The Republic of Botswana, one of the newer countries of southern Africa, attained independence on September 30, 1966. It covers an area of about 225,000 square miles (582,000 square kilometers) which makes it slightly larger than France, or slightly smaller than Texas. It is bounded by Zimbabwe, the Republic of South Africa and Namibia, including the Caprivi Strip. Angola and Zambia are close neighbors. (Map 1). Botswana lies at the center of the southern African plateau at a mean elevation of 3,300 feet (1,000 m). It is a natural habitat for most species of African fauna. The rolling sands and extensive grasslands of the Kalahari Desert cover the southwest. The climate is sub- tropical. Summers, although tempered by north- easterly breezes, are hot, but mean maximum temperature seldom rises above 100°F (38°C). Winters are dry with wide temperature variations, which often give rise to frosts.

The market requirements which strip processing lines have to deal with have altered significantly within the last decades. Particularly, the production has to be economical and ecological efficient and processing lines have to cover a broad product portfolio. Already existing plants either directly or indirectly are competing with new plants, which are equipped with the latest technologies. The “Special Strip Processing Equipment” is designed to be integrated easily and within small downtime phases in existing lines. All single machines can be delivered in short time “ready-to-perform” with a tested and proved automation system. Thus, the competitiveness of existing lines can be increased immediately with less effort. To find out which machines can be reasonably implemented SMS group offers an “Efficiency Check”. A special proceeding is used by experts to find out quickly which machines will have the largest effect on the efficiency of the line while demanding at the same time the smallest expense.

The purpose of an undercut is to undermine a block of ore which will then proceed to cave into draw holes just below the undercut. Undercut-ting is the final and most vital phase in the development of an ore block. Since its purpose is to undermine and induce caving into a block of ore, great care must be exercised to avoid premature caving by removing only enough rock to permit undercut development to proceed. Several undercutting methods, used over a twenty-year period, are re-viewed and their suitability is com-pared with ideal requirements.

"INTRODUCTION This report is the second of a series of studies of analysis of energy requirements and characteristics of various machines used in the production of coal in underground mines and the losses in distribution of energy to these machines. The test equipment used in these studies is described in Report of Investigations 3615. 7/ The preliminary study data and results of tests made on various types of mechanical-leading cutting, and transporting equipment at two mines. This report is analysis of the energy requirements of the energy requirements of the underground equipment of a third mine. An analysis of the use of energy and its distribution usually requires in a saving in energy consumption and the reduction of hazards. The distribution system should be designed to supply energy effectively and study for the efficient operation of all machines."

the leaching of near-by rocks, had had no other result than to bring out from obscurity three certain features of practical lmport, all the labor of that controversy would have been well expended. These three points are : (1) a clear distinction between the vadose and the profound zones; (2) a determination of the manner in which the latter may be invaded by conditions of the former; and (3) an establishment of the general truth of the lateral-secretion theory when vadose conditions prevail, and of the. ascension-theory under profound conditions. In the practical consideration. of ore-deposits these generalizations are fundamental. Their wider application must be productive of great industrial advantages. Of first importance in the broader scientific survey of ore-genesis is the recognition of a sharp distinction between vadose and profound conditions. To many who listened to Professor Posepny's remarkable paper, read at the Chicago session of the Institute during the Columbian Exposition in 1893, this seemed, as Dr. S. F. Emmons has already observed, its most valuable and suggestive feature. Notwithstanding Posepny's implications to the contrary, and his vigorous berating of Sandberger's views, the immediate and lasting .effect of the . argument was really to strengthen greatly Sandberger's position. For it completely and sharply separated the lateral-secretionists from the ascensionists, raising the sphere of the former bodily above the line of permanent water-level and at the same time confining .the sphere of the latter to regions below that horizon. A little later, Professor Van Rise showed in some detail how meteoric waters may deeply invade the profound zone and carry vadose conditions into it. The zonal limitations of two great and apparently opposed agencies being thus definitely fixed, it is found that neither of the theories based thereon is susceptible of general application. If the generalizations of the lateral-secretionist be propounded solely for vadose conditions, we are able to agree with all of his more-important contentions; while there is general acquiescence in the views of the ascensionist if their application be restricted to the profound zone. In 2011, the value of mineral production increased in the United States for the second consecutive year (Table 1). Production increased modestly for most mineral commodities mined in the United States, and price increases, especially for precious metals, resulted in increases in the value of production. Minerals remained fundamental to the U.S. economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels, including mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. Minerals? contribution to the GDP increased for the second consecutive year. Trends in other sectors of the domestic economy were similar to those in mineral production and consumption rates. U.S. apparent mineral consumption (industrial) of 11 mineral commodities decreased substantially from 2005 to 2010 (aluminum, cadmium, cement, copper, iron, lead, salt, soda ash, steel, tin and zinc). Data for 2011 were not calculated, but the data show a sustained decrease (especially for the metals) preceding the recession through 2010, so consumption seems to be behaving differently than production and GDP. After continued decline following the 2008?2009 recession, the construction industry began to show signs of improvement during 2011, with increased production and consumption of cement, construction sand and gravel, and gypsum ? mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction. Crushed stone production, however, continued to decline.

Variography was introduced by Dr. Pierre Gy to monitor a process, in the sixties. Later on, Francis Pitard extended this concept, building a complete system of variographic controls for different applications. Nevertheless, the existence of information about its use as a way to effectively control plants has been limited. There are infinite areas where variography and chronostatistics can be used. In this paper, two different cases related to gold and silver recovery, through well known but complex metallurgical routes are studied. The use of effective management of process variability software (EMPV) has shown to be a suitable solution to clarify problems at the plant and, consequently, a solution to the encountered problems has been proposed. Chronostatistics is like opening a new world to the metallurgist, making the process variability speak in a more comprehensive and in depth way. Once the ore has been extracted from the mine, sampling is necessary at each sequence of the metallurgical process involved. As a first example, leaching of the ore with cyanide in agitated tanks is another case of a complex metallurgy. The aim of the process is to know about residual values in the tailings in order to optimize process. As a second example, leaching of gold and silver in ore heaps, has to be optimized in terms of time, reagents consumption and, of course, in predicting a reasonable recovery. This last issue appears to be crucial. After cyanide leaching at the heaps, a carbon in columns process is involved, where there are a series of carbon loaded columns that are submitted to a dynamic process of load and unload, to finally deliver an enriched solution to the precious metal electrowinning plant. In both cases, variography has been a good approach to show metallurgists ways to improve the operation.

"The information presented in this report is a by-product of studies concerning zinc, and is published in response to various inquiries for information as to the suitability of zinc for roofing. It parallels a previous report of the Bureau of Mines on slate roofing.Available Forms of Zinc RoofingZinc is available for roofing in three forms: 1. As sheet zinc which may be used advantageously on roofs with as flat a pitch as 1 in 4; laid with standing seam construction for small roofs and with batten construction for large roofs. 2. As corrugate sheets, in widths up to 40 inches and in lengths up to 8 and feet, available for siding and roofing in industrial buildings (with certain re¬strict ions) and or farm buildings (without restrictions). 3. In the form of shingles.Advantages of Zinc Roofing1. Zinc is a permeant roofing material; that is, when suited to the conditions, and properly applied to a roof designed with the right purlin spacing it will outlast the building and still have a salvage value equal to a least half the original material cost. It is applicable to a wide range of conditions, from the most expensive to the cheapest type of construction, and is not greatly above the cheaper materials in first cost. A permanent roof of simple outline need not cost over $15 to $25 per square (100 square feet), depending upon the method of construction required a corrugated sheet roof for industrial purposes or for farm use need not cost over $15 per square for ordinary conditions. 3. Corrugated zinc sheets have the distinct advantage of being available for re-use and re-construction if handled with ordinary care. 4. Zinc oxidizes to a certain point, building up a strong protective coating which in time effectually checks further oxidation; thus it does not oxidize to the point of destruction as steel does, 5. It is light and easily handled."

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary and detailed exploratory examinations of iron and copper ores on Prince of Wales Island have been conducted by the Bureau of Mines from early in 1942 until the end of 1944. Among these investigations was that of the Jumbo magnetite deposit, which was visited by Stephen P. Holt, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, during a preliminary examination of the Copper Mountain and Jumbo properties September 15 to 18, 1943, During the months of June, July, and August 1944, a more detailed examination, which consisted essentially of mapping and sampling, was made by the authors working in conjunction with George C. Kennedy of the Geological Survey, Geological, topographical, and dip-needle contour maps were made of the area, and 97 channel samples were cut.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. The process metallurgy of many nickel laterite smelting operations is controlled largely by the physical chemistry of the slag system. Consequently, accurate phase diagram information and physicochemical property data are essential to interpret and predict the behaviour and optimisation of the overall process. The system (SiO2 - MgO - FeO) first described by Bowen et al. between 1914 and 1935 and the system (SiO2 - MgO - FeO - Fe2O3) determined by Muan and Osborne in 1956 are of particular relevance to the study of nickel laterite smelting slags as these systems form a reasonable approximation of many industrial slags. This paper will review the literature for these (and other relevant) phase systems. In addition data available from the ternary and (quasi)ternary phase diagrams will be compared with data obtained from industrial slags. The physico-chemical properties under consideration will include; melting and crystallisation behaviour (solidus and liquidus temperatures), viscosity - temperature relationships, heat flux considerations, electrical conductivity, surface and interfacial tension.

Mr. H. R. Batcheller, of the class of 1894, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, while experimenting with chlorine gas on a certain lot of roasted concentrates, met with the following difficulties: 1. A poor extraction of the gold. 2. A very large consumption of chlorine gas. 3. Inability to precipitate all of the gold from the solutioil containing the AuC1,. 4. The bullion obtained was very base. These difficulties were the same whether the chlorine was generated from H2SO47 MnO29 and salt, or whether H2SO, and bleaching powder were used. They may be accounted for partly by the presence of some arsenic left in the roasted ore, and partly by the presence of copper in the solution containing the AuCI3. It was therefore suggested to try the effect of bromine on a similar lot of ore. The use of this element is, of course, nothing new, but in the following experiments it seemed to present many advantages over chlorine. The material worked upon consisted of some concentrates containing 2.31 ounces of gold per ton, and 34.26 per cent. of arsenic, which would correspoild to about 74.4 per cent. Of

In 1918 the American Society for Testing Materials held a symposium2 on what was then known as season cracking. The sessions included six papers, all on brass. During the ensuing 26 yr., many new workers have come into the field and several other metals have been found subject to failure by stress-corrosion cracking when the right combination of stress and environment is achieved. It is not surprising, therefore, that the present symposium has brought forth 29 papers covering alloys of seven important metals. The phenomenon of stress-corrosion cracking is not necessarily confined to these seven metals. Dix3 has stated, "Indeed, it is probable that ingenious investigators can find solutions which will stress-corrosion crack any known metal or alloy." Mears, Brown, and Dix4 have indicated that stress- corrosion cracking failures are not necessarily limited to metals but may include the plastics. It is to be expected that the increase in the number of metals known to crack in service and the general emphasis on such failures at a symposium such as this will alarm many to whom the subject is un- familiar. "INTRODUCTION The behavior of particles in a sound field has long been of scientific interest since Kundt (1) 5/ made his classic experiments on some of the interesting effects of standing waves in cylindrical tubes. With the development of the electronic tube and its application to continuous generation of sound, experimental investigation of the Kundt tube was renewed (2). The more intense vibrations set up by a continuously vibrating diaphragm or rod produce even more striking effects than those observed by Kundt. Instead of the striations at the antinode produced by the stroked rod, then, wafer like barriers are formed at the antinodes, sometimes extending over the entire cross-section of the tube. Furthermore, it was observed independently by Andrade (3), Brandt, Freund and Hiedemann (4); and by investigators in the Bureau of Mines laboratories (5) that aerosols, such as ammonium chloride or tobacco smoke, could be flocculated quickly if passed through an intense sound field, particularly when a standing wave field was set up by a resonant enclosure. Because of its possibilities as a new means for removing suspended particles from dust-laden gaseous furance or smoke, the phenomena attending the behavior of suspended particles in a und field have been studied intermittently by the Bureau of Mines over the past decade.The first experimental work was done with a magnetostriction vibrator and a Hartmann air-jet generator as sound sources. It soon became evident that neither type was entirely satisfactory. Low mechanical efficiency is an inherent characteristic of magnetostriction generators, and the air-jet generator is difficult to control and does not permit accurate measurement of the acoustic output. The search for a suitable sound source led to the development of an electromagnetic generator, which is by far the most suitable for study of the effects of intensive high-frequency sound fields in gases (6)."

The paper gives a summary of the role and objectives of the CME, including its history, structure and key program areas. Particular attention is given to the role of the CME in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. The paper details the types of CME membership that are currently in existence. The paper argues that a strong and vibrant CME is vital to secure the resources sectorÆs growth and development in future years.

A crescente preocupação em relação às áreas de proteção ambiental e ao alto consumo de argila, matéria-prima da cerâmica vermelha, ocasiona a indisponibilização progressiva de reservas de argilas no Brasil. Com isso, vê-se a necessidade de incorporar resíduos na massa argilosa para confecção de produtos de cerâmica vermelha. A indústria de cerâmica vermelha brasileira consome cerca de 10 milhões de toneladas de argila ao mês para produção de telhas e blocos. Na própria olaria são gerados resíduos, tal como, o resíduo de massa cerâmica crua originado na etapa de conformação das peças. Este trabalho visa incorporar o resíduo de massa cerâmica crua na massa argilosa usada em cerâmica vermelha. O resíduo foi caracterizado por meio de ensaios de FRX, DRX, limites de Atterberg e distribuição de tamanho de partículas. Corpos de prova feitos com massa argilosa e resíduo em teores variando de 10% a 90% (massa) foram conformados, secos à 110ºC, queimados à 900ºC em forno industrial e submetidos a ensaios de absorção de água, porosidade aparente, massa específica aparente e resistência à compressão. Os resultados evidenciaram que as propriedades cerâmicas avaliadas nos corpos de prova da massa argilosa incorporada com o resíduo atendem aos valores das argilas-padrão brasileiras para cerâmica vermelha.

Froth flotation processes are carried out in flotation cells that are grouped into banks, and these banks are interconnected, forming a flotation circuit. A literature review shows the existence of papers related to flotation circuit design based on mathematical programming. However, due to the complexity of solving the mathematical model in most of the work, it is considered that a small number of species is present in the feed to the circuit, which differs from practice. In addition, simple bank models are generally used. This paper presents a methodology for designing mineral concentration circuits that overcomes the problems mentioned. It allows the use of more suitable cell or bank models and the inclusion of several species. The methodology is based on two phases. The first phase identifies the set of optimal structures using discrete values of stage recoveries, solving several mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problems. In the second phase, the optimal design for each of the structures obtained in the previous phase is determined using a suitable model for the recovery at each cell or bank, which results in a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model. The design of a copper concentration plant with eight species and the design of a zinc concentration plant with three species and five size fractions by species are used to validate the proposed methodology. The structure of the cells in the rougher and cleaner banks deliver structures that are novel.

Debswana, owned by the Government of the Republic of Botswana (GRB) and De Beers in a 50:50 joint venture partnership, operates the Jwaneng diamond mine in Botswana - the most valuable diamond mine in the world. The mine provides between 60 - 70 per cent of DebswanaÆs earnings, and about 30 - 40 per cent of the GRBÆs income. In 2008, the company embarked on the Cut 8 Project - an open pit waste cut-back to expose more diamond bearing ore to sustain mine life by another six to seven years. This undertaking was much larger than previous cut-backs; it increased the waste stripping ratio threefold, increasing significantly the waste handling fleet of trucks, shovels and infrastructure, and impacted a large part of the materials handling plant which required replacement with new facilities. The project coincided with the beginning of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and a slowdown in the economy. Its $4 billion total life cost was billed as æthe largest private investment project in BotswanaÆ which produced heightened expectations amongst stakeholders that it would redress some of the issues brought about by the GFC and leave behind a legacy of jobs, increased opportunities for citizen owned business and improved social infrastructure.Most of the big project challenges were non-technical and ranged from dealing with various stakeholders?at?all levels, a 25 per cent currency depreciation of the Botswana Pula against the South African Rand, obtaining work permits for non-citizens in a job starved environment, managing construction to world class safety standards, managing the low productivity of construction workers and producing a viable legacy program that satisfied the GRB and stakeholders. Whilst most of these risks were identified in front end studies, the magnitudes were in many instances underestimated. Managing this uncertainty on Cut 8 can provide valuable lessons to other projects in a similar environment, or at least provide the information to indicate that these factors should be adequately provided for in the financial evaluation of a project in the form of budget, schedule, contingency or risk mitigation.CITATION:Jones, G M and J Rademan, 2012. 1 Initiating Systems ? a definition An initiation system is a combination of explosive devices and component accessories specifically designed to convey a signal and initiate an explosive charge from a safe distance. In the use of explosives, the initiating system performs the functions of transmission and control of the firing signal to each explosive charge. As functional groups, initiating systems may be considered as: Starters Those which provide the initial signal to start the blasting process. Surface systems Products which provide transmission of the starter signal and delay timing (if any) across the surface of the blast outside the blast hole. In-hole systems Products which provide the signal transmission, delay timing (if any) and the initial explosives energy in the blast hole.1 2 Different types of Initiating Systems The initiation systems commonly used in Sub Saharan Africa are: ? Detonating cord and detonating relay systems ? Capped fuse and igniter cord systems ? Shock tube non electric systems ? Electric systems ? Electronic detonators 3 Overview of Electronic Delay Detonator Technology Conventional detonators use pyrotechnic delay elements and the variation of the actual delay periods is at best approximately 1% the nominal delay. The lack of guaranteed precision common to all pyrotechnic systems enhances the likelihood of negative environmental blasting effects.3 For example, take a 500 ms in hole delay. In conventional detonators this means that 95 % of shots fire within 10 ms of the mean. i.e. a window of 20 ms. Taking a fixed interval between shots of 25 ms, with a range of ± 3 ms, a very ragged firing pattern could be expected which in practice would result in non uniform fragmentation.

Bulk and differential laboratory flotation tests have been carried out using a synthetic mixture of chalcopyrite and molybdenum ore. In addition to boiling and roasting, six different depressants are tested so that the best conditions of separation can be identified. These reagents include sodium cyanide with and without zinc sulfate, potassium ferrocyanide, sodium hydrosulfide, arsenic Noke's reagent, and sodium sulfide. The data indicate that most of these reagents are effective chalcopyrite depressants. However, sodium hydrosul fide can be used preferably if economic, operational, and environmental factors are taken into consideration.

This paper presents a design approach and analytical methods that were used for assessing the potential of static liquefaction and developing the mitigation measures for a tailings dams. The rigour of the design and analysis approach represented leading practise in the industry to address static liquefaction, which contributed to a robust design with high confidence and certainty. The salient features of our approach to static liquefaction included geotechnical investigation and tailings characterisation, static liquefaction screening assessment, static liquefaction triggering analysis, limit equilibrium analyses and numerical modelling of static liquefaction using the NorSand model, which was amongst the first tailings dam projects involving numerical modelling of static liquefaction using these methods.
