The application of secondary producing methods for recovering additional oil from known fields has been recognized for many years as important to the economy of the nation. One of the most successful secondary methods is waterflooding, which conserves our natural resources by preventing premature abandoment of stripper leases and revitalizing previously abandoned areas. Waterflooding as a secondary-recovery method was introduced into the Midcontinent region in 1931, and its use as such has become widespread. As with most new methods, the most favorable fields and leases received primary attention, whereas those with viscous oil or less favorable sand characteristics were bypassed. To ensure the stability ofa tailings pond embankment, the height of the phreatic surface must be kept at or below a safe level. In this investigation, the Bureau of Mines analyzed various horizontal drain designs for tailings embankments to determine their effects on location of the phreatic surface. This report describes the investigation, and it includes 21 dimensionless graphs that can be used to estimate the drain spacing and length dimensions necessary to ensure the stability of embankments of various configurations. Analyses were based on the use of two computer codes, a three-dimensional finite-element code and a two-dimensional finite-difference code. The computer-generated results were compared with results obtained from a laboratory embankment model, other laboratory test results, and piezomet-ric data from two actual tailings embankments. Nearly the same phreatic surface locations were predicted using either of the computer codes. For one of the actual embankments studied, the predicted phreatic surface location was slightly higher than the measured location; for the other, the predicted location closely followed the actual surface trend. Phreatic surfaces of the laboratory model were slightly higher than the code-gener-ated locations, and the differences grew larger as drain length increased or drain spacing decreased.

Since the discovery in 1935 by Adams and Holmes that certain synthetic resins exhibit ion-exchange properties, many applications of the ion-exchange process have been made. There are two general types of ion-exchange resins. Cation exchange resins adsorb cations from solution, and these in turn may be replaced by other cations adsorbed under certain conditions. 'Anion exchange resins adsorb acids from solution, and the anion of the acid may then be replaced by other anions. It is reported, however, that certain anion exchange resins have a low capacity for anions of weak acids without the necessity of acid adsorption either directly or as an intermediate step. The adsorbed ions may then be removed from the resins by elution with an appropriate solution, and the resin is prepared for the next adsorption cycle by regeneration with another solution. Sometimes one solution, is used to simultaneously perform the functions of elution and regeneration. The first and probably the largest application is in the field of water purification. Other applications have been made in the production of high-quality foods for human consumption, in the recovery of valuable substances from solutions, in the separation or fractionation of electrolytes, and in several other fields, each of which has its specific applications, variations, and possibilities. Ion exchange resins also have been highly useful in perfecting techniques of laboratory analysis and research.4/, 5/, 6/

"INTRODUCTION The investigation of the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes owned by the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. and the study of methods for eliminating these hazards, conducted by the Bureau of Mines, the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co. since 1929, was continued during 1933.From May and through December 1933 these tests were supplemented by a study of the manholes of the New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the Special Service Department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin, vice president of the Boston Consol¬idated Gas Co.The procedure of sampling manhole atmospheres and of shipping the samples to Pittsburgh was the same as that used heretofore. In previous reports the relative explosibility of the samples was calculated by adding the percentages of the illuminants, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, and ethane, dividing the total by 6.5, and multiplying by 100. Experience has shown that the factor 6.0 is more nearly correct; therefore, this has been used in calculating the relative explosibility of all the samples listed in appendix A and B of this report. This report reviews the phosphate deposits, mines, and industry, and prospects in 10 districts covering most of the Montana phosphate field. These districts are discussed individually, and an evaluation of the resources and potential of each is presented. Phosphate rock produced from underground mines in the Garrison district is shipped to Canada for processing to fertilizers, utilized locally for production of animal feed supplement, and pulverized and sold for direct application to the soil. Production from the Melrose district is shipped to Silver Bow and processed to elemental phosphorus. The Maxville-Philipsburg district is destined to become a major producer with the development of the Douglas Creek mine and beneficiation plant by Montana Phosphate Products Co. Montana ranks fourth after Florida, Tennessee, and Idaho in total annual production in the United States. Production him increased from about 60,000 long tons of acid-grade phosphate rock in 1940 to more than 660,000 tons of acid-, beneficiation-, and furnace-grade ore in 1961. Montana has the second largest potential resources in the Western field; in the area south of Butte there are approximately 1.2 billion tons of phosphate rock (+18 to +31 pct P2O5) available above and within 100 feet below entry level; and in the northern part of the field there are about 67.6 million tons available above entry level. In contrast to Idaho, most of the phosphate deposits in Montana are best suited to underground mining.

1. The investigation shows that nine coal beds have been mined in Harlan County, of which the Harlan and Upper Elkhorn No, 3 are the most important from the standpoint of present production. Of less importance are the Hindman, Flag, Haddix, Wax, Fire Clay, Armburgy, and Upper Elkhorn No. 2. The Harlan, Upper Elkhorn No. 3, and Upper Elkhorn No. 2 beds contain the largest remaining known reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 2,138 million short tons as of January I, 1932. Of this total, 1,956 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study, Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

Explosions are a type of mine accident that can be prevented by known methods ; however , they continue to occur because some mining people are still negligent in adopting and using the known and , in general , readily available measures for avoiding these disasters . Although the frequency and severity of explosions have decreased during the past 5 years there is still much room for improvement . Pennsylvania is an excellent example of what may be done to prevent explosions ; this State had an explosion record by no means good during the decade before 1930 , but by the adoption of readily available and not very expensive safety measures it now has almost entirely eliminated explosions . Pennsylvania bituminous mines now have the enviable record of not having had a major explosion disaster in considerably over 4 years . fact , many of our mining States are showing definite progress in working mines without explosions ; and some of these , like Alabama , West Virginia , Wyoming , and others now operating with few if any explosions , have had anything but a favorable record in the past .

This paper describes the methods and equipment developed at the Bureau's Experimental Oil-Shale mine near Rifle, Colo., for placing men in position to scale loose rock from the walls, pillars, and roofs of high stopes or rooms. The equipment developed at Rifle has application not only in oil-shale mining but in most of the country's underground limestone mines and in the exploitation of other mineral deposits mined in high stopes by room-and-pillar methods. Equipment in use at Rifle includes: 1. A boom-type scaling rig with a self-leveling platform constructed on a small "cat"-mounted crane. Men working from the platform on this machine can efficiently scale mine walls and roofs 27 feet above the floor. 2. A conventional fork-lift truck modified to provide a remotely controlled working platform from which men can scale to heights 27 feet above the mine floor. The platform on this unit is larger than on the boom-type rig and allows the men to inspect larger areas of the mine wall from a single setting of the machine. 3. A third rig, consisting essentially of a platform mounted on a tele-scoping tower, designed and built to elevate men 65 feet above the mine floor. Versatility of this machine permits men to work from the platform at heights of 5 to 65 feet. In the operating position, the unit requires a minimum clearance of 25 feet. In the nonoperating position the tower of the machine folds to an over-all height of 15 feet 10 inches to permit travel through haulageways. 4. An industrial gun, lightweight scaling bars, and mechanical scalers, which have been tried for removing loose rock from the mine walls with varying degrees of success.

The computer program described in this user's guide provides for the static, three-dimensional, linear and nonlinear analysis of structural and geological systems by the finite element method. The guide describes the capabilities and general features of the program and shows how input is prepared. A number of recent advances in finite element theory and computer technology are incorporated in the program. Nonlinear material properties are provided for, including isotropic, anisotropic, and time-dependent material properties, gravity loading, simulation of a sequence of excavation or construction, and a slip or joint element. The finite elements include beam, rod, axisymmetric and plane quadrilateral, hexahedron, thick shell, and axisymmetric and plane joint. The program also has an automatic mesh generator to minimize user input preparation for continuum finite element meshes.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research into the pneumatic recovery of coarse mica and has used this method to produce mica concentrates that contain more than 90 percent mica. This research is being carried out pursuant to the Bureau's objective to develop technology that will help maintain an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs. Researchers used a Bureau-designed system of crushers, screens, and zig-zag air classifiers to concentrate coarse liberated mica particles from mica-bearing materials. This pneumatic system was used to concentrate four mica ores from Arizona, North Carolina, and South Dakota and three waste tailings from Alabama, Georgia, and South Dakota. Using these samples, it was demonstrated that plus 65-mesh size mica can be effectively recovered by the pneumatic method. Not only were the concentrates high in mica content; it was also demonstrated that this method can be used to recover up to 78 percent of the mica that was originally contained in the samples. Because it is a dry concentration method, the pneumatic beneficiation technique may be advantageous in areas where water resources are limited.

To determine in what part and to what extent creep or movement exists in an installed rock-bolt anchor and the effect of the creep or bleedoff on the tension load on a rock bolt, as well as the effect of normal mining activity on the rock-bolt load and anchor, the Bureau of Mines conducted tests in the laboratory and in two mines using four types of expansion-shell anchors, the wedge bolt, and in one mine, explosive-anchored rock bolts. Specially mounted heavy-duty springs, calibrated to obtain load readings from spring movement, were installed on the test bolts to prevent a drastic reduction in tension load caused by slipping or seating of the anchor. A dial gage, reading to 0.0001 inch, measured movement of the anchor shell against the rock and seating of the anchor wedge plug in the shell. While all bolts had electrical resistance strain gages for load reading, only readings from the laboratory tests were used because those from the field tests were erratic. The tests revealed that most load loss resulting from static loading is due to the slippage and seating of the serrations on the anchor shell into the drill-hole wall. Dynamic loading, primarily from sudden shocks from nearby blasting, and possibly from ground movement or mining activity, will cause the anchor wedge plug to seat in the anchor shell.

In its program of investigation of deposits of strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines did some development drilling at the Douglas Deposit in an attempt to find an additional source of supply of copper. The deposit, which was opened in 1878, was worked until 1883 and is reported to have produced between 2 and 3 million pounds of copper. Heap-roasting and smelting and later gravity concentration were employed in ore reduction. Old slag dumps and tailing piles from these operations still remain. In 1917, the American Smelting & Refining Co., purchased the mine, and in June 1918 production was started in a 125-ton mill, using both tables and flotation. The mill was closed December 31, 1918, and soon after the milling plant Was dismantled and removed. The mine has remained idle ever since. The deposit occurs in a mineralized zone that follows the schistosity. The principal metallic minerals are pyrite) chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite) arsenopyrite, sphalerite, magnetite) slight chalcocitel and cuprite. To search for additional ore shoots and to prove the known ore shoot at depth, the Bureau of Mines drilled seven holes, which totaled 2,117.4 feet. No additional ore was developed by this work.

The number of natural-gasoline plants has shown a consistent decline in recent years, but the total capacity has increased steadily. The number of completed plants, as determined by a survey as of January 1, 1932, amounted to 959. Previous surveys of January 1, 1928 and 1930 showed 1,155 and 1,035 plants, respectively. Of the total plants on January 1, 1932, 859 were operating and 100 were shut down, compared with 999 operating and 36 shut down on January 1, 1930. The material gain in the number of inoperative plants in the last two years was probably due to the severe decline in prices of 1931. The low prices of 1931, which were approximately 40 per cent below 1930, made it virtually impossible for the majority of the independent plants, or plants not owned by a large integrated company, to operate at a profit. Accordingly, the majority of the plants removed from the list in 1930 and 1931 were owned by companies which were engaged solely in the manufacture of natural gasoline. The total daily capacity of the plants on January 1, 1932, amounted to 11,387,000 gallons, an increase of 871,000 gallons, or 8 per cent, in the two years 1930 and 1931. That the total capacity of the plants has increased while the number of plants has declined is due to the fact that nearly all the plants constructed in the last five years have been large plants. During 1931 the average total daily capacity of the operating plants was approximately 10,600,000 gallons, while the average daily production amounted to 4,944,000 gallons. This indicates that the plants operated during 1931 at 47 per cent of their capacity, compared with 58 per cent in 1930 and 61 per cent in 1929. Although more plants have been dismantled in Oklahoma in recent years than in any other State, it continues to rank first in number of plants. Apparatus for the analytical distillation of crude oils under an artificial pressure of 760 mm. of mercury has been designed and constructed. This apparatus enables laboratories at high altitudes to make Bureau of Mines routine analyses of crude oils with results similar to those obtained by laboratories at sea level. This is especially important for laboratories in the Rocky Mountain region, where barometric pressures of approximately 600 mm of mercury are encountered. During the past 30 years, the ?Bureau of Mines has made several thousand analyses of crude oils from various parts of the United States and from foreign countries. The first part (stage 1) of the distillation for the analysis is made at atmospheric pressure, and as most petroleum laboratories are near sea level, comparable results are obtained ordinarily. However, the increased use of the method by .laboratories at high altitudes has caused difficulty, as the analyses cannot be accurately compared with analyses from laboratories at sea level. For instance, laboratories at 7,200 feet generally report 2 to' 4 percent (based upon the crude oil) more gasoline than sea level laboratories. The use of the pressurized apparatus developed by the writers makes it possible for these high-altitude laboratories to duplicate analyses made at sea level.

This report describes a processing method developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to produce high-quality flake graphite from the steelmaking waste known as kish. The kish produced by current steelmaking practices is a mixture of graphite, desulfurization slag, and iron that is skimmed from the molten iron feed to the basic oxygen furnace. It is estimated that the graphite content of kish discarded by U.S. steel plants is more than sufficient to meet the total U.S. demand for flake graphite. That need is now filled by natural graphite from foreign sources. Kish was treated by a combination of screening and hydraulic classification to produce a concentrate containing greater than 70 pct graphite. Leaching of the concentrate with hydrochloric acid solution gave a graphite product with 95-pct purity. An optional secondary leaching operation with hydrofluoric acid produced graphite with a purity of 98 pet or greater. The flake size of graphite from kish ranged from 10 mesh down. Evaluation of test samples by industrial graphite users indicated that kish graphite is a suitable substitute for the natural material for most uses. A process flowsheet and material balance for pilot plant design are presented.

The use of highwall mining systems (Figure 1) has increased substantially in open-pit coal mines. It is used where overburden depth exceeds economical recovery. Highwall stability remains the major safety concern during highwall mining. The Mine Safety and Health Administration requires highwall mining operators to follow ground control plans that specify the pillar sizes necessary to prevent a pillar collapse that would threaten highwall stability.

Molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium were found by the Bureau of Mines to possess generally superior chemical and galvanic corrosion properties in many aqueous corrosive media at temperatures up to the boiling point. The corrosion resistance of vanadium in certain solutions was further improved by alloying it with such metals as columbium, tantalum, and titanium. was susceptible to a type of crevice corrosion in mercuric chloride solutions, but no other instances of crevice corrosion were encountered. With few exceptions, molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium were not adversely affected when coupled with dissimilar metals in galvanic corrosion experiments; in some cases one or both members of a couple were protected by contact. When exposed to aqueous ammonia spray at 60° C, all three metals were attacked, but they were moderately resistant in spray environments of substitute ocean water and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate.

This User's Manual, extracted from information contained in the Final Report for the above referenced project, outlines test procedures to measure the braking capabilities of underground non-coal rubber-tired mining equipment. Methods to interpret test results, recommendations for safe braking capabilities, and basic techniques to improve braking systems and road surfaces are also discussed. Possible applications for runaway vehicle protective devices other than braking systems are reviewed. Also included is a listing of mining equipment and brake component manufacturers who supply the majority of equipment to the United States non-coal mining industry. In conjunction with this list of manufacturers, a general tabulation of brake related specifications appears for vehicles observed during stopping tests conducted underground.
