Despite the media's use of the mining industry as a whipping boy over its perceived attitude towards the environment, the facts remain that the only legislated requirement in the SA Statute Books for any form of environmental impact-assessment prior to development is to be found in the Minerals Act in the form of an EMPR. Not only is our industry complying with this requirement, but moves are afoot to set up environmental management systems for existing operations in preparation for seeking accreditation under ISO 14001 when published towards the end of this year. On how broad a front are we advancing? ? Is the industry equipped to handle these challenges? ? Does it have the determination to overcome its problems? ? Do we realise that failure may mean the loss of markets overseas to competitors who can meet the international standards? ? Where are the shortcomings and when must our efforts be focussed?

IT is difficult to judge how much influence the success attained during its first year, 1864-65, by the School of Mines at Columbia had on developments in education for the mineral industry elsewhere in the immediately subsequent years. The facts are as follows: 1. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology began giving instruction in February 1865, with a mining course included in its curriculum. 2. Early in 1865 the faculty of the Department of Science, Literature and the Arts of the University of Michigan requested permission from the Regents to establish "a course of study to be called the School of Mines . . . Also that the degree of Mining Engineering, be conferred on students who should complete the course of study prescribed in the same." A resolution authorizing this was adopted by the Regents on March 28, 1865. 3. Samuel Hooper endowed a Sturgis-Hooper professorship of geology at Harvard in 1865 with the intention of making it a nucleus of a new School of Practical Mining and Geology. 4. Yale appointed Alfred P. Rockwell professor of mining in 1865. 5. Lafayette College appointed Henry S. Osborn professor of mining and metallurgy in 1865. 6. Washington College (as Washington and Lee was then known), rising out of the ashes of Civil War destruction, made a fresh start in 1865, with Generalized as its president, and offered a mining course in the first catalogue thereafter published. 7. Lehigh University, founded in 1866, had a mining curriculum from its beginning. 8. Rensselaer Polytechnic began offering a curriculum in mining and metallurgical engineering in 1867. Este conjunto de contrações determina o Fator de Contração de operação, o qual é utilizado para determinar as dimensões do molde que irão resultar na largura especificada, onde o presente estudo determinará o fator de contração dos aços peritéticos. As variáveis identificadas que influenciam no fluxo de calor primário foram: frequência de oscilação, superaquecimento, velocidade de lingotamento e viscosidade do pó fluxante. Identificou-se que o resfriamento secundário e a conicidade utilizado no molde, também são critérios determinantes para obtenção de larguras especificadas. Assim sendo, uma equação de regressão foi desenvolvida para o Fator de Contração.

This paper on methods and costs of mining at the Westside mine, in the Tri-State zinc-and lead-mining district (Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma), is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. Methods and equipment used in drilling, loading, and underground transportation have changed radically since the latest Bureau of Mines publications2/ on mining methods in the district were published more than 20 years ago. More efficient methods and machines have been developed in order to maintain low operating costs in the face of rising labor and supply costs and lower grade ore. The rate of conversion to mine mechanization was disappointing at times; local conditions required the development of special equipment, and available rock-moving machines had to be remodeled and strengthened.

En este sentido, el presente trabajo describe el origen de los depósitos a partir de los descubrimientos de módulos manganíferos en el océano pacífico que hicieron Thompson y Murray. Posteriormente Buchanam demuestra la existencia de módulos ferro-manganíferos en aguas poco profundas ( 200 m. ), de composición diferente de las provenientes de aguas profundas. De otro lado, el trabajo señala también la división de los minerales marinos en tres categorías: las sales disueltas y en organismos, los sedimentos y depósitos en el suelo profundo submarino y los depósitos consolidados e inconsolidados de la plataforma continental. Por último, se describe los procesos de beneficio y las ventajas de la explotación de los recursos submarinos en el futuro de la minería submarina.

Studies have been made of interfacial turbulence occurring in reactions in which indium, zinc and cadmium, dissolved in amalgams, are oxidised into aqueous phases by ferric or mercurous ions. It has been found that this turbulence occurs when the concentrations of oxidising ions in the aqueous phase become sufficiently great. These concentrations are the same as those at which the mass-transfer coefficients in the aqueous phase increase sharply when both phases are stirred by gas bubbles rising through them. The effects of gas flow rate on the mass-transfer coefficients for zinc in mercury have been established, and the oxidation of pure mercury has been investigated. Efficiency demands that mine geologists devote the most time to tasks where they can have the biggest effect on production. One of the most time-consuming tasks is geological interpretation of the orebody and turning this into a block model for the planning engineers.The current best practice for mines that require a geologically constrained resource model involves capturing the interpretation of geologists as three-dimensional (3D) wireframes. However, there is significant overhead in the production of valid wireframes from sectional and plan interpretations. This overhead consists of the mundane tasks of digitising polylines, then building 3D wireframes and validating them. While software can simplify this task, the current process is not the best use of a geologist’s time. Under time pressure exerted by planning engineers and the time required for modelling from polylines, geologists are forced to roll-up the presence of other elements or impurities into the interpretation and encode them in the polylines, even though it is often desirable to consider these other factors separately.While it might seem unlikely that mine geologists can produce constrained geological models without the intermediary of wireframes, the technology to accomplish this is getting closer.In this paper, the results of a trial at the Savage River magnetite mine, which is owned and operated by Grange Resources Ltd, are reported. The trial was for a ‘direct-to-block’ implicit geological modelling method. The focus was on creating a geological attributed block model from drill hole geological log data; resource estimates were not determined. The categories modelled were air, waste, low-grade ore, medium-grade ore, and high-grade ore. The block model outputs either resulted in a proportional block model (categories expressed as percentages within equivolumetric blocks) or a sub-blocked model (parent block and one sub-block), which is the preferred block model output at the Savage River mine. When compared to the traditional best practice modelling method, which takes 43 work days, the wireframe-free modelling method took only 26 hours from initial modelling, using both exploration and grade control data. An update using appended drill hole data is achievable within one day. These results represent time savings of more than one order of magnitude compared to the traditional workflow, and, as such, these figures merit serious consideration for the use of the direct-to-block modelling approach at other operations.With these time savings, geological and estimation models can be kept updated constantly; geologists will not need to set aside two months for quarterly or half-yearly modelling of the drill hole data for resource review. Such dramatic time savings will allow for the better use of highly skilled geologists, who are in short supply in the current market, and will also impact directly on downstream mining engineering workflows.

THE Falcon Lake stock is a small igneous mass, 2.6 square miles in area, which has intruded a belt of older lavas and metamorphosed sediments. It is well exposed and the entire area of its outcrop is taken up with surveyed mining claims, the claim lines forming a grid which makes ideal conditions for a detailed petrographical study of the unusual variations which are found in the composition of this unit (see Figure 1). The study of this mass, which has revealed features of both scientific and economic significance, began in the summer of 1939 when trainees in a Prospectors' Training Camp, a Do-minion-Provincial youth-training project under the writer's supervision, were, detailed to map rock outcrops on various mining claims. Microscopic study of rock specimens taken on a line across this stock were made during the following winter and proved to be of such interest that a special trip was made the following summer for the purpose of gathering more data, the results of which are presented here. Location The stock is close to the southeast corner of the province of Manitoba, about three miles from the Ontario boundary. It lies between Falcon and West Hawk lakes and less than a mile south of the Trans-Canada highway. It is easily accessible by motor car, as a branch road from the highway leads to the Sunbeam Kirkland gold mine, which is within the inner core of the stock. Previous Work This area was the first in the Province to receive attention from prospectors, who entered it from the adjacent Lake of the Woods district during the days of the mining boom in the 1890's. Small occurrences of gold, copper, molybdenum, and tungsten ores were found, but to date there has been no production from the district, except for small shipments of gold ore. The regional geology has been mapped by the Manitoba Department of Mines and Natural Resources, the Falcon Lake stock being shown and recorded as of "varying composition". The more detailed work involved in preparing the accompanying map has necessitated only minor changes in the outline as previously mapped.

Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama with the cooperation of the different coal operators On the basis of the float-and-sink data, an attempt has been made to determine approximately the extent of ash and sulphur reduction obtainable under given conditions on coal from the mines which were sampled, In the coal-producing districts of Alabama a great deaf of attention has been given in recent years to the problem of improving preparation methods so as to obtain from various coal beds the best possible grade of washed coal. This is especially so where the washed coal is used for the making of metallurgical coke in by-product plants or where there are possibilities of using the coal for this purpose. In the manufacture of metallurgical coke, the sulphur content of the coal is a very important consideration. It is quite often the determining factor as to whether or not a certain coal can be used for coke making. In the studies which form the basis for this report, all samples have been analyzed for sulphur in order to obtain information regarding the possibilities of sulphur elimination as well as ash reduction, and the samples on which reports are made were obtained from beds that are characterized by rather high percentages of sulphur. In connection with the present investigations of coal preparation in Alabama a standardized method of interpreting float-and-sink data has been used extensively for predicting the ash and sulphur reduction and yields obtainable in a commercial washing plant from various sizes of raw coal and from the raw coal as a whole after a certain degree of crushing. This method, which will be explained in subsequent chapters, was used in interpreting the data contained in this report. The samples used for these washability studies were obtained from the following mines in the Warrior field of Alabama: Beltona mine on the Jefferson bed; Dolomite and Mulga mines on the Pratt bed; Coal Valley No. 163 and Coal Valley No. 11 mines on the Corona bed; Cedar Cove mine on the Carter bed.

Appalachia is an increasing concern, as unnaturally high TDS and/or associated specific conductivity (SC) may contribute to deteriorated stream ecosystem health. The aim of this preliminary study was to explore the efficacy of accelerated leaching as a means of minimizing long-term TDS/SC generation by problematic overburden materials. Five spoil samples were collected and leached using simulated rainwater solutions under ambient and acidified pH conditions. SC and pH were monitored during each leach cycle, and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) was used to determine how leaching conditions affected the release of specific ions. This paper highlights the results of both jar and column leaching tests. Among the most significant findings was that for certain spoil materials, the SC in the leach column effluent was effectively reduced when the spoil was first leached with acidic rainwater followed by ambient rainwater, as opposed to leaching with ambient rainwater alone. This suggests that accelerated leaching might aid in the long-term stabilization of some materials.

This presentation covers the results of laboratory studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines Mineral Dressing Section, Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg., on alluvial sands from Dismal Swamp, Bear Valley, and Cascade, Idaho. The search for radioactive minerals has led to the reexamination of alluvial deposits; in the process of this reappraisal the frequent presence of minerals bearing columbium and/or tantalum was toted. Because of increased demand for these metals by the defense industries and because these industries depend upon foreign sources for their supply the domestic alluvial black sands are being considered, as a possible domestic source. However, utilization of these alluvial deposits depends upon development of methods of concentrating these valuable minerals. The primary objective of the test work was the study of the effect of attrition scrubbing, sizing, magnetic, electrostatic, and gravity separa¬tion as methods for concentrating and recovering the columbium and tantalum-bearing minerals, samarskite, euxenite, ilmenorutile, and columbite.

(Hons.) in chemistry (1949) from the University of the Witwatersrand. Mr G. C. Thompson matriculated at Dale College in 1951. He then attended the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.8c. (Min. Eng.) in 1959. Mr P. T. Fewell was born and educated in the United Kingdom. After obtaining the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) in 1958 at Sheffield University, he emigrated to South Africa. DtP. R. Jochens, Pr. Eng., has been a member of Council since 1974, serving as President in 1980-1981.

This circular presents a summary of the domestic chromium industry, and discusses the salient features of the world situation , reflecting the literature of the subject . The United States Bureau of Mines has in its files additional detailed information on many subjects briefly discussed in this paper and desires to assist the industries and the public by giving further data in response to individual inquiries . It will welcome comment and criticism and any contributions that would assist in making future editions of this circular more accurate . Unlike most common metals , chromium is rarely marketed as a pure metal . The chromium industry deals mainly with chromite , the principal ore of chromium , and with ferrochromium , the basic alloy in which chromium enters the metallurgical industry.

Section 15 covers a loose collection of topics that involve water in some way. The chapters in this section include Dredge and Placer Mining (Chapter 15.1), Solution Mining: Surface Techniques (Chapter 15.2), and Solution Mining: In Situ Techniques (Chapter 15.3). The dredge and placer systems involve water in several forms. The segment on hydraulicking or hydrosluicing discusses the use of monitors to direct high-pressure water jets to move material. As such, this represents an alternative to mechanical breakage, loading, and hauling. This chapter also covers placer mining (except dry placering) where the water provides the medium that promotes the separation of minerals based on their density and other settling characteristics. Thus placer mining is generally limited to concentration of gold, tin ore, diamonds, and other heavy minerals that are already liberated and are contained in a less dense matrix. The third topic, straight forward dredging, as in sand and gravel operations, involves water only in an incidental way. Here water simply covers the minerals of interest. Thus the dredging system need only lift a payload from the submerged location to the surface for further processing or handling

The key is people creating, aligning on, and subsequently enacting the future of mining. A methodology that is effective creates a corporate environment for alignment to be possible and then transforms operations by embedding the necessary behaviors, processes and practices. The people within the organization then are empowered to find and to implement solutions quickly, as measured business results demonstrate in case histories of diverse mining challenges around the globe and over the decades.Urgent case for actionThe physics of mining does not change fundamentally over time, but the context in which it operates changes rapidly, periodically requiring a new face of mining. “The New Face of Mining,” which has been used as a metaphor for the campus-wide mineral resources research organization at the University of Arizona, has many facets, including societal, generational, technological, financial and environmental, but at the center, always, is humanity. The New Face of Mining is not necessarily about age, it is about people first imagining and then creating a new future for mining. The challenges facing the global industry evolve from year to year and differ in individual companies or mines at any one time.Quantified outcomes from case studies indicate that a methodology, now also offered annually in a four-day, open-enrollment leadership program tailored to the mining industry, is effective at generating breakthrough results in the mining business. Such challenges range from those with important technical components to others that are mostly social challenges. Our focus, however, is the centrality of people in aligning on and enacting the future of mining. We use the phrase New Face of Mining for leadership and ways to empower people in organizations that commonly are overlooked in the mining industry. Some of the material in this article is based on the ideas of Werner Erhard and on the book by Steve Zaffron and Dave Logan (2009), The Three Laws of Performance: Rewriting the Future of Your Organization and Your Life.At Davos, Switzerland in January 1992, nine visionary mining chief executive officers (CEO) gathered to create the Global Mining Initiative. Much has changed in the 26 years since that meeting:• The world GDP has increased from US$25.4 trillion to $75.8 trillion.• The annual number of U.S. patent applications increased from 186,000 to 629,000.• The number of websites has increased from 100 to 1 billion.• The number of academic references to artificial intelligence has climbed from more than 16,000 to more than 1 million.• The number of cell phone subscribers grew from 11 million in the United States to four billion globally."

This report describes a program to evaluate the feasibility of determining roof features which occur in United States coal mines from changes in bolting machine drilling parameters. The ultimate purpose of this effort is the development of an instrumented roof bolting machine which can detect hazardous roof conditions and/or indicate when the existing roof control plan is inadequate. A survey of hazardous conditions occurring in United States coal mines is included, along with the slang expressions for these conditions, and their relative degree of hazard. Specific machine parameters are identified for detecting the specific roof conditions. Measurement concepts are proposed using readily available instrumentation in most cases. Various systems are evaluated and tradeoffs presented. An implementation plan is proposed for developing a prototype system and using it in an operating coal mine.

During the year 1945, the drilling pace in West Texas increased above that in the year 1944, and represented the highest number of well completions since 2941. The 1680 new wells drilled 8,287,958 ft. of hole for a per well average of 4933 ft. This depth is approximately 30o. ft. deeper than the average for the year 1944. Although the deepest well drilled in West Texas (Phillips Petroleum Company's Ada Price No. 1, in Pecos County) was completed during the year. 1944 to a depth of 15,279 ft. and tested the Ellen-burger horizon, the producing depth record for West Texas was set during the year 1945 with the completion of Amerada Petroleum Corporation's Jones No. I-A, in the Jones Ranch field, Gaines County, which now is producing at 11,422 ft. from the Devonian formation.
