This is one of a series of information circulars describing mining and milling methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Summitville Consolidated Mines, Inc., is the only company now active at Summitville. Since the holdings of the company include those of most of the former producers of the camp, the paper virtually becomes a description of the Summitville district. The field data were collected from August 23 to 28, 1937. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The writer gratefully acknowledges his indebtedness to H. F. Detrick, president, and Edward Thornton, general manager of the company for their cooperation in making this paper possible. Most contemporary mines have considerable amounts of data. Structured and unstructured large data sets are colloquially named big data. Much of the data in mining operations come from a variety of systems, each with different databases and reporting environments. Standard technology deployments create a Bsilo-ification^ of data leading to poor system benefit. Through modern server monitoring and systematic approach, data utilization and value can quantifiably be measured. The Data Utilization and Value Index (DUVI) can quantify business intelligence best practices and user interaction. This study seeks to provide a data management tool to measure data utilization across the process of converting data into action.

The appropriate design of liners continues to be an issue on many mills worldwide. Loss of milling capacity especially at liner change, uneven wear lives along the mill, substantial scrap on worn liners, excess mill down-time, undesirably short and unreliable wear lives are all common issues. This paper presents a designed approach to liner optimisation that follows a logical path of initial design and step-wise improvements based on liner wear monitoring. The target is to have a good liner design from start-up, then tune the profiles, heights and thicknesses based on wear monitoring. This is conducted as a team of liner specialist, site personnel and liner supplier. The application to the Pustynnoye SAG mill of JSC Altynalmas in Kazakhstan is presented. IN reviewing the design of the ore haulage system for the Morenci project, the reader should bear in mind that the railroad and its equpiment cannot be considered as an independent railroad provided only for the purpose of transporting ore from one point to another, but as an integral part of the operation which begins at the electric shovels loading ore at the mine, and ends where the ore, after having been crushed in the primary crushing plant, is deposited in the bins at the secondary crushing plant. Obviously then, the problem consisted of designing a system that would function to the best possible advantage in complete co-ordination with the other units.

In January 1980, the Bureau of Mines initiated an experimental program to examine the fire and explosion hazards of one-hour self-contained self rescuers (SSRs). This action was prompted by a growing concern on the part of government and industrial safety officials over the potential hazards of these devices when deployed on a large scale in underground coal mines. Prior evaluation of the safety of these devices had been at best sporadic and usually limited to experimental models. The recent availability of preproduction models of a l-hour SSR fabricated by the Mine Safety Appliance Company* and a production model manufactured by Dragerwerk Ag Lubeck of the Federal Republic of Germany allowed for a more comprehensive and meaningful evaluation of their safety in underground coal mines. This report summarizes the results of a 5-month study of the potential hazards of these two items. During the course of the work, periodic progress reports were presented to officials of the Mine Safety and Health Administration and various mining organizations including the American Mining Congress, Bituminous Coal Operators of America. National Independent Coal Operators Association, and the United Mine Workers of America. The free exchange of ideas that occurred during these meetings had a significant impact on the direction of this study and a serious attempt was made to address all of the issues that were raised at these meetings. The authors are extremely grateful to the individuals that participated in defining the specific problems that could arise as a result of deploying the self-contained self rescuers in an underground coal mine environment.

The Helen Mine, of the Algoma Steel Corporation, in the Michipicoten district, Ontario, Canada, has produced more than 6,240,290 tons of iron ore. Prior to and during World War I, 2,823,369 gross tons of brown ore were shipped, and from 1939 to the end of the 1944 season, 3,416,921 gross tons of siderite ore were produced from open-pit operations. Brief descriptions are given of the nature of the ore, the mining methods employed and the manner of treatment of the ore. Shipment of the finished product, known as Algoma sinter, is made to blast furnaces in both Canada and the United States. The iron-ore bodies—i.e., the oxide ores of the Old Helen and the siderite of the New Helen—are a part of a tabular shaped area of iron formation that extends over a length of more than 100,000 ft. and has a maximum width of 1000 ft. The ores are considered to be a product of introduction of iron-bearing material accompanied by replacement of the rocks already present. It is shown that introduction took place subsequent to the development of the major folded structures. It is believed the iron-bearing material emanated from an igneous source. Introduction The Michipicoten mining district derives its name from the Indian word1 meaning "place of bold promontories" or "region of big places," and anyone who has visited this part of Canada will agree that the district is well named. In 1897, there was active prospecting for gold in the district and the Ontario Bureau of Mines2 opened a recording office at the Hudson's Bay post at Michipicoten River. In the summer of 1897, Ben Boyer, probably searching for gold, discovered an outcrop of brown iron ore at the east end of a small lake, less than 8 miles, in an air line, northeast of the nearest point on Michipicoten Harbour. In the following year, extensive surface exploration and diamond drilling disclosed a commercial body of nonbessemer brown ore, possibly 700 ft. long and 200 ft. wide, of about the following analysis:3 Fe (natural), 57.15 per cent; S, dried at 212°F.. 0.113; SiO2, dried at 212°F., 4.00; P, dried at 212°F., 0.125. The property (Figs. 1-3) was taken over by E. V. Clergue and ultimately was transferred to the Algoma Steel Corporation. The Algoma Central Railway shortly afterward built its line from Michipicoten Harbour to the mine, together with an ore dock at the Harbour. Thus, within three years of its discovery, the mine had adequate shipping facilities and a market for its ore. In an effort to reduce the risks to underground miners of health hazards associated with exposure to high concentrations of diesel particulate matter(dpm), the Mine Safety and Health Administration(MSHA) published proposed rules in 1998 limiting dpm exposure in both underground coal and metal and nonmetal mines. The proposed rule for underground coal mines would require removal of 95% of dpm by mass, while the rule for metal and nonmetal mines would eventually limit total carbon exposure from dpm to 160 micrograms per cubic meter of air over an eight-hour shift. The comment period for both proposed standards ended on July 26, 1999.In this session, representatives from MSHA, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), equipment manufacturers, labor and industry will discuss the impact of the proposed regulations on mine operations and worker health. Questions will be taken from the audience after brief presentations from each panelist. This paper provides a compilation of written summaries of each panelist’s opening presentation.

Among the many engineering problems directly related to conservation in the petroleum industry, that of crude-oil emulsions continues to be important. Emulsions of water and oil always have constituted one of the most serious forms of waste in the oil fields, and the necessity of dehydrating emulsified crude petroleum to obtain marketable or pipe-line oil confronts operators in many fields with a major operating problem. In 1926 the Bureau of Mines published a comprehensive treatise s on oil-field emulsions dealing with field conditions, practical methods of dehydration, and physicochemical characteristics of the formation and resolution of emulsions. Although this bulletin is still available and may be obtained from the Superintendent of Documents, Washington, D. C., and although its contents are a valuable reference on the subject of emulsions, knowledge regarding the physical properties of emulsions and the phenomena of dehydration has increased greatly within the last decade. With the information gained through continued scientific research, substantial improvements have been made in the art of resolving petroleum emulsions. Moreover, in recent years there has been a growing realization of the importance of emulsion-preventive measures that has led to more critical examination of the causes of emulsions and methods of eliminating or at least reducing the degree of emulsification. Conditions causing agitation and commingling of oil and water and the formation of "cut oil" often are within the control of the producer, thereby making it possible to utilize preventive or remedial measures by which emulsification may be minimized or avoided. In fact, many companies have materially reduced their treating costs as a result of careful studies in emulsion prevention and proper handling of "wet" production. Of course, in many instances preventive measures or the correction of conditions causing emulsification cannot be achieved practically or economically, and the emulsions that form must be treated regardless of the care exercised or the money spent in attempting to prevent their formation.

"Self-drilling rock bolts (SDRBs) that use pumpable cement grout to anchor bolts have been used successfully in the tunnelling and civil engineering industries for many years. Pumpable cement grout offers a considerable advantage in that the SDRB can be fully encapsulated right down to the bearing plate, including filling cracks and cavities in the borehole. However, cement grout cannot provide the immediate rock support required for the coal industry. This paper describes a new SDRB system that uses pumpable resin to anchor the SDRB in a borehole, which not only provides all the advantages of a pumpable grout anchoring system, but also provides immediate roof and rib support as required in the coal industry. This paper further outlines the latest developments in SDRB technology including (1) extendable self-drilling rock bolts, which can almost double in length during the installation process and are particularly suited to low seam heights and rib support and (2) pre-tensioned SDRBs, where a pre-tensioned load can be applied during the installation process. These new SDRB systems offer both considerable advantages in rock support and improvements in mining productivity.INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry is continually striving to develop more efficient methods to support the roof and walls of roadways and tunnels, and rock bolting has proven to be one of the most significant improvements in ground support over the last 50 years. Rock bolting is now almost universally used in the underground mining industry worldwide, and there are many different rock bolts available.Rock bolts are traditionally made from steel or fiberglass and are anchored into a borehole with a friction-anchoring device, such as an expansion shell mechanism; cement grout; or chemical resin. Friction-anchored bolts are widely used in the Australian metal mining industry, predominantly as short-term support. They are used in conjunction with resin-anchored bolts where there is a requirement for longer life. Resin-anchored bolts are used in the coal mining industry.Friction-anchored bolts provide immediate rock support, but their load transfer capacity is poor compared to resin or cement anchored bolts. In addition, friction-anchored bolts are more susceptible to corrosion than resin or cement anchored bolts."

Rio Tinto is committed to proactive mineral waste and acid rock drainage management. Corporate requirements are closely aligned with the GARD Guide principles of early geochemical characterization and prediction followed by selection and implementation of management strategies to prevent or minimize ARD. Each operation is required to design and implement an ARD and Mineral Waste Management Plan. Successful implementation of the plan requires commitment at all levels of the company, from senior management, to geologists, mine planners, environmental staff and equipment operators. Examples of the successful integration of ARD management strategies into mine operations are cited from several mines.

In the past, Westmoreland County together with Fayette County produced about one-third of the bituminous coal mined in Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh bed in Westmoreland County has furnished enormous quantities of coal to the by-product and beehive ovens, gas-manufacturing plants, and general industrial manufacturers over a wide area until about 20 years ago. Little attention was paid to the thinner beds because of the superior quality of the Pittsburgh. The approaching exhaustion of Pittsburgh coal will require accelerated-exploitation of these coals if Westmoreland County is to continue as an important source of bituminous coal, Much of the Pittsburgh coal in Westmoreland County is low-sulfur and requires no mechanical cleaning for the preparation of a metallurgical fuel. Even those areas where the sulfur percentage increased to a maximum of about 2 percent, a relatively easy washing operation usually produced a cleaned coal, which found ready acceptance by the coke industry. Davis reported the remaining recoverable reserves of the .Pittsburgh bed in Westmoreland County to be 255,439,000 tons as of January 1, 1937. Since that date, more than 100,000,000 tons of Pittsburgh coal has been extracted so that the time is not too distant when this important coal bed will be depleted. A study of the Pittsburgh bed in Westmoreland -County has not been made a part of this report as the remaining reserves of the coal can be used in coke making with a, minimum of preparation. The production from the Upper 'Freeport bed will increase as the supply of coal from the Pittsburgh bed diminishes, and as of the present time it supplies a substantial proportion of the county's coal output.

Present and emerging technologies are renewing interest in domestic rare earth elements (REE) production. REE deposits throughout the North American Cordilleran alkaline-igneous belt are being re-examined for their economic potential. In New Mexico, the mineral deposits found in this belt are associated with Eocene–Oligocene alkaline to calc-alkaline igneous rocks. Four areas in New Mexico have been examined for their REE potential. The chondrite-normalized REE patterns are similar for all four districts, even though different REE minerals are found. Crandallite, xenotime, bastnäsite and brookite are found in fluorite veins and carbonatites at Laughlin Peak. Bastnäsite was extracted during fluorite processing from 1954-1980 from the Gallinas Mountains, where samples as high as 8% total REE are found in fluorite veins. Other REE minerals include agardite, parasite, xenotime, and monazite. Allanite, thorite and as much as 8133 ppm total REE are found in fluorite veins in the Capitan Mountains. In the Cornudas Mountains, exploration along the outer edge of the Wind Mountain nepheline syenite laccolith and within phonolite dikes, plugs, skarns and carbonate-replacement deposits in Chess Draw contain as much as 3110 ppm TREE, hosted in eudialyte, monazite, bastnäsite, and calciocatapleiite.

Highly energy-intensive systems prone to wastage are significant causes of unnecessary energy losses in industry. Deep-level mine chilled water reticulation systems fall within this category of inefficient energy-intensive systems. Some techniques (measured baselining, zero-waste baselining, leak detection, and control valves) exist to identify and reduce wastage in mine water reticulation systems. However, these techniques have not been compared, which begs the question of which is more accurate. A need, therefore, exists to compare these methods to determine the effectiveness of each. This study investigates each method and applies them to a case study mine, providing a platform for comparison. These methods identified wastage ranging between 2 and 20 l/s (3–30% of water consumption). The comparative effectiveness of the methods from best to worst was found to be zero-waste baselining, leak detection, control valves, then measure baselining. This study proposes an application procedure combining the considered methods to identify and eliminate wastage on deep-level mine systems more efficiently.

The flotation mechanism plays a key role in the flotation process. It is used to provide the contact between solid particles and bubbles and also the energy for these particles and bubbles to attach. The mechanism must therefore provide sufficient mixing to keep the solids in suspension so that they can be transported into the froth and recovered to the concentrate. The design of the mechanism is critical and over the past decade Outotec has developed and optimised a new mechanism design to improve metallurgical and energy performance. The FloatForce® mechanism consists of a rotor and stator arrangement and has been specifically designed to provide sustained mixing at higher air flows and lower power inputs.Over 500 FloatForce® mechanisms have been installed in existing and new operations. This paper outlines the technological aspects of the FloatForce® mechanism and provides metallurgical, operational and energy performance results from a number of flotation circuits in which these have been installed.

A conviction is growing that depressions and other adverse conditions are not entirely unavoidable if a knowledge of past achievements and shortcomings is intelligently, applied in shaping the course of industry. Mineral producers have available a source of such knowledge concerning; their industry in the statistical records of the United States Bureau of Mines, and by scanning, this increasingly exact history can obtain information on which to found a more stable future. This paper contains a brief history, covering more than 50 years, of the activities of the nonmetallic mineral industries as a group, followed by short histories of each of the more important commodities in which are noted the circumstances that lave influenced their development.

A custom-designed shotcrete system, consisting of an 8-m3 (10-yd3) transit mixer and a shotcrete spray boom carrier, is used bya 2-man crew to transport and place up to 25 m3 (32 yd3) of steel-fiber reinforced, dry, silica fume shotcrete per II-hour shift. Shotcrete is custom blended by a local supplier and delivered predampened. Mix design and quality control is performed with a computer program that develops and graphs a properly balanced mix based upon the materials sieve analyses.

Applications are described of various methods for determining the weight concentration and physical properties of solid and liquid impurities of gases in connection with problems encountered in synthesis-gas production. Of special interest among these methods may be listed: 1. A method developed for determining, the weight concentration of solid and liquid impurities in. hot, crude synthesis gas containing a high concentration of moisture. 2. A method developed for the same purpose but for highly purified synthesis gas or atmospheric air. 3. A method for obtaining a uniform dispersion of dry duet or, a microscope slide for particle-size determination or other purposes.

ON THE occasion of the eightieth birthday of Captain Robert W. Hunt, the Iron and Steel Committee of the Institute, desiring to commemorate the great contributions made to the steel industry by Captain Hunt during his long career, conceived the idea of a Hunt Medal to be awarded annually by the Institute for meritorious contributions to the art of making steel. The project was received enthusiastically by all to whom it was proposed, especially by Captain Hunt's partners and employees who considered it their right, and asked for the privilege of -. - raising the necessary funds within their own circle. This was agreed to, and the Institute has received from them $7500 as an endowment fund to provide an annual award, and $1000 for the expenses of providing of medal.
