"Electrochemical and spectroscopic evidence for the dissolution of a Au electrode by meso-2,3- dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) from an acidic LiCl04 electrolyte is presented. Near the potential of zero charge, DMSA was determined to form a stable layer on the metal surface but at more anodic polarizations, DMSA was displaced from the metal through an oxidative process. The anodic displacement of the layer from the electrode resulted in a small amount of Au that was detected in the electrolyte using atomic absorption analysis. The extent of Au dissolution, was monitored while holding the potential of the electrode for 24 hours at the thermodynamic Eo/H,O in LiCl04 electrolytes containing 10 mM DMSA. This routine resulted in detectable quantities of a soluble Au-DMSA complex in the electrolyte and the greatest leaching was observed at a pH = 2.0. At room temperature, the leaching rate was stable at 10.9 µg cm·2 hr·' however, upon increasing the temperature to 50.0°C, the rate of Au dissolution increased yielding an average rate of extraction of 40.1 µg cm·2 hr- 1. Interestingly, after the first 12 hours of leaching at 50.0°C, the leaching current decreased dramatically suggesting surface passivation which prevented further Au extraction. The implications of this process in the industrial leaching of Au will be discussed.IntroductionThe use of cyanide in the industrial process of leaching Au from ores has raised concerns regarding both operational safety and environmental issues surrounding the disposal of spent leaching eftluents in tailings ponds. Depending on the chemical nature of the processed ore, the spent solutions that are released into the tailings ponds can contain toxic cyanide, either dissolved or complexed with different metals and may pose serious risk to wildlife as well as freshwater contamination to nearby water systems. Because of these issues, some recent studies have focused on the exploration of more environmentally-friendly molecules to selectively leach Au with appropriate kinetics. However, to effectively leach Au into an aqueous solution, a suitable ligand that reacts to form a stable chemical bond with Au is needed to form soluble Au complexes that can be later recovered [I]. Recently several sulfur bearing alternatives have been shown to leach significant quantities of Au in aqueous solutions. These include thiourea [2], thiocyanate [3], and thiosulphate [4]. However, alkylthiols are also known to quickly form a stable covalent Au-S bond [5], but have been relatively understudied in term of their ability to leach Au in solution, even though some short chain thiols are water soluble and relatively nontoxic."

"The equilibrium between titanium ions and metal titanium was investigated in fluoride-chloride molten salt. The electrochemical properties of titanium ions in fluoride-chloride were studied on a molybdenum electrode by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). The equilibrium constant of the equilibrium between titanium ions and metal Ti was calculated in KCI-NaCl- 2.5wt %K2 Tif 6 at the temperature of 1073K.IntroductionTitanium, the ninth most abundant element in the earth's crust, is endowed with high strength, low density, excellent flexibility, strong spring back characteristics, high-temperature performance, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. These characteristics make titanium eminently suitable to be used in aerospace, marine industries, and harsh chemical environments. Although it has many excellent properties, the application of titanium in industry was limited by its high-cost. Therefore, many methods have been investigated for producing high-purity titanium at low cost. Electrolysis, involving the extraction and preparation of pure metal from ore using an electrolytic process, is considered a promising method for titanium metallurgy. Many studies have focused on the electrochemical behaviour and electrodeposition of titanium in molten chloride, fluoride, and chloride-fluoride electrolytes (1-IOJ. The electroreduction mechanism of Ti3+ ions in molten alkali chlorides has previously been studied by several workers. Two reduction steps, Ti3+ -Ti2+ -Ti, have been observed in various molten alkali chlorides [IJ. One reduction step, Ti3+ -Ti, has been observed in alkali fluoride molten salts l21. The behaviour of Ti4+ in fluoride or chloride-fluoride molten salts has also been investigated in the literature; it was proposed that the reduction of Ti4+ ions in the molten salts proceeded in a two step process: Ti4+-Ti3+-Ti l3l or a three step process: Ti4+ -Ti3+ -Ti2+-Ti ri. 4l Indeed, the stability of the titanium oxidation states depends on the bath composition l5l. The valence state was Ti2+ in alkali chloride melts, which was a lower oxidation state and correspondingly, in alkali fluoride melts, the higher oxidation states ofTi4+ and Til+ were more stable.The aim of the present work is to explore the effect of F/Cl atomic ratio on the equilibrium between titanium ions and metal titanium in fluoride-chloride at the temperature of 1073K. The electrochemical properties of titanium ions in fluoride-chloride were studied on a molybdenum electrode by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). The solubility product of the equilibrium between titanium ions and metal Ti was calculated."

Sodium pyroantimonate which is widely used as the clarifier in the glass industry and as the synergist in anti-flaming industry respectively has a production history of about 30 years in China. At present there is the production capacity of about 20,000 tons per year in China and China is chief producer of sodium pyroantimonate. In this work the production processes adopted by the producers of China, the operation conditions and the product qualities of sodium pyroantimonate prepared by different preparation methods have been summarized, and on the basis of comparing the advantages and disadvantages for each process the most advanced method - the air-oxidation method was introduced in detail. The production processes of sodium pyroantimonate mainly include the method of oxidation by sodium nitrate, the oxidation method of hydrogen peroxide, the potash salt method, the chlorination method and the air-oxidation method etc. The method of oxidation by sodium nitrate in which the crude antimony oxide, sodium carbonate and sodium nitrate are separately used as the raw material, the flux agent and the oxidant, has the advantage of short and simple technological process, but low grade quality of sodium pyroantimonate and bringing about serious environmental pollution are the disadvantages and this method has been substituted by other methods. Sodium pyroantimonate can be directly prepared by the hydrogen peroxide oxidation method with the advantages of simple technological process, high grade quality of the product and little environmental pollution. High grade quality of sodium pyroantimonate can be also synthesized by the potash salt method, in which industrial antimony white, the hydrogen peroxide, potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide are applied as the starting material. The disadvantages of these two preparation methods are high production cost and high requirements on the raw materials. The chlorination method with the crude antimony oxide, hydrochloric acid and chlorine as the raw material has the advantages of low production cost and high grade quality of the product. However complex process, high requirement of anti-corrosion for the equipments and producing plenty of waste water limit its application. The air-oxidation method with stibnite/jamesonite concentrate, sodium sulfide, and sodium hydroxide as the raw material and atmosphere as the oxidant is a newly developed method and its advantages are low production cost and the complex raw material can be treated by this method and its disadvantage is that the quality of sodium pyroantimonate is lower than that prepared by the oxidation method of hydrogen peroxide and the potash salt method.

A 2-D coupled thermo-mechanical model was developed to simulate hot tandem rolling of AA5056 aluminum alloy using the commercial finite element software package, ABAQUS The model was used to predict the temperature, strain rate and strain distribution in the strip at any position in the roll bite and was verified through comparisons with literature results in terms of both temperature and strain predictions at the roll bite exit. A sensitivity analysis indicated that model predictions of temperature and strain at the roll bite exit were sensitive to the friction coefficient and moderately sensitive to the heat transfer coefficient for the conditions studied. Microstructure equations taken from the literature were used to make predictions at various positions in the strip. The temperature, strain rate and strain vary dramatically through the thickness of the strip in the roll bite. The sensitivity of the microstructure predictions to these parameters was assessed and it was found that using average values of temperature and strain rate in the roll bite versus exit values significantly influenced the resulting microstructure predictions.

"IntroductionThe utilization of silver in the electronic industry has been increasing in recent years. It is desirable that valuable metals are recovered from the used scraps of these industrial goods. Condensor chips, for example, contain silver, palladium, and Ag-Pd alloy. The dissolution behavior of silver was studied assuming that scraps such as used condensor chips in which Ag-Pd paste is used are subjected to wet treatment.ExperimentalIn this study the powder, granules, and flakes of silver were used in these nitric acid leaching experiments. The nitric acid solution was agitated in a glass reactor with a magnetic stirrer and heated to the required temperature. The experiment was started by putting the silver sample in the solution. After the leaching, the solution was filtered and the concentration of silver in the filtrate was analyzed by ICP.ResultsIn dilute nitric acid of less than 5 N, silver powder dissolved easily with increase in the concentration of nitric acid and temperature. However, the more intensive the stirring of the solution was, the lower the dissolution quantity became. Fig. 1"

"An on-line technique to measure the efficiency of decoating I delacquering processes is being developed by Alcan' s Arvida R & D Centre. Decoating processes are used to remove moisture and coatings from shredded coated material such as Used Beverage Containers (UBC) before melting. Complete removal has been demonstrated to maximize metal recovery. Quantifying the weight of carbon and organic residue adhering to the shred surfaces is very difficult to measure directly, as the material can be highly folded. The technique developed indirectly measures the residue remaining by analysing the concentration of CO evolved in the decoater end zone exhaust gas.A commercial CEMS (Continuous Emission Monitoring System) incorporating an infrared type CO gas analyser was modified for on-line process exhaust gas analysis. Both pilot and plant trials had demonstrated that the CO concentration measured was inversely proportional to the efficiency of the organic removal achieved. As the quality of coated purchased scrap can be highly variable in moisture and organic content, continuous measurement should permit adjusting the feed rate and other decoater process parameters to the quality of decoating required."

In the early 1940's, the Caron ammonia ? ammonia carbonate leach process was used to produce nickel from Mayari ores at the Nicaro plant in Oriente Province, Cuba. While plant operation was generally successful, it was not broadly economical and was shut down. The plant was later restarted in the 1950's and a number of investigations initiated to resolve the more serious operational and performance issues. Processing steps studied included iron reduction (chemistry ? nickel and iron, reductant, equipment), ore variability (homogeneity and consistency of mineral concentrations, serpentine vs. laterite), leach solution strength, nickel recovery (temperature ? reduction and leaching, reoxidation) and a variety of other topics. These studies and their findings will be discussed. Caron himself obtained good results on these ores in the laboratory. They could not be duplicated in the field, the reasons for which will be reviewed. (Note: the ore looked like garden dirt; charcoal made from palm trees was one of the reductants attempted; and ammonia was the leach solution. Mixing the three, so to speak, was to yield nickel.)

Interfacial emulsion generated in copper solvent extraction is an inhomogeneous O/W emulsion that consists of organic phase, aqueous phase and solid particles. In order to determine what kind of components in organic phase promotes the emulsion, the organic phase separated from the interfacial crud provided by Dexing Copper Mine in Jiangxi, China was analyzed for its components by combined gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. It was found that many kinds of emphiphiles containing such hydrophilic groups as carbonyl, carboxyl, or acylamine existed in organic phase, most of which were originated from the reagent degradation. Conclusively, Lix984N would degrade gradually during a long-term contact with the acidic aqueous feed and strip reagents. Lix84 and nonylphenol, as effective components of Lix984N, degraded almost completely after long-term recycling. As a result, the effective components of Lix984N were far lower in concentration than the dense-aromatic impurities derived from the diluent and the degradation products in total. The degradation of Lix984N would deteriorate solvent extraction, disengagement performance and result in more serious interfacial emulsion.

"Cadmium telluride (CdTe) is a very interesting material that has many applications. Thin films of p-type CdTe can be used as the absorber layer in the heterojunction CdS/CdTe thin film solar cells in which n-type cadmium sulfide (CdS) works as the window layer. A review of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra ofp-type CdTe thin films prepared by different techniques was performed. The presence of defects and impurities such as oxygen and chlorine influence the PL spectrum. Copper and other dopants change the PL spectra and enhance the defects band. Chemical-heat treatment especially with CdCh is known to improve the quality of CdTe thin films because it decreases the Cd vacancies and quenches deep traps, so it enhances the PL signal. A discussion of chemical-heat treatment especially with CdCh, the effect of the ambient atmosphere, and that of the measuring temperature is performed.IntroductionCadmium telluride (CdTe) is a II-VI compound semiconductor that has a cubic zincblende (sphalerite) structure with a lattice constant of 0 A4~11]. Other than all of II -VI semiconductors, CdTe can be made both n- and p-type. But due to self compensation it is not easy to get p-type CdTe films [2]. Polycrystalline CdTe thin films are interesting because they have a lot of applications. Most of the problems associated with the use of these films are attributed to inhomogeneity, self-compensation, and the difficulty of forming a stable and lowresistivity ohmic contact [3]. CdTe technology has been established for a large number of applications, including solar cells, optical and nuclear detectors, and thermal- and radiationimaging devices [3]. At present, the highest demonstrated conversion efficiency for a CdTe based heterojunction (ID), with CdS as a window layer, is 16.5% [4, 5]. CdTe thin films can be prepared by different experimental techniques, such as thermal evaporation [l], electrochemical deposition (ED) [3], close-spaced sublimation (CSS) [3, 4, 6], physical vapor deposition (PVD) [3], chemical molecular beam deposition (CMBD) [7], and close space vapor transport (CSVT) [8].The objective of this paper is to make a review of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra ofp-type CdTe thin films prepared by different techniques and discuss the factors that influence the PL spectra. The composition of the film is very interesting in determining its PL spectrum. Different kinds of defects, impurities and dopants have their finger prints in the PL spectrum. Deposition techniques and deposition parameters such as the deposition temperature and ambient atmosphere also have their influence. Heat and chemical treatments which are known to improve crystallization and reduce the defects change the PL spectrum."

"Rapid technological innovation has propelled the use of electronic equipment leading to the generation of more and more waste electrical and electronic equipments (WEEE). Printed wiring board (PWB) is a component made of one or more layers of insulating material with electrical conductors. To investigate an environmentally friendly process to recycle PWBs, PWB samples with and without additives were pyrolyzed. Liquid, gas and solid products were achieved with different conversion fraction. Analysis of the exhaust gases from the experiments using GC-MS and MS showed that without CaCO3 additives poisonous gases such as C6H6 and HBr were produced which were adequately controlled if CaCO3 was added.IntroductionPyrolysis is one of the best methods for treating complex mixtures of waste polymers and to recover the material and energy content. The process consists of thermal decomposition at moderate temperatures in total absence or small amount of oxygen in which the structures of polymers break down into smaller intermediate products "". The decomposition temperature of a substance is the temperature at which the substance breaks up into smaller substances or into its constituent atoms 2). Thermal treatment of PWBs were reported using DC Arc Plasma furnace 3), and fixed bed reactor 4). One drawback in dealing with thermal treatment of PWB scraps is the likely production of super-toxic halogenated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans from the bromine containing structures. Pyrolysis of organic materials contained in waste PWBs leads to the formation of gases, oils, and chars which can be used as chemical feedstock or fuels ""'. Dehalogenation of the pyrolysis product of electronic scraps is essential to make it commercially acceptable. It would be obviously the most advantageous solution as pyrolysis and dehalogenation are carried out simultaneously. Reported pyrolysis investigations are at experimental stage and have been carried out in vacuum, molten salt, fluidized bed, rotary kiln, entrained, stationary, and moving bed reactors 7). Comparing to the incineration and combustion of PWBs, the pyrolysis process has several characteristics: 8'"">) 1). Converting the organic solid substance into fuel gas, fuel oil and carbon-black as storage energy; 2) Emitting toxic substances such as sulfur, bromine and heavy metals in wastes; and 3) Keeping metals from being oxidized. Although many researches into the pyrolysis of PWB wastes have been reported, most of the works have been carried out using analytical pyrolysis techniques or very small batch reactors ""~'5). Also, most of the works for the pyrolysis of PWBs haves concentrated on the composition of the organic products, particularly the brominated organics. The current study is to investigate the pyrolysis of PWB powders in a small TG-DTA scale and a 50-gram tube furnace scale."

Polycrystalline Ti-rich NiTi thin films have been deposited from a single NiTi target using a DC magnetron sputtering system. Free standing film was obtained by using a single crystal silicon substrate. Thickness ofthe thin films is controlled at around 12 pm. In this investigation, the effect of deposition temperature on the microstructure and transformation temperatures of the thin films is studied. Influence of post heat treatment temperatures on the properties of the thin films is also investigated. Transformation temperatures of the thin films are determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The surface microstructure of the thin films is studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the crystallinity is determined using x-ray diffractometry. It is found that the thin film deposited on a hot substrate is crystalline even when the substrate temperature is as low as 300°C, while the normal crystallization temperature for an amorphous thin film is around 500°C. The microstructure of the film deposited on a hot substrate shows a very fine grain size. The grain size increases with increasing substrate temperature during deposition. The effect of post deposition heat treatment on grain size is minimal.

This paper describes the characteristics and regularities of a process to recover rare earth minerals from Baotou Ore with H-205 collector. H-205 is a kind of hydroxamic acid with amide as a polar group and poly-cycle aromatic hydrocarbon as a non-polar group, having strong ability to capture RE minerals (bastnasite, monazite). When adding a certain dosage of water glass and some other modifying agents, and maintaining pH value between 8.5 and 9.5, RE minerals can be effectively separated from calcium and barium minerals, such as fluorite and barite, etc. Under normal flotation temperature and concentration, when using H-205 to float RE minerals, it needs a bit longer conditioning time (a few minutes longer than that for the conventional collectors). It is also shown that the reagent has the property of resistance to hard water. The laboratory scale and pilot scale tests of the process have been carried out on bulk froth containing RE minerals and fluorite taken from Ore Dressing Plant of Baotou Iron and Steel Company, in both cases, high grade RE concentrates were obtained and the recovery increased remarkably. Therefore, the process has a great practical value.

The Sepon Copper Project is located in Laos and has a mineable reserve of approximately 16Mt of ore grading 5% copper with minor gold and silver values. The deposit is a clay-hosted secondary copper mineral suite, predominantly chalcocitic in nature with associated pyrite. The current project design is based on the production of 60,000t/a of LME Grade A cathode by an acid leaching process followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning. Significant metallurgical testwork was conducted as part of the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) with process challenges identified and overcome at each phase of testing. Flowsheet configuration is geared to autogenously generating sufficient acid and ferric iron to meet gangue acid consumption and to leach the copper. The ability to maintain acid and ferric levels in the process liquors is strongly influenced by the proportion of pyrite in the ore presented to the autoclave. This paper will outline flowsheet development from preliminary variability testing to pilot plant and DFS design. The Sepon process solution seeks a balance between operability and capital/operating costs, and provides insights into the basic mechanisms influencing flowsheet selection for these ore types.

A laboratory process based on simple and environmental friendly operation, aimed at recycling of spent Li/MnO2 batteries, is described in this study. This process involves roasting Li/MnO2 batteries in a vacuum furnace at 650°C, followed by selective leaching Li2CO3 from calcined electrode material in distilled water at ambient temperature and controlled crystallization of pure Li2CO3.

Recycling technology of spent Mn-Zn system batteries has been worked out and tested in laboratory scale. The proposed technological scheme includes the following basic operations: breakage of batteries, hydro-vibrated treatment of broken up mass, electrolysis by using alkali electrolyte. This method enables extracting of 200-220 kg zinc in powder form, of 300-350 kg manganese concentrate and of 130 kg steel in the form of scrap per tone of broken up batteries.
