There were present twelve- Directors, the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary of the Institute, and fifteen guests. A committee of three was appointed to draft a suitable resolution of memorial of the services of Joseph Esrey Johnson, Jr. The committee consists of Joseph W. Richards, Chairman, J. V. N. Dorr and Allen H. Rogers. William R. Walker was elected a Director in place of J. E. Johnson, Jr., and Edwin Ludlow was elected a member of the Executive Committee in his stead. George C. Stone was appointed Chairman of the Committee on Membership in place of Mr. Johnson. The following resolutions were then adopted: RESOLVED, That a special business meeting of the Institute be and the same hereby is appointed to be, held at the office of the Institute, No. 29 West 39th Street, Borough of Manhattan, City of New York, on the 27th day of June, 1919, it 8.30 o'clock in the P. M. to consider and take action upon the proposal to change the name of the Institute to "American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Incor-porated," and the further proposal to extend the corporate purposes of the Institute so that it shall, in addition to its other powers, be empowered to promote the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of, those employed in these industries, by all lawful means.

[An economic trading region made up of 22 eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana counties, with Spokane, Washington as the central place, was defined for this study. modeling system with the, 1985 county database was to create an Input/Output based model of the regional economy. The leading ice, with respect to income, employment, value of exports, and total industry output are shown for each county and the region. The value of total industry output from natural resource based industries is also shown for each county and the region. Interindustry transactions, final demand, and value added components for the region are shown in the Regional Gross Flows Table. The total gross output for the region is valued at $36.7 billion. Total industry output for the region is $18.1 billion. The region provides $5.4 billion in income to a work force of 286,000. Spokane County, Washington accounts for about 50 percent of the regional total industry output, income, and employment. Both Spokane County and then as a whole produce about 80 percent of the total industry output for final demand with remaining 20 percent going to intermediate inputs for further production. Spokane County exports about 43 percent of its total output while 35 of the regional output is exported. Exports account for more 50 percent of the total in 18 of the 22 counties within the region. This publication reports on the design, fabrication and test of an Improved methane monitor system for compliance to 30CFR75.313. The system will Initiate automatic shutdown of mining machinery when excessive concentrations of methane are encountered. The prime consideration: In the design were small size, Improved accuracy and reliability, fast response and a transient resistant power supply capable of reliable operation from any mine power source. The power supply contains an internal battery that provides operating power to the detection system prior to mining machine start-up or after machine shutdown. This report documents the development program from conception through in-mine testing.

Mintek developed the MinataurTM leach-solvent extraction-precipitation technology as a cost effective, easily operated alternative to conventional gold refining processes. The technology was first commercialized at the Harmony Gold Refinery in 1997 to produce 99.99 per cent gold product and has subsequently led to development of various value-addition steps including the casting of various investment bars, gold wire drawing and gold potassium cyanide powder production. In addition to refining gold to high purity, if an appreciable amount of silver is present in the feed material it is also refined to 99.99 per cent purity. The major advantage that the Minataur? technology has over other gold refining processes is the relatively low gold lock-up and reduced operating costs. The operating cost1as at April 2001 for the expanded Harmony refinery (24-ton per annum gold production) was approximately half that of conventional smelting and toll refining. The extractant employed for solvent extraction is relatively cheap and highly selective for gold, making the technology attractive in situations where significant quantities of platinum group metals or base metals are present.

The technical literature on the general subject of crushing contains many references to the work of investigators on the laws governing, and the factors entering into, the economical production of fine materials. In fine grinding, whether for the purpose of producing fine material, or for the unlocking of minerals in an ore, close control of the screen sizes of primary-crusher products is of secondary consideration and accordingly has received very little attention. The growth and development of the nonmetallic industries, however, have drawn more attention to primary crushing. Many of these industries are interested in the production of relatively coarse products that meet certain definite size specifications, a condition entirely different from that existing in the field of ore dressing. Under such conditions, a knowledge of the factors governing the selection and operation of primary-crushing equipment is essential to the economical production of a satisfactory material.

Eng.(Metallurgical Engineering) degree The interrelationship between mineral liberation and leaching behaviour of a gold ore is ill defined, mainly due to the complexity of both leaching and mineral liberation. This study presents a neural network approach to modelling the liberation of gold bearing ores. A complete mineralogical analysis of unmilled and milled ores, including gold deportment and gangue content are used as inputs to a self-organizing neural net, which generates order preserving topological maps. The arrangement and shapes of these clusters are coupled to unmilled free gold data to predict gold liberation in milled ores (absolute error: 8.1%). Moreover, the self-organizing maps were diagnostic of the quality of data used, indicating that the relationship between particle size and gangue material content requires further investigation.

Polymeric composites reinforced with natural fibers are increasingly been used in several engineering applications, from automotive parts to building construction elements. In addition to the relatively low cost, the natural fibers are also appraised by their renewable and biodegradable characteristics. Fibers extracted from the crust of coconut fruits, also known as coir fibers have been investigated for a possible use in composite materials. In the present work, the coirfiber/polyester matrix interfacial strength was evaluated by means of pullout tests. The variation of the pullout tensile stress vs. the embedded coir fiber length permitted to determine the critical fiber length and, thus, to calculate the interfacial strength. Observations by SEM complemented the results from pullout tests, indicating that coir fibers have a potential for application aspolymeric composites that could replace conventional materials such as wooden and gypsumpanels.

Abstract Hydraulic fracturing is a technology that has been utilized for more than 50 years in the oil industry. It was originally used for stimulating hard, brittle formations which typically exhibit low permeabilities and roughly linear elastic behavior. Nonetheless, an increasingly important segment of the industry is currently stimulating very soft and poorly consolidated formations; where the assumptions of ideal elasticity and relatively small fluid leakoff fail to hold (e.g. Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, Alaska, East China). In these rocks, hydraulic fracturing stimulation has been used for several years to control and solve critical production problems such as sanding and formation damage (caused during completion and drilling operations). Although successful1, the application of this method has not been accompanied by robust fracturing modeling techniques. In addition, long term production increases were often not materialized. In other words, engineers have been able, via trial-and-error, to avoid major ‘operational’ problems but with no optimization of such treatments. Thus, most hydraulic fracturing projects carried out in poorly consolidated rocks render unexpected results. A recent worldwide survey on net pressures by the Delft Fracturing Consortium (Papanastasiou, 1997) indicated that net pressures encountered in the field are 50% to 100% higher than the net pressures predicted by conventional fracturing simulators. The difference is yet higher for the case of poorly consolidated formations (Pak, 1997). The theory for the construction of a fully coupled elastoplastic three-dimensional hydrofrac simulator, specifically conceived for unconsolidated rocks, is presented in this paper. This novel model calculates the dimensions and changes in shape of the fracture(s) being created during hydraulic fracturing operations. No assumptions are made regarding either shape or geometry of the crack(s). Three main failure criteria are used simultaneously in this model: tensile and shear stresses, and volumetric strain. Incremental forms of the governing equations of equilibrium and fluid flow are presented. The scheme chosen for solving this problem is the finite elements method, which allows both equations to be solved simultaneously at any instant in time. Résumé La fracturation hydraulique est une technologie qu’a été utilisé pour plus que 50 ans dans l'industrie pétrolière. Elle a été utilisée au début pour stimuler les formations dure et fragile que typiquement ont des perméabilités basses et un comportement élastique à peu près linéaire. Néanmoins, un segment plus important de l'industrie stimule actuellement des formations mal consolidées; où les suppositions d'élasticité idéale et de relativement petite fuite de fluide ne se tiennent pas raison (par exemple le Golfe de Mexique, l'Afrique d'ouest, Alaska, la Chine de l'est). Dans ces roches, la stimulation avec fracturation hydraulique a été utilisée pour plusieurs années pour contrôler et résoudre les problèmes critiques de production comme les dommages de formation et d’ensablement (causé pendant les opérations de l'accomplissement et forage). Bien que prospère, l'application de cette méthode n'a pas été accompagnée de techniques robustes pour le modelage de fractures. En outre, les augmentations à long terme de production n'ont pas été souvent concrétisées. Results are presented of a census of the machines used in surface coal mines in the United States. The numbers of each machine type and model reported to be in use are tabulated for large and small mines in the Eastern, Central, and Western regions. Also tabulated are the average daily usage times of the major machine categories and the numbers of machines that have acoustical and other cabs. Projections of the total numbers of primary production machines are given. It is found that heavy tracked dozers and wheeled front end loaders constitute the most prevalent machine types, and that generally a very few models of machines made by one or two manufacturers constitute a major fraction of the population in each machine category. About 70 percent of all machines are reported to have some kind of cab, and about half of these are reported to be acoustical gabs; it is noted that acoustical cabs generally came into significant use since about the early 1970's. It is observed that the percentage-wise mixes of equipment types used in the various categories of mines differ significantly for only a few types of machines, notably for heavy dozers and loaders, and for haulers, highway trucks, and internal-combustion engine-powered shovels and draglines.

This paper describes the use of post- tensioned rock anchors to reduce the risk of future damage to a residential structure as a result of coal mine subsidence. The project described in this paper was performed by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) of the U. S. Department of the Interior. The OSMRE was created to administer Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. The responsibilities of OSMRE include "reclamation and restoration of land and water resources, adversely affected by past coal mining including prevention, abatement, control of coal mine subsidence. ?('l) Consequently, OSMRE has been addressing mine subsidence problems since its initial subsidence stabilization project in 1979. Stabilization activities have primarily consisted of supporting the overburden material by injecting materials through drilled bore holes into the underground mine voids. Injection of various materials into mine voids, including fly ash mixtures, coal refuse, cement grout, and gravel has proven to be a successful method of reducing mine subsidence-related surface movements, and has been extensively utilized in mitigating mine subsidence problems. However, the cost of drilling for injection can be extremely high in areas where the depth to the coal seam is great.

The feasibility of using the nucleation properties of combustion generated particulates for the identification of their sources was investigated, using the Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN) Spectrometer. The Investigated materials included coal, wood, belt materials, electrical insulation, brattice cloth, and diesel exhaust. The materials were heated In an oven using filtered air flow, and their time, temperature, and the critical supersaturation spectrum of condensation nuclei (also referred to as the CCN spectrum) produced by the combusting material were recorded. Some data was obtained on a typical metal-mine background containing blasting products. The data was processed and analyzed In an attempt to specify parameters and limits that would allow the identification of the combustion sources. It appears that under controlled test conditions It Is possible to Identify the source on the basis of data derived from the CCN spectrum. More general use of the Idea for fire detection under uncontrolled practical circumstances in an actual mining environment does have potential but would require further research.

This equates to an increased visibility of operating performance, mechanical and electrical health, and predictive monitoring that can directly improve maintenance reliability and scheduling. With increased visibility, where should a reliability engineer begin to look to directly impact Capacity Assurance? More specifically, what source will provide inputs to the Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA)? Results from these analyses must be documented, and they must contribute to the overall mission of the mining company; these results must reduce costs and increase profits. Reagents are added to the flotation process of Merensky Reef ores to achieve specific functions that enable the separation of valuable minerals from gangue minerals on the basis of the difference in their surface properties. However, due to the complexity of the process, the various interactions that occur as well as the incomplete liberation of the ore and range of minerals present, it is difficult to quantify the behaviour of each of the reagents. More specifically, changes made to achieve a particular outcome may have secondary effects that can override the desired effect. If all the effects and interactions can be accounted for, it is possible to manipulate reagent suites and obtain better overall metallurgical performance. This paper discusses the effect of the addition of copper sulphate at different operating points of the recovery of the sulphide minerals. Batch flotation tests indicated that the recovery of chalcopyrite was not affected when operating conditions were varied, whereas pentlandite recovery was strongly affected by the point of reagent addition, and pyrrhotite recovery was enhanced by copper sulphate addition, irrespective of the point of addition, with the extent being dependent on the ore source. Floatable gangue was activated by copper sulphate in the presence of the dithiophosphate collector. Froth stability was also affected by copper sulphate addition.

Mintek has developed a level-control system, FloatStar, for use in flotation circuits. Instead of controlling levels separately in each unit, the controller monitors levels throughout the circuit. It can thus take account of the global effects of any control actions. A collaborative project between Mintek and Karee Platinum Mine has begun, looking at aspects of flotation control. Karee plant was chosen as the site for this work because of its good existing control infrastructure. As a first stage of the joint project FloatStar was installed. Analysis during installation and running of the FloatStar has illustrated how circuit design and measurement technology can affect process control. Severe interactions have been observed in the levels of adjacent banks. The effect of FloatStar on flotation performance was tested and an improvement in level control was observed. Similarly, a faster settling of the plant after start-ups was observed. Both the improved level control and faster start-ups lead to higher platinum recovery.

Structural properties of steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete and polymer-impregnated shotcrete, both plain and fiber-reinforced, were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines, Spokane Mining Research Center. The research center has found that flexural strengths can be increased by as much as 106 percent, and splitting-tensile strength by 50 percent, by introducing randomly oriented steel fibers. A slight decrease of compressive strength was found in the fiber-reinforced shotcrete. Polymer-impregnated shotcrete exhibited a threefold to fourfold increase in compressive and splitting-tensile strength. The techniques of preparing shotcrete with the dry process, using both fast-set agents and regulated-set cement, are described, along with the results of physical-property testing. Physical properties include compressive and splitting-tensile strengths, tangent and secant moduli, and stress-strain curves for plain shotcrete, fiber-reinforced shotcrete, and polymer-impregnated plain and fiber-reinforced shotcrete. Flexural strengths for plain and fiber-reinforced shotcrete are also reported. Steel-fiber shotcrete is the more promising of the new structural materials for ground support, and additional research is recommended.

Surface analysis by X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) of samples taken from the galena flotation section of the Hilton Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited are presented. Flotation rate and pulp chemical data taken during the sampling period are also presented and discussed. Surface analysis suggested that, under normal operating conditions, an overlayer of precipitated calcium sulfate existed at the surface of the sulfide minerals. In particular, there was a decrease in the surface concentration of calcium sulfate for the concentrate samples relative to that occurring on the tailing samples. This suggests that the flotation process was selective against minerals which have calcium sulfate predominating at the surface. Heterocoagulation of hydrophilic calcium sulfate on to the galena surface considerably reduced galena flotation rate. Methods to control calcium sulfate precipitation, which include sodium carbonate treatment of the pulp, are also discussed. Sur- face analysis results of samples taken from the Hilton Concentrator during sodium carbonate addition to the grinding circuit are also presented. This shows clear evidence for the removal of calcium sulfate from the mineral surfaces without concomitant surface precipitation of calcium carbonate. Reasons for the apparent dispersion of precipitated calcium carbonate are discussed. Galena flotation rate was increased by the addition of sodium carbonate apparently due to the removal of interfering calcium sulfate.
