A numerical study of the developing fluid flow and thermal aspects during the staning phase of aluminum continuous casting processes is presented. The deforming finite element method, coupled with a quasi-Lagrangian formulation, is used to represent the growth of an ingot and the dynamic fluid flow and thermal behavior that evolves in the growing ingot. The mathematical formulation of the problem and the numerical treatment are discussed. The algorithm solves the free moving nodes as part of total unknowns with an automatic time step control for time integration. This permits an optimal computing efficiency while still keeping the computational errors under control. A selection of the results obtained using the algorithm is presented. The results are concerned with the evolution of fluid flow, temperature and solidification phenomena during a DC round ingot casting process, as it evolves from the beginning of casting operation to a steady state. These results show that the time-varying, complex fluid flow and thermal phenomena during continuous casting processes can be very well represented by the computational algorithm. The results also illustrate that, during the casting process, ~e fluid flow and temperature fields change drastically at the initial stage but evolve slowly afterwards

As ligas titânio beta têm sido desenvolvidas devido as suas excelentes combinações de boas propriedades mecânicas e alta resistência a ambientes corrosivos. Novas ligas de titânio ao nióbio estão em desenvolvimento e apresentam grande potencial de aplicação em diversas áreas da engenharia. O presente estudo tem como objetivo verificar propriedades mecânicas da liga Ti42Nb2Sn na condição deformada e também envelhecida. Um lote de amostras foi laminado a frio com 80% de encruamento e outro lote foi laminado e envelhecido na temperatura de 400 °C durante 48 horas. Foram realizados ensaios de tração, medidas de dureza, metalografia e microscopia das superfícies de fratura. Foi possível observar baixo valor de módulo de elasticidade e alta ductilidade para a amostra deformada e alta dureza e módulo de elasticidade para a amostra envelhecida.

Can your company afford to issue a check today for $100,000, $500,000, $2,000,000, or $22,000,000? This is what it might cost your company if it is on the losing end of a product liability suit. During the past 10 to 15 years, the number of product liability actions has grown from a handful per year level to a hundreds of thousands per year level. Settlements and awards in the tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars are not unusual in these days. The largest award that the authors haw heard about is a case involving a private airplane and the death of four men, which was awarded over $22,000,000. In the materials handling field, a fork lift truck, ordered with an overhead guard, was delivered without a guard because one was not available at the time. An accident with serious personal injury followed. Wouldn't it have been better to have waited until the guard was available before delivering the unit? Answer: a quarter of a million dollars better -- the cost of the settlement. Hoisting devices are also not without their liability precedents. In a 1960 case, an employee was injured when a load abruptly fell from a hoist. It was determined that the operator could not possibly have caused such a fall had the hoist been functioning properly. The case was compounded when the manufacturer of the hoist contended that the load had been improperly connected to the device, since the same hoist was used to remove the weight from the injured man without another malfunction.

"Heavy metal containing residues are typically hazardous wastes because on the one hand, a deposition gets more and more complicated and on the other hand, the large amounts of metals like Zn, Cu, Fe and Pb represent a significant value. Thus, a post-treatment of these materials with the recovery/recycling of the metals and stabilization of the waste is not only ecological but often also economical. The therefore typically applied recycling processes utilize pyrometallurgical steps, where carbon or carbon monoxide from fossil coal and coke is used as a reducing agent, which results in large amounts of CO2 emissions. An alternative option is the application of a hydrogen-rich gas emitted in biomass utilization processes as a carbon-neutral reducing agent. Investigations in a retort process which were done at different temperatures and times showed excellent results concerning the achievable reduction rates and final contents of the heavy metals for various residues.IntroductionNowadays heavy metal containing residues like electric arc furnace dust (EAFD), dust from cupola furnaces, waelz slag, etc. are declared as hazardous wastes in a growing number of countries due to the leachability of the heavy metals in these residues. For that reason it is no longer possible to landfill these materials or use them for road construction or disposal works. Some land filling activities, carried out until now, have only been realizable because of some process modifications or cost intensive post-treatment steps of these residues. But the disposal capacities for such materials are decreasing, therefore increasing the prices. The second point for the growing disposal limitations is the stringent environmental legislations and regulations, which restrict the number and amounts of materials which can be dumped [1 – 5].From the other point of view these heavy metal containing residues usually have high contents of zinc, lead, iron, etc., which represent a significant value and therefore a big potential to recover these metals. This is why in recent years the number of recycling processes and the amount of recycled heavy metal containing residues have continuously increased. These recycling processes have the target to recover the valuable metals from the residual materials in the form of a saleable product as well as the stabilization of the slag produced in these processes [5, 6]."

No presente trabalho, poli (tereftalato de etileno) virgem (PETV) e pós-consumo (PETPC) foram aditivados com um oligômero multifuncional estirênico-acrílico-epóxi (Joncryl POLYAD PR 002) comercializado como extensor de cadeia para polímeros de condensação como o PET, visando avaliar o comportamento da massa molar destes polímeros durante o processamento. PETV e PETPC, com e sem a incorporação do aditivo, foram preparados em misturador interno Haake Rheomix, com rotores tipo roller, empregando diferentes níveis do extensor de cadeia. As massas molares foram estimadas a partir de medições de torque e temperatura. Os resultados mostram que as estimativas com base em medições de torque em tempo real foi um indicador rápido e preciso da eficácia da extensão da cadeia do PET. O aditivo extensor de cadeia compensou a perda de massa molar durante o processamento, o efeito foi afetado pelo nível de aditivo presente.

Kimberlite weathering has been a topic of ongoing research within De Beers for many years. Using kimberlite weathering as an alternative to crushing has many advantages e.g. power and reducing diamond breakage. Weathering could also possibly be used in conjunction with crushing just to weaken the material and reduce power consumption. These forces have driven current research to investigate whether kimberlite weathering could be utilised for these reasons. Weathering in this context does not refer to weathering over long period of time but rather to disintegration of the material in aqeous media in relative short time periods. Previous published work discussed that the presence of smectite renders kimberlite weatherable and that the amount of smectite determines the rate of weathering (Morkel and Vermaak, 2006). The current work investigates whether cation ex-change or the adsorption of organic species in the smectite interlayer could influence the observed weathering behaviour. The results show that cation exchange does take place in the presence of cation species and that the weathering behaviour can be drastically improved with especially Cu2+ cations. Concentration and time effects of the weathering was also investigated. Weathering tests with organic species such as ethanol, methanol, edta, pentanol, butanol, acetic acid and oxalic acid was performed. The results show that organic species does improve weathering but under these testing conditions was not as effective as cations.

Dissolution of gold with elemental bromine was studied by using a rotating disc technique. The main parameters studied were: bromine concentration, stirring speed, pH, and temperature. Additionally, effect of copper, iron, and manganese was also examined. A special attention was paid to elucidate the role of cations, primarily Na+, during gold dissolution. It was found that gold dissolution with bromine was characterized with two pH regions. Below pH=7, gold dissolution was independent of pH, and above this value, gold dissolution decreased with pH increase. Gold dissolution rates were proportional with concentration of bromine. Two regions, diffusional and kinetic, were observed with respect to stirring speed. with respect to the role of Na+, and cations in general, they play absolutely no role during gold dissolution with bromine, unless they are in their lower oxidation state and become oxidized by bromine. In that case they have a negative effect because of bromine consumption.

Although numerous investigations have been performed over the years to predict the behavior and bearing capacity of piles, the mechanisms of these behavior and bearing capacity of piles have yet to be entirely understood. Bearing capacity is difficult to predict, because it is affected by many parameters, which have complex relationship with each other. The present paper describes the application of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) in dynamic load tests to predict the resistance of driven piles. The tip, shaft, and total pile resistances can be predicted only for piles with available corresponding measurements of these values. The design methodology composed of ANN and genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to find the optimal neural network model to predict pile resistance. The results of this study indicate that the neural network model serves as a reliable and simple tool for predicting the capacity of driven piles.

The Australian coal industry has undergone sevenfold growth over the last 30 years and since 1985 has been the world's largest coal exporter. Three quarters of Australia's coal production is exported so its future is dependent on it remaining internationally competitive with other energy sources and other coal exporting countries. Coal is likely to increase its share of the energy market during the nine- ties as oil prices increase, new coal-fired capacity is commissioned and some form of nuclear energy is developed which is of acceptable safety standards to the community for use in the 21st century. Gas may take a part of coal's anticipated market share by the Year 2000. While coal exports will increase from China, Colombia, Indonesia and Venezuela and satisfy some of this additional coal demand Australia will also expand its export production, due to its existing advantages. The United States, Canada, South Africa, Poland and USSR seem unlikely to enjoy the same degrees of expansion and some, particularly Poland and USSR, will decline. Australia will always find it difficult to compete in the more distant markets due to levels of ocean freight, although its high quality coals will tend to partly offset such disadvantage.

Two molten salt systems were evaluated as electrolytes for the repetitive recovery of tungsten from tungsten oxide (W03) made by calcining commercial-grade ammonium paratungstate. Using a sodium chloride-sodium fluoride-potassium aluminum tetrafluoride electrolyte at 800° C, 1 pound of 99.8 percent tungsten was recovered for each 2.7 kilowatt-hours of energy consumed. The metal contained 1,100 ppm carbon, was in dendritic masses of spherical grains, and had an apparent bulk density of 5.41 g/cm3. T ngsten of 99.9 percent purity was won from a sodium pyrophosphate-sodium tetraborate-sodium chloride electrolyte at 1,000° C; 6.0 kilowatt-hours of energy was consumed for each pound of metal recovered. The metal contained 120 ppm carbon, was in dendritic masses of hexagonal acicular crystals, and had an apparent bulk density of 7.25 g/cm . Each metallic impurity--aluminum, calcium, copper, iron, nickel, and silicon--in the two tungsten products was 16 ppm or less.

Continuous development of lead recycling technologies has driven the increasing contribution of secondary lead in battery manufacturing over the years. This review presents and compares the different technologies available for pyrometallurgical processing of secondary lead materials. Smelting is most often achieved in reverberatory, blast, rotary or electric arc furnaces, using single or two stage routes. Thermal re fining is the most common technique used for the production of lead and its alloys. Some improvements in battery breaking technologies and emission control have also specifically contributed to improve the performance of the smelting and refining units. Recycling lead is facing the challenge of increasing production while meeting more and more stringent regulations. This review will also include an analysis of the current secondary lead market as well as an economic outlook for the years to come in regards to rapidly changing environmental standards.

The Kwinana Industrial Area (KIA) is by far the largest and most diverse industrial processing region (with supporting industries) in Western Australia. As with elsewhere in Australia (and globally), the KIA is facing sustainability challenges on various fronts, such as increasing water and energy scarcity, climate change, an aging workforce, and growing community expectations. Through the Kwinana Industries Council (KIC) the industries within Kwinana are working closely on common issues in the KIA, including the sustainable development of the region. Over the past decade, significant progress has been made by the industries towards the improvement of the sustainability performance at the company and regional level. Given the ever increasing sustainability pressures, there is strong desire to address sustainability challenges in the KIA, through a pro-active and collaborative industry approach. A sustainability roadmap is being developed to assist the KIC and its industry members with strategic decision making on the long-term sustainability of there. At the heart of the roadmap is a set of key performance indicators for each of seven priority themes or focus areas (water use, by-products produced, greenhouse gas emissions and energy use, economic performance, environment, community impacts and sustainable workforce). Aspirational targets and subsequent strategies are being developed for those activities where the KIC has an influence and can make a positive impact. The indicators and their targets enable constructive stakeholder discussions (eg with government and community) on emerging local issues and possible future directions for the KIA. The paper will report on the development process and the preliminary results of the sustainability roadmap for the KIA, including a historical perspective on milestones achieved so far and future aspirations.

NIOSHAn accelerated testing procedure developed by the Bureau of Mines for evaluating commercially available corrosion inhibitors is described. Ultra-sonic agitation of the corrodent solutions and the hot-finished mild steel test coupons was used to evaluate the effects of several variables on the effectiveness of two corrosion inhibitors. Small changes in the weight of the test coupons in both controlled and inhibited corrodents, before and after exposure, affected the precision and accuracy of the results. Minute amounts of oxygen in the systems were found to be causing the relatively large deviations in the corrosion developed in the controlled tests. Microscopic examination of the test coupons revealed that both surface preparation and internal strains resulting from fabrication methods materially affect corrosion behavior.

"The mechanism of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis is not ye: clear. Recent studies have shown that alveolar macrophages (AM) can be stimulated by bleomycin in vitro releasing inflammatory cytokines, suggesting that the interaction of bleomycin with AM is an important step in the drug-induced fibrotic process. Bleomycin is known to bind DNA and generate oxygen radicals through complexation with Fe2+ and oxygen. To provide,more insight into the cellular oxidative property of bleomycin, v.s have developed a fluoromicroscopic method using 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFHDA) as an oxidative fluorescence probe to study the deomycin-induced intracellular oxidation in rat AM and the inhibition of the oxida¬tion by taurine, a compound known to inhibit the bleomycin-induced fibrosis. Bleomycin at 5 to 20 ug/ml has a moderate stimulatory effect (1.87- to 2.66-fold) on the secretion of superoxide anion. A high concentration of bleomycin (20 ug/ml), however, inhibits cell response to zymosan-induced secretion of superoxide anion. At 4 ug/ml, bleomycin has no effect on cell membrane integrity or morphology but results in a significant increase in intracellular oxidation. This oxidative process is Fe2-,-dependent and is accompanied by an increase in intracellular calcium (35 nM). Both the intracellular oxidation and calcium rise induced by internalized bleomycin are inhibited by pretreatment of cells with varying concentrations of taurine (25, 125, and 187.5 uM). The inhibitory effect on intracellular oxidation .vas found to be 36, 57, and 60%, respectively. These results demonstrate a stimulation-inhibition relationship between bleomycin and taurine on re cellular oxidation at a subcytotoxic dose of bleomycin, suggesting that the oxidative effect of the intracellular bleomycin-Fe2 complex is important in the initiation of the fibrotic process. — Environ Health Perspect 102 (Suppl10):91-96 (1994) IntroductionThe pulmonary system is most susceptible to oxygen radical-induced diseases due to its constant exposure to the highest oxygen tension, and the potential encounters with oxidant gases such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, and toxic doses of dust particles. The introduction of "high-tech" materials such as new polymer composites presents significant competitive challenges and opportunities in conventional mineral markets. Moreover, rapid advances in materials science are critical to the resolution of important economic and strategic issues, including national competitiveness and import dependence. This Bureau of Mines study examines the displacement of conventional nonfuel mineral materials by certain new materials, specifically advanced plastics and ceramics. Analyses of substitution by plastics are conducted for five major U.S. industrial sectors: motor vehicle manufacturing, aerospace applications, building and construction, packaging, and heavy machinery production. Based on interviews with more than 60 scientists, executives, and other professionals engaged in materials development and sales, forecasts of substitution by plastics during the 1990's are made for aluminum, steel, and glass. In addition to these forecasts, study findings identify key factors that will influence the emergence of advanced materials in the next decade.

Feedwells play a pivotal role in gravity thickeners, governing flow distribution, feed dilution, and flocculation condition during solid–liquid separation. This study presents an optimized design and digital prototyping framework for FLSmidth’s E-volute and E-Duc Feedwell systems, integrating advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with quantitative criteria introduced at SME2024. Building on established FLS technologies, a series of novel configurations were developed and systematically assessed under full-scale and site-specific conditions. CFD provided quantitative insight into flow distribution, feed dilution, and flocculation efficiency, enabling iterative refinement of design parameters. The optimized feedwell demonstrated superior hydraulic performance, enhanced mixing, and improved flocculation outcomes. Beyond the specific design advances, the work highlights CFD as an effective and economical tool for digital prototyping, facilitating early identification of design limitations, reducing dependence on physical trials, and accelerating innovation. The methodology underscores the value of simulation-driven design in advancing feedwell performance and improving thickener technology.

Quality control (QC) of reverse circulation drill sampling commonly involves regular duplicate subsampling to monitor the extent of imprecision or random error in the subsampling system. In gold mining in Australia, the subsampling tool is usually a cone splitter.Other sources of error, including delimitation error and bias (systematic error) in the subsampler are often assumed to be negligible or ignored for being too difficult to QC.This paper describes actual sampling errors and error mitigation based on quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of surface and underground reverse circulation drill sampling at a high-nugget gold mine at Sunrise Dam, Western Australia.CITATION:Carswell, J T and Sutton, K, 2014. There are a number of high grade niobium deposits worldwide which have been deemed untreatable by flotation due to the very fine grained nature of the in situ pyrochlore, the primary niobium bearing mineral. A known method of recovering extremely fine particles is through the use of chelating reagents such as hydroxamic acids which have a strong affinity for transition metals. However, one of the major issues in the flotation of niobium bearing minerals using hydroxamic acids is the corresponding recovery of other transition metal gangue minerals including magnetite, hematite, and pyrite. In order to better understand the differences in behavior of niobium and iron bearing minerals in flotation with benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) and sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) at a range of pulp temperatures, a Box-Behnken experimental design was employed. Regression models for the global recovery of iron indicated that iron mineral recovery was significantly influenced by both BHA and SHMP dosage. Upon examinination of flotation products by semi-quantitative XRD, it was observed that recovery of iron oxide and sulphide minerals (hematite, magnetite, goethite, and pyrite) was problematic at high benzohydroxamic acid dosage, while sodium hexametaphosphate was mainly helpful for carbonate mineral depression. Iron rich carbonates (likely an iron rich dolomite) largely reported to the tails with increased SHMP dosage.

Electrical resistance heating to effect thermal fragmentation of semiconductive rock was examined by the Bureau of Mines. Tests were carried out on copper-bearing ores of the Nonesuch Shale Formation in the laboratory and in the the field at White Pine, Mich. Fieldwork included primary and secondary breakage tests. Heating tests on in situ rock failed to produce thermal dam-age to an extent considered useful; however, boulders up to 30 ft3 were effectively broken by the method. Power input to the test rock was taken from a 50-kV, 5-amp dc power supply.

Scattered outliers of the Chibougamau Formation and the more continuous Mistassini and Otish Groups lie unconformably on an Archean basement abutting the Grenville Front. All the Aphebian rocks are deformed and offset by faulting related to the Front. The older Chibougamau Formation is exclusively elastic in origin, whereas the two later, time-equivalent groups include carbonatedominated (Mistassini) and elastic (Otish) sequences. Known syngenetic mineralization within these formations is limited to various radioactive showings in the Mistassini and Otish elastics, and the iron formations of the upper Mistassini Group. Three distinct types of epigenetic mineralization occur within the sedimentary rocks; pitchblende fracture fillings in all types of rocks in the Otish Group, widespread Mississippi-Valley type galenasphalerite showings at certain levels in the Mistassini Group, and chalcopyrite-pyrite bearing veins in or near argillaceous horizons of the Mistassini Group and Chibougamau Formation. The Otish elastic basin is part of a large area of the central Ungava peninsula which contains a variety of radioactive showings, the most promising being of the unconformity type, The final control for many individual showings appears to be local physico-chemical changes within faults and fracture zones. The overall structural control is in part supplied by the faulting episode related to the Grenville Front, which in turn limits the mineralization to the depth zone appropriate for open fracturing. The lead-zinc showings exhibit a strong stratigraphic control as well as close ties to secondary porosity developed by f aulting. The ore solutions were probably derived during the low grade metamorphism of the formations. Chalcopyrite- pyrite veins have provi ded the only mine production (Icon Mine) to date. They appear later than the low-grade metamorphic fluid circulation, and deposition is related to favourable structures and stratigraphy. The veins are clearly related to major faults. Thus, whereas stratigraphic settings appropriate to individual types of deposits are important, an overall structural setting may be demonstrated for a wide range of mineralizations. Detailed structural interpretations of individual showings may be the most fruitful pursuit in developing a concrete prospecting model.
