"With the accelerating pace of resource extraction, the quality of resources is decreasing, and the old tailing dams which have served for several decades have become the focus of attention. The secondary recovery of valuable metals in the tailings is an important aspect of the comprehensive utilization of tailings. The average iron content of iron tailing is 8%-12% in China. The research aimed at exploring the low-cost and efficient technical route to recycle eastern tailings of Anshan iron mining area. The purpose of the research is to scientifically find the rational conditions of magnetizing roasting and to provide an increase in recovery and quality of concentrates. The eastern tailings of Anshan mining area belong to high silicon bearing iron tailings, iron mainly exists in form of hematite-limonite with an iron grade of 10.60%, the main component of gangue is SiO2 with a grade of 76.22%. In order to reduce the influence of the tailings on the environment, fluidized magnetizing roasting and low intensity magnetic separation for the eastern tailings of Anshan mining area were carried out to improve the utilization of the tailings. The results indicated that an iron concentrate with an iron grade of 65.30% and a recovery of 85.85% could be obtained under the conditions of gas flow rate 8 m3/h, H2 concentration 50%, fluidized magnetizing roasting temperature at 600? for 20s. Phase analysis, magnetism analysis and XRD analysis on roasted materials indicated that hematite-limonite could be transformed to magnetite during the fluidized roasting, then the effective separation of iron and gangues could be made easily by the weak magnetic separation. INTRODUCTION It is universally acknowledged that the grade of iron ore in China is low, the output rate of iron ore tailings is high, usually more than 60%. At present, the comprehensive utilization rate of iron ore tailings is low in China. Generally, the iron ore tailings are stockpiled in the tailings dam. The tailing dams not only occupy a lot of land, but also takes a lot of money to construct and maintain. In addition, the noxious substances in the tailings, such as residual flotation agents and heavy metals, have a severe impact on the ecological environment. There is little doubt that tailing dams have a visual impact on the environment due to their regular geometric shape. Iron tailings can be treated as compound mineral, which is an important component of comprehensive utilization of mineral resources, and is an has been widely concerned. Lots of scholars have done a large amount of research work on a large number of iron ore tailings. Since the iron mineral crystal grain size is fine and the iron grade is low, the iron tailings have failed to achieve good selection criteria."

Newmont Batu Hijau operates with an accelerated mining rate to optimize life of mine (LOM) project economics. This results in a portion of ore mined being stockpiled for reclaim and processing throughout, and at the end of mine life. LOM economics can be further enhanced by preserving stockpiled ore value by mitigating oxidation effects. A detailed stockpile ore oxidation study was conducted to: ?? Develop a practical understanding of how oxidation affects ore value; ?? Determine how oxidation rate can be controlled, and; ?? Determine how oxidation effects can be mitigated to preserve ore value. The result of the study is a stockpile management strategy that significantly reduces oxidation related losses and, implementation of that strategy within practical constraints. Implementation includes installation of Controlled Potential Sulfidisation (CPS) flotation to facilitate oxidised sulfide copper recovery and, recovery of dissolved copper from stockpile drainage solution into saleable product. This paper describes the study results including managing and predicting stockpile oxidation with time, monitoring performance of implemented CPS flotation and recovery of dissolved copper from stockpile drainage. These are essential elements of successful long term mine operation in Batu Hijau.

Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) and the Discrete Element Method (DEM) are used to investigate Power Draw in a laboratory scale tumbling mill. The mill is run dry in batch mode at different speeds using mono-size charge of glass beads, and is mounted along with a torque transducer to measure power. Particle tracking information from PEPT is used to reconstruct the motion of glass beads and infer the overall charge behavior, while DEM is employed to simulate particle motion and interaction, with collision mechanics calculated using the Hertz-Mindlin contact model. For PEPT and DEM data, the product of torque and average angular velocities in discrete cells are accumulated to obtain mill power. This method is found to be within statistical agreement with measured power for all tests. Spatial distributions plotted from this approach highlight the regions of the mill that draw the greatest power. A second technique to obtain Power Draw from DEM data which sums particle forces against the mill geometry is similarly found to accurately predict mill power with lower statistical error. "Metals have been mined as ores since pre-history but metal production has increased dramatically in modern times driven by expanding Global GDP. Metal ore mining produces large amounts of waste rock and mine tailings. Mine tailings are the wastes produced after extracting the desired metal from the ore. There are several ways of dealing with this waste, and Ritcey (2005) identifies the following possibilities, land-based storage, backfill to the mine, deep lake disposal and marine disposal. In Papua New Guinea (PNG), both Misima and Lihir Mines adopted the marine disposal option, releasing tailings through a submerged pipe onto the sea floor. This special case is referred to as Deep Sea Tailings Placement (DSTP) in which the tailings deposition is sufficiently deep as to be below the euphotic zone. The most important aspect of deep sea tailings placement is that the tailings are deposited at great depth where exchanges between the seabed and the surface layers are small. The first quantitative multidisciplinary study of tailings impact on the deep sea was carried out from 2006 to 2010 in Papua New Guinea. The physical, chemical and biological work carried out has placed PNG at the forefront of research into the assessment and management of deep-sea environmental impacts related to mining in PNG. The study has provided data which has led to a better understanding of the ecological and geochemical processes in deep water that accompany DSTP in PNG and provided baseline data on deep-sea ecosystems in a scientifically poorly known tropical ocean. Additionally, guidelines on best practice for DSTP have been developed Here we present geochemical data obtained from sediment samples from the marine environment surrounding Lihir and Misima Islands."

Three spiral concentrators having different geometries were compared in a chromite processing plant. They had different diameters, helix-cross sections and capacities. Two of the spiral concentrators were manufactured in China and one of them was manufactured in Australia. The tests were carried out in a closed circuit experimental setup by using a low grade chromite ore. The pulp densities kept the same during the operation, and the samples were taken simultaneously. The effects of the different positions of the splitters on separation and the feed rate were the parameters that were observed during the experiments. The performances of three spiral concentrators were found to be different. To clarify the effect of the particle size on the separation in spiral concentrators, the screening was applied to the feed. The samples were sieved from 75µm. The test results indicated that the separation performance decreased dramatically in very fine particles. Although fine particles caused some problems in spiral concentrators, fine grinding is required for this particular chromite ore for better liberation. A suitable method for the fine particles should be investigated for acceptable recovery.

This investigation was carried out with low grade Murgul-Cakmakkaya copper ore once used to be dumped away as waste material. Sulphide minerals in the ore sample observed are chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite and to some extent molibdenite; quartz, calcite and dolomite are the gangue minerals. The ore sample assays 0.28% Cu, 2.94% Fe and 3.36% S. Mineralogical study of the ore sample showed that adequate liberation of chalcopyrite for flota-tion was achieved below 100 µm. In flotation tests Aerophine 3418-A was the collector employed, NaOH or Ca(OH)2were the pH modifiers. Deactivators used were sodium meta bi-sulphide, starch, dextrin and lime. MIBC was the frother used throughout the tests. Test results showed that starch alone was the most suitable depressant to give the optimum metal content and recovery val-ues. Activated charcoal was used to adsorb excess collector species in the flotation pulp during cleaning stages After two stages cleaning of the rougher concentrate using starch as the depressant a copper concentrate assaying 21.2% Cu was obtained with 79.5% recovery while the tailings contained 0.01% Cu and metal losses were about 3%

Pyrite ore is one of the main raw materials in the production of sulfuric acid. For a long time, the raw material containing the pyrite, which is used to produce sulfuric acid, generally contains S only 32%~45%. A plenty of residue from the sulfuric acid production contains 40%~50% Fe and 1%~2% S. Some of the residue also contains Cu, Pb, Zn and other harmful elements like As, thus it pollutes environment seriously and is solid waste. The research on comprehensive utilization of the residue has been made by many scholars. Through the study, the residue can only be used to pro-duce iron concentrate and the iron oxide red pigment. But because of the complex techniques, the low recovery, the low grade of iron concentrate , high sulfur in iron concentrate, causing second waste residue and the environmental pollution, the residue is mainly used as an accessory material in the production of cement, and is of a low value. Therefore, the iron resource in pyrite has not been used efficiently until now. In the paper, the flotation condition test, the flotation open circuit test and the flotation closed circuit test to produce high-purity pyrite concentrate with the low-grade pyrite ore in oceanic ore deposit have been carried on. Flotation reagent scheme of sulfuric acid used as activator and butyl xanthate as collector is determined. After four times depth cleaning, high-purity pyrite concentrate containing 52.82% S, 44.29% Fe, and only 2.89% impurities has been obtained. The S recovery is 99.13%, and the Fe recovery is 96.00% in the high-purity pyrite concentrate. The oxidizing roasting depth desulfurization experiment of the high-purity pyrite concentrate has been conducted. The results show that the Fe grade in the residue obtained is 68.58%, the content of S is 0.25%, the content of P is 0.0084%, the content of As is 0.0065%. The residue is a kind of high-quality iron-smelting raw material. Based on the above experiments, the industrial experiments on producing high-purity pyrite concentrate with the low-grade pyrite ore, and producing sulfuric acid and iron concentrate with high-purity pyrite concentrate have been done. The results indicate that the high-purity pyrite concentrate with the S grade of 51.24%, the Fe grade of 44.15% has been obtained. The iron concentrate obtained with 65.73% Fe and 0.23% S is a sort of high-quality iron-smelting raw material applied to the production of steel and iron smelting. Through the experimental study, the sulfur and iron resources in the pyrite ore have been recovered and utilized efficiently.

TiO2 is an ideal material for catalytic technology due to its unique properties. In this paper, Sm3+ doped TiO2 photo-catalyst was developed to improve the efficiency of TiO2 and to use the natural light as irradiation source, which was made from Titanium Tetrabutoxide and Samarium Oxide with the Sol-Gel process. The Sm3+-TiO2 photocatalyst was used to degrade reactive orange 4 (RO4) in Azo Dyes. The effects of solution pH, Sm3+ concentration and catalytic time on the degradation rate of RO4 were studied. The characteristics of the catalyst were analyzed with XRD and TEM. The experimental results show that the catalyst has high activity in the degradation of RO4. The Azo bonds of RO4 are active and easily broken by oxidation. The catalytic activity of the Sm3+ doped catalyst greatly depends on the pH of solution. The catalyst has high photo-catalytic activity at both neutral and alkaline conditions. The degradation mechanism of the Sm3+ doped TiO2 photo-catalyst was also discussed.

In this study, free fall tests are conducted with the objective of understanding the breakage properties of waste concrete for the guide of the direction of the better comminution process. Waste concrete of 75mm×53mm is tested at various drop heights with or without heat pretreatment. Test results indicate that a block of waste concrete does not break by free fall, but eventually breaks by repeated free falls. The number of free falls required for complete separation of large aggregates from the cement mortar considerably reduced when the samples were heated at 400?. Therefore, a great energy saving can be obtained when heating the waste concrete prior to crushing. The energy saving was found to be dependent on the height of free fall but in all cases, was still large enough to offset the additional energy required for heating. Also, it was found that the heat pre-treatment gives an additional advantage in that it produced cleaner recycled aggregates. This may result from easier detachment of cement mortar from the aggregates due to weakening of bonding forces by heating. By analyzing the size distribution of the crushed product, a free-fall breakage model is developed using the particle breakage ratio and the breakage pattern. The developed model can be used to predict and to analyze waste concrete processing circuit.

Flotation gases and conditioning of the pulp with them are one of the important parameters of flotation and should be taken into account especially in the flotation of sulphide ores. In this study, flotation of pure chalcopyrite and pyrite samples were investigated with air, oxygen and nitrogen as flotation gas and the effect of conditioning with these three gases also were performed. Flotation gas was introduced for 5min, 10min, 15min and 20 min. For chalcopyrite flotation there was no drastic change in recovery when air, oxygen and nitrogen were used as flotation gas but conditioning the pulp with oxygen for 10 minutes increased the recovery about 8% where pulp potential has been approximately 25 mV with chalcopyrite and 150 mV with platinum electrodes. Conditioning with all three gases decreased the pyrite recovery by about 20% with 20 minutes conditioning. Pulp potential decreased in the presence of nitrogen while conditioning with air and oxygen increased the pulp potential for both electrodes. Generally potential increased for both minerals with oxygenation and aeration time but it was stable or slightly decreased with nitrogenation. Comparison of the gases showed that the different flotation gases do not effect flotation recovery but conditioning the pulp with these gases at pre-flotation effects chalcopyrite and pyrite flotation recovery, most dramatically pyrite.

The preparation technological conditions and regeneration method of two novel granulated adsorbing materials of rectorite/fly ash composite (Material 1) and rectorite/water quenched - slag composite (Material 2) and the use of them to remove heavy metals from copper smelting plant wastewater have been studied. The experimental results showed that under the preparation conditions with the ratio of rectorite to fly ash or water - quenched slag of 1:1, the amount of the additive (Industrial Starch, IS) of 15% (Material 1) or 10% (Material 2), the addition of 50% water, and the calcination temperature of 500? (Material 1) or 400? (Material 2), the efficiency of heavy metal removal with the granulated materials was the best, whereas the ratio of disintegration loss was the lowest. Under the treatment conditions of natural pH, and with the addition of the granulated materials of 0.07g/cm3 (Material 1) or 0.05g/cm3 (Material 2), a reaction time of 60 minutes (Material 1) or 40 minutes (Material 2), and the adsorption temperature of 25?, the efficiency for the granulated materials to remove Cu2+Pb2+Zn2+Cd2+ and Ni2+ from the copper smelting plant wastewater was 98.9, 97.5, 96.7, 90.2, and 79.1, (Material 1) or 98.2, 96.3, 78.6, 86.2, and 64.2, (Material 2), respectively, and the quality indexes of the wastewater after treatment conformed with the first level of integrated wastewater discharge standard (GB8978-1996). When the adsorption of heavy metal ions on the surface attained saturation the granulated materials could be regenerated by washing with 1 mol/L sodium chloride (NaCl) solution and still with quite good heavy metal removal efficiency. The granulated adsorbing materials had the advantages of high efficiency of wastewater treatment, easy method of solid-liquid separation and regeneration, and a broad prospect of applications.

The floatability of andalusite and associated minerals are studied and their action mechanisms of andalusite and associated minerals with collector alkyl benzene sulphonate are also studied. Through the mensuration of electrical potential and the infrared spectroscopy, as well as desorption tests, it is confirmed that the interaction of andalusite with sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate (SDBS), is in addition to physical adsorption, but also is chemical adsorption. The study results of the pure minerals are used for the flotation of actual andalusite mineral. By flotation from contain-ing 45.68% andalusite ore, the fine andalusite concentrate is gained which Andalusite grade is 85.88%, containing Al2O355.29% and Fe2O3 less than 1.5%.

As a kind of complex physicochemical process, grinding would affect the subsequent mineral processing such as flotation considerably. In this study, the effect of wet grinding on malachite and calcite flotation using sodium oleate as collector was studied. And the mechanism of the effect of grinding was investigated. Laboratory scale grinding and flotation testing of malachite and calcite samples were performed. Different grinding media were used, including steel balls and zirconia balls. It was the aim of this work to study the effect of grinding on the pulp chemistry paying particular attention to flotation recovery. The effect of grinding media and different addition location of sodium oleate on malachite and calcite flotation was studied. The methodology used in this project involved grinding the ore with and without the addition of sodium oleate in mill, measuring the pH and metal ions produced by minerals after grinding, adding various quantities of sodium oleate and determining the copper recovery. The presence of species of products on the minerals after grinding was probed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the metal ions produced by minerals after grinding were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). It is showed that the mil-ling environments evaluated significantly affected the flotation of malachite and calcite. This study also discusses the effecting mechanism of grinding environment on floatability of malachite and calcite.

In diamond ores processing, final waste tailings size, rejected to dump, is one of the most important parameters. On one side, it is necessary to minimize losses of diamonds, whose size exceeds 1 mm, on the other side ? to provide for the plant high throughput and sufficiently low capital and energy costs, which is in greater part connected with disintegration process. Extensive laboratory, pilot-scale and commercial-scale dressability studies of different types of diamond ores have been performed at JSC ?Mekhanobr Engineering? in recent years. With that, special consideration was given to determination of the required ores? disintegration size that would provide for a high recovery of diamonds. In diamond ores processing, in order to exclude breaking of large diamonds, stage disintegration is used with regrinding of light fractions and heavy fraction X-ray fluorescent separation tailings. On account of rather weak bonds of diamonds with enclosing minerals, in crushing and grinding of diamond ores, selective disintegration takes place, with aggregates? breakup along plane surfaces of least bonding, which facilitates liberation of diamonds and their transition to free state. Heavy components losses with different sizes of final dump tailings were studied in processing of large samples. It was established, that in order to almost completely exclude losses of heavy components over 1 mm size, light fractions had to be ground to 2.5-3 mm size, while X-ray fluorescent separation heavy tailings of -15+3 mm size do not contain diamonds larger 1 mm in aggregates, and their regrinding does not increase total recovery of diamonds. On the basis of the conducted studies, relationships regarding heavy components and diamonds losses with respect to diamond ores final disintegration size were obtained, providing for more rational organization of the ores disintegration and processing flow sheet. The raw ore contains many kinds of valuable metal elements. It is rich in valuable metal elements, such as Pb, Zn, Sb, Sn, Ag and is associated with S,Fe,As,In,Cd. A new technology which includes medium intensity magnetic separation, preferential lead flotation, zinc-sulfur bulk flotation, zinc-sulfur flotation separation, tin gravity separation and tin slime flotation was chosen to recover valuable minerals in the raw ore, and the iron concentrate, the lead concentrate, the zinc concentrate, the sulfur concentrate and the tin concentrate can be obtained. To the zinc-sulfur bulk concentrate with the grade of 7.21%Zn and 16.97%As acquired by the zinc-sulfur bulk flotation, two different flowsheets of Zn-S separation technology are chosen to study. The lab test shows that when using lime+DM as depressor, the zinc concentrate assaying 47.73%Zn with the recovery of 95.01% can be obtained and the test indexes are better than that of the flowsheet which using lime as depressor. At the same time, the Cd content is 0.65% and the In content is 0.10% in the zinc concentrate, so they all reach the smelting comprehensive recovery standards and the As content decreases to 0.23%. Finally the flotation separation of christophite and As-bearing sulfide minerals can be successfully realized.

The effective removal of heavy metals from aqueous wastes is among the most important issues for many industrialized countries, How ever biosorption, i.e. the uptake of heavy metals by non- living biomass, has gained increased credibility during recent years. Biosorption of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution, on pretreated and immobilized Aspergillus niger was investigated in a batch and countinuous reactors. A.niger biomass pretreated by boiling in 0.5 N NaOH solution for 15 min, exhibited higher Cr(VI) removal capacity than autoclaved biomass. The optimum adsorption pH value observed for Cr(VI) ions was 2. The Cr(VI)removal rate increased with a decrease in pH. The influence of contact time, pH, Cr(VI) concentration, biomass concentration and temperature on Cr(VI) removal were also evaluated. Biosorption of Cr(VI) on pretreated biomass followed the Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption models.In this study A.niger biomass was immobilized in Na-alginate matrix. The biomass beads packed in a column were able to remove metal ions.In this study we used two different flow rate in a column, 1.5 mL/min and 3 mL/min.The breakthrough data obtained for Cr(VI) was adequately by the Thomas and Yan models and the adsorption capacity of the biomass was found to less than the adsorption capacity obtaind in the batch study. When the beads containing biomass become saturated with metal ions, the adsorbed metals were eluted using 0.5 N NaOH solution. Therefor nearly 90% of Cr(VI) was desorbed by NaOH solution.

A review of the laboratory- and pilot plant-scale physical separation techniques for the beneficiation of nickel (Ni) laterites shows limited efficacy. To date, the only upgrade technique adopted commercially, prior to hydrometallurgical processing of Ni laterites, is the removal of a barren, coarse size fraction in the feed by classification. In the present work we investigated two low grade (~ 1%), goethite-rich Ni laterite ores’ upgrading by magnetic separation, attritioning/coarse, (lower Ni-grade) gangue rejection and flotation techniques. Low intensity (0.1T) dry magnetic separation at ambient temperature of raw samples and those pre-heated at temperatures up to 450 °C showed evidence of pay metal Co and Mn bearing asbolane and/or lithiophorite minerals pre-concentration in the magnetic fractions. Ni distribution, however, did not show any noticeable magnetic upgrade but followed the weight distribution. Other ore pre-treatment methods (e.g., desliming and sulphidisation) followed by froth flotation with anionic and cationic reagents also led to noticeable (~35%) Ni upgrade. This is due to the deportment of Ni across several gangue host mineral phases (i.e. Fe oxide/hydroxide and a range of silicate/aluminosilicate minerals). From chemical analysis, after disaggregation of ~ 1% Ni grade feed ore, coarse (-600 + 38 µm) and fine (-38 µm) fractions of ~0.6% and 1.3% Ni grades respectively, were also produced, suggesting that a significant upgrade in Ni content can be achieved by rejecting the + 38 µm fraction with the loss of <40% of the Ni. The ore mineralogy, particularly the complexity and high number of un-liberated Ni-bearing phases, greatly compromises physical separation methods for these ores, with the possible exception of screening after disaggregation of the fines inherent in the run of mine ores.

"The use of PM40N, a specialty precious metals promoter in conjunction with a standard Xanthate based collector was extensively investigated in the flotation of a complex, silver-bearing, lead-zinc ore containing naturally occurring graphitic gangue. The ore, considered difficult to treat with conventional reagents, was tested at plant scale to determine the impact of the promoter on silver recovery, lead grade and also on the amount of zinc misplaced to the final lead concentrate.Initial laboratory-scale rougher flotation testing implied significant improvements in the recovery of silver and lead with a marginal amount of zinc displaced. Subsequent mini pilot flotation tests further revealed that a gain in selectivity and recovery could be achieved by adjusting PM40N promoter dosage and incorporating a cleaner flotation step, further improving rejection of sphalerite. Plant trials resulted in an improvement of 3% in Silver recovery coupled with a 2% increase in recovered lead whilst maintaining lead grade in the lead circuit.To date, the use of PM40N as a promoter has enabled the processing operation to significantly increase its plant economics. The partial replacement of the standard Xanthate based collector has also reduced the overall quantity of Xanthate required in the standard circuit by approximately 10% - which is a positive impact on the environment. It is envisaged that further optimization of plant parameters will favor stable operation and continue to boost revenues generated by subsequent improvements in silver metallurgy."

"Antofagasta Minerals S.A. (AMSA), for its Centinela District Project, is currently developing, at a first stage, a new 90 ktpd Concentrator Plant incorporating Esperanza Sur (ESP Sur) and Encuentro (ENC) ores. In order to dimension properly main equipment, specifically for grinding circuit, a final decision has been taken using geological and metallurgical (comminution) data from both body ores. Data was analyzed internally within AMSA and its consultants to get a final proposed circuit for further engineering studies. Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) parameter is one of the main key factors for proper dimensioning. To get an accurate value different tests have been made and modelled to ESP Sur and ENC ores. Also, operational data from Esperanza operation has been taken into account due to its similar ore characteristics to ESP Sur ore and incorporated as input data for design. Depending on data, quality and amount, it is possible to estimate accuracy for project investment and risk level, hence investment decision can be taken under good and reliable information."

"Flotation processing of water-soluble minerals (potassium ores, sedimentary salts of salt lakes) is currently the main method for production of potassium fertilizers and concentrated carnallite which is the initial product for production of metallic magnesium. Flotation of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl) is carried out in the electrolyte solutions: KCl-NaCl-H2O and KCl-NaCl-MgCl2-H2O. The report presents the results of studies of the effect of concentration and the electrolyte type on the size of air bubbles in a flotation cell in comparison with the floatability of mineral constituents of potash ores. The floatability in electrolytes of various compositions has been studied: - of sylvite (KCl) by alkylamines, - of halite (NaCl) by alkylmorpholines, - of silicate-carbonate slimes contained in the ore by ethoxylated surfactants. The reagent modes (regimes) activating the flotation desliming of potash ores have been developed."
