The mineral industry is an important element in the human environment and in varying degrees contributes to the general standard of living throughout most of the world, both by supplying the basic materials required for heavy industry, transportation, construction, scientific equipment, and many labour saving tools and also by its contribution to the international economy.When projecting population growth and per capita resource utilization against a finite amount of nonrenewable mineral resources, it is apparent that at some future time, if the established trend continues, the supply of industrial minerals will progressively become exhausted according to their relative scarcity and world demand.In one way or another all of nature's mineral resources are used in the sel'vice of man. Some of the products of their manufacture are essential to the survival and further development of our civilization, others are luxuries, desirable but not essential. Marine vessels are essential to maintain a flow of resollrces around the world, and as trade increases the size of the fleet will grow and the quantities of metals needed will be greater.The commodities they transport, may be used in an inefficient or extravagant manner causing unnecessary depletion which may adversely affect the activities of future generations. An example that comes readily to mind is fuel oil, the international transport of which uses a vast tanker fleet. When refined, large quantities of motor spirit are used in motor vehicles. The U.S.A. alone uses 70 billion gallons annually in the 90,000,000 automobiles in use.Much of this is used in private cars-of which there is one for every 2'3 people-for transport between home and city. "The risk management objective of the AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has seldom been systematically investigated in the literature up to the authors’ knowledge. Risk is defined in the Australian Standard on Risk Management (AS/NZS 4360:2004), as “the chance of something happening that will have an impact on objectives”. The simplified economic analysis performed in this paper has lead to define “something happening” as measurement non-representativity and “impact on objectives” as NSR loss from the optimal NSR. This has pinpointed a missing link being the establishment of a relation between NSR in flotation plants and measurement representativity. The proposed framework, referred to as the total cost of representativity, answers the previously unanswered question of how much accuracy/reproducibility is fit for purpose in a given flotation plant. Authors readily acknowledge that it is way easier to assess the cost of accuracy/reproducibility than the cost of inaccuracy/irreproducibility. However, this exercise not only answers previously unanswered questions but also establishes an essential link with operational excellence. This paper exposes why such operational excellence could neither be attained nor proved without a state of the art metal accounting system. This should impact not only how metal accounting systems are audited/designed/refactored, but also how flotation plants are designed.IntroductionBecause representative metal accounting is a vital source of information for the financial accounts of a mining/metallurgical company, the need for a code on metal accounting was recognized in 2001 and a team was formed in 2003, under the sponsorship of several major mining houses, to produce such a code. Coal samples taken from the No. 2 Seam and No. 4 Seam in a South African colliery were tested in a rotary triboelectrostatic separator. The two-stage triboelectrostatic separation results using the -177 µm size fraction reduced No. 2 Seam coal containing about 30.4 per cent ash to a clean product of 8.9 per cent and 13.1 per cent ash with combustible recoveries of 9.6 per cent and 30.7 per cent respectively. The same separation approach on No. 4 seam feed coal, which contained 36 per cent ash, produced a clean coal product with 10.8 per cent ash at a combustible recovery of 6.0 per cent. Petrographic tests show a significant improvement in the vitrinite content and a reduction in visible minerals encountered when using the triboelectrostatic separator, with about 53 per cent vitrinite reporting to the clean fraction for No. 2 Seam compared to the feed content of 21 per cent, and a 54 per cent vitrinite in the clean No. 4 Seam from a feed content of 21 per cent. Significant sulphur reductions were also observed after separation in both coal samples, with a better separation in the second-stage coal products.

The furnace was commissioned in 1973 and produces a high-grade sulphide matte containing nickel, copper and cobalt, which is shipped to refineries in Zimbabwe and Norway for further processing. This paper outlines the recent process improvements and plant expansions that have resulted in a capacity increase from 40 000 to 60 000 tons per annum of metal production.

 The Southern Alps is an active oblique collisional zone which has a characteristic wedge-shaped geometry above a low-angle ductile shear zone. The Main Divide region is a relatively low strain zone above this ductile shear zone, and is _deforming principally along steeply dipping strike-slip faults. Extensional fractures are common at a high angle to the regional structural trend. These steeply dipping structures act as conduits for gold-bearing fluids from depth, and small mesothermal gold deposits have formed at several structural levels including the near-surface region. Gold has also been deposited in a meteoricmetamorphic fluid mixing zone near a conductive thermal anomaly on the western slopes of the mountains. These various gold deposits and their well-constrained structural and tectonic settings can be used as analogues for larger, deeper-eroded mesothermal gold deposits in the Mesozoic Otago Schist belt. High level Miocene veins in NW Otago have formed beneath the main divide of the initiating Southern Alps. Late metamorphic gold-bearing veins formed as fluid escaped from the ductile-deforming crustal root beneath Mesozoic mountains.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Watershed tungsten deposit is located in the Hodgkinson Province of north Queensland, Australia. The deposit is hosted by Siluro-Devonian flysch-type meta-sediments of the Hodgkinson Formation, which were subjected to four major deformation events. Mineralisation has occurred syn- to post-D4 and is related to the intrusion of S-type granitoids of the Permian Whypalla Supersuite.Watershed is located within a regional NW–SE-striking melange zone composed of brecciated and intermixed arenites and shales. The major NW–SE-striking Tullah fault zone is situated in close proximity to the east of the deposit.The Watershed deposit occurs within a tightly folded upright anticline with NW-plunging fold axis. The anticline contains a major package of coarse-grained to conglomeratic arenite, which harbours the Watershed mineralisation. Several alteration styles occur within the arenites, of which Fe-poor calc-silicate alteration dominated by clinozoisite/epidote is the most significant. Less widespread but locally important alteration styles comprise garnet-dominated calc-silicate alteration, albitisation and sericitisation. The arenites are enveloped by unmineralised carbonaceous shales and shale breccias.Tungsten mineralisation occurs solely as molybdenum-poor scheelite and can be found as three styles: disseminated mineralisation in calc-silicate altered arenites, vein-style mineralisation with quartz-albite-scheelite veins and minor but high-grade mineralisation in albitised felsic dykes.Contact metamorphic rocks and geophysical data indicate the proximity of an underlying granitic body. It is believed that this granitic body was the main driver of the hydrothermal system generating the Watershed deposit. An early mineralisation stage caused the selective calc-silicate alteration of the arenites, while a second stage caused the vein-style high-grade mineralisation. The folded shales enveloping the arenites worked as an effective barrier that kept the mineralising fluids in a confined rock volume.The scheelite mineralisation at Watershed is open to depth, with a granite-hosted porphyry or greisen-style mineralisation anticipated below the current resource.CITATION:Griessmann, M and Williamson, J, 2015. In response to numerous requests for information as to the status of internal-combustion mine locomotives of the Diesel type that use heavy or nonvolatile oil for fuel, with special reference to their safe use in coal mines, the United States Bureau of Mines is issuing this t port. Data were obtained on application of such locomotives to coal mining only in Belgium, France, Germany, and Great Britain. The locomotives are used in coal mining in other countries, as well as in potash, iron, and other kinds of mining, but their chief development has been in coal mining in Germany, France, and Belgium. Recently popular interest in the Diesel type of engine for motive purposes was aroused in this country by the successful application of Diesel engines to railroad locomotives hauling fast transcontinental trains, and, according to published statements, at a low cost of fuel per mile of run.

The surface manifestation of underground mining usually entails five distinct types of surface movements, which can affect or damage surface structures, facilities and renewable resources. These movements developing at the surface can be described by (Bell, 1975; Bhattacharya and Singh, 1984): - vertical displacement, i.e. subsidence, - horizontal displacements, - slope or tilt, i.e. the derivative of the vertical displacement with respect to the horizontal distance, - curvature, i.e. the second derivative of the vertical displacement with respect to the horizontal distance, and, - horizontal strain, i.e. the derivative of the horizontal displacement with respect to the horizontal distance.

The Building Research Establishment installed a base load cell in a driven cast-in-place pile prior to it being tested under vertical load. The monitored base loads were found to be significantly less than could have been predicted by current design methods. The less than expected capacity was attributed to the drilling out procedure. An electro-level system installed in a second similarly formed pile, provided detailed information on the performance of the pile under lateral load. The information obtained was used to check several current design methods for laterally loaded piles. The findings show the potential dangers of attempting to improve design parameters from only limited performance data.

Aggregate resources consist of sand and gravel, and crushed stone. They are large-tonnage, bulk-minable mineral commodities that are used in construction and industrial activities (Tepordei, 1999, 2001).Rates of aggregate production, use and mine permit approval in the mid-Atlantic region differ by population density. These rates are influenced by economic and human factors, such as demand, costs, land availability and community opposition. In some areas, the local availability of aggregate is limited. This is due to the lack of suitable local source materials for aggregate, the loss of potential high-quality aggregate resource production sites by preemptive land development and restrictive zoning (resource sterilization), and the difficulty of developing and permitting production sites for aggregate.

Project cost control procedures and computer systems have enjoyed a successful and simple relationship over the past decade, thanks primarily to the proliferation of portable computers or PC's. Prior to the introduction of this technology, project control was largely a manual and somewhat onerous task of historical data compilations, with little time available for dynamic forecasting, staged planning, or pre-emptive cost control. Automated systems developed during this era were resident on "Heavy Iron" or mainframe computers and were expensive to maintain and operate. Use of these early systems was limited to large engineering, construction, and industrial concerns with the economies of scale and funding required for their successful application. Systems were either designed for critical path analysis or task scheduling, but rarely integrated with the other, much less cost control.

The Bureau of Mines estimated the potential availability of tungsten from 57 mines and deposits in 19 market economy countries. The tungsten resources of China and the U.S.S.R. were also estimated. This resulted from an evaluation of tonnage-cost relationships indicating the quantity of tungsten available as ammonium paratungstate (APT), artificial and natural scheelite, and ferrotungsten at various average total costs of production including 0- and 15-pct rates of return on invested capital. The evaluated deposits contain 1.2 million metric tons (t) of recoverable WO3, of which approximately 52,000 t of AEYT can be produced at the January 1983 market price of $5.37/lb, 89,000 t of natural and artificial scheelite at a market price of $3.63/lb, and 1,700 t of ferrotungsten at $5.61/lb of tungsten. An annual availability analysis indicates that by the early 1990's new deposit discoveries, development of known prospects, or expansions of producing mines will be necessary to meet projected tungsten demand.

The smelting of the Broken Hill lead concentrates at the Broken Hill Asso,ciated Smelters produced, among other products, approximately 4,900 ounces of gold and 8,800,000 ounces of silver during the year ending June 30th, 1938. The following table shows the actual amounts of gold per ton of lead concentrate produced during this period at the important mines. The total gold in the period is calculated from the number of tons of lead concentrates produced, and by comparison with the production' of silver, shows thatthere is no constant relation between the amounts of gold and silver.The fact that no gold is seen during milling, even when gravity concentrating tables are employed, signifies that the gold does not occur as occasional coarse particles.Further, as the values increase considerably in the flotation slime, it can be inferred that the gold occurs as minute inclusions in one or more of the minerals in the lead concentrates.The four most abundant minerals in the lead concentrate are galena, zinc blende, chalcopyrite, and...

Historically, the selection of mining sequence for multiple seam conditions has been based on many factors other than ground control considerations and minimization of interaction effects. Today, numerous operations are finding themselves mining above existing or abandoned operations, some of which exhibit large scale caving, pressure arches and subsidence troughs. Development of design criteria for the upper seam that would alleviate damage due to lower seam interaction effects can contribute substantially to the safety and productivity of many mining operations. The primary objective of this re search has been to identify methods of improving ground control conditions in the upper seam when mining through either passive or active subsidence waves. These methods concentrate on improved ground control practices for the upper seam, rather than reducing the amount of subsidence in the upper seams by improved practices in the lower seam. Design factors such as pillar size, pillar and opening orientation relative to the subsidence trough, offsetting intersections, and different support methods have been studied for the upper seam in a variety of typical geologic environments. Analysis has demonstrated criteria for ameliorating negative interaction effects and facillitating design in the superincumbent seam.

The two candidates in the upcoming presidential election in the United States each say that they have their own solution to the nation?s energy problems - solutions that will increase the amount of energy available, lessen the nation?s dependence on foreign sources and reduce the amount of pollution released to the atmosphere. Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama and Republican candidate Sen. John McCain both advocate research funding for coal-to-liquids and clean coal technologies. McCain also supports increased oil and gas drilling offshore. And Obama has even made some noises in that direction, although his plan leans heavily on the increased use of renewable energy sources. The energy debate is not new to this election. Congress and whichever party is in the White House has for years been trying to craft a comprehensive energy policy. One difference in this latest debate is that the increased use of nuclear energy has gained more attention. Current President George W. Bush has said he favors the increased use of nuclear power as part of the nation?s energy package. And McCain said he supports the building of more nuclear power plants. Obama has not said much about that. The American public is also showing signs of changing its stance on nuclear energy. To be sure, images of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl are still alive in some minds. However, the American public has said it wants cheaper energy and they want it produced more cleanly. With nuclear, the nation can have both. In the United States, nuclear accounts for slightly less than 20 percent of the electrical power used (see interview with Gary Steele of Energy Fuels on page 27). Globally, that figure is about 15 percent. And there are several nations that derive better than half of their power from nuclear sources. Add to that the world?s increasing need for more energy and the future of nuclear is bright.

Mechanization has been at the core of productivity improvements since the industrial revolution. During the past 20 years, mining has derived spectacular progress from mechanization. In the future, however, mechanization alone will not be enough. In the next few decades, automation will bring about new generations of highly productive and safe machines, with low operating costs. Increased use of new and better technology is generally accepted as the prime factor capable of closing the productivity gap. The productivity gap is the difference between inflation and metal prices. The three S-curves in Fig. I represent the evolution of technology in general, and mining in particular. TI represents incremental changes. the dominant sort of technology changes in the mining industry: - Better drills, electric hydraulic drills vs. pneumatic drills, the drilling rate is twice as fast. - Better steel and bits, to accommodate the higher performance drills. - Improved chemical explosives. - Bigger trucks in open pits.

This paper describes the preliminary design of the fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnels along State Route 24 in Oakland, California. The paper focus is on two major aspects of the project: initial support system design and seismic design. The initial support system was designed based on the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).NATM provides the required flexibility to accommodate the variable ground conditions in the weak, folded, and faulted rock along the alignment. The seismic design provides a final lining system that meets serviceability requirements for a 1,500 year seismic event with an estimated peak ground acceleration of 1.2g.

"Quantitative information about the quality of metal balance results is often overlooked when making important plant production planning decisions. Not only is this common omission made in a context where many measurements taken in and around mineral processing plants carry significant errors, but it also conflicts with the AMIRA P754 Code of Practice for Metal Accounting. The fact that metal balances are typically published without any indication of data quality may give the wrong impression that the measurements are unquestionably accurate. While it is true that statistical data reconciliation can improve the confidence intervals of redundant variables, there is no data processing technique that brings them down to zero at a finite cost. In this paper, we review the entire data flow, starting from field instruments to metal accounting-based decision-making to show how measurement errors are transmuted into business risks associated with production planning. Necessary conditions for first exposing then quantifying such business risks are stated. Pitfalls to be avoided are also discussed. Finally, a simplified risk assessment and management procedure which considers the quality of metal balance results are applied to a polymetallic mineral processing plant. INTRODUCTION Each and every mineral processing plant has production reporting obligations. In this paper, we are concerned with metal accounting reports (Morrison, 2008) where saleable metal flows and inventories are estimated and published. These metal accounting reports are delivered to a variety of stakeholders who use them for internal management purposes (day-to-day plant production planning, plant operation optimisation, capital spending, etc.) as well as for external management (royalty settlements, tolling agreements, etc.). Hence, there should be no doubt that spotless metal accounting is instrumental to high-quality corporate governance (Gaylard et al., 2014) of mining and metallurgical companies. To this extent, one would have expected industry-endorsed standards to have emerged a long time ago. However, the lack of an accepted set of standard procedures for metallurgical accounting was explicitly recognized as an industry-wide problem only in August 2001 during an SAIMM workshop held in Cape Town, South Africa. Discussions that followed this workshop led to the initiation of the AMIRA Project P754, “Metal Accounting and Reconciliation”, in 2003."
