The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal in the United States suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known measured and indicated recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making. This is the eighth of a series of reports giving the results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. (See appendix.) This report covers Jefferson County, Pa., which comprises parts of Marienville, Hallton, Ridgway, Brookville, DuBois, Penfield, Smicksburg, and Punxsutawney quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A short resume of the chemical and carbonizing properties of the coals is included. Data on the coal beds in the county were obtained from mining companies, land companies, individual landowners, and other sources of authentic information. A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick, These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps. Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

San Juan Coal Company (SJCC) operates an underground coal mine near Farmington, New Mexico. Continuous miners and a longwall produce 7-8 million tons per year. The coal seam at SJCC has tested to have a propensity for spontaneous combustion. As such, during feasibility for this project, it was elected to utilize a bleederless ventilation system on the longwall. Three-entry gateroads are developed, and the longwall gob is sealed as mining progresses. SJCC utilizes a nitrogen injection system to continuously inertize the gob. In 2004, the mine was nearing completion of its first longwall district. The next district would contain longer panels (up to 12,500 feet). Due to the liberation of methane, and to a lesser extent hydrogen sulfide, a typical wrap-around ventilation system would not be appropriate. Not only would gas concentrations likely be challenging, but the overall ventilating pressure in the mine would have to be increased beyond limits established to mitigate the potential for spontaneous combustion. Given the above-described operating constraints, SJCC determined a need for a small ventilation shaft in the back (longwall setup area) of the next district that would draw adequate air past the longwall seals to maintain low gas levels and permit the required regulatory inspections to occur. Extensive ventilation modeling and gas desorption testing indicated that the shaft would be required to handle a volume of air ranging from 40,000 cfm to as high as 185,000 cfm. This large range is driven by the position of the longwall face with respect to the shaft and the effectiveness of the SJCC degasification program (SJCC uses vertical gob vent boreholes and horizontal in-seam methods). Ventilation simulations determined an appropriate diameter for the 350-ft-deep shaft to be 5 feet. Having determined shaft size, the next decision related to the method of shaft construction. Conventional shaft sinking was ruled out, due to the small diameter. Raise boring was an attractive option but had two drawbacks: (1) development crews would reach the bottom of the shaft just a few weeks before longwall startup, leaving a compressed timeframe to install the shaft, and (2) raiseboring requires additional underground entries to be developed to stow the project’s cuttings. While raiseboring remained a viable option, the problems associated with it led SJCC to also investigate blind drilling.

With ever-increasing global demand for mineral resources, numerous mines are moving towards developing and mining deeper, more complex and lower grade ore bodies. In many cases, mass mining methods (e.g. block caving) are being considered to deal with deeper, lower grade deposits. The body of practical knowledge, however, related to the impacts mass mining methods have on the surface environment in terms of rock mass response, subsidence, etc., is limited, imposing both economic risks to the mine and safety risks to mine personnel. This paper presents the framework for and preliminary results from a large collaborative research initiative between Diavik Diamond Mines, Rio Tinto, the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Simon Fraser University (SFU). The project involves the integration of available subsidence, rock mass, mine operation and monitoring data, together with the advanced application of combined finite/discrete-element modelling codes capable of simulating fracture behaviour, cave propagation and surface subsidence above block cave mines. The main objective of this work is to develop advanced numerical modelling methods to characterize complex rock mass behaviour above block cave mines. The research will also include the study of rock deformation mechanisms associated with the transition from surface to underground mining and the potential interaction between simultaneous open-pit and underground mining operations.

The Bureau of Mines examined the Bear Canyon RARE II area in 1982. The area has no identified mineral deposits. The few claims that were located in the study area are devoid of any workings. No concentrations of economic minerals were found in the samples taken. There are no mineral, geothermal, or oil and gas leases in the area; the nearest oil well is 10 mi (16 km) east. The nearest mining operation was the Ruby Gold Placer worked in 1914, 7 mi (11 km) southeast (Hart, 1966, p. 45); the Pliocene Paso Robles Formation which contained the gold does not extend into the area. SETTING The Bear Canyon RARE II area covers 19.7 sq mi (51 sq km) or 12,600 acres (1500 ha) in west-central California. It lies in the Santa Lucia Range 10 mi (16 km) southwest of King City and adjoins the southeast side of the Ventana Wilderness. It is 10 mi (16 km) from the Pacific Ocean. Primary access is by the San Antonio River road on the Hunter Liggett Military Reservation, which parallels the area's southern border. Further access to the area's interior is by jeep and foot trails.

In 2004, management at Unimin’s Gleason, TN operation began implementing ergonomic interventions specifically targeted to reduce risk of musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs). Together with corporate and site management, Unimin identified work site hazards and began to modify work practices/equipment. Some interventions were relatively simple and were implemented immediately. Others, like improvements to a mobile shredder, were more complex but were eventually resolved through a participatory approach with employees, management, manufacturers and NIOSH. This paper discusses ergonomic interventions that were successfully implemented using a bottom-up approach to reducing the risk of injury.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of leaching zinc from the tailing (-2 mm) of Angouran flotation plant using sulphuric acid. The tails were first calcined at 800¦C for one hour. The effect of factors such as stirring rate, temperature, initial acid concentration and solid/liquid ratio, on zinc extraction were studied. The results obtained show that at the best conditions, about 91 per cent of zinc were leached using a stirring rate of 800 rpm, a reaction temperature of 50¦C, a 30 minute reaction time, a 100 g/L initial sulphuric acid concentration and solid:liquid ratio 1:6 g/ml. The P85 of the feed material was about 150 ¦m and acid consumption was 600 kg/t.

Most analysts determining tungsten trioxide in low grade samples are aware that colorimetric procedures do not possess the inherent disadvantages of gravimetric methods operating on milligram quantities of tungsten trioxide. Apart from the inaccuracies associated with weighing four or five milligrams of ignited oxide in a platinum crucible of about 30 gm. weight with a large surface area to absorb moisture, using a 5 gm. charge on samples less than about 0·15 per cent tungsten trioxide, it is extremely difficult toget complete or pure precipitation of tungsten with cinchonine, cinchonine plus alpha benzoin oxime, rhodamine B or any other of the commonly used precipitants. Table 2', No. 8, illustrates the low results obtained by gravimetric as opposed to colorimetric procedures. In addition the colorimetric determination requires only a small portion of the time consumed by gravimetric practices and the increased accuracy obtainable in low ranges together with the saving in time made it highly desirable to develop a colorimetric method suitable for King Island ores.The most commonly used colorimetric method is that introduced by Feigl and Krumholz (1932), since modified by various investigators (Grimaldi and North, 1943; Sandell, 1946; Westwood and Mayer, 1947; Gentry and Sherrington, 1948; Freund, Wright and Brookshier, 1951; Grouthamel and Johnson, 1954; and others). "In 2010, closure of the Kidd metallurgical plants along with structural changes to the historical ratios of payable metals led to a review of the operating targets at the Kidd concentrator. Previous operating data indicated that there was potential for significant revenue improvements by lowering the copper concentrate grade. An extended plant trial was carried out in 2011 to quantify the revenue impact of lowering the copper concentrate grade from 27% to 25% Cu, as well as identifying the lower practical grade limit. Analysis of plant trial results indicated that the process change increased net concentrate revenue by $2 M to $3 M per year at current metal prices. Increased revenue was primarily associated with higher silver recovery to the copper concentrate while the marginally improved copper recovery was essentially offset by increased zinc losses and concentrate treatment and freight charges.Details of the plant test work results are discussed in this paper along with the financial analysis of the revenue improvements. Key areas covered are major revenue components of the concentrate contracts, validation of revenue improvements through plant testing and sensitivity of the improvements to market and plant variables.INTRODUCTIONThe Xstrata Copper Kidd concentrator commenced operations in 1966 treating ore from the nearby Kidd volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit in Timmins, Ontario (Thompson, Amsden, & Chapman, 1978). Over the years, up to four separate grinding-flotation divisions were in operation with throughput rates peaking at 4.5 million tonnes per year of ore in the mid 1980’s (Kelebek & Francis, 1998). As the mine production decreased and grinding throughput increased operations were gradually cut back and since 1998 two grinding-flotation divisions have been in operation treating Kidd mine ore. One of the idled divisions has been intermittently used for custom milling operations, most recently the Ni/Cu Montcalm deposit, which was milled from 2004 to 2009. Current budget throughput rates, limited by mine production, are 2.4 million tonnes per year of ore grading 1.7% Cu, 4.3% Zn and 55 g/mt Ag. Concentrate production rates are 150,000 tonnes per year of copper concentrate and 155,000 tonnes per year of zinc concentrate. The Kidd mine is the deepest base metal mine in the world with mining operations down to 9600 ft.In 2010 the copper and zinc plants at the Kidd metallurgical site, which previously treated the concentrate production from the Kidd concentrator, ceased operation due to a variety of economic and market factors. Following the metallurgical plant closures the Kidd concentrator products were shipped off site for treatment. The majority of the copper concentrate is now processed at the Xstrata Copper Horne smelter in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec with the majority of the zinc concentrate processed at Canadian Electrolytic Zinc Ltd. in Valleyfield, Quebec."

To obtain the combustion process of a coal fire, a high-temperature programmed system is used to simulate the spontaneous combustion process of fresh and weathered coals. Both fresh coal and weathered coals from Liulingou, Inner Mongolia, China, were used to examine the gas releases from constant temperature to 650°C. Moreover, gas release rate was used to calculate the characteristic temperatures. The results showed the coal samples lasted to oxidise under high temperatures, and released plenty of heat to assist self-heating. The humic acid contained inside the weathered coal went through thermal decomposition as temperature rising and generated gases. This resulted in increasing concentrations of CO, CO2, CH4, C2H4, and C2H6. Changes of CH4, C2H4, and C2H6 gases were also similar. For weathered coal, concentrations of three gases were kept in balance under low temperatures, increased rapidly with the temperature rising. After the ignition temperature, the concentration of hydrocarbon was reduced. In addition, particle size affected coal spontaneous combustion. Coal samples with less than 0.9 mm in size produced much more CO than others. The Brunswick plant is located in Costerfield, approximately 40km east of Bendigo in central Victoria. Crushing, grinding, gravity gold concentration and flotation methods are used to produce a saleable gold concentrate and an antimony-gold flotation concentrate. This paper discusses the improvements made within the processing plant which have resulted in a 99% increase in throughput over nameplate capacity of 6 250 average tonnes per month to 12 445 average tonnes per month and increases of 12% gold (from 2007 average of 78% to 2014 average of 90%) and 16% antimony recovery (from 2007 average of 79% to 2015 average of 95%). "The dangerous nature of explosives makes them a potential hazard wherever they are used, but they are likely to exercise their greatest harmfulness under conditions inherent in coal mining. The ease with which explosives can be detonated and the suddenness and violence with which they detonate require great care in their handling and use, if acci-dents are to be avoided. Campaigns have been waged by the manufacturers, the Federal Bureau of Mines, coal-mining companies, and other agencies to educate users of explosives in their dangers and in their proper use and care.Probably 95 percent of the explosives accidents can be attributed to poor judgment, carelessness, negligence, or chance taking. In many explosives accidents it is difficult to determine the cause definitely, as the evidence of the origin is destroyed by the blast and frequently those involved have been killed. Survivors of the accident often are of little help in determining the cause, as the accident occurs so suddenly they cannot tell what happened or prefer not to divulge the information they have because it may point to their own carelessness.A survey has indicated that about 10 percent of all fatalities in coal mines were caused by explosives accidents (excluding gas and dust explosions initiated by explosives). A list of explosives accidents by States, from 1925 to 1932, classified according to the severity of the accidents, indicated that Kentucky and Wyoming had the greatest number of fatalities resulting from explosives accidents. Records of the Bureau of Mines show that 14 coal-mine explosions occurred from January 1 to June 1, 1943. Explosives were involved in four of these explosions. Black powder caused two of the accidents and permissible explosives used in a nonpermissible manner the other two. These statistics are mentioned to show that explosives are still causing severe accidents.Elimination of the hazards associated with explosives begins on the surface. Storage magazines should have no opening, except for entrance and ventilation; ventilators should be screened effectively to prevent the admittance of sparks as well as to prevent unauthorized entrance. The interior should be kept clean and dry, and the floor should be of nonsparking material with no metal exposed. The surrounding area should be kept free of combustible material for not less than 25 feet (and preferably 50 feet) in all directions. Storage magazines should be fire-resistant and reasonably bulletproof."

"Slurry «viscosity» has been recognised for several decades as a variable that significantly influences the operation of grinding mills. This paper describes an instrument that can be used in a laboratory or a plant to measure and monitor the flow properties of mineral slurries. Laboratory results obtained for two different ore samples are consistent with results obtained during a full scale trial. The results provide a basis for analysing the effect of the solids concentration and particle size distribution on the slurry flow properties. Grinding tests were also conducted in an attempt to link the grinding efficiency to the rheological properties of mineral slurries.INTRODUCTIONThe flow properties, or incorrectly called «viscosity», of a slurry influence the operation of mineral processing devices. Work has been conducted for instance to assess the effect of this variable on the operation of hydrocyclones (Kawatra et al. 1996; Klimpel, 1982a) and dense media separators for coal (Napier-Munn, 1996). However, most of the research effort has been oriented toward the grinding processes which is still the most energy demanding operation for ore dressing (Fuerstenau et al., 1995).Results of investigations of the influence of slurry flow properties upon grinding performances are presented regularly in the literature since 1950. In the 70's, most of the research work was conducted with the aim of using slurry flow properties for the control of grinding mill and to analyze the effect of that variable upon the population balance model breakage and rate functions (Austin et al., 1984; Hemmings et Boyes, 1977). In the 80's, most of the litterature dealing with slurry rheology was devoted to the use of viscosity modifiers to adjust the slurry flow properties, allowing an increase of grinding mill throughputs (Klimpel, 1982b; Fuerstenau et al., 1985). Although laboratory and pilot plant results show the benefits of adding these modifiers to the slurry, few plants have published results concerning the advantages of such addition (Fuerstenau et al., 1985). It is felt that the use of these modifiers introduce operating difficulties with the concentration circuits, especially flotation (Kawatra et Eisele, 1988)."

South Coast Water District (District) operates the Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel (BIST) in South Laguna, Orange County, California between Mon-arch Beach and Aliso Beach (Figure 1). The 10,424-foot long BIST houses a 24-inch Techite gravity sewer pipeline critical to the District Sanitary Sewer Collection System that conveys 1 MGD of raw sewage to a wastewater treatment plant. The original tunnel was constructed in 1954 and the sewer line replaced in 1974. Periodic inspections by sewer pipeline maintenance crews have documented deterioration of specific intervals of the tunnel within the past few years (Sancon 2003). Rotting timber supports and rock falls in the tunnel as a result of the deterioration were endangering the sewer pipeline. A 50-foot section of the tunnel was determined to be in need of immediate repairs, which were carried out from January to August in 2007. This section was enlarged to a horseshoe shape and lined with shotcrete. The pipe was encased in concrete in the invert of the new enlarged cross section. Hatch Mott Mac-Donald (HMM) designed the emergency repairs, carried out an assessment of the rest of the tunnel alignment, and is currently developing a work plan for rehabilitating the entire tunnel.

This paper updates an earlier report by the authors that studied electrical injuries from 1992 to 1998. The previous information is expanded and supplemented with fatal and nonfatal injury rates and trends through 2002. Injury numbers and rates were used to compare and trend electrical injury experience for various groups and categories. This information allowed identification of at-risk groups that could most benefit from effective electrical safety interventions. The data presented in this paper are derived from the U.S. Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), Survey of Occupational Illnesses and Injuries (SOII) and Current Population Survey (CPS). Between 1992 and 2002, 3,378 workers died from on-the-job electrical injuries. Electricity remained the sixth leading cause of injury-related occupational death. From 1999 through 2002, 4.7% of all occupational deaths were caused by electricity, down from 5.2% in the 1992 to 1998 time period. The cause of death was listed as electrocution in 99.1% of fatal cases. Contact with overhead power lines was involved in 42% of all on-the-job electrical deaths. The construction industry accounted for 47% of all electrical deaths between 1992 and 2002, but showed overall improvement from 1995 through 2002 by reducing its electrical fatality rate from 2.2 to 1.5 per 100,000 workers. An additional 46,598 workers were nonfatally injured by electricity. Contact with electric current of machine, tool, appliance, or light fixture and contact with wiring, transformers, or other electrical components accounted for 36% and 34% of nonfatal electrical injuries, respectively. Contact with underground, buried power lines was involved with 1% of fatal injuries and 2% of nonfatal injuries. NIOSH research aimed at evaluating commercially available overhead power line proximity warning alarms is described. This research is expected to be the initial step for eventual development of a performance standard for such systems.

Replacement of an existing movable bridge with a new low level fixed bridge would not accommodate potential future navigation traffic. In order to replace the existing bridge in a cost effective manner, while accommodating the potential future needs of the Port of Salem, a new bridge was proposed that would permit conversion to a vertical lift type movable bridge should a potential need for upstream navigation warrant such a project in the future. Drilled shafts were found to be the most desirable foundation type for the replacement of the Route 49 Bridge over Salem River. Their ability to resist scour, be constructed without cofferdams, adequately resist vessel collision forces, and accommodate conversion to a future vertical lift bridge allowed the project to meet both the needs of the New Jersey Department of Transportation and the Port of Salem.

With increasing energy costs and mounting government pressure to adopt low emission, green sources of energy, it has become imperative to develop long-term sustainable underground infrastructures that exhibit low power consumption. Underground mining environments are mandated to have ventilation systems in place to replace polluted air with clean air. Continuously running air ventilation systems have proven to be an expensive solution for this requirement. Ventilation-on-demand (VOD) is a cost effective method for not only reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gasses, but also ensuring the safety and well-being of the miners beneath the surface. VOD is achieved by monitoring the air quality in target areas of the mine, and based on variables such as the number of personnel in the area, the number of emission-emitting vehicles, the air leakage around doors and entrances, dust levels, and other key environmental details, the speed and angles of the fan blades are adjusted to increase or decrease the volume of air flow. For over 40 years, Conspec Controls has been developing systems capable of VOD through the use of controllers, gas monitors and personnel/vehicle tracking equipment, providing inexpensive, reliable solutions for underground ventilation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the Domeland Addition (5207) and Woodpecker (5206) RARE II areas during the summer of 1979. These study areas were examined to determine the presence or absence of mineral resources and reserves and where possible, to estimate values. The study areas are 9 air mi northeast of Kernville, California, and encompass 47,400 acres of primarily granitic rocks of the Sierra Nevada batholith with some scattered exposures of older metasedimentary, volcanic, and metavolcanic rocks. These other rock units partially surround the exposed batholith in the Domeland Wilderness and consist mostly of late Paleozoic quartzites, mica schists, marbles, and meta-volcanics, Mesozoic quartz diorite and gabbro intrusives, and local Tertiary basalt and andesite flows.

This paper presents the results of a research investigation leading to the development of a technique for the measurement of the surface permeability of Indiana Limestone. The tests are conducted on a cuboidal block of the limestone with a flat surface that can be sealed to create a circular aperture through which water influx can take place. Computational results for Darcy flow are used to interpret the results of the experiments. The water entry area can be moved over the surface area of the block to investigate, quite conveniently, the distribution of permeability across the surface of the limestone block sample.
