Advanced optimizing control of the fluidised bed zinc roaster has been in use for an extended period at Boliden Kokkola and the implications are seen as extended bed stability, increased throughput and far better on-line availability. The roaster furnace control system developed is based on a dynamic and predictive furnace model, with parameters determined experimentally at the site. The controller maximises the concentrate feed and keeps the furnace operational parameters inside limits given by raw material mix and equipment constraints. The products of a zinc roaster, calcine, sulphur dioxide and the side products, such as mercury, meet gradually more stringent requirements, in particular as to their assays and total recoveries in the process chain. The end users of sulphuric acid in northern Europe, among others in the pulp and paper industry, require mercury levels much less than the conventional 0.2-0.4 ppm Hg. Therefore, secondary de-mercurising circuits have been used over the last five years for further cleaning the SO2 stream allowing production acid grades with less than 0.08 ppm Hg.

This investigation aimed to simulate the experiments performed by Nic Gay (Gay, N.C. 1976. Fracture growth around openings in large blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression. International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Minining Sciences and Geomechical Abstracts, vol. 13. pp. 231-243) on fracture growth around openings in blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression, using the Elfen discrete element code. The results of the physical experiments indicated a number of trends that were successfully replicated in the numerical simulations, including crushing ahead of the face, the formation of a sub-vertical tensile fracture at centre-span, the formation of groups of fractures originating from the crushed face zone, the formation of large corner-to-corner fractures which precede sample failure, and linking of slot corner and sample corner fractures leading to sample failure. In addition, other features were apparent that were not reported by Gay. It is believed that these took the form of conjugate shear fractures (as reported by Gay in a previous paper) and other features that may have been altered or inhibited by the presence of pre-existing structure in the physical samples. It was found that the samples, though nominally made up of the same rock type, must have had significantly differing properties. The presence of pre-existing structures may have contributed to this discrepancy. Strain measurements from the physical experiments were reasonably well matched, except where the gauge lay directly in the path of advancing fractures.

Main ore pass systems should last the life of a mine, and too often expensive and hazardous remedial measures are required to repair a damaged ore pass in an attempt to extend its life. In order to maximize the life expectancy of all ore passes at Moab Khotsong, ?wearing blocks? and ?softer support? systems, combined with basic rock engineering principles, have been implemented. Failure of an ore pass can have severe financial implications, both indirectly because the ore pass cannot deliver the broken rock either from level to level or directly in the shaft ore pass system to the required level for tramming to take place, and directly due to the cost of the repair work that is required. Several factors need to betaken into consideration so that production interruptions are eliminated or minimized. Investigations of damaged ore passes at Moab Khotsong and surrounding mines revealed some interesting mechanisms of damage, and some innovative methods of reducing or eliminating the damage have been implemented at Moab Khotsong. The system design was based on 30 years, experience in main shaft rock passes. The design was to counteract scaling, hang-ups and dust problems associated with main rock passes, and the objective was to increase the life of rockpasses. These problems, including the initial design aspects to try and eliminate the repair measures, are discussed in detail.

Several large falls of ground occur annually in the narrow, tabular stopes mined in the Bushveld Complex. These falls comprise safety risks and cause substantial production losses and compromise efforts to increase productivity. Underground observations in conjunction with instrumentation sites were used to establish the strategic parameters required to describe the rock mass behaviour of shallow-dipping stopes on the Bushveld platinum mines. Existing rock mass rating systems were evaluated using the observations and instrumentation results. None of the current systems adequately described all the relevant geotechnical conditions. Thus a hybrid of several current systems was developed, and the proposed system is discussed in the paper. The new rock mass rating system is termed the ?New Modified Stability Graph? system and follows the method originally described by Mathews et al.1and revised by Hutchinson and Diederichs2.Changes have been made to some of the tables provided by Barton3and to the stress analysis suggested by Hutchinson and Diederichs2. In addition, the logistical regression analysis has been applied to databases, formed using the suggested analyses, for three support resistances and risk levels established.

The main objectives of the Mine Mechanisation and Automation program (MMAP) are to enhance health and safety in underground mining operations, facilitate mechanization and automation in narrow-vein and deep mines, provide sound science to regulatory agencies and improve mine profitability. The program, which has a unique underground and surface industrial scale facility, is involved in many multi-partner projects, like hydrogen fuelcell applications, electrification and hydraulification of underground mines, reduction of noise and vibration, miner location device, explosive-free blasting and hoisting. The paper presents an overview of the Mine Mechanisation and Automation Program of Natural Resources Canada and some of the main projects.

ERPM was formed in 1893 and as a result of its age, a large volume of data exists in a paper-based format and it was decided to electronically capture data in one of two critical mining areas?namely at Far East Vertical (FEV) Shaft Area (Lower Areas) and Hercules Shaft Area (Upper Areas). The life of mine is dependent on tonnage and grade from these areas. Geostatistical evaluation of the gold reserves has been applied on an ad hoc basis in the Hercules Shaft Area and on a continuous basis in the FEV area. This is the first evaluation using geostatistics that was performed on the Upper Areas. This paper is based on the premise that regardless of cut-off grades, geostatistical estimation (kriging) estimates and locates reserves better than ?traditional? methods e.g. polygonal method, inverse squared distance method and it endeavours to estimate and locate the high grade reserves in the Main Reef Leader of Upper Areas.

Mineral resource evaluation requires defining geological domains that differentiate the types of mineralogy, alteration and lithology. Usual practice is to consider the domain boundaries as hard, i.e. data from across the boundaries are disregarded when estimating the grades within a given domain. This practice may hinder the quality of the estimates when a significant spatial correlation of the grades exists across the domain boundaries. In this paper, several geostatistical methodologies to handle soft geological boundaries are compared through a case study on a copper mine in Chile. The estimation methods considered are: ordinary kriging using hard boundaries between geological domains; ordinary kriging omitting the geological boundaries; traditional and standardized ordinary cokriging of the grades assayed in different domains; ordinary kriging within dilated geological domains, that is, incorporating samples from adjacent domains up to a given radius from the boundary of the domain being considered. The estimations are performed using a set of exploration data (drill hole samples) and are validated using a set of production data (blast hole samples collected for grade control). Results indicate that kriging with dilated domains performs better than ordinary kriging using hard boundaries or no boundaries and better than the ordinary cokriging approaches. It therefore appears as a simple alternative to global kriging (without considering the geological domains) and allows accounting for changes in the grade average, dispersion and spatial continuity with the geological characteristics of the deposit, via the use of grade variograms proper to each geological domain. The maximal distance for searching samples from adjacent domains should be chosen according to the spatial correlation of the grades across the domain boundaries, or via a cross-validation at an early stage of the mine or a jack-knife if production data are available. A good thing is becoming a bad thing. Rock mass classification systems, that are so excellent for communications between engineers and geologists, and that can be valuable in categorizing project experience, are emasculating engineering geology and rock mechanics. Some engineering geologists have been sucked into thinking that Q and RMR values are all that is needed for engineering purposes, and seem to have put aside what can be learned from structural geology and geomorphology. Many rock mechanics engineers seem to have forgotten the scientific method. This paper attempts to redress the situation by showing how mechanics can be used in rock engineering to design with a similar rigour to that used in the fields of structural engineering, hydraulics and soil mechanics. It also attempts to remind practitioners of what can be achieved by skilled engineering geology.

A number of countries have introduced codes governing the valuation of mineral assets and securities. The African continent will follow suit in due course considering the importance of the global minerals industry as it relates to the attraction of foreign investment. South Africa is to introduce the Petroleum and Minerals Development Bill legislating the involvement of previously disadvantaged individuals and communities in the country?s minerals industry. One of the challenges facing the successful implementation of such codes and bills lies with the abilities of independent valuators to value mineral properties and projects on a consistent basis. Certain valuation principles and methodologies are applicable in all jurisdictions in the minerals industry. These valuation tools and principles are considered and developed in this report. They have been discussed and developed to encourage minerals valuators to consider and consistently apply the most applicable valuation methodologies.

Longwall panels facing wind blasts have been investigated at both Newstan and Moonee Collieries in the Newcastle Coalfield under the Wind Blast Project of the School of Mining Engineering, The University of New South Wales. The fluid mechanics involved in the compression and expulsion of air during wind blasts have been defined and the overpressure and air velocity time histories utilized to determine the wind blast parameters and define the relationship between them. The characteristics of wind blasts pressure pulses in mine roadways show some similarity with transient phenomenon like air blasts from explosives and shock waves from the failure of pressurized vessels. The peak wind velocities in roadways, however, exhibit marked deviations from theoretical predictions based on compressible fluid flow and Rankine-Hugoniot relationships applied to goaf air displacement and panel geometry. Peak overpressures and wind velocities have shown a positive correlation with the areas of goaf falls, with the values peaking off for larger areas. The field investigations have helped the mine management in risk assessment and in evaluating the success of induced caving by hydrofracturing to mitigate the hazard.

To study the preparation process of an earthquake, we should get closer to the hypocentre. In co-operation with ISS International, we had an experimental field (~200 m x~200 m) without dykes and faults in a South African deep gold mine. We have monitored more than 20,000 seismic events (M<2) with borehole tri-axial accelerometers. We used a data acquisition system with 15 kHz sampling and 120-dB dynamic range. In a remnant area at a distance of 100?200 m, an earthquake sequence associated with an M~2 event occurred. Significant changes in seismic parameters such as stress drop, b-value, energy index were observed associated with the sequence. We installed Ishii?s borehole strain meters and could monitor as large a strain change as 10-4associated with mining. However, sampling was only 4 times per hour and 12 bit A/D. A distance from the M2 sequence was ~100 m, being not close enough. Therefore, we found another field with several crosscut tunnels excavated across a fault where an M=2-3 event is expected. We installed the strain meter within several metres of the fault to monitor both shear and normal strains on the fault. The strains are continuously digitized with a 24-bit 25-Hz A/D conversion. The Earth Tide (10-8)is clearly detected. Seismicity induced by longwall mining can be compared to earthquake swarm induced by fluid intrusion to vertical dykes. We also found a decrease in energy index in the source area of M>5events a few days before the major events. On 16 July 2004, at 07:10 a collapse of about 1.8 million m3 (about 4 ½ million tons) took place on the north wall on Nchanga Open Pit. This collapse was the result of a developing instability that was first identified when the benches in this area were exposed during September 2002. The NOP geotechnical and survey departments closely monitored the development of the failure. Control measures were implemented to reduce risk to men and equipment. These measures were continually improved and adjusted in reaction to observations and changing conditions. The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail the monitoring results that were obtained both by traditional methods and the novel slope stability radar system (SSR). Difficulties encountered in establishing critical deformation levels and deformation rates that can be used to predict the onset of collapse are described. Details of the monitoring and control measures, which led to the successful completion of mining in the area, are also described in this paper.

The widely employed IPCC models for the release of methane from underground coalmining operations are reviewed, and put in the context of the South African National Communication on greenhouse gas emissions. Then attempts to calibrate the model via measurements on South African coalmines are described. These attempts failed because it rapidly became clear that the IPCC model, involving methane adsorbed by the coal and released (a) by the depressurization of the strata caused by mining, (b) from the broken coal and (c) from coal remaining in roof, floor, pillars or goaf after mining, was not valid. Instead, measurements showed that the methane release was very variable, sporadically falling to zero. Carbon dioxide concentrations were monitored at the same time as methane, and followed methane concentrations. An alternative model was developed, in which methane was largely displaced from the coal and held in fissures, cleats and pores, which, when intersected by mining, released methane into the ventilation stream. In a key test of this hypothesis, methane concentrations around a continuous miner were monitored both during operation and after shutdown. Even during operation, methane became undetectable. It is hypothesized that heating of the South African coal-seams during the emplacement of the igneous dykes that cut so many of the seams caused displacement of the methane from the coal into the pores. This fissure-held methane, or free methane, is released rapidly once a pathway through the coal into the mine atmosphere is established. In contrast, methane adsorbed in the coal, and measured as the seam gas, desorbs relatively slowly. Measurements suggest that on average about 50%of the adsorbed methane is lost one day after mining. By that time, the coal will have left the mine, so that the remaining seam gas will be released to the atmosphere outside the mine. Attempts to measure methane emissions from surface coal-mining operations showed very little detectable methane. Coal from surface operations, which was milled and exposed to atmosphere, adsorbed gas from the air. It is concluded that methane release from surface operations is probably less than 3Gg/a. It is estimated that the total methane release from the coalmining industry amounts to about 72 Gg/a, as opposed to the National Communication estimates of 323 Gg/a in 1990 and 317 Gg/a in 1994. However, there are large errors associated with these estimates, and it is recommended that the methodology outlined in this report be extended to as many mines as possible to reduce the errors that are inherent in the physical processes underlying the release of methane from South African coalmines.

As part of a comprehensive risk analysis which was carried out into the effectiveness of the water barrier between South Deep and Randfontein Estate mines, the potential threat posed by large seismic events was assessed. The study covered several aspects. Firstly, an estimate of the maximum credible earthquake was obtained from a probabilistic analysis of the regional seismicity of the previous 25 years. Allowance was made for ?reservoir-induced? effects by increasing the estimate of the size of the maximum credible earthquake from ML= 5.1 to ML= 5.5. Based on available knowledge of the geological structure, the possibility of such an event occurring in the vicinity of the barrier pillar was estimated. The possibility of substantial damage to the barrier rock mass, resulting as a consequence of a large event, was assessed. The likely damage to the concrete control plugs installed in five tunnels that penetrated the barrier, which might result from a ?near-miss? by the largest possible seismic event or from a ?direct hit? by a smaller event, was also considered. It was concluded that there was a negligibly small possibility that the maximum credible earthquake could occur close enough to the barrier, and in such a manner, as to cause any damage to it or to the plugs in the tunnels passing through it. The possibility of serious plug damage occurring as a result of a ?direct hit? by as maller event was slightly greater, but still sufficiently remote as to be of no practical concern at all.

Many industries base their decisions on the assaying of tiny analytical sub-samples. The problem is that most of the time several sampling and sub-sampling stages are required before the laboratory provides its ultimate assays using advanced chemical and physical methods of analysis. As long as each sampling and sub-sampling stage is the object of due diligence using the theory of sampling it is likely that the integrity of the sought after information has not been altered and the generated database is still capable to fulfil its informative mission. Unfortunately, more often than not, unawareness of the basic properties of heterogeneous materials combined with the unawareness of stringent requirements listed in the theory of sampling, lead to the conclusion that massive discrepancies may be observed between the expensive outcome of along chain of sampling and analytical custody, and reality. There are no areas that are more vulnerable to such misfortune than sampling and assaying for trace amounts of constituents of interest in the environment, in high purity materials, in precious metals exploration, food chain, chemicals, and pharmaceutical products. Without the preventive suggestions of the theory of sampling serious difficulties may arise when making Gaussian approximations or even lognormal manipulations in the subsequent interpretations. A complementary understanding of Poisson processes injected in the theory of sampling may greatly help the practitioner understand structural sampling problems and prevent unfortunate mistakes from being repeated over and over until a crisis is reached. This paper presents an overview of the theoretical, practical and economic difficulties often vastly underestimated in the search for quantifying trace amounts of valuable or unwelcome components.

This paper is concerned with a study on the floor heaving in the transport road of the GLI Omerler Colliery in Tuncbilek-Turkey. This gallery has been opened at the depth of 200 m through the formation of marl in 4.6 m width and 3.5 m height in cross section. Floor heaving occurred up to 70 cm in height in maximum and caused severe problems in railway and band-conveyor transportation in the main road. In addition; after the current panel mined out, the shield support units could not be transferred to the new panel because of the deformation of roadway cross-section. The I-profile steel arch supports also sank into the weak floor rock. This situation has been studied by numerical analysis using the FLAC3Dfinite difference program in order to investigate the rock mass behaviour around the opening. The obtained outputs of the numerical model have showed consistency with the amount of floor heaving in the gallery at 200 m depth. A new gallery has been driven at the depth of 115 m and M4 longwall panel has just been taken to production. So as not to encounter with the same problems at 200 m depth, especially longwall face moving problem, various numerical models have been studied in order to keep the floor heaving in the acceptable limits required to move shield support units. This paper summarizes the results from a project aimed at adapting scroll centrifuges for application to the dewatering of flotation concentrates. The main impetus for the project was to reduce the high cost and footprint size of the technology currently used to dewater fine coal. The technical challenge was to enhance solids capture by incorporating a laser-cut screen into the design of the basket. The project has shown that a pilot-scale scroll centrifuge can be used to dewater froth concentrate. A number of different basket designs were tested, the best results being achieved with a basket comprising a laser-cut screen of aperture 70 µm. The best result on a sample of untreated flotation concentrate, which was taken from the open trough flotation cells at a coal preparation plant (CPP) in NSW was a solids recovery of 82 wt% at a product moisture of 24.3wt%. By comparison the best product achieved with a conventional wedge wire basket was a similar moisture content but solids recovery was only 64 wt%. This could only be achieved after the feed had been artificially thickened. Conditioning of the centrifuge feed with polymer flocculants led to an increase in recovery up to 88 wt% with a moisture content of ca 25 wt%. It is thought that optimizing additive selection and conditioning parameters, as well as screen aperture and open area, could improve performance still further. The results were obtained using centrifuging conditions (centrifugal force, feed solids, feed rate) in the pilot-scale machine which should be possible to translate into conventional designs of commercial scale machines, without downgrading solids throughputs. However only with full-scale trials will it be possible to establish this assertion with certainty.

All industrial processes are economically driven, resulting in the ever increasing need for process optimization in order to stay competitive and profitable. Numerous models has been published depicting the optimization of the raw material usage in an arc furnace, as well as the thermal and electrical efficiency; however, to obtain a holistic view of the cost-effectiveness of the process one needs to expand the model to include the cost of all the operational variables. This project therefore aimed to not only include the raw material feeds and power consumption as input variables, but also the labour, maintenance, and environmental costs to generate an all-inclusive financial balance. In the end, the model was able to mathematically optimize the ferrochrome (FeCr) production process through evaluating the effect of a specified combination of input parameters. It could therefore be used as a tool to aid in managerial decision-making; to appraise and correspondingly adjust certain operational variables in order to achieve a maximum return on investment. This paper fully describes the reasoning behind the choice of the essential model components, the assumptions made during the models development, the calculation approach, as well as the advantages, limitations, possible applications, and areas for expansion of the final model. Through running simulations with plant data, it was found that the accuracy of final model remained fairly constant when applied to stable furnace conditions, but was met with a number of limitations when applied to more complex situations. These limitations could, however, be overcome through further development and expansion of the existing model to include a larger number of process variables.
