Misch metal was electrowon from a treated bastnasite concentrate in a REF3-LiF-BaF2 electrolyte at 950° C. The metal was prepared and tapped from a 1,000-ampere cell, and nearly 100-percent utilization of the rare-earth oxide was achieved. Prolonged operation in a smaller cell (40 amperes) indicated that the composition of the misch metal product was reasonably constant, and no significant increase of impurities, with the exception of carbon, was noted.

Iron is one of the most exchanged commodities worldwide. Its use for steelmaking explains the growing demand in the metal which remains mainly produced by the mining and the beneficiation of iron ores. Flotation is the most used mineral separation technique worldwide, processing several billion tonnes (Bt) of ore annually, including, in some cases, hematite and magnetite ores. Based on the physicalchemical properties of mineral surfaces, flotation aims to selectively adsorb molecules that render mineral surfaces either hydrophobic or hydrophilic, known as collectors and depressants, respectively. Hydrophobic particles are then recovered in the froth by the injection of gas bubbles travelling up in the cell and attaching the hydrophobic particles. However, despite the popularity and the good performances of flotation, mining industry faces new challenges of decreasing grades and increased mineralogical complexness in ores. Many flotation variables, especially when related to reagent adsorption, remain poorly understood and it becomes necessary to gain knowledge to enhance the existing processes. Molecular modelling techniques like the density functional theory or molecular dynamics simulations (ie Classical molecular dynamics or Ab initio Molecular Dynamics) currently represent powerful tools for different applications in material sciences, like catalysis or depollution purposes. They have recently been successfully applied in the flotation area, with an increasing number of publications dealing with this topic every year. These tools provide crucial information on bulk and surface properties as well as on the adsorption mechanisms of reagents on mineral surfaces, key step in the flotation process, and synergetic effect of collector mixtures. A better understanding of the adsorption mechanisms of flotation reagents, provided by molecular simulations, will help to finely choose flotation reagents, and even lead to the development of new reagents formulations. Overall, these tools enable the discovery of practical and industrial solutions to improve the flotation process, which will undoubtedly help the mining industry to face its future challenges.

The aim of this work was to prepare the metallic coatings on 316L stainless steel dental implant and evaluate the corrosion characteristics and thus the biocompatibility of the uncoated and metallic coated dental implants and comparison of the effect of the type of coatings on biocompatibility. Three types of metallic coatings including Tantalum, Niobium, and Titanium coatings were made using physical vapor deposition process on 316L stainless steel dental implant. Structural characterization techniques including; X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis were utilized to investigate the microstructure and morphology of the coatings. Electrochemical potentiodynamic tests were performed in two types of physiological solutions at 37±1 °C in order to determine and compare the corrosion characteristics. All three types of metallic coatings had a positive effect on improvement of the corrosion behavior so that the coatings could increase the corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel and this trend was independent to the type of physiological environment. Biocompatible metallic coatings could decrease the corrosion current density that is a distinct advantage for prevention of ion release. This can improve the biocompatibility of the implant and, consequently prevention of tissue damages, inflammation and irritation and obtained desirable histopathological response.

"The comminution process is estimated to be only 1% efficient, resulting in waste energy dissipated as heat, noise, and vibration. Energy recovery from grinding circuits has not been implemented mainly because recovering heat from the surface of the grinding mill or from mill slurry can impede operation, increase maintenance requirements, and prolong plant shutdown time (and production). However, currently very little information is available in the public domain regarding the amount of waste energy and that potentially recoverable in the grinding circuit of a mineral processing plant. Availability of such information could drive innovation and improve decision-making regarding opportunities for waste energy recovery. The Canadian Mining Innovation Council (CMIC) has initiated a study with CanmetMINING and mining industry partners to develop a model to map the energy flows in grinding circuits and to quantify the potential for energy recovery. The paper outlines the underlying fundamentals and data requirements for use in the model and then focuses on quantifying the energy recovery potential of the semi-autogenous grinding and ball mill circuits at the Agnico Eagle Goldex Division. Results show that most of the electrical energy (over 75%) is used to heat the slurry, leaving only a relatively small amount of it to achieve mechanical work (~9%). INTRODUCTIONCanmetMINING commissioned a study in 2013 to better understand the barriers for adoption of new technologies in the mining industry (MNP, 2013). The conclusions highlighted the importance of enhancing industry/regulator engagement and communication to raise awareness and improve the industry’s comfort level with new technologies.In November 2014, the Green Mining Innovation Advisory Committee (GMIAC) held a workshop to explore the possibility of accelerating the uptake of green mining technologies by bringing together key stakeholders among the mining value chain to address industry priorities. Participants included representatives from mining companies and associations, academia, provincial governments and federal departments and organizations. Two key priority areas emerged at the workshop: i) energy saving, and ii) water management."

Dolomite is an essential raw material for the refractory industry, a flux in the iron and steel industry and also for the extraction of magnesium metal. Generally, particle size reduction, screening and classification are used for the preparation of the high-grade sized material for different applications, whereas low-grade fine fractions are not utilised. These fines or low-grade overburdens are dumped at the mine site for future utilisation, which creates environmental issues along with inadequate space management. In the present investigation, a detailed study was carried out to decrease the silica content of the low-grade dolomite fines from Gomardih , India, containing 28.6% CaO and 20.1% MgO along with 8.3% silica. Different process flow sheet options were evaluated with a combination of dry classifier, wet classifier, gravity concentrators as well as flotation. Different process variables were assessed along with mineralogical characterisation to optimise the process for efficient rejection of siliceous gangue minerals. Results indicated that dolomite, calcite and quartz are the major mineral phases present in the ore along with other minor minerals. It was concluded that two-stage flotation was an effective process for the reduction of silica up to below 1% after grinding to a particle size below 212 μm. A process flow sheet with a combination of gravitation air classifier and flotation can produce a concentrate with silica content below 4.5%. The purpose of this study is to provide data that demonstrates that the Alcoa flash calciner design can be used for the decomposition of AlCl3?6H2O to A1203. Heat and material valance data for calcination provides data on the partial pressure of HCl in the off-gases. Experimentally determined data for the HCl partial pressure, over solutions expected in producing alumina from clay by the hydrochloric acid process, show that HCl can be absorbed from the off-gases into process solutions to effect crystallization of AlCl3?6H2O.

During most of its history, the metallurgical industry has been seen as a source of pollution for the environment. However, during the second half of the 20th century, as the world environmental legislation became more protective and the global environmental conscience consolidated, this landscape began to change. Metallurgical activities have become increasingly related to the social and environmental impacts caused by human activities. With the adoption of environmental management in steel plants, there has been a significant change in steel-related activities which have begun to introduce modern plants, managed with environmental, social and productive efficiency. More and more, steel companies search for a decrease in negative impacts of their industrial operations on the environment, fitting them to the current environmental legislation and even increasing productivity and profitability. The steel industry has started to become a clean and more efficient industry. This work presents a case study of a sustainable steel plant project, located in an environmental preservation area. The project includes treatment and reuse of industrial liquid effluents, air emissions control, noise control, recycling, recovery and adequate waste management. It also incorporates production processes using clean technologies, capable of coproducing energy resources which may be used in the plant showing how is it possible to produce steel with environmental and social responsibility and even increase the enterpriseÆs profitability.

"Wet stirred milling is one of the most effective grinding methods in producing very fine powders in large scale production, but it is a very energy-intensive process, especially when pigments or even nanosize particles are produced. Therefore, optimization of the process parameters is important. The specific energy consumption is a function of stress energy, which describes the effect of tip speed and media characteristics on grinding, and is related to the number of stress events during milling. In effective grinding, a large number of stress events are necessary. The stirrer configuration influences the number of stress events and their intensity, because the motion of the media and the suspension are caused by a rotating stirrer. The effect of three different stirrer types: a pin, disc and blade stirrer, on the grinding rate, i.e. product fineness and specific energy were investigated in this study with a batch laboratory stirred mill with two tip speeds. The material used in the experiments was calcium carbonate. The results obtained with the smaller tip speed showed approximately similar grinding rates and energy consumption for all stirrer types. When looking in closer detail, the blade stirrer seemed to give the finest product with all grinding times compared to the pin and disc stirrers, which both produced almost the same product fineness with the same grinding times. The specific energy consumption was the smallest with the disc stirrer, but not very big differences were obtained. With a higher tip speed, greater differences occurred both in grinding rates and specific energy consumption. The blade stirrer was the most effective in grinding, and the pin stirrer the next. The net energy consumption for the blade and pin stirrers was almost the same, but it was slightly higher for the disc stirrer."

Flotation separation of galena, sphalerite with pyrrhotite in ethanoic acid + sodium acetate sys-tem was studied in this paper. The flotation tests show that galena and sphalerite can float but pyr-rhotite can hardly float in the pH range of 3.6 to 5.6 in ethanoic acid + sodium acetate system. The flotation tests also show that galena can be separated efficiently from pyrrhotite and sphalerite can be separated on the whole from pyrrhotite, but the separation efficiency of the former is much better than the latter. The flotation results have been investigated by ultraviolet spectrum and XPS analysis, and explained by theory of hard and soft acid and base (HSAB), hydrogen bond and galvanic coupling.

The constant of flotation velocity is the value characterizing the kinetics of cyclic flotation. In the statistical theory of flotation its value is the function of probabilities of collision, adhesion and tearing off the grain from the air bubble. The grain ? air bubble collision plays a key role since there must be a prior collision before the grain ? air bubble adhesion happens. The probability of such an event to occur is proportional to the relation of the grain diameter to the bubble diameter. When the grain sizes are given, it is possible to control the value of collision probability by means of the size of air bubbles. Consequently, it is significant to find the effect of physical and physicochemical factors upon the diameter of air bubbles in the form of a mathematical dependence. In the pneumo-mechanical flotation machine the air bubbles are generated by the blades of the rotor. The dispergation rate is affected by, among others, the rotor rotational speed, the amount of air transported to the flotation chamber an time and the liquid surface tension, depending on the type and number of applied flotation reagents. In the proposed paper the authors will present the distribution of air bubble diameters on the grounds of the above factors, according to the laws of thermodynamics. The correctness of the de-rived dependences will be verified empirically.

Every person involved with rock excavations, from the mine superintendent to the stope driller, is actually practising rock mechanics. They probably call it by another name -experience, and applications of this knowledge are in evidence throughout the Falconbridge operations. Only in recent years have formal rock mechanics studies been employed to provide technical assistance to the mine operators in their primary objective of producing ore safely."

In the early nineties it was observed by several European investigators and by C. S. Rice4 that an explosion could be checked and would not propagate in the parts of a mine where shale or other inert dust was present in large amounts.5 After the disastrous Courrieres explosion in France that killed 1,100 men, coal-dust explosion tests were made in France in 1907 and in Great Britain in 1908 which resulted in the conclusion that if enough incombustible dust were properly spread throughout passageways charged with coal-dust, the propagation of an explosion by the coal-dust could be prevented. In 1908 the Federal government authorized the investigation of the causes of mine explosions and of possible methods of preventing them, with the result that during 1911 the United States Bureau of Mines, after making several tests, suggested that rock-dust be used in gassy or dusty bituminous coal mines. Since that time, experiments and investigations6 have proved conclusively that widespread explosions can be prevented in coal mines by efficient rook-dusting.

IN an earlier paper1 measurements of contact angles due to the effect of xanthates on mineral surfaces were reported. The solutions in which these measurements were made differed widely from those of modern flotation circuits. It is intended, however, by introducing, one at a time, the other principal reagents of flotation, to approach gradually the solu-tion composition of flotation liquors. The work now described is an attempt to determine the effect of one of the most important of these reagents-namely, sodium cyanide-on the establishment of air-mineral contact. The work has been carried out for the following companies: Broken Hill South, North Broken Hill, Zinc Corporation, Electro-lytic Zinc of Australasia, Mount Lyell Mining and Railway, and Burma Corporation. Since the effect of cyanide is inseparably connected with the alkalinity, the results cited below deal with the mutual effects of alkalis and cyanide. Alkalis alone exert a significant effect on the air-mineral contact but comparatively large amounts are required. Since the addition of a small amount of cyanide greatly decreases the degree of alkalinity necessary for the suppression of contact at surfaces of any of the minerals experimented with (except galena) and since alkalis are rarely used alone in practice, little attention has been paid to cyanide-free solutions. It was shown in the previous paper that, excluding the dixanthogen effect, whenever contact was practicable at all in an ethyl xanthate solution the angle of contact was 60°. There is, therefore, less necessity to measure equilibrium contact angles; in fact, the experiments herein described have generally been conducted with a view to determining whether contact is possible and not to measuring the actual value of the contact angle. WITH rapidly diminishing oil reserves: a great percentage of which are uneconomical at present prices, some of the existing methods of development and production will have to undergo radical re- visions to meet the changes continually taking place in the petroleum industry. Imagination in an engineer is a great asset. The fancy of today is found to be the realization of tomorrow, and with this thought in mind, there is here presented a more or less imaginative picture which, to my mind, has a meritorious basis. Directed drilling has reached a stage of accuracy sufficient to allow the prediction that this art will be used in the future development of oil structures, especially those \\,it11 thin sand bodies 'and steep dips. Directional drilling in a number of fields in California has gratifying results. Wells which practically laid pipe lines through the oil sands have enjoyed a greater drainage radius with a consequent greater initial and cumulative production. In one field where the vertical thickness of sands was approximately 550 ft., wells drifting at an angle as great as 55 deg. fro111 vertical had over 1100 ft. of perforated pipe in contact with these sands. During the year, II2 wells were drilled in Mississippi, as foilows: wildcats drilled and abandoned, 54; wildcats producing oil, 4; oil wells drilled in oil fields, 26; oil wells drilled in fields, dry and abandoned, 10; sulphur-test wells drilled, 14; salt-water-disposal wells, 3; core tests, I. Prospecting Geophysical work in Mississippi during 1943 amounted to 1127 crew weeks, divided as follows: reflection seismograph, 809 weeks; gravity meter, 285; magnotometer, 30; torsion balance, 3. A considerable amount of core drilling was done over a large part of the state. The complete data on this activity are not available at the present time. Salt Domes To date, the following salt domes have been discovered in Mississippi: Midway, Edwards, Glass, Newman, Tatum, Oak-vale, Kings, Halifax, D'Lo, Hazlehurst, Byrd, Leedo, Prentiss, Carson, Moselle, Monticello, Ruth, Keno, Taylorsville. New Oil Fields Lincoln County.—On March 10, 1943, the California Company completed its Smith No. I in sec. 4, T. 7 N., R. 7 E., Lincoln County, as an oil well and produced 29 bbl. of 25" gravity oil in 24 hr. through a fi-in. choke. Two outpost wells have been drilled in this area by the California Company, and both have been abandoned as dry holes. Madison County. —Love Petroleum Co. completed its J. R. Anderson No. 2, sec. 2, T. 8 N., R. I W., Madison County, on Sept. 7, 1943. This well produced 135 bbl. of approximately 30" gravity- oil in 24 hr. through a )/4-in. choke. The production comes from a sand or porosity in the upper part of the Chalk formation of the Cretaceous age. Adams County.—The California Company drilled its National Gasoline Co. of Louisiana No. I in sec. 52, T. 7 N., R. I W., to a total depth of 10,383 ft., and at 10,280 ft, it perforated and obtained gas and a condensate. The well had several showings in the Wilcox of the Eocene age. Several of these showings were tested and the well finally was completed at 5888 ft. on Oct. 6, 1943, producing 44" gravity oil in the second sand in this formation. No other wells were completed in this field during the year. However, a number of wells are contemplated in the near future, and locations have been staked by the California Company. The Oklahoma Pipe Line Co. will market the oil through its pipe-line facilities. Wayne County.—The Gulf Refining Co. drilled Davis No. I in sec. 2, T. 9 N., R. 9 W. in Wayne County. After several stem tests 545'-in. casing was set at 6850 ft. and production was obtained in the so-called Massive Sand of the Lower Tuscaloosa. The well produced 359 bbl. of oil in 24 hr., and it Was completed on Oct. 4, 1943. Other locations have been staked ill this area and probably will be drilled in 1944 by

Spontaneous heating of coal is one of the major concerns in the coal mining industry. Hundreds of millions of tons of coal are lost each year because of spontaneous heating. If necessary arrangements are made, many fires due to spontaneous heating may be avoided. Therefore, protective measures have become essential to prevent coal from spontaneous combustion. A large amount of coal reserve can be saved by the assessment, suppression, and prediction of spontaneous heating of coal, which also helps in betterment and efficient coal production. The use of chemical retardants can act as inhibitors for the liability of coal toward spontaneous heating by increasing its ignition temperature, thereby, increasing its incubation period. The coal-chemical mixture can be used for whitewashing the exposed coal in galleries as it creates a layer between coal and oxygen in the atmosphere, delaying the oxidation process and ultimately inhibiting the spontaneous heating liability of coal. This work examines the effect of chemicals such as sodium chloride, calcium carbonate, potassium iodide, sodium nitrate, and potassium chloride on the spontaneous heating of a coal sample. Thereby, it suggests a better chemical for inhibiting the liability of coal toward spontaneous heating. The experimentation involves flammability temperature (FT), crossing point temperature (CPT), and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The ignition and oxidation temperatures were found from the above experimental methods for Lingaraj open-cast coal mine samples, with and without adding chemicals. The results are cross-checked and verified through DTA. Correlation analysis was carried out among the results obtained from CPT, DTA, and FT, and better chemical retardants that effectively inhibit coal’s tendency toward spontaneous heating were suggested.

In March 2003, Phelps Dodge started up an innovative pressure leach facility for processing copper concentrates at the Bagdad mine in Arizona. This paper describes the development of the concentrate leaching plant at Bagdad and the operational results from start up to present. Optimization efforts and an approach to mineralogical modeling of the concentrate to calculate oxygen utilization are also presented.
