Operating experience with the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell showed that under conventional operating conditions, although the thermal efficiency of the plant was very' high, the physical quality of the char produced was extremely poor. By variation of operating conditions to produce the slow drying rate developed by the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne, an improvement in the size of the char was achieved. A similar approach in the carbonization stage where severe breakage of the briquettes still occurred was not possible due to insufficient control over the heating in this stage. Theoretical analysis of the heat exchange process has shown that severe heating of the briquettes entering the carbonizer is a characteristic of the Lurgi system and cannot be controlled by modified operation. The plant has been closed down for reconstruction of the heating system to enable it to be used to produce hard char.INTRODUCTIONAn experimental carbonization plant was operated at the Morwell Works of the 'Gas and Fuel Corporation from November 1958 until July 1959. This plant was built as a pilot plant by the Corporation to designs supplied by the Lurgi Gesellschaft fur Warmetechnik and had the nominal capacity to carbonize 25 tons of brown coal briquettes and to produce 11 tons of char per day. The iron ore deposits of the Port Hedland district of North Western Australia are associated with band'ed sedimentary iron formations that form part of the local succession of folded and faulted Archaean volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The iron formations are regarded as the protore beds or sources of the iron which became concentrated by supergene processes to form commercial grade iron ore deposits.Iron oxide deposits occurring in situ within the protore beds are considered to be of residual-replacement origin, due to supergene leaching of gangue minerals and' deposition of secondary iron oxides in their place, Two types of deposit have been recognized. Lode deposits are deep lenses of massive hematite located adjacent to major faults. These deposits are thought to be very old and to have originated by supergene processes during the long period of erosion represented by the major unconformity between the Archaean rocks and the overlying Proterozoic beds. The other type, known as crust ore deposits, are shallow cappings of hematite and goethite on hills formed by the outcrops of steeply dipping protore beds. These deposits could have originated as far back as the early Mesozoic and it is possible that the ore-forming process is continuing at a slow rate at the present day.Deposits formed by erosion and re-deposition of material derived from pre-existing residual-type deposits are known as derived deposits. These include conglomerates and scree accumulations of various types and ages and pisolitic deposits formed by supergene leaching of transported detritus. Derived deposits range in age from early Proterozoic to Recent. Three large deposits of good quality lignite were located and delineated in the Central Otago region between October 1978 and July 1979. The program was initiated and funded by Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy as part of the national Coal Resource Survey. The exploration work was carried out by Lime and Marble Limited on a contract basis (Bowman, 1980). The three deposits were all potentially mineable by open cast methods and possessed combined indicated and, inferred reserves in the order of 1000 x 106 tonnes. They ranked with the previously discovered Eastern Southland 1ignites and as such constituted an important national energy resource. Fifteen months later a second more detailed investigation of similar duration was undertaken by the Liquid Fuels Trust Board (LFTB). The objective was to upgrade and refine the geological data base of all of the nine South Island 1ignite deposits in order to make preliminary economic assessments of their potential. Again Lime and Marble Limited acted as the exploration operator (Bowman, 1981a, 1981b, 1981c).

The design of excavations in high displacement mining environments requires consideration of both the load and displacement capacity of the ground reinforcement and support systems. This paper is a case study on the design of point anchored rebar bolts using laboratory tests and field trials at the Ridgeway Deeps block cave. A laboratory testing program was carried out to measure the mechanical properties of the Strata Control Systems R27 Secura resin bolt which is currently being installed on the extraction and undercut level at the Ridgeway Deeps block cave. The aim was to quantify elastic, plastic and energy parameters for various bolt, mesh and plate systems. Experiments were performed on bar segments, bolt/plate systems, and bolt/plate/mesh/resin systems. The mechanical properties were calculated from tensile tests with a 500 kN Avery machine. Load-displacement data was collected from four different testing configurations. The laboratory results are compared with underground measurements and observations of bolt performance.

The Mine granite at the Ardlethan tinfield is dated by Rb-Sr on a muscovite concentrate at not less than 417 ± 2.5 Ma (2s), consistent with the intrusion of this granitic body into folded Late Ordovician sediments. A combination of Rb-Sr and K-Ar evidence suggests a slightly younger age, 41O ± 2.5 Ma, both for the neighbouring Ardlethan Granite and for the hydrothermal alteration of the Mine granite, with which the tin is associated.On this basis, the somewhat high 206Pb/204Pb of two galena samples from within the hydrothermal alteration zone is best explained by an increase in U/Pb of order 10 per cent during a geochemical event in the Late Precambrian, in the rocks which eventually yielded the Pb to the mineralising fluid. This earlier event probably increased Th/U in these rocks as well, by as much as 5 per cent. If these reconstructions are valid, the lower-than-average U/Pb implied for the original Precambrian source rock bespeaks a mantle component of marginally greater proportion than for "average orogene".

In an underground mine, different mining activities such as undercutting and cave progression generate redistribution in the present in situ stress field, and these changes are represented in the rock mass through induced seismicity.In order to study and analyse the induced seismicity generated in El Teniente, a block model was developed to account for the dissipated seismic energy through different areas of the mine from 1992 to 2015. More than 2.1 million seismic events were unified and classified in 3D in order to be used for the interpolations. The resultant model variables account for the accumulated energy releases in a monthly time resolution, and provide the ability to intersect different 3D entities with the stored information in the blocks, and estimate the energy evolution inside these entities.The generated model was used to analyse the geotechnical variables that determine the seismic response for the rock mass in the mine, such as geometry and direction of advance of the undercut fronts, lithological domains, and to study the ‘work’ the rock mass needed to go through in order to generate caving in areas with different stress settings.A specific area of the mine under high-stress conditions was analysed by studying the seismic energy associated with two subsidence caves interacting around the project, the modelled lithology. Outotec has performed numerous research and development projects and various surveys in the study of reverse iron ore flotation. Over the past four years their TankCell-70 and TankCell-160 flotation cells at the Germano concentrator of Samarco in Brazil were extensively surveyed. These surveys have revealed some extreme operating conditions in reverse iron ore flotation and are the subject of this paper. Some of the findings include large variations in the content of solids in the various flotation stages. At the bottom of the cleaner cells, the content of solids by weight reached over 60 per cent, whereas at the bottom of the scavenger cell this was less than 50 per cent. Froth carry rates were also significantly different in the various flotation stages. In the case of coarse material, the scavenger cells operated at a froth carry rate of over 40 t/h.m2. With fine material, however, froth carry rates of less than 10 t/h.m2 were measured. High froth carry rates caused significant changes in the residence times at Samarco. In the rougher cells, the fifth cell had more than double the residence time of the first cell. This was even more pronounced with the scavenger cells, where the second cell had more than triple the residence time of the first cell. High froth carry rates also caused losses in iron recovery. As a consequence of such findings, it appears that different rules apply in the sizing of reverse flotation circuits compared to direct flotation circuits. Different operating parameters (mixing intensities and air flow rates) must also be used in the rougher, cleaner and scavenger cells in order to optimise the metallurgical performance. Detailed mineralogical investigation of a tailing sample from the Juno plant circuit at Tennant Creek was carried out to determine the nature of the unrecovered bismuth and whether any possibility existed for improving bismuth recovery. The investigation showed that the Ibismuth was present in a complex mixture of Bi-Pb-Ou-Se-S minerals (termed "bismuthinite"), of which about 74 per cent was locked (mainly with magnetite) and 26 per cent was liberated (18 per cent in the minus 7 µm slime). The results suggested that attention should be directed to both finer grinding and improved flotation of slime "bismuthinite", and testwork carried out by Peko Mines N.L. on the basis of these recommendations led to a significant improvement in bismuth recovery.Detailed mineralogical investigation of two Juno concentrates was carried out to determine the nature of the selenium present and whether any possibility existed for improving the selenium grade. The investigation indicated that virtqally all the bismuth, selenium, and lead was present in "bismuthinite", which showed a composition range of 32-82 per cent Bi, 0-42 per cent Pb, 0-24 per cent Se, and 5-18 per cent S. Differences in the Bi/Se ratios of the two concentrates could be attributed to different average Bi/Se ratios of the constituent "bismuthinite", and the relatively low selenium grade of the "bismuthinite" precluded the possibility of obtaining a high grade selenium concentrate with high selenium recovery.However, differential flotation and/or low intensity magnetic separation to remove chakopyrite, and magnetite, the main diluents of the concentrate, could be expected to upgrade the selenium content byup to 80 per cent (relative) and .festwork carried out by Peko Mines N.L. on the basis of the recommendations of the mineralogical investigation confirmed that depression of chalcopyrite in the flotation circuit could produce significantly improved selenium grades.These investigations illustrate the application of mineralogy to the practical problems of improving plant performance. Mineralogy has an important role to play in providing quantitative data on which the metallurgist can evaluate plant performance and base a programme of metallurgical testwork, and early mineralogical investigation of feeds, concentrates, middlings, and tailings can lead to the avoidance of much abortive and expensive metallurgical testwork.

The copper and zinc contents of herbarium specimens of 11 of the 12 Australian species of Polycarpaea were determined in order to establish background and anomalous values of potential use in biogeochemical prospecting.Cumulative frequency curves were used to establish appropriate threshold concentrations for six species including the "copper plant"' P spirostylis. Collection localities of Polycarpaea specimens with anomalous copper or copper-and-zinc values are under investigation.

Morphological analysis of alluvial gold recovered from the same segment of a placer by four common commercial methods indicates that gold shape and the presence of quartz intergrowths or sulphide overgrowths substantially influence the recovery efficiency of each method. The amount and types of gold saved by each method varies according to the different hydrodynamic conditions under which each of the methods operates. Reverse circulation drilling has the lowest efficiency and preferentially loses moderate-high flatness gold and intergrown or overgrown gold particles with relatively low density. Gravity riffle, hydraulic riffle, and jigcentrifugal concentrator systems respectively save progressively more of these problematic gold morphotypes, but still lose significant and sometimes substantial amounts (of profit) to the tailings. Because of the differences in recovery efficiency, reverse circulation drilling probably underestimates the grade of most placers and may have resulted in bypassing several economic deposits. Losses to tailings by commercial recovery plants arise from inadequacies in fundamental plant design features. These inadequacies compromise plant efficiency by limiting the ability of plants to simulate the wide range of hydrodynamic conditions necessary to operate effectively throughout placer systems. Incorporation of sand pumps and multiple recovery methods into the more sophisticated plants only partly overcomes these inadequacies. At best, efficiency will be maximised in a few segments of the placer determined by individual plant design, and will decrease progressively upstream and downstream of those segments. Without prior knowledge of the morphological characteristics of the gold to be mined, it is difficult to choose the most appropriate plant design, or to estimate what proportion of the gold will be recoverable by any given plant. If the relevant relationships are not considered beforehand, the recovery plant is likely to lose a significant proportion of the gold, and sacrifice maximum profit.

The greater part of this paper comprises the material used in a lecture delivered to the South Queensland Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in September, 1949. It contains little in the way of original matter, its main purpose being to call attention to the need for research into the properties of Queensland coals and to indicate some of the lines such investigations might profitably follow.Since the lecture was given the Powell Duffryn (1949) 1 report, which has made an excellent start along these lines, has been printed. This report is, however, only a beginning, though a big one, and there is ample room for many years of work along similar lines.The paper is based largely on the work of de Jersey (1946, 1949)2,3,4,5 and Jones and de Jersey (1947)6, but these workers in turn owe a debt to the work of many British and American investigators, too many to enumerate. A unique sluicing process for recovering tailing impounded in a valley was developed by Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd., West Coast Mines, Rosebery, Tasmania.Earthmoving equipment could not be used as most of the material to be recovered was semi-fluid. A conventional sluking method was also impracticable as there was no suitable working face from which the process could be commenced.Operations started from a flat surface, using special techniques for sinking through the tailing and establishing producing working faces as the sinking process continued.After about 2 years the bottom of the dam was reached and conventional sluicing methods could be used.

A commercial Philips X-ray Fluorescence (X.R.F.) analyser was converted to an experimental instrument suitable for determination of the accuracy to be expected of X.R.F. on line analyses of concentrator slurries. Problems with stability of slurry sample presentation were eliminated by a number of minor modifications.By the use of multiple linear regression techniques instrument calibration equations including error terms were determined for copper flotation feed slurries. Results indicated that the accuracy of copper and iron analyses of flowing slurry samples could approach that of static pressed powder samples.Possible means of reducing the error terms to a level of at least that of pressed powdel' samples involve alternative methods of compensating for the per cent solids in the slurry, Design is under way for installation of a plant unit.

Hainan Province (Hainan Island) in South China hosts numerous Mo-polymetallic ore deposits that are genetically related to Cretaceous granitoid intrusions. Laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb dating and molybdenite Re-Os dating reveal three metallogenic episodes: the late Early Cretaceous (ca 112 Ma), the late Early to Late Cretaceous (ca 95–106 Ma) and the Late Cretaceous (ca 72–89 Ma). The third mineralising episode might represent the youngest Mo mineralising event in East China. Results from this study demonstrate that Mo mineralisation on Hainan Island occurred under an extensional setting that was prevailing in the late Mesozoic (ca 180–67 Ma) in South China, which was likely due to the slab rollback of the subducted palaeo-Pacific plate beneath the South China continent.CITATION:Xu, D R, Hu, G C, Wu, C J, Fu, Y R and Chen, H, 2015. The definition of an ore handling system and its consequent layout design is of crucial importance in cave mining projects. It not only represents the main driver in the production capacity and reliability of the mining system, it is also a fundamental variable in the footprint’s development time and cost.In recent decades, load-haul-dump (LHD) tramming distance optimisation through the allocation of several orepasses inside the footprint has been the most common practice in ore handling system layout definition at Codelco’s operations. Today, the improvement of existing technology, such as higher-capacity LHDs and jaw-gyratory crushers, and intensive preconditioning techniques to improve fragmentation allow the conceptualisation of simple and highly productive ore handling system layouts for wide caving areas that avoid the complexity and high cost of developing numerous orepasses inside the footprint.The initial macroblocks of the Chuquicamata underground mine project (PMCHS) consider an ore handling system layout in which LHDs dump into orepasses located inside the footprint area. The ore is then transferred into crusher chambers located below the production level, where it is crushed by jaw crushers and then conveyed to surface. In an effort to reduce development time and costs, a new ore handling system layout for the PMCHS experimental macroblocks was engineered using improved technologies and techniques in a simpler mining system. The sulphides can be arranged in a series determined by the relative amounts of ionic and covalent bonding present. This series is similar to the paragenetic series common to most sulphide ore deposits. Investigation of the surface tensions of the corresponding heavy metal iodides by the maximum bubble pressure method throws some light upon this relationship. It is shown that the surface tension of molten iodides decreases as the chemical bonding within them becomes more covalent. These results are interpreted in terms of the constitution of the melts, and are extended to cover the case of sulphides in solution in a silicate melt. It is concluded that sulphides tend to lower the surface tension of silicate melts and that this tendency becomes greater as the bonding within the dissolved sulphide groups becomes more covalent. A possible relationship between this conclusion and the origin of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits is indicated.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the order of deposition, or paragenesis of sulphide minerals is remarkably similar in hypogene ore deposits throughout the world. This widespread similarity points towards the operation of some fundamental process which must be intimately connected with -the genesis of these ores. A study of the crystalline materials on or near the surface of freshly made or "green" superphosphate granules and mature, "set" superphosphate granules was undertaken using X-ray diffraction, X-ray mapping, scanning electron microscopy and electron probe micro analysis techniques. Calcium sulphate (CaSO4), calcium sulphate hemihydrate (CaSO4 1/2H20), and mono calcium phosphate monohydrate (Ca(H2PO4)2H2O), were the only crystalline species present in the "green" superphosphate.In the set superphosphate however, additional compounds were present, namely complex iron and aluminium phosphates Ca(Fe,AI) H(HPO4hF2)2H2O, (Fe)3(H3O)H8 (PO4)6H2O and calcium sulphate dihydrate (CaSO4.2H2O).The complex phosphates tied up the major part of the Fe and Al in the system and were concentrated on or near the surface of the granule. An intimate mixture of CaSO4.2H2O, and CaSO4, along with the above mentioned complex Fe-AI compounds, crystallize close to the surface of the granule and cause the setting of superphosphate that takes place during storage.
