"Banded iron formations are the major iron source for producing high grade concentrate. BIF are generally lower grade and more difficult to extract. In order to know how best to process BIF ore, it require comprehensive knowledge on ore bodies even in the early stages of the mining process. Geometallurgy combines geological and mineral processing information and allows for higher flexibility in response to changes in the plant feed when mining different parts of the ore. This can lead to economic benefits, owing to improved plant operation, yet is time consuming and correspondingly costly. The main focus of this paper work has been to develop a comprehensive geometallurgical testing framework for developing Yogi BIF low grade magnetite deposit located at Western Australia. In order to provide successful geometallurgical mapping, was collected data from several different disciplines (geology, chemistry, mineralogy) and parameters (physical properties, metallurgical response and geotechnical measurements) during drilling activities and test work. The investigation shown magnetic separation behavior of material had high variation and is most important element in the proper design of ore beneficiation plant. This paper provides an improved and efficient magnetic separation test methods used for the investigation of separation behavior and variability of the Yogi Ore deposit and evaluates their applicability and potential in the geometallurgical context. In this paper a small-scale magnetic separation has been developed that allows estimating from single pass separation test using small amounts of sample material. Verification of the evaluation method and validation was done with different mineral systems."

The chemistry of selenium and tellurium is discussed , along with a method of preparing a synthetic oilfield brine , an oilfield brine sampling method , and methods for determining selenium and tellurium in complex oilfield brines . Selenium either can be reduced to the elemental form with sulfur dioxide and determined semiquantitatively by color comparison of the red amorphous form or can be converted to selenite and determined quantitatively by reacting it with 3,3 ' - diaminobenzidine and obtaining its spectral absorbance at 420 mu . Tellurium can be reduced to the elemental form with hypophosphorous acid , and the spectral absorbance of its red hydrosol can be measured at 400 mu . Less than 0.05 mg / 1 of selenium and 0.1 mg / 1 of tellurium can be determined by the described methods .

"Contact-angle and flotation techniques were used to evaluate the influence of oxygen - both that inherent in the coal and that introduced by ambient temperature, aqueous oxidation - on a wide range of coal ranks. Oxidation was found to decrease the hydrophobicity and floatability of coal; with the effect being minor for coals of high rank but becoming increasingly important as the rank of coal is reduced. As an approximation, oxidation makes a coal behave as if it were one of lower rank. Frother only flotation' of coal· correlates with the captive-bubble contact angle whereas when oil is used as a collector, the flotation appears to follow the pattern shown by the water sessile drop on a fresh, un-reagentized coal surface. Coal recovery lost through oxidation may often be recovered by use of a variety of collectors, of which No. 2 foe! oil is among the best of those reagents tested. A simple alkali-extraction test may be used to estimate the influence of oxidation on coal preparation processes and use.INTRODUCTIONThe hydrophobicity of coal is not only a function of its rank but also of the extent of oxidation of the coal during and subsequent to its formation. Weathering and oxidation processes may proceed in-situ for coal deposits that outcrop near the earth's surface, or the oxidation of the coal particles may occur during mining, stockpiling or processing. Such oxidation, whether it affects the bulk-coal sample or on1y a thin outer layer on the coal surface, can dramatically influence the wettability of the particle and hence such processes as flotation, filtration, flocculation and dispersion.Many of the studies made on the oxidation of coals ·were designed to study its effect on flotation, coking or pyrolysis. The. present study 'is directed exclusively toward the effect of oxidation on the hydrophobicity and floatability of the coal. One of the first studies of the effect of oxidation on coal flotation was that of Sun [l] who found that as oxidation proceeds, coal becomes progressively more hydrophilic. Low-temperature oxidation (100-150°C for 250 h) generally lowered the coal floatability with an oily collector only slightly, but more extensive oxidation (200- 3500 C for 250 h) reduced coal floatability seriously. Sun also found that cationic amines were effective collectors for the oxidized coal which infers that oxidation makes the coal more negative in solution. He attributed the loss of floatability to be due to the accumulation of water-insoluble oxidation products at the coal surface. Gayle et al. [2] found that oxidation adversely affected coal flotation when an aliphatic-alcohol frother was used, though a small amount of oxidation appeared to improve the floatability of some coals using a kerosene-pine oil, collector-frother mixture in pilot-plant testing. Prolonged oxidation adversely affected the flotation recovery of the coals tested, the effect being more pronounced when an alcoholic-type frother only was used. They also noted that the reduction in floatability of lower rank bituminous coals was more affected by oxidation than was that of higher rank bituminous coals."

The valuation of early-stage exploration projects requires a valuer to take into account a large number of uncertain value drivers, the interplay among which may be non-linear. This paper examines some of the key value drivers including geology, target metrics, project area and maturity, the market and the psychology behind the decision-making process. The commonly accepted valuation methods and their underlying logic are outlined, including a view on why they evolved, what value drivers they attempt to address and their potential shortcomings. These methods include the multiple of exploration expenditure, geoscience rating, expected values and market based methods. Australian mines have traditionally relied on diesel powered vehicles to fulfil their light vehicle needs. There are many reasons for the resources industry to review its use of diesel-powered vehicles. The international industry has developed projects to explore the use of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) as a more sustainable alternative to traditional diesel-powered vehicles. While the technology for cost-effectively applying modern high-performance lithium-based batteries to the mining environment has existed for over a decade it is yet to be widespread throughout the industry. Through the collaboration of Safescape, 3ME Technology and Kirkland Lake Gold, with funding from Mining Equipment technology services (METS) Ignited, the project has focussed on advancing the Australian METS sector’s capability in the rapidly approaching implementation of BEV technology. This paper reports on the collaborative approach to develop a prototype vehicle; explains the selection criteria for the various components of the vehicle; and details the risk-based approach to developing a scalable product to replace existing underground light vehicle fleets. The prototype vehicle was tested underground at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville operations in Victoria beginning in October 2019. Reporting from these trials focusses on the key factors affecting underground operations. These include driveability, safety, charging and cycle times. Gathering data around energy consumption through normal daily duties enabled a model of energy consumption and charging requirements to be developed such that various applications of the electric vehicle can be considered against existing diesel-powered vehicles. This has provided insight into the impact on daily operations, and the way forward for large scale implementation.

It is well known that clays affect the flotation performance, and many of the refractory gold ores around the world contain clay minerals. Therefore, an ore sample from the Carlin Trend was selected for this study as these ores contain large quantities of clays. The presence of clay minerals in an ore makes it susceptible to a range of variables, such as the solution chemistry determined by pH and the chemistry of the rheology modifiers. The viscosity of the ore slurry was measured as a function of solid concentration and particle size distribution, in addition to using different rheology modifiers and pH regulators. The results were correlated with the ore flotation performance. It was found that various reagents known commonly as dispersants or rheology modifiers have different effects on the ore slurry viscosity. This study revealed that the gold flotation recovery can be improved by changing the pulp rheology.CITATION:Farrokhpay, S, Bradshaw, D and Dunne, R, 2013. In many cases, the use of hydrocyclone control is desirable for the stabilization of separation in the setting of changing feed conditions. Control concepts based on exact mathematical models are not satisfactory due to the complexity of the physical process. In this case, fuzzy control is a suitable solution. The data are primarily derived from an optical sensor that monitors the outside view of the free underflow stream. A throttling valve, serving as an actuator, is installed in the overflow pipe that regulates the volume split of the cyclone. Applications in closed circuit grinding and in separation plants for tunnel driving, fine sand dewatering, and classification of kaolin demonstrate the typical use of this development. Additionally, the technological characteristics of the cyclone may be improved by this control, which is mainly caused by the increased discharge capacity of the un-der flow nozzle. A further advantage is the option to operate at an optimal operation point. In many cases, this point is located at the transition spray/rope discharge. The improved operation characteristics present new options for extensive applications of fuzzy cyclone control.

In the 2000 page Handbook of Mineral Dressing by A. F. Taggart, the subject of material or metallurgical balances is covered in only six pages of eve-straining type. Although Taggart's work was compiled before 1945, and there has been significant progress since then in most areas of mineral processing, the practicing metallurgist's approach to metallurgical balances remains exactly the same as described in those six pages. There are several portions of Taggart's text appropriate to introduce the subject of this paper which I would like to quote: "Milling Calculations. Computations of per¬formance in milling are complicated by the fact that it is a continuous rather than a batch operation, that the quantities of solid materials handled are large and usually mixed with water, hence difficult or impos¬sible to weigh. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and field experiments to determine tne amount of permeability reduction in uranium sandstone after its exposure to different drilling fluids. Seven polymer and two bentonite fluids were laboratory-tested in their clean condition, and six polymer fluids were tested with simulated drill cuttings added. Sandstone cores cut from samples collected at an open pit uranium mine were the test medium. The clean fluid that resulted in the least permeability reduction was an hydroxyethyl cellulose polymer fluid. The greatest permeability reduction of the clean polymers came from a shale-inhibiting synthetic polymer. Six polymer fluids were tested with simu-lated drill cuttings added to represent field use. The least permeability reduction was obtained from a multipolymer blend fluid. A field experiment was performed to compare how two polymer fluids affect formation permeability when used for drilling in situ uranium leaching wells. For this test, the polymer fluid with the best laboratory results (multipolymer blend) was compared with a commonly used polymer fluid (guar gum) that gave poorer laboratory results. When fluid injection rates for the four wells drilled with the guar gum were compared with those for the four drilled with the multipolymer blend, no statistically significant difference was found.

"Indian coal industry is the world's third largest in terms of production and fourth largest in terms of proven coal resources. Indian coal deposits are generally of high ash content varying from 24 to 50%. The coking coal reserves of India constitute about 12% of the total coal inventory, and the coals are washed in washeries, before being used for metallurgical purposes. The processes used for washing coking coal is Jigs, Heavy medium bath and Cyclones for the sizes upto 0.5mm, while the coal fines are washed in spirals and conventional flotation cells. Extensive studies were carried out for understanding the performance of an operating conventional flotation plant. The performance studies revealed that appreciable quantity of clean coal is being lost in the tailings due to varied reasons and the required quantity and quality was not achieved. In this study, laboratory Flotation experiments were carried out to examine the cleaning characteristics of the said tailing and to determine the effective process parameters for recovery of clean coal at desired ash level ( 16-17%). Response Surface Methodology was applied to investigate the operating conditions of the Froth Flotation for modeling and optimization. Primary study reflects that there is a possibility to recover clean coal at 16-17% ash level with a yield of about 60-70% from that Flotation tailing of feed ash about 28%.INTRODUCTIONMost of the Indian coking coals are difficult in cleaning characteristics and high ash content due to its drift origin and its age of formation for more than 225 million years. Indian coking coal reserve is limited about 12% of total coal reserve. The minerals are homogeneously mixed with the coal macerals. The open cast mining practice and mechanized mining methods are being adopted to meet the increasing demands of coals resulting in generation of more coal fines and subsequently the quality is deteriorated. Indian good quality coking coal reserves of higher seams are fast depleting and hence coking coals of difficult cleaning characteristics of lower seams (LVC) are being now explored. Due to increased mechanization of coal mines to cope up the increased demand and followed by size reduction of lower seam coals in search of better liberation , the coal fines are increasing by leaps and bounds. The processes used for washing coking coal is Jigs, Heavy medium bath and Cyclones for the sizes upto 0.5mm, while the coal fines are washed in spirals and conventional flotation cells."

As part of a much larger research project, factor analysis was employed to help interpret and compare the geochemical signatures produced by two different sample media; a traditional -80# soil fraction, and a coarse float. Both sample types were collected by hand auger from the extension zone of the Redmoor sheeted-vein complex and analyzed -for 19 major and trace elements. The rationale behind the study infers that the geochemical anomalies produced by wallrock alteration around such targets can be better detected in the lithogeochemical rather than the soil environment, sometimes at considerable distance from their source.

Two key strategies for a new generation of mining are developing domestic raw material production and doing so in an environmentally responsible way, according to presenters at the 83rd annual meeting of the SME Minnesota Section in Duluth (the 71st annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium). From technical sessions detailing how to build com-munity support, to a short course on international perspectives in iron ore mining and processing, the two-day meeting emphasized the potential of Minnesota state deposits and the importance of maintaining productive community relations both locally and globally. The meeting of more than 300 mining industry professionals began on April 20 with a traditional convocation celebrating the values of northern Minnesota. The accompanying tradeshow, with a record 131 booths, showed the speed and vigor of the economic rebound. Keynote speaker Scott Anderson, vice president and senior economist at Wells Fargo, stated the prevailing mood of the conference: ?Wow, what a difference a year makes.? With metal prices and sales up and heading higher, he said, it was clear that the production-centered economic recovery is reaching the mining and the minerals industry. However, Anderson sounded a few notes of caution. Serious threats to economic stability remain, including the burgeoning national de?cit, high unemployment and the still out-of-control foreclosure crisis. Overall, he predicted a below-average recovery and stressed the importance of developing a long-term business strategy.

Studies relating to the fixation of sulfur by reaction of 4 to 8 mm diameter cylinders of calcined limestone or dolomite with high strength sulfur dioxide in the temperature range 880°C to 1020°C were undertaken. Dolomites are far superior in sulfate capacity and reactivity than dense limestones even at high strength SO2. The sulfation reaction was first order with respect to SO2 concentration below 100 percent. Zero reaction rate at 100 percent SO2 concentration indicates that sulfate was the exclusive reaction product and that sulfite had no role in the reaction. At relatively low SO2 concentrations gaseous diffusion through the reaction product layer has a marked effect on the rate. As SO2 concentrations were increased up to 100 percent more complex rate controlling mechanisms unfold. By sectioning partially reacted dolomitic limestone pellets a moving interface was observed. Reaction ceased because of pore plugging for dense non-porous limestones at 30% conversion. With dolomitic material virtually complete sulfation of the calcium was observed. S.E.M. analysis showed that the average atom ratio Ca:S was 1.01, thus supporting the argument that little if any of the magnesium was sulfated.

The pump is the heart of most industrial and mining plants, providing the energy to separate valuable minerals from process feed. The actual effect of the pump, both in terms of production costs and overall process efficiency, is often assumed or misunderstood by engineers due to insufficient pump performance data. Pump performance can be understood and corrected, where required, through continuous performance monitoring, leading to dramatic improvements in both pump life cycle costs and system efficiencies. The performance of every pumping application is subject to variation and the main contributing factors are as follows: ?Unavoidable deviations from pump supplier curves ?Pump wear ?Pump curve derating factors for slurry pumping ?System curve variation ?Deviation from basic principles of centrifugal pump operation. These are discussed in detail through case studies and the author?s personal experiences. This paper shows ways to minimize the effect of these variations, thereby reducing performance loss and preventing damage to the pump. The paper discusses the benefits of efficient pump operation, the requirements of pump performance monitoring, and its practical application to pump operation in the slurry and water environments. The cost of remedial actions is explored and compared against the savings in both power and plant reliability, resulting in a reduced life cycle cost of the pump.

As they allow producers to be up to the requirements while allowing expanding their product mix, new secondary metallurgical treatments have become a must additionally to standard equipment elements of steel plants modern. Most of these treatments occurs in the steel ladle increasing the pressure to ensure a reliable and as possible neutral reactor. Intelligent solutions for refractory lining ladles should integrate better adaptation to the operational process parameters and the high reliability/availability at the best cost/performance. This challenge has conducted Refratechnik to develop new concepts to overcome the frontier between shaped and unshaped materials and that’s what will be covered in this paper.
