The papers contained herein summarize results of various recent Bureau of Mines investigations in the area of mine power distribution systems. They are based on information from Bureau personnel, contractors and grantees, and Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration. Conclusions drawn from a series of parameter measurements on mine power systems, taken over a 3-year span, are presented. Personnel and equipment hazards due to faults on isolated, solidly grounded, and resistance grounded three-phase systems are discussed. Two papers cover dc applications of circuit breakers, including a novel protection scheme for trolley lines. The methods of suppressing induced arcing currents and voltages in a-c machines are evaluated. An evaluation program for ground monitors is described. Acceptance test procedures and the importance of various paparameters for trailing cable splice are covered. A number of techniques for locating faults in trailing cables are described.

BRITISH Guiana, Great Britain's only South American colony, may be reached by very comfortable steamers, both from North America and Europe. The trip from North American Atlantic ports requires about 12 to 14 days; that from Europe about 18 to 20 days. A number of steamship lines, including Canadian, American, and Dutch, have regular sailings between North America and British Guiana, with calls en route at various interesting ports in the West Indies and northern South America. Moreover, several lines, including British, German, and French, have steamships operating regularly between Europe and the West Indies. Indeed, so popular have the West Indian voyages become in recent years that, during the winter months, special cruises in considerable number are organized for many vessels that ply in the trans-Atlantic service in the summer. A trip to British Guiana, therefore, has become a delightful experience. After visits at the various attractive Leeward and Windward islands and Trinidad, the approach to the low, flat, British Guiana coast, with its muddy coastal waters extending for many miles offshore, is somewhat of a contrast. Arrival in Guiana waters is signalled by the appearance of the modern high-power Demerara Light, located "on a shoal about twelve miles from the mouth of Demerara river. From this point, if the tide is right, a pilot takes the steamer across the bar, eight to ten miles offshore, and into Georgetown harbour. At high tide, the water above the bar ranges from 15 to 18 feet in depth, depending on whether it is neap tide or spring tide; at low tide, the corresponding depths are 9 to 11 feet. As the bar is of soft mud, however, it is usually possible for vessels to pass over it with a draught of about two feet in excess of that indicated by the tide tables. Upon nearing the shore, one sees first the Georgetown wireless towers, then the light-house and the tall chimneys of sugar mills and of various factories in Georgetown, and finally the palms and other tropical trees and the houses of Georgetown itself along the sea shore and the east bank of Demerara river. Extensive wharves operated by various exporting and importing companies stretch along the river bank and activity prevails in Georgetown harbour. The principal exports are sugar, rice, gold, diamonds, bauxite, balata, lumber, fruit and other tropical products. The imports are food-stuffs, wearing apparel, and manufactured materials of many kinds.

The solubilities of calcium sulfate in HCl-CaC1z-H20 solutions up to 100°C were successfully modelled with the aid of OLI software after bringing proper modification to it. Modelling, more specifically, was carried out with the help of the Environmental Simulation Program, V-6.6.0.4 (www.olisystems.com). New model parameters were obtained by regressing the solubility data. A private databank was established by adding the newly defined model parameters and the calcium sulfate hemihydrate phase that is not included in the original OLI database. The McGill-modified OLI software was successfully applied not only to modelling solubilities but also the transformation of the various CaS04 phases, namely dihydrate, hemihydrate and anhydrite. In this paper, the modelling methodology will be discussed along with a comparison of the capabilities of the newly developed model vs the original OLI model.

The existing construction and demolition (C and D) waste recycling technologies and standards have been essentially focused on the production and use of coarse recycled aggregates. Very few papers focus on the production of recycled sand, although some previous results show that fine aggregates fraction represents around 40 to 60% (in mass) of the Brazilian waste and it is usually used as road sub-base or disposed in landfills. The quality of the recycled aggregate is strictly related to the content of porous and low strength phases, mainly the patches of cement remaining on recycled aggregate surface. Some technologies have already been described in the literature, even though, to the moment none of these technologies has clearly succeeded in reaching the large market available. This paper presents a summary of the main properties of the sand produced from C and D waste by tertiary crushing at vertical shaft impact crusher (VSI). Additionally mineral processing technologies were applied on the attained product, such as gravity concentration by shaking table and spirals and removal of cement paste by attrition. The main properties of recycled sand are discussed and compared to the previous C and D waste, respectively: particle size distribution, particle shape, chemical composition, cement paste content and porosity. The results demonstrates that the crushing allowed producing a VSI-sand with low porosity and water absorption due to the increasing on the content of silicates from natural rock phases and increasing liberation between these phases and porous cement paste; the particles from the attained product presented also a better shape (sphericity and aspect ratio). The attrition tests assayed on VSI recycled fine aggregates accomplished a further selective disaggregation of cement paste and other porous materials - the porosity was reduced from 10% to 7%. The concentration by shaking table at narrow sieve fractions led to a product with low porosity and reduced content of cement paste, however, concentration on spirals did not succeed since separation was performed essentially by the size of the particles. The heavy product from shaking table represented almost 75% in weight and has less than 60% recovery of CaO+LOI, and expressive reduction on porosity. The aim of producing sand from construction and demolition waste through mineral processing unit operations changes the recycling approach and contributes for up cycling the recycled sand. The exhaustion of sand deposits on Brazilian large centers, the increasing price and the construction boom encourages the development of alternative materials as construction raw material. The use of inert gas systems to extinguish mine fires has been the subject of research for some time in the United States. In some European countries, it is an established practice. Tests were conducted with the CMI Inert Gas System (CMI), which is being used by the Polish mining industry. This system utilizes a modified jet aircraft engine and afterburner as a compact source of combustion products with a very low (less than one percent) oxygen content. Water injected into the combustion products stream provides evaporative cooling and forms a mist with a high cooling capacity. The CMI system was used under controlled conditions to extinguish coal pile fires at the U. S. Bureau of Mines Experimental Mine in Bruceton, Pennsylvania. The test results show that the CMI system can be used conveniently to extinguish fires quickly and to maintain an inert atmosphere in the fire zone to prevent re-ignition.

The errors resulting from field sampling, sample preparation and analysis are investigated for drainage sediments derived from homogeneous sandstone, shale, limestone, basic igneous and granite lithologies as a background to a primary reconnaissance survey of England and Wales. Emission spectrographic analyses of approximately 350 samples for Al, Ca, Fe, K, Si, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Ga, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sc, Sn, Sr and V and atomic absorption analyses for Cu, Ni, Mn, Co, Zn and Pb have been treated statistically. For routine broad-scale surveys analysis of the unground -80-mesh sediment fraction proves satisfactory. Sampling error between localities in a stream is shown to be less than spectrographic analytical error for many of the elements considered here, except where mineralisation (contamination) occurs, but exceeds the atomic absorption analytical errors in most cases. Unless it it critical to reduce the amount of between-site variability (having regard to analytical errors) in the regional survey, there appears to be no advantage in the use of a more sophisticated sampling technique. The utility of moving-average maps in reducing the width of the confidence belt around the regional 'geochemical surface', and thus compensating to some extent for the sampling errors, is also demonstrated.

The mass spectra of 14 previously unreported alkylthiophenes are pre-sented. Low ionization voltage data of selected compounds from these 14 and 23 previously reported alkylthiophenes are presented and discussed for their value in supporting fragmentation mechanisms analytical correlations. A comparison with and corroboration of earlier correlations is made. Additional correlations concerning detection of side chain branching and the detection of ethyl-alkyl and propyl-alkylthiophenes are made. A discussion of the possible fragmentation routes and mechanism of fragmentation is given. Speculative structures are inferred s out some of the ions and hence this work provides a basis for suggesting fation mechanisms for the alkylthiophenes according to modern theories ass spectrometry. Verification of these mechanisms must await the availability of isotopically labeled molecules which are labeled in specific lotions that permit the definition of the paths of frag-mentation. Some suggestions for further work to generalize on the correlations and studies made to this point are presented.

Semisolid metal alloys have a special microstructure of globular grains suspended in a liquid metal matrix. This particular physical state of the matter can be exploited to produce near-net- shape parts with improved mechanical properties. However, the behavior of the slurry is strongly influenced by the local solid fraction and state of agglomeration. Different flow instabilities ·associated with the combined flow and solidification process result, which make difficult the application of semi-solid processing in the casting industry. Moreover, the rheology of semisolid materials is not well understood. Most of the theory has been derived from experimental data, which are somewhat difficult to measure. A model that accounts for the multiphase nature of semisolid slurries is required to get more insight into such complex flows. This paper describes a mixture model for semisolid slurries. It assumes that the mixture of liquid-solid components behaves as a single fluid as far as overall mass and momentum balances are concerned. The coupling force between the phases is derived on the assumption that the slurry is a fluid saturated isotropic media. The proposed methodology is implemented in a finite element code. The model is then applied to the the filling of an industrial-scale capillary flow viscometer. Segregation patterns are obtained and discussed.

This report describes a feasibility study to consolidate coal waste sludge in a 100-acre pond by applying direct current between floating and buried electrodes. The study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement with Washington Irrigation and Development Co., located near Centralia, Wash. Part 1 covers results of laboratory tests at the Bureau's Spokane Research Center and a small-scale field test at the cooperator's coal preparation plant in western Washington. The process is efficient and cost-effective when power is applied at low current density. A proposed system, fully described in part 2, has electrodes covering 21 acres of pond surface radially arranged around a central power platform. Densification of pond contents would require 2 to 3 years of treatment. Total cost of equipment, labor, and material is approximately $500,000.

"Abstract - Shallow submarine hydrothermal fluids from Paleohori Bay off the Greek Island of Milos have been investigated in detail. The extensive gas and warm (max. 93°C) water vents are enriched in major components such as C1-, Na+, Si, Ca2+, Mn, PO4 3-, NH4 +, K+, Sr2+, H2S and CH4 and depleted in Mg2+, O2 and SO4 2- relative to ambient seawater. Based on zero-Mg calculations, it is deduced that the submarine vent fluids are related to the geothermal reservoir beneath Milos which has a similar chemical composition. Fluid samples from each vent in Paleohori Bay represent a mixture of hydrothermal end-member fluids derived from the upper and deeper geothermal reservoir systems of Milos, a mantle-derived source, a high-chloride fluid resulting from phase separation of geo thermal fluids and a steam-heated CO2-rich meteoric water. Résumé - À l’île de Milos dans la mer d’Égée, des fluides sous-marins hydrothermaux en eau profonde ont été récherchés en détail près de la baie de Paleohori. Les larges émanations de gaz et d’eau chaude (temperature maximale: 93°C) sont enrichies en constituants principaux tels que de Cl-, Na+, Si, Ca2+, Mn, PO4 3-, NH4+, K+, Si, Sr2+, H2S et CH4 et appauvries en Mg2+, O2, SO4 2- comparé à l’eau de mer environnante. Solution mining, sometimes also refered to as chemical mining or bacterial mining, is an innovative technology which, by making use of proper chemical reagents and taking advantage of bio-chemical action of some micro-organism species, can dissolve effectively most. desirable metallic values from ores and then extract them profitably from the resultant metal-bearing solution by suitable means to form the metal product it is more preferable to the conventional mining methods, not only because of its capability to improve working conditions and minimize environmental problems either underground or on surface, but also for its amenability in particular, to exploit low-grade or submarginal ore bodies, or those deposits which are too deep-seated to be mined out economically. Furthermore, it also provides a potential approach to win metals directly from their ores or ore-deposits in-situ by more simplified methods and at a lower cast than the conventional mining-milling-smelting process would do previously. Hence, in developing countries such as China, it will most, probably become a new mining tool of great promise. (1)

This paper summarizes extensive data supplied by 40 copper converter plants in 18 countries, and includes a partial analysis and comments on the effect of converter slag composition and temperature on the fomzation and elimination of magnetite and the life of basic and neutral refractories. APRELIMINARY draft of this paper, including data from 26 companies which had submitted replies to a questionnaire, was presented at the Annual Meeting of the AIME held in New York in February, 1956. Publication was delayed in the expectation that additional replies would be received, and justification for the subsequent delay may be found in the fact that the present revised paper contains data from 40 converter plants situated in 18 different countries. The suggestion that a questionnaire be sent to the major copper and copper-nickel plants outside the U.S.S.R. and associated countries arose at the Los Angeles Annual Meeting in February, 1953, where several papers dealing with converter construction and operation were presented. In private discussions which followed, a group of metallurgists and refractories engineers raised the question why practices varied so much at different plants. Why did magnesite brick give superior service to chrome-magnesite in some plants but chrome-magnesite prove superior in others? Would metallurgical studies point the way to the development of still better refractories? Could magnetite formation be prevented in converter slags and reverber-atory furnace mattes? If this was feasible, why was a heavy circulating load of magnetite tolerated, when, in all probability, it increased copper losses in the reverberatory slags and, in some cases, made it necessary to shut down the furnaces periodically to clean out the accumulated magnetite? This paper presents only the highlights of previous research on the paleobotany of coal. The accumulated material has become so vast that a comprehensive review of all findings relating to paleobotany would be far too long. The fact that coal is derived from plants is now so well-known that no further comment is required, but knowledge of the mode of transformation of plant substances into coal is not so general. The plant matter goes first through processes of semirottins-, maceration, and elimination of certain material to form peat, which is then further transformed into coal. The first stage has been termed the "biochemical process," because the more important changes take place under the influence of micro-organisms. Near the end of the biochemical action an unconsolidated peat is formed. The second or "dynamochemical process," caused by the addition of superincumbent rock strata such as sandstones and shales and application of additional pressure and possibly heat through mountain-building forces, results in the formation of higher-rank coals ranging from brown coal to anthracite. These stages in trans-formation of plant material to coal have been described in previous reports.4 The main object of this paper is to bring to the notice of paleobotanists the fact that coal contains an enormous amount of material in a remarkably good state of preservation. Although some of the coal-forming matter has lost its identity, much of the original structure is retained. A large proportion of the coal, therefore, particularly of common bright coals, comprises constituents or components that invariably have retained some of the original plant structure, and many of these structures may be assigned to certain plants. The identity of these plants and of the remains forms the subject of this paper.

(San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) THE value of any particular ore, coke, or limestone, for iron-making, depends upon its effect, first, upon the quality or value of the resultant product; and second, upon the cost of smelting. The factors under the first head are the percentages of phosphorus, manganese, and other elements, which remain in the pig-iron ; while those under the second head are the percentages of iron, carbon, or lime, the slag-forming constituents, which must be fluxed, and any other ingredients which give rise to variations in cost of fuel and flux. The first of these criteria of value is perhaps not capable of being reduced to a general formula embracing all cases, since it must vary to a great extent with market-fluctuations. For example, Bessemer pig is worth sometimes more and sometimes less than foundry-pig ; and the premium paid for high manganese varies within wide limits. The second, or smelting-value, however, can be expressed numerically with a fair degree of accuracy; and it is with this phase of valuation that the present paper is concerned. The utility of a means of comparing numerically the relative smelting-values of different ores, cokes, and limestones, is self-evident, although it may not have importance in Northern practice, where materials are largely standardized. On the other hand, there are, especially in the South, many furnace-managers who must use a great variety of materials of widely varying grade; and it is with special reference to this district, and in connection with the efficiency-methods which I have elsewhere proposed,1 that the methods herein described were devised.

For many years it has been considered that an average of 50 percent of the coal in the deposits exploited has been recovered. Owing to many changes in mining methods during the past two decades, this study was initiated to obtain an up-to-date measurement of recovery percentage and thus establish part of the basis from which presently recoverable reserves may be estimated. Recovery percentages were determined within mined areas of 200 underground coal mines. These comprised a statistical sample selected to be representative of operating mines in relation to their significance to depletion of reserves. The results ranged from 29 to 91 percent and averaged 57.0 ± 1.7 percent (95-percent confidence limit). Six factors were identified mathematically as significantly affecting recovery percentages: (1) Pillaring system, (2) top rock and conditions, (3) bottom rock and conditions, (4) marketability, (5) coalbed thickness, and (6) productivity. Skill and attitude of mine operators toward recovery, although not measured, were probable factors. Five other variables that were tested did not show any significant relationship with recovery percentages. Also, five mining equipment features were identified, through discussions with mine officials, as affecting adversely recovery percentage at some mines.

This report describes Bureau of Mines experiments and reviews the work of others on the exposure of coal and coal-derived products to gamma rays and some other types of radiation. Results are presented on tests of three bituminous coals and a lignite that had been pulverized to minus 200-mesh particles and exposed to 1,000 megaroentgens of gamma irradiation from spent-fuel elements of a nuclear reactor. Of about 20 chemical and physical tests in Bureau work, only mass spectrometry of gases evolved during vacuum pyrolysis of the coals to 450° C gave results indicating differences in the irradiated and unirradiated samples. Mass-spectral distribution curves for CO and CO2 evolution showed fewer irregularities (reversals of curvature) for irradiated coals; thus, mass spectrometry appears to be the most sensitive method for determining radio-induced changes in coal. It is concluded that coal is not significantly altered by gamma irradiation owing to the resistivity of its highly condensed ring structure. High-level gamma irradiation, therefore, is unlikely to prove advantageous in coal processing and utilization. Specially treated coals, because of resistivity of coal to radiation damage, may be useful as an absorbent in processing radioactive wastes.

In August 1996 a Microseismic Monitoring System developed by ISS International Limited was installed at the Pasminco Broken Hill Mine -Southern Cross area. The project aims were to:Assist in daily safety management in a mine environment which exhibits one of the highest occurrences of microseismic activity recorded in the Australian mining industry. Be used as a proactive tool in design of future development and stoping. The project to-date has been an unqualified success in achieving both goals. Consequently the system is being expanded from 6 to 14 monitoring sites.

but, returning to South Africa, for the next two years he was assistant general manager of the Simmer Deep Gold Mining Co., at Johannesburg. In June, 1911, he returned to New Zealand as general manager and consulting engineer for the Consolidated Goldfields of New Zealand, at Reefton, which position he held at the time of his admission to the Institute in 1914. Early in September, 1915, he left New Zealand for active service in France. Corporal Sheppard B. Gordy Sheppard B. Gordy, born in Ansonia, Conn., in 1889, graduated from the Sheffield Scientific School in 1910 and with the degree of E. M. in 1912. He entered the employ of the Braden Copper Co. immediately on his graduation and remained with this company four years, working up through the various grades to assistant foreman and foreman to one of the individual mines. The last year he was in its employ, he acted as general mine foreman. He was for a short time with the Chile Exploration Co. and then went with the Andes Exploration Co. (Anaconda) and remained with the latter, doing mine exploration and development work, until he sailed for home in June, 1918, to give a more personal and active service to his country in her need. He declined a tender of induction into an officers' training camp, at the urgent request of Professor McClelland supplemented by Mr. Potter, because they demonstrated to his satisfaction that he could give more valuable service to his country in helping out with the aircraft production. Being within the draft age, in order to carry out this plan, it was necessary for him to be called by his Local Board and sent to camp. This call came Aug. 26. Two weeks before that time he had gone to Dayton, Ohio, to begin the study of aircraft production, and was sent by the Dayton Board to Camp Sherman, Chillicothe, Ohio, where he died of pneumonia on Oct. 9. Lieutenant Thomas Clarence Gorman Thomas C. Gorman, a lieutenant in the Second Tunnelling Company of the Canadian Engineers, was killed in France on Mar. 18, 1918. He was resting in his sleeping hut and was in the act of writing a letter when a bursting shell killed him.
