As part of the Bureau of Mines methane control program, the Upper Free-port coalbed was studied in Fayette County, Pa., where this coalbed lies about 650 feet below the Pittsburgh coalbed and contains the largest remaining reserves of any coalbed in the county. Coal and overburden isopachs, structure and joint pattern maps, and a fence diagram were prepared using data from gas and oil exploration logs and coal outcrops. These maps will aid in deter-mining the need and/or feasibility of degasifying the Upper Freeport coalbed in the study area. Much of the coalbed in this area is under 600 to 1,400 feet of overburden. By correlation with data from the Pittsburgh coalbed, the gas content at depths of this order is estimated to be between 140 to 300 cf/ ton of coal, for a total of 190 to 400 billion cubic feet of methane in this coalbed in Fayette County.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the formation of boron and boron-carbide coatings by vapor-phase reactions. Optimum parameters were determined for hydrogen reduction of boron trichloride and for the fonnation of boron-carbide coatings on graphite by reaction with the depositing boron. At 1,300° C, about 85 percent of the boron was deposited. Tungsten substrates did not react with the boron deposit; other substrates reacted to various extents. The hydrogen reduction of boron tribromide was briefly investigated. Boron carbide was deposited at 1,300° C by adding methane to the boron trichloride-hydrogen feed gas. The chemical composition of the vapor-deposited boron carbide approximated B4C. A method of etching B4C was developed to study its microstructure. When boron was deposited on graphite at 1,500° C, very hard, uniform, strongly adherent coatings of B4C were formed that might be useful in rocket nozzle applications.

"Production of explosives for industrial use in,the United States during 1934 continued the upward trend begun in 1933 from the low-level output of 1932, and the output in 1934 was only slightly less than in 1931.Reports to the United Stated Bureau of Mines from companies engaged in the manufacture of industrial explosives showed that the quantity of explosives manufactured in the United States and sold during 1934 for use within the various States was 314,767,922 pounds - 23 percent more than in 1931.Production during 1934 included 39,207,845 pounds of permissible explosives 5 206,625,027 pounds of high explosives other than permissibles, and,68,935,050 pounds of black blasting powder of which 37,192,700 pounds were in granular form and 31,742,350 pounds in pellet form. These figures represent an increase over 1933 of 15.6 percent for permissible explosives, 30.9 percent for other high explosive, and 7.4 percent for black powder.Coal-mining operations were the chief consumers of permissible explosives; 99 percent of the total output in 1934 was used, in coal mines. The proportion used by bituminous mines was 59 percent and by anthracite mines 40 percent. Coal mining was likewise the principal consumer of black blasting powder, taking 88 percent of the total sales during 1934; of this proportion, bituminous mines received 78 percent and anthracite mines between 9 and 10 percent. Consumers of high explosives other than permissibles were more varied; the reports showed that 11 percent of the total quantity sold was for coal mining, 22 percent for metal mining, 17 percent for quarrying and nonmetallic-mineral mining, 46 percent for railway and other construction work, and 4 percent for all other purposes."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the wettability of bituminous and subbituminous coals before and after exposure to ambient air atmosphere, as part of an ongoing project investigating the coal-wetting abilities of surfactant solutions intended for the suppression of dust during coal mining operations. Exposure periods were generally 7 days or less, and the changes in wetting response were measured with a capillary penetration apparatus. Wetting solutions tested included a nonionic surfactant, two anionic surfactants, and pure distilled water. After exposure, higher ranked bituminous coals treated with nonionic surfactant solution and pure water showed increased wettability, but lower ranked subbituminous coals showed decreased wettability. With the anionic surfactants, the coals demonstrated opposite responses. The wettability changes appeared to be related to the coal moisture content. These changes may be amplified by specific, but incompletely understood, interactions between surfactant polar groups, absorbed water, and the coal surface.

One goal of the Bureau of Mines is to develop technology tp insure a dependable supply of minerals to the United States. To support this goal, the Bureau's Albany Research Center has modified a commercial atomic absorption spectrophotometer to rapidly determine trace levels of mercury by cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Such diverse materials as ores, mill products, stream water, sediments, and flue dust have been analyzed. A very high dynamic range of 0.2 ng/ml to 1 µg/ml of mercury in solutions is routinely analyzed by this instrument.

A method of error analysis has been applied to the location technique of non-linear least squares iterative inversion in order to evaluate the resolving power of several seismic array configurations with various assumed earth models and errors and inaccuracies in arrival times. The results obtained demonstrate that lateral accuracies of location are improved significantly when the depth of the miner is known. Lateral location to within 100 feet appears achievable in many instances. If it is possible to refine earth models significantly beyond what has normally been assumed in this work by the use of on-site data, or if the mine is shallow (300 feet or less), accuracies of-about 30 feet or so may be attainable. Inaccuracies in earth models of about 5% are found to contribute much more heavily to these location inaccuracies than errors of a few milliseconds in picking arrival times; however, arrival time errors of 15-20 ms or above will dominate these model inaccuracies. The expected accuracy of location is found to fall off very rapidly as the miner moves outside the array. The strength of this effect depends markedly upon the geometry of the array configuration and can be reduced by careful design. Also, as the size of the array is increased, expected location errors within the array are not altered much, but continue to match the error associated with the smaller array over a larger area (assuming that all stations can still pick up the miner's signals). Better location accuracy, especially with respect to depth control is achievable in an earth where the velocity is depth-dependent (increasing with depth) than in one which is homogeneous. Support of the immediate roof in coal mines is essential for their safe operation, and timbers are the most common means of support. Their effectiveness depends upon their resistance to decay. The theory has been advanced by some mine operators that rock dust, which is applied to ccal-mine workings to prevent propagation of explosions, accelerates the decay of mine timbers. As the results of part 1 of this study were inconclusive, the study was continued. Its principal objectives are: 1. To determine the effect of rock dusting upon decay of mine timber. 2. To compare the extent of decay of timbers in two mines in which underground conditions are similar. 3. To determine the loss in strength of the timbers after exposure to mine atmosphere. The studies were carried on in the Crucible mine of the Crucible Fuel Co. where the first part of this study was made, and in the Isabella mine of the Weirton Coal Co. The mines are on the Monongehela River and are adjacent.

The design of retort interchamber pillars is important in determining surface stability over in situ retort mines and to the health and safety of miners, particularly with respect to possible escape of heat and toxic gases from retort chambers. Stress distribution in retort interchamber pillars, roof, and floor was examined with the aid of linear, finite-element analysis using data from experimentally determined mechanical properties. Properties determined included elastic moduli, strength, and creep constants in laboratory tests on core covering a 100-foot depth interval in the oil shale from the Piceance Basin in Colorado. The most critical stress concentration was found in the rib side of the interchamber pillar at a height above the floor line of 1.25 times the width. Guidelines for pillar design that consider pillar strength, creep, and retorting temperature effects are proposed.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are the tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

This Bureau of Mines publication describes the hardware system and software package for the semiautomatic acquisition and automatic processing of high-resolution mass spectrographic plates. The semiautomatic data acquisition allows a tenfold saving of time compared with manual data acquisition. Automatic processing of the high-resolution data to yield exact masses, intensity, and the corresponding empirical formulas is accomplished by efficient programming on a small, inexpensive, programmable calculator system.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThe Brewer mine, near Jefferson, Chesterfield County, S.C., was originally operated as a gold mines as late as 1890 this mine was reported to have been one of the large gold producers in the southeast,Occurrence of topaz on the Brewer property was not reported until 1935, when it was discovered by Pardee and Parks. 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey while they were investigating gold deposits in the Piedmont province.During the 1940's the Chemical Engineering Branch of the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Electrotecbnical Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines at Norris, Tenn., investigated topaz from the Brewer mine to determine the possibilities of its use as mullite and for the production of calcium fluoride.From July 1950 through. April 1951 the Bureau of Mines conducted a diamond-drilling project at the Brewer mine to determine the grade and extent of the topaz deposits. Ten diamond-drill holes, totaling 2,344 feet, were completed, and 231 analyses of core samples were made during the course of the project.This report presents factual data relating only to the diamond-drilling project, The placer deposits on the Brewer property were previously investigated by the Federal Geological Survey 4/."

Data obtained in the Bureau's study of dust explosions of 313 elemental metals , alloys , catalysts , and ores comprising 54 types of material are summarized . Information is given on ignition temperature , spark energy for ignition , minimum explosion concentration , explosion pressure , rate of pressure rise , and in some instances , the admixed inert dust and oxygen concentration in an atmosphere required to prevent ignition of dust dispersions . The effects of particle diameter on explosibility and pyrophoricity are also discussed .

Surface mining drastically alters the ecological characteristics of the area disturbed and in some cases has a decided effect on surrounding areas. Vegetation is removed, topographic features and characteristics are changed, and the original geologic overburden profiles are destroyed. Spoil banks generally are a heterogeneous mixture of rock fragments, rock particles, and soil-sized material derived from the overburden strata. With proper mining techniques, the various strata can be partially or completely segregated. Segregation of over- burden material offers the opportunity to bury the toxic, acid, or salt-pro producing strata under growth supporting material. In some situations, lower strata may have more desirable characteristics than surface material and can be placed near or on the surface. For example, limestone strata appear in some lower overburden profiles that have shale and/or sandstone near the surface. Also, some lower strata have higher nutrient levels that have been leached from the surface. Experience has shown that natural revegetation is a very slow process on strip mined areas. Native vegetation may not be compatible with the environment on the mined areas, for example : 1. Low nutrients in the spoil. 2. Toxic spoils (very acid or highly alkaline ). 3. Surrounding vegetation may be of the climax type and may not have pioneer- or primary-invader-type species present. 4. The seed source may be to far away from the adjacent mined areas. Early attempts to revegetate strip-mined lands with trees also proved to be unsatisfactory as they did not provide the initial ground cover required to stabilize the spoil. Erosion control with trees only may take up to 10 years before the canopies close and an effective cover is established. They are slow to form soil profiles and do not provide effective chemical pollution control until long after planting. A quick growing cover of herbaceous species is necessary to obtain quick stabilization and initial protection against erosion by reducing runoff and rain-drop splash. The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine the relation-ship between geologic features and linears. Cleats, kettlebottoms, and roof rolls were mapped and superimposed on the linear plots for a coal mine in West Virginia. No clear relationships were evident. This may be due, in part, to the mining practice of leaving head coal, which obscures geologic features that may exist in the roof. Future studies should concentrate on mines where roof is extensively exposed.

This publication describes further research by the Federal Bureau of Mines in beneficiating domestic manganese ores. The ores selected for treatment were typical of many manganese deposits in California and Nevada in that they have not been economical to mine because they are low grade or contaminated with siliceous minerals and are not amenable to physical concentration.3 4/ It would be desirable to develop a simple treatment method resulting in nearly complete extraction of manganese from these ores and applicable to small-scale operations. Sulfation reduction appeared to be such a method. The studies reported in this publication were directed toward sawdust or lignin-sulfonates as reducing agents. Sawdust, as waste from lumbering, and lignin-sulfonates, byproducts of woodpulp papermaking, are comparatively cheap and may be available in areas where manganese ores are found. Sugar, oils, and coal were also tried as reducing agents.

Information relative to the explosibility of acetylene at elevated pressures and means of handling acetylene safely under these conditions is of considerable interest at present. American practice limits the pressure at which acetylene may be generated and distributed to poiIits of' use. The pressure in portable acetylene generators is 15 pounds per square inch gage. Tests made by the Bureau of Mines have shown that 15 pounds per square inch gage is too high to prevent explosiofiS of gaseous acetylene in the absence of air; in fact, dry acetylene gai can be exploded at pressures greater than 5.9 pounds per square inch gage. The Bureau has been interested in the explosibility of acetylene for many years because of its continued: use for illumination in many metal mines and its general use in cutting 1illd~--eldifigoperations in the mining maus-try.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds in Boone County, W. Va., as determined by the Bureau of Mines. It is one of a series describing the coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 6.3 million tons of coal was produced in Boone County, W. Va., in 1959, of which almost 5.5 million tons was mechanically cleaned in eight preparation plants. On December 31, 1959, it was estimated that almost 8 billion tons of coal remained in the county in beds 24 inches or more in thickness. Thirteen samples were collected from nine coalbeds and washability tests were made on these samples.

Few elements have received more attention and developed greater interest in the last ten years than titanium. The substantially pure metal has been din...ie. cult to isolate, and so far has been little employed oommercially, but the use af alloys and chemical compounds of titanium has increased markedly in recent years. The earlier attempts at preparing pure titanium resulted in various impure forme which, from their metallic appearance, were always mistaken for the metal. Hunter in 1910 isolated pure titanium by the reduction of titanium tetrachloride with sodium. This brief statement is issued by the Bureau of Mines in response to numerous inquiries which have been received concerning titanium. More complete in. formation on the metal may be had by consulting the referenpes appended. The Literature is voluminous and only the more important references are Riven. It has been drawn upon freely in preparing this report; also information was supplied by M. g. Hunter, Arthur Braid, M 1. Schmid, C. M. Johnson, N. B. Hoffman, and de Courny Browne.
