These investigations were conducted to determine conditions for recovery of nickel and copper from Funter Bay, Alaska, sulfide ore and recovery of nickel from nickel-silicate ore, Nickel Mountain, Riddle, Oreg. Samples of Funter Bay cupriferous and nickeliferous pyrrhotite ore, were treated by beneficiation, roasting, electric smelting of roasted are for matte production, chlorination, leaching, and sulfatizing roasting with subsequent leaching. Funter Bay and Nickel Mountain ores were smelted together to produce matte. Total sulfide flotation, followed by magnetic separation of the tailings to recover entrained nickel-bearing pyrrhotite, resulted in the highest nickel recovery in beneficiation tests on Funter Bay are. Overall beneficiation resulted in recovery of 98.5 percent of the copper and 95.4 percent of the nickel in the concentrate that contained 3.5 percent copper and 1.7 percent nickel.

"This paper contains some new thermodynamic data for silicates in the series Mg2SiO4-Fe2siO4 and MgSiO3-FeSiO3 and gives the results of a thermodynamic attack on the problems of stability end parageneses.. Although some data are lacking satisfactory agreement with mineralogical and petrological observations is indicated.The use of thermodynamic methods in mineralogy and petrology has been rather limited, because accurate thermal data, especially for the more complicated and more important rock-forming minerals, have been too scanty to permit any systematic application to problems in those fields. It is, nevertheless, a fascinating task to investigate to what extent the mode of occurrence and the stability relations of the minerals and mineral parageneses, as revealed by petrological and mineralogical observations, agree with predictions of thermodynamics. At the present stage of development calorimetric data are needed for most of the abundant silicate minerals.Measurement of the heats of solution in hydrofluoric acid of minerals in the series Mg2SiO4-Fe2SiO4 and MgSiO3-FeSiO3 affords a ready means of obtaining their heats of formation from the oxides. Combination of such data with entropy and heat-capacity values gives a means of obtaining free energies of formation from the oxides, which, in turn, are connected di¬rectly with stability and paragenoses.The two silicates of magnesium, Mg2SiO4 and MgSi03, occur as rock-forming constituents as forsterite and clinoenstatite or enstatite. The orthosilicate (forsterite) forms a series of isomorphic mixtures with ferrous-orthosilicate (fayalite). The continuity of this series, suggested by petrological observations, has boon proved experimentally by Bowon and Shairer.4/ The present work shows that those minerals constitute a series of perfect solid solutions - that is, a series of solid solutions for which heats of formation from the individual pure silicates, Mg2Si04 and Fe2SiO4, aro negligibly small.The metasilicates of magnesium and iron also form an isomorphic series. However, this series differs from the forstorito-fayalite series in the fact that the most iron-rich mixtures, between about En10Fs90 and pure Fs, appear to be unstable with respect to the paragenesis iron-rich olivine plus quartz. The supposed instability of pure FeSiO3 as a crystalline compound, at least at high and at moderate temperatures, is remarkable, as no crystal struc¬tural reason for such instability is apparent. The present work indicates, also, that these minerals form a perfect series of solid solutions and throws additional light on the instability question.In the following, the samples used in this investigation will be described. For each of the natural olivines and orthopyroxenes, with the exception of sample L, a chemical analysis was made of the purified and actually used fraction. All the analytical work was carried cut by Oleg v. Knorring, and the specific gravity determinations, by moans of a pycnomctcr, by Oiva Joensuu, both of the University of Helsinki, Finland. The determinations of the optical properties were made by Mrs. Toini Mikkola, of the Geological Survey of Finland."

This document is the final report of a study aimed at defining the relative contributions of various sources of respirable airborne dust on longwall faces. In order to define the contribution of various primary sources, continuous dust level data were recorded on five longwalls for an average of five shifts at each. By analysis of these data with records of face activity, it was possible to determine the overall contribution of each of the major elements of the longwall system to overall respirable dust exposure at various face locations. Average levels were determined for roof support generated dust, conveyor and intake dust and for dust levels during various shearer activities. When average levels are compared between mines, a significant degree of consistency is noted. The next phase of the study was aimed at differentiating the various dust sources associated with the shearer. To this end 'fly cuts' varying from 6 in. to 30 in. were closely monitored as were dust levels at operators' positions over the various segments of longwall cycle. These data indicated that the clearance ring of the shearer drum as a disproportionately heavy contributor to shearer dust make. A statistical analysis of the effect of shearer haulage speed on dust make revealed that high haulage speeds are associated with low specific dust make.

The Roof Fall Risk Index (RFRI) is a new method introduced by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to assist the underground stone mine operator in 1) assessing defects the mine strata and 2) rating the relative roof fall risk these defects pose. The RFRI utilizes observational techniques to identify defects in the roof strata caused by local geologic, stress, and mining conditions. Assessment values for ten defined defect categories provides the foundation for estimating a range of risk conditions between 0 and 100 that define the potential for a roof fall. This paper examines how the defect information is collected using two field verification sites and proposes methods to analyze the RFRI data. These examples provide information on how well the method replicates observed conditions and how it might be applied in practice.

This paper describes mining and milling methods of the American Smelting & Refining Co. at the Morning mine in the Mullan area of the Coeur d'Alene mining region in Idaho and is one of a series of Bureau of Mines reports dealing with methods and costs of mining throughout the United States. The Morning mine has been described previously in a Bureau of Mines report published in 1930,2/ and the milling methods and costs at the Morning concentrator were presented in a Bureau of Mines report published in 1932. 3/ These reports are supplemented by this publication, which presents data to show the effect of changing times and conditions on a typical medium-size mining operation during the latter part of its history, when costs were rising and production was from increasingly greater depths. The report contrasts two periods in the history of the mine-periods not too far separated in years but considerably different in economic conditions. During the first period (1939) costs of labor and materials were moderate, mining operations were just being transferred from the main shaft to deeper workings opened from the offset shaft, and the operation prospered. During the second period (12 years later) production costs had increased following the national trend in all industry, mining was from greater depths near the bottom of the ore body, and the operation was becoming unprofitable. Mining on the lower levels of the property ceased in 1953.

Wellbore enlargement was tested using hydrazine hydrate in a gas-storage well in Ohio to increase the well productivity. The wellbore was to be enlarged by chemical disaggregation of the sandstone adjacent to the wellbore. Productivity immediately declined 49.1 percent and gradually declined to zero in 7 months. A down-hole camera survey showed a white-to-gray precipitate covering the entire wellbore surface. The precipitate was chemically analyzed and identified as mostly carbazic acid, a hydrazine derivative of carbonic acid. Formation of this precipitate was not anticipated; this viscous sub-stance caused the gradual loss in productivity of the well. The wellbore was not enlarged. Laboratory tests were run to determine what clay stabilization measures could be taken in sandstone cores to prevent clay swelling and particle migration caused by hydrazine hydrate. Normal clay stabilization methods did not prevent the virtually complete loss in permeability to hydrazine hydrate. Other laboratory tests using natural gas diluted with small amounts of carbon dioxide confirmed the ease with which carbazic acid could be formed in a hydrazine hydrate-saturated environment within and adjacent to the wellbore.

The tests reported in this paper were made in the East Texas field in the summer and fall of 1932 as a part of the Bureau of Mines study of the operation of flowing wells and reservoir performance; and to determine, if possible, the minimum reservoir pressure necessary to produce the wells in this field by natural flow through different sizes of flow strings. The minimum reservoir pressure that would be required to maintain natural flow through 2 1/2-inch tubing was determined experimentally for the existing energy conditions in the East Texas field. With the present available data, however, it 'is impossible to predict accurately or to determine by calculation the necessary energy requirements for maintaining the vertical flow of oil and gas mixtures under all conditions. Although some valuable data were obtained which seem to have application to the solution of problems involving vertical flow, this important research of the petroleum industry is so involved that more study of the complicating factors influencing the flow of oil-gas mixtures through vertical pipes is required. Versluys4 has presented a mathematical analysis of the vertical flow of oil and gas mixtures which covers the fundamental theories of the problem-although, as he points cut, there are factors, particularly friction, slippage, and solubility of the gas in the oil that must be mown or determined experimentally before the equations he has developed can be applied to actual

This report presents a complete qualitative picture of knowledge of the composition of petroleum as of April 1965. The material is presented in detai 1 on two imaginative maps--one, the Hydrocarbon Hemisphere, depicts the hydrocarbons that have been identified in petroleum; the other, the Heterogeneous Hemisphere, shows the sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen compounds that have been found. All compounds are placed on the maps according to boiling point. The accompanying text illustrates by structural formulas the several types of hydrocarbon and nonhydrocarbon compounds identified, presents some quantitative data, and points out the possible geochemical significance of a number of the compounds. The possibilities of the Petroleum World of the future are discussed as a function of needed research.

To provide technology that can help decrease the dependence of the U.S. aluminum industry on imported bauxite, the main ore of aluminum, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the extraction of aluminum from abundant domestic reserves of kaolinitic clay. Miniplant studies of the continuous leaching of calcined kaolin with boiling 25-pct HC1 acid resulted in a 93- to 99-pct extraction of the acid-soluble alumina in the calcined kaolin feed. Data are presented for an acid leaching study carried out in three or four continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTR) in series, feed rates of 100 to 250 lb/hr of calcined kaolin, and total nominal residence times of 0.7 to 2.3 hr. A material balance for a 176-lb/hr calcined kaolin feed rate in a circuit consisting of three reactors, four classifiers, and five thickeners is given. Data provide detailed compositional and physical information for calcined kaolin, process liquors, and acid-leached residue solids.

An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to the coal-mining industry's underground and open-pit mines that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) identified hearing loss as the most common job-related disease in the United States in its 1996 National Occupational Research Agenda. Previous studies by NIOSH have shown that operators of surface drill rigs without cabs are commonly exposed to A-weighted sound levels exceeding 90 dB. During hammer-drilling, A-weighted sound levels exceeding 100 dB were recorded at the operator station. NIOSH collaborated with a local drilling company to design and install a partial cab between the operator and the drill steel in an effort to reduce the sound level at the operator station. Sound level measurements in the field show the partial cab reduces the A-weighted sound level by 5 to 9 dB at the operator’s left ear and 2 to 5 dB at the operator’s right ear while hammer-drilling. This paper briefly discusses the preliminary design of a cab and the testing of materials for construction of the prototype. An explanation of the ideas behind the prototype design and fabrication are covered. Finally, the field test method and results are discussed in detail.1

Direct mass spectrometric determination of alcohols in the presence of hydrocarbons has not been possible because of the similarity of hydrocarbon and alcohol mass spectra. Experiments have demonstrated that by converting the alcohols to their trimethylsilyl derivatives, characteristic mass spectra are obtained free of interference from hydrocarbon ion fragmentation. Hexa- methyldisilazane is the reagent selected for the conversion, An improved method of preparing the reagent is given, Mass spectrometric determination of alcohols as trimethylsilyl ethers now is not only possible without prior separation from other materials, but the range of the room-temperature mass spectrometer is also extended to include the C10 alcohol region. Water does not interfere because it is converted to hexamethyldisiloxane, which has its own distinctive mass spectral peak, Experience indicates that other compounds such as glycols, amines, and phenols probably could also be determined by mass spectrometry of their trimethylsilyl ethers. Studies on the similar detemination of phenols in coal oils have been started, When mass spectrometry is not available, gas-liquid chromatography of alcohols before and after their conversion to the trimethylsilyl derivatives probably could be performed. The preparation and properties of the trimethylsilyl derivatives of 23 alcohols, 2 glycols, 3 amines, and 1 mercaptan are detailed. INRODUCTION During investigations by the Bureau of Mines at the Pittsburgh Coal Research Center relative to the development of Fischer-Tropsch processes, complications were encountered in the mass spectrometric analysis of alcohols in hydrocarbon oils. The general nature of the special constructional features that are required to provide safety from explosion hazards on machines approved as permissible by the Bureau of Mines is fairly well known to mining men who are at all interested in safety. These requirements are outlined in the schedules, under the provisions of which the investigations of such machines are conducted. Also, the method of conducting inspections and. tests of such machines has been described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, published in 1929. A more detailed knowledge of the special safety features of a particular machine is often useful and sometimes essential for inspectors, safety engineers, maintenance men, and engineers in selecting machines for a particular application. Three bulletins that give information of this nature have been published by the bureau, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotives and Power Trucks. "Decline of the Beehive Coke OvenTwenty years ago a favorite theme of the crusader for fuel conservation was the enormous waste of valuable by-products incurred in the manufacture of blast-furnace coke in beehive ovens. Indeed, there was good reason for arousing the national conscience to this needless' loss of an irreplaceable mineral resource. In 1910, 83 per cent of the coke production was made in beehive ovens, from which surplus gas, tar, light oil, and ammonia, aggregating in value (at 1910 prices) 40 million dollars annually, were discharged into the atmosphere.In 1929, proportions were reversed and 90 per cent of the production was made in by-product ovens. The average value of by-products obtained in the production of 1 ton of coke in 1929 was $3.60, as compared with $1.16 in 1910, although the value of a ton of coke had increased only from $3.47 to $4.80. As shown in Figure 1,1 the production of by-product coke progressed rather slowly until 1915. War needs suddenly expanded the demand for coke and the by-products benzol and toluol for the manufacture of explosives. Except during the depression of 1921, this accelerating rate of production was maintained up to 1929, largely at the expense of beehive plants. The 1929 production of 60 million tons of coke will probably remain a record-breaking figure for several years. The developments which are now in progress in long-distance transmission of rural gas and in the utilization of volatile petroleum products and refinery gases for augmenting, city gas supplies may retard an other- wise accelerating demand for coke and coke-oven gas for domestic and industrial heating, Trends in Value of By-ProductsThe increasing value of by-products in comparison to the value of coke is shown in Figure 2. In 1913, the average value of by-product coke was $3.38, the value of the by-products per ton of coke was $1.41, and the cost of coal per ton of coke was $3,27, In 1929 not shown in figure) the value of the coke had risen to $4.80 per ton, the value of the by-products to $3.60, and the cost of coal per ton of coke to $5.07. The by-product values in were 155 per cent higher than in 1913, although the coke value had increased only 25 per And the cost of the coal 55 per cent. Actually the increase or the total value of coke plus by-products in this period was very little more than the increase in the coat of the coal, being 55per cent for coal and 60 per cent for coke plus by-products."

Helium has probably aroused more varied scientific curiosity than any other single element. Discovered by spectroscopic examination of the sun during an eclipse in 1868, helium is now known to exist not only in the sun and other stars but on earth occluded in minerals, accumulated with natural gases in pockets in the earth's crust, and in the atmosphere surrounding the earth. Astronomers study its presence in the various stars of the universe for clues to their origin and history. Geochemists and geologists study its occurrences in rocks, minerals, and meteorites to determine the age of the earth and the manner of its formation. Pathologists study its effect on living tissues in search for the ideal combination with oxygen for artificial breathing mixtures in medicine, diving operations, and space vehicles. Chemists study its physical properties and use it to trace the sequence of events in reactions in which it does not participate. Geneticists and bacteriologists use it for special studies. Physicists study its behavior when liquefied and the behavior of materials cooled to nearly absolute zero by its use. Nuclear physicists learn more about the universe through study of the nuclear reactions that produce it. Through study of helium and greater knowledge of its origin and properties, science continues to unlock some of nature's more closely guarded secrets. Unknown on earth before 1895, and not discovered as a minor constituent of natural gas until 1905, helium with its simple atomic structure--a nucleus with two electrons orbiting in a closed shell--is a unique element. It is next to the lightest gas, only hydrogen is lighter. It occupies position number 2 in the Periodic Table of the Elements and heads the list of so-called "rare" or ?noble? gases. Most of the naturally occurring helium has an atomic mass of 4.003874 (oxygen = 16). A trace (1.7 x 10-5 mol percent) is the light isotope helium-3 whose atomic mass is 3.0169800 Unstable isotopes of mass numbers 5 and 6 have been authenticated. Isotopes of mass numbers 7 and 8 have been reported, but their existence is less well established. All the heavier isotopes are radioactive and are the product of nuclear reactions.

Aruba, formerly a. part of the Netherlands Antilles, separated on January I, 1986, and became an autonomous part of the Netherlands. Full independence of the island from the Netherlands is scheduled for 1996. In this chapter, however, Aruba's statistics are included with those of the Netherlands Antilles. Tourism continued to be the main industry of the island, which continued to depend heavily on imports, mostly from the United States. During the year, the Government was preparing legislation to regulate the exploration of oil deposits in the relatively shallow sea around Aruba.
