shotcrete installed exhibited minor cracking shortly after application but very little deterioration thereafter. Following the success of the trial, the application of fibre-reinforced shotcrete was extended to other drifts. This paper describes the application of fibre-reinforced shotcreteat Nchanga and outlines design and quality assurance methods employed.

The earliest authenticated scientific report of the occurrence of platinum in rocks from the Bushveld Complex appears to be by William Bettel on 10 November 1906. Thereafter, prospecting of the chromite-rich rocks for platinum proved frustrating. I suggest that the resurgence of interest shown by Dr Hans Merensky in 1924 resulted from his realization that newly panned platinum had a different grain size from that in the chromite layers and indicated a different source rock, which he located, and it became known as the Merensky Reef.

Keywords: co-generation, furnace CO-gas cleaning, disintegrator scrubber, Theisen In a closed, electric, reduction furnace, no oxygen enters the furnace from the surrounding environment. The off-gases are thus not ?burnt? and therefore contain a considerable amount of CO and H2. Traditionally these gases have been captured and burnt in a flare stack. Recent developments have led operators of such furnaces to revise this strategy and to consider utilising these gases as a fuel for gas-fired generator sets to produce electricity, thus becoming more energy efficient. On 31 March 2010 the new emission standards, in accordance with the Air Quality Act, Act 39 of 2004, were promulgated. The minimum emission standards according to the act require that the particulate matter emissions from the primary fume-capture systems on closed furnaces for ?new plants? in ferroalloy and calcium carbide production not exceed 50 mg/Nm³ and 25 mg/Nm³, respectively. By implementing co-generation, the producer automatically complies with the new environmental emission standards for an off-gas. As much as 30% of the electrical power cost, which is set to double in the near future, can be saved by partly generating one?s own electrical power. In December 2010, the National Treasury published a discussion paper for public comment, one entitled ?Reducing greenhouse gas emissions: The carbon tax option?. Irrespective of how the tax is finally implemented, it will result in an increase of production costs in affected industries. This paper focuses on the characteristics of a furnace-off-gas cleaning system for closed ferroalloy smelters, characteristics that meet the requirements of both reducing solid-matter emissions and operating a safe and reliable gas plant.

LHD (load haul dumper) is now used as a loading machine for intermediate mechanization in underground coal mining. For survival in the intense competition in the global business environment in recent years it is essential that LHD machine should be reliable and maintained effectively and efficiently. This paper seeks to study the reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM)of an LHD machine with failure and repair data by Markov modelling. The constraints and reasons for machine unavailability are outlined. The reliability and maintainability of an LHD and its subsystems are evaluated. Possible modification or design alternatives are highlighted. Reliability and maintainability of an LHD system are disappointing. Total milling cost is composed of energy, liner and grinding media costs. In primary high ball load milling, the grinding media play the biggest role in total milling cost. This cost can be drastically reduced by improving the impact condition inside the mill. The impact condition inside the mill is influenced by shell liner design (as well as feed end and discharge design) and the type of discharge. The improvement of the impact condition will result in a significant decrease in grinding media consumption. The softened impact condition allows for better alloy optimization, resulting in a further reduction in grinding media consumption. Optimized liner design can also improve energy consumption as less energy is wasted in the projection of the grinding media. Magotteaux utilizes tools to simulate and show the grinding media trajectories for shell and end liners. This paper will present some practical examples where the media and energy consumption can be or has been reduced by optimizing liner design. The objectives of this study were firstly to characterize and quantify the inorganic material in the Secunda gasification feedstock. Secondly, the effect of washing on coal properties and sulphur content was investigated. Coal from a single source and a coal blend from 6 different mines were tested. Composite samples were visually sorted by a geologist in the groups containing roof, floor, C-shale, pyrite, carbonates and siltstone material. Inorganic mineral types from the single source and coal blends were characterized separately. Characterization results indicate that the average mineral matter distribution (mass %) of the coal tested was as follows: carbonates (6%), carbon-shale (19%), pyrite (12%), roof (18%), floor (46%) and siltstone (22%). The roof, floor, pyrite, carbon-shale, carbonates and siltstone in the single source and coal blend have similar chemical properties and characteristics, except for the ash melting temperatures of pyrite and kaolinite in the siltstone. By implementing selective mining and increasing mining management practices, the percentage discard in the run of mine coal can be significantly reduced, by up to 45%, if the mining of roof and floor material can be avoided. No significant impact of mining practices on sulphur content is expected in this case due to the low concentrations of sulphur in the roof and floor material. In summary, selective mining practices will probably result in almost45% decrease in the discard content in the run of mine to gasification, an increase in the carbon content from 55.0% to 58% (air dry basis) and a decrease in sulphur content from 1.1% to 0.9% (air dry basis). It is clear from this study that the main source of sulphur is not in the high ash-content mineral types (e.g. floor and roof), but in situ in the coal structure. Fracture initiation and propagation, being one of the most intensive subjects in rock mechanics; contribute significantly to the deformation of jointed rock masses. An experimental study on fractured granitic rock was carried out to determine the peak strength of specimen under triaxial loading conditions. The commonly observed failure mode for rock specimens in this study was found to be the shearing of the plane of weakness. The minimum peak strength of fractured rock is observed when the joint orientation is approximately 70° to the horizontal axis. Based on experimental test data, an empirical expression was developed to accommodate the effect of joint orientation and joint trace length in estimating the peak strength of fractured rocks. The predicted values of peak strength using the proposed equation well agree with the experimental results carried out on singly fractured specimens under triaxial loading conditions. The threshold stress values of crack initiation and propagation depend on joint geometrical parameters, their degree of interconnectivity, as well as surrounding stresses on the fracture plane.

Seismic events and pillar failures observed in two platinum mines in the Rustenburg area, South Africa, were investigated. We studied the sources of approximately 300 largest seismic events recorded in 2009. Moment tensors of these events were estimated from amplitudes and polarities of P- and S-waves. The inverted mechanisms contain isotropic implosive components in many instances. Analyses of uncertainty of the moment tensor solutions confirmed the significance of the implosive component in general. Several documented cases of pillar failure were considered in detail. For each of these a seismic moment tensor was calculated from an elastic stress model assuming an instant removal of a failed pillar. The geometries and magnitudes of the theoretical seismic moment tensors are in agreement with the observed (i.e. inverted from seismic data). The results indicate that either pillar failure or fracturing in the proximity of the reef (within a fraction of the dominant wavelength of seismic waves) are responsible for a significant portion of the large events recorded in these mines.

In the first part of the article, the authors give a broad overview of the chemistry and some engineering aspects of bioleach processes, eventually leading to the important and critical issue of the stability of arsenic-containing residues, especially those derived from bioleaching of sulphidic gold ores. In the section ?Factors affecting arsenic stability? they give an excellent summary of the factors normally affecting the stability of such residues. This is followed by some valid comments on the suitability of a single leach test to evaluate the long-term stability of solid waste streams. However, they fail to mention that, up till now, no tests procedure has been accepted by either environmentalists or the mining/processing industry as a valid method to test the long-term stability of solid wastes. Their own method is no exception, although, like many others, it is useful to identify potential problems with solid wastes considered for disposal.

The Modified Zincex® Process, developed by Técnicas Reunidas, is highly flexible dealing with a wide range of pregnant leach solutions. No matter if those solutions are produced from primary or secondary raw materials, and/or are based on conventional leaching, pressure leaching, heap leaching or bio leaching the result is always high-purity zinc product. The zinc solvent extraction unit within the process is a very effective barrier for impurities and a buffer for the composition of the pregnant liquor. This unit achieves an extremely pure aqueous extract that can be converted into different final products. All of them are characterized by fulfilling the highest purity standards. Also, there is the possibility to adapt the global process to a wide range of pregnant liquor compositions and various production capacities up to a zinc production limit over 150 000 t/a with a single solvent extraction plant.

Operational data of BOF and the slag samples for different starting conditions of phosphorus(0.06–0.26 per cent P) and silicon content (0.3–1.2 per cent Si) of hot metal have been analysed. The contribution of parameters that are well known to affect phosphorus distribution at tap, like basicity, temperature, FeO content of slag, slag mass etc., is investigated through the models of ionic theory of slag, optical basicity, regular solution approach and molecular theory of slag. The best overall results are obtained by the model based on molecular theory of slag in which several operational parameters are also incorporated. The investigations of different slag samples, based on optical, SEM, EPMA and X-ray studies, reveal the effect of MgO and Al2O3on slag morphology and phosphorus distribution in different phases. It is important to consider phosphorus distribution ratio in the solid and liquid part of slag. The solid part of slag, which is mostly dicalciumsilicate, can contain up to 5 per cent phosphorus. The phosphorus content of the liquid part of slag may depend upon the phosphorus content of hot metal or phosphorus load of slag. It is found that incorporation of effect of dicalciumsilicate in the model improves the accuracy of prediction. For better process control, the addition of iron ore towards the end of blow must be avoided while treating high phosphorus hot metal or during the production of ultra low phosphorus steels.
