Two facets of surface mining were studied: feasibility of using training simulators to increase productivity of haulage trucks, front-end loaders, and shovels; and improving the efficiency of dragline operations with a computer-aided analysis of dragline usage and the addition of an on-board operator display. Training costs per student were estimated based on current training practices. Training objectives were derived from task: analyses of haulage trucks, front-end loaders, and shovels. The cost effectiveness of training simulators was determined. A computer-aided analysis defined the critical performance parameters. An on-board operator's display is recommended to improve operator efficiency.

In an earlier series of 15 Reports of Investigations on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace, experimental data were given on the operations of a custom smelter, a smelter treating rich lead products, and a smelter treating highly zinciferous charges. Five "reports" were written on each of the three types of operation, which were later compared in a summary written for the Institute. Developments in each of these types of operation in lead smelting since the last of the above reports was written have continued and have followed modifications necessitated by changes in the nature of the products received for smelting. The sintering-blast furnace-smelting plants have improved their sintering operation .and have made "2-pass" sintering a more standard operation; the richer lead feeds are diluted when marginal precious metal ores are not available to prevent fusion of the sinter cakes and to permit air to contact the sulfides. Means have been devised to make it easier to remove metallic lead from the wind boxes, but no attempts have been observed to use the D & L somewhat as an ore hearth to make more metallic lead. Except in those cases where zinc-rich lead blast-furnace slags were to be retreated in a "slag-fuming furnace," the sintering and the blast-furnace operations were so carried out that a relatively "clean," lead-poor, final slag was discarded.

The evaluation of raw materials in terms of quality profile, mineralogical character and mechanical properties is of great importance to the cement industry. The variability of their chemistry and structure is among the decisive design parameters in the choice of any mining, handling and preblending systems. Furthermore, clinker and cement production require sound estimates of the above parameters, to help produce some appropriate and realistic raw mix configurations and achieve minimum standard deviation of the major components. This paper addresses this subject from the perspective of a cement producer and presents the principles of a methodology aimed at optimizing mine planning and process design. Finally, results from case studies on actual sedimentary deposits currently in operation are discussed.

Context ? Community engagement has become an increasingly significant and challenging part of mineral exploration and mine development; indeed, opposition from communities proximate to a proposed mine site has been known to derail technologically- and financially-sound projects. ? These cases suggest that mining firms need to better understand how to engage constructively with local communities in the pursuit of their claims. ? While a range of publications exist promoting various community engagement strategies, these recommendations, when viewed as a whole, are disjointed and largely untested in real development contexts. Aims of Presentation 1. Synthesize industry, NGO, government and academic publications focused on community engagement best practice in order to highlight those practices that are most commonly recommended. 2. Review the (Canadian) mining industry?s experience with some of these strategies based on existing case material in order to identify the extent to which commonly prescribed strategies are used and validated in practice.

The strength of coal mass saturated with gas is an essential parameter in studying the mechanism of gas and coal outburst, and its prediction method. Up to now, there has not been a method for determining the strength of coal mass saturated with gas. This paper describes a new method whereby the strength of in-situ coal mass can be determined and stored continuously and automatically. The simulation results obtained in the laboratory indicate that the new method allows a fast, reliable, inexpensive and convenient determination of the strength of coal mass.

The Julius Kruttschnitt semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill model was developed by Leung in the 1980s and extensively updated to the variable rates model by Morrell and Morrison in 1996. Since then only minor upgrades have been incorporated in the version distributed in the JKSimMet simulator. A number of improvements, developed over the course of the AMIRA P9 project and in recent independent work, have now been incorporated. These improvements are based on a power-based model that directly relates the degree of breakage with energy consumption. The new size-dependent breakage function has been incorporated. The upgrades include more accurate predictions for a wide range of mill fillings (ten - 40 per cent), slurry hold-up in the mill, pebble discharge rate and the influence of changes in feed size and ball load.The paper presents the status of progress in the model development. The upgraded model will greatly enhance its application to challenging design and optimisation studies required to optimise the performance of SAG milling circuits.CITATION:Kojovic, T, Hilden, M M, Powell, M S and Bailey, C, 2012. No major changes took place in the salt industry during 2004. No new uses of salt appeared and only localized supply disruptions occurred. Many salt producers reported slightly increased salt sales and profits for the year. In the United States, about half of the salt supply is produced as brine, by solution mining, and is used by the chemicals industry. One-third of U.S. salt is produced as rock salt by 14 underground mines. The remaining two production techniques, each with less than 10 percent of the total tonnage, are vacuum-pan-evaporation for refined, food-grade salt, and solar pond crystallized salt.

The greatly extended use of the underground trolley-locomotive system for hauling coal without doubt was one of the most important factors in the rapid progress of coal mining and the increased production of coal in American coal mines during the period 1910-20. Much of the superior efficiency of production of our underground coal and metal lines should also be credited to the trolley locomotive system. The trend to mechanization of mines during the past 15 years, mere particularly the past 5 years, with higher production per man employed and greatly accelerated advancement of working places, has required increased use of trolley locomotives, necessitating larger equipment, higher speeds, and more 'frequent turn over of pit cars. This is re¬flected in increased size of locomotives and the use of larger mine ears (some with a capacity up to or over 10 tons); moreover, heavier rails and larger-size trolley wires have boon or ought to have boon installed. Trolley-locomotive haulage has proved to be rapid; economical, efficient, and productive; nevertheless; in spite of these advantages, so-many hazardous features and, unsafe conditions are involved and the price paid in life and property is so high as to justify the statement that the system should be scrapped if it cannot be operated under reasonably safe conditions. Since bare trolloy wires were introduced into underground mines, they have boon responsible for the death of hundreds of diners, property damage totaling millions of dollars, an indeterminate loss of tonnage through the abandonment of mines or parts of mines, and loss of time after disasters caused by fires or explosions originated by the trolley haulage system.

The authors were involved in the Trial Blast work at Chek Lap Kok, the site of the new Hong Kong Airport. As part of that work a series of computer programs including 3x30, QFRAG, DESIGNER and 3DMUCK was employed to predict various aspects of the trial blast programme. These aspects included fragmentation and muckpiie shape. This provided an excellent opportunity for these programs to be calibrated, verified and compared under controlled conditions. The results indicated that computer simulation has reached a high level of sophistication and good correlation between prediction and measured results was found.

Exposure to vibration induced in and around underground mine’s exploration is a major concern to vehicles operators. Most of these drivers over time develop serious spinal musculoskeletal and discs problems causing low back injuries. The first purpose of this paper is to analyze the performance and dynamic response of driver/operator when subjected to different levels of vibration due to rough road conditions depicted in a mine field. The second purpose of the paper is to quantify the energy transmission in the presence of seat padding with special characteristics and active suspension. Using experimental testing data collected at NIOSH/PRL (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health/ Pittsburgh Research Laboratory) along with model simulation algorithms developed at the University of Illinois at Chicago we investigated how acceleration transfer functions as well as absorbed power affects the different parts of the body. To this end, we used a previously validated human model which includes the head, torso segments and legs. The connective forces between body segments were modeled through modal analysis techniques from previous experimental data at the UIC Vehicle Technology Laboratory. The absorbed power and energy transmitted to the body are used as an index measure to assess the viability of the different seat padding’s and active seat suspension control strategies.

Long-term closure alternative selection for heap leach pad effluent is a daunting task. Passive water treatment, if designed with enough long-term capacity, can minimize long term O&M while meeting water quality objectives. Leach pad effluent from a 30-acre leach pad at Basin Creek Mine, Basin, Montana was targeted for long-term water treatment using a passive water treatment system. The objectives and results of design and construction are: 1. Design a long-term passive system utilizing existing infrastructure. 2. Construct a field scale pilot test at the mine site.

The development of mechanical flotation cells has resulted in larger and better cells. This has led to flotation banks with only a few units, even in large-scale operations. This equipment development makes the old operational considerations ineffective. The flotation cell must be considered as a single reactor unit capable of handling specific tasks and getting excellent metallurgical performance. The result of the unit reactor concept development was the new large TankCell that comes in sizes up to 113 m3 (4,000 cu ft). The TankCell construction includes new modified rotor-stator designs, new tank geometries and a froth-handling capability independent from subprocesses taking place in the pulp (i.e., air addition). The conventional idea of a single flotation cell type for fine, intermediate and coarse materials does not give optimal results. Optimal flotation of coarse and fine particles needs different mechanism designs, impeller tip speeds and different froth control objectives.

The Climax Molybdenum Mine, located near Leadville, Colorado, is the site of a lengthy mining history spanning more than 80 years. In the 1960’s, extraction of molybdenum from oxide ore located adjacent to the massive molybdenite sulfide deposit resulted in the construction of an earthen core dam to impound fine-grained oxide tailing in the Eagle River Valley. Through recognized value of water storage and reclamation opportunities, a tailing removal project was initiated in 1993 to convert the impoundment facilities to a post-mining beneficial land use of developed water resources. An evaluation of the effect residual materials and lake dynamics would have on in-stream water quality was performed. Eagle Park Reservoir stands as a model for future reclamation efforts that involve water delivery to highly sensitive receiving waters. This paper provides a case study on project development, the evolution of water quality assessment, and the regulatory framework that contributed to this project’s success.

Smarter Gravity Separation Using the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig With relatively coarse grained and easy-to-process ore sources rapidly dwindling, smarter techniques are becoming more necessary for the continued success of mineral processing operations, while increasing environmental pressures also require more environmentally friendly solutions. Gravity concentration has long been employed to pre-concentrate minerals using water, reducing or eliminating the need for less environmentally friendly processing techniques such as flotation. Conventional gravity recovery devices however, operate in a 1 g environment with limited efficiency in the separation of fine particles of heavy and gangue minerals. More recently developed centrifugal concentrators operate in a multi-g environment and enable finer heavy minerals to be recovered, but also exhibit limited separation efficiency due to the separations being based on solid particle mass differentials. Further enhancement of gravity separation has been achieved using the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig (KCJ), which also operates in a multi-g environment, but separates minerals on the basis of specific gravity differentials, using 'ragging' media and a pulsation mechanism, which maximises the effect of differential particle accelerations. This enables the efficient separation/recovery of minerals down to a particle size of ~6 ¦m and/or separation of minerals with a low specific gravity differential. This paper presents details on the principals of operation of the KCJ, recent improvements in the technology and recent developments in modular KCJ plants, as well as some KCJ application areas, which offer smarter, environmentally friendly processing opportunities for the mineral processing industry.

This paper will attempt to clarify today’s regulatory picture by identifying some of the regulatory “hotspots” and “pitfalls” that affect individuals and companies involved in the sale, transportation, distribution and use of explosives.

This is the seventh annual tabulation of royalty information. It is also the first year in which some data have been deleted to make room for new data. The concept of royalties evolved from a time when the government owned all of the land, including mines, to the situation where free miners won the right to claim minerals but paid a portion of their production to the royal treasury. Today, a mineral royalty is a payment to the owner of the mineral rights for the privilege of producing the mineral commodity. However, some people incorrectly believe that the selling price and the royalty are the same thing. The contract between the owner (lessor) and the mining company (lessee) is the mineral lease. Some clauses that are common to mineral leases include: identification of property, granting clause, reservations, definitions, royalty rate, taxes and title, indemnity, termination, inspection, assignability, successors, and reclamation. There often are variations in royalty rates for a given commodity that reflect differences in location, quality, market conditions or public versus private ownership. History In the time of ancient Rome, the government owned the mining properties by virtue of conquest. It would lease the mines to favored citizens who would pay rent to the State. Various conditions of sovereign ownership of both land and mineral rights continued in Europe until the Renaissance. As the laws evolved for land ownership by private citizens, the concept that minerals belonged to the State (King, Crown, sovereign) continued until about the 15th century. Free miners challenged the notion of sovereign ownership and won the right to discover and claim minerals. But a portion of their production had to be paid to the sovereign - a royalty. So, the original concept of a mineral royalty was a tax on production that was due to the Crown or Church. The term mineral royalty, as it is known today, is a payment to the owner of the mineral rights (formerly the royal owner) for the privilege of mining and producing the mineral commodity. The owner of the mineral rights, the lessor, and the mine operator, the lessee, enter into an agreement to mine the property. The agreement is the lease. While this concept is common, there are some who do not understand that the royalty is a portion of production paid to the owner as agreed on in the lease document. This author has seen reports where the selling price of a commodity has been quoted as the royalty. ("They get 70 cents a ton royalty at their pit and the guy down the road only has a 65 cent royalty.") These reports have been authored by people not familiar with the mining industry. Lease clauses In addition to the amount to be paid the lessor, there are several other items to be addressed in the lease agreement. The following list may not be all inclusive, but briefly describes most of the common clauses any good mining lease should contain. Identification: This opening clause names the owner (lessor) and the operator (lessee), the address of each, and gives the legal description of the property. Granting clause: This part of the lease gives the time period or duration of the agreement and information about renewal periods. It also has language about the exclusive right of the lessee to mine the property. Reservations: If the owner wants to exclude any portion of the property or set some specific conditions about the operation, there needs to be a clause that describes these reservations. Definitions: This section should address some of the technical terms that the lessor may find confusing - short tons versus cubic yards, dollars versus percentage of average selling price, any escalator indices such as consumer price index or producer price index, and material mined versus material sold. Royalty: This section spells out what the royalty rate will be, how often it will be paid, if there is an annual minimum, the pay dates, and how the records will be kept. This section also describes the conditions under which the lessee is exempt from the annual minimum - natural disasters, strikes, governmental actions, or other causes referred to as force majeure. Taxes and title: The lease needs to identify who is responsible for the property taxes, severance taxes (if applicable), and other taxes that relate to the mining activity - taxes on equipment, improvements, or stockpiles. This is a good place in the lease for the owner to certify his ownership of the property and its mineral rights and also certify that no other leases are in effect. The lessees may want language that allows them to pay mortgages or other debts on the property to keep their lease in effect. Indemnity: This portion of the lease identifies that the lessee assumes the risks for lessee's mining operation. Lessor should expect indemnification by the lessee through standard insur¬ance policies - workers compensation, liability and property damage. Termination: Both the lessor and lessee want language that will allow them to terminate the lease. Zincor uses a Roast-Leach-Electrowinning circuit to process zinc sulphide concentrates. It also processes zinc oxide fume, originating from a slag smelting operation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Zincor achieved an average zinc recovery of 90.3% during the period January 2006 to May 2007. The bulk of the losses occurred in the iron and lead silver residues, both as soluble and un-dissolved losses. The un-dissolved losses in the iron residue constituted around 33% of the total zinc lost from the circuit, and were largely attributed to the presence of zinc-ferrite in the calcine used for neutralization during iron removal. As part of Zincor?s continuous improvement programme, the un-dissolved zinc losses in the iron residue were targeted by: the partial replacement of calcine with zinc oxide fume (from the DRC); and the preferential use of ?low-ferrite content calcine? as neutralizing agents in the iron removal circuit. These initiatives, coupled with other operational factors, resulted in a marked improvement in recovery to 92.6% during June to December 2007. The zinc oxide fume, directly fed to the circuit, required investigation of the halide rejection capacity of the Zincor circuit. Rejection of chloride via the magnesium bleed operation was considered adequate. Fluoride was mainly rejected via the iron (~70%) and lead silver (~27%) residues. Fluoride rejection via the lead silver residue varied significantly, probably as a result of variations in the sparingly soluble CaF2 content in the feed. The mechanism for fluoride rejection in the iron residues is uncertain. The fluoride rejection capacity of the Zincor iron residue (comprising of mainly jarosites, schwertmannite and ferrihydrite) at 2 ? 4 mg/L F in solution, was estimated at 0.14 ? 0.19 kgF/tFe residue.

Late in 1974 at a meeting with the Cedar Coal Company in Chelyan, West Virginia, a very definite requirement for an automatic heat sensing fire suppression system for the type coal augers used in their mine was revealed. Several fires had been experienced, and while equipment loss was a consideration, operator safety was also a concern. As of that date no one had developed an automatic system specifically for fire suppression on coal augers. II. EQUIPMENT DEVELOPMENT As a result of the above meeting, an unsolicited proposal was made to the Bureau on March 1, 1975, and a contract was issued to provide the following services: A. Determine and define fire hazard problem on Compton Coal Auger. B. Modify or otherwise mike a Lease "AFEX" system suitable for protecting the fire hazard area developed in paragraph "A". C. Make installation of "AFEX" system. D. Monitor installation for reliability for a period of 90 days after installation. C. ConJurt a simulated fire test to determine effectiveness on system.
