NI-CR and some Ni-Cr-Fc alloys, when used as electrical resistance heating elements in reducing atmospheres, at times suffer rapid breakdowns due to so-called "green rot." These reducing atmospheres are most frequently used in bright annealing and heat-treating furnaces which are kept for long periods of time at 1500' to 1800°F. The green rot is a preferential oxidation of the chromium in the alloy to such an extent that the remaining metal frequently becomes ferromagnetic. The Curie point (magnetic transition point) at room temperature for a pure Ni-Cr alloy is known to be at about 7 pct Cr.¹ This represents a severe loss in chromium for one popular grade of resistance alloy, which is nominally 80 pct Ni-20 pct Cr. The formation of oxides along the grain boundaries makes the ribbon brittle and gives the fracture a green, earthy appearance—hence the name. The authors have studied this phenomenon, simulating the industrial conditions by heating resistance ribbons in various reducing atmospheres, such as moist hydrogen or the atmosphere specified in the ASTM test.² This atmosphere contains 16 pct H2, 10 pct CO, 4 pct C02, 1 pct CH1, 1.5 to 2.5 pct H2O, balance N2. Little success was had in producing severe corrosion with the commercial 80 pct Ni-20 pct Cr alloys. It had been noticed, however, that 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloy wires deteriorated very rapidly when placed in the bottom of narrow thermocouple protection tubes. The bottoms of the tubes with the wires were heated in air. This took place both in porcelain tubes and in Inconel* tubes either with the cold end open or loosely stoppered with asbestos. On examination the wires showed microstructures which would be classified as green-rot corrosion. Subsequent investigations with various alloy wires confirmed the observation that corrosion occurred in some wires, including 80 pct Ni-20 pct Cr alloys, much more rapidly in such tubes than had occurred previously in test atmospheres mentioned above. When 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloys are oxidized with an abundant air supply, the oxide coat consists of both nickel and chromium oxides. In this case thermodynamic equilibrium between the oxides is not established. However, when oxidized 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloy specimens were heated to 1500" to 1800°F inside small diameter tubes, the oxide coat transformed to a bright metallic outer layer of nickel or nickel-rich alloy, beneath which appeared a green oxide, followed by intergranularly attacked metal. The obvious explanation is that in the narrow tubes, thermodynamic equilibrium is being established according to the equation NiO + Cr (in alloy) ? Ni + Cr2O3 This reaction is favored due to the fact that the oxygen pressure over nickel oxide is more than 10"' times the oxygen pressure over the green chromium oxide. The initial oxygen in the tubes is depleted very rapidly by oxidation of the wire and of the tube, if it is metallic. A confirmation of the occurrence of the reaction, reduction of NiO by the chromium in the alloy, was obtained by putting oxidized nickel foil into an evacuated quartz tube along with a piece of bright 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloy ribbon, and heating the tube at 1820°F for a number of hours. The nickel oxide on the foil was completely reduced to pure nickel, leaving a bright foil. The 90 pct Ni-10 pct Cr alloy became strongly magnetic and showed the typical green-rot structure. Weights of the samples before and after testing showed the weight loss of the foil to approximately equal the weight gain of the ribbon. Evidently the bottom of long, narrow protection tubes, stoppered or not, may under certain conditions act just as the sealed quartz tubes in respect to being a confined space in which oxygen is not freely replenished. This condition of oxygen depletion can be prevented by introducing a small amount of air into the bottom of the tube. Many conditions becloud the green-rot phenomenon, such as carburization, sulphidization, and the presence of other corrosive agents. However, these experiments have shown that the basic reaction is a case of internal oxidation which can occur simply by adjusting the oxygen pressure to a low enough level so that the atmosphere will leave the nickel intact and oxidize the chromium. The action of the other agents in commercial atmospheres can then be taken up as individual cases. From these and numerous other tests completed to date or still in progress, it is believed that a more critical evaluation of electrical resistance alloys for their resistance to green-rot corrosion can be made. A much better understanding of the mechanism for this type of corrosion should also result. A more complete report on these experiments will be published later. The economics of aerial survey and the technical processes by the aid of which vertical and oblique aerial photographs are turned into line maps showing the most profuse topographical detail such as contours, rivers, roads, plantations, habitations and cultivated lands do not concern us here. They have been ably and exhaustively described in the publications of the British War Office, handbooks on surveying methods and on photogrammetry and in the South African mining, engineering and geological press. Suffice it to mention that for geological interpretation vertical photographs are used on such scales as 1/5000 to 1/10,000, overlapping each other by 55 to 60 per cent in the direction of flight and some 10 to 20 per cent sideways on to the next sequence or strip. Through this duplication in the overlap the stereoscopic examination becomes possible. The standards by which monochrome aerial photographs are interpreted can be grouped under the following headings: 1. Continuity.—The continuity of topographic relief not obtainable on the ground owing to the smallness of man relative to that relief. Here lies the greatest value of aerial survey with relation to geology. An immediate alignment can often be made of drainages running in different directions on each side of a hill; saddles and gorges in the mountainsides; abrupt termination of outcrop or indubitable signs of faulting. Most conclusive evidence is thus often obtained about faults which may be perfectly visible at one place on the ground but cannot elsewhere be identified because of decreased throw. Similarly, dikes can often be followed notwithstanding frequent interruption and disappearance under the soil. Scattered outcrop in scrub-covered or bush-covered country can be conveniently located and often correlated, with a large saving of time compared with field work. The same applies to geological contacts. Once these have been established at a few points on the ground, the intervening stretches can be drawn in.

THE LIFE and works of Alexander Agassiz, first president of the Calumet & Hecla Mining Co., were recalled to memory when a monument bearing his statue was unveiled in Agassiz Park, at Calumet, Mich., on Sept. 26, The statue is the work of Paul W. Bartlett, of New York, and was erected by George R. Agassiz, eldest son of Alexander Agassiz. We are indebted to Rodolphe L. Agassiz, now president of the Calumet & Hecla Consolidated, for the accompanying photograph of the statue. The principal address at the unveiling ceremony was delivered by Allen F. Rees, of Houghton, who said, in part: To the world at large Alexander Agassiz was preeminently the man of science. With all his devotion to the industrial life of this district, he found the time to devote to the con-tinuation of his work of scientific research which had been the life work of his fa-ther, Louis Agassiz. Not only did he acquire eminence for his scientific at-tainments and learn-ing, but he was recognized and hon-ored throughout the civilized world for his achievements and accomplishments in the realm of original research. His work in the fields of nat-ural science, in oceanography, in marine zoology, and in other similar lines of research, has added much to our knowledge of the world's mysteries. His life was one of accomplishment also in the industrial world. The union in one life of acknowledged achievement as a scientist and the accomplishment of great results in the prac-tical industrial world is a rare thing, and its possibility has never been exemplified in greater measure than in his life and its results.

Mine financing, or providing adequate capital for developing and bringing a mining property into production, is an essential requirement for a successful operation. Today it presents a different picture than even twenty-five years ago. The day appears to be gone when a mining property could pay its own way from grass roots to production. The country has been quite thoroughly combed for surface showings from which sufficient initial profit could be immediately garnered to pay for further development and production facilities. The four M's for success in mining-mineral, market, management, and money-are still essential; but doubled or tripled wage costs and steep advances in cost of equipment and supplies throw increased emphasis on adequate capital funds for bringing in a prospect and making it a producer. Consequently, the old picturesque, although seldom rewarding, grub- staking procedure where a single venturesome citizen might advance funds to a prospector on a fifty-fifty basis for whatever discovery he might find, has largely disappeared. Its place, to some degree, has been taken by the small syndicate of venturesome members who band together for furnishing funds to a group of prospectors for the same general purposes. Such a syndicate has a definite organization and is usually assured of sufficient initial funds, or flow of funds, to carry on work for several years. It is headed by an engineer-promoter who has had considerable field experience as well as personal knowledge of his prospecting crews. For the owner of a potential mining property who has ample capital, the problem is to determine (1) justification for the necessary investment in exploration and development, and (2) the economics of the enterprise as to size and degree of integration of the final operating entity. If the owner of such a property has little or no capital, he also faces these same basic problems but, in addition, must be able to present the findings of fact and persuade the prospective investor that the enterprise will produce

Following minor slope failures at the commencement of mining the west wall of the Kanmantoo Mine was redesigned from an overall slope between haul roads of 55° to 46°. This decision was based on a probabilistic analysis which indicated that 46° was the optimum economic slope.

Autogenous batch grinding tests were performed in laboratory-scale tumbling mills with magnetite, limestone, and sandstone pebbles. The influence of pebble size, feed size, mill speed and loading, and grinding time on the fineness of grinding was investigated. Comparisons were made with the results from ball mill grinding experiments.

Sponsored by the Utah Section of AIME, the 1960 Annual Rocky Mountain Minerals Conference brought more than 500 members of the mineral industry to the conference rooms of the Newhouse Hotel in Salt Lake City during the period October 5 to October 7. Under the overall supervision of J. M. Ehrhorn, general chairman, and H. E. Wright, assistant general chairman, the Conference offered 14 papers of technical interest in four sessions during the first two days, and it culminated in the Exploration Symposium held on the morning of October 7. The opening session of the Conference, meeting on the morning of October 5, heard R. P. Work, utility engineer of the Mountain Fuel Supply Co., discuss the growth and economic factors related to the use of natural gas in Utah. In his paper entitled Natural Gas Market In Utah, Mr. Work emphasized the very good prospects of natural gas serving almost all parts of that state. He mentioned that recently the El Paso pipeline, built to serve the Pacific Northwest with gas from Texas, has permitted natural gas to be available to Eastern Utah, and a tentatively planned pipeline from Green River, Wyo. to Southern California will bring natural gas to the central and southeast areas of the state.

Monazite has had a Cinderella-like history. Although nearly go per cent pure rare-earth compound (rare-earth phosphate) it was sought at first not for the rare earths but for the sake of a minor constituent—thorium. The thorium, essential for the Welsbach gaslight mantle, was present in only small quantities and the principal constituents, the rare earths, were largely discarded. Gradually, however, the rare earths have developed uses of their own and today have left the thorium far behind in value. Occurrence Monazite was first produced commercially about 1886, in North Carolina, where it was collected in small sluices by farmers who found it in stream beds on their land. The deposits were later exploited on a larger scale, but were mostly abandoned in a few years, when monazite from Brazil came upon the market in far larger quantities. Domestic production ceased entirely in 1906. The Brazilian source is still active, together with Indian, Dutch East Indies, and Australian deposits. Several other localities in the United States have yielded monazite, but none of these has produced commercially as yet. Monazite occurs originally in pegmatite~ and gneisses, through which, unfortunately, it is scattered in highly dispersed form. All commercially useful deposits consist of transported monazite sands liberated by erosion and concentrated by the action of water, which has sluiced away lighter materials and concentrated the heavy (D = 5.0 to 5.2) grains of monazite, together with ilmenite, zircon, garnet, and other dense minerals. The Carolina deposits were in stream beds; most of the other deposits mentioned are on or near the seashore, where the action of the waves has served to concentrate the monazite. In most cases today, the sands are worked to obtain the ilmenite and zircon, as well as monazite. The minerals are separated by means of sluices, dry tables, and magnetic separators, and each is finally obtained nearly pure. No crushing or grinding is necessary. The concentrates are shipped in fiber bags. Dolomite-fluxed pellets of various compositions were made from magnetite concentrate, hematite concentrate and a concentrate containing a natural mixture of both. Physical properties and reduction test results were used to ascertain proper compositions and firing temperatures. These pellets were subjected to physical tests and to reduction tests. Petrographic and electron microprobe examinations were made to evaluate the effect of composition and fining on the phase assemblage. We interpreted our test results in terms of chemistry and microstructure and related these to properties. This approach enabled w to determine the composition best suited to each of the three concentrates. Compared with acid pellets, dolomite- fluxed pellets of the optimum compositions had similar physical properties but swelled less, softened at a higher temperature, and reduced faster and more completely.

THOSE of us who have been following rock drilling work for the last 15 or 20 years can recall some of the problems that were encountered with the old piston type of rock drill and the solid steel which it used. There was frequent trouble in keeping a straight hole in badly broken ground when using the ordinary four- point bit that had a flare on the wings of about 14". The drill steel, when pounding down its hole, would follow the line of least resistance and draw away from the desired line when it encountered a weak side in the ground through which it was drilling. Some would overcome the difficulty by making long winged bits to prevent the steel crowding over; this would relieve the troubles to a great extent. There was trouble with the rifling of drill holes and inability to drill round holes in some ground. The cure for these ills was to use the "X" bit, rather than the crossbit. The "2" bits were brought out in an effort to make it easier to drill a round hole in bad ground. Most of these troubles were before the days when the mechanical drill sharpener was in as common use as it is today. It was not until the introduction of the Leyner type of rock drill, requiring hollow steel that the users of rock drills found themselves confronted with more difficult prob- lems than they had ever encountered before with drill steel because the steel had to stand more severe service.

THIS review of the past year's progress in iron and steel metallurgy presents examples of only a few of the interesting or important accomplishments made in the United States. In the field of iron ore concentration increased attention was given to the study of the more difficultly separated wash ores and some progress was made in tabling. One difficulty with the table, in concentrating iron ore where the percentage of concentrate in the feed is large, has been the removal of fine silica from the thick layer .of concentrates in the cleaning zone. One company has -Made an important contribution toward the solution of this problem by an extension of the well-known plateau principle. By a special riffling of the plateau section of the table, the concentrates are crowded together. This action forces the fine silica to the top of the bed in the cleaning zone, whence the cross-flowing currents of water -can wash it into the middling product. Some work has been done on the application of froth flotation to the concentration of iron ores. Laboratory experiments were made at the Colorado School of Mines in which hematite was, successfully floated. Using oleic acid as a frothing and collecting agent and sodium carbonate as the conditioning agent, a high recovery of rich ,concentrate was obtained.
