The Australian underground coal mining industry has made extensive use of the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) classification system for a diverse range of purposes in recent years. These include mining method selection, and coal pillar and roof support design. This paper outlines a series of case histories, from large-scale feasibility studies to local support design investigations, that collectively illustrate the broad applicability, advantages, and usefulness of the methodology, as well as some of the current limitations. The key role of the CMRR in an overall hazard definition methodology is demonstrated for a major Australian project, and some ideas with regard to the future application of the CMRR, in the context of geotechnical risk management within a progressive, highly productive extractive industry, are put forward.

This report documents the work performed by Battelle-Northwest and its sub-contractors in Phase I of a project to develop a cross pit conveyor system for the Bureau of Mines. The conveyor system description includes details of the conceptual design as well as system and component specifications. The selection of primary and back-up sites for system demonstration is discussed. Maneuvers and operating sequences required for mining the selected demonstration site are described and illustrated in detail. Economic viability of the cross pit conveyor system was analyzed by estimating the cost of overburden removal per ton of coal using the Battelle-designed concept and comparing these costs to the cost of an available state-of-the-art 30-yd3 dragline operation. Testing and trade-off studies conducted are documented and the results presented. Alternate designs considered in developing the selected cross pit concept are included for completeness. Based on the evaluation of the selected concept, it was concluded that the cross pit conveyor system proposed by Battelle is a technically and economically feasible overburden handling method with a good potential to improve western coal mining efficiency.

Corundum, natural alumina, or aluminum oxide (A1203) is the hardest mineral known except diamond. Theoretical composition is Al 52.9 percent and 0 17.1 percent, but it always contains small quantities of impurities, chiefly silica, iron, and lime. The melting point of corundum is above 1950° C., and it is insoluble in the strongest acids. Its hardness (9 on the Mohs scale) varies slightly according to purity, and its specific Gravity ranges from 3.95 to 4.10, 4 being a fair average. The index of refraction is 1.760 to 1.768 and its streak is white. Luster is adamantine to Vitreous, come specimens pearly, and color varies widely from white, gray, pink, and blue to black, brown, or bronze. Gem varieties are transparent or translucent, and of more brilliant coloring - red, blue, yellow, purple, or green. Corundum occurs in opaque massive or block structure with parting planes little developed or only roughly delineated and in granular form as minute crystals or small, irregular grains interspersed throughout the contact zones of schists and gneisses.

Limestone formations in the United States can be subject to relatively high horizontal stresses owing to the existence of tectonic loading of the limestone strata. Underground limestone mines use the room-and-pillar method, in which 12- to 18-m-wide rooms are typically excavated. The stability of these excavations can be compromised by the horizontal stress, resulting in a rock fall hazard. Rock falls are the cause of 15% of all reportable injuries in underground limestone mines. Horizontal stress related damage can occur in the form of guttering along one or more sides of an excavation, roof beam buckling or oval shaped roof falls, with the long axis perpendicular to the major horizontal stress. Numerical analyses show that the pillar layout and orientation of the mine workings has an effect on the horizontal stress distribution within the roof. The effects of high horizontal stresses can be mitigated by orienting the heading development direction parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, reducing the number of cross-cuts and off-setting the cross-cuts to limit the potential lateral extent of horizontal stress related roof falls. The modeling approach described in this paper can be used as a tool to evaluate potential roof failure and optimize the stability of room and pillar layouts.

Mine fires constitute one of the greatest threats to the health and safety of those working in the underground environment and each event has the potential for disastrous consequences. Of the major mine fires and thermal events that have occurred in the United States in the last 6 years, it is estimated that remotely installed seals could have been used in 63% of the events to control fire growth or to aid in fire suppression work. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting full-scale tests at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Experimental Mine to evaluate and improve remote mine seal construction technology. The main focus of this work is to develop reliable technology that will completely close the mine opening from floor-to-roof and rib-to-rib. This paper presents the results of remote seal installations using grout-based materials.

This Bureau of Mines report describes calcination of kaolinitic clay in a direct-fired 2-1/2- by 24-ft rotary kiln at 750° and 775° C. Methods for preparing kaolin feed materials and characterization of calcined products are discussed. Approximately 99 pct of the alumina in a typical eastern Georgia kaolin was soluble in HC1 after calcination at either 750° or 775° C.

This report describes operations at the Rosiclare Fluorspar Works of the Aluminum Co. of America at Rosiclare, Hardin County, Ill. The works include the Fairview mine, the fluorspar mill, and related facilities. The publication covers exploration, development, mining and milling practices, mine-drainage problems, and other activities and is presented as part of the Bureau of Mines series of publications on mining and milling practices in various parts of the United States. The Rosiclare fluorspar area, for its size, has been the largest producer of high-grade fluorspar in the United States and probably in the world. The vein system in this area is over 5 miles long and 1/2 mile wide, and ore has been found as deep as 900 ft.

The Tenth International Conference of Directors of Safety in Mines Research was held in the United States from September 28 through October 2, 1959, at Hotel Webster Hall, Pittsburgh, Pa. The Conference was organized by the Federal Bureau of Mines. In accord with the program outlined at the Ninth Conference (1956, Heerlen, Holland), the papers submitted dealt with the following three subjects: 1. Safety of coal mine explosives 2. Explosion hazards in mines 3. Ignition and fires in mines Seventy papers were presented. There were eight technical sessions followed by an extended tour of the Bruceton facility of the Bureau of Mines on October 2. Simultaneous translation was provided in the three official languages of the Conference--English, French, and German.

Dusts can be filtered out of air streams onto polymer surfaces by electrostatic trapping resulting from the spontaneous transfer of electrons upon contact between dust particles and the polymer surfaces. Such spontaneous contact electrification has been studied quantitatively in this contract with the aid of modern semiconductor charge-sensors with the aim of determining what basic principles govern the sign and magnitude of contact electrification. Information obtained by capacitance-voltage measurements of thin polymer films on silicon showed that charges as large as 4 x 1012 electrons per cm2 develop spontaneously, and that such a charge gives adhesional forces of 165 pounds per square inch (11 atmospheres). Direct measurement of dust polymer contact electrification, using silicon surface channel conductance sensors, also showed spontaneous charges of more than 1012 electrons per cm2. Some polymers can either donate or accept electrons. These included chlorinated polyethylene, chlorinated polypropylene, polyethylmethacrylate, and a copolymer of maleic anhydride with n-octadecylvinylether. Other polymers never accepted electrons but could donate electrons; these included polystyrene, pulychlorostyrune, polyvinylchloride, polyvinylacetate, a polycarbonate (Lexan), and cellulose tributyrate. Contact electrification studies were made with dusts (coal dust, a channel black, or a silica powder) contacting thin films of various polymers solvent-cast onto the semiconductor charge-sensor. Sometimes charging was instantaneous and sometimes slower, but in all but one case (coal dust on a copolymer of maleic anhydride with n-octadecylvinyl ether) the charge trunsfer was a donation of electrons by the polymer to the dust. An instrumented spherical vessel has been used for many years to study laminar combustion waves. Concurrent measurements of flame speed and pressure-rise rates have led to evaluations of burning velocities, the pressure dependence of the burning velocity, and the expansion ratios of the gases passing through the combustion wave. For the most part, these studies have involved flames initially at atmospheric or subatmospheric pressure. The old spherical vessel used by the Bureau of Mines was not designed for use at elevated pressures. Moreover, being made of wrought iron, it was susceptible enough to corrosion to prohibit its use with many combustible mixtures that figure in industrial research. In mid-1956, under sponsorship of the Office of Naval Research, the Bureau undertook the development of a stainless steel spherical vessel capable of withstanding explosions of gaseous mixtures at initial pressures as high as 20 atm. and initial temperatures as high as 250° C. The design called for a double array (cross) of closely spaced small windows for observation of the flame as it traversed the vessel and a piezoelectric transducer to measure concurrently pressure-rise rates. Because no commercial contractor was willing to bid on the construction of such a vessel, it was built at the Bureau's Bruceton machine shop.7

Shear tests were performed on several prepared samples of granular and powdery bulk materials to investigate the following parameters: Particle size and distribution, particle movement, moisture content, consolidation of material, bulk density, void ratio, porosity, volume change, and strain rate. A series of shear tests was performed with weight-percent-ratios of minus 0.185-inch tertiary sand and 1-1/2-by l/2-inch tertiary gravel mixtures, and weight-percent-ratios of minus 200-mesh limestone (rock dust) and minus 200-mesh bituminous float coal dust. A comparison was made for shear test results obtained with rectangular and circular shear cells utilizing the large and small direct shear testers. Specifically, the shear results obtained include the angle of internal friction or shear strength of the tested material under known consolidating pressures, and the kinematic angle of friction or coefficient of friction between the interface of a bulk material and a sample wall material. The experimental procedure, tests, and results are given for each parameter investigated.

The Bureau of Mines is studying possible modifications in conventional uranium ore-processing steps to confine and permit controlled disposal of radioactive wastes. A potential method of minimizing pollution from radio-active nuclides, principally radium 226, in uranium mill waste streams is to reuse the waste solutions within the mill. Such reuse of waste solution in the Kerr-McGee Shiprock-type process was investigated in the laboratory. The Shiprock mill employs a two-stage acid-leaching process for dissolution of the uranium, countercurrent decantation for liquid-solid separation and washing, and organophosphorus solvent extraction for recovery of the uranium and vanadium from solution. The simulated use of barren raffinate instead of fresh water in the mill circuit was carried through a laboratory campaign of 28 interlocked leaching, washing, and solvent extraction cycles. About 99 percent of the uranium and 91 percent of the vanadium were dissolved from the are, Washing efficiency in the thickener circuit averaged about 99.5 percent when the pulp was washed with enough barren raffinate and makeup water to recover 2.5 tons of pregnant solution per ton of ore. The only solution discarded was that contained in the washed and thickened leach residue. A buildup of salts due to recycling of solutions did not adversely affect operation of the washing circuit.

Liquid oxygen explosives are ordinarily made from a carbonaceous absorbent and from liquid oxygen of high purity. These explosives have a limited but definite field of usefulness; their properties have been described in the literature, which includes several publications of the Bureau of Mines, the most recent dealing with fire-retardant treatments.3/ It seems generally conceded that the outstanding hazards in the use of these explosives are their high inflammability and their relative sensitivity to mechanical action. Each of these topics has been studied, and some interesting practical results have been obtained. Treatments have been described[7] that render liquid-oxygen explosives prepared from granular carbonaceous absorbents practically immune to the action of igniting agents representing or exceeding practical hazards in violence.

On Thursday, March 18, 1937, the country was shocked by news of a terrific explosion at the New London, Tex., school, which caused the death of 280 pupils avid 14 teachers. The explosion occurred at about 3:05 p.m. in the largest of the 11 school buildings on the campus. Fire 1 shows this building, marked "Main high school building", with respect to other buildings, pipe lines, oil wells, and gas lines or the property.

The principal activities of the Bureau of Mines Explosives Research Center during fiscal year 1967 (July 1, 1966, to June 30, 1967) arc reviewed in a part 1. Part 2 presents short abstracts of the publications issued during this period in the Bureau series and in other media. Part 3 describes a short study on the shock initiation of hydrogen peroxide not destined for publication elsewhere. Rhenium occurs in very small quantities (12).4 In order for the Federal Bureau of Mines to conduct an investigation of rhenium sources and methods of extraction, it was necessary to devise improved techniques for detecting and measuring minute quantities of the metal. A modification of the procedure of Malouf and White (46) was developed which can be used to detect rhenium in concentrations as small as 0.1 part per million and can be used to measure quantities of 1.0 part per million. It can be used for the analysis of siliceous and calcareous ores, of molybdenite concentrates, of fumes, of flue dusts, and of other metallurgical products. Development of the method involved devising an amine extraction procedure for separating rhenium from all interfering elements except tungsten and a selective distillation procedure for separating rhenium from tungsten. Adoption of these separation procedures permits use of large samples and precise determination of rhenium by colorimetric analysis of the thiocyanate complex of rhenium by means of a spectrophotometer.
