"The regional stratigraphy of the Lower Carboniferous Windsor Group in the Moncton Subbasin indicates that evaporites could be present in the Marysville Subbasin, part of what was formerly called the Central New Brunswick Platform. The Windsor Group consists of basement-fringing, algal build-ups (Gays River Formation), in places with intercalated siliciclastics (Parleeville), which are laterally equivalent to deeper-water, very thin to thinly bedded, euxinic limestone (Macumber). The Macumber is overlain by stratiform, nodular to mosaic anhydrite (Upperton) that is hosted by carbonate or calcareous siliciclastics. The sulphate also is equivalent, in part, to the algal buildups. Deep-water salts (Cassidy Lake) which overlie and in places are laterally equivalent to Upperton rocks have a basincentre distribution. The Windsor Group is overlain by shallow water evaporites and mudstones (Clover Hill) or by greenish grey mudstone (""transitional beds""). The paleogeographic distribution of these rocks provide important clues that help predict where deposits of salt and potash can occur.IntroductionCurrently there are three known potash deposits in southern New Brunswick (2, 3 and 4, in Fig. I). All three deposits occur in the Windsor Group of the Moncton Subbasin, but until recently their exact stratigraphic position within the group was not known.The Windsor Group is a cyclic sequence of carbonates, evaporites and red beds that is up to 1.0 km in thickness (Schenk 1969, p. 1038). It is Late Mississippian (Visean) in age and the type area is near Windsor, Nova Scotia. The group was named by Dawson (1873) but the rocks were described earlier by Hartt (1867). Dawson (ibid.) was the first to assign rocks in southern New Brunswick to the Windsor Group."

In the summer of 1909 the Boston & Montana reduction department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. completed a new flue system, at a cost of about $1,100,000, and as this includes the largest and highest chimney in the world, and some new features of flue construction, a description will be of interest. At the Spokane meeting of the Institute in September, 1909, a brief mention was made of this flue system, in discussing Mr. Brunton's presidential paper on the Progress of Metallurgy in the West, and a promise was given that when a long enough time had elapsed, so that operating results could be given, a paper would be offered. The smelting plant includes blast furnaces, MacDougall roasters, gas-fired reverberatories, and converters.

Coal produced from surface mines in the Western United States is becoming a more important part of this nation's economy as other types of fuels become scarce. This paper reports the investigation of alternative methods of handling the parting between two coal seams. The results of this investigation are presented as the engineering-economic aspects of alternative parting handling methods involving stowing or back filling techniques. The coal and parting characteristics were selected as being representative of those under consideration or actively mined in the West. The basic philosophy of evaluation is to establish a mine-within-a-mine where equipment selected for minimal capital investment can remove the parting and second seam nearly independent of the ongoing, present production. With proper consideration of design, this parting-coal removal is evaluated as a second operation within the first and has its own profitability measure. The Fort Union Area of Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas contains large reserves of low sulfur sub-bituminous coal. In many locations, several coal seams are close to the surface and are separated by relatively thin layers of parting. The removal of overburden and the mining of the upper seam is accomplished effectively with conventional mining methods and equipment. Mining a second seam of coal and handling the parting in accord with economic and environmental controls presents a number of problems. Typically, mining companies have adapted the conventional strip mining techniques used in the East. However, the extreme thickness of the western coal seams offers alternative mining method possibilities for parting and second seam removal.

"This laboratory study investigates the damage evolution of sandstone specimens under two types of cyclic loading conditions through monitoring and analyzing the variations of elastic moduli and ultrasonic velocities. We adopted the rigidity degradation method for evaluating the damage accumulation through the rock dynamic ultrasonic velocity measurements. Compared to the ultrasonic test, the method of rigidity degradation shows deficiencies in the detection of damage development. The cyclic loading within the elastic limit led to a stiffening trend for the loading process but a softening trend for unloading process. The method of rigidity degradation was unable to describe the damage accumulation in this situation, while P-wave velocity clearly reflected the damage development. Moreover, a simplified model is established for interpreting the behaviors of the modulus variations and ultrasonic velocity. The cyclic loading within elastic limit enhances the anisotropy of rock, which causes a denser packing pattern in the direction of axial stress. The persistent damage accumulation under the cycling with an increasing upper limit is the consequence of the tensile failure in the microstructure of sandstone. INTRODUCTION The damage accumulation due to dynamic (cyclic) loading is highly detrimental in many engineering structures, such as mine openings, petroleum and natural gas boreholes, tunnels, rock foundations, and underground chambers. The sources of cyclic or repetitive loadings can be roughly divided into two types: (1) periodic operation, including drilling, blasting, and mining; (2) random vibration, including earthquakes and traffic loads. The repetitive loading-unloading process opens and closes the micro-pores and micro-cracks within the rock, further inducing the growth of cracks. As expected, the accumulating damage becomes a potential factor to trigger the rapid and violent failures of large-scale engineering rock structure."

A aplicação de ligas de NiTi como biomateriais exige que sua superfície tenha um excelente acabamento final, para garantir a alta resistência à corrosão e a biocompatibilidade. O polimento eletrolítico é um processo capaz de diminuir as imperfeições da superfície, sem alterar as propriedades do material, e de formar uma fina camada protetora de TiO2. Nesse estudo, foram realizados eletropolimentos em fios superelásticos e com memória de forma, usando dois eletrólitos ácidos distintos. A partir dos resultados obtidos, foi possível concluir que a solução de ácido sulfúrico produz superfícies mais homogêneas do que o de ácido perclórico, para os mesmos tempos de polimento, e se apresenta como uma boa alternativa para o tratamento superficial de ligas superelásticas e martensíticas de para sua aplicação como biomateriais.

The chemical reaction can cause expensive damage to building stone; it is essential that a stone evaluation for use in construction should assess the possibility of this type of decay. This paper endeavours to develop testing procedures for evaluating stone decay in polluted environments. Such tests can accompany other standard tests used in dimension- stone evaluation."

Lithium metal silicates (Li2MSiO4, M = Fe or Mn) composed of abundant and non-toxic elements are important cathode materials for Li-ion batteries (LIB). In contrast to solid-state or sol-gel methods, hydrothermal synthesis conducted in pressure reactors is a favorable processing route as it provides the potential for scalable production and is environmentally benign. However, the key is to control the precipitation reaction to obtain powders with desired properties to meet battery specifications. Through a systematic study, we have found that Li2MSiO4 with tunable size from 300 nm to 1.5 μm can be produced by adjusting precursor concentrations, temperature, and reaction time. Under optimum conditions, high purity Li2MSiO4 with minimum defects were successfully produced and examined as an LIB cathode. The use of complexing agents promoted the formation of unique hollow particles via the self-assembling of elongated crystals. A four-step formation mechanism is proposed based on extensive characterizations with XRD, HR-TEM, SEM, and Mössbauer spectroscopy.

THE mineral industry of Canada relies heavily upon the talent of its technical men. It is vital to the well-being of the industry that its supply of young, trained men be adequate. At the present time, the industry is acquiring only 200 new graduates a year. The shrinking supply is far below present and future requirements. Other industries and research organizations are competing for engineers and scientists. Dr. J. B. Mawdsley (1), Past-President of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, has recently outlined a program designed to attack the problem. Dr. J'. C. Sproule (2), another former President of the Institute, has stated that: "The need for selection of trainee material is commonly recognized, but little is done about it." The following paper contains a short discussion of occupational interests, and outlines research, using psychological knowledge and measuring techniques, aimed at the identification of desirable recruits for the mineral industry.

"In view of the chronic overcapacity problem in the world potash industry and Saskatchewan's recent emergence as a major producer, the long-term outlook for potash productive capacity and consumption is of importance and interest to both the Saskatchewan Government and the potash industry. This paper is based on a report recently published by the Saskatchewan Department of Mineral Resources on projected world potash productive capacity and consumption for the ten-year period 1970 to 1980. Potash productive capacity and consumption are estimated on a country and regional basis and projected annually to 1980. Tables and graphs are included which summarize projected capacity and consumption for the period and illustrate the impact of Saskatchewan's capacity upon the North American and world potash industries."

This paper discusses accident experience and costs in 150 Colorado coal mines for the 5 years 1929-33; these mines produced 62 percent of Colorado's coal tonnage during this period. This and similar studies by the United states Bureau of Mines in other States (listed in the appendix to this report) make available comparable information on mine-accident costs and bring out clearly the importance of accident reduction from the humanitarian as well as from the economic standpoint. Compensation insurance costs constitute a considerable part of the cost of coal output. The tendency toward greater liberalization of workmen's compensation laws and increased benefits thereunder may mitigate to some extent the seriousness of an accident to a worker and his dependents, but no compensation is paid ultimately, not by an insurance fund but by the mine operator and the general public, which includes the miner. The one really effective method of reducing compensation costs is to reduce the number and severity of accidents.

HPGRs have since introduced in the 1980s (Kellerwessel, 1993; Schönert, 1988), now become integral comminution units at several minerals processing plants around the world. Even though a lot of the initial issues concerning performance, availability and wear have been addressed and solved there are still phenomena and aspects which can be improved and understood further. Schönert and Sander (2002) presented experimental results and a mechanistic model including the internal force dynamics between the rollers and the compacted bed. They derived expressions for the pressure distribution involving most of the influencing terms and effects. However, in order to solve the differential equations several of the terms vanish by assumptions. The Schönert and Sander model reflects the experimental data in many aspects but the predicted shear force distinctly deviates from the experimental results at the angular position of the peak pressure level. This finding suggests that the particle to particle interaction and breakage process in the different zones seen in Figure 1 are complex and difficult to model using analytical models. A numerical modelling approach using DEM does not require the same amount of assumptions and simplifications of boundary conditions. Hence such modelling may provide further knowledge and vital understanding. In this paper the breakage process is simulated in order to investigate the shear slip behaviour and how it relates to different operating variables. A laboratory scale HPGR corresponding to the experimental setup used by Schönert (2002) have been modelled in EDEM (DEM-Solutions). The bonded particle model (BPM) is used for modelling quartz particles (Potyondy, 2004). The breakage model strength parameters are calibrated against interparticle breakage experiments in an Instron 400RD compression device. The contact model parameters are calibrated using calibration methods developed by Quist (2015). The floating roller dynamics are modelled using a spring-damper system. Results present insights regarding the interparticle slip behaviour as well as the frictional tangential force distribution on the rollers. The simulated roller pressure distribution shows good correspondence with previously reported findings in the literature.

O presente trabalho foi realizado com a finalidade de estudar o efeito dos elementos titânio (teor de 0,05%) e de níquel (teor de 0,03%) na liga Al-0,05%Cu-[0,24-0,28] %Fe-0,7%Si para fins de transmissão e distribuição de energia elétrica. Dessa forma, foi adotada uma sequência operacional a fim de caracterizar as estruturas apresentadas pelas ligas. Os processos de solidificação foram realizados via coquilha de aço (forma de “U”). Depois de solidificadas as ligas, os lingotes passaram pelos processos mecânicos de usinagem e laminação para obtenção de corpos de prova com quatro distintos diâmetros (2,7; 3,0; 3,8; 4,0) mm a fim de aproximar estes das bitolas utilizadas em indústrias de cabos elétricos. Todas as ligas foram caracterizadas macroestruturalmente analisando as estruturas brutas de fusão, eletromecanicamente por meio do ensaio de tração [?] e condutividade elétrica [%IACS]. Posteriormente, para a melhor compreensão dos resultados foram avaliados os valores de alongamento [?%] indicando que o diâmetro 3,00mm é a modificação com 0,05%Ti foram os de melhor resultados apresentados.

The photochemical reactions of cyanide ion induced by light were investigated in the presence or absence of a titanium(IV) oxide semiconductor photocatalyst. The light sources employed were the sun and arrays of either mercury or fluorescent (cool white) lamps. The results obtained verify that cyanide decomposes much faster when TiO2 is present in the solution and that it is first oxidized to cyanate. However, contrary to the previous studies, it is established that cyanide is subsequently further oxidized via nitrite all the way to nitrate irrespective of the light source. As expected, the rates of the oxidation processes decrease with the illumination source utilized in the following order: Hg-lamps > sunlight > fluorescent lamps. As nitrate is a significantly less hazardous contaminant than cyanide, complete photocatalytic oxidation of cyanide to nitrate may be a viable method for decontamination of cyanide wastes. Contrary to previous claims, we find that cyanide is slowly photochemically decomposed even in the absence of TiO2. For example, with the mercury lamps as the light source, in two hours, cyanide concentration decreases to essentially zero; up to 7% was converted to cyanate and the remainder to unidentified products.

Antimony oxide ores are important antimony resources, but their recovery is still a problem. In this paper, the adsorption behaviour and mechanism of dodecamine and quaternary ammonium salt on the surface of cervantite and quartz were investigated. The flotation behaviour of cervantite and quartz using quaternary ammonium salts and dodecylamine as collectors was studied by single mineral flotation experiments. The adsorbed amount was measured and infrared spectroscopy was used to study the ability of several cationic collectors to float cervantite and quartz. The results show that quaternary ammonium salts can simultaneously float the cervantite and quartz. It is difficult to achieve separation of the two minerals using quaternary ammonium salts as collectors. At pH>10, dodecylamine can float quartz but not cervantite, which can achieve reverse flotation separation of the two minerals. The difference between the abilities of quaternary ammonium salts and dodecylamine to float cervantite and quartz lies in the different ionisation properties of the two reagents. Quaternary ammonium salt is a strong electrolyte that is completely ionised in the pulp and exists mainly in the form of quaternary ammonium ions. The mining industry is facing a variety of geological, technological and social challenges. Future deposits show a general tendency towards increasing depth with complex ores and decreasing grades. One promising approach to deal with low-grade ores is bioleaching in the form of heap and dump operations. Bioleaching is already a state-of-the-art technique, especially for the extraction of copper from sulfide ores. The next step in the development of this technology will be its application as an in situ technology. First attempts to adapt this technology in underground mining in the form of stoping and block caving have already been made. Both methods have to be carried out adjacent to conventional mining operations and therefore require much effort regarding drift development as well as extraction and transport. The adaption of bioleaching as a borehole mining method is the next step to establish an innovative in situ technique to meet future challenges.The Freiberg University of Mining and Technology established the Biohydrometallurgical Centre for Strategic Elements (BHMZ) to foster interdisciplinary research along the whole biohydrometallurgical process chain. In general, 13 different university institutes and several associated groups with about 30 PhD students are mainly focusing on the extraction of indium and germanium from deposits, tailings and recycling material. One of the core projects within the BHMZ is the design and implementation of an underground in situ bioleaching testing facility.This paper demonstrates the potential of in situ bioleaching under technological aspects. Furthermore, different conditioning methods to increase the permeability of the orebody will be explained, and the BHMZ’s underground testing facility will be presented.CITATION:Schlueter, R and Mischo, H, 2015. INTRODUCTION Underground mines in many parts of the world have elevated levels of short-lived 222Rn daughters. Lung cancer implicating exposure to short-lived daughters is documented in the U.S., Czechoslovakia, Canada, Sweden, the U.K., France and Newfoundland. An elevated lung cancer mortality (in excess of that expected) has been observed when cumulative exposure to alpha emitting short-lived 222Rn daughters (218Po, 214pb 214Bi 214Po) is greater than about 60 working level months (WLM) [1]/ (Hewett, D. 1979). This is equal to an absorbed alpha dose of about 30 rads to shallow basal cells in bronchial epithelium. Long-lived alpha emitters are also present in underground mines, and especially uranium mines because of airborne particulates containing uranium. The 238U parent of this primordial series supports other long-lived emitters 234U 230Th, 226Ra, Pb(210Po) which are in some degree of radioactive equilibrium with the parent 238U. Airborne particulates can be present due to drilling on the face of the ore body as well as in all parts of the mine through resuspension from the mine floor. Particles from 1 µm to about 5 µm penetrate the nose with reasonable efficiency and deposit primarily in the tracheobronchial tree. They are removed by ciliary motion (the bronchial escalator) but deliver an alpha dose to basal cells in bronchial epithelium during clearance in the same manner as short-lived 222Rn daughters. It is the purpose of this work to indicate the alpha dose to basal cells in bronchial epithelium delivered by the long-lived emitters 234, 238U. The dose calculations reported here based upon a few measured values of these isotopes in air in uranium mines in New Mexico and Colorado. MEASURED 234, 238U IN URANIUM MINE ATMOSPHERES In 1979, the U.S. Bureau of Mines undertook a study to evaluate personal monitors to be worn by miners to measure short-lived 222Rn daughters. One of these devices sampled air at 100 cm3/min through a 13 mm glass fiber filter, with a small pump worn on the belt. Alpha particles emitted by 222Rn daughters on the filter were measured continuously by a thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) chip. Each monitor was worn by a miner for a 170 hour working month and approximately one cubic meter of air was sampled during this period. Six different mines were selected for the test in New Mexico and Colorado. The mines used either wet or dry drilling methods. Miners in each location were equipped with the personal monitors. Subsequent to their use in evaluating the shortlived daughters, Dr. Robert Droullard of the Bureau generously gave us these filter samples along with a few blank glass fiber filters from the same box of filters used in the study so that long-lived emitters present in these mine atmospheres could be determined radiochemically. Four of the samples have been run for 234, 238U. The radiochemical procedure for uranium is adapted from USDOE, Environmental Measurements Laboratory Manual (Harley, J.H., 1976). Briefly, the samples were placed in platinum crucibles, spiked with 232U tracer and pretreated with nitric and hydrofluoric acid. The residue was fused with potassium fluoride to transpose to pyrosulfate. The fused cake was dissolved in 7 [N] hydrochloric acid and the solution passed through an anion exchange column to isolate uranium. Iron was removed using mercury cathode electrolysis. Uranium was electrodeposited onto platinum dies and counted using solid-state alpha spectrometry. The samples from each type of mine (wet and dry) were analyzed. The samples in the "wet" mine in New Mexico were selected on the basis of the original TLD measurement because they were near the maximum occupational standard for radon daughters. These samples should also represent upper limits to longlived activity encountered, since they were obtained at drilling operations on the face of the ore body. Samples collected in the "dry" mine in Colorado were pot associated with a particular location in the mine and should be representative of a month long overall exposure in many locations and operations. Primarily, this report presents the results of direct efficiency tests which were conducted on the 200-hp Coal-Pak, hot water generator, No. 3 unit, at the Otterbein College heating plant in Westerville, Ohio. Also included is a comparison of fuel consumption of the old plant with that of the new plant, a comparison of efficiencies obtained by the indirect method on a 300-hp Coal-Pak, and the cost of gas vs coal to show the savings effected by the latter. Tests were conducted with ten different bituminous coals selected by Mr. S. A. Frye, business manager at Otterbein College. The coals, of ten different suppliers, from four different states and eight different seams, represented competitive products economically available to the heating plant. The tests were conducted by the usual plant personnel which consisted of the plant superintendent and two assistants. No outside supervision of any kind was given during the tests. The tests were made from Dec. 13, 1960, through Mar. 4, 1961. During this period, 300.03 tons of coal were burned in the No. 3 unit. This tonnage represented 25.5 pct of the total coal requirements for the 1960-61 season. Operation during the period was typical for the comfort heat load which the plant supplies. Of the 78.12 operating days, the boiler was on bank or holdfire 14.31 days, or 18.32 pct of the time. The length of individual bank periods varied from 2 hr to three days. Run periods varied from about 2 hr to 7.26 days. DESCRIPTION OF PLANT AND HEATING EQUIPMENT The new Otterbein College heating plant, completed in the summer of 1957, is located in a 50x50 ft boiler room on the lower level of a combination maintenance building and heating plant. The building is situated away from the main college complex on a hillside, which allows for on-grade delivery of coal to the three bunkers. The bunkers are located directly above and connected with the individual stoker hoppers. Fig. 1 shows an in-plant view of the Coal-Pak installations. The No. 3, hot water, unit is at the extreme right. The heating plant consists of three 200-hp Coal-Paks. Unit No. 1 is operated at 4 psi and carries the steam heating load of 14,000 sq ft EDR (steam) installed in two buildings. Provision has been made to convert these buildings to hot water heating at some future date. Since the unit under maximum load conditions operates only at about 50 pct steaming capacity, a heat exchanger was installed to convert steam to hot water. Thus, during light loads in mild weather the unit can be employed more efficiently to supply both steam and hot water and eliminate the need for operating either of the two hot water units. Units No. 2 and No. 3 serve a hot water heating circuit for a large group of 21 buildings of the College. These boilers deliver hot water at temperatures up to 200°F to the various buildings through distribution lines in tunnels. The present calculated maximum heat loss for the College is 15.195 million Btu per hr. The Coal-Paks have individual design capacities of 6.700 million Btu per hr. Table I lists the design date for the Coal-Paks. The No. 3 unit was chosen as the test unit, primarily because of its bunker location at the far end of the delivery ramp. Because of this location any excess coal above bunker capacity could be conveniently stored and isolated from the adjoining bunkers. Each bunker has a capacity of 30 to 35 tons of coal.
