Most of the quantity of the water soluble xanthates, used in mineral flotation, is consumed in the process. However, the residue amounts are water contaminants downstream the mineral processing operations and can be toxic to aquatic biota at concentrations of 1 mg/L. In order to be able to discharge water from tailing ponds to natural water bodies the concentration of xanthates has to be decreased. The present paper studies the uptake of potassium ethyl xanthate by directly modified with copper and lead ions natural zeolitic rock, without passing through zeolite transformation into homoionic form. Modified zeolite exhibits high, comparable with powdered activated carbon of chemical purity grade, capacity to remove potassium ethyl xanthate from model wastewater, with pH in the range of 7?9 and pollutant concentration in the range of 10-150 mg/L. The pollutant immobilization is fast. Both Cu and Pb modified zeolite behave as selective with respect to xanthate in the model wastewater, and Cu-modified zeolite possesses higher selectivity. The big challenge at present and in the future is the economization of resources. This is applied for the whole industry but particularly in fields of mineral processing. The most important resources are energy and water. The shortage and price advance of energy is worldwide noticeable whereas the shortage of water is regionally limited at present. However due to the increasing world population, associated with a rising standard of living, water will become more and more important. Studies of the Unesco from 2001 indicate that the total water consumption raised seven times since the last 100 years at a growth of population of just three times. (UNESCO-Currier, 10/2001). This trend is going to be increased. While today more than 90 % of the humanity has access to clean water, in 2050 just about 50 % will be in the same situation. These figures indicate the importance of a gentle handling with the resource water. Further more the disposal of fine products, containing most of the water, is an environmental concern and in the future the mining and processing of raw materials will become important and necessary in desert, arid or permafrost areas. In these areas just efficient dry cleaning technologies will allow an economical beneficiation or better enable the processing at all. Most of the separation technologies with high throughput rates in mineral processing are based on wet processes. This applies especially for the separation of fines. Though there are some dry technologies available for the separation of coarse materials, like pneumatic gravity separation [air jigs and air tables], magnetic separation and not least sensor based sorters. Dry separation of fines is bounded mostly on cost intensive and low throughput technologies. The pneumatic separation undergoes at present a renaissance, mainly due to the development of the all air jig by the German supplier Allmineral. This newly developed sorting device yields good results in the separation of coarse to medium size material. All these facts and figures show the potential and motivation for developing an efficient dry separation device for fines. The following article delineates the development, performance and chance of a new dry separation technology for fines.

"Among the problems of the civilization development, a problem of interaction between man and natural environment can be highlighted. In the twentieth century the human transforming activity had got scales of geological processes and defined the contradiction between the goal to increase the quality of human life and possibilities of the natural environment. Last twenty-five years after the World Summit on the Environment (1992) indicate that the development of civilization is still based on receiving super profits from the natural resources exploitation. This statement is confirmed by economy globalization rates, growing contradictions between consumption and production, depletion and degradation natural environment. A new technological order is formed at the time of growing world population, technological capacities, organizational complexity, from one side, and global scales of geo-resources consumption, on the other side. Sciences, determining the further civilization development, should take on the task to change the social worldview, since the preservation of human population consists in remediating and maintenance of biosphere functions as a regulator of ecological balance. The new worldview in the geo-resources exploitation is based on the Ecological strategy of mining development, which consists in reducing mining-induced loading on natural environment while increasing efficient mineral production and processing, and providing for a comprehensive solution of tasks on mineral deposit development. One of strategic trend of mining development is to increase complexity and completeness of useful component extraction from ore and mining deposits while reducing wastes and decreasing their stockpiled volumes. The implementation of the ecological strategy has shown that the future is determined by reduction of the environmental impact while improving the efficiency of mineral mining and processing.INTRODUCTION The global nature of environmental problems caused by the scale of consumption of natural resources, huge amounts of waste, and intensive man-made impact on the environment requires a revision of the strategy for the natural resources development. Many existing technologies are ineffective in achieving the ultimate goal. Direct output in the raw materials - the end product technological chain rarely exceeds 10%, which implies a huge amount of work to move the soil. In addition, the feature of scientific and technological progress at the present stage is the growth of power-to-weight ratio."

"In the mineral-processing field, bioleaching of metal sulphide concentrates is currently operated in very large mechanically agitated tanks. Such bioreactors have considerable requirements in terms of power consumption for mixing, aeration and heat transfer. The use of slurry bubble column, where the particles are suspended by gas motion as well as by liquid upward flow, could be an alternative to achieve bioleaching in more economical conditions. In order to compare these two techniques, a unit of stirred reactors in cascade and a bubble column were comparatively operated at laboratory scale in the bioleaching of a pyrite concentrate. For both pieces of equipment, experiments were performed not only in batch mode but also in continuous conditions.Bubble column performances were significantly affected by unpredictable technical difficulties met to maintain continuous feeding in the bubble column and by a significant settling of the heavy solid particles. Nonetheless, theoretical kinetic data, extrapolated from results in batch conditions, could be compared to those obtained in continuous tests, in bubble column and in mechanically agitated reactors. These kinetic data were used to evaluate the influence of reactor design and configuration choice on bioleaching performances."

Water based paint formulations consist of some industrial minerals with quantities varying from 20 to 50 %. Quality of paint is directly related to these minerals used as pigment or filler in the production. Titanium dioxide is the most important and expensive pigment in paint formulations. Other minerals such as calcite and calcined kaolin are used as filler and mainly as a substitute for TiO2. Consequently, particle-particle interactions including adsorption, coating and size distribution of pigment mixture directly affects the paint quality. In the present paper, a new type of pigment mixture for possible use in architectural water based paints was developed through grinding. The effect of different types of grinding methods on physical properties of TiO2 and calcite mixture and the quality of paint produced by these mixtures have been revealed. Three different types of mills; conventional ball mill, vibratory ball mill and high-speed attritor were used for grinding of TiO2 and calcite. Viscosity, zeta potential and particle size distributions were used to characterize the pigment mixtures obtained upon grinding. The quality of paint was evaluated by standards based on both wet and dry paints such as viscosity, density, opacity and gloss. The paint produced with the pigment mixtures prepared in vibratory ball mill and high speed attritor showed improvement in physical properties particularly in the distribution and dispersion of mineral particles. "The paper covers the design and implementation of an industrial dense medium cyclone plant for carbonaceous iron ore, the proving of efficiency as well as the development of a predictive model for plant control. The VA Erzberg GmbH mines about 12 Mio.t of carbonaceous rock ore at the “Steirische Erzberg”. Due to increased demand of the Austrian steel plants, the production of ore concentrate was raised by 30 % up to 3.0 Mio t/a during the last 5 years. One of the projects to realize the increase in capacity at improved concentrate quality was the implementation of a dense medium cyclone plant for the fine size fraction – 8 +1 mm replacing the former dry permanent magnetic drum separators. By physical separation the siderite variety “spateisenstein” (42% Fe) of a density of 3,8 g/cm³ is separated from ankerite (10 – 17% Fe), the second iron bearing carbonate with a density of 3,2 g/cm³, dolomite, calcite and silicate bearing schists. The feasibility of the process was proven by the test results obtained from a test rig, that was constructed and operated in close cooperation between the Chair of Mineral Processing, Montanuniversitaet Leoben and VA Erzberg GmbH. The density separation surpassed the efficiency of magnetic separation clearly shown by •- values. The plant performance tests (capacity 120 t/h) verify the cut densities defined by Tromp T50 -values and the assigned efficiency found in the pilot tests at varied settings of media density, pressure drop, cone angle and apex diameter. The test rig as well as the final process will be presented. In order to create a tool to predict the performance of the DMS in the centrifugal field at various settings for varying feed composition the experimental results from size and density testing are analyzed in a modified way to obtain physically justified, smooth approximations for the performance curves. Models developed on coal washing plants are checked for their validity at increased densities."

The bioremediation capability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells was investigated for the biosorption of lead ions from aqueous solution. The various parameters such as pH, kinetics, biomass loading and concentration of lead affecting the biosorption process were studied. Complete bio removal of lead could be achieved for an initial concentration of 12.4 mg/L at pH 6.2, corresponding to typical industrial effluents. The biosorption isotherm followed Langmuirian behavior and the Gibbs free energy (?G) was determined to be-30.8 kJ/mole, indicative of chemisorption between the functional groups of the bacterial surface and lead. The biosorption kinetics adhered to a pseudo-second order model. The possible mechanisms of interaction of lead with the bacterial cells are discussed. A carbon paste electrode with a coating of biomass was developed for lead ion detection in aqueous solution using cyclic voltammetric technique. Concentrations of lead up to 5x10-5 M could be successfully detected using cyclic voltammetry, which could be improved to a detection limit of 1x10-8 M adopting differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). Molybdenite flotation is strongly depressed at pH higher than 9.5 in the flotation of Cu-Mo ores in sea water. Chemically sea water contains mainly Na+ and Cl- ions, but also some secondary ions, such as SO42-, Mg2+; Ca2+, HCO3-; etc., which are not necessarily indifferent for the flotation of molybdenite. The natural floatability of molybdenite in sea water and in NaCl solutions containing different secondary ions is investigated by micro-flotation tests. The tests indicate that the floatability of molybdenite in alkaline media in 0.6 M NaCl solutions is not affected by the presence of anions, such as, SO42- and HCO3-, at concentrations similar to those occurring in sea water. However, a strong depression of molybdenite at pH ranging from 9.5-10.0, is produced by the alkaline earth metal cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions), dissolved in distilled water or in 0.6M NaCl solutions. It was found that effect of Mg2+ions is significantly stronger than Ca2+ ions. Effect of both ions is attributed to hydrolysis and adsorption of MOH+ hydroxy-complexes. This is followed by subsequent precipitation of hydrophilic colloidal hydroxides at the molybdenite/solution interface, and in bulk solution.

The present research covers the results of experiments carried out with high frequency vibration screen on dewatering of coal fines. In the tests, the addition of surface active reagents was studied employing a high frequency vibrating screen. To increase the efficiency of mechanical dewatering processes, ultrasonic treatment was applied along with surfactants and optimum dewatering conditions were obtained. The moisture content of the feed material was from 82.5% to 41% by the optimization of operation parameters including the angle of the screen, vibration frequency, feed rate and screen opening size. Optimum parameters obtained in dewatering processes carried out with the vibrating screen were kept constant and the effects of surface active reagents and ultrasonic treatment on dewatering were investigated. Finally, the moisture level of the material was further reduced from 41.0% to 37.66%.

"Clays are present in a large number of mineral deposits and are commonly found as gangue. Its complex chemical structure, characterised by anisotropic surfaces, makes its presence a permanent challenge for flotation operations, increasing the reagent consumption, decreasing the quality of the concentrate, and changing the rheological properties of the system. In this context, the main objective of this research is to improve the floatability of chalcopyrite minerals in the presence of clays by using guar gum, a low molecular weight organic polymer, which acts as a surface coating agent for clays. Clay Minerals Society provided the kaolinite sample and the chalcopyrite sample was purified from mineralized rock specimens obtained from Ward’s Natural Science Establishment. Micro flotation tests were carried out in a 150 cm3 Partridge-Smith cell, using compressed air as the gas phase at a flow rate of 80 cm3/min. Potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) were used as a collector and a frother, respectively. The results showed that the use of guar gum improves the recovery of chalcopyrite in the presence of kaolinite because it induces the formation of clay aggregates that settle by gravitational effects, preventing the 'coating effect' and decreasing excessive collector consumption. pH played a key role in the guar gum performance, which was most effective at highly alkaline conditions (pH 11), where the copper recovery improved from 73% to 90%. The work has significant implications for the mineral flotation in the presence of clay minerals.INTRODUCTION The mining industry is continuously confronted with challenges that alert the sustainability of the sector. There is little availability of water, the grade of the deposits are getting smaller, and the gangue is becoming more complex. Usually, clays are part of the gangue in numerous systems, including copper ore, porphyry, nickel, platinum, etc. (Senior & Thomas, 2005). The structure is mainly composed of layers of tetrahedral silica (T) and octahedral alumina (O) that join in certain proportions: 1: 1 (T-O) and 2: 1 (T-O-T) (Theng, 2012). Also, they expose two crystallographically different surfaces: the faces, which tend to be negatively charged, and the edges, which carry a charge that changes from positive to negative depending on the pH (Van Olphen, 1977). One of the most common clays in copper deposits is kaolinite, whose structure is composed of an octahedral sheet of gibbsite bound to a tetrahedral silica sheet in the ratio 1:1"

"Grinding has a significant economic impact on ore dressing/processing, therefore the sizing of mills has an outstanding role.In most cases, the sizing of dry or wet mills for ore processing is primarily based on the determination of the Bond grindability index, using the Bond-Kjos-Rowland relations. In several cases, grinding takes place under conditions different from these and the grinding conditions have a great influence on the post-grinding process. This is particularly true for the grinding of bauxites where grinding takes place in alkali, often in higher temperature (up to 100 ºC) in alkali Liquor. So it is necessary to develop a testing method providing a reliable grindability index even under these special circumstances (grinding in alkalis medium at different temperatures) and allowing a more precise mill sizing. The new heated mill is suitable to determine the grindability index under temperature-controlled circumstances, in liquids with different temperatures (water, alkali). This paper presents in detail the equipment, the conditions (parameters) of the testing process for wet and alkaline grinding, the measuring results and the conclusions."

Over the last twenty years CETEM has been involved in the preparation and certification of reference material from ores, concentrates and related materials for use in analytical laboratories associated with mining, metallurgy and earth sciences. CETEM provides reference materials from mineral samples, not available from the existing sources, to meet the needs of the mining and mineral industry. CBPA-1 and CBPA-2 respectively are samples of copper sulphide ore and flotation concentrate, both originated from Sossego Mine, located in Pará State, Brazil. The batch characterization was carried out by a collaborative measurement program with participation of 20 industrial, commercial and government laboratories from South America, North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The certificates and report were issued in December 2007 (http://www.cetem.gov.br/ mrc/ing). The objective of this paper was to describe the procedures for material preparation and the collaborative approach involving a collaborative interlaboratory measurement program to certify CBPA-1 and CBPA-2.

Mechanism of the action of nonpolar physically adsorbed reactants in froth flotation is under discussion in the paper. It is shown that their basic influence on flotation includes removing of the kinetics restrictions of the flotation complex formation. Experimental data and practical evidence reported in the paper sustain the proposed mechanism. There are discussed potential dependence of the kinetics of dixanthogen formation on platinum and its influence on the induction time (IT).

"Faculty of Mining, Ecology, Process Control and Geotechnology, Technical University, Košice, Slovakia An industrial eccentric vibratory mill was used for direct and short-time mechanochemical reduction of ilmenite concentrate (FeTiO3) and anatase (TiO2) with magnesium metal powder in order to reduce Fe and Ti resp. and hereby to convert them to the more soluble phases suitable for further hydrometallurgical processing. X-ray diffraction analysis of FeTiO3 after 60 min of milling with Mg confirmed the presence of Fe0 and Mg2TiO4 phases and for TiO2 after 180 min of milling the new TiO and MgO phases have appeared. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has detected Fe0 (metal) and Mg2+ species which are corresponding to the product of FeTiO3 mechanochemical reduction. The product of TiO2 mechanochemical reduction has revealed XPS spectral lines corresponding to Ti2+, Ti4+ and Mg2+ species on its surface. Morphology of mechanochemically reduced samples was studied by scanning electron microscopy analysis. Subsequent leaching of mechanochemically reduced FeTiO3 and TiO2 was performed in dilute HCl and H2SO4 at 80oC and compared with mechanically activated samples. The recovery of Ti has reached 100% for FeTiO3 and 79% for TiO2 after 60 min of leaching. Based on this study the flowsheet for possible processing of natural refractory titanium ores patented by author was adapted and documented. INTRODUCTION Ilmenite (FeTiO3), along with rutile (TiO2) represents the most important titanium resource necessary for titanium industry, for production of titanium metal, alloys and pigment grade TiO2 which are becoming more important and versatile for various industries such as an aircraft and aerospace, navy, chemical, automotive, medical and offshore wind industries, for machine and plant engineering and architecture as well, mainly due to high corrosion resistance. Pigment grade TiO2 is utilizing in pigment, plastic, glass, paper and rubber industries (Zhang, 2011). There are obvious research efforts for development of the potential alternatives to the expensive thermo-chemical commercial processes of titanium raw materials processing. Zhang (2011) has summarized conventional thermo- a electrochemical processes which involved a combination of pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical and electrometallurgical technologies and highlighted the improved hydrometallurgical routes promising for commercial application in the future. Such improvement could also be mechanical activation of FeTiO3, TiO2 by high-energy milling which causes their structural disordering, the changes of physical and chemical properties, consequently and has a positive effect on the dissolution kinetics (Achimovicová et al., 2014a, 2017, Baláž, 2008). The various types of mills such as a planetary ball mill, a vertical ball mill, a drum mill, an attritor were used for mechanical activation of FeTiO3 as a pretreatment process for subsequent leaching (Achimovicová et al., 2014)."

The recycling of end-of-life concrete into new concrete is one of the most interesting options for reducing worldwide natural resources use and emissions associated with the building materials sector. The possibility to realize a larger re-use of silica aggregates from old concrete, strongly contributes to reduce environmental impact (reduced exploitation of natural resources, reduction of CO2 emissions, airborne dust production, etc.).To reach this goal, innovative processing techniques, as well as innovative sensing units and architectures have to be developed. In this perspective an analytical approach, based on hyperspectral sensing techniques, is proposed, discussed and critically evaluated in order to perform an automatic quality control assessment, finalized to maintain a high standard of concrete demolition waste, from the earliest stage of recycling to the further processing stages, according to the detected in-situ demolition waste characteristics. The paper deals with the analysis and the evaluation of the problems related to the integration of this approach with state-of-the-art demolition and building processes and procedures. Artificial vision systems are increasingly used to assist humans to perform different tasks in different areas. These systems are able to recognize patterns in complex images, which can provide multiple data. Currently, vision systems are used in both; monitoring traffic - which uses radars for vehicular plate recognition- as in metallurgical and food industries for strict quality inspections. Their use in mining occurs in measuring the speed of froth over the lip of a cell, in determining the shape and size of pellets, in obtaining from the tendency of mineral content and as a replacement for laboratory analysis of particle size. With this advanced tool, it is possible to achieve significant improvements in quality, productivity, and especially in reducing costs in pelletizing plant of iron ore. The objective of this paper is to contemplate the current situation of image analysis in the pelleting plants and glimpse at the potential applications that are being developed. This paper also presents the conception and implementation of an automatic control system of the pellets size distribution applied on a pelletizing plant of iron ore. The article demonstrates the strategy used for measuring the size distribution of the iron ore pellets, based on image analysis and the strategy implemented on advanced process control, which shows substantial gain on plant performance.

Cobalt-rich ferromanganese crust and nodule ores from seamount areas contain volcanic and sedimentary rocks as substrate or nuclei and these ores require mineral processing to remove the substrate/nuclei rock before smelting. This paper reviews the results of jig separation and air table treatment for the coarse fraction and flotation and hybrid jigging for the fine fraction. Using these techniques substrate/nuclei rock was removed from the cobalt-rich ferromanganese oxide components. The mineralogical properties and metallurgical treatment methods including hydrometallurgical treatment of low grade ore is also reviewed.

The Sydvaranger magnetite mine was shut down in 1996 due to low iron ore prices. It was reopened in 2009. The flowsheet has remained more or less as in the old plant, based upon two grinding steps followed by magnetic separation. The Sydvaranger magnetite is free of harmful elements and should therefore be sold on the high quality market. This requires a concentrate containing less than 2 % SiO2. In the old plant, this grade was achieved by amine flotation. Amine was preferred as collector because it could be used in process water from the sea. The use of amine has been restricted by the Norwegian pollution authorities during the time the mine was shut down. Test work to replace cationic with anionic flotation is therefore done. Research on activation of quartz with Ca or Mg ions prior to anionic flotation was shown by basic research in the period from 1960 to 1980 to be effective under simplified laboratory conditions. This old research has now been followed up from a practical/empirical point of view. The basic work was mainly done on quartz and iron minerals only. In this case, an actual feed containing a number of minerals common in iron ores is used, in order to demonstrate that a commercial process is possible. Calcium activation is shown to work excellently but requires too high pH to be environmentally and economically attractive. Magnesium activation is a more difficult process, because the maximum concentration of MgOH+, which was shown to be the activator, is about 100 times lower than the alternative CaOH+. Flotation success depends partly upon the ore, some amphibole minerals are more difficult to float than pure quartz. Ordinary batch flotation test work is time consuming. A South African microflotation test cell has shown promise, because work can be focused upon flotation of the more critical coarser fractions of the Sydvaranger ore. "The platinum group metals (PGMs) and associated minerals are particularly refractory to most traditional direct leach processes. However, the remoteness of many new ore deposits, socio-political risks, the scarcity of skilled labor and constraints on the availability of water and electrical power makes it increasingly more difficult to implement the conventional mill-float-smelt-refine process routes to extract and refine PGMs in remote areas. This paper discusses a process to extract PGM’s from low grade ore and concentrate using a sequential stage heap leach process entailing heap bioleaching and high temperature cyanide leaching, and evaluates the feasibility of implementing a carbon-in-pulp process to recover the PGMs from the pregnant leach solution. The heap bioleaching extracts the base metals in an acidic sulfate medium using a mixed culture of thermophiles. After heap bioleaching the heap is reclaimed, rinsed, agglomerated and restacked for high temperature cyanide leaching where the cyanide liquor is directly heated via solar energy in panels. Palladium, gold and platinum are recovered during the cyanide leaching stage. The pregnant leach solution was evaluated for potential carbon-in-pulp adsorption and subsequent elution similar to gold processing. The kinetics of adsorption and elution compared well with gold adsorption and elution."

"Previous studies described by Galvin et al. (2017) have shown that for Australian bituminous coal fines, both in batch and in continuous process, the new improved oil agglomeration procedure based on the use of high-internal-phase (HIP) emulsions, as compared to the conventional “pure oil” agglomeration process, enables a significant reduction in the amount of oil while reaching a high yield of clean coal (approximately 90% of agglomerates greater than 355 µm in size) in a significantly shorter time. The HIP emulsion used in these experiments comprised up to 95% vol. aqueous solution of sodium chloride (3% wt. concentration) and for the rest, a mixture of kerosene (oil) and sorbitan monooleate (SMO emulsifier) in a 1:1 ratio as a binder. This study evaluates the applicability of the new HIP-oil agglomeration process to treat Canadian bituminous ultra-fine coal and Russian sub-bituminous coal fines and compares results from agglomeration to the flotation response of both coals. Oil agglomeration is known to be sensitive to surface properties of coal. Since surface properties of coals depend not only on the rank of coal but also on their origin (depositional environment) and mineralogical composition, both the applicability of this new improved agglomeration process to the non-Australian coals and its efficiency became the motivation for this study. To evaluate the applicability of the new process to both Canadian bituminous and Russian sub-bituminous coals, a series of bench-scale tests were carried out under conditions similar to those described by van Netten et al. (2016) for the Australian coals. Based on the results obtained in this research, new boundary conditions for the application of the HIP emulsion-based oil agglomeration process have been outlined and conclusions on the viability of the new process to treat ultra-fine coal from Western Canada and Russian sub-bituminous coal fines have been reached.INTRODUCTION In most cases, to meet the market requirements, the mined coal has to be processed to reduce the ash content by the removal of mineral matter and thus to increase the quality of the coal products (van Netten et al., 2016). Generally, flotation is used for processing fines from high rank coals; however, there are high losses of very fine coal due to the inefficiency of this process. Furthermore, difficulty in dewatering the fine coal results in excessive moisture levels causing coal handleability issues, which increases costs in the coal-cleaning industry (Capes & Darcovich, 1984). Much of the development that has occurred in fine coal cleaning has taken place with higher-value coal, often metallurgical (Klima et al., 2012). If the fine coal is deemed to be too difficult or expensive to process, it may be discarded as waste (van Netten et al, 2014). Such disposal not only creates an environmental liability but may also result in the loss of a valuable, high quality product that is better liberated than the coarser fractions of coal."
