Regular monitoring of surface deformation over mine sites is important for providing updated information to managers regarding geotechnical risks related to ground instabilities. This is particularly true in cases where unexpected or accelerating movement patterns are observed, as these trends may have implications related to worker safety within active mining environments, as well as continuity of ongoing operations. InSAR is an active remote sensing technique that uses radar satellite imagery to precisely measure ground movement. This technology has started to become a standard tool for monitoring surface stability in many different sectors, including underground and open pit/cut mining applications. In recent years the launch of satellites that collect radar imagery on a more frequent basis, coupled with advances in InSAR processing techniques, has improved both the extent to which movement patterns typical of mining operations can be characterized and the temporal scale on which results can be reported to geotechnical departments. As a result of these developments, InSAR monitoring can now better meet the operational needs of mine sites. An overview of the more recently launched satellites that have a particular relevance to the monitoring of mines is provided, along with an explanation of the InSAR tools that are the most valuable to mine managers and geotechnical engineers. First, broad differences between high resolution X-band imagery and low resolution (but freely available) Sentinel imagery are discussed. Second, the various InSAR tools and their particular applications for different types of mine sites and operations are covered, which include fast delivery deformation maps for short-term reporting, multi-interferometric algorithms for longer-term analyses and rapid movement tracking (RMT) for emergency monitoring or high-risk situations. The ability of the technology to resolve 2D and 3D movement is also touched upon. Practical examples of InSAR application over a variety of mine sites will be presented, as well as surrounding hazards including landslides, to illustrate how InSAR can help provide geotechnical engineers with a picture of surface stability over the full mine site and surrounding areas to help manage risk. OUTOKUMPU, a large copper mine in eastern Finland, has the distinction of being one of the few important mines in the world discovered by a geologist the late Otto Triistedt, of the Geological Sur- vey of Finland, having found the out- clop in 1910 by tracing glacial ore boulders, some of which had been carried as far as fifty kilometres. As the mine had no connection with either railways or waterways and the possibilities of transport were poor, the owners first tried the Hybinette hydrometallurgical process to extract the copper. The raw ore was finely crushed, treated by a sulphatizing roast. and then leached. The resulting solution was electrolyzed, using lead anodes. O aço API 5 CT P110 é amplamente utilizado no setor de petróleo e gás no Brasil devido sua elevada resistência mecânica, contudo ele não possui uma boa resistência a corrosão. Com a descoberta do pré-sal, novos desafios surgem neste setor, tornando necessário o desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias resistentes aos ambientes agressivos que os materiais serão expostos. A aspersão térmica por HVOF se destaca pela obtenção de revestimentos contra corrosão e resistentes ao desgaste com baixa porosidade e com um relativo baixo custo em comparação a outros processos. Dentre os materiais que podem ser aplicados como revestimentos por aspersão térmica, o níquel se destaca pela ótima resistência à corrosão por formar um óxido protetor na superfície. Sendo assim, o presente trabalho tem por objetivo obter e caracterizar revestimentos de níquel obtidos por aspersão térmica HVOF, no aço API 5CT P110. Os revestimentos foram caracterizados morfologicamente por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Foram obtidas curvas de polarização para avaliar o comportamento frente à corrosão e foram realizados ensaios para determinação do coeficiente de atrito. A camada aspergida de níquel apresentou resultados satisfatórios quanto às análises estudadas.

"The resource industries in Canada are facing increasing global competition and stringent environmental regulations. This has made it essential for companies to lower operating costs wherever possible. Electrical energy rep-resents one variable cost that may be better managed and utilized, providing the user with lower operating costs, improved productivity and better yields.The utility industry is also facing changes in the way it must do business. Utilities in North America are facing the prospect of deregulation that will eliminate the monopoly they have traditionally held. This will force them to strive for lower operating costs, to maintain a competitive position and to improve customer ser-vice so as to maintain their customer base.Ontario Hydro has been working with industry for several years. Many opportunities for cost savings have been identified involving energy efficiency, process improvements and the use of new electro technologies. One useful service that the utility can offer industry is to increase the awareness of potential opportunities suited to their operations. This paper will provide an overview of some of the projects that have been implemented and those that are presently being evaluated. An electronic data-base of electro technology applications that is under development will also be described."

Gekko Systems Pty Ltd engaged in the test work, design, manufacturing and commissioning of the pre-concentration plant at Silver Standard Resources Inc’s Pirquitas mine in the north western Jujuy province of Argentina. Testing of the ore at coarse feeds of between 2 and 12mm returned probable recoveries of up to a total of 95% silver into 50% of the mass fed to the InLine Pressure Jigs (IPJ’s). The plant has been designed and built based on the test results to include a preparation screen to bypass the fines that are naturally higher in grade and repulping of the coarse which is then pumped to three parallel trains of 2-stage IPJ roughing-scavenging. The target 50% yield to concentrate passes over a dewatering screen and the solids are returned back to the mill feed conveyor. The IPJ tails are transferred to a dewatering screen and solid rejects are stockpiled off the end of a transfer conveyor. All dewatered underflow products are processed via hydrocyclones to recover dirty water for use back into the IPJ circuit and return entrained fines to the fines bypass line.With the sulphide orebody being processed, the results from operations to date have shown that plant performance is matching the original laboratory sulphide ore testwork data. The objective of the pre-concentration step is to both reject gangue and achieve grades between 300-400g/t Ag to the float circuit as flotation recoveries are maximised within this range. The plant currently achieves overall upgrades of approximately 150% of feed grade with the IPJ only circuit producing an average 180% increase from calculated feed grade.

"Nickel and cobalt are the main value metals in nickel laterite ore. Cyanex 272 is an extractant used to separate nickel from cobalt present in leach solutions. Previous studies demonstrated the extraction of cobalt, magnesium and manganese at pH 5 using Cyanex 272 as extractant, while nickel remained in aqueous solution. However, it is difficult to separate cobalt from a solution containing magnesium and manganese. One possibility to change the metals’ behavior during the solvent extraction process is to change the mixture of extractants used. In order to study the solvent extraction of cobalt from a solution containing manganese, magnesium and nickel, a mixture of two extractants was investigated. Cyanex 272 (CY) and Versatic 10 (VC) were selected as extractants in the organic phase. The extractant concentrations used were: 20% CY; 15% CY, 5% VC; 10% CY, 10% VC; 5% CY, 15% VC; and 20% VC. In all cases, kerosene was used as a diluent, at 80 vol%. The synthetic leach solution used in this study was prepared according to the composition of a typical nickel laterite leach solution. The pH value of the solution used was 5, and the aqueous/organic ratio used in solvent extraction testwork was 1/1. The study has shown that the composition of the organic extractant mixture did not increase cobalt separation.INTRODUCTION Sulfide and laterite deposits are the main sources of nickel. However, production from nickel sulfide ores has been decreasing over the years, relatively speaking, increasing the focus on the exploitation of laterite nickel ores (McDonald & Whittington, 2008). Laterite ore deposits are found in tropical and subtropical regions. A characteristic of laterite ores is the presence of a complex and heterogeneous mixture of metals (Crundwell, Moats, Ramachandran, Robinson, & Davenport, 2011; Georgiou & Papangelakis, 1998; Gupta, 2003; Kesler & Simon, 2015; Moskalyk & Alfantazi, 2002; Oliveira, 1990). Nickel concentrations in laterite ores are typically 1–2% (Dalvi, Bacon, & Osborne, 2004)."

"Teck and Aurubis are working together to commercialize a technology for the processing of copper arsenic sulphide concentrates that is economic and sustainable with regards to the environment and community. The pressure hydrometallurgical approach is a desirable option as mineral extraction and arsenic fixation can take place in a single autoclave vessel. A test work program was carried out where a range of copper concentrates with varying arsenic grades was processed under CESL leach conditions. This paper discusses the stability character (in terms of arsenic) of the resulting residues and their mineralogy. The basic ferric arsenate sulphate phase (BFAS; otherwise known as type 2) was identified as the main arsenic carrier. All CESL residues demonstrated high stability (<1 mg/L As) through a range of aggressive (pH and ORP) environmental leach conditions.INTRODUCTIONArsenic deportment and control in the copper industry needs an integrated approach involving each stage of the value chain, i.e. exploration, mine operation, refining process and mine closure. Teck Resources Limited (Teck), Canada’s largest diversified mining company and Aurubis, Europe’s largest copper producer, have formed a partnership to advance the application of CESL copper-gold technology for the development of high arsenic bearing copper resources (Bruce et al., 2011).Among the options for arsenic control in the metallurgical treatment of copper concentrates is the precipitation of ferric arsenate, which is widely accepted as the most suitable method for stabilizing arsenic (Ferron and Wang, 2003). The pressure hydrometallurgical approach to processing arsenic bearing copper concentrates is a favorable option as mineral extraction and arsenic fixation can take place in a single autoclave vessel. Under CESL pressure leaching conditions (150 °C, 1380 kPa) high copper extraction and arsenic (V) fixation is possible.Within the pressure leach autoclave, arsenate and ferric iron react to form scorodite type phases. The precipitate formed under CESL conditions is dependent on the Fe (III) /As (V) ratio and the tenor of cations and anions, particularly excess sulphate (Gomez et al., 2011a). Previous studies on CESL residues have found arsenic to be present as crystalline scorodite (FeAsO4.2H2O) (Bruce et al., 2011), basic ferric arsenate sulphate (BFAS: Fe(AsO4)1-x(SO4)x(OH)x·(1-x)H2O, where 0.3<x<0.7), and/or arsenate adsorbed on to hematite (Gomez et al. 2011b). Although not a focus of previous work, scorodite was the predominant precipitate formed when the concentrate Fe/As was <1.5 (Mayhew et al., 2010), and BFAS was the predominant precipitate when the concentrate Fe/As was >10 (Gomez et al. 2011b)."

"Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy sorting technology is incorporated in an automated optical mineral sorter that can discriminate between materials using the differences in characteristics when exposed to near-infrared radiation. During September 2014 to April 2015, a pilot plant that utilized NIR technology to discriminate between kimberlite and waste materials was commissioned to determine the viability of including this technology in the diamond winning process flow sheet at Cullinan Diamond Mine. The plant was used to minimize the waste content in the size fraction -70+35 mm that reports to the crushing section and then to the dense media separation process. This paper describes the initial test work, conducted at Mintek, that led to the decision to conduct a pilot-scale study. The mineralogical characterization of the feed and product streams to establish the sorting criteria and the operational data obtained during the pilot plant campaign are described. The results indicated a good possibility of discriminating between the kimberlite and waste material using NIR technology. However, the consistency of discrimination was not good enough to avoid the risk of potential diamond loss. Furthermore, a lower than expected availability of the machine reduced the throughput capabilities. IntroductionUsing near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technology for ore sorting is a new concept for the mineral processing and mining industry. NIRS has been used for decades in the laboratory for the identification of pure minerals, and has its roots in the recycling, food, and pharmaceutical industries (Salter and Wyatt, 1991; Robben et al., 2009). Ore sorting in itself is not a new concept; it was introduced during the Stone Age with handsorting being the first method to separate valuable materials from gangue (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2006; Sassos, 1985). However, over the years the scale of mining has increased and hand-sorting has become challenging to implement (Joensson, 2014).Sensor-based sorting is an advanced technology that can help overcome problems such as ore dilution experienced in mineral processing operations. The benefits are lower energy and water costs, reduced ore dilution, lower environmental impact, and improved profit margin (Mathew, 1974; Jonsson, 2014; Salter and Wyatt, 2009; Death et al., 2009). In sensor-based sorting, materials are mechanically sorted based on certain physical properties that are detected by a sensor (Dalm, 2013). Research has found that with NIR scanners it is possible to obtain a ‘fingerprint’ of a sample that is directly related to its mineralogical composition. According to Woutruba et al. (2009), molecules absorb NIR radiation by means of electronic and vibrational transitions. Nowadays, there are many sensors available in the market that utilize different material properties; the choice of a sensor is dependent on the mineralogy of the ore."

Commencing in 1956, Rio TInto Australian Exploration Pty Limited in association with Electrolytic Zinc Co of Australasia, Limited, has been carrying out a mineral prospecting program in North-West Tasmania over an area of about 4000 square miles.The program has comprised extensive airborne geophysical surveys, detailed geological mapping, ground geophysical and geochemical investigations. Out of the wealth of new data, and the examination of previous records, has emerged a new structural concept of regional ore control and distribution in North-West Tasmania. This roncept stems from the discovery of an ancient &apos;fossil&apos; rift valley (graben), named the Owen Rift Valley, along which are located the major mines of the area and numerous well-known prospects. The known mines and prospects from north to south include Mt Bischoff (tin); the Pinnacles (zinc, lead, ropper); the Chester (pyrites); Rosebery-Hercules (lead, zinc, ropper, silver, gold); Mt Tyndall (lead, ropper, zinc); Comstock and Tasman (copper, lead, zinc); Mt Lyell (copper, pyrites, gold); Mt Jukes and Mt Darwin (ropper). The identification of the West Coast (Owen Conglomerate) Range as a fossil rift valley is due to Or B Campana, who carried out extensive geological mapping and interpretation work, and who, with S B Dickinson, are the senior authors of this paper.S B Dickinson, who introduced B Campana to the geological problems of West Tasmania, had previously investigated the Mt Lyell and Rosebery mining fIeld, to which reference is made in this work.D King assisted in the regional mapping and in providing numerous data on the mineral distribution of the area.R S Matheson rontributed to the fmdings on ore emplacement and rontrol in the discussions held on this subject. Neste artigo, buscou-se replicar, em laboratório, os procedimentos de retificação do eixo propulsor, elemento responsável pela transmissão de força e potência para os hélices do Navio, e que, frequentemente, apresentam problemas de desgaste devido ao atrito entre o eixo e seus pontos de apoio (mancais). Em virtude do intenso uso deste tipo de transporte, é frequente a manutenção da linha de eixo dessas embarcações, havendo a necessidade de uma análise que verifique se os métodos utilizados seguem padrões normatizados e que passem por testes de qualificação. A relevância regional do estudo se justifica pelo potencial hidrográfico da Região Amazônica, a qual possui bacias como Solimões-Amazonas e Rio Madeira, que servem como vias de acesso e de transporte de pequenas, médias e grandes embarcações; seus afluentes são verdadeiras estradas fluviais, sendo um modal hidroviário de importância histórica e cultural. As operações em laboratório seguiram as etapas: soldagem dos Corpos de Prova pelos processos SMAW (processo mais utilizado na maioria das empresas de retificação de eixos na região Norte) e GMAW com dois métodos (automatizado e manual) e com adição de dois metais de solda diferentes (307, 309L com e sem adição de Nióbio); ensaio por Líquido Penetrante (LP), Metalografia, Análise Macrográfica e Micrográfica e Análise de Microdureza. Os resultados obtidos em laboratório demonstraram que a metodologia desenvolvida na retificação é apropriada e eficiente para a recuperação de eixos propulsores.

Though it becomes increasingly important with the valuable minerals in their deposits tending to be fine and poor, the solid and liquid separation remains difficult especially when the particles are of micrometer size and of low density. Almost of all conventional thickeners result in that fine particles lose into overflows which often costitutes a loss of potentially valuable resources as well as an environmental hazard. The addition of flocculations may improve the settling of solids but may also not work well for the final removal of fine particles from the overflows (Ref.1).

Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and much of it is "real time," changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets and reengineer their staff, the structures and tools that were used to understand these data are lost. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a "smart" operation. The solution is to use the sophisticated new tools built for the Internet so as to leverage information in a familiar browser format that people can use and understand. This paper describes the use of Internet technologies with plant data. Examples are drawn from existing industrial sites. Users must project where this technology will lead - standing still is the most dangerous philosophy and the only one guaranteed to be obsolete. These examples show the way to leverage existing workers with information technology.

The present state of knowledge on this subject may briefly be summarized as follows: (1) The copper content of the slag increases with the grade of the matte in contact with it; on the other hand, the proportion of copper lost decreases as the matte grade increases, because as a general rule a smaller volume of slag is produced when a high-grade matte is made. (2) The presence of CaO and MgO in the slag decreases the copper content of the slag, and the presence of ZnO increases it; the presence of A1203 seems to have little effect. The influence of the silicate degree is not yet clarified, but on theoretical grounds it seems likely that the copper content increases with the silicate degree of the slag. (3) High slag viscosity, high magnetite contents and low density difference between matte and slag all tend to increase the copper loss. The volume of slag is also an important factor. (4) The effect of bath temperature on the copper loss is not clear and further investigation of this point is needed. (5) It appears possible to recover a large part of the copper in the slag by adding FeS, CaS and other sulphides

Due to the perceived potential to extract the second economic manganese seam at its Black Rock Operations in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa, Assmang commissioned an investigation with respect to mining method and sequencing of the two orebodies in 2007. Based on this initial study into multiseam potential, conditions and impacts, the rock engineering aspect was expanded to determine conceptual rules to govern the extraction of both manganese seams using the normal bord-and-pillar layout implemented at this operation. This work included the theoretical analysis using basic pillar design practices and numerical modelling, including the use of Map3D, UDEC and Phase2 codes.In 2013, Assmang launched a large-scale investigation into the potential to increase mine output from all possible manganese sources at the operation. Included in this investigation was the requirement to confirm or modify the conceptual multiseam extraction rules to implementation. As part of this confirmation process, stress measurements, borehole camera audits and additional numerical modelling were performed at a particular site on the operation where a limited extraction of both seams had been undertaken. What is meant by "Minimizing Risk"? This paper explores some of the factors encountered in plant design which can affect the success of a mineral processing plant in terms of its planned output, quality of product and recovery. Any deficiency in either one of these objectives means lost revenue at the start of a project and reduced present value for the mine life. Time is money. Related factors such as project conception, feasibility studies, capital cost and operating cost estimation and mining studies have been covered in a recent paper (1) from which material for this paper has been drawn. What follows is a discussion of the principal factors which can influence the success of a project with particular emphasis placed on processing concepts.

One of the important technological challenges facing the iron ore industry in India is to find commercially viable technologies to process alumina rich iron ore fines and slimes. The key to solving this problem lies in developing selective reagents for the separation of iron oxide minerals from associated gangue minerals like quartz, gibbsite, kaolinite and montmorillonite. We present in this paper our successful results on the dispersion-flocculation of three different natural iron ore slime samples from mines in India using the reagent combination of PVP dispersant and corn starch flocculent. All the three samples contained hematite, goethite, kaolinite and gibbsite minerals as confirmed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis. The effect of various process parameters such as pH, dosage of reagents, settling time and pulp density was studied. We were able to produce a concentrate assaying 66.2% Fe and <2% Al with a yield of 67.4% by weight (with a recovery of 77% of iron values) using PVP (1 ppm dosage) and corn starch (20 ppm) for one of the slime sample (Sample I) assaying 58.2% iron (Fe) and 3.8% aluminium (Al). The XRD analysis of settled and dispersed fractions revealed that alumina-containing minerals like clay and gibbsite mostly remain in the dispersed phase while iron-bearing minerals tend to concentrate in the flocculated fraction. Blister copper was successfully deoxidized with any of a variety of reducing gases; lancing techniques or a vertical-column furnace were used to contact the copper and gases. Of the gases tested, butane, when used to lance molten copper at about 1,200° C, reaction temperature, was slightly more effective than propane, natural gas, carbon monoxide, or reformed gas for deoxidizing copper from about 1.0 to less than 0.1 percent oxygen content, Laboratory-scale tests revealed that the vertical furnace, composed of a heated column packed with silicon carbide chips or hollow carbon cylinders, was significantly faster and more efficient than the lancing technique for deoxidizing molten copper with any of the gases tested. Comparison of the gaseous-reduction method with the conventional poling method suggests that the gaseous method has important technical and economic advantages for deoxidizing blister copper to any readily controlled amount of residual oxygen content.
