Misch metal was electrowon from a treated bastnasite concentrate in a REF3-LiF-BaF2 electrolyte at 950° C. The metal was prepared and tapped from a 1,000-ampere cell, and nearly 100-percent utilization of the rare-earth oxide was achieved. Prolonged operation in a smaller cell (40 amperes) indicated that the composition of the misch metal product was reasonably constant, and no significant increase of impurities, with the exception of carbon, was noted.

1. The Pittsburgh is the most important bed in Washington County from the standpoint of present production and recoverable reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 4,181 million short tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 4,132 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in some beds were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

This report, the second of a series, presents the results of laboratory corrosion studies which were made in connection with a one-year test on aluminum lease tanks conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines. Part I of the report contains the results of the field teats.5 The studies were made on an oil lease in a so-called "sour district," near Borger, Tag., where free hydrogen sulphide accompanied the production of oil, gas, and salt water. Steel tanks previously used on the lease had suffered severe corrosion, because steel is inherently susceptible to attack by hydrogen sulphide. Because of the high resistivity of aluminum to the action of hydrogen sulphide, it Was believed that this metal had promising possibilities as a material for the construction of lease tanks in "sour districts." The results of the one-year field teat proved that aluminum lease tanks will withstand corrosion by hydrogen sulphide, but it was found that aluminum was susceptible to attack by salt water, which was invariably present in certain portions of the tanks, and that hydrogen sulphide accelerated this salt-water corrosion in an indirect manner, as will be explained hereinafter. In order to study corrosion conditions encountered in the tanks during the test period, a laboratory was maintained at the site of the aluminum lease tanks.

In its investigation of old, abandoned, lead-zinc mines at which records of operations are not available, in 1914 the Bureau of Mines dug surface trenches anti', in 1947 It diamond-drilled three holes at the Albright Farm deposit in Sinking Valley. Some good lead-zinc ore had been extracted from veins in dolomitic limestone during the time of the American Revolution and as late as 1870. Since that time the only activity was sporadic prospecting and developing. Thu Bureau of Mines disclosed two additional veins by surface trenching, but diamond drilling failed to find significant lead-zinc mineralization.

Unfortunate occurrences resulting in injuries, loss of life, and destruction of property by explosion, fire, and other mishaps during shaft sinking in the past few years have focused the attention of the Bureau of Mines on the need for safety standards for such operations. Several States have some rules and regulations applicable to local conditions, and several Bureau publications (including some now out of print) cover the hazards that may be encountered in shaft sinking. Certain requirements of the Federal Mine Safety Code and Federal Coal Mine Safety Act may be applied, but there are no definite, uniform standards that will guide those desiring to sink a shaft safely and bring about uniform safety inspections.

Two methods were tested for separating sulfur compounds in certain petroleum fractions into types . Such separation is preliminary to identifying the compounds . Each method involved extraction of sulfides from petroleum sulfur concentrates . In the first method , the sulfur concentrate was reacted with methyl - ptoluenesulfonate to form sulfonium compounds from which unreacted portions of the sample were removed by washing with solvent . The sulfides then were recovered by heating the sulfonium compounds with anhydrous triethanolamine . The second method consisted of passing anhydrous hydrogen iodide into a n-butane solution of the sample cooled in dry ice , whereupon the hydrogen iodide adducted with the sulfides to form sulfonium compounds . These adducts separated as crystalline solids or , more frequently , as glassy viscous liquids . The sulfide was regenerated by adding water to the filtered sulfonium compound and was recovered by steam distillation or by extraction with pentane . These methods have been evaluated , using individual pure sulfur compounds and blends of sulfur compounds . They also have been applied successfully to separating sulfides from sulfur concentrates derived from petroleum fractions .

Illumination plays a critical role in an underground miner?s safety because miners depend most heavily on visual cues to recognize hazards. Mobile mining machinery, located in the miner?s peripheral field-of-view (±10° to about ±60° off-axis), may pose potential pinning and striking hazards. The main objective of this research was to determine if there were peripheral visual performance improvements for the detection of moving objects when using cool-white light-emitting diode (LED) cap lamps as compared to incandescent (INC) light bulbs commonly used in miner cap lamps. The cap lamp variable of interest is the spectral power distribution (SPD); the illuminances were normalized by a diffusion filter. The second objective was to determine if age is a factor for peripheral visual performance. This is important because the workforce is aging ? the average miner age is about 43 years old. Thirty subjects participated in the study; ten subjects each in the age groups of younger (18 to 25 years), middle (40 to 50 years), and older (50+ years). Visual performance was quantified by the subjects? speed and accuracy of response to detect the rotation of high-contrast (white) circular targets located 3.83 meters (m) away at -20°, 40°, and 50° off-axis. The speed of detection and the number of missed target rotations (accuracy) were measured. The prototype LED cap lamp results were best with a 11% to 15% improvement compared to the INC and LED cap lamps respectively. Age does appear to be a significant factor. For the middle and older age groups?, target movement detection time increased 75% and 60% and the number of missed targets increased 500% and 450% respectively in comparison to the youngest age group. The results also suggest that target location is a significant factor. The subjects? target movement detection time for the 40° and 50° target movements increased 16% and 69% respectively as compared to the -20° target.

Provide an improved, rugged, reliable, cost-effective automatic fire protection for mine haulage trucks. Approach Systems that automatically sense and extinguish fires on haulage trucks were designed, built, and in-mine tested. How It Works Temperature sensors mounted above the engine of the truck detect the heat from a fire while it is still small and controllable. A cab-mounted control panel warns the operator of the fire emergency and then automatically triggers the discharge of 60 pounds of multipurpose dry chemical extinguishing agent (from storage tanks through hoses and nozzles) into the engine compartment. If desired, the control panel can be field-adjusted by changing one resistor to delay the discharge for up to 60 seconds to allow time for the operator to stop the truck and shut down the engine. The system can be assembled with either pressurized storage tanks, or a combination of non-pressurized storage tanks plus separate pressure cartridges. This pressure source option is one of the improvements of this system over the earlier systems described in Technology News No. 11. Other improvements are a simplified control circuit and an improved sensor.

This work was conducted to determine a feasible process for converting siliceous fluoride offgases to a commercially usable product. The offgases were generated by pyrohydrolytic defluorination of low-grade fluorspar in a gas-fired rotary kiln, and fluorine was collected as a hydrofluoric-fluosilicic acid. A silicon-free fluoride solution for further processing was then produced by neutralizing the acidic scrubber solution with anhydrous ammonia, silicon being separated as orthosilicic acid. Ninety to ninety-nine percent of the fluorine originally present remained in solution as ammonium fluoride. Silicon was also separated from synthetic fluosilicic acids, having F-to-Si weight ratios ranging from 3.50 to 14.3. The solutions below a ratio of 4.06, the F-to-Si ratio of H2SiF6, containing dissolved silicon were desiliconized as completely as those containing less than the stoichiometric quantity of silicon. An electrolytic-grade cryolite was recovered from the ammonium fluoride solution by reacting with either sodium aluminate or alumina trihydrate and sodium hydroxide. A product containing 97 to 100 percent of the fluorine, represented by Na3A1F6, was recovered, and 94 to 99 percent of the theoretical yield was realized.

Interim performance specifications are presented for carbon monoxide, methane, and air velocity transducers used in the Bureau of Mines intrinsically safe mine monitoring system. These specifications give quantitative values or qualitative descriptions of the transducers, including environmental parameters and monitoring system measurement and maintenance requirements as recommended by the Bureau of Mines. Commercially available transducer modules and prototype modules are listed together with selected characteristics.

A semiquantitative spectrochemical method was developed and applied to the analysis of ash of U.S. coals . A low- temperature ashing procedure was used to minimize the loss of volatile elements . The analytical procedure provides for the estimation of 68 elements including major , minor , and trace constituents . Standards for the trace elements were prepared in a synthetic base mixture that approximates the average composition of U.S. coal ashes . Excitation was achieved with a d- c arc , spectra were recorded photographically , and interpretation was made by visual comparison of spectra of unknowns with spectra of graded standards series . Thirty- six trace elements were found in the analysis of 900 samples . Details of the procedure are presented , including sample and standards preparation , excitation and exposure conditions , spectral lines used , and approximate limits of detectability .

This report discusses the construction and use of an all-pressure psy- chrometric chart in which the requirements of simplicity of appearance and absolute accuracy have been waived, to a certain extent, to provide for the rapid determination of psychrometric data and for the rapid solution of air- conditioning problems of major interest to the mining industry. Many mines in which air-conditioning problems are important are situated at elevations far above sea level and embrace great differences in elevation - in excess of 8,000 feet in certain mines → throughout their airflow circuits. Under these conditions, the effects of variations in the pressure of the at- mosphere upon the physical properties of the mixture of air and water vapor of which it is composed are considerable and should be taken into account in the solution of problems. The simple types of psychrometric charts in common use, such as the Carrier, Bulkeley, Hill, and Goff (American Society of Heat- ing and Ventilating Engineers Guide), are not generally suitable, in that they are drawn for a single barometric pressure 29,92 inches mercury.

Objective To improve seats on mine shuttle cars with ergonomic design and by reducing shock impact transmitted through the mine vehicle seat to the vehicle operator. Background Operators of underground mobile equipment, particularly shuttle cars, are often exposed to significant levels of shock and whole-body vibration. Past studies have reported that as many as one-third of underground equipment operators could be exposed to adverse levels of shock and whole-body vibration. Moreover, seats on mining equipment, historically, are inadequate relative to the ergonomic needs of the equipment operator. In the extreme, amine vehicle seat has sometimes consisted of blocks of wood or a bent steel plate bolted to the machine frame. Also, the lack of sufficient vertical clearance in some underground mines is an impediment to providing adequate shock isolation systems on mine equipment seats. Approach The NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) is conducting research with viscoelastic foams to improve seats on mine shuttle cars. Viscoelastic foams were used in an ergonomically designed seat to reduce the amount of shock transmitted through the mine vehicle seat to the vehicle operator. Data on selected viscoelastic foams were analyzed from laboratory shock tests at PRC. Using information from the analysis, two ergonomic seats incorporating selected foam were constructed for in-mine testing on a shuttle car (Joy 21SC) in eastern Kentucky. The shuttle car operated in a 35-in-thick coal seam with an approximate mining height of 43 in. Operational data were recorded on the ergonomic and original seats. Further, the shuttle car operator was asked to compare these seats. Results When comparing the original seat (figure 1) with the ergonomic seat (figure 2), the shuttle car operator described the ergonomic seat as generally “much better” than the original seat. The operator explained. “It’s just easy to adjust. And it’s got the lower lumbar support. And the pad is thicker. It’s just much better all the way around.” He added, “It does support you more and [there is] less shock when you hit a hole...I liked the lower lumbar support. That’s where most of your shock is at, in your lower back.” The operational data supported the operator’s comments. In the full-load case, significant improvements in isolation were achieved(down to 15 Hz) with the ergonomic seat. Additional laboratory testing of seven viscoelastic foams was done to further improve the level of isolation from shock and better characterize the material properties of each foam. Data from this testing were used in an analytical model of the seat pan isolation system. Results showed that two of the viscoelastic foams, SUN-MATE EXTRA-SOFT and PUDGEE, gave the most effective shock isolation of the seven materials tested. A composite of EXTRA-SOFT and PUDGEE foams improved the isolation characteristics of the seat pan to approximately 4 Hz. Similarly, EXTRA-SOFT by itself provided isolation to 5 Hz. "The control of respirable dust in mines has been given paramount importance due to the health and safety implications associated with fine dust. The understanding of the temporal and spatial behavior of dust has been recognized as essential for increasing the efficiencies of the existing control techniques and for developing new control strategies. Mining-related studies in this area are, in general, limited. They are also mostly experimental. Some mathematical and computer analyses have been attempted. In this paper, first a review of the mathematical studies performed in the last three decades in this area is presented. Second, a mathematical model for analyzing dust flow in mines is proposed. The model takes into account a number of factors affecting dust transport. It incorporates varying dust generation source strengths and dispersion, deposition, and coagulation of dust in mine airways. Finally, application areas for the model are discussed. A computer program based on the mathematical model has been developed. The program will output the dust concentration in the mine atmosphere as a function of time and distance from the source. The amount of dust deposited on the sides, roof, and floor of the airway is also determined.IntroductionAn airborne dust cloud is a complex system containing particles of varied size, density, shape and state of aggregation. The behavior of the particles is dependent on a number of complex physical mechanisms, often opposing in nature. The net interaction results in the ambient concentration. This size dependent behavior of particles contrasts with that of gases, an area quite widely studied.The term aerosol is used to describe clouds of microscopic and submicroscopic particles in air such as chemical smoke or particulate matter released from smoke stacks. An aerosol system can be regarded as an arbitrary element of volume filled with gas and suspended particles of possible highly variable physiochemical nature. The parameters that are used to describe an aerosol system include concentration, mass average velocity and particle mass and radius. In characterizing such systems, several assumptions are made. Among these is the assumption that particles are smooth, inert and rigid spheres. Again, for example, when the particles are in transport, the possibility of collision exists. As a result of the collision, the particles may coalesce to form larger particles. The probability of sticking is considered a known quantity (lady, 1970). In this paper, the application of the principles used in aerosol systems is explored for the study of the transport and deposition of fine coal dust in underground mines."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a monitoring system that acquires and analyzes data for use in determining the conditions that may precede mountain bumps in coal mines. Based on a UNIX workstation linked to an array of geophones in a working longwall operation, the system captures complete waveforms of microseismic events and simultaneously obtains continuous samples of the voltage levels of each geophone. Event rates and locations are calculated and displayed in real time on the UNIX workstation, which is situated in an underground instrumentation room. These results also are transmitted from the workstation to a display computer near the longwall face. The system runs continuously and has the capability to acquire, analyze, display, and archive microseismic (transient) data and single point data, such as closure and pressure changes, simultaneously.

The equilibrium relationship of hafnium and tantalum was studied to facilitate alloy and property investigations . The data obtained are presented graphically as the equilibrium diagram . Alloys were prepared from high - purity components by nonconsumabletungsten- electrode arc melting . Data for the equilibrium diagram were obtained by optical pyrometry , metallography , X- ray diffraction of heat treated specimens , X- ray diffraction using a high- temperature camera , and differential thermal analysis . During the investigations , a casting apparatus was constructed , and the existing melting - point apparatus was improved . The bcc allotrope of hafnium forms a continuous series of solid solutions , called beta , with tantalum which exhibit a minimum melting point at 20 wt pct tantalum and 2,110 ° C. At 24 wt pct tantalum and 1,050 ° C , hafnium- rich beta decomposes in a monotectoid reaction to yield alpha and tantalum- rich beta . The monotectoid isotherm extends from 5.5 to 60 wt pct tantalum . The twophase region , in which hafnium- rich and tantalum- rich beta solid solutions are immiscible , rises to a maximum temperature of 1,265 ° C at 38 wt pct tantalum . The solubility of hafnium in tantalum decreases from 40 wt pct at the monotectoid temperature to 20 wt pct at 750 ° C.

Although the technique of diamond drilling was developed nearly 80 years ago, the use of this process as an aid to mining and other fields of engineering has increased greatly during the last decade , primarily as a result of the development of the cast -set bit , which now largely replaces the hand - set types , and of the use of bort instead of carbons . Since this transition to cast - set bits and bort diamond , many papers ( 1-14 ) have been written on the application of diamond drilling to various engineering problems . These papers contain , besides specification of the problems , some information on the labor and bit costs and a few data on drilling technique . These data , however , are subject to restricted interpretation owing to the large number of variables , which are not controlled in field drilling . Only one paper has come to the attention of the authors , namely , that by Sundberg and Lindqvist ( 16) , which reported a study of diamond drilling under controlled conditions . This paper was written early in the transition period, and the data and conclusions presented therein have had , without a doubt, considerable influence on the development of presentday diamond bits and In view of the fact that during the last 10 years thrilling procedure . have been new developments in diamond bits. and new applications of diamond drilling , a general program of research has been inaugurated to study the problems resulting from these changes .

The use of fire as a source of heat was the first step from primitive existence toward modern civilization, and heat has performed functions of inestimable importance throughout the ensuing ages. The first commercial steam engine invented in 1698 demonstrated that heat was an important source of power, and heat has since become the motivating force for railroad trains and steamboats as well as for machines in multitudes of factories. Aside from its function of supplying power, heat is an agent of vast importance in chemical reactions and engineering processes. Because of the high temperature of steam under pressure, losses by radiation from boilers and pipes become excessive unless the radiating surfaces are covered with insulating materials. Insulation is important also for hot-water pipes and many other types of equipment from which heat may radiate. Radiation losses from heated surfaces increase rapidly

An investigation of the hazard of spillage of liquefied natural gas (LNG) onto water is described. About 2,000 gallons of LNG were consumed in various tests. The initial vaporization rate of LNG following spillage was found to be 0.037 lb/ft2 sec; when the spill was confined, this vaporization rate was moderated after about 20 seconds by the growth of an ice layer on the water surface; when the spill was unconfined, a coherent ice floe was not observed and the vaporization rate was essentially time independent. The maximum diameter (in feet) of the spreading LNG pool was found to be given by 6.25 Wo 1/3, where Wo is the weight of LNG in pounds, Downwind of a natural gas source, time-averaged methane concentrations were given in good approximation by standard air pollution equations. However, peak concentrations were as much as twentyfold higher than average, adding an additional factor to the assessment of hazard. The effect of layering by the cold vaporized natural gas was similar to the effect of a temperature inversion on normal gases in the atmosphere. Small-scale explosions were observed on pouring LNG onto a water surface; no single explanation seems pertinent to all of the incidents observed.
