The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted studies using microwave energy to stress-crack iron ores. In a microwave chamber which simulates a continuous throughput operation, the Bond grindability of a taconite sample was improved by 13 pct at a bulk temperature of 197? C. To further improve the economics of microwave fracturing, higher powers up to 16 kW were used to rapidly heat samples to relatively low temperatures in a continuous belt-fed applicator. A significant enhancement of grindability was obtained with a minus 1.9-cm taconite rod mill feed. At a sample temperature of 130? C, the grindability was improved a maximum of 26.1 pct over the non-microwaved sample.

Five conclusions that emerged from ADL's Contractor Noise Measurements Assessment done for the Bureau of Mines and the 7 December 1971 Bureau of Mines Contractors' Round Table Meeting in Boulder, Colorado were: ? a limited amount of good data has been obtained for characterizing the noise environment for electromagnetic (EM) coal mine operational/emergency communications systems; ? significant noise date gaps still exist; ? suitable instrumentation and data analysis methods are available for filling these data gaps; ? the immediate and most important data gaps should be filled by means of a timely field measurement effort that is purposely limited in scope and duration; ? this field measurement effort should preferably be carried out by a team knowledgeable and experienced in coal mine EM noise measurements.

THAT gold ores occur in Georgia is a fact apparently not widely known outside of that state, yet in the last hundred years nearly $18,000,000 worth of gold has been mined there. The discovery of gold-hearing quartz was made in 1823 on the "Forty Acre Lot" (which now belongs to the Columbia Mining Co.), in McDuffie County, and about seven years later the first stamp mill on record was erected near there. In recent years Georgia's gold production has dwindled to an insignificant figure. However, with the increase in gold price, interest in this district has been revived, so an electrical geophysical survey was undertaken to aid in discovering new quartz veins, on a part of the Forty Acre Lot, the adjoining Hamilton mine, and the nearby Woodall property.

THE Federated American Engineering Societies through its Executive Board has endorsed House Bill 5230, introduced April 26, 1921, which provides for- the completion of the topographical survey of the United States. Before this bill can be reported out it will be necessary for the House Committee on -interstate and foreign commerce to hold hearings. This will not be done unless the engineers of the country show interest -and demand action which should be taken immediately after the recess ends and Congress reconvenes this fall. Surveys and maps have been made in this country ever since Captain John Smith mapped Chesapeake Bay about. 300 years ago, but it is only in comparatively recent years that the need for accurate maps has been keenly felt by those engaged in the industrial' and commercial development of the country.

The effects of air quality regulations passed in the last few years have been felt in a more pervasive way by the electric utility industry than by perhaps any other industry. I'm referring especially to those regulations dealing with the control of air emissions from stationary sources, and those specifying the quality of fuel used. Particularly, I would like to describe some of the effects that these regulations have had on the Commonwealth Edison Company. To put the subject into perspective, a brief descrip¬tion of the company will be presented first. Then, a historical outline of some of the efforts at control of electric generating station emissions will be described. Following this will be an indication of the Company's response to early State and local regulations prompted by the growing pressure for stringent envi¬ronmental control. Finally, the Company's plans to achieve com¬pliance with the most recent, Federally approved, State of Illinois regulations will be summarized.

The Arkansas Novaculite of Devonian and Mississippian age is the most distinctive formation in the central Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas from the standpoint of both topography and lithology. The formation typically forms precipitous, narrow ridges (hogbacks) which reflect the steepness of dip and the resistance and thickness of the rock units. The Arkansas Novaculite varies from less than 200 feet thick in the north to locally over 800 feet thick in the south and outcrops over an east-west distance of 360 km (200 miles) in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Most of the rocks of the formation are highly siliceous with novaculite predominating, and lesser quantities of chert, siliceous shale, conglomerate and rarely sandstone. Novaculite is commonly defined as a homogeneous mostly white rock, translucent on thin edges with a dull to waxy luster and composed almost entirely of microcrystalline quartz. The word novaculite comes from the Latin word novacula, meaning razor hone. This term was first used by Richard Kirwan in his mineralogy text of 1784. The origin of novaculite remains controversial but we believe it was a primary silica derived mostly from the alteration of submarine volcanic-rich materials, with numerous fine biogenic components and some minor clastics (derived mostly from foreland facies via turbidity currents) and deposited as an amorphous siliceous ooze in the deep Ouachita trough. It was subsequently converted to microcrystalline quartz during diagenesis by the compaction of the overlying rocks and the intense Late Paleozoic Ouachita Mountain tectonism. In the central and southern portions of the region three divisions of the formation have been defined: a Lower Division predominantly of light-colored novaculite; a Middle Division of interbedded dark chert and shale; and an Upper Division of massive often calcareous novaculite. In the northern exposures the formation is thinner and contains more black chert and shale, chert-shale conglom¬erate, sandstone and less novaculite. The massive novaculite of the Upper and Lower Divisions is a source of high purity silica (99+%). Indians were the first to use novaculite. They made their various tools and hunting implements from the weathered broken rock until they learned the quarrying techniques. The first white men in the area recognized the use of novaculite for sharpening their tools and knives: previously whetstones were obtained in small quantities from Europe. To this day whetstone is quarried mostly in areas which the Indians and possibly the Spanish previously worked. Some of the current mining practices have changed very little from those of the early quarryman. In areas where the novaculite of the Upper Division is poorly cemented, this friable tripolitic material has found applications in such uses as an abrasive, as a filler or extender in paints, plastics and other purposes. Some of the dense novaculite is suitable as a filler in fire bricks and also in plastics. Because some of it has the tendency to decrepitate when heated not all novaculite can be used for these applications. Several quarry operators are crushing novaculite for road, concrete, and other aggregate. This use was formerly rather limited due to the abrasiveness of the novaculite on crushing and screening equipment. Further potential uses of novaculite are speculative but include application of high purity silica in the production of silicon metal for solar cells, seed or "growing", and fusing quartz for electronics.

The normal practice for processing complex sulphide ore has been to grind with steel balls and/or rods in steel mills before flotation. Little thought had been given to the effect of grinding media on flotation selectivity of copper-lead -zinc ore until 1960 when Rey and Formanek(1) published their experiments on sphalerite floatability after grinding in a porcelain mill with ceramic pebbles. The studies by Rey and Formanek had a pronounced effect on the milling of copper-lead-zinc ores in Canada and possibly throughout the world at a time when autogenous grinding was creating a great deal of interest. The impression was created, and possibly still exists with some mill men, that grinding an ore in the absence of steel will result in a loss of selectivity between copper, lead and zinc minerals. This is in spite of the fact Rey and Formanek's experiments showed that the "naturall floatability" of sphalerite was not apparent after grinding in a porcelain pebble mill in an alkaline pulp.

Mining companies globally are going through a series of challenges such as declining ore grades with complex metallurgy, increasing depth of ore bodies, high capital and operating costs, lower productivity, shortage of technical resources, significant pressure from stake-holders to deliver, along with growing environmental and corporate social responsibility issues. Improvement in profitability would need significant improvements in operational performance.Consequently, over the last few years, there has been a major focus among some mining companies to imbibe operational excellence. This has been only possible because of the replacement of a silos-based approach by an integrated view of the organization. Such an integrated view is now possible via the evolving digital technologies. Even so, such a transformation calls for a change in culture, which, for most organizations is not trivial. Attempts in the past to integrate functions, such as through mine-to-mill initiatives in the mining industry, have demonstrated significant benefits to many operations (McKee, 2013). Still, sustaining these benefits has clearly been a challenge due to manpower turnover and lack of proper systems and structures that integrate information between business functions within an operation and between operations and the corporate level.Opportunities. The advent of digital technology has opened up opportunities to integrate interdepartmental information for a unified understanding across an entire organization. The advances in instrumentation, equipment control systems, supervisory control systems (SCADA/ Historian) and industrial networks have helped in the direction of enterprise- wide integration. In certain areas of the New Cornelia pit, considerable secondary blasting is necessary to reduce oversized boulders, formed from primary blasting, to pieces which will pass the 41/2-cu yd dippers on the shovels. Some of the boulders are 'dobied, but when time permits they are blockholed and blasted. In most instances one hole drilled to a depth of 2 to 3 ft and blasted with 1/3 to 1/2 of a stick of powder will break a boulder satisfactorily. Blockholing is normally done by using a jackhammer of the 55-lb class, 1-in. round drill steel, and detachable steel bits, 2-in. gauge when new. A bit change is usually made after the completion of each hole. The use of light drilling equipment in blockholing is desirable, both from the standpoint of safety and ease of doing the work, and when it was seen there was a possibility of using a lighter jackhammer through the use of tungsten-carbide bits and at the same time get at least the same drilling efficiency as with the standard equipment, it was decided to test tungsten-carbide bits. The claims for long life of the bits and footage drilled before resharpening gave hopes of eliminating much of the delay time in changing bits which is unavoidable with the use of steel bits. and thus gain in actual drilling time.

Pit lake chemistry depends on the lithology and hydrologic characteristics of the ultimate pit surface, the availability of buffering capacity in the wall rock versus oxidizable sulfide content, and the alkalinity of recharging ground water. In this paper, we assess the geochemistry of 11 existing pit lakes, ranging from the acidic Red Hill and Berkeley pit lakes (pH 2.6 to 2.8) to the alkaline Yerington Pit lake (pH 8.45). Predicted pit lake chemistry is similar to that in existing pits with the long-term pit lake chemistry lying on a geochemical continuum between end members consisting of influent calcium bicarbonate ground water, and naturally occurring sulfate-rich evaporite playa lakes.

Metallurgical treatments of sulfide ores containing copper and zinc are characterized by significant losses of base metals, particularly formation of the flotation tailings and slags during the dressing and pyrometallurgical treatment respectively. In addition, SO2 gas obtained during roasting and converting may be as raw material for sulfuric acid production. A treatment of the industrial metallurgical wastes has been investigated. Two samples of old pyrite tailings from two concentrators that contained 0.36% and 0.26% of copper and 0.23% and 0.22% of zinc were leached with 10% sulfuric acid in the column. Recovery of copper reached 47% and 38% while recovery of zinc was 47% and 41% from the first and second samples, respectively. The pregnant leach solutions contained 15.9 g/l and 10.5 g/l of ferric iron. Ferric iron is the strong oxidant and ferric containing pregnant leach solutions can be used for ferric leaching of different types of raw materials containing sulfide minerals. Therefore, ferric leaching of copper converter slag flotation tailings contained 0.53% of copper and 2.77% of zinc with the first pregnant leach solution was conducted. The effect of various experimental parameters on the leaching dynamics of copper, zinc, and iron under batch conditions was investigated. Under the best conditions (temperature 70oC, pulp density 30%) the recovery of copper and zinc reached 80% and 42%, respectively. Thus, it has been shown that acid leaching of base metals from old pyrite flotation tailings with using of the pregnant leach solution for the ferric leaching of copper converter slag flotation tailings is a prospective technique for the complex treatment of mining and metallurgical wastes. Investigated processes could be introduced into the technological flow-sheet of typical pyrometallurgical plants.

When Marco Polo visited China in the 13th century, no one knew what black powder was except the Chinese; they knew enough to make dazzling fireworks with it. But the realization that black powder could also do useful work came much later and, like all important discoveries, it altered the course of history. It was in the 14th century that black powder was first used to break rock in a very crude way; there were no drills and the powder was simply poured into cracks and exploded by setting it afire. Because its energy value was pretty low, the need for something more powerful was felt when the industrial revolution began. In the 1850s, miners began experimenting with liquid nitroglycerine on a limited scale. This was a very sensitive and dangerous explosive. Fortunately in the 1860s, Alfred Nobel succeeded in stabilizing nitroglycerine by absorbing it in kieselguhr-and a new product, dynamite, was born. With it, miners were able to unleash the great energy of nitroglycerine for blasting purposes. But dynamite was still a very sensitive explosive. In subsequent years, other explosives of various strengths and characteristics were developed, such as blasting gelatin, gelatin dynamite, ammonia dynamites, (all containing some nitroglycerine or nitrostarch), and liquid oxygen explosives. These products and their variations supplied the blasting trade for many years. A grained ammonium nitrate product containing some carbonaceous material entered the market in the 1930s. This explosive had below-zero sensitivity-meaning: a No. 6 blasting cap imbedded in it would not detonate it. A more sensitive initiator, called a primer, was needed to detonate this mixture. From Rags to Primacord to Solid-State The first initiator for an explosive charge was probably a rag slowly burning its way to the charge; this method was quite unreliable. Then came the burning fuse, which was an improvement. Next was the nonelectric blasting cap initiated by a fuse. With these initiators, a miner needed quick reflexes and good legs; upon lighting the fuse, he had to run immediately for cover. Development of the electric blasting cap that allowed for accurate timing eliminated this hazard; the electric cap, however, introduced other safety problems because of its susceptibility to extraneous electricity, e.g., ground currents, lightning, and static electricity. These caps also became available in millisecond delays. Development in the mid-1930s of Primacord, a detonating fuse insensitive to electrical currents or impact, further reduced blasting hazards, and is generally acknowledged as the safest known means of initiation. Eventually, Primacord millisecond connectors also became available for delay patterns in blasting. In the mid-1960s, the Primadet delay was introduced; it is a practical nonelectric detonator system that offers the precise timing of electric blasting caps-and is immune to the hazards or effects of extraneous electricity. Recently, Research Energy of Ohio, Inc. introduced a new type of solid-state blasting machine that combines a sequential timer and delay caps. It enables the efficient breakage of rock with a minimum amount of shock, ground vibration, and noise. Improvements in Blast-Hole Drilling World War II created an enormous demand for coal and other minerals in the U.S. and elsewhere. Great efforts and large amounts of capital were spent to find new mineral deposits and develop better mining methods. But while mechanization in mining proceeded at a rapid pace particularly in open-cut work, there was a definite lag in developing new or improved machines for drilling blast holes. The industry continued to depend largely on horizontal, churn, and pneumatic drills. No better machine was available for large scale production. The need for improvement in this phase of mining became more acute in the post-war years. Despite efforts toward further mechanization, mining costs rose rapidly because of mounting inflation and increasingly high wages. In most operations, drilling and blasting the overburden became the principal item of cost. Therefore, whatever size holes were being drilled, the holes had to be spaced so that any foot of the bore hole could be loaded with the maximum load required for the number of cubic yards of material that each foot of the hole was carrying. As Australia’s mining industry painfully retrenches, mining executives and managers strive to remain viable by seeking significant productivity increases directly through process improvement and indirectly by improving leadership and workplace culture, the most powerful determinant of productivity. Culture is the combination of people’s attitudes and behaviour, together with leadership values and focus.Comprehensive new and automated data collection and management systems promise much for improving productivity, yet despite rapid advances in measurement and sharing of data, the use of data can reduce productivity unless behavioural aspects are considered and designed as part of implementation. This is because systems drive behaviour that in turn shapes attitudes to determine culture.Experience from many mine sites and other industries in three countries confirm that the most powerful drivers of people’s behaviour are the Measurement-Analysis-Reporting system and business leadership.This paper discusses fundamentals of practical, statistically valid process measurement, analysis and reporting systems before discussing associated leadership considerations for sustained improvement in safety, productivity, employee retention, leadership, accountability and commercial returns.The key to productivity improvement is improving core processes and important support processes. In turn, the key to process improvement is identifying the major process components and their interaction by measuring and then analysing their variation and level of performance. Understanding variation is often neglected yet is usually highly significant. It is essential that the fundamentals of statistically valid yet practical process and data analysis are understood and incorporated into system design to ensure productive, informed behaviour.The design and use of Measurement-Analysis-Reporting systems influences behaviour most profoundly and determines people’s effectiveness. Behavioural aspects are detailed by focusing on six primary drivers of human behaviour and five basic systems for managing businesses. Traditionally Australia has been a leader in underground mining methods with world standards being established at Mount Isa, Broken Hill, Kalgoorlie, and Mount Lyell. With decline in higher-grade reserves and discovery of a multitude of near-surface oxide gold de-posits attention has shifted to bulk mining of low-grade gold ores by open pit methods, heap leaching and activated carbon recovery of gold values. The paper examines historical change in mining philosophy and the economic effects of isolation.

"This paper presents the results of in-situ tests conducted on a set of under-reamed piles in a silty sand deposit. Three piles (i.e. vertical, vertical with one bulb and vertical with two bulbs) of diameter 0.2 m were cast upto a depth of 5 m. The pile cap had four foundation bolts cast into it so that a mechanical oscillatormotor assembly could be mounted centrally on it. The oscillator-motor assembly was used to generate purely sinusoidal dynamic forces, in either horizontal or vertical directions. For both horizontal and vertical vibration cases, it was observed that (i) the natural frequencies decreased with an increase in the excitation force level, (ii) for the same excitation level, the natural frequencies as well as the maximum amplitude of vibration are almost the same irrespective of the pile geometry i.e. number of bulbs in the pile, indicating that the full pile length is not being excited. For the vertical vibration case, the soil-pile stiffness at frequencies, before resonance, were observed to be higher than those at frequencies after resonance. In the horizontal vibration case, the stiffness of the soil-pile system was found to be decreasing with an increase in the excitation force level. The damping ratio was found to be increasing with an increase in the excitation force level.INTRODUCTIONUnder-reamed piles are piles, normally upto a depth of 6 m, with one or more bulbs along the pile stem. These have been used for structures like transmission towers, structures on expansive soils etc. for a very long time, however it is only in the last 30 years that dynamic response of a pile has been studied. Evaluation of dynamic soil-pile interaction is a very complex problem as the conditions and properties of soil are highly variable and unpredictable. Various models and approaches have been suggested by various investigators for evaluating the dynamic soil-pile interaction problem, but most of them are based on the assumptions that the behaviour of soil is linear and the soil surrounding the pile is strongly adhered to it. But in practice, it is not so. The soil surrounding the pile is always somewhat loosened and undergoes some deformation when a sinusoidal load is applied. This causes the soil-pile system to behave nonlinearly.In earlier studies by Novak, (1974), Novak and Aboul-Ella, (1978) etc. a linear elastic behaviour of soil was assumed. This approach was very useful in understanding the mechanism of soil-pile interaction to a large extent. Subsequently various models were suggested like the lumped mass models with nonlinear discrete springs, dashpots and friction elements Matlock et al. (1978), weak cylindrical zone around the pile model Novak and Sheta, (1980), ideal boundary zone model with non-reflective interface, Han and Sabin, (1995) etc. These approximate solutions give an idea about the mechanism of dynamic pile-soil interaction to a large extent. However, in reality both separation and slippage can occur due to the formation of a weak bond at the contact surface between the soil and the pile when a dynamic load is applied. In addition, the soil column adjacent to the pile experiences large deformations under dynamic loads and thus behaves nonlinearly.Some computer aided model studies on the dynamic response of under-reamed piles have been reported, however, very few insitu dynamic tests on under-reamed piles are reported. Dynamic tests on piles were carried out by Novak and Grigg (1976) on small scale single piles and pile groups in the field. Similar field tests on small scale piles were conducted to study the nonlinear behaviour of a single pile and a pile group under strong harmonic excitation by Han and Novak (1988), Han and Vaziri (1992), Burr et al. (1997), Manna and Baidya (2010) etc. The majority of these experimental studies were focussed on the response of the specific pile groups and compared with the results of a single pile. A mining company has entered into contractual commitments to supply certain quantities of its product to clients in each time period. Failure to fulfil its obligations would damage its reputation as a reliable supplier. The planned production would normally be sufficient unless major problems such as highwall failures, roof falls, natural disaster, or strikes that interrupt production or delays in obtaining environmental permits, occur. To overcome these difficulties, the company may be able to obtain more of the commodity: from its strategic stockpile (if there is sufficient there); by buying it on the spot market; or for some commodities such as gold and uranium, by leasing it. Two sources of uncertainty, the spot price of the commodity and the occurrence of serious incidents that interrupt production, are considered. For simplicity it is assumed that the commodity price follows a geometric Brownian motion, that productions incidents have a binomial distribution, that they are independent from one time period to another and that they do not affect prices. A branching tree structure is used to model the joint evolution of prices and production incidents. The aim of this research project was to evaluate the companyÆs options for fulfilling its contractual commitments. When evaluating these options, multi-stage stochastic programming with recourse was used to solve this problem because in addition to providing the dollar value of the project, it gives decision-makers the æroadmapÆ to reach the optimal value. That is, how much material should be bought/sold on the spot market, how much to add to/subtract from the stockpile, how much to lease and in the worst case what the shortfall would be, for each time period as a function of the current spot price and breakdown status. A case-study over a five-year period is used to illustrate the proposed procedure. In this study the production would be sufficient to cover the companyÆs contractual commitments unless production incidents occur. Focus is on evaluating the impact of the quantity initially in the stockpile on the value of the project when the commodity market is tight, that is, when only small quantities can be bought on the spot market or by leasing.

Foreword At the outset, it should be stated that this paper does not pretend to present a panacea for the ills that 'frozen' wells are heir to, but rather is an attempt to bring to the attention of those whose special concern it is, a little theory and some facts, which have been brought to light recently, in connection with the problem of 'freezing' as it applies to naphtha-producing wells in the Turner Valley field, and to draw some conclusions that follow from the facts discovered. It should also be stated that the investigation is not to be regarded as in any sense complete, but in progress. Doubtless new facts will be brought to light from time to time which may modify present ideas on the subject, but whether favourable or contrary, these will be welcomed, as the purpose of the Department is to secure as complete information as possible of the factors contributing to 'freezing', since this must be the first step to an intelligent attempt to remedy or prevent its occurrence, if such can be done. It is possible, too, that the cause or causes of freezing may not be the same in all cases, but whether this be so or not will have to be determined later as new information comes to hand. Introduction One of the worries which must constantly confront the operators of gas-naphtha producing wells in Turner Valley-although all, fortunately, have not met with it-is the possibility of the occurrence of what is commonly called 'freezing' (going off production).

The mine of the Molybdenum Corporation of America is in the Red River mining dis¬trict, Taos County, northern New Mexico (fig. 1), The mill and camp are in the valley of Red River, about 7 miles east of the town of Questa; the mine is 1 ¼ miles away, in Sulphur Gulch, a tributary of Red River. The mine is about 600 feet higher than the mill, at an altitude of about 8,700 feet. The climate is cold in winter, but does not interfere serious¬ly with continuous operation. The mine normally produces about 40 tons of sulphide molybde¬num ore per day, which is concentrated at the local mill and chipped to the plant of the Molybdenum Corporation at Washington, Pa.; there it is made into either ferromelybdenum or "molyte" (calcium molybdate), for use in alloys. The ore is mined from narrow, irregular veins by the cut-and-fill method. About 65 men are normally employed underground and on the surface at the mine.

At the Annual Western Meeting held at Blairmore, Alta., October 1924, the writer presented a paper drawing attention -to the advantages of portable gas-driven equipment for developing isolated mining properties. This type of equipment was at that time practically in its infancy and the details of results actually accomplished were somewhat meagre. During the last year or so a number of these plants have been installed so that it is now possible to offer more definite information regarding the actual mining progress accomplished with such plants and their cost of operation in various parts of the country. This paper has been written with the idea of reviewing the work done during the past year, and to supply data which may be of interest to those wh9 are confronted with the problem of selecting equipment for development or assessment work. Because drilling operations play such an important part in mining, one of the first problems that usually confront the prospective? mine owner is the selection of the proper com-pressed-air plant. The size and type of equipment and the method of driving it require careful consideration. The size and type of equipment is determined largely by the funds available, transportation facilities, and the speed with which the programme of development is to be carried out. The selection of the proper method of drive usually depends on local conditions, such as the relative cost of various fuels, and has an important bearing on operating costs.
