INTRODUCTION This paper deals with the main components in exploring for and developing a gold ore deposit. It addresses geology, exploration drilling, ore reserves, and evaluation criteria in an integrated manner to present an overall picture. Gold forms such a small component of a gold ore body, that particular care should be taken in dealing with the data from a developing deposit. The paper lists the main gold ore deposit types and their character. Their differences, as well as differences to other types of ore deposits, are important to understanding exploration approaches, and problems of ore reserve definition. Gold exploration has enjoyed a great boom in recent years. Many new ore deposits have been developed but experience shows that definition of gold is not a simple straight forward process and this outline attempts to point out some of the important aspects of ore reserve definition including some pitfalls. GOLD DEPOSIT TYPES The Witwatersrand deposits in South Africa produce about 50% of the world's gold. The gold occurs as fine grains in thin beds within gently dipping quartz pebble fan conglomerates usually with associated pyrite grains. It is characterized by rather uniform distribution of gold along thin layers within the conglomerate.

El Teniente Mine of Codelco-Chile, located at Los Andes Range of Mountains, 90 kilometers South far from Santiago, the capital city, has been exploited for more than 90 years, with over 1000 million tonnes of copper ore extraction. No doubt, this particular record, has been possible to achieve due to an efficient combination of human and technological efforts in the exploitation of one of the biggest ore deposits of the world. Throughout times, the exploitation has evolved from a mainly manual one to a highly mechanized exploitation. Notwithstanding, different and several geomechanical problems that occurred in one of its areas, increased the risks to personnel that should normally operate large equipments in its working face. This last condition, forced El Teniente mine to design and develop systems and technologies that would allow the use of tele-operated LHD, picking hammers and drilling equipment (jumbos) from a safe zone. Currently, El Teniente Mine is using in its extractive works equipment such as LHD, picking hammers, and drilling Jumbos, that can be manually or teleoperated commanded from a Central Control Room located one kilometer away from the production area. In general, a new technological era has been opened in the mining exploitation at El Teniente: the exploitation era with telecommanded robots.

INTRODUCTION The Chimney Creek Gold Mine (Gold Fields Operating Co. - Chimney Creek) is located 47 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada, at the northern end of the Osgood Mountains. The operation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Fields Mining Corporation, the North American branch of Consolidated Gold Fields PLC, London, England. The plant started up in November, 1987, less than three years after discovery of the orebody and three months ahead of schedule. Ore is mined in an open pit and is processed by combined dump leaching and milling techniques for gold and silver recovery. The mine is set to produce approximately 150.000 ounces of gold and 50,000 ounces of silver per year over a 12 year life at current reserve estimations. The mine was designed and constructed at a cost of $79.3 million with engineering and construction services provided by Davy McKee Corporation, San Ramon, California. Key Gold Fields operating staff were involved in the design of the facility from the start of the project: The Mine Manager, Plant Superintendent, Plant General Foreman, Maintenance General Foreman and Chief Metallurgist were all involved full time on the project within 5 months of the first ore discovery. Emphasis was directed at optimizing operating efficiency and in particular minimizing labor costs in the plant. It was recognized that a high level of instrumentation and control would be required to achieve this. The risk associated with the instrumentation and control systems implemented was to be minimized by using equipment and systems that had been proven in industry while utilizing the most cost effective, state-of-the-art technology available. The reliability of the overall control system was considered to be critical in view of the cost of downtime associated with the gold extraction plant. BRIEF PROCESS DESCRIPTION The dump leaching process treats approximately 1.2 million tons per year of low grade ore at an average grade of 0.035 oz/ton. Run of mine material is dumped on a lined leach pad and weak cyanide solution is applied by drip irrigation. Pregnant solution run off is pumped to carbon columns in the milling plant for gold recovery and the barren solution returned to the dump leach circuit. Average gold recovery is 60%. This process has little instrumentation and control associated with it. The milling operation treats 700,000 tons annually of higher grade ore (0.200 oz/ton initially, dropping to an average of 0.135 oz/ton after first two years). Recovery is directly related to head grade (fixed tail assay effect) and currently averages 96%. A single pass through a jaw crusher reduces run of mine ore to minus 12 inches. The ore is stockpiled and reclaimed by loader for grinding in a two-stage milling circuit consisting of a SAG mill and ball mill, the latter in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. Cyanide and lime are added into the SAG mill to start dissolution of gold as early as possible in the circuit. The ground product leaves the milling circuit at approximately 78% minus 200 mesh and is fed to an unique "double thickener" leaching-recovery circuit. This circuit has been discussed in detail in a paper by J. G. Mansanti et a1 (1). Two thickeners are arranged in counter- current configuration with three leach tanks. Overflow solution from the first thickener is treated by carbon-in-columns (CIC) for gold recovery with 85% of the soluble gold recovered onto this carbon. Underflow slurry from this thickener is pumped to the leach tanks, with a total retention time of 12 hours, and then gravitates to the No. 2 thickener. Overflow solution from the second thickener is used as a wash in the first thickener. Underflow slurry from the second thickener is treated in a carbon-in- pulp (CIP) scavenging circuit to recover the remaining 15% dissolved gold. Gold-loaded carbon from both the dump leach and milling circuits is stripped in batches using the Zadra hot caustic- cyanide elution process. Gold (and silver) is recovered from the hot strip solution by precipitation with zinc dust and the product recovered on Funda pressure filters. The precipitate is retorted to remove any mercury and then smelted into buttons. The buttons (approximately 80% gold, 15% silver) are shipped to an independent refiner in Salt Lake City, Utah, for further treatment.

During .the past five decades or so we have passed from a time when it was difficult to point to a mine or an ore body and verify that it had been discovered by geological methods, through the. Twenties when the common saying was, "Who ever heard of a mine found by a geologist?", to recent decades when hundreds of mines and ore bodies are acknowledged geological discoveries and the above query can be ignored. Recently, however, the application of mining geology appears to have been downgraded, or so it seems to me. Basic geology in mining has been cheapened and glossed over in favor of geophysics and outcrop sampling, even though the latter is merely one technique of mining geology and, to some extent anyhow, has been used for a. long time. (Locke, 3, pp 81-87). Geophysics by itself and in conjunction with geology has had success in certain geological provinces, but limited attainment in mountainous terrane except in those few cases where strongly magnetic minerals are associated with ore. Nevertheless, in the Cordillera .many experimental techniques are offered as proved ones. This is not an intent to try to depreciate honest geo- physics. Continued experimentation and use of it is approved by all, but at the same time it is foolhardy to throw mining geology overboard, Generally both approaches should be considered and usually, at first anyhow, geology is the most direct one.

Mining induced seismicity and rockbursts have been part of the deep level gold mining industry in South Africa for many years. One could be forgiven for thinking that we should know everything there is to know by now to have rockbursting under control to a level that it has minimal impact on safety and production. Well, we don’t… There are things we know that we know, and they are implemented, or should be. There are thigs we know that we don’t know, and they are researched, or should be. There are things we don’t know that we don’t know, and, well, we don’t know… We know that seismicity and the associated potential for rockbursts generally increase with an increase in stress (increase in mining depth and/or mining span and creation of remnants) and proximity to faults and dykes. We know there are a number of potential sources of events in a mine; that is: mining abutments, pillar abutments, mining faces and geological structures (faults and dykes). We know there are a number of event mechanisms associated with these sources; that is: slip on a geological structure, shear through intact rock and bursting of the rock near the edge of a mining excavation. One of the tools used more and more and with increased success to identify event source mechanisms is Moment-Tensor analysis (MT). This typically assist in differentiating between three event mechanism components: volumetric deformation component, axial deformation component and slip / shear component. The insight gained from MT assist greatly in identifying the most likely event source to assist in understanding the rockmass response to mining. We know that the seismic response in our mines are mining induced (not natural). This may seem trivial, but it is important to realise that we influence the seismic response with the way we mine, and by how much we mine (extraction ratio). Therefore we put design rules and strategies in place to reduce the seismic hazard and we install rockburst support in our mining excavations. We know the seismic response to mining is influenced by the properties of the rockmass, including strength, stiffness and brittleness, but quantifying its influence is typically more difficult than expected. We know numerical modelling can improve the engineer’s understanding of the potential rockmass response associated with designed mining layouts and strategies. For our environment (narrow, tabular large area) elastic boundary element modelling remains the most convenient and practical approach, but it overestimates the stress at mining abutments and underestimates the stress further away from these abutments. Adding a crushing (based in limit equilibrium) modelling approach vastly improves the boundary element modelling ability to simulate the deformed (interpret fractured) zones and associated redistribution of stress. We don’t know how to quantify what an acceptable seismic risk is. We don’t know if we can mine remnants at an acceptable seismic risk. Some remnants are extracted surprisingly easy, others serve us with devastating rockbursts. The limit equilibrium modelling shows potential to significantly improve our ability to quantify the rockburst risk. We don’t know if large-scale preconditioning is possible and will be effective to significantly reduce the seismic risk associated with remnant and pillar mining. Research is required (and has been initiated). Vast areas of ground have been extracted historically in the South African gold fields. Most gold reserves are now in deeper ground (4000 m) and historic remnants (areas left before due to mining difficulties) as well as pillars (regional stability pillars). If we cannot find ways to extract these reserves at acceptable risk levels, the future of the South African gold mining industry is very short.

Historically, this area produced gold and silver from many well-known vein deposits, like Tayoltita, Topia, and San Jose de Gracia. Modern exploration identified three categories of deposits: 1) low grade porphyry golds in shallow level dacite porphyries; 2) batholith-related deposits; and 3) those formed in volcanic sequences of Late Cretaceous to Late Tertiary. At least four porphyry golds have been identified, of which Metates is best known. These are formed by and within dacite porphyries, associated hydrothermal breccias and sometimes within surrounding metasediments. Their ages are from mid-Cretaceous to Early Tertiary. Precious metal deposits associated with batholiths occur as veins, contact haloes in metasediments or volcanics, skarns, tectonic breccias, hydrothermal tourmaline breccias, dacite dikes or as disseminated or stockwork deposits such as La Fortuna. Several new gold discoveries were made in older Early Tertiary Volcanic Sequences and in the younger Tertiary volcanics within prominent structures exceeding 3 to 5 km in lengths. Some of these are open-pittable but most have to be mined by underground methods.

Introduction Laboratory studies were carried out at West Virginia University to investigate the rock-fragmentation mechanism of continuous miners using an automated rotary cutting simulator. The primary factors influencing the fragmentation process were found to be bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut and cutting-drum rotational speed. This paper presents a discussion of the effects of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation. The removal of rock ridges/walls between adjacent grooves is analyzed with three hits mounted simultaneously on the cutting head, while the bit tip angle was varied from 600 to 900. Bit spacing was varied from 25.4 to 50.8 mm (1 to 2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Respirable dusts generated during the course of the experiments were analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism of continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation. A review of the literature revealed that a considerable amount of research has been carried out on rockcutting processes. Many authors agree that the mechanical cutting efficiencies of mining machines (e.g., continuous miners, shearers and road headers) are affected by a host of parameters. Some of these parameters are machine controlled, some are operator controlled, while others are uncontrollable. Efforts were focused on understanding the influence of parameters such as bit spacing, cutting depth, attack angle, bit type, drum speed, bit geometry (i.e., tip size, shape and tip angle) and rock type on the cutting process efficiency in terms of specific energy consumption and respirable dust generation (Strehig?? et al., 1975, Hanson et al., 1979, Khair et al., 1989). Roepke et al. (1976) in an attempt to study the dust and energy generated during coal cutting using point attack bits found that the dust and the specific energy consumed both decrease as the depth of cut increases. The four fundamental stages of dust generation luring rock fragmentation are identified by Zipf and Bieniawski (1989). Coal breakage by various types of wedges was assessed by Evans and Pomeroy (1966) in an extensive experimental study on British coals. Yet the industry today requires further attention and guidance to optimize the energy consumption and dust generation during the rockbreakage process. This paper attempts to give a better understanding of the influence of some of the parameters listed above and focuses on further improvement in the rock-cutting process. The specific energy consumed for different types of bits used and the respirable dust generated are analyzed in the context of the variation of a few other parameters. Laboratory investigation The experiments were performed in the Rock Mechanics Laboratories located at West Virginia University. A rock-cutting simulator designed and fabricated by Khair (1984) was utilized for this purpose. The details of this machine are available in the literature (see Khair 1984). For this study, a series of preliminary experiments was carried out to determine the optimum cutting frame advance speed. This was intended to facilitate a maximum cut depth of 31.75 mm (1.25 in.) at an advance rate of 0.525 mm/s (0.0207 ips) for all types of bits being used and various bit spacings being considered. To look into the cutting-process efficiency of a continuous miner in the laboratory, several parameters of influence are being considered. Besides the bit-geometry parameters, machine- and operator-controlled parameters, such as spacing of bits on the cutting head, the cutting head rotational speed and the total cutting depth during an experiment, are varied. At the time this paper was written, only part of the completed experiments were ana¬lyzed, and a number of experiments were still being carried out following an orthogonal fractional factorial experimental plan to assess the effect of all of the above¬mentioned parameters on the cutting efficiency in terms of energy consumption and dust generation. Autocad has become the standard graphics package for the mining industry as well as the general engineering profession. This paper discusses the evolution that mine planning has undergone and the trend toward compatibility with Autocad. It discusses the common use of Autocad in mine planning and systems modeling using a program called ICAMPS developed by Ohio Automation. As an example of its usefulness the use of the interactive ventilation network modeling capabilities are discussed specifically and are applied to mine planning at an operating trona mine. The ventilation analysis feature of the ICAMPS software works from Autocad drawing of the as-mined map and the projected mine layout. Using on-screen displays of these maps and the snap-on feature of Autocad, the planner designates nodes in the ventilation network, connects them into branches and selects branch characteristics from a side bar menu. The color coded ventilation network appears with the branch parameters alongside each branch. The software calculates the length of airways, computes the branch resistances where needed, converts the input into the required format and passes this information as input data along to the PENNVEN simulation program written by the Pennsylvania state University. Output is available in graphical as well as report format. The color coded graphs include pressures at the nodes and flow quantities on the branches. Since the networks come from the mine maps, the ventilation schematic displays are to scale and can be plotted separately or superimposed on the mine maps.

"The decline of the “super cycle” has placed an end to a decade of production-focused strategies, with operating cost growing at rates higher than production. Today, the sector is placed on a tough ride and forced to shift focus to cash preservation and efficient cost management. However, most cost management systems in the minerals industry are not conceived as value driving tools but to meet financial accounting and reporting needs. This research draws from a the development of an innovative cost management methodology that applies Activity-Based Bottom-Up cost budgeting and continuous improvement tools to develop a value-driven cost management system for sustainable improvement of operational efficiency and cost reduction. The methodology was successfully tested in the Andina underground mine III Panel sector of Corporation del Cobre (CODELCO), in Chile. INTRODUCTION Cost management is fundamental to profitability of any industrial project. Even more essential in mining, an industry that deals with commodities, which prices are dictated by the market and are beyond the management capacity of the company. The end of the mining “super cycle” and the advent in 2008 of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), placed an end to a decade of production focused strategies, with operating cost growing at rates higher than production. The sector was placed on a tough ride and forced to shift focus to cash preservation and efficient cost management. Many mining companies have seen themselves into the urgent need of cost management systems capable of achieving sustainable productivity gains and consistent profitability. Cost management is composed of three main processes: estimation, budgeting and control [1]. A number of conventional techniques have been used for cost estimation and budgeting for many years. However, most cost control systems in the minerals industry cannot be referred to as “cost management” since they are conceived to fulfil accounting and reporting needs, rather than to improve operational efficiency [2]. In general, conventional cost budgeting and control systems in mining use a “top-down” methodology, which lacks of necessary details, and fail as a management tool leading to undesirable results [3]."

The Appalachian coal region is an area here the small mining operation dominates. The large number of small operations makes the coal industry in chat area very competitive, the industry concentration ratio being low. This feature is reflected in the nature and behavior of the coal supply and demand viz a viz the coal market. The vast majority of the small coal operations in Eastern Kentucky for example, are contractors. The circumstances under which a large mining company can elect to use contractors to supplement their coal production are examined. The pros and cons of small underground single unit mines and larger multiple unit mines are discussed.

Exploration The technology of underground construction and particularly of tunneling, both now and in the future, starts with knowledge of the properties of the medium surrounding the tunnel. Although we are trying to develop machines that can excavate tunnels independently of the properties of the medium, and although we may achieve some success in this direction, we seem always to be brought up short by a paradox: With increasing sophistication of machines and with increasing complexity of construction jobs, our methods are likely to become more sensitive rather than less sensitive to changes in the medium. I suspect that the need for more precise knowledge of subsurface conditions in advance of construction will increase rather than decrease as time goes by. In the recent anniversary issue of Engineering News Record, Probing the Future, Senior Editor Bill Jacobus prophesies highly sophisticated devices to probe the unknowns of the earth's soil and rock materials. He envisions that "drill holes to obtain borings will give way to rock-melting coring devices". He may be right; it is hard to argue the accuracy of predictions of the future. The Penjom Gold Mine is one of the world's worst preg-robbing gold ores, yielding very low recoveries from traditional CIL methods. Gold recovery from the cyclone underflow was targeted to recover as much gold as possible in the absence of the fine preg-robbing carbon. Gold is recovered by intensive cyanidation and tabling of a gold concentrate produced by gravity from the cyclone underflow. The circuit was designed together with Gekko Systems and uses their InLine Pressure Jig and InLine Leach Reactor technology to reject the preg-robbing carbonaceous material and obtain high recoveries from the gravity concentrate before over grinding the carbon and sulphides. The gravity and intensive cyanidation circuit now recovers almost 50% of gold in new mill feed, with unit recovery in intensive cyanidation of up to 90%, the highest unit recovery in the plant. Operating costs for the gravity and intensive cyanidation circuit are under US$2.50 per oz, while the cost to recover gold from the cyclone overflow is -US$200 per oz. (not including common costs of milling, stripping and electrowinning). Figure 1 shows the increase in gold recovery due to the gravity and ILR circuit coming on line at Penjom.

Until recently, the general expectation among mining compa­nies and financial analysts has been that the price of gold would remain on a generally upward slope. The recent drop in the price of gold has caused many people to re-think the issue. Of course, the price of gold is singularly difficult to predict, so it is difficult to tell which concept is correct. In the present financial situation, however, many junior gold companies are faced with the reality that money is hard to raise, and many senior gold companies find that they are facing a period of corporate losses even though they own solidly producing mines, As engineering consultants, Kappes, Cassiday has recently received several requests to review conventional milling projects to see if heap leaching is a more viable option. In regard to straight financial criteria such as return on investment and net present value, the question is usually fairly easy to answer. However, corporate decisions must often be based on less definable criteria. For instance, new stock issues tend to be more successful if they are larger, which tends to favor milling operations over heap leaches. The corporate issues are often subjective and difficult to generalize about, so I will con­centrate in this paper on a few financial concepts.

This paper presents the experimental results of an ongoing investigation into various properties related to the performance and durability of concretes made using existing and new cement replacements. The process of cement and concrete production is investigated focusing on product performance and environmental performance. The overriding factor for the progression of a material will be product performance however; each material selected will have many intrinsic environmental benefits. The study combines Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) with each cement replacement candidate using the most common replacement percentages, 10, 20, 25, 30 and 50 percent. A 35N/mm2 concrete is then prepared and analysed in the fresh and hardened state. In addition, a chemical and physical analysis of each replacement material has been performed and results compared to the control samples containing OPC only and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) as a replacement. The results show that in their present form the replacements used in this research do not compare with the strengths achieved by the controls. The right balance of chemical composition and particle grading needs to be achieved to produce a realistic replacement material. The processes required to achieve this must strike a balance between monetary and environmental cost.

The vibration energy that travels beyond the zone of rock breakage is wasted - all it does is cause damage and annoyance. Under favorable geologic conditions, this energy may travel many kilometers before it finally drops bellow the background noise level. This has forced the introduction of more restrictive limits to the allowable vibration levels. To maintain the profitability of a mine or quarry and to comply with environmental protection legislation, blasting needs to be performed in a more predictable way that will ensure that the final results are optimal in both mining and environmental terms. Minimization of ground and induced structural vibration is, therefore, a matter of good blasting practice - not just an attempt to avoid complaints from neighbors. A new approach to blast vibration minimization is presented. The method utilizes the existence of the local minimums in the frequency spectrum of single-hole blast vibration. The results are presented as a delay map showing maximum ground or structural vibration velocity for many combinations of interhole and interrow delays. A blast engineer can use this map to select an optimal combination of delays that will produce a low vibration velocity at a selected location and, at the same time, will be acceptable from the point of view fragmentation or muck pile shape.

California's annual production of >11 million tons of cement, at a value of over $640 million, comes from eight companies, which operate 11 plants. Cement is California's second most important mineral commodity, representing 25% of its total annual mineral production. Although most of the cement produced is consumed within the state, current export locales include the Pacific Northwest, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. An enumeration of the components required to produce cement is deceptively simple: calcium oxide (65%), silica (20%), alumina (4-5%), iron (3-4%), and calcium sulfate (4%) as a retardant admixture. The last, and most expensive, ingredient in cement manufacture is energy. Detrimental materials in cement mixes include excess .magnesium, alkalis, heavy metals, sulfur, and other volatiles. Each of the 11 cement plants in California requires a unique chemical solution of combined raw materials to produce a uniform product: portland cement. The geologist proposing solutions for the additive raw materials in cement manufacture must have a thorough knowledge of a particular cement plant's needs. In the California cement market, keeping the costs of additive raw materials down is one way to also stay competitive, and using a combination of natural and waste materials as additive raw materials allows cement producers to stay competitive.

The most serious problem for on-line coarse particle size measurement from a conveyor belt by image analysis is the overlap phenomenon that occurs between adjacent particles. A methodology is developed and described in this paper to estimate the sieve size distribution from the overlapped projected particle images as might be obtained from a conveyor belt. Two aspects of the overlap problem have been taken into consideration. First, several image processing algorithms were studied to find the most suitable technique to separate the projected overlapped particle images for narrow sized particles. These image segmentation algorithms include two-dimensional thresholding, edge detection and Watershed discrimination techniques. The other aspect of the overlap problem is related to the determination of the general kernel function for the partial particle images obtained from the projection of the overlapped particle bed. In this regard, a computer simulation technique was applied to mimic the overlapped particle bed for narrow sized particles, then the general kernel functions of the partial particle images were determined.

Sphalerite is commonly floated in an alkaline environment and under such conditions the overall activation mechanism is obscured by the hydrolysis of Cu2+ and precipitation of Cu(OH)2. Electrokinetic and kinetic flotation tests show that the activation of sphalerite is a two-stage process; the activation products formed on the surface of sphalerite in near neutral and in alkaline solutions in the first rapid activation stage are "flotation-inactive". These layers, when formed in an alkaline solution, are unstable and are transformed into the "flotation-active" form in the second stage. However, the surface layers formed during activation in alkaline environment by copper in the presence of lead ions are very stable and even after a long conditioning time the flotation rate is not improved. Consequently, while both Cu2+ and Pb2+ activate sphalerite flotation, quite unpredictable effects may result when both are present in the solution.

This paper addresses the sharing of 2D and 3D data between GIS and mine planning software. Two-dimensional (2D) data, and now three-dimensional (3D) data as well, can be formatted such that both types of software can use, exchange, and display the same datasets. This increases the ability to share data between such groups as environmental, exploration, and mine planning. It overcomes shortcomings of mine planning software in areas of open database connectivity, spatial analysis, and data input and output. It also helps to overcome shortcomings of GIS software in the areas of geologic modeling, three-dimensional interpolation, and visualization.
