During the commissioning phase, which is usually the most exciting part of a project involving the design and construction of metallurgical plant, the commissioning engineers interact between the client and the project management. The client wants to see whether all the equipment that he has bought and that, in his opinion, has taken far too long to erect will actually work. Project management expects the commissioning people to con¬vince the client that this is the best design ever developed and that never before have time and money been spent so well. The commissioning team has to fulfil these expectations. Commissioning work is a `shirt sleeve' function, with little of the glamour that is normally associated with fields such as engineering and operations. The team usually works in a partially completed plant with more temporary than permanent services and little (if any) office accommodation, normal working hours do not apply, and the demands made on the team change suddenly and dramatically. This article outlines the activities of the commissioning group and the systems used to smooth the commissioning path.

Prediction of the performance of explosives In bench mining by C. M. LOWNDS, B.Se. Hons (Rhodes), Ph.D (Cape) (Visitor) Some of the problems encountered in the calculation of the relative weight strength of explosives are discussed, and a realistic model of the behaviour of explosion products in a borehole is proposed. The heat flow from condensed to gaseous products is calculated as a function of time, and the relationship between the pressure and the volume of the product gases is found by a consideration of the compression of the rock between radial cracks. Work done on the burden is assumed to cease when the cracks first appear at the face. Reasonable values of burden and crack velocities are obtained from the model. Calculations of the relative weight strengths of aluminized mixtures of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil show that the increased density resulting from the addition of aluminium is the main advantage to be gained.

(Imperial College) (Visitor) The aqueous chemistry of gold(l) that has found practical application is mainly the chemistry of the anionic complexes involving ligands such as cyanide. sulphite, and the halides. The one potential exception is the cationic gold(I)-thiourea ion. While many laboratory studies have been made during the past decade. the application of thiourea in the processing of gold is only now reaching the development stage. While thiourea is relatively inexpensive. recent interest has probably been spurred mainly by the novel technology that could arise out of the cationic properties of the gold-thiourea ion. This review outlines the chemistry of gold and thiourea. and discusses the possible use of thiourea in the processing of gold with respect to dissolution. solvent extraction. ion exchange, electrowinning. electroplating. electroless deposition. electro-etching, and electropolishing.

Noise is a form of pollution arising mainly from the activities of man. One such activity is mining, in which man, as in many of his other activities, uses machinery of various kinds to achieve safe, healthy, and economic production. Trackless mining makes use of an advanced state of technology over that required In traditional mining methods. One of the advantages of the former, as distinct from any disadvantages it may have, is a reduction in noise levels, the number of people exposed to noise, and the duration of their exposure to noise. This paper briefly examines why noise is a problem and what various countries are doing about it in terms of standards, codes of practice, and regulations. It also investigates the extent to which noise is a problem in mining and how trackless mining alleviates this problem. The question is then posed as to whether South Africa is not setting too high a standard at this stage of its national development by comparison with what is being done by other, more-advanced countries.

This paper deals with the development of the cut-and-fill mining method at the Broken Hill orebody of Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Limited, at Aggeneys in the north-western Cape Province of South Africa. Lead, copper, zinc, and silver are produced. Production started in January 1976, being confined to blasthole production methods in the upper, steeply dipping areas of the orebody. This blasthole reserve is 70 per cent depleted, and pillar extraction is in progress. The balance of the production tonnage, 60 kt per month, is produced from three cut-and-fill stopes situated in the flatter-dipping areas of the orebody. The cut-and-fill mining method at Black Mountain is a result of research and planning activities that included the use of modelling, laboratory tests, mathematical analyses, in situ tests, and experience gained from other mining operations. These investigations and the resulting developed methods and designs are summarized in the paper.

The conference was attended by traditional leaders in the North-West Province, officials from the Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, and executives from the mining industry. The presentation concerned traditional governance in mining, communities? rights in terms of applicable legislation, and the corporatization of community affairs.

Compañia Minera Antamina, Peru has recently completed a fifth year of operation of their 301-km concentrate pipeline. The pipeline was commissioned by PSI in May of 2001. The Antamina pipeline is generally accepted as one of the most complex slurry pipeline operations worldwide. The pipeline transports an average of 1.6 million tonnes of copper and zinc concentrates from the Yanacancha mine site at an elevation of 4 155 metres above sea level (masl) to the port of Huarmey at an elevation of 62 masl. Currently ten different types of concentrates are being transported as separate batches. The pipeline traverses oneof the most rugged areas in the world. It utilizes three different pipe diameters, and four remote valve stations to optimize the hydraulic design. PSI has recently completed an overall operational audi tof the Antamina pipeline. This paper evaluates the operational effectiveness of specific design features and operating philosophies, implemented during the engineering phase, over the last five years of operation.

Owing to the helical construction of the wires and strands in a triangular-strand rope, a torque is generated when the rope is restrained and tensioned. When a rope is suspended vertically, there is a load differential along its length due to the self weight of the rope. This load differential gives rise to an initial torque differential m the rope. Since the rope is constrained only at the conveyance and sheave wheel, the torque along its length must be constant ID order to maintain equilibrium, a variation in lay length occurs so that the lay length at the conveyance end decreases, and the lay length at the sheave end increases, from the manufactured state. The tension-torsion testing of steel-wire ropes is discussed, and it is shown how the results of the tests can be used to predict static in-shaft torsional behaviour. The expected changes in strand lay length in very deep shafts (deeper than 2500 m) are calculated, and the associated problems and of severe changes m lay length on rope endurance and safety are discussed. Examples of current in-service rope distortions such as kinks and corkscrews are shown.

Surface Plasmon Resonance spectroscopy (SPR), combined with cyclovoltammetry, has been successfully used to study the interactions between ethyl xanthate, heptyl xanthate, dithiophosphate and propyl trithiocarbonate flotation collectors and a gold surface. Large, easily measurable responses have been obtained in the potential areas where the thiol collectors are known to interact with gold. The four collector types lead to differing SPR maximum values, with longer alkyl chains resulting in higher SPR responses, and the trithiocarbonate leading to the highest response values. The SPR responses differ considerably from the current density response at very anodic and cathodic potentials. There are indications that thiols might still be adsorbed at potentials as low as -300 mV (vs SHE). Crankshaft driven piston and piston diaphragm pumps inherently generate a varying flow each crankshaft revolution. Depending on the system connected, this flow variation results in a pressure pulsation. This pressure pulsation may, depending on the structural design, result in structural vibrations. In order to limit the level of pressure pulsations, volume absorbing devices, mostly gas filled vessels, are used. The standard selection of these so-called dampeners is based on the flow variation of the pump but does not incorporate the interaction with the connected system. The paper discusses the application of a pulsation analysis tool developed by WEIR Minerals Netherlands, manufacturer of GEHO positive displacement slurry pumps. The paper first discusses the basics of pressure pulsation analysis, such as flow variation generated by crankshaft driven pumps, and hydraulic effects such as capacitance, inductance and resistance and their influence on the hydraulic response of a system. Furthermore, the relation between pressure pulsations and structural vibrations, known as fluid structure interaction, will be discussed. Additionally, the capabilities of the pump pulsation analysis tool are presented, illustrated by examples of simulation results and experimental verification.

The pipeline transport of paste, backfill or thickened tailings slurries is an important component of the tailings disposal process in many mines around the world. These mixtures contain significant fractions of fine (clay) and coarse (sand) particles, causing them to exhibit non-Newtonian flow behaviour and high frictional pressure gradients. There is often economic incentive to operate these pipelines in the laminar flow regime. Irrefutable evidence has shown that coarse particle settling can occur during the laminar flow of these slurries even when static settling tests show no indication of such behaviour. Previously, a ?rule-of-thumb? minimum frictional pressure gradient of ~1.5 to 2 kPa/m was suggested to ensure effective sand transport, based on the results of tests conducted using viscous Newtonian oils. In this paper, we examine the results of laminar flow tests of non-Newtonian, coarse-particle laden slurries conducted with pipeline loops of 50, 100, 150 and 250 mm in diameter. The results indicate that the ratio of the mean wall shear stress to the mean surficial particle stress is abetter indicator of laminar flow settling tendency than frictional pressure gradient.

The effects of the mining of deep-level tabular reefs are usually evaluated by use of continuum, elastic mining simulation analyses. This paper gives the results obtained from a series of analyses in which stopes of limited span are considered to be excavated in a non-linearly non-elastic, jointed and fractured rockmass. In particular, the theoretical influence of soft backfill in these conditions is evaluated. It is shown that the stress distribution and behaviour of the rockmass, alternately taken as an intact-elastic and as a fractured non-elastic medium, are completely different. The relevance of the energy-release rate commonly calculated in mining-simulation analyses, and the efficacy of its correlation with seismicity and the associated rockbursts, are reviewed. In deep-level mining operations, it is not practically feasible to obviate releases of seismic energy. The fact of their occurrence should therefore be accepted and, rather than considering the reduction of energy release as the primary objective, efforts should be concentrated on minimizing the effects of such release. Analytical results are given to demonstrate that this approach is not only correct, but also the only feasible solution to the rockburst-seismicity problem in deep mines.

The techniques used in this study of the non-oxidative dissolution rates of high- and Iow-grade nickel mattes in hydrochloric acid involved leaching and the use of a rotating ring-disc electrode. It was found that the rate of metal dissolution depends on the potential at which the matte dissolves, a maximum rate of dissolution being observed at -0,2 V to 0,3 V (relative to a saturated calomel electrode). The results are comparable with those obtained in work on the dissolution of synthetic nickel and iron sulphides. The adverse effect of excess sulphur on the rate of nonoxidative dissolution is explained in terms of the mixed potential of the reaction. The leaching studies showed the feasibility of processing a high-grade nickel matte by non-oxidative dissolution, and indicate that maximum rates can be obtained in the presence of fairly Iow concentrations of oxidant. A relative selective dissolution of iron can be obtained from the Iow-grade matte under reducing conditions, thus resulting in a significant upgrading of this material. An important aspect of the project evaluation process is the achievement of a clear and quantitative understanding of the primary drivers influencing project value and risk. A business scenario-based approach is required to ensure that the project meets value and risk hurdles over the short, medium and longer term. Adopting an optimising approach can aid significantly in the development of a project concept into a business that is optimal and sustainable in the longer term. Through the application of case studies, based on work performed with various mining organisations during the last five years, this paper will demonstrate how project value and robustness can be optimised. Experience has demonstrated that applying this approach results in significant value improvements and risk reduction - primarily by application of a rigorous, fact-based analysis and optimisation process that rapidly increases management team understanding and insight of key driver of value and risk.

The tenth international symposium on the application of computer methods in the mineral industry (APCOM) was held in Johannesburg in April; the first time it had taken place outside North America. In the technical sessions fifty-seven papers were presented, providing a review of current work and including some important original contributions. These papers and a full account of the discussion at the symposium will soon be published in a single volume. The Technical Programme The first session of the symposium included an opening address given by Mr J. W. Shilling, President of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, and a keynote address by Mr K. F. Lane of the Rio Tinto Corporation Limited. Mr Shilling spoke about the history of the South African mining industry and about some of the work of the Chamber of Mines. He stressed the importance of the symposium in familiarising those in mining with computer applications, and expressed his hope that it would stimulate and inspire scientists and engineers in the effort to develop safer and more economic methods of mining. Mr Lane, talking about economic and financial modelling, gave a fascinating account of the experience of RTZ over the last twelve years. Tests indicated that effective recovery of pyrite from a coarse Witwatersrand quartzitic ore can be accomplished by intensified flotation in an air-sparged hydrocyclone. Air is fed through the porous cylindrical wall of the hydrocyclone into a swirling layer of slury. Hydrophobic particles are attached selectively to small air bubbles, which form a froth and are recovered through the overflow. Hydrophilic particles pass out in the underflow. A spigot in which flow is restricted by an orifice was found to be more successful in preventing blockage by wood chips than an annular opening between a pedestal and the cylinder wall. Pyrite recoveries of 85 to 93 per cent at grades of 35 to 40 per cent sulphur were obtained in the air-sparged hydroclone with residence times of about 1 second. Comparative tests in a batch flotation cell after 320 seconds yielded average recoveries of up to 96 per cent, but with a mean grade of 32,5 per cent sulphur. A high colector dosage of 120 g/t was required in the cyclone, compared with the 40 gft used in conventional operations. An air flowrate of about 150 I/min was adequate at a slury feed rate of 35l/min. Particle sizes between 38 and 106µm yielded the best flotation results.

The existence of an impressive reserve of oxidized cobalt-copper bearing ores in the African copper belt area lead the GECAMINES (DRC) to develop specific and adapted mineral processing routes (Mulaba-Bafubiandi, 2001). During the conventional diluted sulphuric acid leaching of oxidized cobalt-copper bearing ores commonly referred to as ?heterogenite?, more than 10% cobalt dissolution yield increase was observed in a plant situation (Mwema et al., 2002) when SO2(g) was flushed into the acidified cobalt leaching solution. The present paper attempts to elucidate mechanisms involved which lead to the increase of total cobalt as SO2 is flushed during the leaching of oxidized cobalt bearing minerals. The kinetics of cobalt dissolution as SO2 is flushed into the acidic solution as well as a full characterization, using UV-Visible spectroscopy, of Co2+ and Co3+ species present in the collected leachate are presented while possible effects of the presence of Cu and Fe on the leachability of cobalt bearing minerals present in the oxidised ore will be discussed. In the view of speeding up the leaching process, the mixed cobalt-copper oxidised ores were microwaves pre-processed. Preliminary results were also discussed.

Strategic mine planning is concerned with the decisions that determine the value of the business, while tactical planning deals with the tasks to realize that value. When tasked with formulating a strategic mine plan, the mining engineer often turns to commercially available software. However, these software packages have limited applicability to the RBM situation. Adopting a simpler, back to basics approach founded on a deep understanding of the economics of the orebody has the advantage of providing a clear logic to guide tactical planning. By creating a coherency between strategic mine planning, and tactical planning the likelihood of successfully executing the plans and attaining the value promised by the strategic plan is increased. This paper describes the reasons why RBM embarked on a strategic mine planning process, the rationale of choosing the process, and the process itself.

While some of the practical details of ilmenite smelting are not well documented, there is a substantial body of literature on the principles of ilmenite smelting, and the behaviour of solidified titania slag. This information is summarized, focusing on the basic reactions, departure from equilibrium, the behaviour of impurities, and reactions of solidified slag. The emphasis is on the South African operations.

Iron ore pellets with or without additives are commonly used as alternate charge material in both conventional and newer ironmaking processes. The performance characteristics of these pellets are normally assessed on the basis of their reducibility values, reduction strength and resistance to clustering. These properties depend mainly on the type and amount of additives and on the sintering phenomena of the pellets during firing. In the case of composite pellets (ore-coal pellets), reduction and sintering of the iron ore fines occur simultaneously. The thermodynamic and reaction mechanisms of the processes involved in the reduction of iron ore pellets with and without reductants, additives, etc., may not necessarily be identical. The reduction and sintering characteristics of pellets greatly influence the reaction mechanism and the surface morphology of the reduced pellets. The approaches in the literature to the analysis of these reduction and sintering phenomena are broadly categorized as follows: (i) empirical models, (ii) models based on kinetics, and (ill) models based on morphological changes. The relative merits and de-merits of these models are illustrated by their application to the reduction of fluxed ore-coal composite pellets. A critical analysis of the investigations that have been conducted on the reduction and sintering behaviour of such pellets is given. It is shown that, although elegant empirical models and kinetic equations have theoretical significance and can be usefully employed in elucidating the reaction mechanisms of iron ore lumps, they are sometimes not directly applicable to fluxed ore-coal composite pellets. In studies of the latter, the approach should be to correlate the morphological changes with the reduction mechanism. The paper also gives a brief account of an investigation on the reduction and sintering aspects of fluxed composite reduced iron pellets.
