The frictional resistance to motion of a belt conveyor has always been a subject of intensive studies and research by engineers throughout the years. Numerous informations have been developed by analysing series of field tests on belt conveyors of different characteristics and carrying different materials at various capacities. Within certain limits of weight per unit length and tension, the theoretical considerations and the analysis of the field tests, both in the US and abroad, resulted in the development of similar formulas. In general these formulas are safe to use up to the following limits:

Ore bodies at Cornwall, Pennsylvania, have been mined since 1742 principally for iron from magnetite, but also for copper (in chalcopyrite), silver (in chalcopyrite), gold (in chalcopyrite), cobalt (in pyrite), sulfur, and crushed limestone aggregate. Metallization occurs as a limestone replacement above the essentially conformable, south dipping portion of a discordant saucershaped diabase sheet. Pre-Triassic and Triassic faulting have emplaced host Cambrian limestone and two Ordovician(?) hornfels units, now for the most part resting above diabase. Thermal metamorphism of carbonate-bearing country rocks largely to calc-silicates, is ubiquitous. Metasomatism, particularly of potassium, is unique to ore zones. Associated magnetite- actinolite mineralization replaces, in a preferential sequence, all earlier metamorphic and metasomatic minerals and rarely diabase chilled margin. Mineralogical (diopside, actinolite, mica, sulfides, oxides) and chemical (Fe, Cu, S, Co) zoning of the eastern ore body is focused down dip, near its western edge, along a major vertical fault through diabase. This zoning is spatially related to magnetite veins in diabase, to an ore body within diabase, and to a shear zone that probably extends through the sheet.

The specific objective of this three year study is to investigate the means of reestablishing non-polluted hydrologic systems in areas where surface mining directly impacts shallow ground-water resources. The research area chosen for the study is located near Colstrip, Montana it a new mine site where chemical analysis of core samples from the overburden suggested that excessive concentrations of several elements would he encountered during the mining process. This report discusses local vegetation; soils; and regional geology, and hydrology. Stratigraphic cross sections and regression analyses were used to study the litho-chemical relationships in the overburden. Cross sections indicated Inimical material may be related to both rock tune and position within the overburden profile. In overburden zoness where clay content was high, there was a greater probability that Pb, Cu, Ni, and Mn concentrations would also be higher than average; similarly, the likelihood of overburden exceeding a suspect level became less as the sand content increased. Highest value, of conductance were usually found within a few meters of the surface. High concentrations of clay, nickel, and zinc were frequently found directly above and below the Rosebud coal. Regression analysis indicated overburden SAR was predictable with only a Na analysis. A strong relationship also existed in the overburden between conductance, Ca, and Mg.

"The research is aimed at solving the processing of waste products of titanium-magnesium production. The aim of the research is to extract synthetic carnallite and industrial products enriched with niobium from waste products of titanium-magnesium production. Analysis of the current state of the titanium and magnesium production in the Republic of Kazakhstan shows the availability of significant amounts of chloride wastes containing valuable components. Magnesium and potassium with an average content of 50-60 % potassium chlorides, 25-30 % magnesium chlorides are lost in the wastes of the titanium and magnesium production. Ust-Kamenogorsk Titanium Magnesium Plant JSC (UKTMP) currently imports carnallite that is a KCl-MgCl2X6H2O binary salt at quite high prices. Chloride wastes of titanium production, sublimates of dust chambers of a titanium chlorinator, sludge of a magnesium electrolytic unit and sludge of a carnallite chlorinator has been chosen as the targets of our research. The analysis of niobium distribution within any solid waste of a titanium slag chlorination process in UKTMP JSC showed that the highest content of niobium is in the sublimates of dust chambers of a titanium chlorinator in the ranges from 0.26 to 1.0 %. Among the niobium extraction technologies considered, the known method of its extraction from the chloride waste is leaching with weak solutions of mineral acids or alkalis in order to convert the chloride salts into the solution to be used for synthetic carnallite extraction. Besides niobium, other impurity components are transferred to the cake and shall be separated from the base metals. The effective method for this is the chlorination process enabling niobium transfer into the sublimates in the form of chlorides and thus separating it from the majority of the impurities. The condensed niobium chlorides are hydrolyzed transferring it into sediments in the form of oxide. New ways of processing waste products of titanium-magnesium production with the receipt of marketable products are relevant in the development of processing of mineral raw materials."

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Sur- vey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. "The aim of this study is to give a better understanding for the performance of the composite material RRS and the synergy effect of its components under different stress regimes and while an excavation face advances during tunneling. The lower part of the Q-system scale (i.e. Q-values of 0.4 or less for a tunnel span of 10m) is commonly used for tunnel applications in softer rock formations. This is implied in the updated Q-chart, where the dimensioning of rock support by using Reinforced Ribs of Shotcrete (RRS) comprises the use of fiber reinforced shotcrete, S(fr), rock bolts and shotcreted beams reinforced with steel rebars. In this study, an effort has been made to simulate RRS in a numerical code and to study its behaviour in a real case study. A double tube, triple lane tunnel in weathered tuff has been chosen as reference material for testing RRS under changing load. A rather extensive parametric study has been run by using the same key input rock mass parameters and three different in situ stress regimes (sH/sv =2, sH/sv =1 and sH/sv =0.5). Changes have only been made to the RRS key input parameters in order to simulate the changing loads during the face excavation process in tunneling. The critical part of this numerical modelling work that is under investigation in this study under each stress regime, is the period just after the excavation: i.e 4 hours; 16 hours after excavation; and finally after the complete curing (28 days) of the cement based components. The RRS are installed in three consecutive numerical steps as follows: a) the application of S(fr) on the rock surface in order to even it up for the RRS application; b) radial bolting; and c) installation of the reinforcing steel rebars, that form the reinforced beam. The results are varying and are strongly dependent on the imposed stress regime and they show in general the following tendencies: The axial forces on S(fr) show that S(fr) is almost overloaded during the first 4 hours in all 3 stages. More particularly: For the case with sH/sv =2 a) the axial forces on S(fr) and on the steel rebars are reduced after 16 hours and 28 days; b) the same is observed on the shear stresses in S(fr) and on steel rebars, they are decreasing after 16 hours and 28 days; and c) the bolts loads are almost unchanged. For the case with sH/sv =1 a) the axial forces on the S(fr) are reduced after 16 hours and 28 days; b) the same is observed for the axial and shear stresses, as well as moments on the steel rebars, they are decreasing after 16 hours and 28 days; and c) the bolts loads are almost unchanged."

Literature concerned with management and supervisory training was reviewed and analyzed from the perspective of relative effectiveness of various training methods for improving knowledge and awareness, changing attitudes, improving problem solving skills, improving interpersonal skills, and improving on-the-job performance. Conclusions were drawn relative to each method and the current state of the field of management and leadership training. A 168 item annotated bibliography is presented.

The operation of Kennecott 's Bingham Canyon copper precipitation plant, one of the world's largest, is described. This description includes a brief historical review of precipitation at Bingham and the general layout and operation of the present cone cementation facility. Current practices are based on results of studies undertaken to define improvements needed in each unit operation. These improvements were required to meet changing plant conditions and were implemented primarily within the constraints of the existing facilities. Specific unit operations included were the cone precipitators, the cone discharge thickener, the cone effluent settling basins, and the plate and frame filter presses. As a result of these improvements, loss of precipitated copper decreased and the degree of precipitation increased, raising copper recovery by 9 t/d. At the same time, iron consumption was reduced by 22.5 t/d. Problems in drying the cement copper were also overcome so that a product containing 12-15% moisture could be consistently delivered for smelting.

Introductory The steady advance in the price of lead and zinc in the metal markets of the world during the past few years has resulted in an active search for new deposits of these metals, and to the re-examination of known properties that are now idle. There are a number of deposits of these metals in eastern Canada, the best known of which are the Tetreault mine at Notre Dame des Anges, Que.; the Reader mine on Calumet island, Que.; the Stirling property in Cape Breton, and the Federal mine in Gaspe district, Que. . The author has run concentration tests on the ores from the first three mentioned properties. The ores from Notre Dame des Anges and Calumet island presented problems in concentration which were not successfully solved until the past year. Although considerable experimental work has been done by the Ore Testing Laboratories on the ore from the Stirling mine we have not been successful in developing a satisfactory method of treatment. Character and Types of Ores Metallurgically the lead-zinc ores of eastern Canada may be classified into three distinct types as follows: First: - Ore in which the sulphide minerals are fairly coarsely crystalline and can be freed by crushing to 40 or 60 mesh. The zinc blend has a high iron content (not marmatite) and gives a dark brown colour on grinding. The ores of Notre Dame des Anges and Calumet island, Que., may be cited as examples.

The Bureau of Mines developed, by core drilling, the property of Nevada Scheelite, Inc., from October 5, 1943, to February 24, 1944. Claims of the corporation are near Rawhide in the northern portion of Mineral County, Nev. The purpose of the work was to determine possible reserves in the lateral and vertical extensions of a tactite zone which was being mined for scheelite. Production from this zone to January 1, 1944, was said to be 64,500 tons, with a recovery of 50,618 units of tungsten trioxide. The development work was done by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey and comprised a study of the geology, mapping the areas, and exploring the deposit by diamond drilling, trenching and sampling. Eleven holes were drilled for a total footage of 2,365 feet of holes.

The Keyes Helium Plant of the Federal Bureau of Mines was constructed under an expedited schedule, to supply the urgent and growing demand for helium in atomic energy, missiles, aerology, space exploration, shielded-arc welding, and low-temperature research. Construction began in December 1958 and ended in August 1959. The plant, near Keyes, Okla., processes 2 percent helium-bearing natural gas from the Keyes gasfield. In 1960 the plant produced and shipped 263 million cubic feet of helium (equivalent to an annual rate of 290 million cubic feet). Production cost was $9.11 a thousand cubic feet of helium. A low-temperature process involving two steps is used; the first separates a crude-helium product from the natural gas at about -250° F. and 225 pounds per square inch gage (p.s.i.g.); and the second purifies the crude helium to a high-purity product (Grade-A helium, 99.995 percent helium) at about -320° F. and 2,750 p.s.i.g.

The main aim of this work is to evaluate whole-body vibration (WBV) of dozer operators based on three sitting postures (i.e., with 15° lean forward inclination posture, vertically erect posture with no inclination, and with 15° lean backward inclination posture) in Indian surface coal mines. A seat pad tri-axial accelerometer was used to collect WBV data from six dozer operators for three different sitting postures. Results showed that except for Dozer-1, 2, 4, and 5 operators during lean forward sitting posture and Dozer-4 operator during vertical erected posture, no other dozer operators have exceeded an exposure limit value (ELV) of 1.15 m/s2 in any of the considered sitting postures. Similarly, the vibration dose value (VDV) based on exposure action value (EAV) of 9.1 m/s1.75 has surpassed for all the dozers. But no dozer operator has exceeded an exposure limit value of 21 m/s1.75. The outcome of the study infers that based on “above health guidance caution zone (HGCZ)” for daily vibration exposure, i.e., A(8) measurements, for the operator sitting in lean backward postures the vibration amplification was reduced by 32.89% less compared with lean forward posture and 16.23% less when compared with vertically erected posture. Similarly, based on VDV(8), the exposure to vibration for the lean backward posture was reduced by 33.34% when compared with lean forward posture and 17.11% less when compared with vertically erected posture. Based on the above observation, it is concluded that lean back inclination with a trunk flexion of 15° is a favorable sitting posture, as it exposes the dozer operators to minimum vibration.

Determination of the sampling constant and liberation diameter are of importance when applying the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE) equation to optimise sampling protocols. The method for the direct determination of the sampling constant is based on the æGy 50-pieceÆ experiment and variants thereof, which is generally known as the heterogeneity test. In the coarse gold environment, the heterogeneity test is prone to poor repeatability and bias due to the very heterogeneity that it aims to quantify. A key issue is the large sample mass that can be required in the coarse gold environment, which may reach 1 t or more. The heterogeneity test often provides an evaluation of the background gold grade heterogeneity, but understates that of the high-grade coarse-gold component. This is because the total mass of fragments is usually too small to represent the mineralisation. Despite this relatively well-known problem, heterogeneity tests are often undertaken on deposits where the presence of coarse gold is ignored, not fully realised or vastly understated. Sampling types and protocol designs are frequently based on poor quality data that do not match the characteristics of the orebody. To ensure the stability ofa tailings pond embankment, the height of the phreatic surface must be kept at or below a safe level. In this investigation, the Bureau of Mines analyzed various horizontal drain designs for tailings embankments to determine their effects on location of the phreatic surface. This report describes the investigation, and it includes 21 dimensionless graphs that can be used to estimate the drain spacing and length dimensions necessary to ensure the stability of embankments of various configurations. Analyses were based on the use of two computer codes, a three-dimensional finite-element code and a two-dimensional finite-difference code. The computer-generated results were compared with results obtained from a laboratory embankment model, other laboratory test results, and piezomet-ric data from two actual tailings embankments. Nearly the same phreatic surface locations were predicted using either of the computer codes. For one of the actual embankments studied, the predicted phreatic surface location was slightly higher than the measured location; for the other, the predicted location closely followed the actual surface trend. Phreatic surfaces of the laboratory model were slightly higher than the code-gener-ated locations, and the differences grew larger as drain length increased or drain spacing decreased.

Cuprous oxide is one of the oldest antifouling agents and also acts as red pigment in these paints. In printed circuit board manufacturing industries, waste etchant contains a substantial amount of copper ion. In the present study, a process was suggested for recovering cuprous oxides from the waste etchant and optimum conditions were investigated to recover the cuprous oxides. The process consists of two steps: in first step, Cu powder is added into wastewater solution, and cupric ions re-duce into cuprous ions (Cu+Cu2+?2Cu+), where cuprous ions precipitate as cuprous chloride; In second step, cuprous oxide is synthesized by adding NaOH into cuprous chloride solution (2CuCl+2NaOH?Cu2O+NaCl+H2O). Optimum conditions were investigated to recover cuprous oxide in the processes. When copper powder was added into wastewater with copper ions, Cu concentration decreased from 15.6% to 2.6% and ORP decreased from 620 mV to -59.9 mV. This result shows that cupric ions reduced into cuprous ions. XRD data indicated that the precipitate was cuprous chloride powder. Using the cuprous chloride recovered and NaOH solution, cuprous oxide was synthesized. To investigate the optimum condition, various NaOH solutions were added into water with CuCl, and then pH, ORP, Cu concentration, Cu contents in precipitates were analysed. XRD data showed that main component of precipitates was cuprous oxide.

THE investigation herein described had its beginning in the chemical laboratory of the Department of the Interior, Calgary. After the transfer of the natural resources to the Province of Alberta in 1930, the laboratory was closed and the investigation discontinued, but in 1933, with the permission of the Director of the Mines Branch, the work was again taken up and brought to completion. OBJECT OF THE INVESTIGATION The object of the investigation as originally planned may be stated as follows : (1) To determine the chemical composition of the limestone formation underlying Turner Valley gas field. (2) To identify 'beds' in the limestone, if such existed, with definitecharacteristics which would mark them from immediately overlying and underlying measures. (3) To relate information acquired on the composition of the limestone to the occurrence of oil and gas in the particular section examined. Definite information was lacking as to the exact chemical composition of the limestone and of its variations in composition at various depths. The formation was generally referred to in the field as the 'dolomitic' limestone, but the depth to which the dolomitized zone extended and the degree to which the limestone generally had become dolomitized were not known. Jn the drilling and logging of wells, the recognition of suitable 'markers' in the various formations is a matter of some importance. Markers are generally relatively small but widespread members of a formation, which have some characteristic property, of colour, composition, or form, by which they may be identified, and with them, consequently, the formation of which they form a part. In the formations above the limestone in Turner Valley, a number of well defined and easily recognized markers are known to geologists, drillers, and others interested in the field. Many of these markers Hand out in sharp contrast to adjoining measures and are therefore easily recognized; in others, the contrast is less sharp, with consequent difficulty in identification.

The utilization of natural gas in non-ferrous industries during smelting and refining stages of copper , aluminum, zinc and lead was studied. The total amount of nonelectrical energy consumed in the production of zinc, copper, lead and aluminium, are 96.5% ,93%,92%, and 6 % respectively. It is calculated that 9.45 wt %of air of stoichiometric amount can be substituted by natural gas to the total air input in the nonelectrical energy utilization processes. The results showed that the non electrical energy may be substituted to an amount of 71 % ,52 % ,35 % ,32 % ,and 26% ,in the production of lead, aluminium (plates, foils) copper, aluminium, zinc, respectivelly. Similar calculations are carried out in terms of energy in Btu for the total production of non-ferrous metals in the U.S. It shows that 51.866~106 millions of Btu of nonelectrical energy can be substituted by 54.58~106 cu. ft of natural gas. Finally, the substitution of non electrical energy in terms of equivalent coal energy is discussed. 1t is shown that total non electrical energy is equal to 1.852 million tones of coal .If this 1.852 million tones of coal is replaced by natural gas, a total savings of 22.14 million dollars are achieved. The total or partial substitution of coal by the natural gas in the existing industrial processes and modification of redesigning the processes is discussed.
