The Greater Vancouver Regional District completed installation of a 2.5 Km long, 2400 mm diameter concrete sewer in Delta, British Columbia in 2000. The sewer traverses through area of peat and soft ground. The ground investigation along the sewer alignment consisted of cone penetration tests and auger drilling with standard penetration tests. The gravity sewer is supported on precast, pretensioned spun concrete piles imported from Malaysia which had never been used for a major project in North America. The capacities of the installed piles were tested using pile driving analyzer (PDA) and three static load tests. A total of 46 PDA tests were carried out during pile installation. The paper describes the pile vetting process the owner went through prior to accepting the piles for use in the project and performance of the piles. It compares the pile capacity estimated from the PDA tests with that estimated from soil mechanics methods using data from cone penetration tests and standard penetration tests. The ranges of estimated capacities calculated by different methods are discussed from design capacity selection considerations.

To achieve an efficient separation in the flotation process, valuable particles need to be selectively segregated from the gangue while utilising a minimum number of flotation stages. TodayÆs existing flotation technologies are effective for fine particle size classes; however, limitations due to particle buoyancy and bubble-particle detachment restrict the effectiveness of traditional flotation approaches on coarser particles. As a result, flotation circuits are generally configured to process only fine particle size classes in order to maximise recovery in the primary stages. Eriez has invented a novel flotation technology, the HydroFloat, which overcomes these limitations by carrying-out flotation in a dense, fluidised-bed medium allowing for the recovery of coarse particles (>0.250 mm). Over the last 15 years, this technology has been successfully applied to industrial minerals with several full-scale units installed to recover particles up to and exceeding 3 mm diameter in primary flotation circuits. This paper includes discussions on the history of this technology, process theory, existing applications, and a review of recent sulphide-based laboratory test work conducted for Newcrest mining and others. Benefits of this approach, such as improved recovery, low energy consumption and reduced reagent addition will also be reviewed.CITATION:Kohmuench, J, Thanasekaran, H and Seaman, B, 2013. Two small coral islands in the Pacific Ocean, situated close under the equator, and formerly classed among the Line Islands, have, during the last three or four years risen into prominence owing to the valuable deposits of phosphate of lime discovered on them.The deposits of Ocean and Pleasant Islands are under the control of the Pacific Islands Company (1902) Limited, of London and, Sydney, and the high grade of the phosphate, together with the exceptionally favourable facilities for mining this mineral, of which there are several millions of tons on these islands, give this company advantages which enable them to command the Australian and New Zealand markets, and also to make large contracts with Japan and other countries. Both islands, as far as surface indications are concerned, are entirely constructed of coral, with phosphate on the top from the highest points to the present sea level, there being no sign of volcanic rocks, with the exception of a few pieces of drift pumice on the coast.Banaba (Paanopa according to. the Admiralty charts), also known as Ocean Island, was discovered in 1804. When a collapse in its services shaft caused rapid gas build up and its premature closure in. 1951, the Blackwater Mine at Wiauta was in full production with significant ore reserves yet to be mined. A total of nearly 23 tonnes of gold was produced from the mine during its 44 year life. It was New ZealandÆs deepest underground mine, producing gold from an extensive sub-vertical mineralised quartz reef that averaged 0.6 m in width. Mining was by stoping between adits and short shafts, latterly with the main mine access through the 840 m deep Prohibition shaft. Macraes Mining Company Ltd are presently investigating the possibility of reopening the mine. This paper outlines a preliminary assessment of the main geotechnical factors for achieving the reopening, using recent exploration and old mine information. The greywacke host rock mass in the vicinity of the quartz reef has been evaluated using both these sources, and the paper discusses how the geological structure, intact and rock mass strengths, the rock mass defects, in situ stresses, and groundwater inflows may effect the reopening and support of the prohibition shaft, the excavation methods and support for a new supplementary shaft, and the likely excavation and support requirements for working adits and stopes in the rejuvenated mine.

Wireless sensor networks and wireless communication systems have become indispensable in underground mines. Wireless sensor networks are being used for better real-time data acquisition from ground monitoring devices, gas sensors, and mining equipment, whereas wireless communication systems are needed for locating and communicating with workers. Conventional methods like wireline communication have proved to be ineffective in the event of mine hazards such as roof falls, fires etc. Before implementation of any wireless system, the variable path loss indices for different workplaces should be determined. This helps in better signal reception and sensor node localization, and also improves the method by which miners carrying the wireless devices are tracked. This paper proposes a novel method for determining the parameters of a suitable radio propagation model, which is illustrated with the results of a practical experiment carried out in an underground coal mine in southern India. The path loss indices, along with other essential parameters for accurate localization, have been determined using the XBee modules and ZigBee protocol at 2.4 GHz frequency.

Six years ago it was my responsibility to give the presidential address, and now that privilege has come my way again. On that occasion we were gathered atWhyalla and I took the opportunity of putting before members some observations on the problems we then faced in Australia, and some gains we had been able to chalk up during those early postwar years. You may recall that we were then just beginning to emerge from the difficulties of postwar reconstructions - of fuel and power shortages, and a grossly inadequate manpower for the tasks facing us. The expansion of manufacturing industry in Australia greatly stimulated by wartime activities, and by the postwar developments of many institutions - ran ahead of the supporting services and of the supply of labour to do thejobs. For many industries this unfortunate state of affairs had meant operating at rates well below their installed capacities and therefore levels of output insufficient for Australia's rapidly growing needs. When I last spoke to you these problems were still with us, though their intensity was beginning to lessen as a result of vigorous efforts by industry and governments to reduce them. But I must confess that my thoughts on that occasion were full of those problems and of the effect they were having on the iron and steel industry of this country-of the coal shortage, the labour shortage, and the many other difficulties we were then faced with - and all at a time when the stepping up of our postwar expansion programme was of vital concern to all of us.What a different picture it is six years later! The authors of this paper have a combined construction experience of 70 years. They have served as engineers and managers on projects throughout the United States and Canada. Approximately 50 shafts have been sunk under their direct and daily participation. Several shafts have been selected from each of their experiences and have been briefly summarized here. SHALLOW SHAFT SINKING Sinking shallow shafts in highly urbanized areas adds an additional set of problems to those encountered in normal sinking operations. During the time between July, 1975 and early 1981, a series of shafts were sunk for The Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority. All of these were located along the "A" line, starting soon after the route departed from its path along Connecticut Avenue, proceeding to Wisconsin Avenue and then along Wisconsin Avenue to the city line at Western Avenue. (See WMATA System Map, Figure 1) The first three shafts were subcontracted from Morrison-Knudsen & Associates, Contract A9a, in July, 1975. A new office complex is being constructed within 25m of the Hudson River in New Jersey. The project, about 140 m by 100 m, will include 4 basements under the entire footprint. The perimeter was to be secured by a 0.8 m thick diaphragm wall, laterally supported by high capacity tieback anchors to rock. Columns were to be supported on footings or piers to rock at a nominal bearing pressure of 3.8 MPa at depths up to 17m. Although some variation in rock quality was observed in borings, a substantial vertical seam of weathered and/or decomposed rock, 1 to 2 meters wide by as much as 8 meters deep, was encountered during construction necessitating field redesign. In some locations the seam dipped below more competent rock. Footings were redesigned for support on drilled caissons, or soft rock was excavated and replaced with concrete necessitating a reduction in bearing pressure of the footings by one half.

Western Coalfield?s Tandsi Mine, has difficult support conditions and a history of roof falls, resulting in mining roadway widths and depths being restricted for safety reasons. Rock Mechanics Technology Ltd was contracted to improve the support system to allow the introduction of mechanised room and pillar mining. The introduction of a ?world best practice? bolting system resulted in major improvement in roof stability, allowing mining restrictions to be lifted and Tandsi to become one of the first two Indian mines to introduce a mechanised continuous miner system. The first year?s production was some six times previous levels. Because of the improvement in the support system, RMT was also able to design a partial de-pillaring system suitable for the Tandsi continuous miner districts together with the introduction of monitoring procedures and guidelines to maintain safe roof support conditions. In situ monitoring of pillar and roof behaviour was undertaken as the first pillars were extracted to confirm the design. De-pillaring operations have also proved highly productive, and to date there has been no associated support related major injury or dangerous occurrence. The success of this project demonstrates the potential for mechanised room and pillar mining in India.

A new minerals initiative to increase the level of understanding of New Zealand's mineral resources and to promote the development of minerals began earlier in the year in a partnership pilot-project between Crown Minerals and the Institute for Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS). The project aims to gather a set of comprehensive geoscientific data and build a series of digital GIS packages to highlight New Zealand's mineral prospectivity. The pilot study was carried out at a regional scale, and is focussed on mesothermal gold mineralisation in the South Island. A significant amount of geological data and information was sourced from open file technical reports held by Crown Minerals and from various databases held by GNS and has now been compiled into a single GIS dataset, which will soon be made freely available to interested parties. In addition to this comprehensive data compilation, prospectivity modelling using Weights of Evidence techniques was undertaken to highlight those areas likely to contain ore deposits. It is clear from this study that the South Island of New Zealand remains highly prospective for mesothermal gold mineralisation. Many of the highly prospective areas, which also contain historic mine workings, remain open for exploration. The study not only highlights these areas, but also other areas where the potential for similar mineralisation exists, in all likelihood with no surface expression. The study has also highlighted the value of many of the open-file technical reports held by Crown Minerals and the need to carry out additional studies using this and other available data at a more detailed level, possibly as the basis for a web-based minerals information system.

The study of gas emitted from face coal samples at the coal face is part of an investigation of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas. Normally, seam gas essentially comprises methane of which the origin in the metamorphism of coal is undoubted. The origin of other gases sometimes occurring in high proportion in seam gas, particularly carbon dioxide, is more controversial. A simple meter for rapidly assessing gas in coal was developed. Tests with the meter enabled comparisons of seam gas in face coal at some outbursting and nonoutbursting mines, and under various working conditions. The varying results of widespread testing suggest certain trends, including some prospect of recognising outbursting potential at the coal face.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this work is identification of differences in gas condition between coals subject to instantaneous outbursts and coals which have not outburst, and between faces of coals which will and which will not subsequently outburst. Any comparative test should be conducted right at the coal face on coal about to be worked and the results of testing should be available after a short period. Moreover, the method and the comparison of results should require no special skill, and be well within the capacity of junior mine officials. Any consistent relation between gas condition and subsequent mining conditions - outbursting or not might be valuable in prediction of outbursts.INSTANTANEOUS OUTBURSTSInstantaneous outbursts (Hargraves, 1958) , are largely unpredictable and unaccountable ejections of coal (up to 5,000 tons) and gas (up to 5,000,000 cu.ft.) from a standing coal face. Representative samples of the hydrothermal vein deposits of the bulk complex sulphide ore deposit, 10 km south of Ishiagu, in Ebonyin State, South Eastern part of Nigeria were collected from two small scale mining companies. The samples were mixed and successively crushed in a jaw crusher and cone crusher, and ground in a rod mill. Characterization was carried out with SEM, EDX, XRD, XRF and ICP-OES. Mineralogical analysis revealed the presence of sphalerite, galena, siderite, pyrite, quartz and chalcopyrite. X-ray Diffractometry showed that sphalerite mineral in the ore occurs as sphalerite ferrous with varied percentage of Zn and Fe within the various sizes while chalcopyrite occurs as a chalcopyrite group mineral with chemical formula Cu2MnSnS4. Results of the elemental analysis showed variations in elemental composition within the different sizes.

Video technology coupled with data logging exposure monitors have been used to evaluate worker exposure to different types of contaminants. However, previous application of this technology used a stationary video camera to record the worker?s activity while the worker wore some type of contaminant monitor. These techniques are not applicable to mobile workers in the mining industry because of their need to move around the operation while performing their duties and tasks. The Helmet-CAM is a recently developed exposure assessment tool that integrates a person-wearable video recorder with a data logging dust monitor that are worn by a miner in a backpack, safety belt, or safety vest to identify areas or job tasks of elevated exposure. After a miner performs his or her job while wearing the unit, the video and dust exposure data files are downloaded to a computer and then merged together through a NIOSH-developed computer software program called EVADE (Enhanced Video Analysis of Dust Exposure). By providing synchronized playback of the merged video footage and dust exposure data, the EVADE software allows for the assessment and identification of key work areas and processes, as well as work tasks that significantly impact a worker?s personal respirable dust exposure. The Helmet-CAM technology has been tested at a number of metal/nonmetal mining operations and has proven to be a very valuable assessment tool. Mining companies wishing to use this technique can purchase a commercially available video camera and an instantaneous dust monitor to obtain the necessary data, and the NIOSH-developed EVADE software will be available for download at no cost on the NIOSH website.

OPTICAL PROPERTIES of U.S. coals of differing rank have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines, for about 20 years. These investigations have been remade to further the development of an objective basis for petrographic analysis of coal and to add to knowledge of the structure and composition of coal and coal components by determining their optical constants in various regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Various experimental techniques have been used in these studies, including determination of reflectance from bulk specimens and transmittance of thin and ultrathin sections, interferometry, electron microscopy, and election diffraction. Similar studies leave also been made of graphite, the end product of coal metamorphism. The bureau of Mines conducted the first U.S. investigation of reflectance properties of coal components, laying the foundation for petrographic analysis based on arbitrary reflectance classes and for automated reflectance analysis of coals. Optical constants of coals of differing rank and of graphite have been determined in the ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectrum. Maxima in the optical constants of graphite were observed in the ultraviolet region and were interpreted to be related to transitions of electrons between the valence and conduction bands. Similar maxima for coals, especially high-rank coals, appeared to be characteristic of the presence of graphitelike layers. A special application of optical theory to absorbing, anisotropic materials like graphite and high-rank coals has been developed. Electron microscopic and electron diffraction studies of coals have revealed various ultrafine structures in coal components and have shown the evolution of an oriented, crystalline graphite structure in high-rank coals.

"SynopsisThe last commodities supercycle (2003 to 2011) was characterized by a belief in volume at any cost, where absolute output was deliberately prioritized over productivity considerations. This practice fuelled overoptimistic forecasting and planning, which in turn contributed to the economic crisis that followed. The sudden collapse of commodity prices has resulted in mining companies scrambling to find the right balance between optimizing current operations and preserving sufficient flexibility to grasp future opportunities. The runaway costs of building and operating mines have almost squeezed out profit margins, while lower ore grades are inflating production costs. Mining companies therefore need to look at the business with fresh eyes, and develop strategies to attract equity capital as traditional approaches are simply not working anymore. This is especially so in the context of a dwindling investor base that continues to demand greater returns, despite a significantly lower appetite for risk. This paper revisits the micro-economic concepts and demonstrates how pressure from shareholders to prioritize output contributed to spiralling costs and value destruction. Practical techniques are described to model cost curves to optimize a Mineral Resource endowment and address the need to rightbalance a business and preserve agility.IntroductionHenry Lazenby (2014) for the Mining Weekly writes, ‘Bruised and battered, the global mining industry today is undergoing a sea change. Practices and policies that might have worked wonders in the past are not as relevant today, and new approaches to running profitable mining operations need to be found.’ One significant practice the mining industry had during the last commodities supercycle (2003 to 2011) was chasing volume at any cost; absolute output was deliberately prioritized over productivity considerations (Goldsmith, 2013). This is often regarded as the result of the were in pursuit of growing their output at all costs in a high commodity price environment.’ Lee Hodgkinson, KPMG’s Canadian mining industry leader and quoted by Lazenby, says that ‘mining companies are now trying to find the right balance between optimizing current operations and preserving their agility to grasp future opportunities. The successful installation of long piles driven into very dense sands relies on the occurrence of the reduction in local friction with increased pile embedment, a phenomenon known as ?friction fatigue?. The underlying mechanisms controlling friction fatigue are poorly understood, with some design methods including an adjustment for the influence of pile diameter while others do not. This paper back calculates the installation resistance of 0.356m to 2m (14in to 78in) diameter open ended piles driven into very dense sands using wave equation analyses. Cone penetration test data are used to link soil properties to installation resistance. The study illustrates consistent interpretation of a variety of case histories of open ended piles driven in very dense sands using newly developed analysis techniques and normalized parameters. Results provide information on methods for incorporating friction fatigue into drivability studies as well as a discussion of mechanisms related to pipe pile installation resistance in sandy soils.

The tracking of ore through process hold-ups such as stockpiles has been traditionally been difficult to achieve. The inability to pinpoint the exact source in the mine of material that is feeding a processing plant has led to inefficient mine-mill reconciliation processes. In addition, a lack of understanding of the behaviour of ore in process hold-ups such as bins and stockpiles often leads to poor predictions of plant performance and to poor reconciliation of this to the orebody.This paper reports on two short case studies. One case study addresses tracking ore from various parts of two mines to the concentrator. The other follows synthetic particles through the coarse ore stockpile. Both studies use radio-frequency identification (RFID) tracer technology. The paper concludes by discussing general strategies for implementation of such concepts into mine-mill metal accounting and reconciliation systems. As shown in this paper, reliable ore tracking systems will allow much more effective mine-mill reconciliations as well as the ability to model process hold-ups with regard to size by residence time distributions. This should, in turn, allow metallurgists to have a better understanding of the size and grade of material that will report to the plant at different process hold-up (eg stockpile) conditions.

An average of 13 mine workers are killed each year by being run over or pinned by mobile mining equipment. At surface mines, these accidents commonly involve large dump trucks that drive over a smaller vehicle or a person that is in the dump truck’s blind spot. One method of detecting a person or another vehicle in a blind spot is to use some type of sensor technology such as radar or radio-frequency identification (RFID). Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health tested a number of commercially available and experimental sensors that monitor obstacles in a vehicle’s blind spots. None of the sensors had been previously applied to the specific problem of rigid-frame surface mining trucks. This report documents the procedures and results of tests conducted after RFID and radar systems were mounted on a 50-ton-capacity dump truck. It was determined that both RFID and radar technology show promise for detecting obstacles in the blind spots of mining equipment; however, more development work is needed to meet the unique requirements of mining equipment and the mine environment.

Electrochemical Behaviour of Massive Chaclopyrite Bioleached Electrodes in Presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus caldus In this work, the monitoring of bacterial and chemical dissolution of massive chaclopyrite was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV); the mineral surface was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the elements were examined by Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX). The electrolyte employed for the electrochemical tests was the medium used to bioleaching the electrodes (3.0 g/L (NH4)2+SO4, 0.5 g/L K2HPO4, 0.5 g/L MgSO4+7H2O and 0.1 g/L Ca(NO3)2).The results showed differences in voltagramms carried out by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus caldus: In bioleached electrodes tested in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, the anodic and cathodic current signals were larger than with Acidithiobacillus caldus. The analysis of CV results allowed attributing the different peaks observed in both the direct and reverse potential scanning to the oxidation of chaclopyrite to a secondary copper mineral (bornite, chalcocite and covellite) and its reduction via different non stoichiometric copper sulphides intermediaries. Surface evidences were observed by SEM, and chemical elements evidences were also investigated by EDAX.
