A field method has been devised for rapid determination of heavy minerals occurring in the unconsolidatod beach and dune sands. The method has been proved practical by usage in field evaluations of several hundred beach- and dune-sand samples in the Florida area. The simple equipment required and the techniques involved are described. Other data show that the method is relatively insensitive to variations in the mineralogical content or size distribution of the mixed heavy minerals contained in the samples tested. A modification of this procedure, found to be suitable for plant use in determining the relative purity of heavy-mineral flotation concentrates, is also described. A specific application is determination of the amount of feldspar-quartz in spodumene flotation concentrates. The results of the rapid evaluation techniques closely approximate those obtained by more precise laboratory procedures.

Research on coal cutting at the Bureau of Mines Twin Cities Research Center (TCRC) has evolved from a purely mechanical approach, specifically to reduce dust or frictional methane ignitions, into an understanding of the complexity of the cutting system relationships. Achieving an understanding of these relationships requires a wide variety of testing techniques and equipment. Laboratory facilities and the associated equipment exist for shallow to deep cutting in both coal and coal-inclusive rock with any desired bit type. Research efforts with this equipment are providing insight for significant advances to help solve the problems of pneumoconiosis and frictional ignition. This effort will ultimately affect both respirable dust and methane ignitions at the face through better bit design and will increase the salable percent of run-of-mine (ROM) coal processed. It will also affect the design of rotary-drum cutting continuous mining machines (CMM) and longwall machines. This report describes the main features of the coal cutting research facilities at TCRC.

A centrifugal float-and-sink test procedure has been developed by the Bureau of Mines to reduce the time for the gravimetric separation of coals finer than l4-mesh from as long as 24 hours to less than 1 hour. Comparative tests indicated that centrifuging a minus 14-mesh Pittsburgh-bed coal for 20 minutes at 1,500 revolutions per minute produced results that compared favorably with static float-and-sink test results. Standard deviations of the mean recovery and ash content of the float obtained centrifugally ranged from 1.31 and 0.04 percent, respectively, at 1.30 specific gravity to 0.21 and 0.05 percent, respectively, at 1.60 specific gravity. As in static separations, retreatment of the products separated at low specific gravities was required.

The old fatalistic idea that industrial accidents were a necessary part of industry and that little, if anything, could be done about them has been succeeded by realization that a majority of the hazards causing these accidents were man-made and that if they could be recognized most of them could be eliminated and the accidents prevented. Recognition of these facts has brought about substantial reduction of accidents in many coal dines, as well as in other industries. Knowledge of the hazards and their elimination has been obtained largely through a study of individual accidents and the causes which led up to them. With this thought in mind tae available data on coal-mine explosions in Illinois were studied.

Carbon number distributions were obtained for tar acid fractions from five low-temperature tars by low-ionizing voltage mass spectrometry. Quantitative data for phenols representing seven structural compound types were examined by statistical analysis. It was shown that for the phenols discussed, the data could be represented by regression equations expressing phenolic concentration as a function of the reciprocal of the carbon number and the carbon-to-hydrogen ratio of the parent coal. The total concentration of each structural type present was found to depend on the molecular weight and boiling point of the initial member of the group. Carbon distribution data for the tar acid fractions studied support the view that low-temperature tars contain the same chemical compounds but in different proportions.

"In this paper, the current status of respirable dust control in coal mine atmospheres is presented. The advancements in the engineering control of dust generation and entrainment, and of reducing the exposures are summarized. The results of the Health Surveillance Program are briefly reviewed. The results of research conducted in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust are presented. The 1995 NIOSH criteria document on respirable coal mine dust is briefly reviewed. The fundamental scientific and engineering issues in need of research are discussed. A detailed bibliography is attached.IntroductionFor coal mines in the United States, the current permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 2mg/m3MRE-equivalent concentration (an 8-hour TWA concentration measured gravimetrically) was established by Public Law 91-173: the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety of 1969 (the 1969 Coal Act). This standard is reduced when the respirable quartz content in the dust sample exceeds 5%; the reduced standard in mglm3 is obtained by dividing 10 by the percent quartz. The OSHA and ACGIB PEL for respirable coal mine dust is also 2 mg/m3 , and OSHA PEL for respirable quartz is 100 µg/m3 . The 1969 Coal Act also prescribed two activities in the Coal Mine Respirable Dust Sampling Program and the National Coal Workers' Health Surveillance Program n to control respirable dust in mines, and the coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP) among the coal miners.There are three principal methods by which personal exposures to respirable dust are controlled. The first is engineering control where the aim is to reduce the concentration in the mine atmosphere to or below the mandated level. The second is the provision of personal protective devices which allow the miner to work in dusty atmospheres without increasing personal exposure. The third is the use of administrative controls where the miner's exposure is controlled through work schedules and procedures to keep miner exposure at or under the mandated levels. The 1969 Coal Act specifically prohibits the use of respirators in lieu of environmental control. The compliance sampling program essentially does not give any credit to the use of administrative controls."

The basic character of the free energy r data relating to water and the oxides of carbon makes it desirable that the most representative values that can be obtained should be constantly available. The calculations of Lewis and Randall3 retain much of their of original value, but appear to require some modification in the light of more recent work. This paper has been written to incorporate the newer information and to present some estimate of the reliability of the resulting figures. The data upon which the calculations are mainly based are, for these substances, the equilibrium constants of the various reactions involved. The original work relating to these equilibria has, been reviewed and, where possible, weighted to correspond with its probable reliability. The differences in the results of the present from the earlier calculations are partly the consequence of this appraisal and partly of the inclusion of more extensive data, as will be indicated in detail in the succeeding sections.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine the feasibility of joining refractory metal compounds to each other and to oxide ceramics by a vacuum hot press-diffusion bonding method. Very satisfactory joins were made of ZrC to ZrB2, ZrN to ZrB2, ZrC to ZrN, and of ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 to Al203. Each of these join assemblies contained a mixture layer comprising 50 weight-percent each of the two end compounds. The mixture layer, sandwiched between each end compound, enhanced bonding and smoothed out the thermal expansion gradient between the two end members. Strength and thermal shock tests showed that the join areas of the ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 joins were stronger and more shock resistant than the parent materials. Also included in the joining tests was one each of TiC to TiB2, TiC to TiN, TiB2 to TIN, and TiC to ZrB2 joins. Each of these was well bonded, showing that the vacuum-hot-press method can be used for a variety of systems.

The production operation of a Kerpely gas producer at Louisiana, Mo., is described. This unit, originally designed for airblown operation was modified to permit using oxygen in the blast in place of air. The first runs J for test purposes, were made in June 1950. After this, seven production runs were made and these are the subject of this report. Total gasification time was 245 days. In each run, Nut or Pea coke or mixtures of both at a rate varying from 1,700 to 2,300 pounds per hour was converted with oxygen and saturated steam to produce synthesis gas - primarily carbon monoxide and hydrogen -approximating a predetermined rate of 80,000 to 95,000 cu. ft. per hour and a predetermined hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratio, The requirements per 1,000 std. cu. ft. of (CO + H2) were 21.6 to 30 pounds of coke, 213 to 267 std. cu. ft. of oxygen, and 3L4 to 47.B pounds of steam.

Permissible electric nine lamps are approved with the. understanding that if actively marketed they will be listed in Bureau of Mines publications so that state mine departments, compensation bureaus, mine operators, miners, and others interested in safety equipment for mines may know the permissible lamps available and the important safety features of each. The last list of permissible electric mine lamps was issued as Report of Investigations 33045 in June 1936, a supplement to Bulletin 332.6 All lamps described in Bulletin 332 are either obsolete or have been materially modified, as covered by extensions of the original approvals. These modified lamps and the new designs approved since 1930-totaling 12 cap lamps and 23 lamps of miscellaneous types-comprise the present list of actively marketed permissible electric mine lamps. This bulletin presents the Bureau's test requirements and procedure relative to permissible electric mine lamps and describes briefly the lamps, giving tabulated details of each.

"INTRODUCTIONPlatelet-activating factor (P AF) has been shown to mediate a broad range of biologic activities (1). Chemical analysis has shown that PAF is a glycerophospholipid with a choline polar head group, an ester-linked acyl chain at the second carbon of the glycerol backbone, and an ether linkage at the first carbon. The alkyl group attached to the first carbon can exist in a variety of chain lengths, with the C16 and C18 forms predominant in humans. The structure of P AF has been identified as 1-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphorylcholine (2,3).PAF can be released from a variety of cell types, such as basophils, neutrophils, and alveolar macrophages ( 4-6). Stimuli for the release of P AF include calcium ionophore, phorbol esters, chemotactic agents, and zymosan. In addition, endotoxin has been shown to be a potent stimulant of P AF release from alveolar macrophages (7).P AF has been shown to have a number of pulmonary effects. It has been associated with asthma since it can cause contraction of pulmonary tissue (8) and leukotriene secretion from leukocytes (9) and induce airway constriction when inhaled by humans (10). In addition, PAF is a potent chemoattractant and can cause migration ofneutrophils into the airspaces of the lungs (11,12). Endotoxin is a lipopolysaccharide-protein complex derived from the cell walls of gram-negative bacteria. I.PS is the lipopolysaccharide portion of endotoxin. LPS contains four covalently joined subunits: lipid A, 3-deoxyoctonate, a core polysaccharide moiety, and an 0-specific antigenic polysaccharide side chain. Rough LPS contains no 0-antigen side chain. The liP.id A portion of LPS has been associated with most of the biolQgic effects of endotoxin (13). This lipid A subunit consists of a D-glucosamine disaccharide backbone substituted with four fatty acid side chains. Endotoxin is found in a wide variety of occupational settings associated with organic dusts derived from plants or animals, such as cotton, cereal grains, silage, rice, and poultry (14-18). In addition, airborne endotoxin has been found in sewage treatment plants, composting plants, offices with contaminated humidifiers, and showers or saunas (19-22)."

Eleven are gelatinous, 56 are the granular type, and four are water-gel explosives, an entirely new type of ammonium nitrate-based explosive for use in coal mines. The list of permissible blasting devices comprises five Cardox models.

The Bureau of Mines conducted mineral investigations of the Peace Rock and Deadwood River roadless areas in Idaho, in 1992. Literature research was done by the Idaho Geological Survey. The study areas contain black sand placers (thorium, columbium, tantalum, titanium, uranium, and rare earth elements), gold, and molybdenum prospects. Except for unrecorded placer gold, there has been no mineral production from the areas. No mineral resources were delineated, but a multi-million tonne molybdenum resource is in the Big Pine Creek area and a 142 million m' black sand deposit is in the Stolle Meadows, Peace Valley, and Deadwood River areas. The Deadwood mine produced zinc, lead, and silver. There are six mining districts in and adjoining the areas; Warm Lake, Deadwood, Garden Valley/Lowman, Banner, Summit Flat, and Grimes Pass. Few claims, mostly placer, were active in the study area in 1992. The study areas are underlain by granitic rocks of the Idaho batholith. Most of the deposits are alluvial accumulations of heavy minerals weathered out of the Idaho batholith. Stockwork and narrow veins along shears account for the base and precious metal concentrations. Eleven prospects were examined. Workings consist of drill holes, pits and adits. Geothermal resources (hot springs) occur mainly along the Middle Fork Payette River; Vulcan Hot Springs is a designated Known Geothermal Resource Area. Sand and gravel resources are of local interest.

This report is one of a series describing investigations within the Missouri River Basin in Montana made by mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines Minerals Division, Region II. The primary purpose of these investigations is to provide information to agencies of the Department of the Interior and and others concerned with the planning of Federal power developments in the basin. The report contains such factual data as have been authorized for public distribution. The field investigations in Broadwater County were made during the late fall of 1948 and the summer of 1949. Virtually all known metallic mineral deposits and some nonmetallic mineral deposits within the county were investigated. However, some long inactive mines and prospects on which little or no information is of record may have been omitted inadvertently. Many of the mines and prospects have been inactive for extended periods. Most of the underground workings now are inaccessible. Because of such conditions, impressions gained by the inspection of surface features have been supplemented necessarily, where possible, by information obtained from Federal and State publications.

"The potential health effects of quartz-bearing airborne dust in mine and mill atmospheres point to the need for the quantification of quartz content in the source material for determining the source-sink relationships and for choosing applicable control measures. While a standard method exists from a regulatory point of view for the sampling of coal mine atmospheres for determining (i) respirable dust concentrations and (ii) the amount of quartz in the samples, there is no generally accepted standard method for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rocks. Generally, the bulk sample is reduced to a powder for producing quartz analysis samples. Extensive controls arc necessary to ensure representativeness of the analysis samples when these are very minute fractions of the bulk samples. Since the amount of analysis sample is not limited, alternative methods for quartz analysis may also be tried. It is, however, necessary to adopt a procedure which will satisfy several statistical requirements to guarantee representativeness of the quartz analysis samples.In this paper, the important factors in the preparation of quartz analysis samples from the host rocks and bulk samples are discussed. The method developed to prepare the analysis samples is outlined. The results of application of the procedures are presented. The procedure developed for quartz analysis sample preparation is based on sound statistical foundations. The procedure has been validated for reproducibility and homogeneity.The current methods used for quartz analysis in powders are the P-7 infrared spectrometry and quantitative X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Both have similar restrictions concerning the sample characteristics and operational problems, which arc intrinsic to radiation beams, device geometry, mechanics and controls of the radiation behavior. Although improvements can be made in the spectrometers and diffractometers, some of the most important steps are the procedures for analysis sample preparation from bulk samples and for calibration of the instruments. The sample preparation process is often referred to as one of grinding and sizing the bulk sample to generate the powder for the scanning devices. The particle sizes are referred to and their influence emphasized but the representativeness of the sample is assumed. Assuring sample representativeness during the sample preparation procedures is critical.For the sampling of airborne respirable dust in coal mines, the collection devices, the collection procedures and the analysis procedures are defined. This is not true for bulk samples where weights must be reduced thousands of times to generate the analysis samples for the scanning devices. The specifications to be developed may include bulk sample amount, sample reduction procedures, sample particle size distribution and sample amounts. However, the common problem of insufficient sample amount which is often encountered with mine airborne dust samples need not exist for bulk samples. Further, the same bulk sample can yield analysis samples for several experiments. The latter, of course, requires sample homogeneity.Three concepts are important in the selection of any procedure for sample preparation and analysis. These arc accuracy, reproducibility and representativeness. The adopted procedure has to guarantee a homogeneous sample representative of the population, a defined level of accuracy and reproducibility. Important statistical concepts are embedded in these requirements, particularly with respect to estimation and dispersion errors. Accuracy and reproducibility are totally different though not independent concepts. Estimation is related to accuracy and the true value. Dispersion is related to reproducibility and is measured by the classical statistical standard deviation of the distribution of a series of measurements or analysis performed over the same lot or analysis sample. This is a report on work done and results obtained in a minerals exploration program conducted by the Bureau of Mines on the lead-zinc deposits in the Ross Basin-Lake Como district, San Juan County, Colo., in 1948, 1949, and 1950. Four large veins--the Seven Thirty, Red Rogers, Cashier-Shorts top-Canandaigua, and Queen Anne--and several narrow spur veins were explored at relatively shallow depths with core-drill holes. Thirty-nine holes, totaling 10,491.5 feet, were drilled, and the core samples were assayed at the Bureau of Mines station at Salt Lake City, Utah.

A laboratory electrophoresis column was designed to separate pyrite from fine coal by utilizing an observed difference in the electrophoretic mobilities of the two materials in water. The apparatus worked well when tested with synthetic mixtures of coal and pyrite, but some modifications in design and procedure were necessary to provide a sharper separation. After these changes were made, the column was tested with a high-pyritic-sulfur raw coal sample. The column successfully fractionated the sample, removing not only the pyritic refuse, but a siliceous refuse as well. The invest ion demonstrated on a laboratory scale that pyrite and other impurities can be separated from fine coal by electrophoresis.

This paper presents the details of milling practice and costs at the conglomerate mill of the Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., Lake Linden, Mich., and is one of a series on milling methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The mines of the Calumet & Hecla. Consolidated Copper Co. are located in the Keweenaw Peninsula of northern Michigan. The mines of this district lie in a belt not over 4 miles wide and 100 miles long, which contains more or lees commercial ore. The Calumet & Hecla properties are the farthest north, except for the Seneca, of the operating mines. The district borders on Lake Superior, and by means of the Portage and Torch Lake waterways the largest lane vessels, can transport coal and other supplies from the lower Lakes directly to the company docks.

Research was done to determine if a hydraulically operated penetrometer developed by the Bureau of Mines could be used to estimate the roof-bolt anchorage capacity of mine roof rock. Tests were conducted both in the laboratory using cement cylinders and underground in shale rock. Hardness readings were measured by the penetrometer around the periphery of the bolt holes at the anchorage horizon. Roof bolts Nere then installed and subjected to an anchorage test. The results showed that the penetrometer readings could be used to determine the optimum stratum for roof-bolt anchorage but could not be used to make an accurate estimate of the anchorage capacity.
