This Bureau of Mines publication presents an analysis of information related to the transportation of bituminous coal by unit trains and slurry pipelines. Even for short hauls from mines to markets, transport costs frequently account for between one-third and one-half of the delivered price of coal. Minimizing these costs has become an even more critical objective for hauls from the western mines than for hauls from farther east. Factors related to minimizing costs and transporting the western coal receive special attention. Although no general rule of preference is likely to be developed that can be applied to all shipments, both rail and pipeline service will be needed on an increasing scale. The study should provide useful background information and analysis for government and industry in approaching investment decisions in the mining and transportation industries.

A survey of the underground injection of steel processing waste pickle liquor (WPL) was made by Bureau of Mines engineers. Hydrochloric and sulfuric acids WPL are being injected into deep wells completed in the Cambrian age Mt. Simon Sandstone Formation in Illinois and Indiana. The Mt. Simon Formation ranges up to 1,800 feet in thickness. The average depth of WPL injection wells is 4,000 feet, and injection is mostly by gravity flow at rates as high as 4,000 barrels per day. The details of the design and operating history of a WPL well located near Gary, Ind., are discussed. Laboratory tests showed that the Mt. Simon Sandstone is sensitive to fresh water. The adsorption of iron and neutralization of acids by sandstone cores from deep wells and an outcrop were determined.

Thallium is one of the rare and relatively neglected elements that has recently assumed conspicuous importance. This element is widely distributed in nature but occurs in such minute quantities in most rocks and minerals that its recovery at present is only commercially feasible as a byproduct of other industries. World War II, with its unprecedented demand for products having special or unusual properties, led to a study of a number of the rarer elements that previously had been given comparatively little attention for one or more of the following reasons: 1. 2. Limited knowledge of properties. Small quantitios present in available raw materials. 3. High cost of concentration and recovery. Some of those rare elements, either alone or in the form of compounds, have already proved of such value for certain military and industrial purposes that their extraction from ores and waste products, oven at high cost, is fully justified. On the othor hand, further investigation of their character- istics, discovery of more adequato sources, and improvement in methods of con- centration and recovery would greatly broaden their field of usefulness and establish new and expanded industries. The current market for some of these elements exceeds the available supply. One of the functions of the Bureau of Mines is to study the properties of such elements in greater detail, locate the most promising raw materials from which they can be derived, and work out methods of extraction that will render the recovery of such elements more economical. The purpose of a serios of information circulars on the raror elements is to present in condensed form the facts and data so far available. This information may serve as a basis in planning more complete investigations loading to a full utilization of such elements.

This Bureau of Mines publication presents short-range projections of domestic liquid hydrocarbon production through 1980. Appraisal of future crude oil production was made by evaluating the relationship between primary and enhanced oil recovery and the total crude oil producing trends in each of the oil-producing areas of the United States. Future natural gas liquid production was generally estimated by projecting historical production. Estimates of production were prepared for each of the oil producing areas and summarized for the Petroleum Administration for Defense (PAD) districts and total United States. From 1975 to 1980, crude oil production for the conterminous United States is expected to decline from 7.8 to 6.4 million barrels of oil per day (BOPD), and it is expected to increase from 8.0 to 8.2 million BOPD for the total United States. However, these estimates do not include additional production expected from the Elk Hills field in California and the Yates field in Texas. If included, 1980 production for the conterminous United States would be 6.7 million BOPD and 8.4 million BOPD for the total United States.

"IntroductionRecognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries, Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs.To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made throughout the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous research studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984).The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter. The possibility of using ultrasonic energy as a tool to improve the electrolytic deposition of copper and zinc from several electrolytes was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Sound with frequencies of 20, 26, 38, and 400 kilocycles per second and acoustical intensities of 0.25 to 1.5 watts per square centimeter was employed. Measurements of cell voltage, anode and cathode current efficiencies, and electrode potentials were made at various current densities. Effects of ultrasonics on the quality of the deposit and on anode corrosion also was noted. In the electrolytic recovery of copper from an acid copper sulfate solution at 50° C., adherent, well-consolidated deposits are normally obtained up to a current density of 30 amperes per square foot. As the current density is increased above this value, the deposits normally become progressively more spongy and less adherent. Ultrasonic irradiation resulted in adherent and well-consolidated deposits at current densities up to 300 amperes per square foot. Radiation also produced smaller grain size and preferred orientation of the copper crystals. In addition, radiation caused as much as 3-volt decreases in cell voltages at the higher current densities. These decreases were caused chiefly by depolarization of the anode, although small depolarization effects were also noted at the cathode. Radiation apparently did not greatly affect cathode-current efficiencies, but prevented excessive anode corrosion at the higher current densities and resulted in more uniform corrosion. Ultrasonic radiation at a frequency of 400 kilocycles per second was not as effective as radiation at the lower frequencies. Circulation of the electrolyte at rates up to 5 percent of the cell capacity per minute did not produce results comparable to those effected by ultrasonic radiation. Rapid rotation of the cathode up to 1,800 revolutions per minute gave results approaching those obtained with ultrasonics.

One by one new metals come to share the burden of modern industry. Long before the Christian era potters and glass workers employed fine and costly blue pigments that contained cobalt. Cobalt blue class has been found in the tombs of the Egyptians and in the ruins of Troy, and many of the colors used by the ancient Greeks and Romans contained cobalt. The ancients, however, were apparently unaware that the colors they used were caused by cobalt, and it was not until late in the 17th century that the existence of the element was recognized, Writers in the Middle Ages referred to "cobalos" as an evil spirit that haunted mines and caused trouble to the miners. Subsequently the German worms "Kobold," meaning goblin, came to be applied to any baffling mineral and particularly to minerals that resembled ores but failed to yield metal when smelted. Even to-day there is something of an air of mystery about cobalt, and a medieval cloak of secrecy still surrounds many of the metallurgical processes employed in its production. "Zaffre" was mentioned about the middle of the sixteenth century by Biringuccio, and in 1735 the metal war, first prepared by G. Brandt. To preparation of cobalt compounds, however, must have been carried on in at least a small way ever since the opening of the silver-cobalt deposits of Schneeberg in 1470. By 1790 there were 25 works engaged in the industry, rust of them located in Saxony, but the total output of these works probably did not exceed 300 tone of cobalt annually, mostly in the fore of smalt. The smalt which contained approximately 6 per cent cobalt was sold in Venice in 1520 at about 16 cents a pound. A few refineries in Holland supplied the Irish linen trade, contributed a farce amount to the Dutch linen industries, and alto provided smaller quantities for the manufactuer of litmus in Holland. Mining coal by employing a method called longwall mining is gaining more and more popularity in the United states since it offers many advantages over the conventional deep mining methods. Those advantages are a higher productivity, an almost total extraction of the mineral since no pillars must be left behind for support, and an increase in safety since the personnel are protected by the shield supports and rarely have to work near unsupported, exposed root. However, on some longwalls, the dust levels liberated by various equipment such as belt conveyors, chain conveyors, crushers, longwall shearers, and moving shield supports can exceed the maximum permissible limits and therefore have an adverse effect on productivity. Many attempts have been made over the past years to reduce the dust liberation by changing designs, installing various types of sprays or scrubbers, treating the mine water with wetting agents, or even using foam to catch dust before it becomes airborne. In the year 1984, the Bureau of Mines awarded Eickhoff Corporation a contract to demonstrate a water-jet-assisted cutting system for the multiple purposes of reducing dust levels, improving bit consumption, and increasing material size. During the previous phases of this contract, various trials were conducted aimed to design, build, and test d shearer loader to meet the objective of the contract. In the early stages of the research program, it was expected to see a reduction in the overall power consumption of the machine due to the fact that the high-pressure water jet would pre-cut the mineral in front of the bit. This, in turn, would then reduce the bit wear. Since there is less cutting action performed by the bit, a reduction of the dust liberation and a reduction of product fines was sought.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYOverall red-ore reserves in the Birmingham, Ala., area were estimated in 1910 by E. F. Burchard 4/. Since then mining has progressed into areas classed by Burchard as ""unavailable for exploitation"" under conditions existing at that time. This is understandable when it is considered that red iron ore was valued at $1.19 a gross ton at the mine in Birmingham in 19102/ and by 1948 had risen 300 percent; 6/ that skips had replaced cars in slope haulage; that mechanical loading and rubber-tired haulage had replaced hand loading and mule or locomotive haulage; and that other more efficient mining methods had been introduced. Intensive study during the intervening 40 years has been given to ways and means for upgrading the low-grade ores in the area and combining or blending them with raw red and brown ores for improved blast-furnace feed.It is reasonable to expect that future progress in mining efficiency and increased knowledge of the beneficiation characteristics of marginal ores will permit extraction of red-iron minerals now considered uneconomic.The Bureau of Mines has undertaken to restudy iron-ore reserves of the Birmingham area to determine what tonnage and grades of mineral are present; what is necessary to make them amenable to mining; what further advancement is possible in beneficia¬tion methods; and where increased production may be obtained in the area if and when required. This study has been underway for the past 2 years, but research into the beneficiation of marginal ores has been in progress at the Southern Experiment Station for the past 30 years. Many results of that research have been adopted in commercial practice in the area. Other results have not been published but are pre¬sented here in condensed form as an important factor in assessing marginal deposits with respect to their importance as ore reserves.An interim discussion of the salient features of past history and progress, as well as the data developed during the years of research in beneficiation at this station and the present field investigation, will make for a better understanding of the present position as well as be useful in evaluating future potentialities. Discussion in this paper is confined to the main Birmingham Basin area, which contains the largest concentration of hematite ores in the district."

Lower accident rates were the outstanding feature. of the second annual sand and gravel safety competition conducted in 1930 by the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the National Sand and Gravel Association. Both the frequency and, severity rates for accidents were greatly reduced as compared with those shown by the first year's contest, that for 1929. Three times as many plants were enrolled, and the number of man-hours of work represented wad more than doubled. Seventy-six sand-and-gravel plants, situated in 20 States, participated in the competition, as compared with 26 plants, located in 13 States, in the year before. The number of man-hours of employment, which indicated the amount of exposure to occupational hazards, was 4,915,592 an increase of more than 100 per cent over, the previous year's total of 2.259,572 hours. The frequents of accidents declined from 74.4 per million hours for all plants enrolled in the first year's contest to 42.7 per million man-hours for all plants enrolled in 1930. The accident-severity rate was reduced from 9.7 days of disability per thousand man-hours of exposure in 1929 to 5.9 days of disability per thousand man-hours of exposure in 1930.

This circular presents the results of a survey of research on jet fuel thermal stability jointly sponsored by the National Petroleum Refiners Association (NPRA), Tulsa, Okla., and the Bureau of Mines. The development of supersonic planes has led to many problems that did not exist in the operation of subsonic aircraft. One of the most important of these is rapid deterioration of the fuel at the high temperatures to which it is subjected. At higher speeds, aerodynamic heating of the airframe imposes severe thermal problems, and conventional techniques of rejecting the heat to the atmosphere become impractical. The fuel is the only material present in sufficient bulk to be used as a heat sink. Thus, the fuel is subjected to aerodynamic heating and also is used to dissipate heat from lubricating oil, hydraulic fluid, electronic equipment, wheel wells, and cabin air. Consequently, the fuels may have to withstand both moderate temperatures for sustained periods in the fuel tanks and higher temperatures for brief periods during transfer from the tanks to the combustion chamber. Because of high temperatures, insoluble residue or gum may form in the fuel and contribute to heat exchanger fouling and to clogging of the fuel manifolds, nozzles, control systems, and other components of the fuel system.

Economic investigations indicate that bituminous coal can be mined underground in the Uinta region and marketed at a cost competitive with that of other energy sources in the West. A selling price of $3.90 per ton of coal was calculated from a cost analysis of a projected coal mine in the Emery coal- field of Utah. Although mines in some of the coalfields have extremely difficult mining conditions and cannot compete in the energy market at this price level, at least two other coalfields in the Uinta region contain coal reserves that could be mined and sold at a price of approximately $3.90 per ton. Projections by power companies and other coal-consuming industries indicate a strong future market for the large coal reserves in the Uinta region.

"In this report, we demonstrate that NF-KB, a ubiquitous transcription factor, plays an essential role in silica-induced inflammatory mediator production in the mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7. Compared to the effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), silica mediated a stronger activation of NF-KB p50/p50 homodimer at early phase of poststimulation. Furthermore, activation of NF-xB by silica and LPS appears to be mediated by different signal transduction pathways. Both silica and LPS increased mRNA expression in these cells for cyclooxygenase II, inducible nitric oxide synthase, tumor necrosis factor-a and interleukin- I a. This expression was attenuated along with the inhibition of NF-KB activation. It is well documented that exposure of alveolar macrophages to silica can initiate excessive production of inflammatory mediators and cytokines from several early response genes (1-3). At the DNA level, a common structural characteristic of these genes is the presence of one to five NF-lCB binding sequences (KB) in the 5'-flanking region (4-6). In resting cells, NF-KB is retained in the cytoplasm in an inactive form by binding to inhibitory protein known as hcBcx, hcB~. p 105 (precursor of p50) and p 100 (precursor of p52) (7-9). Upon cellular stimulation, these inhibitory proteins are proteolytically degraded or processed by certain proteases, which allows the liberated NF-KB to translocate into the nucleus as an activated form to initiate or regulate early response gene transcription by binding to its consensus element (GGGRNNYYCC)(7).In this report, we demonstrate that silica can efficiently induce NF-lCB activation in RAW 264.7 cells, and that silica displays different characteristic from LPS in the activation of NF-KB, both with respect to NF-KB subtype composition and the signal transduction pathway that leads to the activation of NF-KB. In addition, abrogation of NF-KB activation by inhibiting the protease can dramatically reduce the mRNA expression of cyclooxygenase II, inducible nitric oxide synthase, tumor necrosis factor-ex (TNF-o.) and interleukin-lex (IL-lex). These findings strongly suggest that NF-KB plays an essential role in silica-induced inflammatory mediator production in the monocyte/ macrophage cells."

The present and projected outlook for rhenium relative to its distribution and occurrences, the recovery factors involved in ore beneficiation, capital and operating costs, changing technology, and the projected uses and market growth of rhenium are presented in this report as part of the Bureau of Mines program to determine the availability of recoverable rhenium in a developing market.

In 1988, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 34,310-acre Diablo Mountain (Additional) study area (OR-001-058), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources and occurrences. The study area lies along the east shore of saline Summer Lake in Lake County, OR, about 145 miles southeast of Bend and 45 miles northwest of Lakeview. The climate is semiarid and temperate, and the study area is almost treeless. Geologically, the (Additional) study area is in a region of fault block-formed mountains and basins, characterized by interior drainage. The area is mainly underlain by unconsolidated Quaternary and Pleistocene lake and playa sediments, which may include subsurface evaporite mineral deposits and resources. Near the center of the eastern margin of the study area are an occurrence of dolomitic limestone of unknown extent, and an area of basalt outcrop totaling 1.5 square miles. A veneer of windblown sand covers about one-half the study area.

This report contains the results of tests performed on three large diesel engines to determine their ability to meet selected criteria of the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration Regulations for equipment used in gassy, non-coal mines. Study efforts were first directed toward determining the types of equipment expected to be used in underground oil shale mines. Three typical engines in the 800-1200 horsepower range were then selected for testing. Intake flame arresters, exhaust scrubbers, and water jacketed exhaust system were designed and built for each engine. During testing, each engine was evaluated for its gaseous emissions output, adequacy of the exhaust gas cooling system, ability to withstand internal explosions, and adequacy of the flame arresters. Surface temperatures of the engine and exhaust cooling system were determined under full load operation.

The Bureau of Mines investigated ground support problems in four major block-cave mines to assess the current "state-of-the-art" and to delineate areas for future research. The most significant problem is the inability of present support systems to hold moving ground. Further, as mining progresses to greater depth, this problem becomes more serious. Providing adequate temporary support capable of withstanding primary and secondary blasting is the next most significant problem. A detailed analysis of the effect of mining methods on support problems is also recommended for future research.

[Experiments were conducted by the Bureau of Mines on five types of simuated lunar rock (dacite, tholeiitic basalt, vesicular basalt, pumice, and uluth Gabbro) to study the effects of various simulated lunar environments n their strength and deformational properties. Specimens were tested in an ltrahigh vacuum (UHV) system at pressures ranging from atmospheric down to 0-11 torr and at temperatures of -130°, 20°, and 135° C. All tests were onducted with a servocontrolled testing machine. Rock specimens tested at 0° C in UHV exhibited significantly higher compressive strength and Young's odulus than those tested at 20° C in atmospheric pressure. The magnitudes f increase are related to the porosities and permeabilities of the rock pecimens; high porosity and permeability allow better outgassing and thus nprove surface cleanliness in UHV. The compressive strength generally ncreases but Young's modulus decreases as test environments change from 20° C i UHV to 135° C in UHV. No significant difference was observed in the iysical properties measured at 20° C in LTV and -130° C in UHV. Anisotropy i strength and Young's modulus exist both in UHV and at atmospheric condi¬'.ons with the same symmetry pattern. The orientations of the principal axes iy, however, change from the atmospheric to UHV condition. The results idicate that rock fragmentation in lunar environment will require more ergy than that at 20° C in atomospheric pressure.]

"INTRODUCTION The necessity for protection against the hazards of lightning manifests itself from time to time in the mining industry by reason of loss of life, damage to electrical equipment, fires in surface structures at mines, and accidents in the handling and use of explosives. This paper is intended to assemble, correlate, and present some of the salient points embodied in the available literature on the subject and at the same time give some factual data concerning instances of such loss of life and damage to property, with special application to the mining industry.The annual loss of life and destruction of property by lightning is considerable; the former may be prevented to a limited extent, though use of common sense as to exposure is required and not always followed; the latter can be prevented to a considerable degree. The manufacturers of electrical equipment, through improved types of lightning arresters, have done much toward the protection of electrical equipment, with consequent safeguarding of life and of property. Education based on unfortunate experiences has gone far to discourage the handling of explosives and blasting accessories during thunder storms, especially in open pits and quarries, and to a much smaller extent in underground workings. The lowly lightning rod plays an important role in the protection of certain types of buildings (especially isolated buildings), stacks, monuments, and other structures.LIGHTNING PHENOMENAIn 1751, Franklin proved that, lightning was simply a visible display of electricity - an extended spark; and until a generation ago little had been added to his exposition to define the various phases of the phenomenon.
