"The process of filtrate loss of low solid-phase drilling fluid at different content of polyanionic cellulose is investigated by the standard filtration test. The test results showed that when time of filtration is same, the filtrate volume decreases linearly with the increase of content of polyanionic cellulose. When content of polyanionic cellulose is same, the velocity of filter loss decreases nonlinearly with the increase of time and the velocity of filter loss will reach a stable value. The filtrate volume in 7 to 8 minutes can reach half of the total filtrate volume. At the same time, the velocity of filter loss of drilling fluid decreases nonlinearly with the increase of viscosity. When apparent viscosity is between 3.5~4.15 mPa.s, decrease speed of velocity of filter loss is quick. The results are helpful for characteristics evaluation of filtrate loss of drilling fluid and control of filtrate loss.IntroductionDuring the process of drilling, water of drilling fluid can leakage into stratum, the water can result in instability and collapse of borehole wall. At the same time, the original ratio of drilling fluid will change. The density of drilling fluid will increase, the performance of the drilling fluid will change. Controlling amount of filtration is important to drill successfully. The additives of controlling filtrate loss are mainly two types, particle materials and polymer materials. High-molecular polymer is a kind of high-molecular material, has the adsorption effect, high polymer protection, can improve the advantages of slurry viscosity (Xu,2004 and Dehghanpour,2001). Some scholars carried out some study on the polymer material fluid loss agent in recent years, these study mainly focused on CMC, HEC, MHEC, CMHEC, starch and its derivatives(Zhang,2005 and Chevron,2009).About PAC (polyanionic cellulose) as drilling mud additives, a few of scholars carried out some relevant work. Plank (1992) applied PAC into ordinary freshwater drilling fluid and analyzed temperature stability of freshwater drilling fluid. Bennion (2000) applied PAC into drilling fluid and analyzed effect of polyanionic cellulose on strata inhibitory. Huang (2011) analyzed effect of PAC on properties of the high-density water-based drilling fluid. Mahto (2004) applied PAC into fresh water and salt-water drilling fluid and analyzed effect of PAC on rheological properties of the drilling fluid. Wang (2008) applied PAC into alkaline drilling fluid to study various performance of drilling fluid. PAC is a renewable resource and has good application prospect (Ankara, 2005). So it is very important to understand the effect of PAC on filtration process of drilling fluid.The test was conducted by changing the content of the PAC in drilling fluid. The object of this paper is to understand effect of polyanionic cellulose on filtration process of the low solid-phase drilling fluid."

In its study of methods for reducing metal losses in the non- ferrous metal industry, the Bureau of Mines has conducted a long series of experiments on electric brass melting and collected much data on the experiments of others. Reports bearing on this work that have already been published by the Bureau of Mines are Bulletin 73, "Brass-furnace practice in the United States," and Bulletin 77, "The electric furnace in metallurgical work." A comprehensive report describing the design and operation of all types of electric brass furnaces and showing their performance in experimental tests on a commercial scale is in course of preparation. However, commercial tests of several new and promising types of furnaces are still under way, the results of which should be included in any general discussion of the subject. For this reason it has seemed desirable to issue a preliminary bulletin giving the data on a type of furnace developed in one stage of the bureau's work.

San Juan es una de las principales provincias exportadoras de minerales en Argentina, cuya actividad minera le proporciona mayores recursos. Sin embargo, sus plantas de fabricación (molienda, trituración) producen polvos en el exterior que contaminan el medio ambiente. Por ello, los productores incorporaron nuevas tecnologías limpias que no afecten ni el desarrollo de la producción, ni el medio ambiente. En este sentido, el presente trabajo señala las aplicaciones que el Instituto de Investigaciones Mineras de la Facultad de Ingeniería de la UNSJ ha diseñado a nivel laboratorio, a través de un recuperador electrostático de polvo, el cual responde a las necesidades de los productores y cumple con el objetivo de vinculación y transferencia con el medio productivo. Asimismo, se describe el diseño de un método de recuperación de polvos y el filtro recuperador del mismo, reduciendo el nivel de polvo a un 90% y logrando un precio de venta en el mercado.

To build an effective entry roof beam, a roof bolting or supporting system must be of the ability of providing a clamping force to the bolted roof strata. Currently, two roof bolting systems are widely used to serve the purpose of providing such a clamping force. They are resin and mechanical anchorage bolting systems. Both numerical modeling and double shear testing results indicate that a greater pre-installed load or pretension of a roof bolting system is very critical for effective beam building. Although it?s generally accepted that a mechanical anchorage bolting system can provide a greater pretension than a resin anchorage bolting system does (Su and Poland, 2007 and Peng, 2008), no published field data are available to support such a conclusion. This paper analyzes the results of our field tests on both roof bolting systems, explains why one roof bolting system is better than the other under a typical roof condition, and finally discusses the effective means for coal mine operators to determine the best roof bolting system for their roof conditions.

A Discrete element computer program named DMC @istinct Motion Code) has been developed for modeling rock blasting. This program employs explicit time integration and uses spherical or cylindrical elements which are represented as circles in 2-D. DMC calculations have been compared with measurements on bench blasts in the field with relatively good comparison. Structural rock mass characteristics have a significant impact on any blast and DMC has not, until now, included these effects. This paper discusses a recently added DMC capability for treating joints and bedding planes in bench blast simulations.

The exploitation of stone (trachyte) at the ?Srebro? open pit mine, located on the northern slopes of the Fru?ka Gora National Park (Serbia) central area begun in 1964. Stone exploitation in this locality does not endanger the environment in an ecological sense, does not pose a threat to plants and animals, and apart from the terrain configuration changes, it did not leave behind permanent consequences to the environment. Projects for permanent cessation of mining operations and for land reclamation and spatial arrangement were completed in these circumstances. The paper gives a short review of the condition at the open pit mine; furthermore, the key problems and basic demands are presented, together with a concept of technical and biological land reclamation and the spatial arrangement of the mining complex. Geological Parameters Controlling the Improvement of Manufactured Sand Using Vertical Shaft Impact Crushers Instead of Cone Crushers Natural sand is a limited resource. In Sweden the total use of natural sand and gravel is around 20 million tonnes per year and the goal is to halve the use of this resource in the near future. Most of this natural sand is used for concrete production, so the consequence of this goal is that more and more concrete must be produced with manufactured sand. The bedrock of Sweden consists mainly of granites and gneisses, rock types mainly composed of various amounts of quartz, feldspar and mica. Manufactured sand from these materials generally contains rather flaky and elongated grains, and there are few types of granite that can be used as manufactured sand in concrete without increasing the amount of cement by eight to ten per cent. A Vertical Shaft Impact crusher (VSI) is commonly used to improve the shape of coarse aggregate particles. Research has shown that it is even possible to improve the shape in aggregate fractions less than 1 mm for some rock types. The aim of this project was to investigate which geological parameters control the improvement of manufactured sand when using VSI-crushers instead of the traditionally used cone crusher. In order to do this eight rock types of granitic composition were investigated. The selection of rock materials for the tests was based on grain size and mica content. A 4 - 8 mm fraction of each material was used for the tests. The characterisation of the shape of the material was performed using image analysis applied on microscopic images. The results showed that the VSI-crusher had improved the shape of all materials down to 0.036 mm, except for one rock sample. According to these results granites with low mica content and relatively high content of feldspars have the best prerequisites to produce manufactured sand for concrete with suitable geometric characteristics, and if these materials are crushed with a VSI crusher they almost show the same characteristics as natural sand.

Comminution and flotation circuits are frequently perturbed by disturbances, such as feed particle size variations, ore hardness and varying mineral liberation, which can have a significant impact on the recoveries and grades. Although advanced control strategies can neutralize many of these disturbances, few such systems have been implemented at present. One reason is that it is only recently that the requisite sensor systems have been developed and used to control froth flotation systems. Another is owed to the complexity of these non-linear interactive systems. In this paper, a plant-wide control strategy is considered, wherein both unit operations have a single overall control objective. The automated design of the controller is based on an advanced evolutionary algorithm viz., Symbiotic, Memetic Neuro-Evolution (SMNE), for developing neural network controllers in a reinforcement learning framework. A rigorous phenomenological comminution and flotation model was used to develop suitable neurocontrollers, which used all possible sensor inputs and available manipulated variables. The neurocontroller managed to identify optimal or near-optimal operating conditions consistently and showed robust performance in the presence of significant disturbances. The results suggest that evolutionary reinforcement learning offers a very competitive approach towards the development of integrated non-linear controllers for mineral processing plants. It has been thought in the past that New Zealand had ample coal reserves, able to provide fossil fuel supplies well into the future. Such is not the case and every effort must be made to achieve the highest possible extraction rate in all new coal mining ventures. While the relative cost and availability of completion or fuels has been largely responsible for the slow growth of coal production in the past, a world shortage of fuels has given coal a new importance and required better utilisation of coal reserves. New mining ventures in thick-seam coal deposits cannot be planned and designed without geotechnical investigations designed to provide information required by the mining engineer and analyst. Finite element analysis of mine workings may provide essential information on the optimisation of mining techniques and the design of underground support and roadway shapes.

The Bureau of Mines has reviewed those portions of the "Tariff Schedules of the United States Annotated 1963" that are of interest to the minerals industry. This study shows to what extent rates of duty were altered (increased or decreased), and provides a bridge where possible from the old Schedule A classification sys tem to the new TSUS system of statistical reporting of import data. In general the new tariff has corrected previous classification defects and inconsistencies, but the rates of duties have not been materially changed.

Liquified petroleum gas mixed with oxygen has been used as a new type of mixed gas source for gas detonating system. The experimental studies have been done on the detonation feature of gas detonating transmission in a long and thin tube, the transmitting reliability for detonating network, the design on gas exploder and test devices. The results of the study show that (1 )Liquified petroleum mixed with oxygen can be used as a new type of regular gas source. (2)The transmission of detonating wave is reliable for new type of mixed gas in a 500-meter long plastic tube with 3mm inner diameter and the detonating velocity is up to 2500m/s. The detonating wave can surely initiate and transmit several branched gas detonating cap and explosive through the end of detonating network, the tubes inner diameter for the detonating quenching is 0. I’mm. (3)The gas exploder designed by authors can be used for gas propotional distribution,strong turbulence-mixing,initiating by reflex shock wave and safety control purposes. The developed double flowmeter can be used together or seperately in responsible for main testing in the system.

Longwall mines typically use some form of standing support for secondary roof support in longwall tailgate entries. Although there have been several new support products developed for this application, there remains no universal design criteria to optimize the application of these support technologies. The requirement for optimization and proper support selection is to understand the degree of control that the support has on the ground behavior. The ground reaction curve and numerical modeling was used to evaluate the impact of standing support on ground behavior. LaModel was used to evaluate the impact of standing support on main roof and floor behavior and pillar yielding. The conclusion drawn from this study was that standing supports do not have sufficient capacity to control main roof or floor loading or prevent the resulting convergence of the tailgate entry. However, it is imperative that this “uncontrollable convergence” be considered in the support design to prevent premature failure of the support. A FLAC model was used to evaluate the near-seam roof and floor behavior in conjunction with the global vertical and horizontal stresses. The model suggests that standing roof supports can have some impact on the ground behavior as the elastic response of the rock is exceeded and rock structure deteriorates from the stress concentrations that develop around the tailgate opening. During this phase, the capacity and stiffness of the standing support can be critical to the stability of the opening, as eventually the rock mass will be transformed into a partially detached structure whose weight must be supported by the standing support. This work is part of a ground control program of research at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) aimed at improving mine safety by reducing roof fall injuries and fatalities.

The use of scrapers in mining and earthmoving operations is not new, in fact they are one of the earliest methods of bulk earthmoving. A single machine which can load, haul, and dump material with a minimum of ancilliary support is a highly productive and cost-efficient method of earthmoving. In recent times scrapers have been unpopular due to perceived problems and operational limitations, but the last couple of years have seen a resurgence in the use of scrapers in the Bowen Basin as a primary prestripping tool. The main operational limitation of scrapers is the economic operating range. maximum productivity and lowest cost per bcm is achieved on short leads, as the lead distance increases the cost per bcm quickly reaches and then overtakes that of an truck-excavator fleet. The geometry of a ætraditionalÆ coal mine does not readily allow short leads for prestrip fleets due to the nature of dragline stripping operations. The strip arrangement means that material has to be taken around the end of the pit, meaning a longer haul distance than the actual point-to-point distance between load and dump. This can be alleviated by using pit bridges, however these can cause spoil problems for draglines if not properly planned and have been avoided by many mines. Due to the economic haul distance limitation of scrapers, truck-excavator fleets have become the normal method utilised. Currently more geologically complex mines are opening up, which do not allow traditional down-dip strip mining to occur. Cross-dip mining methods allow for short leads between prestrip loading and dumping areas, hence scrapers and bulk doze are realistic alternatives to a truck-excavator fleet in the prestrip environment. Keeping the lead distance to a minimum a fleet of 657Æs can move material at a very low cost. The other main operational limitation of scrapers is the type of material that can be economically excavated. Hard material can lead to damage to the bowl, free-flowing sand will not readily stay in the bowl leading to reduced load factors. Ripping the material with a dozer prior to excavating can lead to improved loading time, and greatly reduced GET consumption. When considering scrapers for prestrip operations a number of things must be considered: is the lead distance within the economic haul distance? should twin power (push-pull) or single power (dozer pushed) scrapers be used? do I need to rip, what should I rip with? what ancilliary support is required? is there another system already available on-site which is currently under utilised? This paper considers the parameters under which large twin power scrapers are the most effective way of undertaking prestrip operations.

A novel hydrometallurgical process for copper concentrate treatment has been developed by Niihama Research Laboratories of Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. The process has numerous advantages with respect to the operational and environmental aspects. For example, copper is leached effectively from chalcopyrite concentrates by chlorine gas under atmospheric pressure. The copper in the leach solution is then separated from iron and silver by solvent extraction and undergoes electrowinning for its recovery as a highly pure copper metal; this does not require any further purification. Moreover, iron metal can be produced from the purified raffinate by electrowinning without generating a large volume of goethite or hematite, which are solid wastes generated due to iron rejection in common hydrometallurgical processes. This process can also realize the efficient recovery of precious metals. The results of batch testing and continuous-operation testing are presented in this paper.

Coal bumps remain one of the industry?s most devastating but least understood phenomena. If changes to the internal conditions of the rock mass could be observed there is hope that bumps could be forecasted. Seismic tomography has been used over the past 25 years in an attempt to image these changing conditions in the vicinity of the longwall face. This paper describes the history and practical considerations of using seismic tomography in bump-prone coal mines. The implementation of seismic tomography at six different longwall mines will be described along with lessons learned. Early studies used mining independent sources of seismic energy, including explosives and sledgehammers. Subsequently more operator friendly sources, such as the mining equipment itself and mining-induced seismicity, were used. Seismic energy sensors have been placed in gateroads and on the surface above the mine. Each of these configurations has associated advantages and disadvantages. Although the results obtained have been encouraging, the application of seismic tomography to monitoring a bump-prone longwall face is still immature. The ultimate goal of clearly imaging changing stress conditions in the longwall panel in a manner that does not inhibit mining operation is still distant, yet drawing nearer. When this goal is achieved, the industry will have a capable tool for identifying locations where bumps are imminent.
