Mining is a water intensive sector, contributing to declining water resource quality around the world. Improvements to current mine water management practices can help reduce the amount of water utilised by the mining sector and the impact on water resources. Creating a water account can help companies understand water use in their operations and identify areas where water reduction is possible. Water accounting methods include the Water Footprint Network method and the WaterMiner tool.The Water Footprint Network method is used to determine the amount of direct and indirect water used by an organisation either in a process or to manufacture a product. The total water footprint is divided into the blue, green and grey water footprints. Blue water is the amount of water abstracted from surface and ground water resources. Green water is the amount of rain water utilised. Grey water is the amount of freshwater required to assimilate the waste stream to the natural resource and still conform to ambient water quality standards.The WaterMiner tool is a program available via the internet, which can be used to model water use of mineral processing sites. The program reports the amount of raw, worked and treated water used by the process and recommends flows that can be added to reduce the amount of fresh water required by the process.To gain information on mine water management practices in South Africa, a water account for a platinum mine was developed using the Water Footprint Network method and WaterMiner tool. Principles of Green Chemistry provide useful guidance for sustainable mineral process development. Laboratory bench scale testing was carried out using pregnant cyanide leach solutions, and a number of commercially available mercury precipitation reagents were compared using jar testing to determine the most efficient and selective reagents for mercury precipitation. The most efficient reagent identified was sodium polymeric thiocarbonate (NaPTC).Coagulation experiments with fine diatomaceous earth resulted in a stable precipitate, with good settling properties. On line monitoring of the mercury in solution is recommended for process implementation to conserve reagent removing approximately 90-95% of the mercury with minimal silver and negligible gold losses.

The new, 2.600 m long pipe under the river Elbe in Hamburg/Germany required for 2 traffic lanes, emergency lane and space for utilities a boring diameter of 14,20 m(46,6 ft). According the geology (glacial deposits consisting of clay, sand and marl, all containing big boulders) a Slurry-Shield with crusher was selected. With a minimum cover of 7 m and a maximum pressure of 5,6 bar extensive ground treatment was necessary to make the drive feasible. The machine contains a lot of new developments. The drive was finished in spring 2000 so all experiences can be reported. A special risk sharing contract avoided completely litigation.

"Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Limited is at present B,C.'s only asbestos mining company, and has been actively engaged in the management and operation of the Cassiar Mine since the early 1950's. The Cassiar operations are located between 3,500' and 6,600' elevation in a secluded mountainous area of northern B.C., approximately 100 miles by road southwest of Watson Lake in the Yukon Territory. Climatic conditions in this area range from mild warm in the summer, to extremely cold during the long winter period.The minesite itself is located over a mile above sea level at the top of McDame Mountain, where year round 24 hours per day miners extract the chrysotile ore from the surrounding waste by standard open pit techniques. The ore body dips into the mountain at about a 45° angle, and as the mining progresses, larger stripping ratios are required. Waste to ore ratio this year will be more than 10 to l whereas only a few years ago ratios of 3 or 4 to l were possible. After drilling, blasting, and loading by shovel onto trucks, the asbestos ore is transported to the Primary Crushing Plant for crushing prior to transport by aerial tramway more than three miles to the Concentrator and Mill in the valley below, where the fibre is extracted from the barren host rock serpentine and milled into numerous grades for shipment to asbestos users round the world. The major air usage is associated with the milling process, presently requiring over 500,000 CFM, with future requirements expected to exceed 840,000 CFM by the end of the decade."

Operators of construction equipment perform various duties at work that expose them to a variety of risk factors that may lead to health problems. A few of the health hazards among operators of construction equipment are: (a) whole-body vibration, (b) awkward postural requirements (including static sitting), (c) dust, (d) noise, (e) temperature extremes, and (f) shift work. It has been suggested that operating engineers (OEs) are exposed to two important risk factors for the development of musculoskeletal disorders: whole-body vibration and non-neutral body postures. Method: This review evaluates selected papers that have studied exposure to whole-body vibration and awkward posture among operators of mobile equipment. There have been only few studies that have specifically examined exposure of these risk factors among operators of construction equipment. Thus other studies from related industry and equipment were reviewed as applicable. Conclusion: In order to better understand whole-body vibration and postural stress among OEs, it is recommended that future studies are needed in evaluating these risk factors among OEs.

China, Mexico, Spain and Turkey are the leading producers of celestite (strontium sulfate), the most common strontium mineral. Of an estimated 510 kt (562,000 st) of celestite produced worldwide during 2004, 98 percent was produced in those countries. Deposits of strontianite (strontium carbonate), another strontium mineral, have been identified in China and Malawi. Relatively small quantities are reported from the deposit in China. Although celestite deposits occur in the United States, no domestic celestite has been mined since 1959.

This report, authorized under Contract Number H0220065, Amendment Number Six, documents the results of an investigation of lighting system modifications and designs for working place illumination in high and low coal entries of underground coal mines. The portable and machine mounted system designs, both modified and prototype, represent a continuation of work performed under Contract Number H0111403, Amendment Number One. See the Final Technical Report dated May 26, 1972 for detailed information concerning this prior Contract. All modified and prototype systems met the performance requirements of Bureau of Mines Specification 2G, as proved by test. In addition, the systems met the requirement for illumination, as specified in the Contract and in the proposed standards which were generated in response to Public Law 91-173.

This report describes the development and underground operation of a semi-automatic, raise climber, Man and Supply Hoist System designed for stope access in underground metal and nonmetal mines. Demonstrated capabilities of the system include a 4000-lb payload capacity, control from the traveling cage and from up to five remote stations, operating in vertical or inclined raises 5 ft in diameter and up to 300 ft in length and a travel speed of 50 ft/min. The 'system has the capability of operating in crooked raises because the conveyance climbs two stationary wire ropes suspended down the raise. The drive unit is electrically powered with power and control signals supplied to the drive unit through an armored cable also suspended down the raise. The system has been designed for portability, ease of installation and minimum raise development. The system can be installed by two men in five shifts. The hoist has been demonstrated successfully in two underground applications. The first demonstration was in a 5-ft diam, 60 deg inclined raise over a 2-month period. The second demonstration utilized a vertical 5-ft diam borehole to access a blast-hole stoping area. The system successfully provided two shift-a-day service over a 7-month duration demonstration. This report provides a detailed description of the hoist design and its demonstrated performance in two mine applications.

"The stress equilibrium is disturbed in a body of rock by a mine opening and is restored by a redistribution of the stresses around the opening. The pattern of the redistribution of unilateral stress around an opening has been established by mathematical analysis and photoelastic measurements. The pattern for multilateral stress is found by superimposition of unilateral fields. The mathematical analysts do not use the elastic moduli as parameters and they are not significant in photoelastic work. The medium is isotropic. The concept of unilateral stress from vertical loading and the classical pattern of its stress distribution around openings does not explain commonly observed failures around the perimeters of mine openings. They show evidence of compression where tension is postulated.When it is recognized that few minerals and perhaps no rocks are Hooke Solids, most rocks must be St. Venant Solids. The components have varying degrees of elasticity and viscosity. The assembly will be-have elastically to rupture under shock loading, but when loaded short of rupture will adjust viscously to equilibrium. Similarly, the highly elastic components may initiate rupture before equilibrium can be established when stress is instantaneously relieved. Polycrystalline adjustments may produce permanent deformation. The mechanics of consolidation, especially in sedimentary deposits, ac-quire a stress component normal to the direction of compaction which can exceed that of the loading. It is one source of prestress. There are others. The principles of prestress design are based on the normal beam reactions, modified by a built-in compression in the lower chord. When the beam is loaded to design limits, the lower chord retains some compression and the whole beam depth is effective in compression. Some of the . common evidences of failure in compression over a mine opening can be duplicated in a prestressed experimental model.When the triaxial stress pattern is recognized and suitable measuring techniques are devised, mine design can be done on a rational basis."

THE origin of spontaneous combustion in collieries is, of course, chiefly due to bad system in laying out the pits, unclean workings, insufficient ventilation, and neglect in damming off works after they are exhausted of the main coal. This is particularly indispensable in the Richmond field, because it is difficult and dangerous here, on account of the inferior roof, to remove the last vestiges of coal ; and we are compelled also to retain all the slates and bands, as far as possible, in the pit, to help fill up, although such material is liable to fire. This, however, can be prevented to a great extent, as men¬tioned below. I am satisfied that the only system of working this thick coal is by cross-cutting ( Querbau, ouvrage à travers) or working in benches, as practiced in France (Creusot, Rive de Gier, St. Etienne), in Sile¬sia (Königsgrube), which I have used as far as it is practicable in an old pit, almost torn to pieces by former workings. Modifications may, of course, be needed, even in the same pit, on account of irregu¬larities in the seam. I am also satisfied for economical reasons (on account of the heavy cost for timbering) that pits here ought to be worked upwards, even if it requires a longer period of time to win the coal, and a greater outlay of capital to commence with. The various saddle-shaped "troubles" making natural minor basins in the main basin aid in the execution of this plan. A pit worked once ought to be worked out clean, given up, and dammed off forever. If sections of proper height are assumed, according to the required amount of production for a certain period of time, they ought to be worked out and filled in as much as possible, dammed off, and ulti¬mately allowed to fill up with water, in order to protect the tipper works in future from fire in the gob below. This I consider indispen¬sable, because we may not be able profitably to fill in all the ground. To do so we have to use the waste of the mine, although it is liable to fire in time. In using this stuff, it ought to be surrounded by walls of rock not liable to take fire, laid firmly in clay, the gob being in the middle, and firmly covered and packed with clay on top. In

This work was done by the Bureau of Mines to provide quarry operators with an uncomplicated, first-approximation method for designing blast patterns, considering geologic structure, and to show the valid use of the technique by comparing drill and blast pattern dimensions used in the quarry with those determined by the presented method. The author visited 12 limestone and dolomite quarries in Ohio (Adam, Crawford, and Highland Counties), Wisconsin (Milwaukee, Racine, and Waukesha Counties), and Minnesota (Fillmore, Olmsted, and Wabasha Counties); observed the blasting practices; studied the major geologic features; and after discussion with the quarry managers, foremen, and blasters, compared the quarry blasting patterns with those as calculated by the empirical formulas (after R. L. Ash), with geologic structural considerations. When geologic structure such as bedding, jointing, folding, and caves, as well as explosive properties and field performance characteristics are accounted for in a manner suggested by the research, the presented empirical formulas may be used as a good first approximation. The included steps in planning a blast design and generalized blast patterns should be of help to the quarry operator. Design changes are recommended for those quarries where problems are occurring.

Development during the year 1941 on the Texas Gulf Coast resulted in the dis covery of 27 new fields as compared to 26 fields for the year 1940. Drilling.—During the year, 1405 wells were drilled. Of this number, 1031 were completed as oil wells with 375,000 bbl. daily of new production; 50 were com pleted as gas wells and 324 were failures. The most active area was Jackson County, where 375 wells were drilled and 336 of them accounting for 190,000 bbl. daily of new production. Types of Fields.—Of the 2 7 new fields, 14 are considered to be oil fields, 8 are listed as gas-distillate fields and 5 as gas fields. This may be compared to 26 fields found in 1940, of which 14 were oil fields and 12 gas-distillate fields. Producing Sections.—Frio discoveries retained their predominant position by having 10 Frio fields discovered in comparison to 6 fields in the Wilcox, 4 in the Yegua, 5 in the Miocene and 2 in the Jackson. In the previous year 15 Frio fields were found, 4 in the Wilcox, 2 each in the Yegua, Cook Mountain and Miocene, and I in the Jackson. Production.—Production increased over 1940 approximately 10 per cent, being 113,726,893 bbl. for the year 1941 and 104,127,247 bbl. for 1940. The statistics in Tables I and 2 include distillate and condensate as oil production because no separate reports have been compiled. It is hoped that this separation may be possible some day, but as a great many fields produce both oil and distillate and these arc commingled in pipe lines, separation of statistics will be more difficult than for other areas. New Fields Big Hill, Jefferson County.—Stanolind Oil and Gas Company's No. I George D. Anderson was completed as a gas well from a Frio sand at 8705 to 8720 ft., on Dec. 24, 1941, after having been drilled to a depth of 9500 ft. Additional development is being carried on but it is not possible to evaluate this discovery at this time. Brushy Creek Field, Lavaca County.— Shell Oil Corporation's No. I D. G. McManus was completed as the discovery well in the Brushy Creek field on Oct. 29, 1941, from a Wilcox sand through perforations at 7225 to 7230 ft., making gas and 180 bbl. of 59° gravity distillate. This well was bottomed at 10,998 ft. in the Wilcox. No statement can be made at this time as to the importance of this discovery. Chenango Field, Brazoria County.—J. N. Rayzor et al. completed their No. I Sarah J. Christian through perforations at 8564 to 8572 ft. in a Frio sand, for 453 bbl. of 37.7° gravity oil, on Feb. 6, 1941, after having drilled to 9564 ft. Several wells were drilled in this area during the year but failed to establish important production. This is considered a minor discovery. Clodine Field, Fort Bend County.—Providence Oil Company's No. I Hatfield was the discovery well of the Clodine field, being completed through perforations at 7499 to 7502 ft. for 108 bbl. of 51.2° gravity distillate, on June 19, 1941. In an effort to improve efficiencies and reduce costs, AngloGold has embarked on a process to develop and deliver consistent, high quality, tailings based support or construction products to stopes and tunnels on request. A three-phase approach of product conceptualisation, design and delivery has been adopted. To date a substantial amount of laboratory development has taken place with promising results, indicating that the project aims are achievable. This paper constitutes the third progress report on a national survey of the use of detachable bits in metal mines. It presents comparative costs of drilling with conventional and detachable bits and describes the operating practice in rock drilling and the reconditioning of drill steel and bits at 10 mines not discussed in previous reports.3/ ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This report has been prepared with the assistance and cooperation of the officials and staff members at the mines visited. Costs and other data at individual mines were developed and furnished by the operators.

Introduction For the compliment paid me by the Institute's kind invitation to speak this afternoon, I am very grateful. For the astuteness of your officers in determining that encouragement should be given, through the medium of a paper, towards accident prevention in coal mines, the coal industry cannot but be grateful. Some day, and let us hope soon, a more developed paper may supersede this one. In the meantime, if some knowledge of what one coal field has been able to accomplish, even in the initial stages of its effort, will induce other fields and other sections of the mining industry to launch similar experiments, much good will result and a more developed dissertation on the subject will make its appearance.
