This circular is one of a series of papers on coal mining methods and costs which being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines for the purpose of making available to those interested in the industry a knowledge of the mining methods employed, the places here mechanical and hand loading are practiced, and coat data on the several operations pertaining to the removal of coal from the working faces and its transportation to the tipple for loading into railroad cars. Mining costs are governed by the relative efficiency of the mining method employed. The method is selected for Its adaptability to the local natural physical conditions such as the nature and thickness of the coal bed, its dip, the character of the coal, and the thickness of the overlying strata.

Lower workers' dust exposures during bag stacking while ergonomically improving the bag stacking process. Approach Install a new pallet loading dust control system which uses a push-pull ventilation technique along with a hydraulic lift table to control the pallet loading height throughout the entire loading cycle. How It Works A low-volume, high-velocity blower system operating at approximately at 120 cfm blows a stream of air over the top layer of bags on the pallet. The blower system is composed of two 3-inch air jets (approximately 1,200-ft/min velocity) directed toward an exhaust system on the opposite side of the pallet. As these air jets travel across the pallet, they en-train dust generated during bag stacking. The dust laden air is then captured by the exhaust ventilation system which draws approximately 2,500 cfm through an exhaust hood on the opposite side of the pallet.

The feasibility of simultaneously burning several paths through a coalbed to develop a multiple path underground gasification system was investigated by the Bureau of Mines during two experiments, Boreholes were drilled through the overburden and into the coal and arranged in a circle approximately 50 feet from a central borehole. In the first experiment, in an area which had previously been hydraulically fractured,5 air was injected at the center borehole. The coal was ignited at the other boreholes and the fire fronts traveled toward the center, counter to the flow of air, to backward burn paths through the coalbed. Two paths were linked during the first 5 days of operation. The outlets of these two paths were throttled and air pressure was increased to maintain the flow of air, but no other linkages were made. Fourteen days after the two linkages these two paths were opened and gasification was carried on for 10 days, but with only moderate success. In an effort to overcome operating difficulties air was injected at the peripheral boreholes, and the gases were drawn off at the center borehole. Reversed flow operations continued for 12 days and two more paths linked. The heating value of the gas generally was higher than 100 British thermal units per standard cubic foot (B.t.u. per std. c.f.). Because only four of seven paths linked, however, the entire system could not be evaluated with respect to product-gas output and recovery of energy.

A new, cheaper precipitation scheme has been developed to produce purified zirconium oxide, Technical-grade sulfuric acid is used to precipitate a basic zirconium sulfate from a hot dilute hydrochloric acid solution. With close control of temperature, pH, and zirconium - sulfate ratio, excellent purification and complete zirconium recovery can be attained. The process has been successfully applied for 3 months and has proved to be a more satisfactory procedure than the ammonium phthalate process used previously. This report by the Federal Bureau of Mines describes the carbonizing properties of coals from the principal beds in Boone County , W. Va . Results are given for samples of coals from No. 5 Block , Stockton - Lewiston , Coalburg , Winifrede , Chilton , Hernshaw , Cedar Grove , Alma , and No. 2 Gas beds . Boone County coals rank as high -volatile A bituminous . Eighteen of the 21 samples tested contained from 3.3 to 7.9 percent ash and 16 of the samples contained from 0.6 to 0.9 percent sulfur . Addition of sintered fly-ash/bottom-ash mixtures to rubber formulations failed to increase the skid resistance of the resulting products. Wear, tensile and hot-tear strengths, and resilience of the ash-rubber material, as determined in laboratory tests, were significantly less than that of comparable rubber. The material appeared unsatisfactory for automobile and truck tire manufacture, but might prove suitable as a filler in other rubber goods. Raw fly ash could not be satisfactorily compounded with rubber.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) spin trapping experiments have been carried out to investigate the mechanism of sulfite oxidation em¬ploying 5,5-dimethyl-l-pyrroline-1-oxide (DMPO) as a spin trap. The results show that sulfite autoxidation, catalyzed by Mn(II), involves not only the SO-3 radicals but also the •OH radicals. An addition of H2 02 to the sulfite aqueous medium significantly increases the •OH radical formation. This result provides new clues to the chemical mechanism of the sulfite oxidation and the sulfite toxicity.INTRODUCTIONStudies of the oxidation of the sulfite (SO 2-/3) ions under various conditions are of high current interest because excessive exposure to sulfite is toxic and the origin of this toxicity seems to involve sulfite oxidative pathways [1]. An important fact is that human exposure to sulfite is on the increase [1,2]. Some of the increase in the sulfite exposure is linked to the fact that SO2 is a major air pollutant [2] and in aqueous media SO2 exists in equilibrium with SO2-/3. In addition, beverages and foods are common sources of sulfite intake. For example, sulfite is used extensively in the wine industry as an inhibitor of yeasts and bacteria and is present in finished wines in concentrations up to 6 mM [1]. Sulfite is also often added to dehydrated fruits, vegetables and soups, as well as fruit juices and beer [1,3,4]. Because of these, the mean daily intake of sulfite from diet (in the United States) has been estimated to be between 0.0014 and 0.14 mM/kg body weight [1]. At such high levels, sulfite exposure can have toxic effects, such as the induction of an acute asthmatic state [5,6]. Sulfite also appears to have adverse genetic effects [7] and can act as a mutagen or comutagen [8] and a cocarcinogen [5,7-9]."

The purpose of this study is to provide data that demonstrates that the Alcoa flash calciner design can be used for the decomposition of AlCl3?6H2O to A1203. Heat and material valance data for calcination provides data on the partial pressure of HCl in the off-gases. Experimentally determined data for the HCl partial pressure, over solutions expected in producing alumina from clay by the hydrochloric acid process, show that HCl can be absorbed from the off-gases into process solutions to effect crystallization of AlCl3?6H2O.

Sulfur compounds have long been recognized as damaging pollutants of the air. A number of investigations have been made to determine the amount of such compounds existing in the air of various cities; moreover, some study has been given to the conditions affecting the concentrations. This paper summarizes published investigation and includes a bibliography on the subject. The methods of obtaining data have differed to the type of sampling, analysis procedure, hour of sampling, number of locations, and number of determinations made. Sampling methods include both the continuous type, covering a day or a number of days, and what can considered the ?snap? type, covering very short periods. Continuous sampling has, given data representing the average concentration at the location chosen but no information regarding variations from hour to hour, are none that might be said to represent the average for a city. The snap-sampling method, while not giving a true average for any one location or area, has in some instances made available date regarding variations of concentration during different hours of the day and at various locations or zones within the area chosen. Although the sulfur compounds in the air nay include sulfur dioxide, sulfur trioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and organic compounds of sulfur, most investigators report on the basis of sulfur dioxide. This gas unites with moisture to form sulfurous acid.

The land-pebble district of Florida, wnich in 1928 supplied 96.7 per cent of the phosphate production of that State and 82 per cent of the domestic requirements of the United States, is centered in Polk and Hillsboro Counties about 30 miles east of Tampa The deposits are unconsolidated sediments occurring as beds of phosphate matrix overlain by a mantle of barren sands and clays. The matrix consists of a mixture of sand (quartz grains), clay, and phosphate rock in which the coarsest sand is much finer than the coarsest phosphate; that is, the sand is segregated in the fine material. Before the introduction of classifiers the concentration consisted of log washing, and screening at about 20-mesh, which was usually the finest size that could be taken to maintain commercial grade, 66 per cent B. P. L. (bone phosphate of lime) or more. When classifiers were introduced some of the fines that had escaped at the head of the washery and some of the minus 20-mesh material isolated during the washing and formerly lost supplied the feed. During October, 1927, the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy began to investigate the amenability of phosphatic sands to gravity methods of concentration. The work was under the immediate supervision of B. W. Gandrud, acting supervising engineer of the Southern Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Will H. Coghill, supervising engineer of the ore dressing section of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. More comprehensive testing followed and in the early part of 1930 some of the companies cooperated with the bureau and the above-mentioned institutions in conducting a series of tests on hydraulic classification and tabling. The results indicated that marketable concentrates could be obtained with a recovery of 25 to 45 per cent of the phosphate formerly lost. As a result two companies have introduced hydraulic classification to treat the current tailings, and one of them has substituted classifiers for the 20-mesh screens which had been unsatisfactory. Because the phosphate grains and quartz grains have nearly the same specific gravity, the use of concentrating tables by the customary methods is not applicable. The washeries included in the following report are designated as Nos. 1, 2, and 3.

The solubility characteristics of mono calcium aluminate (CaO A₁₂ 0 ) in water and in NaOH , Na₂ CO₂ , and NaOH - Na₂ CO₂ solutions were measured by determining the changes in Al2O3 concentrations in solution over a period of time at a specified temperature . The monocalcium aluminate was synthesized by sintering its starting components for 72 hours at 1,375 ° C. Distilled water and aqueous solutions of technical grades of NaOH and Na₂ CO₂ were used as solvents . The extraction of alumina from the monocalcium aluminate was dependent on the composition of the solvent and partially dependent on temperature for leaching . About 98 percent extraction of alumina from the aluminate occurred in Na₂ CO3 solutions containing 10 to 12 percent NaOH . Other solution compositions produce lesser extractions .

The Ladd manganese deposits are in San Joaquin County, Calif., about 13 miles southwest of Tracy. The deposits are confined in two main areas of development, roughly about 1,700 feet apart horizontally, and known as the Ladd mine and Fabian mine, respectively. The deposits occur as interbedded lenses in the white cherts of the Franciscan formation. The ore minerals are bementite, rhodochrosite and psilomelane. As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a development program was started. August 24, 1940, and completed on June 24, 1941. The Federal Geological Survey cooperated by mapping the geology and logging the drill cores. The program included road building, trenching, rehabilitating the mine workings, trenching underground excavation, sampling, and core drilling. The following pages mention the location, give a brief history, and note the physical features of +1-.1, district. Mine workings are sketched, the deposit is described and the plan of the project is noted. The work performed by the Bureau of Mines is explained in the concluding pages with a summary of the drill hole logs.

During this study in 1983, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined one mine and five prospects in the Greenwater Valley Wilderness Study Area (WSA). No mineral resources were identified within the WSA. Principal mineral commodities in the WSA are gold and silver with minor lead, and zinc. Two properties have significance; sample analyses indicate the Salsberry Prospect may have gold-silver-lead-zinc resources, and the Graham Jem Mine may have gold resources. The likelihood for development is greatest at the Salsberry Prospect, although the only recorded production from the study area was from the Graham Jem Mine; in 1908 less than 1 ton of gold-bearing ore valued at $25,000 per ton was produced. Gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper minerals in the WSA are associated with rhyolite dikes and quartz veins in Precambrian gneissic rocks, commonly concentrated in sheared zones along the dikes and veins. Although known to contain silver-lead deposits elsewhere, Precambrian Noonday Dolomite sampled inside the WSA contained no significant mineral values. Much of the WSA is covered by relatively unmineralized Tertiary and Quaternary volcanic rocks. The Bureau collected 140 rock samples at four adits, nine shafts, four trenches, and 33 prospect pits in the WSA. In 1983, 14 lone claims and one millsite within the study area were current. No patented claims, placer claims, or coal, mineral, oil and gas, or geothermal leases were in the WSA.

This study estimates capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for four underground bituminous mines producing coal with annual production ranging from 1.06 to 4.99 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of November 12, 1973, under the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1971, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1973 indexes. Initial capital investment ranges from $12,540,700 for the 1.06-million-ton-per-year (MM tpy) mine to $44,720,500 for the 4.99 MM tpy mine. Total capital investment ranges from $21,850,700 to $75,693,500 for the same mines. Corresponding selling prices for the coal range from $8.76 to $7.53 per ton, assuming a 12-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes.

Laboratory experiments were conducted on several materials to determine their suitability for the production of mineral wool. By blending raw charges in the proper proportions and in some instances by adding lime, acceptable wools were made from samples originating in Alaska, Florida, Texas, and Virginia. It was shown that satisfactory wools can be produced from many kinds of raw materials if the ratios of acidic and basic constituents are properly maintained. INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Mines has facilities at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station, Rolla, Mo., for examining and testing mineral-wool raw materials. Samples are evaluated through small-scale wool-blowing experiments, aided by petrographic, chemical, and physical analyses of the raw materials and finished wools. When enough experimental data have been accumulated they are made public through Government reports and periodicals. This report of investigations follows that published in 19513/ and presents test data on samples received and examined since 1951.

"INTRODUCTION During its wartime program of exploration for minerals essential to the national economy, the Bureau of Mines was instructed to investigate sources of raw materials used in the manufacture of iron and steel. As a part of this investigation, some work was done on the iron deposits on the Neutral and Aztec claims on Buckhorn Mountain Canogan County, Washington, which was designed chiefly to indicate the nature and behavior of the ore deposits below the surface exposures. Diamond drilling was started in June and completed in July 1945. Preliminary laboratory tests on iron, ore from Buckhorn Mountain were completed during the fall and winter of 1945. This report presents the data obtained from the investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. "SUMMARYElectron spin resonance (ESR) measurements provide direct evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl radical, as well as an isolable Cr(V)-glutathione intermediate in the Cr(VI) glutathione redox reactions. These results indicate a new mechanism for the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione in relationship to cellular environment and suggest that synergistic reactions of Cr(V) and GS· might be responsible for the (unexpected) increase in the Cr(VI)-induced DNA-strand breaks at high glutathione levels.INTRODUCTIONWhile the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione (GSH) is thought to be a critical' step in the pathogenesis of the Cr(VI)-exposure related carcinogenesis1- 4, the exact reduction mechanism is not yet understood. The following reaction steps have been suggested :(A) Initial step:Cr04 2- + GSH - GSCrOa - (1)(B) At high GSH levels:GSCroa- + GSH - Cr( IV) + GSSG (2)(C) At low GSH levels: GSC rO a - - Cr ( V ) + GS ·(3)Thus far, however, in these reactions, the GS· radical has eluded spectroscopic detection, while the evidence for the Cr(V) formation has been reported positives as well as negative2·. Her~ we present spin-trap ESR evidence for the formation of the GS· radical, and a definitive ESR detection of an isolable cr(V)-GSH intermediate in Cr(VI)-GSH reactions.MATERIALS. AND METHODSESR spectra were obtained at X-band (-9.7 GHz) using a Bruker ER200D ESR spectrometer. The magnetic field was calibrated with a self-tracking NMR Gaussmeter (Bruker, Model ER035M) and the microwave frequency was measured with a Hewlett-Packard (Model 5340A) frequency counter. The spin probes, a-(4-pyridyl-1-oxide) -N -tert-butylnitrone (4-POBN) and 5,5-dimethyl~1-pyrroline-1-ox1de (DMPO) were purchased from Aldrich, K2Cr201 from Fisher and used without further purification. All experiments were done at room temperature."

An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and from the data developed, to determine: (a) Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke; (b) Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced; and (c) Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation. This report is one in this county series that describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Perry County, Ky.

"Two source apportionment techniques have been applied by the Bureau of Mines to aerosol measurements in diesel equipped underground noncoal mines. The first technique is based on size selective sampling and the premise that the diesel exhaust fraction of the aerosol is predominately sub-micron in size while the mineral dust fraction of the aerosol is mostly super-micron in size. The second technique, Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) modeling, was used to referee the analysis of diesel and mineral dust aerosol concentrations with the size selective method.The size distribution data were modeled using a log-normal regression to parameterize the sub- and super-micron fractions of the sampled aerosol and to estimate the mineral and diesel contributions to each. For the mines visited, analysis of the size selective: samples yielded an average value for the fraction of the fine aerosol attributable.to mineral dust of 3 pct.'The CMB analysis, applied to both fractions of the respirable mine aerosol, yielded the amount contributed to each by the diesel· and dust aerosol sources. Less than 5 pct of the sub-microm fraction was mineral dust, however, as much as 20 pct of the diesel aerosol was found: ""in the super-micron fraction requiring a correction of the sub-micron fraction to account for the missing diesel mass. More accurate measurement will require a carbon specific analysis of the aerosol."
