The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) is the largest international geoscience project in the world, and the state-of-the-art drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, is permanently at sea. Each year there are six scientific cruises (legs) which each last approximately two months. These legs are designed by geoscientists from the nineteen countries that subscribe to ODP. Australia and Canada presently share ODP membership under the banner of the AUSCAN Consortium. The benefits of Australia's involvement in ODP include internationalisation of Australian geoscience, advanced graduate training, and unique scientific investigations of the ocean floors in the Australasian region. In addition, visits to Australian ports by the ODP drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, contribute up to $2 million per visit to the local economy. Amongst the many other aspects of ten years of scientific drilling, ODP has significantly contributed to our understanding of hydrothermal processes on the seafloor. To date, three hydrothermal sites have been drilled to date by the ODP, Snakepit (MAR), Middle Valley (Juan de Fuca Ridge) and TAG (MAR). Two more hydrothermal sites are scheduled for 1996.

The modern economic geologist in Canada is well equipped to apply geological, geochemical or geophysical techniques in the exploration for ore. Recently, great advances have been made in geophysics and geochemistry, and a large number of new orebodies have been discovered by these methods. An attempt is made in this paper to show that there has also been a considerable advancement in geological knowledge and that the most effective application of geophysics and geochemistry often occurs in areas already considered geologically favourable for the occurrence of ore. Ali exploration methods sooner or later suffer from diminishing returns. Therefore, as time goes on, one can expect to see the application of some of the more subtle or refined geological techniques that are presently being developed.

Recent investigations in the United States and in other countries have produced considerable information on the nature and occurrence of minor elements in coal. The possibility of recovering certain elements, particularly germanium and uranium, from coal ash and other coal products has received considerable attention. Some flue dusts are potential sources of germanium, and certain lignite deposits are potential sources of uranium, but industrial recovery of these elements has been limited to small quantities for technical and economic reasons. Considering the large amount of coal mined annually, a small percentage of a rare element may have industrial significance if an economical method of recovery can be developed. In 1944 information on the occurrence of rare elements in coal was reviewed in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 669 (46).3 This report is a revision of that paper with the view of summarizing published information available for United States coals, and pertinent information concerning coals of other countries. Selected references from the original paper are retained. New references do not include all preliminary reports when more permanent literature describing complete projects is available. Consequently, the list of references should not be considered complete.

Microseismic monitoring is regularly used in the mining and geotechnical industries to provide detailed information about rock mass response to operational activities. This paper implements a variable 3D velocity model (VM) at a North American hard rock mine with the aim of further improving the accuracy of seismic event locations. A collapsing method is also used to help analyse two individual seismic event clusters at another North American hard rock mine. In the first case study, the location accuracy of events is shown to improve by moving from a conventional single VM to a variable 3D VM that accounts for voids and different geological domains. The modal average for the event location accuracy improved from 14 m to 5 m when the 3D VM was used. Additionally, the single VM failed to locate 26 per cent of the seismic events that were located by the 3D VM. In the second case study, the distribution of seismic events was further enhanced by using a collapsing method that highlighted planar structures. The collapsing method was performed on two large event sequences that occurred in close proximity and identified different seismic event distributions. One aftershock sequence aligned along a plane, suggesting an activated structure, while the other large event sequence had a more 3D distribution of events, suggesting a complex stress redistribution on smaller structures.CITATION:Pinnock, I, Collins, D S, Toya, Y and Hosseini, Z, 2016. This paper discusses the lubrication of surface and underground mining machinery and equipment from the standpoint of machine components. The machine components considered are bearings, cylinders, gears, chains, couplings, fluid drives, hydraulic systems, screws and wire ropes. The best selection of lubricants for these machine components, and for sub-divisions of the components, are outlined. They form general recommendations, for average operating conditions in both surface and under-ground mining operations. The American Petroleum Institute's service classification of both engine crankcase oils and gear oils is de-scribed and used in recommending products for these applications. The practical aspect of lubrication is kept foremost in the recommendations, which are designed to meet the requirements of a wide variety of equipment with the minimum number of lubricants. THE lubrication of mining machinery and equipment presents a variety of problems peculiar to the industry. The type of mine, the ambient temperature, water, dust, and operating and maintenance practices, as well as the age and condition of the equipment, are variables which have to be considered in making lubricant recommendations.

FirstMiss Gold installed a supervisory control system based on Pavilion Technology's Process Insights neural network software and Oil System's PI data historian. The primary goal of the system was to control the acid preconditioning circuit. However, our first successful control loop was on the limestone feed rate to the neutralization circuit. The information gained by modeling these circuits and the better control provided by the system has resulted in reagent savings of over $80,000 per month.

Mesh based areal support is commonly applied in South-African deep-level gold mines. It forms part of an integrated support system that can cater for both rockfall and rockburst incidents. The application has been successfully applied over many years. Operations have different geotechnical conditions and practical considerations, which has led to the development of various types of mesh and integrated mesh-based support systems (i.e. meshing and lacing versus welded or chain-link mesh sheets). Typically rolls or sheets of mesh is pinned with rockbolts to the surface of an exposed excavation. Applications vary from hangingwall coverage in a conventional stope gully to complete excavation coverage in footwall drives of conventional mines or on-reef drives in massive mechanised mines. It is however critical to understand the behaviour of the rockmass and apply suitable support systems.

The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) and the regulations promulgated for that "Act" have resulted in changes to surface mining operations in order to comply with the stringent federally enforced reclamation requirements for prime farmland. In many instances the operator has modified surface mining operations to meet the prime farmland requirements through changes to mining equipment operation, addition of new equipment targeted for reclamation or the use of totally different mining techniques. The major challenge to mine operators has been how to use existing mining equipment to meet the requirements of the "Act." Freeman United Coal Mining Company opened the first new large surface coal mine in Illinois following passage of the "Act." The Industry Mine, located near Macomb, Illinois started mining operations during March of 1982 and was required therefore, to meet all of the requirements of the "Act" including prime farmland restoration. At the Industry Mine a shovel and a cross-pit bucket wheel excavator (wheel) are used for overburden removal and the wheel is addition- ally utilized to assist in reclamation operations. The wheel mines the subsoil thereby elliminating scraper placement of that subsoil and the attendant compaction problems with scraper placed subsoil. The wheel is used to convey topsoil stock- piles from the highwall to the mined overburden in order to lessen scraper traffic and possible compaction on the graded overburden during top- soil removal and replacement. Close control of the operation of the wheel yields more uniform wheel spoil ridges which then require less grading prior to topsoil replacement.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research aimed at providing technology for a low-cost, high-recovery, environmentally acceptable mining system to recover the vast thin-seam coal reserves existing in the mountainous areas of the Appalachian region in the Eastern United States. As part of this research, the Bureau is evaluating new techniques to address these coal resources. This report summarizes the results of a worldwide technical search on thin-seam coal mining, the formulation of various methodologies for mining mountaintop thin seams, and the implementation and status of a physical model test program to validate and further develop the most promising concept-the "roof-fall-tolerant" mining system.

The design and construction of a Concentrator based on initial pilot plant work is rarely perfect. Palabora's plant was no exception although the basic objective to produce copper in a safely conservative manner was certainly achieved in a profitable manner. identification of the metallurgical and mechanical deficiencies of the plant through operating experience and a better concept of the minerology of the orebody enabled the development of a more efficient process both in terms of the metallurgical performance and cost effectiveness. To maintain and improve this level of efficiency, continuous inspection and revision of the plant metallurgy and engineering standards is required. In this presentation a few of the investigations and changes are described: 1.0 Alternative methods to restrict and eliminate the detrimental effect of critical size material on the performance of an autogenous mill. 2.0 An analysis of the environmental condi¬tions in Palabora's grinding circuit and the introduction of high chrome balls as grinding media. 3.0 The role of magnetite in the beneficiation process at Palabora. 1.0 Alternative methods to restrict and eliminate the detrimental effect of critical size material on the performance of an autogenous mill.

Onahama Smelter of Onahama Smelting & Refining Co., Ltd. has two green- charge reverberatory furnaces; the old furnace was constructed in 1965 and the new one in 1973. This paper discusses the use of oxygen-oil burners in a green-charge reverberatory furnace and also compares the copper loss in slag between the two furnaces at Onahama Smelter. During the past ten years of operation, no shutdowns of the old furnace were necessary and the smelting capacity was increased by 25% by the use of two oxygen-oil burners. These burners are suitable for a green-charge reverberatory furnace to in- crease the smelting capacity without causing an increase of the exhaust gas volume and refractory erosion. After two years of operation of the old furnace, a bottom build-up in the charging zone of approximately 50 centimeters was experienced, and this build-up has stayed at this level since then. In 1973, a new additional reverberatory furnace was put into operation. Copper content in slag of the new furnace was lower by approximately 0.15% than that of the old one during the first several months after the start-up. Investigations were then made on the effect of the bottom conditions in the charging zone on the copper content in slag.

Tunnel excavation while mining is not often performed in North America primarily due to access constraints in both operations. Referencing European approaches for long distance tunneling, the Devil?s Slide Tunnel project has applied innovation and technology to provide the ability to overcome this unique challenge. The Devil?s Slide Tunnel requires the construction of twin bore tunnels excavated based on sequential excavation method (SEM) construction methods using New Austrian Tunneling Methods (NATM) principles. The twin tunnels are approximately 9 m (30 ft) in diameter and 1,250 m (4,100 linear ft) in length. The purpose of this project is to reroute Route 1 from around the Devil?s Slide through the San Pedro Mountains crossing from Montara, CA along the south and into Pacifica, CA in the north. The Caltrans project was awarded in December 2006 for a total of $272,366,000. The job is an A+B job, thus the estimate scheme of final lining while tunnel excavation is important to save time. A+B is a method of rewarding a contractor for completing a project as quickly as possible. By providing a cost each working day, the contract combines the cost to perform the work (A) with the cost of impact to the public (B) to provide the lowest cost to the public. Concurrent mining while lining is achieved through a series of gantries and a set of tunnel forms allowing the pass-through of the excavation equipment. The tunnel lining operation passes through several phases of work that are dependent upon the progress of the tunnel excavation process. This involves unique milestones, such as the evolution of the ventilation system, development of an enlarged cross passage to allow equipment to access each tunnel from within the tunnel and, finally, the installation of an invert prior to arch lining that limits the continuity of the final lining operation.

"In this work, the Panzhihua low grade ilmenite and graphite were milled for 1, 2, 4 and 8 h firstly, then the temperature rising behavior of milled sample in microwave field were studied. The average heating rate of samples milled for 1, 2, 4, 8 h were 1.86, 4.08, 2.82, and 2.32 K/s; Before optimize the microwave reduction process, several experiments were conducted in order to confirm the parameters range. After milled for 4 or 8 h and reduced above 930 oC, the Fe metallization are higher than 90%; Then the optimization was investigated by using response surface methodology (RSM), the significance of predict model and each terms were analyzed, and the optimization parameters were given as: milling time is 4 h; reduction temperature is 1001 or 1070oC; the holding time is 37.5 or 26.9 min. Under these conditions, the Fe metallization given by predict model is 91 or 92 %.IntroductionThere is about 9.66 billion tons of Vanadic Titan-magnetite deposits in Panzhihua, China. In this reserve, there is about 8.73×108 t of TiO2, accounting for 90.54% of the Chinese reserves, and 35.17% of the international reserves and ranking first in the world. [1] Titanium mineral deposits are classified into Rock type and Placer type. Rock type is the igneous mineral, which have high content of FeO (Relative to Fe2O3) and gangue. The Panzhihua ilmenite is a typical rock type ilmenite ore. The higher contents of MgO, CaO, SiO2 and the complex mineralogy are making its direct reduction progressively more difficult."

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research and development on a coal-burning gas turbine. This work includes the development of (1) turbine blades resistant to coal ash erosion, (2) equipment to feed coal under pressure to a turbine, (3) an efficient combustion system, and (4) equipment to remove coal ash from the gases that drive the turbine. Initial emphasis is being placed on testing the first turbine ever equipped with blades designed specifically for use with coal as the fuel. Operating tests with this turbine are now in progress. This paper describes the Bureau's coal-burning gas turbine development program and progress on this operating test.

Lithium is the lightest of all metals, but as it deteriorates rapidly in air it has no structural applications. Alloys of lithium that will float upon water can be made with other light metals, but these ultralight alloys are not useful in aircraft production or elsewhere at present. Alone or alloyed with alkaline earth meals, lithium acts as reining agent on molten metals, and as a minor constituent with other metals it imparts characteristic properties to the allay. Lithium compounds have somewhat wider application in commerce than either the metal or the alloys. They are used in the glass, ceramic, chemical, and air-conditioning industries and less extensively in the optical, pharmaceutical, electrical, and textile industries. The United States is the leading producer anti consumer of lithium ores and compounds and apparently has the largest known ore reserves. The value of lithium ores and primary chemical byproducts produced is relatively small, yet the lithium chemical industry yields products worth hundreds of thousands of dollars each year, owing partly to the high degree of purity demanded by the trade for most finished products and to the low combining weight of lithium. Fortunately, the low-grade ores can now be concentrated economically, and this fact, together with our extensive reserves, assures adequate supplies to meet any reasonable increase in demand. Lithium is listed as essential by both the American and British war agencies, and its military importance may be greatly enhanced.

An impact wear testing machine was devised by the Bureau of Mines that simulates the repeated impact conditions encountered in large milling and grinding operations where breakage and spalling are problems. The apparatus provides data on materials that may help in the design of alloys with improved resistance to deformation, spalling, and breakage. The test blocks are 2 in thick by 6 in by 8 in. Impacts are produced by dropping 3-in-diam balls weighing 4 lb from a height of 10 ft. Tests were run until breakage occurred or to a total of 100,000 impacts. Four types of failures of the test block were observed: (1) cold flow of the bulk material by plastic deformation, (2) flaking of the surface in the impact region, (3) spalling of the block to form a crater in the region of impact, and (4) breakage of the test block into two or more major pieces. The effects of composition, heat treatment, microstructure, and hardness on types of failure are discussed.

Accurate flammability and ignitability data for chemicals form the cornerstone of procedures used to assess the hazards associated with commercial chemical production and use. Since 1967 the ASTM E27 Committee on the Hazard Potential of Chemicals has issued numerous, widely used consensus standards dealing with diverse testing and predictive procedures used to obtain relevant chemical hazard properties. The decision to issue a standard rests solely with the membership, which consists of representatives from industry, testing laboratories, consulting firms, government, academia, and instrument suppliers. Consequently, the procedures are automatically relevant, timely, and widely applicable. The purpose of this paper is to highlight some of the widely used standards, complemented with hypothetical but relevant examples describing the testing strategy, interpretation, and application of the results. A further goal of this paper is to encourage participation in the consensus standards development process. The paper is published in two parts. The first part (in the preceding issue of Process Safety Progress) dealt with the E27 standards pertaining to thermodynamics, thermal stability, and chemical compatibility. Ventilation-pressure surveys are required to determine the rates of pressure losses in various parts of mine-airway systems. These may be determined directly by differential pressure measurements or deduced from absolute pressure measurements, Despite the confusion caused by its inverted nonlinear scale, the altimeter has special application to pressure surveys in mines in which only small differences in elevation are involved, as is true for most of our large bituminous-coal mines in these, the judicious use of information obtained by pressure surveying can result in greatly improved working conditions as regards health and safety and, in many instances, can yield large financial returns. The main purposes of this report are to discuss methods of using altimeters for pressure surveys and to present the particular methods of making surveys and calculating the results of surveys used by the Mine Ventilation Section of the Bureau of Mines.

Highly variable milling properties within a geologically complex porphyry copper deposit owned by Kennecott Corporation in Nevada made it necessary to estimate the copper recovery and concentrate grade in areas where actual test data was lacking. The estimation was made by first determining the relationships between the desired metallurgical properties and the ore's petrology (i.e. copper mineral type, rock type and copper grade). This relationship was then combined with the already estimated rock type, mineral type and copper grade data in the mineral block model to predict the milling properties.
