During fiscal year 1966 the Bureau of Mines published 99 scientific and technical papers and engaged in 67 research projects on petroleum, natural gas, and oil shale. A basic appropriation of $3.4 million was supplemented by $1 million in cooperative funds from other Governmental agencies and industry groups. Petroleum conservation was advanced by development of scientific knowledge and improvement of technologic methods in both the extraction and utilization of petroleum, natural gas, and oil shale. Experimental work was carried out at research centers in Bartlesville, Okla., and Laramie, Wo., and in laboratories in Morgantown, W. Va., and San Francisco, Calif. ACHIEVEMENTS IN FISCAL YEAR 1966 Bureau of Mines--Petroleum Research in fiscal year 1966 (July 1, 1965- June 30, 1966) was involved in many public issues--air pollution, peaceful uses of nuclear explosives, utilization of oil-shale resources, computerization of recovery-stimulation techniques, and fuels for supersonic airplanes. Scientific contributions included compositional studies of petroleum and oil shale, determination of thermodynamic properties of petroleum compounds, development of analytical techniques, and correlations of petroleum properties with geologic occurrence. Technologic advances included rock-fracturing research, in situ combustion studies, waterflood techniques, use of radio-tracers to study stability of petroleum fuels, and hydrogenation as a tool to prepare shale-oil products.

About 15,000 tonnes of zinc per year is present in the dusts and fumes produced in electric arc and BOS steelmaking, secondary copper refining and brass ingot making. Apart from the use of some copper-smelter fumes for zinc chemicals manufacture, zinc is not recovered and their disposal by landfill entails some risk of pollution by leach-out. The paper describes processes for recovering the zinc based on leaching and electrowinning. It was shown that the procedures normally employed for purifying zinc-electrolytes derived from primary sources are sometimes ineffective for secondary materials. Alternative process routes are proposed. Source materials were leached with acidic or alkaline reagents and solvent extraction was employed for electrolyte purification in addition to the usual techniques involving precipitation. Examples of integrated flow sheets for specific source materials are presented.

Global Geoscience is developing a Rhyolite Ridge project, a shallow boron-lithium resource deposit, located in Nevada about 25 km from Albermarle’s Silver Peak operation. The main minerals of interest are the boron mineral searlesite (40%wt) and lithium containing clay minerals. These minerals are found among principally calcite, feldspar, muscovite, dolomite, and quartz. The equivalent commercial value is about 7–9% boric acid (H3BO3) and 0.8–1.0% lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) equivalents. Selective agitated leach tests at SGS Lakefield laboratory showed that searlesite can be acid leached between 20 and 75 °C and at a pH lower than 4. On the other hand, lithium can be leached between 20 and 75 °C and at a pH lower than 1. In other words, lithium can be recovered at low temperatures if sufficient free acid is available, which gave the motivation to investigate heap leaching of the mineral. The PLS contains boric acid, magnesium, sodium, lithium, potassium aluminium, and iron sulfates.

Modern mining companies are increasingly turning to integrate digital technologies and circular economy (CE) principles to increase the sustainability of their operations. The so-called “mine of the future” is envisioned as a smart, integrated system where technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence, digital twins, and real-time data analytics work in harmony with human decision-making and environmental responsibility. Already in 2018, McKinsey and Co. identified that the three drivers that would define a technology-enabled change in mining would be technology, including digital, analytics and automation, management systems able to identify the potential and value of the new technologies, and the culture and capabilities of the organisation, leaning to more agile and responsive organisations. From the three drivers, in the last five years most developments have been centred in the first one. Yet despite rapid advances, the adoption of new technologies across the industry today remains uneven and often slower than expected. Furthermore, it has been identified that the problem on the technology uptake often relay on the lack of operational readiness, process incompatibility or misalignment, and resistance to change within the mining operation. At the same time, leading companies like Rio Tinto, BHP, and Anglo American have each launched major digital transformation programs. Rio Tinto, for instance, operates one of the world’s largest autonomous mining fleets and has integrated digital technologies across nearly all its operations (Rio Tinto, 2025). BHP is actively investing in information and communication technology (ICT) development as artificial intelligence, big data analytics and robotics, and has partnered with battery companies to pursue circular economy initiatives. Only in 2024, their ICT spending reached US$ 438.3 million (Global Data, 2024). Anglo American has rolled out its FutureSmart Mining™ framework, explicitly aligning innovation with circularity and sustainability goals (Anglo American, 2025). The accelerating pace of change across leading mining companies along with the uneven adoption in the technology uptake clearly state how digital transformation is no longer just about implementing new tools, instead it requires a fundamental shift in how people, processes, and culture are aligned. Addressing only the technical layer, while neglecting the human and organizational dimensions, leaves transformation efforts fragile and unsustainable. As the industry must act decisively to close this gap, the true test of transformation is today centred in changing behaviours, mindsets, and systems. Even at the listed leading companies, initiatives have encountered cultural and structural resistance that are relatable to the industry in large: siloed departments fail to collaborate, procurement teams focus on upfront costs rather than lifecycle value, and operators are often excluded from early-stage planning, reducing buy-in. In many cases, a lack of communication or failure to link technology to real operational bottlenecks leads to disengagement at the ground level. This friction reveals a broader issue: mining organizations have historically treated technology and culture as separate domains, when in fact they are deeply interdependent. To address this, the authors propose a systems engineering approach focusing on the mining operations as a complex socio-technical system composed of people, processes, and technologies. Systems engineering offers tools and frameworks for mapping interactions, aligning incentives, designing for feedback and adaptation, and integrating change across organizational boundaries. Specifically, besides technical requirements, it demands treating culture not as an afterthought or side-effect, but as a design variable that must be intentionally shaped alongside infrastructure and workflows. This paper explores how this approach can be applied in practice, by analysing a real-world case scenario where resistance to innovation was overcome not by technical capabilities alone, but through alignment of stakeholder incentives, thoughtful communication, and cultural integration. A particular focus is set on the adoption journey of the Powerbit X, a drill bit technology with significant potential for operational and environmental gains.

Water in mining, mineral processing and metal production on a life cycle basis has been at the top of agendas for various industries, government agencies, research organisations, academic institutions and communities. As a result, a number of water footprint assessment methodologies have been developed. However, their practical applications in mining and mineral processing industries with specific case studies are still rare.A key objective of the Minerals Down Under Flagship is to contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Australian mining and mineral industries. Researchers in the Mineral Futures theme have developed robust assessment methods to evaluate the impact of mining and minerals technology development on the environment. The future of mining and the mineral industry is strongly linked with its sustainability - better water management strategies will need to be implemented.Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been a recognised method for measuring the environmental impacts of products, processes and services. It provides a scientifically sound method of comparing products and processes using a common basis and identifies so called æhot spotsÆ and opportunities for reducing environmental impacts. The water footprint of mining, mineral processing and metal production using an LCA basis is still scarce in the literature. Research methodology is now being applied in detail for copper, gold and nickel. A primary focus has been the relationship between ore grade and water use for which mathematical models are being developed. These types of models provide inputs for LCA of mining and mineral processing plants and can identify water saving opportunities through scenarios and process route analysis.CITATION:Northey, S and Haque, N, 2013. Introduction 1. Factors on Which the Design of the Roaster Plant was Based The roasting operation at Lake Shore, it was realized from the outset, would be profitable only if costs and losses could be reduced to a low figure. It was absolutely imperative that the operation should be self roasting over the whole range of tonnages and sulphur grades which might obtain during the life of the mine. The roasting operation could not bear the cost in fuel and labour of even a partially fired roast. To meet this requirement, it was necessary to resort to additional insulation in the construction of the roaster and to provide a more flexible means of rabble cooling than the conventional water jacket (see p. 31). A second basic consideration was that of handling a wet, putty-like concentrate. The operating costs of a drier ruled out the possibility of drying the charge before feeding it to the roaster. Moreover, the dusting which would result from charging a dry product virtually all -40 micron (325 mesh) in size would seriously handicap the use of a dryer. Dust lubrication (p. 3S) due to the back-mixing action of the Edwards rabbles, and the use of a Sullivan slapper ( p. 27) on the concentrate filter, completely solved the problem of handling the roast feed. The third consideration was the reduction of dusting to a sufficiently low point that a Cottrell or other dust collecting system was unnecessary. The Edwards roaster when properly supervised, it is believed, can be operated to give the minimum possible dusting. At Lake Shore, the evidence has been that less than 1 per cent dusting occurs at any time and that the greater part of the dust produced is recovered either in the spray tower or in the dust chambers.

Introduction The world's largest known deposits of natural sodium sulphate (Glauber salt), generally termed 'alkali ' throughout western Canada, are located in the Province of Saskatchewan: reserves are estimated to exceed 200,000,000 tons. These are surface deposits resulting from the recent or present-day natural evaporation of brines, in which respect they are similar to those occurring in certain other parts of the world, as in semi-arid sections of the United States, Russia, Germany and Austria. In some areas, underground deposits formed hundreds of thousands of years ago have been _encountered in drilling, and indications are that they also were formed under arid or semi-arid conditions. The master key to the formation of deposits of natural sodium sulphate, wherever they occur, is a climate, either past or present, under which evaporation exceeds precipitation over a considerable period of time. Commercial development of the Saskatchewan deposits began about thirty years ago. Previously, the demand for sodium sulphate had largely been met by salt cake produced as a by-product in the manufacture of hydrochloric acid from common salt. The rapid increase in the production of Kraft paper and, more recently, the development of synthetic detergent materials, have caused a marked increase in the market for sodium sulphate. This chemical gives the extra toughness to Kraft paper and is used in detergent compositions in proportions as high as 75 per cent. Saskatchewan now has six commercial plants producing natural sodium sulphate. Production from each in the fiscal years 1947 and 1948 is shown in Table I. The newest and latest plant is that of Saskatchewan Minerals, at Chaplin, which 1s designed to produce up to 150,000 tons of salt cake, 98.5 to 99.5 per cent pure, yearly. This is equivalent to about 24 percent of the total United States production of crude commercial salt cake for 1947.

A lot of talk has been generated about the so called ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) and its potential to transform the way we interact with our homes and devices. But the true potential and value of IoT is not going to be realised by the general consumer but by businesses.This paper outlines the application of IoT in mining and how it is a natural extension to the base networks becoming commonplace in both surface and underground mines. The potential for ubiquitous monitoring throughout a mining operation at low capital and support costs will transform the ability to monitor, analyse, report and manage all of the key processes involved in a mining operation.Importantly, the paper will discuss the practical applications that the IoT offers mining and explain how this really is transformative technology, not just the latest buzz words from the information technology (IT) world. The pre-fabricated outdoor rooms are often utilised near the mines and construction sites for office purposes. The paper has presented modelling and simulation results of the integration of commercially available glass coated photovoltaic (PV) energy technology and solar ventilation technology into a pre-fabricated outdoor room. The pre-fabricated outdoor room has been setup at Concordia University, Montréal for full scale testing of the glass coated PV modules with solar air ventilation. The computer simulation model has been developed for PV modules installed on a double wall wooden frame in an outdoor room based on its preliminary field testing. The testing apparatus was a wooden frame assembly of double wall with solar air ventilation: two adjacent glass coated PV modules, air column and plywood board filled with polystyrene. The measurement data collected from various sensors were: solar intensity, ambient air temperature, room air temperature, electric power, surface temperatures of PV modules and plywood board, air velocities and air temperatures in the air column. The enhancement in the air velocity of the air column was achieved with an exhaust fan fixed in an outdoor room. The simulation model is used to perform the two dimensional energy analyses with applied one dimensional solution of steady state heat conduction equations. The simulation model is based on conjugate heat exchange paths with network boundary conditions of convection, radiation heat exchange and solar air ventilation heat transport. The model parameters are based on measured values of ambient air temperature, room air temperature, air velocity at outlet of air column in double wall, electric power and available solar intensity. The model has predicted fairly well energy performance of glass coated PV modules with solar air ventilation installed on a wooden frame. The model is also useful for predicting heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) requirements for the pre-fabricated outdoor rooms.

"SUMMARY The “28 May Station” is the only transfer station between the existing Green and Red metro lines in Baku. As part of the huge development strategy of the metro network, the complete separation of the existing underground lines has been planned at this location, in order to simplify the operation of the future metro system. The extreme challenge of the project is represented by the need of achieve the separation of such lines over a breakdown of the operation of just five weeks. The lack of direct access from the surface, a complex geology with artesian water layers, a congested underground space and sensible buildings represent additional constraints. The chosen design solution consists in creating a complex steel pipe jacking frame around the operating tunnels and then excavating under such frame two large caverns where the separation of the existing lines and the construction of the new metro tunnels will be achieved. Soil treatments have been conceived to mitigate the geotechnical risks and to reduce possible impacts on the existing structures. The paper illustrate the challenges of this extraordinary project, one of the most complex underground structures under study, the design solutions and the risk management approach used to manage the complexity and to design the mitigations measures. INTRODUCTION The metro network in the capital of Azerbaijan is rapidly growing together with its metropolitan area. The beginnings of the existing metro system started in Baku in 1967 in Soviet times. To date, only two lines (Green and Red) are in operation with a total length of 34 km, including 23 stations. The future network will be much wider: besides the construction of three completely new lines and the extension of two existing lines, the whole metro project includes the development and modernization of the existing metro sections. A consortium formed by Systra (leader), Mott MacDonald (Praha) and Saman (Korea) awarded the contract for the preliminary and detailed design of infrastructures for the extension of Baku Metro Network. This extension consists in 83 km of new lines and extension of existing lines. As part of this modernization project, the connection of the Green Line at the 28 May / Cefer Cabbarli Stations, focus of this paper, represent also it’s ""Achilles' heel"" given that the already very congested system have only one transfer station."

This paper demonstrates an application of a recently developed Risk-Cost-Benefit (RCB) Framework to environmental risk management in the mining industry. The environmental application of the RCB Framework as part of an ACARP project (Kizil, Bye and Joy, 2012) involved a thorough selection process with site visits and in-depth discussions with the case study siteÆs environmental management team. Under their guidance, the highest risk of environmental impact at the case study site was identified as æroad subsidenceÆ at the time when the project work was undertaken. This paper presents the unique application of the RCB Framework to examine the risk of mining-induced subsidence and its impact on one of AustraliaÆs busiest highways, with a traffic volume of 38 000 vehicles per day (NSW RTA AADT, 2008). The RCB Framework was employed to assess the optimum group of controls for road subsidence risk management to ensure highway availability while mining occurs. Whilst this paper focuses on road subsidence, the methodology employed can be directly applied to other environmental concerns including preparation for mine closure, rehabilitation planning and waste management. The RCB Framework incorporates mathematical modules which were developed to enable complex yet tightly integrated RCB calculations. The process integrates the risk-control effectiveness assessment to determine that the selected safety initiative is financially beneficial to the mine site and company. This concept has been applied to a number of high-risk mining areas targeting safety, productivity and environmental issues. This paper introduces the five-staged RCB Framework, incorporating the RCB tools RCBGEN (Risk-Cost-Benefit Generator) and RCEMETHOD (Risk-Control-Effectiveness Method), and demonstrates its practical application to the risk management of a road subsidence case study. The case study looks at potential pavement damages, in particular, the occurrence of pavement stepping on the surface of the highway as a result of vertical subsidence. This type of road damage was previously experienced at another major inter-city route while underground mining occurred in the region where the case study site is located. The RCB Framework has been successfully applied to the analysis of the road subsidence case study and determined the risk reduction and financial benefits of implementing a range of risk-controls. User-friendly RCB Charts to provide an aid for decision-making were produced. The value of using the RCB charts to achieve balance between risk, cost and productivity in the decision-making process for risk management has been explained. The case study determined that pavement slots and fibre-optic cable monitoring were relatively low-cost and effective controls applied in the mining industry for the first time at a global level.This paper supports the industryÆs ongoing efforts to manage risk to ALARP (as low as reasonably practicable) and achieve æzero harmÆ by providing a new Framework to more effectively establish the adequacy of controls.CITATION:Kizil, G V, Bye, A and Joy, J, 2012. G-ResourcesÆ Martabe Mine in North Sumatra, Indonesia, is a US$700 M world-class and world-scale operation in a country which, with a few notable smaller scale exceptions, has had no significant hard rock mining development in more than ten years.The mine was commissioned in the middle part of 2012 and poured first gold on 24 July. At full production Martabe will produce 250 000 oz/a of gold and 2 - 3 Moz/a of silver at cash costs in the lowest quartile. The mine location is on the west coast of North Sumatra, which experiences annual rainfall of 4 m with no notable dry season, adjacent to seismically active fault zones, and relatively close to a rural community of 31 000 people with no significant industrial experience.The management team has successfully forged strong links with the various government departments and levels in Jakarta, North Sumatra Province and the local Regencies; developed long-term relationships with the various community groups within the local district of Batangtoru to build a sustainable social licence; has dealt with the physical and environmental challenges presented by the project location, and has successfully raised more than US$900 M over a period of three years for the original acquisition then the development of the project.Whilst in its infancy of operation, the mine is set up to deliver a long-term sustainable future for the company, the shareholders, and the people of Batangtoru and all stakeholders generally. This paper, describing the mining practices at the Pilares mine, Pilares de Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts. At present (1930) practically all the mineral production from the Nacozari district is from the Pilares mine of the Moctezuma Copper Co., a subsidiary of the Phelps Dodge Corporation. The ore is mined for its copper but contains associated silver in small quantities.

The Richmond San Rafael Bridge (Figure 1) is a 4.3 mile long major toll bridge span across northern San Francisco Bay. Tutor-Saliba/Koch/Tidewater (TSKT) conducted a comprehensive seismic retrofit, which was at the time Caltrans? largest-ever construction contract at $484 million. The robust foundation retrofit design of 11 bridge piers included the installation of 26 new, large diameter (126 to 162 inch OD, wall thickness 1.5 to 2.25 inches) CIDH and CISS piles, with steel pipe piles installed to tip elevations of Elev. ?140 to -220 ft, in water depths up to 70 feet. The open-ended steel pipe piles had initial sections ranging from 71 to 172 feet long, with full lengths that extended to the bay bottom and then through 100 to 130 feet of marine sediments to top of bedrock. The marine soils of most interest consisted mainly of soft to firm Young Bay Mud (YBM), a silty, moderately-sensitive clay common to SF Bay. A key constructability issue was the prediction of pipe piles ?running? under self weight (198 to 625 kips in air) and pile driving hammer weight (IHC S-500 with total assembly weight of 322 kips). The term "pile running" is used to describe the penetration of the pile into the soil due to the self-weight of the pile only. This issue was critical because 1) there was limited head room under the bridge deck, and 2) if piles run too deep, the pile splicing on several piles would be problematic (the lowest desirable pile top elevation after running was +10 ft). While running measurements are sometimes made during marine/nearshore construction, there is little published data on predicted vs. actual running. This paper discusses the running prediction under self weight for 26 piles, and the methodology used in developing the predictions, which ranged from 15 to 94 ft of penetration below mudline. Pile running was recorded and compared with predicted values. The prediction methodology was quite good, and no significant constructability problems were encountered. The authors ?tweaked? the model to provide a slightly improved prediction method. The paper presents the model, predictions, observations, and discusses important lessons learned.

"INTRODUCTION As a part of the program of investigation of domestic sources of manganese ore, mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines obtained and examined samples of ore from six properties in the vicinity of Pioche, Lincoln County, Nev., and from one property near Caliente, Lincoln County, Nev. As the ores were too low-grade to be acceptable for the direct production of ferromanganese, their amenability to concentration by ore-dressing methods was investigated.In general, the Pioche ores had a low manganese content and, owing to extremely intimate association of manganese minerals with iron oxide and nonmetallic gangue, were refractory to concentration by ore-dressing methods. Only two samples (Zero Gap and Wheeler ores) were amenable to the production of concentrates that would sinter to a marketable plus 35-percent manganese grade. The Prince Consolidated and Ely Valley No. 1.ores were roasted and sintered to produce lead-silver-zinc fumes. The residues were of possible value as manganiferous iron ore. No marketable manganese products were made from Calton semi-oxidized ore, but over 80 percent recoveries of lead, silver, and zinc were made by bulk sulfide flotation followed by Diming of the sulfide concentrate. No satisfactory results were obtained by treatment of Golden Eagle and Ely Valley No. 2 ores.The Cudverwell ore was amenable to the production of high-grade manganese concentrates by ore-drssing methods. However, fine grinding was required to effect mineral liberation, and loss of manganese as slime limited the mangenese recoveries obtainable.In the coarse of the investigations, many data were obtained and compiled, but for the sake of brevity, several data, of secondary importance have been omitted or condensed, and only the tests giving the more promising results are discussed in detail. For convenience, the report has been divided into two parts, one opertaining to the Pioche ores and the other summarzing results obtained by testing Culverwell ore."

The first metal-mine accident-prevention course was prepared and published in 1942-45 as a series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57). The scope of the course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date, and it is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57, revised) on accident prevention in metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the uses of investigations and reports of all accidents.

Fur a secure mineral supply position to be maintained in the Fiuropean Community there must be a supply of qualified people in the minerals industries. The education of the people required to run and develop these industries should be a priority in the community. This means that there should be a strong capability in mining engineering education. The mining engineering professors decided in 1990 to get together in a new Society to discuss the problems. The Society of Mining Professors/Societat der Berg-baukunde was formed at a meeting in Austria in October 1990. It is basically a F.uropean Society with a few member professors from outside Europe to keep the Society conversant with trends elsewhere. The objectives of the Society are to see that the mining universities in Fiurope maintain standards and produce enough mining engineers. The present membership of the Society and the work of developing a database of current courses is described. Working from the knowledge base developed, it will be possible to design a 'European' mining degree course. The problems which will have to be addressed have been identified and are described in detail.The paper finally goes on to discuss the other problems that universities are facing, the economic problems and above all the lack of students applying for mining courses across Europe. The help and active participation of the mining industry, if that industry still wishes to employ mining engineers, is identified as the only possible solution to those problems.
