The Coteau Properties Company's Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mining operation located near Beulah, North Dakota. As part of the mining process, Coteau removes and replaces thin layers of suitable plant growth material (SPGM) generally ranging in thickness between one and five feet. Historically, tractor-scrapers completed this work; however, rising tractor-scraper costs and increasing haulage distances sent Coteau in search of a lower cost method resulting in the acquisition of a backhoe/truck fleet in 1995.

"The Ordos coal field is located in the northern midwestern part of China (Fig. 1). Since the mid- 1980s, it has been developed into one of the major coal fields in the world, producing approximately 833 Mt (918 million st) of raw coal in 2013. There were once more than 400 coal mines operating in the region. However, due to the combination of market conditions and implementation of government consolidation policies, the number of coal mines operating in recent years has been reduced considerably, with increasing output.The surface of the Ordos coal field is covered with loess and alluvium layers of varying thicknesses. In many areas, their combined thickness may amount to as much as 100 m (328 ft) underlain by thin bedrock. Many loess and alluvium are aquifers receiving water from rainfalls. There are also gullies of varying depths crossing the coal field. Figure 2 is a typical stratigraphic column highlighting the coal seams and roof and floor rocks of interest.In conjunction with the development of highproductivity coal mines, numerous ground control instrumentation tests have been conducted in the operating longwall panels. Analyses of the results of those tests offer the opportunity to understand the effect of wide-ranging mining and geological factors on the overburden movement. For this reason, trips were made to coal mines of interest to interview mine management and collect their unpublished internal research reports on ground control instrumentation. In addition, literature searches on published thesis/dissertations and papers in the professional journals were performed. Finally, data from a total of 95 fully mechanized longwall panels were collected. The instrumentation involved primarily the monitoring of hydraulic pressures of longwall shields, from which the first roof weighting and first roof caving interval and periodic roof weighting and periodic roof weighting interval were identified and determined. Some panels also included measurements of roofto- floor convergence at the face, roof strata bed separation, longwall face sloughage and the height of caving and fractured zones in the overburden. Those 95 panels were located in 20 coal mines (Fig. 1) congregated along both sides of the Wulunmulun River with the following mining and geological conditions. All together those 20 mines produced more than 224 Mt (246 million st) in 2013, accounting for approximately 27 percent of the total coal production in the Ordos coal field:1. Period of mining: 1991-2013.2. Mining methods: All panels employed the one slice, full-seam natural-caving longwall mining method like those practiced in the United States. All panels were developed with a twoentry system with a single-row of chain pillars measuring 20- x 20-m (65.6- x 98.4-ft) wide.3. Coal seams (Fig. 3): Coal in Ordos coal field is high-quality steam coal, that is very low in sulfur, potassium and ash, but high in Btu. Data were collected in panels mined in a total of 10 seams with 82 panels in four seams and the remaining 13 panels in six seams. The first six seams (1-2, 2-2, 3-1, 3-2, 4-2, 5-2) were mined by the Shenhua Coal Group (the world’s largest coal company) and the #4-2, 5-2, 6R, 62, and 62R seams were mined by both the Shenhua and Yitai Coal groups. In each coal group, the sequence of mining was in descending order. For example, in Shenhua Group, the top seam 1-2 was mined first, followed by the 2-2, 3-1, 3-2, and 4-2 seam in that descending order. In Fig. 3, the top-down sequence of coal seams is listed from left to right in each coal mine group. All seams were near horizontal with dip angles less than 3°."

Casting fluxes are one of the key factors to guarantee a good performance of the continuous casting process. Fluxes are added over the liquid steel in the mold, where carbon in the flux reacts with any air present, to form a reducing atmosphere of CO (g) to protect molten steel from oxidation. Then the oxide components form the sintered layer and they melt to form a liquid flux pool. Liquid slag from the pool infiltrates into the mold/strand channel and lubricates the newly-formed, steel shell. It was very common in the past that the addition of casting flux in the mold was made manually by the continuous casting strand operator, where the addition uniformity would mainly depend on the attention of the Operator in process and the addition standard would change from one operator to another, may causing variability on the continuous casting quality parameters. This paper presents improvement of continuous casting parameters such as, stability of flux thickness and reduction of dust in the continuous casting process, with the use of flux distribution mechanism in two continuous casting machines from two different steel plants.

During the past 4 or 5 years, much has been added to the detailed geologic knowledge of the Mesabi Range. This has not been in the direction of discovery of any new fundamental facts, but of detailed study, subdivision and correlation of different parts of the whole formation and of individual orebodies. Prior to this time, mining engineers in the district were so engaged with the commercial interests of exploring and developing orebodies that close geologic study and subdivision were done in a few instances only. The demand for refinement of work in .this direction has led 'the engineers of the Oliver Iron Mining Co. to do extensive structural subdivision and correlation in all exploration work during the past 4 years. Such work has become a commercial necessity rather than a scientific refinement, and at the present time is being extended to all parts of the Range. In the summer of 1914, the author of this paper wrote a series of articles on the orebodies and special features of the Mesabi Rangc, which was published in the Engineering and Mining Journal, issues of July 17 to Aug. 7,1915. Since that time studies of subdivision of the iron-formation have been extended considerably. The principal feature of this paper is the presentation of the subdivisions of the iron-formation. To this is added a discussion of the relations of the orebodies to the gentle folding and fracturing of the formation, and special features of the Range. The outline will be as follows : I. India is the world’s third-largest producer of coal and is endowed with the fifth-largest coal reserves in the world. Surface mining straddles the entire domain of the Indian coal mining industry, yielding over 88 per cent of production. With continually rising domestic demands, it has to shoulder the responsibility of sustaining the requisite increase in coal production and chasing commensurate stripping targets. Such an ambitious task calls for the deployment of smart technologies. In such a demanding situation, cast blasting of overburden has emerged as a promising alternative for enhancing production and productivity of dragline pits.The cast blasting technique reduces stripping costs significantly as it utilises the chemical energy of explosives in place of mechanical energy to move large volumes of overburden quickly. Proper application of cast blasting not only reduces overall mining costs but also increases coal production. This paper investigates and evaluates the potential of the cast blasting technique, with special reference to dragline pits employing the rehandle method of extended bench. The economic feasibility of the technique is also ensured under different scenarios so that considerable benefits would accrue to the individual surface coalmines. To underline the efficacy of the technique, different cast blasting models have been formulated under a range of operational and economic scenarios that resemble present day practices in India. New high and low double outfall bridge structures for a juvenile fish bypass system have been constructed on the Washington Shore approximately two miles downstream from the Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River. The high and low outfalls each extend approximately 400 feet into the river from the Washington shore and are designed to release juvenile salmon into the river at above-water discharge elevations for improved survival rates. The two outfall structures include post-tensioned concrete double box flume girders approximately 7 feet high by 13 feet wide, which will be submerged in river flows as high as 15 feet per second. Each of the 6 offshore foundation piers is composed of a single 10-foot diameter reinforced concrete drilled shaft with a permanent steel casing embedded into the river bottom approximately 100 feet. Challenging outfall design conditions included designing the entire structures to be submerged for long periods of time in 15-feet-per-second river water flow with a 60-foot cantilever at the end of each outfall, and with the superstructure 70 to 80 feet above the river bottom. Figures 1-1,1-2, and 1-3 show the high and low outfall structure overhead photos and elevation view.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi validar o modelo proposto por Kasuya et al para prever as durezas máximas da zona termicamente afetada (ZTA) em juntas soldadas de um aço com médio teor de carbono através de ensaios empíricos. Para isto, se faz necessário o cálculo da energia de soldagem, quando foram testados modelos apresentados por Marques e Modenesi e também o modelo proposto por Perdigão. As juntas soldadas foram produzidas usando chapas de aço SAE 1045 com espessura de 12,7 mm como material base, chanfro de 70º e arame sólido do tipo ER70S-6. Para mudar as condições de resfriamento das juntas soldadas, foram testadas variações nos parâmetros de soldagem, tais como: energia de soldagem, taxa de resfriamento e temperaturas de pré-aquecimento e interpasses. Foram feitos experimentos com e sem pré-aquecimento e testados pós-aquecimento e alívio de tensões. As amostras da zona fundida e da ZTA tiveram as durezas medidas e foram analisadas por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Em linhas gerais, os resultados empíricos para a dureza na ZTA seguem a mesma tendência prevista pelo modelo de Kasuya et al, mas observam-se desvios na proporcionalidade validando a equação parcialmente para o material estudado. Também foi possível constatar que para o cálculo da energia de soldagem são adequados os modelos propostos por Perdigão e Marques e Modenesi.

The present work is focused on the thermodynamic study of the methane or biogas mixtures conversion on Cu-ceria catalysts. Several experimental studies reported in literature have demonstrated the ability of these materials to operate as SOFC anodes for direct methane oxidation, with the evidence of enhanced tolerance towards sulfur poisoning and carbon deposition. More recently, experimental investigations have shown the feasibility of Cu-ceria anodes to directly operate with simulated biogas feeds at intermediate temperature (1023K). In this way, the effect of the ceria redox properties on the equilibrium composition is investigated, considering methane or biogas mixtures as the fuel. Conditions under which carbon deposition and sulfur poisoning can be prevented are determined. Our study combines results from the classical thermodynamics, obtained with the help of FactSage software, with the new Cu-S and Ni-S diagrams proposed in literature, which were calculated based on the Density Functional Theory (DFT). These diagrams are able to predict a region where sulfur interacts with the metal surface through chemisorption. A comparison between the performances of Ni-YSZ and Cu-CeO2 catalysts is established from a thermodynamic viewpoint. Theoretical results are in agreement with the experimental trends from literature.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory investigation designed to evaluate the stress and deformation characteristics of fully grouted roof bolts subjected to various magnitudes of end loadings. The experiment and subsequent analysis were completed, utilizing axial deformation data obtained -ultrasonically from forty-one 4-ft, grade 40 roof bolts, with a total of 132 measurement locations along the lengths of the bolts. The ultrasonic measurement instrumentation used in this investigation allowed for elongation measurements without requiring extensive bolt modifications. The results indicate that approximately 39 pct o{ the applied end load dissipated within the first 3.4 in of the bolts. However, only 3 pct of the applied load was realized beyond 28 in of the grout column. Data are presented individually for every 6-in increment of bolt length, and analysis was performed using statistical, nonlinear equations developed for 5,000 and 8,000 lb loading conditions.

Coal slurry pumping was introduced into the U.K. in 1973. Gateside packs were prepared in areas of containment using R.O.M. coal and a special fast setting cement. The packs restricted roadway convergence and moderated spontaneous combustion risks, but costs were high and alternptives were sought. A similar system using OPC and an accelerator had limited success. Much more successful was the Aquapack process which used dilute slurries of a special OPC based cement and an accelerator based on sodium carbonate and bentonite pumped simultaneously into la fabric packbag. The Tekpak system using HAC and a much modified calcium sulphate mixture superceded Aquapack on the grounds of improved cement pumping life lower alkalinity and lower costs. A further modification of this system gave a cement with a 24 hour pumping life thus obviating flushing out pipe ranges except at the week-ends, improved packbags also increased the efficiency of the process. The hazard of spontaneous combustion can be inhibited if air supply channels across the waste can be located and plugged. Using gas samples from pack pipes to locate the heating and injecting a special grout, formulated from bentonite, sodium silicate and thixotroping agents. into the waste on the intake road has proved a successful method of controlling heatings. Mine' roadway and face cavities are being safely and successfully filled with cementitious foams produced in a novel placer machine. The foams are based on fast setting cements with specialised foaming agents. Up to 13 cu. metres per hour of fast setting thixotropic foams can be produced and their use is now widespread throughout U.K. coal mines.

The aim of this paper is to assess the effect of microwave treatment on copper sulfide ore for ball milling and bed breakage. Liberation analysis of ground products in eight size fractions showed that microwave pretreatment liberated more chalcopyrite particles from the bed breakage product than the ball mill product. In bed breakage, microwave pretreatment caused a 2% increase in chalcopyrite liberation on average. Microwave pretreatment produces more elongated particles in ball milling and more rounded particles in bed breakage, respectively. Microwave pretreatment produces coarser chalcopyrite particles with a wide range of sizes. This effect is more significant in bed breakage compared with ball milling. Micro-flotation test results showed that in ball milling, treated and untreated materials have similar metallurgical performance and there is a little difference (1%) between the average Cu recovery values. However, in bed breakage, the average recovery for the treated materials is about 5% higher than the untreated materials.

Quantitative mineralogy is used in a study done on an Inco Metals Company nickel sulfide occurrence from 'the Thompson area in Northern Manitoba. The study included: a) determination of the variations in chemical composition of the ore minerals; b) determination of the liberation of the ore minerals for the various types of ore and for different feed grinds; c) assessment of the preliminary mill test results by comparing the mineral distribution in the different tailings. Preliminary mill test results had outlined three main problem areas: 1) unacceptabiy low grade concentrate with, 2) very high weight recovery and, 3) low pyrrhotite rejection resulting in a high sulfur concentrate. The mineralogical study readily explained these results by showing that: 1) between 20 and 40% of the nickel in the feeds and 55 and 75% of the nickel lost in the tailings is associated with pyrrhotite. This accounts in part for the low grade of the concentrates obtained at high recoveries: 2) hexagonal nonmagnetic pyrrhotite constitutes over 90 percent of pyrrhotite. Since hexagonal pyrrhotite floats more readily than monoclinic pyrrhotite, this could be part of the reason for the undesirable high pyrrhotite recoveries into the concentrates. Further test work to establish both the optimal grind and the best conditions for pyrrhotite rejection is therefore mandatory.

"Grinding is one of the most energy consuming unit operations and is also a very inefficient and costly process. Therefore, it is of great importance to run the grinding process as efficiently as possible. The most common way today to control grinding processes is by measuring the power draw of the mill and try to keep it at a maximum level. However, some studies (Kawatra, 1989, Koivistoinen, 1989, Moys, 1989) have shown that this measurement doesn.t reflect everything that takes place inside a mill. Among other parameters like slurry rheology, temperature and charge behaviour, the volumetric filling of a grinding mill seems to have a large influence on the grinding efficiency (Herbst, 1988, Koivistoinen, 1992, Vermeulen, 1988). A problem in attempting to measure those parameters has been to get a sensor that is both robust and sensitive enough for continuous on-line measurement.This paper presents a method for the measurement of the apparent filling level in a pilot ball mill equipped with the Metso Continuous Charge Measurement system (CCM). In this technique a strain gauge sensor is mounted on a flat steel spring which is fitted into a recess underneath a lifter bar. In addition, a conductivity probe, the Boliden Grinding Measurement System (GMS), is mounted in another lifter bar with the purpose of comparing the two measurements. To visualise the behaviour of the charge a DEM modelling technique is used.The results indicate that the system is capable of following the normal variation that occurs in the mill. The signal also very well reflect changes in operating variables such as ball charge level, pulp density and rotational speed. By studying the nature and different features of the signal one can get a better understanding of milling circuit dynamics. Another feature of the technique is the possibility for an operator to continuously follow the grinding process and thereby run the process under optimal conditions."

The Bureau of Mines developed a procedure that enables substitution of zinc cathodes for the aluminum cathodes normally used in commercial zinc electro-winning. Using zinc cathodes eliminates the necessity for stripping and makes it possible to electrowin zinc from solutions derived from material containing excessive amounts of soluble fluorides; for example, zinc concentrates obtained as a byproduct of fluorspar mining in Kentucky and Illinois. To demonstrate the viability of using zinc cathodes, fluoride-containing zinc concentrate was roasted, leached, and purified according to current commercial practice. Electrolysis was carried out in 0.8-, 1-, 5, and 10-liter cells at 35° to 40° C with a cathode-current density of 8 amp/dm2 in a solution containing 65 g/l Zn++ and 200 g/l H2S04 using PbO2 anodes. Zinc deposits were produced on zinc cathodes with good morphology and excellent current efficiency (90 to 94 pct) in solutions containing enough fluoride (~0.5 g/l, F+) to cause sticking of zinc to aluminum cathodes. The approach described has failed previously because of severe solution-level corrosion of the zinc cathodes. The present investigation found that the use of a simple mechanical barrier to prevent oxygen migration from the anode was sufficient to prevent solution-level corrosion of the zinc cathode starting sheet.

The True Pipe® in-line sampler was developed in an attempt to address the need for a mechanically reliable and correctly designed sampler to suit one-dimensional pressurised slurry pipelines, often found in metallurgical process plants but for which no reliable and representative sampling solution as yet exists.The design, whose operation is based on the principle of symmetry, is described by Dominique François-Bongarçon (2005) with the synchronous opening and closing of relevant valves. It representatively isolates portions of the particulate material stream at predetermined intervals for effective extraction of primary increments for subsequent sample compositing.Theory of Sampling applicable solutions have proven elusive in flowing pressurised particulate material streams, with various attempts to date not having formulated a viable, mechanically reliable and acceptable design.Compliance to sampling theory is critical, and a number of tests were conducted where certain operating parameters were altered to determine their influence and sensitivity on sampling representativeness.The results of the initial series of tests performed on a carefully designed rig are presented, with additional work discussed for necessary investigation in the near future.Getting closer to a robust, economic and correct design for this challenging application in the minerals industry may now not be that far away. Plant management staff will see improved metallurgical mineral balances around their process plants and significantly reduced sampling discrepancies, particularly in tailings applications. As a part of the Bureau of Mines long-range program in asbestos, synthetic asbestiform compounds and minerals were prepared and described. Fundamental structural data on two such compounds are given in this report. Crystallographic data are provided for the synthetic isotypic compounds potassium-lead silicate, K2.Pb4 -Si8021 (I), and lead-aluminum silicate, Pb2. Pb4 .Al2Si6O21 (II). The space group symmetry 14/mmm was assigned provisionally to I and II on evidence of single crystal and piezoelectric measurements. A statistical evalua¬tion of indexed powder diffraction data revealed the cell edtes of I to be a 11.816 and c 7.932A and those of II to be a 11.723 and c 8.044A. The phases are uniaxial with observed refractive indices eD 1.790, an ?D,699 and eD 1.884, cusp 1,807, respectively. The atomic structure of I and II may be based on a complex of chains of silicon-oxygen tetrahedra lying along the c cell edge similar to the type of chain structure postulated by Pauling for scapolite. K2.Pb4.Si8021 and Pb2.Pb4 Al2Si6021 were first described by Geller and Bunting (5, 6)4 as fibrous compounds similar in crystal habit to asbestos. These authors gave powder diffraction data, although no attempt was made to find the cell edges or to index the powder diffraction patterns. Later, Shell and others (9) conducted a crystallochemical study of these fibrous silicates in search of a substitute for strategic asbestos. Their single crystal data revealed K2.Pb4 -Si8021 to be tetragonal body-centered with cell edges a 11.66, c 7.95 A. Pb2.Pb4 Al2Si6021 was concluded to be isotypic with K2.Pb4 -Si8021 on the basis of similar powder diffraction patterns, chemistry, and physical properties. No attempt was made, however, to index the powder diffraction record nor to determine the appropriate space group of either compound.

During 2009 the technical services staff at Barrick Gold Corporation's Australian Business Unit conducted a review of their five underground mines that utilise pastefill as the backfill component for these operations. Of the five mines reviewed three use dry tailings and two use wet tailings plants. The primary aim for these reviews was to determine whether pastefill was the right option to be used, and if not, what where the alternatives. The reviews undertaken focus on several areas including, paste plant operation, reticulation and barricade techniques, the geotechnical requirements for pastefill in regards to the current mining methods, the consideration of alternative methods, capital and operating cost histories compared to initial estimates, and a cost benefit analysis of pastefill against other mining methods. The main benefits from the use of pastefill is increasing the extraction of the resource, reducing or eliminating the need to leave pillars. In some mines the use of pastefill is geotechnically driven, to manage high stress environments or mining induced seismicity. A third benefit of using pastefill in some circumstances is that it reduces dilution, however it is considered that this is not a valid argument for most of the mines reviewed. At two mines no alternative to pastefill was determined, whilst differing extraction and filling strategies were potentially identified at the other three mines. The reviews developed cost benefit curves for those sites that had alternative mining methods to assist in determining whether pastefill is the right option to use for any particular stope. At the grades typically mined in each operation, pastefill was the preferred option to use. In all mines, pastefill was determined to be the best option at this time.

The Vancouver Island Highway Project (VIHP) was a $CAD 1.2 billion expenditure by the Province of British Columbia to improve travel safety and relieve traffic congestion between Victoria and Campbell River on Vancouver Island. In the section of highway between the Tsolum River and Oyster River, on the Inland Island Highway portion of the VIHP, over half of the rock to be cut and filled was found to be net acid generating. The Tsolum River has been impacted by metal leaching and acid rock drainage (ML/ARD) for decades from an upstream closed minesite. Geochemical testwork indicated: over half of the rock along this section of highway was potentially net acid generating based on a site-specific SNPR (=NP/SAP) criterion of 1.5; some core samples were already acidic; pyrite occurred in disseminated framboidal and gel forms; the rate of acid generation was not high; measured neutralisation potential (NP) provided some lag time for the onset of net acidity; and non-carbonate neutralising minerals prevented low pH (These predictions led to ML/ARD controls involving: realignment of the highway; elevation control to minimise the volume of disturbed rock; encapsulation of blasted-rock fills within the highway, surrounded by low-permeability till and covered with asphalt; and diversion of water away from cut faces. Internal pipes drained any water reaching the fills into external ditches and ponds, where the water could be monitored and, if necessary, treated. Water from the cuts was also captured in ditches and carried to monitored ponds. Elevated aqueous sulfate concentrations in several ponds confirmed that sulfide minerals were oxidising, but the lack of both acidic pH and increasing trends in concentrations demonstrated that ML/ARD was controlled. Contingency plans for any pond that may become acidic include water treatment, which predictive testwork has shown would not require substantial amounts of limestone or lime.
