"IntroductionIn the 1970s, environmental concerns and associated liabilities were a new and unknown aspect of corporate risk. Today, social concerns and the associated conflicts that they can generate constitute a rapidly expanding aspect of risk. Although not a new phenomena — the Bougainville copper mine was forced into closure in 1988 — social risk has emerged as considerably more important, and increasingly visible, in the last few years. Social risk is now an aspect of all mining activities which needs to be calculated into project assessments, and to be managed throughout the life of a project. While social risk has a number of aspects at the corporate level, such as company image and shareholder relations, at the level of the individual project, its primary component is social acceptability, and the principal tool for managing it is the Social Licence to Operate.Social Risk in Latin AmericaThroughout Latin America there are newly modernized mineral codes and economic systems introduced over the last ten years which, together with new environmental legislation, look very much like regulations in developed countries. To the corporations, the existence of these instruments means that the risks from the environmental issues associated with the project are known; they are legislated, defined, quantifiable and hence manageable.It seems ironic that, just when comprehensive regulations for the environmental management of mining have been put in place throughout Latin America, there arise an increasing number of challenges to mining activities. For, in spite of the apparent guarantees provided by these new legislative reforms, communities in Latin America today are more frequently standing up and taking exception to the presence of mining companies, or the ways in which the companies are conducting themselves. The viability of projects becomes threatened because they are considered socially unacceptable, a phenomenon that we describe as social risk. These challenges are less about opposing mining activities than many people would think. Rather, they are based on an increasing desire on the part of the local population to have some measure of control over their own future, and to participate in the development process from the earliest stages."

"The demand for fine and ultra-fine grinding associated with the processing of more challenging, finer grained orebodies and the global driver of minimising energy consumption has been an increased focus in our industry. Outotec’s stirred milling technology, the high intensity grinding mill (HIGmill™), was launched in 2012 in response to this industry need. First Quantum Minerals Ltd selected HIGmill™ technology for its Kevitsa mine in Northern Finland. The 700 kW mill is grinding copper rougher concentrate to improve copper/nickel separation and copper recovery. Selection of the HIGmill™ followed mineralogy analysis and laboratory and pilot testing for HIG milling in parallel with flotation tests to determine optimum grind size and energy input.The paper discusses the challenges and successes of the test work, manufacture, installation, commissioning and subsequent operation of the mill. Grinding performance is presented and a comparison between predicted and operating energy efficiency is made. "The mechanism of vanadium(V) V ) toxicity is still not fully understood in spite of extensive current effort (1-3). The presence of a vanadium(V) V ) -dependent NAD ( P )H oxidase in cell membranes suggests that at least one of the pathways involves oxidation of NAD(P)H (1-3). Considerable effort has therefore been devoted to finding the mechanism of NAD ( P ) H-oxidation by va¬nadium( V ) (1-19). Recently Liochev and Fridovich (4, 16) provided a critical review of vanadium( V) -stimulated NAD (P )H oxidation by plasma membranes. They out¬lined a mechanism in which vanadium(V) V )-stimulated oxidation of NAD ( P )H by biomembranes involves an O2 - initiated free radical chain reaction (4 ). While the above may be the major pathway for the vanadium-me¬diated NAD (P )H oxidation in membrane-related sys¬tems, some recent results suggest that in the presence of NADPH the flavoenzyme glutathione reductase can function as a vanadium(V) V ) reductase (18). Because of the significance of this result in relationship to the mech¬anism of vanadium( V) metabolism and the novelty of the metal-reductase behavior of a flavoenzyme, we have car¬ried out additional studies on one-electron reduction of vanadium( V) by two other, related flavoenzymes: lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin-NADPH oxidoreductase. These two enzymes were selected because they are known to catalyze a one-electron reduction of Cr ( VI ) (19-21 ), which is isoelectronic with vanadium( V ).The present study also reports on the generation of hydroxyl ( • OH) radicals in the vanadium( V) -flavoen-zyme redox system without exogenous H2O2. The • OH study was undertaken because • OH radicals are known to be generated in reactions of vanadium( IV) with H2O2 (17,18,22-27). For example, Piette and co-workers (17, 22) have studied effects of vanadium(IV) IV ) on lipid per-oxidation and NADPH oxidation and suggested that va-nadium( IV) -induced • OH radical formation may play an important role in vanadium( V) toxicity. Carmichael (25, 26) investigated the reaction between a RNA /VO 2' complex and H2O2 with a view to probe the possible re-lationship between vanadium( IV) -mediated • OH radical generation and DNA damage. He has suggested that in this reaction the • OH radical adds to the C (5) carbon of uracil, causing nucleotide damage, similar to what occurs in the nucleotide /Fe2+ / H2O2 reaction (28) and in y-irradiated aqueous solutions of nucleic acids (29 ). To our knowledge, however, there is as yet no report on ·OH radical generation in any reaction involving the reduction of vanadium ( V) by a well-characterized enzyme, without exogenous H20 2 • The present study provides evidence that ·OH radicals can form in a flavoenzyme-mediated reduction of vanadium( V) to vanadium( IV) and that this process involves also the reduction of molecular oxygen ( 0 2 ) to H20 2 • The H20 2 thus generated reacts with vanadium( IV) to produce ·OH radical, in analogy with the Fenton reaction ( Fe2 + + H20 2 - Fe3 + + OH- + ·OH)."

"In view of the increasing number of environmental regulations that have been promulgated all over the world in the last thirty years, non-ferrous smelters and refineries have had to learn and adapt to treating process bleed waste streams containing heavy metals. The result of such treatment invariably yields a gypsum-saturated solution containing salts such as alkali metal sulfates, chlorides and fluorides. Presence of anions such as sulfates, chlorides and fluorides in the discharge streams – presently not a major problem- are coming under increasing scrutiny and will have to be addressed in the near future. It is envisaged that discharge limits for sulfate ions will be in place in the near future. Treatment of brackish water to produce drinking water also results in brine streams containing alkali salts that have to be addressed for proper disposal. This paper reviews treatment options for such streams containing high levels of total dissolved solids with emphasis on sulfate removal. Areas covered would be: a) chemical treatment for removal of various constituents that make up the total dissolved solids b) processes for sulfate removal processes –thermal and non-thermal-to recover and reuse of treated water and c) brine use and treatment options.INTRODUCTIONThe rising cost of water and meeting the ever-changing stringent environmental discharge regulations make water recycling and reuse essential. The metallurgical industry has used water as a medium for dissolving and/or rejecting metals and chemicals in addition to removing thermal energy. Any excess process effluent is collected and sent to end-of-pipeline treatment and ultimately discharged to surface water for disposal under a permit. The conventional- and probably the cheapest way -of treating metal-bearing process effluent streams is lime neutralization followed by sulfide polishing for elimination of heavy metals to produce a stream that meets NPDES discharge limits. This results in a stream containing dissolved solids.These dissolved solids normally comprises of inorganic salts. The possible constituents are cations calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium. The anions are sulfate, chloride, fluoride, nitrate, carbonate and bicarbonate. In addition to these constituents, the treated effluent streams contain very small amounts of heavy metals, oxyanions such as arsenites, arsenates, selenites and selenates. Process streams from gold operations contain residual cyanide. Small amounts of ammonium ions are also present in these streams based on the pH of the solution."

"The Syama Gold Mine, located in southern Mali, was established in 1990 by Broken Hill Propriety Limited (BHP). The operation began treating oxide, and in 1994 it transitioned to processing hard and refractory ore based on ‘whole-of-ore’ roasting. In 1996, BHP was succeeded by Randgold Resources and the operation ran until 2001, when it was placed into care and maintenance.The Syama ore is classified as a double refractory ore with pyrite occluding the fine grained gold present in the ore and high levels of organic carbon presenting a challenge in terms of preg-robbing behaviour. The ore is extremely competent and this combination of metallurgical features was the main source of metallurgical problems encountered by the previous owners.Resolute Mining Limited (RML) acquired the Syama project in 2004. Following a feasibility study and the development of a revised processing flow sheet the plant was recommissioned in 2008 using a combination of old and new equipment. The revised flow sheet enabled primary sulfide ore to be treated by flotation and roasting of the concentrate to produce a calcine suitable for conventional carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing.Commissioning and ramp up of the plant was a troubled process, with monthly gold production being as low as 3000 oz in 2010. Poor availability of equipment and lower-than-forecast recoveries were the primary contributors.During the last five years, RML has utilised a systematic approach to improve production, focusing on mechanical reliability, metallurgical recovery and process bottlenecks. Modifications to the circuit have been as a result of both innovation and the application of technological improvements. Improvements have been made to the flotation, roasting and CIL circuits and RML has introduced a deslime circuit to treat flotation concentrate, in addition to the very successful commissioning of a new 1 Mt/a oxide circuit in December 2014. These changes have resulted in gold production increasing to more than 20 000 oz per month in 2015.This paper presents the processes, change implementation and outcomes of the modifications made to the sulfide circuit to address the availability and recovery problems.Apart from the expansion of an existing, world-class deposit and discovery of new resources, future improvements on the path to a class-leading gold mine include the continued reduction of the unit cash cost, increase in overall sulfide circuit gold recovery, increased throughput through continued innovation and consistency in the plant’s operation.Citation:Sinclair, R, Hunter, I and Landwehr, D, 2016. Debido que el subproducto en la etapa de lixiviación de las calcinas de zinc, alcanza un 18% de plomo y 40% de plata en la refinería de Cajamarquilla, es necesario la recuperación de sus elementos valiosos a través de un procedimiento hidrometalúrgico donde se obtengan extracciones en plomo y plata del orden de 85% respectivamente. En este sentido, el texto señala la solubilidad del plomo y la plata en una solución con excesos de iones cloruros y así someter al residuo a una lixiviación ácido clorurante de altas temperaturas y con presencia de un agente oxidante. Una vez obtenida la solución, se divide el plomo y la plata por cementaciones sucesivas con polvo de zinc. Finalmente, se determina la factibilidad del procedimiento para la extracción de los elementos valiosos del residuo y se disminuye los costos de la refinación del zinc.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the effectiveness of automatic water sprinkler systems on the suppression of incipient and propagating conveyor belt fires under ventilated conditions. Large-scale experiments were performed at airflows ranging from 1.1 to 4.6 m/s. In incipient fire experiments with 100°C, standard-response sprinklers installed above and between the belts, the sprinklers activated later, the peak heat release rates were larger, and more belting was consumed at the higher airflow. In similar experiments with 74 °C, fast-response sprinklers, the sprinklers activated at the same heat release rate for both high and low airflows, but the peak heat release rate and amount of belting consumed was slightly higher at the lower airflow. In incipient fire experiments with sprinklers located only above the top belt, the heat release rate and amount of belting consumed was larger at the higher airflow. The propagating fire experiments showed that sprinklers located above and between the belts were effective in stopping flame propagation. Peak heat release rates and amount of belting consumed were larger at the higher airflows for both the 74 °C, fast-response and 100 °C, standard-response sprinklers. The sprinklers were equally effective at each airflow.

"Abstract The Deep Mixing Method (DMM) represents a viable solution to improve the adverse geotechnical properties of foundation soils. Differences and the importance of performing pre-construction laboratory and field tests will be highlighted. Comparative analyses and interpretations between the various lab and field stages, along with accumulated information about soil properties and QC results, allowed fine-tuning of the production parameters throughout almost the entire project.Two projects where the US Army Corps of Engineers selected the Deep Mixing Method (DMM) for the required stabilizations, and a third project completed in Italy, will be illustrated:•,?the LPV 111 Project (New Orleans - LA – USA); DMM was used for groundimprovement/foundation strengthening and consequently stabilize and support the burden of the new levee.•,the Rio Puerto Nuevo Project (San Juan - PR - USA); DMM was applied to improve the soils adjacent to a 90” forced sewer main relocation and to improve the soils for the base of a new drainage channel•,the new Italian high speed railway project (Florence Italy); DMM technology was applied to realize a a TBM break in/break out, foreseen originally by jet-grouting.IntroductionThe Deep Mixing Method (DMM) represents a viable solution to improve the adverse geotechnical properties of foundation soils. The effectiveness of working parameters depends largely on the physical and mechanical properties of the soil to be treated. El presente artículo describe la situación del plomo y los problemas que enfrenta nivel mundial. El plomo tiene una serie de características físicas y químicas que lo hacen deseable para muchos usos industriales; es blando, maleable, y puede mezclarse fácilmente para formar aleaciones. Es a partir de 1956 donde el consumo de plomo en los Estados Unidos aumentó a 40% en el uso de la industria automovilística. Posteriormente, entre 1950 y 1956 esta industria decrece y los siguientes 30 años mostraron a los Estados Unidos como un gran productor de plomo. Sin embargo, la situación ha ido cambiando y dicho país de autosuficiente, ha pasado a ser dependiente de la producción foránea. La principal causa de esta declinación es que con el incremento del consumo, su industria minera no ha podido mantener el paso y aún más ha decrecido, así como los costos de producción y la disminución de sus reservas. Por ello, las medidas que se tomaron fueron la inclusión de fondos, que eran disponibles para sus compras de plomo y zinc, de forma que los mineros americanos obtengan una especie de subsidio que les permita seguir operando.

ECONOMISTS have predicted that the present business depression ultimately may pay big dividends to industry through the cumulative savings resulting from technical improvements and merchandising advances that might never have been developed under normal conditions. Waste prevention is a sound medicine for economic ills. In theory, this prescription may be applied not' only to raw materials, but also to labor, fuel, over- head, and other phases of production. Actually, how- ever, regardless of the efficiency of operating practices, waste is inevitable in the production of many commodities. The problem then becomes one of profitable utilization of waste rather than prevention.

"In this study, we show the successful separation of rare earth metals, which are indispensable elements for the high-tech industry, from a solution containing a metal mixture by using a liquid-liquid extraction and liquid membrane based on ionic liquids. We employed newly synthesized N, Ndioctyldiglycol amic acid (DODGAA) as an extractant for rare earth metals. The DODGAA exhibited a high affinity for rare earth metals such as Y, Nd, Eu and Dy and the extraction efficiency was greatly enhanced in ionic liquids (ILs). Furthermore, stripping of the metals was readily achieved by using an acid solution. INTRODUCTIONRare-earth metals have important applications in cutting-edge technologies employed in the electronics, information technology, and automobile industries. As Japan does not have many natural metal resources, maintaining a steady supply of imported rare-earth metals is important. The total amount of rareearth metals imported into Japan was 19,000 tons/year in 1996, and this amount increased to 40,000 tons/year over the following decade (Kramer 2010). Japan is now one of the world’s major importers of rare-earth metals (Kramer 2010). However, more than 90% of the rare-earth metals imported into Japan come from China, the world’s leading supplier of rare-earth metal resources, due to their low costs. This situation made us realize the importance of a second resource of rare-earth metals: “urban mines” or discarded electronic waste. Rare-earth metals are generally separated from their natural ores by solvent extraction. However, since urban mines have different metals and the concentrations of rare-earth metals are usually low, highly efficient separation and recovery methods are required for rare-earth metals.Recently, ionic liquids (ILs), which are molten salts at room temperature, have attracted considerable attention since they are novel, environmentally friendly solvents (Kubota & Goto, 2006; Han & Armstrong, 2007). The use of ILs in liquid-liquid extraction of rare-earth metals has been reported (Kubota et al., 2012). In some cases, the IL-based systems showed better extraction ability and selectivity than those showed by the conventional organic solvent extraction systems(Nakashima et al., 2003, 2005; Hirayama et al., 2008; Fang et al., 2012). Therefore, more efficient solvent extraction processes by using ILs can be developed. In this study, we investigated solvent extraction processes in which ILs are employed and discuss the possibility of using ILs in the separation and recovery of rare-earth metals from electronic waste."

This review was initially motivated by the author’s own experience in attempting to reconcile run-of mine production tons with the Coal Resource and Reserve estimation of mineable, in-situ tonnages. The primary scientific measurements and observations that are collected during exploration at the beginning of the value chain will have a profound effect on the future of the mining operation. Due diligence must be exercised during the planning of a new mine and during the life of an existing mine. The comments provided by the technical and economic assessment group of Venmyn Deloitte confirmed the need for this critical review. They found the reporting of Coal Resources in South Africa to be inconsistent. This was particularly problematic in the Waterberg Coalfield in Limpopo Province. In this coalfield there are two types of coal deposit present. The first is comprised of the thick intercalated, cyclic coal and shale/mudstone sequences of the Volksrust Formation. This overlies multiple coal seams within the Vryheid Formation, each of which is thick enough to be extracted as an individual raw coal unit. On the other hand, the interbedded coal and shale seams of the Volksrust Formation require beneficiation to separate the coal from the shale. The review examines practices and methods, investigates alternatives, provides checks and balances, and tests these against actual production reconciliations. In conclusion, the best estimates of the mineable, in-situ tonnage will be obtained from the air-dry raw material density. These estimates should be adjusted afterwards to allow for free moisture content. The adjustments are derived from reconciliation data. The greatest contributing factor to the over-estimation of Reserve tonnages is the moisture content of the raw material. This fluctuates significantly under varying conditions in situ, as well as upon exposure to the natural environment. The air-dried density of the raw material includes inherent (structurally bound) moisture within the matrix. It provides credible tonnage estimations of raw material available while also providing an indication of voids within the volume of material being assessed. The calculated solids percentage can be used to adjust the specific gravity, which is determined via the Archimedes principle. This will supply a representative estimate of the material to be mined.

"While the American Exploration & Mining Association (AEMA) was preparing to close one chapter and begin another during its annual conference in Spokane, WA Dec. 3-7, word of a significant victory on an issue that has been important to the association for many years came from the halls of Washington, D.C.During a keynote address on Dec. 6, Joe Balash, assistant secretary of Land and Minerals Management for the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), told a sold-out lunch crowd that the DOI had released final drafts of proposed revisions to the Obama-era greater sage grouse conservation plans. The revisions suggest removing hundreds of thousands of acres of federally protected habitat in Utah, and easing restrictions on energy development and other activities, including mining, in Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming.The protections of the sage grouse were put in place by the Obama administration in 2015. The sage grouse, a prairie fowl, is considered by conservationists to be a key indicator species for the health of America’s sagebrush ecosystem. The previous plan to protect the ground-dwelling bird imposed restrictions to development in sage grouse habitat, but did not place the birds on the endangered species list — a move that many believed would have imposed far more rigid rules.AEMA, and its executive director Laura Skaer, led the way in the fight against the Obama-era greater sage grouse plan, arguing that the plan unnecessarily hurt economic development.“We were the first organization to point out that the greater sage grouse was being used to stop mining, oil and gas production and grazing on public lands in the interior mountain west,” said Skaer who is retiring from AEMA with a significant legal win on this front. “Early on, we cautioned that the proposed Land Use Plan Amendments would be worse than a listing (of the sage grouse) under the Endangered Species Act. Very few believed us until they saw the plans with all of the restrictions and the recommendation for a 4-million-ha (10-million-acre) withdrawal from mineral entry. We were the only organization that filed comments on all 88 Land Use Plan Amendments in 11 states covering more than 24.2 million ha (60 million acres).”"

The paper presents the results of the research on the development of gravity concentrates processing technology (gold grade is from 50 g/t to 1 kg/t and over) using intensive cyanidation with gold recovery to pregnant solutions followed by precipitation of metals from them using various methods. Test work and pilot plant results confirm that a new developed hydrodynamic regime provides an efficient treatment of gravity concentrates of polydisperse composition without their grinding and preliminary desliming. The resulting pregnant and washing solutions are amenable to metals recovery using electrowinning, cementation onto zinc dust and CIS. Cone plants with a lower ball valve for cyanidation of unground gravity concentrates developed by IRGIREDMET JSC have been successfully tested at a number of Russian operations. Currently, a modular plant equipped with gold electric precipitation from pregnant solution unit is successfully operated at a Russian gold processing plant. Cyanidation of the resulting high-grade gravity concentrate is carried out at the concentration of 8-10 g/L NaCN and 10 g/L NaOH. Gold recovery to the solution is 97-98%. Electrowinning is carried out in flow cell GNC-40M. In this case, the residual gold concentration yield is 0.3-0.5 mg/L. Also, a modular plant for relatively low-grade middlings (50-100 g/t Au) of gravity concentration has been introduced. The concentration of NaCN and NaOH is 2-3 g/L and 1.5-2 g/L, respectively, during leaching. This plant is equipped with a unit for gold cementation from pregnant solution with zinc dust. This cementation unit is of original design. It is made in the form of a filtering device and is composed of several layers of carbon fiber which contacts with zinc powder. The residual gold concentration yield from a cementation unit is less than 0.1 mg/L. Gold recovery is 93-97%. In 2017-2018, the introduction of intensive cyanidation modular plants to gravity concentrates will be planned at new projects of Russia and the CIS.

IT is the purpose of this essay to give a reasonably complete description of shaft sinking under a rock pentice in a small Northern Ontario gold property. Hallnor is in many ways an exceptional mine, but the sinking operations here described are but typical examples of the excellent practice for which Canadian mines and mining engineers are justly famous the world over. The worth of the subject lies, therefore, nor in its originality, but in its soundness; not in the spectacular, but in the economical and safe. Attention is particularly drawn to the excellent safety record and to the exceptionally low overall sinking cost. INTRODUCTION Prior to April, 1939, the Hallnor No. 1 shaft had been sunk vertically to a depth of 997 feet below the surface. It is a three-compartment shaft, 19 ft. 10 in. by 7ft. 7 in. outside the timbers (see Figure 1).

The overall purpose of this research was to improve the understanding of how the post disaster seismic location system works, what determines the signal size, what is the character of the seismic noise, how well the system can detect blows from a trapped miner, and how well the source of the blows can be located. Based on an improved understanding of the system, improvements were suggested in the seismic subarray configuration, and in the system deployment procedures. An important part of this research was to become familiar with the seismic system operation and to work with the Westinghouse Electric Corporation and MSHA personnel to modify and improve the system. To accomplish this we participated in the planning, execution, and data analysis for a number of seismic field tests. Several in-mine field tests were conducted. From these tests the capabilities of an in-mine seismic system were analyzed and specifications were made for designing an operational in-mine system. Several portions of the work done on this grant were covered in previous reports. In particular the capabilities or the presently operational surface based seismic location system has been thoroughly documented by Durkin and Greenfield (1981). Portions of the location procedures and effects of mine openings on seismic signals have also previously been published. These portions or the work will only be summarized in this final report.

Block or panel caving technology is far removed from that of the top slicing and block caving of the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries. The rapid mechanisation and expansion of these methods in the late twentieth century was as much a result of the change of the technology of the unit operations of development, ground support, drilling and blasting and transport as it was of the advances in geotechnical understanding and practice. The small footprint gravity and scraper block caving mines with boundary weakening, rail transport and shaft hoisting of the early to mid-twentieth century have been replaced by massive high lift panel caves using preconditioning of the ore, large load-haul-dump units, adjacent crushers and conveyors to surface. With the pioneering spirit, Canada's natural resources have been and are creating economic revolutions.Western Canada oil and natural gas rank high on the list of such revolutions. Calgary, your meeting place today, is the birthplace of this economic revolution, one that has already sharply altered the economy .of the middle half of Canada, particularly that of Alberta; is increasingly making its weight felt on the economy of all Canada; and is helping re-shape world thinking on sources of vital petroleum supply for both peace and war. Calgary is today the 'operation headquarters' for the great bulk of a huge exploration and development programme that now extends over a quarter of a million square miles of Canada's West. As a Calgarian, •therefore, I am particularly happy to have this privilege of talking about oil and natural gas to members of the C.I.M.M., who play a key role in the development of all Canada's varied natural resources."

This paper discusses prospecting for lode gold and lists the principal lags and. regulations pertaining to locating; lode claims on public lands. It is a preprint of a part of a bulletin being prepared by the United States Bureau o Mines entitled "Equipping, Developing and Operating Small Gold Mines". The increased interest in gold mining manifested during the past few years (1932-1935) bas stimulated prospecting. Many adventurers have taken to the field to search for now gold deposits. A. large percentage of them have had no previous experience in prospecting for lode gold; this paper has been written with the tope that it might assist these newcomers.
