Comprehensive field tests were made in the Gas Hills, Wyo., to determine whether surface geophysical techniques could be used to detect and delineate faults in marginal uranium deposits. The tests were made on property owned by Federal American Partners, Gas Hills, Wyo., and included seismic refraction, self-potential, induced polarization, magnetometer, electrical resistivity, airborne infrared thermal scanning, and airborne photography. Of the several geophysical techniques tested in the field, horizontal resistivity profiling with electrode spacings in the range of 25 to 50 feet was most diagnostic of faults. The method is quick, cheap, accurate, and one that can be easily used by personnel employed by mining companies to detect and delineate faults.

This report, dealing with the separation of coal from its associated impurities by means of a pulsater-type jig, continues the series of reports that have been issued by the Bureau of Mines, in which detailed study has been made of the efficiency and mechanism of separating coal and impurities in various coal-cleaning appliances. The previous reports have dealt with the piston jig, coal-washing table, pneumatic table, and Baum-type jig. Such studies of the separation accomplished by any form of concentration device are essential and necessarily preliminary to any intelligent attempt to improve the performance of such equipment Object and Plan The pulsator-type jig was developed recently by G. A. Vissac. Although two articles(2) describing plants using this typo of cleaning unit appeared in 1936, both dealt principally with plant design and layout rather than with plant performance The object of the stork described in this report was to determine the efficiency of the separation made by the pulsator jig on a sized feed, the specific gravity at which the separation between coal and impurity was effected, and the influence of the specific-gravity composition of the coal on the character of the separation made.

This manual contains a step-by-step procedure for the design of ore passes for open pit mines. The manual is comprehensive and deals with all aspects including location, design, construction and operating considerations. In the construction section, all applicable raising and shaft sinking methods are considered and cost estimates and advance rates provided for each. The design process is divided into several sections - rock flow requirements, support design, dump point design and draw point design. Use of this manual provides open pit planning engineers with a means of designing and assessing the feasibility of ore passes for their operations.

The character of phosphorous-bearing minerals in the Birmingham red Iron ores and iron-bearing minerals in the Eufaula bauxite deposits in Alabama has been Intensively studied by petrographic, ore microscopic, luminescent microscopic, scanning electron microscopic, electron microprobe, and x-ray diffraction techniques. A total of 15 types of phosphorous-bearing mineral grains have been recognized in Birmingham iron ores by their characteristic sizes, shapes, and distributions. Size measurements, modal analyses, and texture analyses have permitted an estimate of potential liberation of phosphorous from the iron ores by beneficiation to be 27% In areas of previous mining and 60% in areas of current iron reserves. Fine grinding, selective flocculation, and flotation may constitute the best beneficiation technique for future research. Hematite and goethite are the most important iron minerals in Eufaula ferruginous bauxites, but pyrite, marcasite, and siderite are Important iron minerals in some varieties of ferruginous bauxite, and lepidocrocite and ilmenite occur locally in minor quantities. Although simple screening will remove the coarsest iron-bearing grains, research on the utilization of high gradient magnetic separation to reduce the amounts of iron-bearing grains is recommended.

Back injuries from handling materials in underground mines continue to be a major safety problem. In spite of the ingenuity of many people and the development of numerous mechanized aids, the number of materials-handling injuries remains second only to the number of roof fall injuries in underground coalmines. Relocation and repositioning of electrical cable, conveyor belt parts, and roof bolt sup-plies in particular are the sources of significant numbers of back injuries. To help reduce such injuries, researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are examining Mine Safety and Health Administration accident data to determine correlations between materials-handling tasks and the number of back injuries. Also being investigated are new technologies used in underground mines in the United States. Equipment is being developed or modified that would replace the necessity of doing lifting tasks manually. A Coleman manipulator was tested, and modifications were made to make it more suitable for underground mine use. To reduce or eliminate the need to manually clean off materials that commonly plug grizzly openings, a track-guided pincher arm device was developed. Oversized rock can be broken with the pincher arms in the up position, and the arms can be lowered to grab and remove debris. The arm can also be used in a sweeping action to remove cohesive fines that may bridge grizzly openings.

In this report, the Bureau of Mines presents a method for reducing the complexity of designing room-and-pillar mining systems by treating them as anisotropic soft inclusions in the surrounding ore or host rock. Theoretical models were derived for the calculation of the effective Young's moduli for these systems. The predicted behavior of the plate-type elements used in these models agreed well with test results from 21 plates each with 49 holes spaced on a 7 X 7 Cartesian grid. The plates behaved as anisotropic solids, the effective Young's moduli of which could be predicted from the scaled hole size and spacing. Actual hole shape was insignificant. The effective Young's moduli for simple mining systems are calculated in sample problems. This approach should provide information about field stress in the mining region and the stress distribution in the surrounding ore or host rock when the actual mining configuration is replaced by an anisotropic inclusion in a finite element analysis. The field stress within the inclusion can then be applied to the actual opening shape to determine the stress distribution within the mining region.

This paper describing the operations of the Cresson mine of the Cresson Consolidated Gold Mining & Milling Co. at Cripple Creek, Colorado, is one of a series of papers on mining methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Cresson has recently been the most, important mine in the Cripple Creed district. During 1932 and 1933 an average of 230 tons of new ore (excluding dump material) that averaged about $10 in gold was shipped daily; 150 to 175 men were employed. Stoping was by the shrinkage method exclusively. The ore was screened washed, and hand-sorted at the surface and shipped to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs for treatment. A considerable proportion of the production was made by lessees working under the so-called "split-check" system. This report on the mining and milling of tungsten ores is the second part of a general study of the domestic tungsten industry. The first part, comprising general information on tungsten, has been printed as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6821. The purpose of these papers is to increase efficiency in the mining, preparation, and utilization of the tungsten resources of the United States. The tungsten industry forms so small a part of the vast mining and metallurgical operations of the illation that private metallurgists have not had enough inducement to give special attention to the recovery of tungsten minerals from the ores, and many of the small companies are financially unable to undertake research work. A study of the milling of tungsten ores reveals that further improvement is possible, especially in the treatment of slimes. Recent experimental work by the Bureau shows that the flotation process is applicable to certain tungsten ores. The future of the tungsten industry it the United States depends to a great extent on utilization of the low-grade deposits of the contact-metamorphic type.

A solvent extraction procedure was developed on a laboratory scale for recovering trisodium phosphate, zinc, and iron from waste phosphate sludge as separate products. The sludge was dissolved in hydrochloric acid, and iron was extracted as ferric chloride by isopropyl ether. Zinc was extracted by di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid in kerosine. The efficiencies of the one-and two-stage extractions ranged from 98 to nearly 100 percent. Trisodium phosphate was recovered by crystallization from the raffinate. The value of two marketable products is considerably more than than the costs of the major reagent. The process was developed to permit recycling of values in this waste and to consequently reduce stream pollution from this source.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating surfactants added to water sprays to enhance the control of dust during coal mining operations. The objective of the present work was to establish the general applicability of adding sulfate ion to anionic surfactant solutions in order to improve wetting action. This was pursued through laboratory wettability testing of four anionic surfactants and one nonionic surfactant in combination with various concentrations of sulfate ion. The experimental results demonstrated that the addition of sulfate ion enhanced the wetting characteristics of all the anionic surfactants when applied to hard-to-wet coals, while easy-to-wet coal showed more complex wetting behavior. Sulfate ion in the presence of nonionic surfactant enhanced wetting only slightly or not at all. Surface tension measurements of the dilute aqueous surfactant-sulfate anion solutions indicated this property was not important in coal-wetting phenomena, as long as the value was below the critical value for coal. Sulfate ion helps surfactant reduce surface tension but primarily appears to affect wetting action by altering the adsorption characteristics of surfactant on the coal surface.

In recent years the issue of human stress response in emergency workers has begun to receive attention. This paper presents a rationale for considering human stress as a significant factor in the management of emergencies. It discusses the concept of stress, Critical Incident Stress in emergency responders, and introduces the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) process. It is suggested that, in a disaster, the CISD process can improve the effectiveness of response teams on site, their turnaround time on site, and post disaster time off the job. This paper, prepared by a US Bureau of Mines research psychologist, offers some ideas to the mining industry in general, mine rescue trainers, and more universally, to those responsible for developing emergency management plans.

This report presents findings from a Bureau of Mines study on barriers that may prevent miners from correcting and avoiding groundfall hazards. Such barriers stem from four basic types of problems: (1) inability to recognize groundfall hazards, (2) inability to correct groundfall hazards, (3) lack of motivation to search for groundfall hazards, and (4) lack of motivation to correct groundfall hazards. Data are presented that summarize the views of miners, section supervisors, and mine inspectors about the contribution of these barriers to groundfall accidents and what they think should be done to reduce the frequency of injuries sustained by falls of roof and rib. The report also includes a summary of miners' responses concerning their recent experiences with groundfall accidents, along with industrywide statistics on accidents and injuries caused by ground falls in underground coal mines.

As a part of a research program designed to help minimize national requirements for new mineral commodities by maximizing recovery of metals from domestic secondary resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated the development of economic methods for recovering copper and associated metals from complex electronic scrap. Three types were selected for research: (1) multiple-pin plugs and connectors, (2) obsolete aircraft radio assemblies, and (3) the magnetic fraction of shredded electronic scrap furnished by the Bureau's Avondale Research Center. The plugs and connectors, after incineration to remove plastic components and melting, yielded a brittle ingot, as did the internal portion of the radio assemblies. The brittle ingots were ground to minus 35-mesh for processing, and the magnetic material was used in the as-received condition. A process using pretreated or raw scrap as a copper precipitant in various concentrations of acidulated copper sulfate solution was developed as a means of effecting an initial separation and upgrading in the form of high-grade cement copper containing all or most of the precious metals.

This report presents the results of calculations of the equilibrium composition of the products of combustion with air of six different mixtures of octane CgH18, plus PbEt4 and halogen-bearing scavengers at three air-fuel ratios, at pressures of 5 and 30 atm., and at temperatures of 350°, 1,000°, 1,800°, and 2,000° K. The air-fuel weight ratio has the values 12, 15:12, and 18. The concentration of PbEt4, M, in milliliters per gallon of iso-octane, has the value 1 or 3. The chemistry involved in the microbial dissolution of iron and copper from such sulfide minerals as pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, cove11ite, and bornite is described. The chemical criteria used to evaluate the activity of microorganisms on these minerals were changes in pH, ferric iron produced, and oxygen consumption. In a series of experiments in which a ferrous sulfate nutrient solution was percolated over small portions of the above-mentioned copper sulfide minerals for 56 days, the iron-oxidizing bacteria Ferrobaci11us ferrooxidans and Thiobaci11us ferrooxidans were capable of bringing about the dissolution of 23.7 percent of the copper from chalcocite, 56.3 percent of the copper from cove11ite, and 29.8 percent of the copper from bornite by the microbial production of ferric sulfate which reacted with these minerals. Laboratory tests have demonstrated that pure strains of the iron-oxidizing bacteria act as catalysts to the ferrous iron being oxidized by the Oxygen of a system containing pyrite and chalcopyrite. In a series of experiments during which nutrient solution was percolated over pyrite for 70 days, the ferric iron produced by the iron-oxidizing bacteria was 112 to 120 times greater than that produced atmospherically.

[Coals of low-volatile rank cannot be coked without admixing large proportions of high-volatile cod in the used type of byproduct-coke oven, because they expend excessively and. exert side thrust, which ruins the oven wells. Some medium-volatile coals also give trouble. Since high-rank coals produce a strong, blocky coke, it is desirable to have the rank as high as practicable, particularly in the manufacture of foundry coke. Accordingly, it has become the practice to mix or blend high-volatile shrinking coals with as much low-volatile coal as possible and still have a mixture that mill not deform the walls or cause difficulty in pushing the coke. Occasionally, the safe limit of low-volatile cool has been exceeded and ovens have been damaged. It is desirable, therefore, to have a reliable method of determining the expending tendencies of mixtures before they are charged into the ovens. Furthermore, coal changes somewhat in its properties as mining progresses, end therefore, mixtures found to be safe at one time may cease to be so subsequently, particularly if nearly the maximum allowable percentage of low-volatile coal is being used. ]

The Munsch National First-Aid Instructors Association had its inception during the teaching of a Federal Bureau of Mines first-aid instructors' class at McPherson, Kans., under a cooperative plan of first-aid training. Upon completion of- the course on July 1, 1938 members of the class organized the charter chapter of the association under the name of McPherson (Kans.) District Charter Chapter No. 1. On July 1, 1941, 3 years after the founding of the association, there were 15 chapters in the national council -7 in Kansas, 3 in Oklahoma, 2 in Texas, 2 in New Mexico, and 1 in Arkansas. Although the pioneer work of the association was done in the petroleum industry, the plan will be of even greater benefit to a district in which there are various types of plants, mince, and operations of the mineral and allied industries. To determine the behavior of chlorine in coal combustion, the Bureau of Mines burned 10 chlorine-containing coals, high-, medium-, and low-volatile, in a laboratory-scale pulverized-coal combustor. At carbon-combustion efficiencies of 94 to 98 percent, 1.6 to 7.1 percent of the chlorine or an average of 4 percent of the chlorine in the coal was retained in the ash; the balance, predominantly hydrogen chloride, was evolved in the combustion gas. Sulfur retention in the ash ranged from 2.3 to 10.7 percent or an average of 6.3 percent, Addition of alkali and alkaline earth carbonates to a medium-volatile coal containing 0.27 percent chlorine by preferentially reacting with the chlorine increased the Cl/S atom ratio in the ash, Lithium carbonate addition at 0.43 percent and K2C03 at 1.59 percent increased the C1/S ratio in the ash from 0.2 to 0.6.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines study was conducted in eastern Kentucky drift mines as part of an ongoing research program to characterize the outcrop barrier zone. "Hillseams" were identified as the dominant geologic cause of roof instability unique to the outcrop barrier zone, with many roof fall injuries and fatalities attributed to them. Hillseam is the eastern Kentucky miners term for weather-enlarged tension joints that occur in shallow mine overburden where surface slopes are steep. Hillseams are most conspicuous within 200 ft laterally of a coalbed outcrop and under 300 ft or less of overburden. Hillseams form by stress relief, and therefore tend to parallel topographic contours and ridges. They can intersect at various angles, especially under the nose of a ridge, and create massive blocks or wedges of roof prone to failure. Examples of hillseams are described in both outcrop and in coal mine roof to establish their geologic character and contribution to roof failure.
