Methods of preparing small heats of steel containing radioisotopes were developed, and the techniques of stripping film autoradiography were used to detect and study the carbide and sulfide phases in titanium-bearing steels. Metallography had revealed areas of titanium sulfide and ferrite or pearlite adjacent to areas of titanium carbide and ferrite, and unidentified, irregular phases at the boundaries between these two areas. Sulfur 35 was used to deter-mine the extent of the titanium sulfide inclusions, and carbon 14 was used to delineate the titanium carbide phase. Individual radioactive areas were located with a resolution of approximately 10 microns. A general background exposure that was not correlated with microscopically visible phases was observed in the carbon 14 autoradiographs. The evidence from both sulfur 35 autoradiographs and carbon 14 autoradiographs indicated that the unidentified inclusions were sulfides rather than carbides. INTRODUCTION The use of radioisotopes to facilitate the work at the Rolla Metallurgy Research Center was expanded in fiscal year 1959 when the Bureau of Mines authorized the installation of an intermediate-level radioactivity laboratory. Before this time, sealed cobalt 60 sources had been employed for radiography, but no tracer work was done. The primary objective of the first experiments conducted in the new laboratory was to supplement physical metallurgy investigations of selected problems in steel research.

"One of the properties of an explosive, of interest to the user, is its ability to transfer detonation across an air gap to another explosive charge. This Property is of particular importance with permissible explosives used in coal mines, since they are relatively insensitive to detonation when compared to many of the commercial dynamites used in metal mining.An essential characteristic of an explosive is that it shall always be sufficiently sensitive to propagate detonation completely. An insensitive explosive constitutes a hazard because of (1) the danger of drilling into unexploded portions of charges of explosives which have partially misfired, and (2) the likelihood of a low order of detonation, or the burning, of all or part of the charge in a hole prepared for blasting. The latter condition not only usually produces large volumes of poisonous gases, but it is particularly hazardous in gassy or dusty coal mines where explosions may result.The Bureau of Mines and manufacturers of explosives determine the sensitivity of explosives to detonation over an air gap by means of a [(halved-cartridge gap test,"" for which the ends of the cartridges of explosive exposed to one another, are cut off. Since in blasting, the crimped ends remain on the cartridges used, this investigation has been made to ascertain the effect of the crimped paper ends on the distance detonation is propagated over an air gap as compared with the propagation distances obtained when the crimped-paper ends are removed."

The petroleum-refining industry established a new record in fuel efficiency at refineries in 1936, when 597,000 B. t. u. of heat were required to refine a barrel of crude oil, compared with an average of 615,000 B. t. u. in 1935 (see fig. 1). The principal factor in the "indicated gain in fuel efficiency at refineries in 1936 was an increase in crude runs of 11 percent over 1935. A large part of the heat utilized at refineries is consumed elsewhere than under stills, or in ways quite independent of crude-oil distillation. In other words, as the operating ratio (crude runs divided by capacity) for refineries increases toward the maximum of 100 percent, the fuel requirements show progressively smaller increases and the average E. t. u. consumption per barrel of crude refined declines.

The Bureau of Mines undertook a bench-scale study of three different types of oxidized taconites3 from the Lake Superior district to improve the dispersion-selective flocculation-desliming process for beneficiating these materials. The response-surface contours of the effects of dissolved ionic species in the water and of three dispersion systems on the selective flocculation process were studied. Results of metallurgical data and chemical analyses of the aqueous phase showed that the water quality affects the performance of the selective flocculation process.

The Bureau of Mines has devised techniques to recover lithium from geothermal brines as the chloride. More than 99 pct of the lithium was precipitated from a brine containing 170 mg/L Li by adding a solution of AICl3 and increasing the pH to 7.5 with lime slurry. The Li-Al precipitate was dissolved in HCl and sparged with gaseous HCI to recover the AlCl3; this resulted in a solution containing LiCl and CaCI2. The solution was evaporated at 1000 C to obtain a mixture of the chlorides from which 97 pct of the lithium was recovered and 90 pct of the calcium was rejected by leaching with tetrahydrofuran. The LiCl recovered by evaporation of the tetrahydrofuran was purified by dissolution in water and treatment with oxalic acid. The final LiCl solution contained 89 pct of the lithium originally present in the brine and had a purity of 99.9 pet.

General expressions for evaluating practically all the thermodynamic properties of a fluid from a single equation of state are derived. Most of the formulas are expressed in terms of the compressibility factor, with this factor being an explicit function of the temperature and the molal density. The Bureau of Mines Helium Field Operations has developed a method for determining the helium-3 CHe) content of natural gas and mixtures eontaining 0.5% to 100% helium. The helium is preconcentrated by passing samples through anhydrone, a liquid-nitrogen-cooled chareoal trap, and a titanium absorption trap. The mass spectrometer used to analyze the samples is tuned to 3He at mle ::=; 3.016. Hydrogen deuteride (HD+) interference is minimized by the titanium absorption trap and high instrument resolution. Sample measurements are compared with identically made measurements of a gravimetrically prepared primary standard. The method has a limit of detection of 0.15 ppb with a relative deviation of 13% below the 1~ppb level. The relative deviation is less than 7% for gases eontaining over 100 ppb 3He. The helium isotope ratios of natural gases from the Bureau's Tuck-Trigg Dome Red Cave, the Bush Dome Red Cave, and the Bush Dome Brown Dolomite Formations are distinguishable from one another and from the isotope ratio of crude helium produced from the Panhandle-Hugoton Gasfield.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. Many of the mines were developed.A preliminary examination of the Sultan mine was made in January 1945 by the author, who recommended investigation by drifting and crosscutting. The Bureau conducted a project at the mine from April to June 1946. Claims investigated are in sec. 20, T. 25 S., R. 58E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, in southern Clark County, Nev., about 7 miles southwest of Good-springs.The Sultan mine has been an intermittent producer of zinc-lead-silver ore since 1910. During World War II, ore was shipped to the Government stock pile at Jean, Nev., and to the International Smelting& Refining Co.'s smelter near Salt Lake City, Utah. Throughout the past year, ore has been milled and the concentrates have been shipped to the smelter."

This circular presents the method of making tests and apparent results of comparing performance of tungsten carbide insert bits and steel detachable bits by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at the company's mines on the Marquette iron range of Michigan. The mines are at Ishpeming and Negaunee, Mich., and include the Cliffs Chaft, Mather "A", Cambria-Jackson, and Mather "B". There are four general characteristic types of high-grade iron ore on the Marquette range. B. H. Boyum2/ classifies the Cliffs Shaft as "hard-ore" and the Cambria-Jackson and Mather "A" as "soft-ore" types of deposit. Shaft sinking through Jasper, slate, and graywacke was in progress at this writing at the Mather "B", with completion at 3,100-foot depth in August 1949. The many different kinds of rock and ore at the mines of the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Co. and the experimental work being carried on with carbide in- sert bits make it possible to compare, generally, the carbide insert and steel detachable bit. The type of "hard ore" at the Cliffs Shaft mine re- quired close study of the possible use of the insert tit, and their records are more complete than those of the "soft-ore" mines. History and development of tungsten carbide tips inserted in rock drill bits have been covered by R. W. Adamson, C. H. Vivian, R. C. Sullivan,5/ and others. Tungsten carbide insert rock bits have only recently been introduced to the domestic mining industry. Although unusual performance records are being reported at operations employing the insert bits, the general adaptability of the tool to all rock types and the advantages to be gained by using carbide insert tits remains to be demonstrated. Insert-bit performance is being observed at numerous mines and quarries throughout the United States The several mining operations at the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Ishpeming, Mich., is one site where exhaustive comparative tests of insert and conventional steel detachable bits are currently in progress. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report summarizes Federal mandatory belt conveyor automatic fire suppression system installation requirements and inspection procedures, identifies system failure modes observed during in-mine investigations, and suggests system design and maintenance upgrades which, if implemented, would result in an improvement in overall system reliability. This report is a compilation of recommendations based on discussions with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors, review of manufacturer's literature, discussions with mine personnel, and research investigations of automatic fire suppression system performance in the laboratory and in mines. The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) requirements for installation, inspection, and maintenance of fire suppression systems should be regarded as minimum standards.

A survey of the literature has been made covering the extraction of bismuth from raw materials, its separation from lead, and its subsequent refining. The use of aqueous, nonaqueous, and fused electrolytes in electrolytic refining is reviewed. This literature survey has been prepared preliminary to some proposed investigations concerning the electrometallurgy of bismuth, and, although an effort has been made to cover a majority of the applicable references, a critical review was not attempted and no assertion is made that this manuscript is exhaustive in nature. Titles of publications in parenthesis are translations from the language in which the reference was originally published.

The motor gasoline that is bring marketed in the United States this stunner is slightly more volatile than that sold a year ago. During the past eight years the Bureau of Mines has made semi-annual surveys of the gaoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the sixteenth in the series. The cities in which samples have been collected have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Office for Mine Safety and Health Research, is investigating the geologic and mining factors influencing the migration of longwall gob gas. One goal of these studies is to optimize methane drainage strategies to reduce the volume of gob gas that reaches the underground workplace. As part of this research effort, longwall gob gas flow paths in a mine operating in the Pittsburgh Coalbed, PA, were investigated using SF6 tracer gas. Tracer gas released into the ventilation airflow underground generally stayed in the bleeder system and was vented at the associated bleeder fan shafts. Tracer gas injected into an inactive (intaking) gob gas venthole migrated to the two inby producing ventholes on the study panel, indicating that all three ventholes were in communication. The tracer gas that was injected into the gob generally stayed in the gob and only migrated to the ventilation system in response to the venthole on the study panel closest to the injection hole going off production. Tracer gas flow velocities in the longwall gob reservoir and factors influencing the production performance of gob gas ventholes in the study area are also discussed.

"The limestone deposit utilized by one of the plants of the Universal Atlas Cement Co. is covered in part by a stratum of cherty limestone. If this overlying deposit could be utilized by removing the excess of chert economically, quarry costs could be reduced and the amount of rock economically available would be increased greatly. On account of the distribution of flint and limestone, a product fairly free of flint can be obtained until the quarry face is about 50 or 55 feet high. As the face is worked farther back into the hill, the comparatively clean stone is overlain with a constantly increasing amount of high-flint limestone. If this flint remained with the limestone, there would be a prohititively high silica ratio in the finished cement; if the flinty layer were removed as overburden a very large tonnage would be handled and much good stone lost. Consequently it was felt that means should be devised for separating the flint from the limestone after it reaches the plant.The investigation was undertaken by the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Universal Atlas Cement Co. and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo.CONSIDERATION OF PROCESSESMany schemes for the separation of Minerals are based on differences in the specific gravities of the minerals to be separated. In this case the flint has a specific gravity of approximately 2.62 while the limestone averages about 2.70. This differential is not large enough to permit separation by any method based on specific gravity. Furthermore, all the limestone particles in any given sample are not alike; usually about 10 percent of them have a specific gravity the same as, or lower than, the flint."

The Colorado Minerals Co. calcite properties in Archuleta and Hinsdale Counties, Colo., (fig. 1) were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers in 1943. The demand for optical calcite during the war prompted the examinations and resulting development programs on the Meadows and Seavy ranch properties near Pagosa Springs, Archuleta County. Development was begun on the Meadows property in November 1943 and continued to the Seavy ranch property. The work consisted of stripping the overburden from the calcite areas and excavating pits and trenches with a bulldozer. The pits and trenches exposing the most promising calcite veins were then deepened by hand, and one shaft was sunk to a depth of 30 feet. A total of 36 trenches and 9 pits were excavated by bulldozer and. hand methods (figs. 2, 3, and 4). The calcite deposits occur as veins and irregular bodies filling fractures in the Mancos shale of Cretaceous age. The fractures persist for considerable distances along the strike, although the calcite filling may not be continuous for more than a few feet. The widths of individual veins range from a few inches to several feet. The calcite crystals uncovered at the surface and in pits, trenches, and shafts were found to be unsuitable for optical purposes because of fracturing and color in the crystals.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report addresses issues involved in using a limited number of training apparatus to give hands-on self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) training to a succession of miners, and provides guidance regarding methods for minimizing the spread of infectious diseases. Procedures used for preventing the spread of infectious organisms in dentistry, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training, and scuba training are examined. The sanitizing methods of three organizations that require individuals to insert the mouthpiece as part of the SCSR donning sequence are discussed. It was found that each of these organizations was able to render their mouthpiece assemblies microbe free simply and inexpensively.

In order to extend or delimit the known ore reserves adjacent to the Comet Coalition property on the western slope of the Highland Peak Range about 8 airline miles west of Pioche, Nev., the Bureau of Mines undertook an exploration project of diamond drilling. Production figures from this property, formerly known as the Schodde, are not available, but it has been reported that small amounts of rich silver and gold ore were Shipped by wagon to a smelter in the Salt Lake valley during 1900-1910. Small shipments were reported for the period 1915-1927, also. A study of the Pioche District by the Federal Geological Survey in 1942 and 1943 was the basis for the exploration program of the Bureau of Mines in 1947 This program consisted of diamond-drilling three holes. The total footage was 2,967 feet. No. 1 hole was drilled 1,260 feet, a record depth for diamond drilling in the Pioche District. Silver-bearing lead-zinc sulfide ores are found in the Combined Metals limestone, known locally as the C.M. bed, These deposits have been formed by replacement of the limestone that is inclosed in the Pioche shale.

The Bureau of Mines has successfully used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a tracer gas to measure mine air flows under conditions where conventional methods have failed. SF6 was employed experimentally to measure accurately recirculation of return into intake air caused by leakage through an old stoped area, to check for potential leakage from an adjacent mine, to trace 10,000 cfm of "lost" air from an intake airway, and to measure transit air time through uranium mines. It proved useful as a means of accurately measuring airflow volumes in airways of large cross section and very low flow velocity, and in determining the recirculation resulting from underground cooling plants.
