This paper is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on exploration, development, mining methods and costs at various mines in the United States. It describes such methods at the Lincoln tungsten mine of the Wah Chang Mining Corp., Lincoln County, Nev. The purpose of these reports is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technologic information on mining methods, practices and costs. The Lincoln mine in Lincoln County, Nev., in the southeastern part of the [tate], was acquired by the Wah Chang Mining Corp., in April 1951. Mining methods and costs are of special interest at this property because of the low costs and good production record achieved through a well planned program of exploration, development, and exploitation. Operations were discontinued in July 1957 after the Federal Government suspended the tungsten purchase program.

The Bureau of Mines, following passage of the Solid Waste Disposal Act of 1965, was authorized to conduct research on methods for utilizing, stabilizing, or reclaiming mineral wastes. This report summarizes laboratory research conducted by the Bureau and cooperative field studies made with the mineral industry to reduce the environmental impacts of air and water pollution deriving from mineral wastes. Utilization research showed that both dry-press and steam-cured building bricks and ceramic tile could be made from copper mill tailings and other discarded mineral wastes. Sponge iron was produced from steel mill and amination industry wastes, and valuable mineral products were extracted from such diverse sources as flue dusts and uranium tailings. Mineral wastes were combined with agricultural and/or sewage wastes to make artificial soils that have the potential of resolving several disposal problems by production of a useful commodity. Physical, chemical, and vegetative stabilization methods were evaluated, singly and in combination, for reclamation potential on copper, uranium, lead-zinc, and asbestos tailings. Suitable methods were developed in the laboratory for overcoming major adverse conditions of these wastes such as salinity, heavy metal toxicity, acidity, basicity, lack of nutrients and organics, and unstable surfaces. Field testing of these methods was performed on a variety of mineral wastes. Costs for the various stabilization and utilization-procedures developed were also determined.

A JOINT meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held at Spokane, Wash., and Cranbrook and Kimberley, B. C., on Oct. 13 to 16, 1926, with a total attendance at one or another or all of the meetings of about 300 members, ladies and guests. At the opening meeting, on Oct. 13, in the Davenport Hotel, Spokane, about 175 were present. The morning was occupied with addresses of welcome by M. H. Sullivan for the Columbia Section, who called on Mayor Charles A. Fleming, President John F. Davies for the Chamber of Commerce, and E. R. Hannibal, president of the Associated Engineers, each of whom heartily welcomed the visitors. Philip N. Moore, former president, and special representative of President Samuel A. Taylor, replied for the A.I.M.E., and Lewis Stockett, president, and Charles A. Banks, chairman, British Columbia Division, Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and Henry M. Parks for the visiting A.I.M.E. sections, made appropriate responses on behalf of those they represented. The members and ladies had luncheon with the Associated Engineers. Philip N. Moore addressed the assembly on "The Opportunity of the Engineer"; an excerpt from his address appears on another page. At the afternoon meeting, with Lewis Stockett in the chair, Frank M. Smith was asked to make a brief statement of the proceedings of the Silver Producers Association in Denver. Supplementing his talk by placing a well-prepared statement on "Silver and the Plan of the Royal Commission on Indian Currency and Finance" in the hands of those present, he narrated what had been undertaken by the Silver Producers Association and what they hoped to accomplish.

Geological logging by mine and exploration geologists involves the application of a logging code that requires a geologist to make a subjective decision to classify a particular rock unit. This will most likely result in inconsistencies in logging that will be difficult to monitor or assess over time. A potential solution to this problem is to have an objective method to determine the true nature of a given rock unit. This can be achieved using portable X-ray fluorescence technology (pXRF), as large geochemical data sets can be collected rapidly and at low cost. Plutonic Gold Mine (Plutonic), Western Australia, has a growing data set of more than 150 000 pXRF multi-element analyses from core and underground face samples, reconciled to Au fire-assay concentration, and logging codes. This study investigates and statistically validates the consistency with which the logging codes have been applied at Plutonic for the last four years, with respect to both Au distribution and other elements. In doing so, we have developed a schema that allows objective logging to occur once core has been sent for assay and analysed by pXRF. This paper summarizes a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialed at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this, a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.

The Blueberry mine is about 10 miles west of Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan. The property consists of about 2000 acres in sees. 3, 4 and 5, T. 47, N.R. 28W. and secs. 32, 33 and 34, T. 48, N.R. 28W., and, excepting one intervening 80-acre tract, contains the iron formation for a length of about 21/4 miles. The property is traversed by State Highway M-28 and is served by three railways, the Chicago & Northwestern, the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic, and the Lake Superior & Ishpeming. The Northwestern transports the ore to a dock at Escanaba; the other railways, to Marquette. Ore for Chicago goes via Escanaba and that for Lower Lake ports, as Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo, via Marquette. History The presence of iron formation in this property has been known for many years, and mining operations on a small scale have been carried on intermittently. The Dexter mine, on the SE.1/4 of the NW.1/4 of sec. 3, was worked from 1883 to 1897 and 118,000 tons of ore was mined. From 1907 to 1915 extensive exploration was carried on over the whole of sec. 3, including 79 diamond-drill holes with a total footage of 26,000 ft. The Chase mine, on the NE.1/4 of the NE.1/4 of sec. 3, was developed from this exploration work, but after about 200,000 tons had been mined the property was abandoned. From 1908 to 1910 exploration was carried on by another company on sec. 4, 47-28, including four drill holes with a total footage of about 5000 ft. Much of the drilling on sec. 3 and of the exploration work on sec. 4 are within the present developed area of the Blueberry mine. A general campaign of diamond-drill exploration was undertaken in 1924, and within a year a considerable amount of ore was developed. The Ford Motor Co. then took an option on the property and carried on check drilling and diamond-drill work until the spring of 1926, when enough ore had been developed to warrant the sinking of a shaft

The Birmingham district, Alabama, is distinctive in the proximity to one another of its deposits of iron ore, coal and flux. These three basic requisites for the making of iron and steel are found within a radius of 10 miles. Both dolomite and limestone are produced, the former for blast-furnace flux and the latter for basic open-hearth operations. The Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co., a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation, operates a limestone mine at Muscoda, near Bessemer, 12 miles southwest of Birmingham, served by its own railroad transportation system. The mine has a capacity of 130 tons per hour. Average analyses of a recent month's production arc as follows: Fe²zO³ SiO² Al²O³ CaCO³ MgCO³ Lump, percent............................. 0.51 0.22 98.63 0.14 Crushed and washed, per cent,................ 0.70 0.26 98.36 0.18 Lump stone, 2 1/2 to 755 in., is used in open-hearth operations at Fairfield Steel Works. Fine crushed and washed stone, 1% to 0.063 in., is calcined at the lime-burning plant and used for lime charges at the Ensley open hearths. Geology The district's deposits of hematite ore occur in the Clinton formation, and the limestone beds mined are stratigraphically 330 ft. above the ore beds worked. A cross section on the center line of the mine is shown in Fig. 1. This limestone formation, 130 ft. thick, is in the Warsaw horizon of the Lower Mississippian. It lies above 100 ft. of Fort Payne chert, which is immediately above the Clinton formation, and is composcd of layers of chert and cherty limestone, approximately 50 per cent of the material being pure chert. The chert is extremely hard, and the cost of driving raises through it is very high. Both iron ore and limestone deposits lie on the southwest limb of the Jones Valley anticline, the formations dipping from 15' to 32' to the southeast. [There is a need for method of determining: benzene vapor in air which is simple and accurate and suitable for making industrial hygiene surveys. The most widely used method in this country is the modification of the Elliott and Dalton6/ procedure. This depends on the nitration of the benzene to reduction to phenylenediamine with all excesses of standard titanous chloride; solution, and titration with e standard ferric ammonium sulphite solution. This method has the disadvantages of being what time consulting: and cumbersome it requires considerable apparatus, and a special modification is necessary in the presence of toluene.]

The present knowledge on ground movements and mining damage is mainly based on observations made when mining seamlike deposits. The studies, rules, and regulations in different countries agree in that the differential ground movements, especially the strain, account for the damage to structures. Accordingly, large buildings are particularly susceptible. The opinions on what amount of ground deformation induces what degree of structural damage are not quite uniform. Mining damage can be reduced or prevented by structural and/or underground precautions. The latter comprise measures for generally reducing the ground movements (leaving pillars, filling, partial extraction) and for reducing temporary movements (rapid extraction, specially arranged workings). Because the differential movements decrease with increasing depth of mining, safety pillars are largely dispensable at greater depths. Shafts are mainly affected by the vertical derivatives of rock displacements, but extraction in the vicinity of shafts is feasible even under difficult conditions. The theoretical concept of the ground movement process established in part 1 of this work is in qualitative agreement with the facts herein observed. As a quantitative approach, it should be applied to calculating ground surface movements rather than rock movements about underground openings. It can be extended by introducing more detailed strata characteristics.

Fine feed fractions in the size range from 1 to 40 ¦m of materials with different hardness as limestone and silicon carbide have been stressed in two different devices. A tungsten-carbide-blodc allows a single stressing with a pressure up to 2000 MPa and a 4-piston-block enables a multiple stressing procedure in which the material bed is stressed in alternating directions with a pressure up to 700 MPa. The experiments show energy absorption as the major factor for the interparticle breakage of hard material, like quartz, zircon silicate, silicon carbide and smelted oonindum, pressure, however, does not influence the results within the investigated range from 100 to 700 MPa and even up to 2000 MPa for corundum. But the breakage of the middle-hard limestone depends on the pressure so far as more fineness can be produced if the same energy is introduced at a lower pressure level. The creation of very fine and microfine fragments decreases strongly with increasing hardness of the feed materiaL The energy consumption for producing microfine material with a multiple stressing procedure on a particle bed is much lower than that one of a usual milling process. But this procedure needs a classification with a seperation cut at a couple of microns, which is not easy to accomplish.

Spraying medium to achieve an energy-saving and emission reduction for iron ore sintering has been researched, such as spraying natural gas, coke oven gas, oxygen, sintering flue gas and gas from annular cooler. This paper focuses on effect of spraying steam on sintering surface on reduction of NOx and dioxin emissions in practical sintering production in Shougang Jingtang. It can be found that, with the increase of sintering bed spraying steam amount, NOx and dioxin of flue gas showed a decreasing trend. As spraying steam 1 t/h for 550 m2 sintering machine in Jingtang, NOx content decreases 2.6–9.5 mg/Nm3, and dioxin decreases 0.007–0.014 TEG ng/Nm3.

There is an increasing awareness on an international level of the potential for utilizing many wastes and by-products as construction materials. This has resulted in recent major reviews by OECD and RILEM to supplement national activities by agencies such as CANMET, USBM, BRE and LCPC. Much of this international and national work was reported during an International Conference on the use of by-products and wastes in civil engineering held in November 1978 in Paris. Based on participation in the OECD and RILEM reviews, and the Paris conference, developments in waste and byproduct utilization of particular concern to Canada are described. The major technical and economic constraints involved are also reviewed, so that the over-all evaluation reflects important factors such as inherent variability and transport logistics. Areas requiring further research and development are also identified. Particular emphasis is placed on slags, salvaged asphaltic concrete and surplus sulphur. "Due to the rapid development of China's industry, more than a hundred million tons of industrial wastes are generated annually, which occupy lots of land for storing, bring about environmental pollution, obstruct industrial and agricultural production and cause harm to people 's living. Therefore we must utilize them effectively to create wealth for our country. "

"Batch aqueous leaching and carbonation tests were conducted using industrial steelmaking slags to determine the effect of carbonic anhydrase enzyme as a catalyst. Calcium leaching is a strong function of particle surface area, and the extent can be expressed as a function of time and particle size. Carbonic anhydrase did not affect the calcium-leaching rate, however, it did catalyze calcium carbonate formation to achieve a neutralization time near the theoretical rate. Additionally, carbonic anhydrase modified the precipitate morphology due to accelerated particle nucleation. Time controlled tests in which the pH dropped to ~6 decreased the amount of carbonate produced, and this effect was exaggerated by carbonic anhydrase, while pH controlled tests (>8.5) exhibited the highest rate of carbonation. Because the leaching rate was ~50% faster than the carbonation rate, a further increase in the amount of carbonation may be realized by using carbonic anhydrase however pH must be >10.3.IntroductionSteelmaking slag contains high fractions of alkaline earth oxide based phases (i.e., CaO and MgO) that exothermically form carbonates. Thus, it is being considered as a means of permanent carbon dioxide sequestration. At current U.S. steel production rates, approximately 13-17 million tons/year of slag are generated from basic oxygen furnace (BOF), electric arc furnace (EAF), and ladle metallurgy furnace (LMF) processes [1]. BOF and EAF slag is used as high quality mineral aggregate or cement clinker, while LMF slag, produced at ~15% the rate of BOF and EAF slags, has limited use as blast furnace flux or acid mine neutralization with the majority going to landfill [2]. Based on slag’s chemical nature and immediate availability as a co-product from steel production, the steel industry initiated a project to investigate hydrous carbonate formation in steelmaking slag as a method of sequestering carbon dioxide emitted in steelmaking offgas [3]. The goal of this project is to determine the reactor parameters suitable for the design of an industrial system for treating steelmaking offgas with raw or minimally processed slag."

PREFACE THE successful conclusion of all geophysical work depends on the operator's skill and sound judgment, as well as on his knowledge of geology and geophysics. We have been fortunate enough to have as co-workers a number of very good men. Some results of their work are summarized in this paper, and it is a pleasure to acknowledge their cheerful spirit of co-operation and the enthusiasm and loyalty with which they have assisted in the building of a geophysical organization to serve the Canadian mining industry HISTORY Geophysical prospecting is commonly, but quite erroneously, regarded as something new. The name is modern, but the principle of applying physical laws to reveal the presence of hidden ore is several hundred years old. Already, at the beginning of our civilization, the need was strongly felt for methods that could indicate the presence of ore in regions where the ore-bodies were completely masked or hidden from the eye. Particularly in countries where the rocks have been eroded during periods of glaciation and later covered by a thick mantle of glacial debris, all kinds of mysterious schemes were invented to locate the hidden ore. Often magic was resorted to (for example, the divining rod), but methods based on sound principles were also developed. Such features as topography, colour and taste of surface waters, and the growth and occurrence of trees and plants, were used to reveal certain types of ore deposits. For finding bodies of iron ore, the compass was very early in use. The fact that objects of iron attract a compass needle was utilized in prospecting long bef01:e the time of Columbus, and a systematic search for bodies of iron ore by this method was organized as early as the year 1600. There are still in existence documents, dated a little over 300 years ago, which show that the Swedish Chancellor of that day, Axel Oxenstiorna, ordered dozens of sun-dial compasses from instrument makers in Germany. The Swedish Government at that time employed a great number of prospectors to search systematically for iron ore. This Government undertaking must have been quite successful, as a number of iron ore-bodies were found in areas covered by heavy overburden. These prospectors were simply Government 'geo-physicists', although they were not known by this fancy name.

The exchange of oxygen between carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide that occurs reversibly on carbon surfaces was studied at temperatures of 750° to 850°C and a pressure of 1 atmosphere. Carbon-14 was used to detect and measure the exchange reaction. The extent of oxygen exchange was a linear function of com- position of the gas mixture, and this relationship was used to evaluate the forward and backward rate constants of the reaction. Equilibrium constants, directly determined for oxygen exchange in this study, agreed well with values in the literature that were derived only by indirect procedures. This result establishes the validity of oxygen exchange in the mechanism of carbon gasification by CO2. Rates of carbon gasification were less than an order of magnitude slower than rates of oxygen exchange. Activation energies for these two processes were 58 and 53 kcal/mole, respectively. The closeness in the activation energies argues against any change in the rate-controlling step over a wide temperature span at atmospheric pressure. The role of CO as a retardant on the CO2-C reaction, and the nature of the carbon-oxygen complex are also discussed in view of the data obtained.

There is a need for a method of determining benzene vapor in air which is simple and accurate and suitable for making industrial hygiene surveys. This method has the disadvantages of being somewhat time-consuming and cumbersome; it requires considerable apparatus, and a special modification is necessary in the presence of toluene. Recently Cook and Ficklen have published a method based on the oxidation of benzene with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of iron salts. This method requires the use of solid carbon dioxide to freeze out the benzene. The reaction Which produces the color is complex; and only approximate quantitative estimations can be made, except in a very narrow range.

"The development of a DC resistivity instrumentation system for data acquisition in extreme topography yielded an unexpected bonus in the quality and information content of the type of raw data gathered. Not only were traditionally too-rough areas being investigated systematically for the first time, the unique high-density, multi-directional raw data were providing the opportunity to greatly expand the range of conductive and resistive signatures that could be accurately recognized. Using a true 3-D inversion algorithm, 3-D earth resistivity imagery began to show distinctive anomaly patterns for hydrothermal mineralization at the seldom-visited resistive end of the spectrum, successfully imaging epithermal gold systems in conditions that had defied conventional ground and airborne geophysics for years.The traditional mode of designing a resistivity survey to test a specific target concept was shown to be an unnecessary limitation on exploration thinking when a single sweep acquisition of dense, multi-directional 3-D raw data could effectively provide the all-targets “shotgun” coverage that would take 10 or 12 conventional surveys to duplicate. Exploration planning has the opportunity to move from single steps of trial and error geophysical testing to a mode of mapping everything at the outset, and then sorting out what might be of exploration interest in the results. Survey parameterization becomes the non-technical process of marking an outline on a map and declaring “survey here.” Operational and interpretational reasons for not testing where the exploration interest lies have all but disappeared. With any-terrain capabilities and unprecedented raw data density and overlap to support interpretation of complex conditions, that outline can be drawn through extreme rough terrain, including lakes, cliffs, industrial facilities, and grounded installations to test for generally unknown sub-surface features of potential interest.As more is learned about the larger-scale signatures of ore settings and the district-scale geo-electric imprint of hydrothermal processes on lithology, it appears that the only thing certain about ore signatures is their uncertainty. This is not bad news. New opportunities abound as the advanced 3-D technology allows a first effective look at the previously unexplorable rough terrain or complicated settings, and a second look at areas where older results may now be known to be non-definitive."
